Resumen
When traditional methods integrate popular science microanimation works, the integration effect of the animation works is not good. In this paper, we propose an automatic integration algorithm of popular science microanimation works in the context of new media. The system first analyzes the characteristics of the new media context and gives the meaning of microanimation in the context of new media. It simplifies the edge folding of popular science microanimation integration and calculates the Facial Animation Parameter (FAP) value to realize the automatic integration of popular science microanimation works. We conducted a number of experiments using various size datasets to test the proposed system. We achieved an average integration accuracy of 96.3% with datasets of 500 to 3000 animation works, having the highest accuracy of 99% with a dataset of 500 animation works. On the other hand, the integration time of the animation works was recorded just 1.25 seconds with a dataset of 3000 animation works which is much lower than the existing work.

Resumen
Abstract This contribution aims to examine the scientific relationship between Giuseppe Toaldo and Jérôme Lalande, focusing on two works by the French astronomer which Toaldo translated into Italian. The first text is the Abregé d’ Astronomie (Compendio d’Astronomia, Padova: Stamperia del Seminario, 1777), addressed to students of astronomy; the second one is the Astronomie des Dames (Astronomia delle Dame, [Venezia]: Giacomo Storti, 1796), written for a female public to which Toaldo interestingly added the appendix Astronomia de’ Gentiluomini (Venezia, 1797). These works clearly testify Toaldo’s deep interest in the teaching and spreading of astronomy, an interest Toaldo shared with Lalande. The contacts between the two astronomers we will be displaying will also allow us to make some hypothesis about two splendid globes, a terrestrial and a celestial one. It is unknown how they arrived in the library of the Episcopal Seminar of Padova, where they are preserved today.

Resumen
This article is dedicated to examination of works of the film directors of the Leningrad popular science film studio “Lennauchfilm” in the 1970s – 1980s. Based on the archival documents presented in the Central Archive of Literature and Art of Saint Petersburg, the author analyzes the work of the film studio: carries out classification of filmography by formal-semantic criterion, as well as determines the key processes typical to this time period. The following main trends are highlighted: natural science, technical-propagandistic, historical-revolutionary, military-patriotic, social life, history of art and culture. Special attention is given to the films that cover the topics, which have not previously been included in the field of popular science cinematography. The novelty of this research lies in classification of the thematic trends of the Leningrad film studio as an integral artistic system, as well as in comparison of the plots of popular science film texts by each direction over the two decades. As a result, the author identified the main trends, which broadened the thematic field in the work of the studio, as well as fundamentally changed the representations on the goals and tasks of popular science cinematography. The key object of popular science cinematography is being shifted during the Perestroika period. Emphasis is place not on science and technological achievements, but human and society. Film directors through their works conveyed the attitude of society towards science, raising the questions of transformation of ethics and morality in the context of scientific and technological revolution. The idea of the harm of scientific achievements and responsibility of the scholars before society is being advanced. Without any doubt, the works of the Leningrad film directors broadened the ideological-artistic range by offering the own vision of specificity of the Soviet popular science cinematography.

Resumen
AbstractCommunicative contract analysis constructs an analytic methodology, taking musical semiotics as a theoretical basis, to look at the ways in which pieces of popular music define themselves generically, and how they make reference to other genres. By taking the different components of a sound as referential to parent genres or foreign genres, one can tease out these references in hybrid musical forms. The method is then applied to three contemporary works, The Kaiser Chiefs' Ruby, Hadouken!'s That Boy, That Girl and Bjork's Joga, and the pertinent issues raised in these works are discussed.

Resumen
The present paper is devoted to the overview of the beginnings and development of the genre of science fiction in Latvian literature. Similarly to other popular fiction genres, science fiction in Latvian literature has not been very popular due to social and historical reasons; however, during the course of the 20th century several authors have at least partially approached the genre and created either fully fledged science fiction works or literary works with science fiction elements in them. The paper looks at the first attempts to create science fiction-related works during the beginning of the 20th century; it then provides an insight into three epochs when the genre received comparatively wider attention: 1) the 1930s produced mainly adventure novels with elements of science fiction mirroring the correspondent world tendencies of that time period; 2) the period between the 1960s and 80s saw authors who had the courage to leave the strict platform of Soviet Social Realism, experimenting with a variety of science fiction elements in the postmodern literary context which allowed for a wide metaphoric interpretation. This epoch also saw the emergence of a specific phenomenon – humorous / satiric science fiction which the authors employed in order to offer social criticism of the Soviet lifestyle; 3) the beginning of the 21st century saw the emergence of several science fiction works by a new generation of writers: these works presently comprise the majority of newly published science fiction. The paper outlines the main tendencies of the newest Latvian science fiction such as authors experimenting with a variety of themes, the preference for dystopian future scenarios and humour. The paper offers brief conclusions as to the possible future of Latvian science fiction in context of the current developments in the genre.

In an increasingly mediated culture, social institutions such as science, public health, and civic engagement exist within the same modes of discourse as popular media. As a human endeavor, science is also a cultural phenomenon, and there are webs of multidirectional and layered communication that occur between formal science communication, pop science, and, indeed, popular media. For public participants, engagement with science and entertainment may be one in the same. This essay draws from research of transformative works, fan studies, and memetics to examine how the public engages with science and popular media within digital cultures.

Resumen
The article identifies and analyzes the formation of images of the past in popular music on the example of the tracks from the album “Heroes” by the band “Sabaton”. The work studies the representations of the war images in popular music in the context of the original works of the musical group “Sabaton”, interviews of musicians, reviews of fans and critics, as well as videos of the popular science YouTube channel of the group. The author develops studies of representations of the military history images in the context of culture and the arts, using popular music, which is unpopular in research, but a large-scale and ubiquitous phenomenon. Through the involvement of audiovisual sources (video clips and performances at concerts), as well as interviews and video materials of the popular science channel, the author reveals an issue of narrativization and glorification of the historical past and its participants, the creation of completely new images and plots by the Swedish group in the context of representations of the past. The involvement and analysis of the works from the popular science channel “Sabaton History” allows to identify the background for the creation of songs by the Swedish band, to find out the opinions of musicians and a professional historian responsible for maintaining the channel. The example considered in the article demonstrates how popular music works with images of the past, and how the techniques of representation may vary depending on different cultural and linguistic contexts.

By adopting the corpus-based approach, the present study compares the frequency of use, semantic distribution, and stance expression of shell nouns in the “N + that” clause in popular science discourse compared with academic writing. The results show that, firstly, the frequency of use of shell nouns in the “N + that” clause in popular science is lower than that in academic discourse. Secondly, the semantic coverage of shell nouns in popular science discourse is smaller than that in academic discourse, but its semantic proportion distribution is roughly the same, mainly including mental and linguistic shell nouns. Thirdly, in popular science discourse and academic discourse, the proportion of shell nouns with epistemic stances occupies an absolute advantage, while the proportion of shell nouns with attitudinal stances is less. The proportion of shell nouns expressing attitudinal stance in popular science discourse is greater than that in academic discourse.

The specific traits of the methodology of theology as well as the peculiarities of its scientific knowledge inevitably influence the extralinguistic and intralinguistic features of theological scientific works, which is especially reflected in the lexical layer. Tis paper deals with the analysis of the vocabulary of popular scientific theological works of eminent authors in the Serbian language in relation to academic papers as basic representatives of the scientific style of theology. The results obtained by statistical analysis of the vocabulary of the works of the two mentioned substyles enabled their contrastive analysis. In addition, atypical elements were pointed out – the expressive and emotional markers and stylistic figures of popular science theological works.

Resumen
Religious values, especially Islam, have always been attractive themes in the preparation of literary works. Since the era of oral literature, to written literature, even digital literature as is currently happening, Islamic themes have always been a magnet for readers. In fact, since the spread of the era of ecranization, the nuances of darkness have also become a magnet for audiences in cinemas. From here then comes the term Popular Islamic Literature. Popular Islamic Literature is a differentiator from Islamic Literature which is noble and tends to be absurd. This article aims to reveal 1) The characteristics of popular Islamic literature that distinguish it from other genres, 2) The motives for the emergence of Popular Islamic Literature in Indonesia. The results obtained are that Popular Islamic Literature dominates the distinctive features which include practical Islamic naming code and fashion code. Islam is different from noble Islam which tends to be absurd and transcendental. The Popular Islamic Literature genre follows market tastes that place more emphasis on instant culture and visual beauty. The genre of Popular Islamic Literature will become an established genre if its authors, such as Helvi Tiana Rosa, Habiburahman El-Syirazy, Asma Nadia, Tere Liye and so on, remain productive in producing works with the same theme that are of interest to many readers.

POPULAR SCIENCE BOOK FOR CHILDREN AND YOUNG ADULTS IN THE EYES OF CRITICS — A RESEARCH RECONNAISSANCEThe aim of the article is to determine the position of popular science books for children and young people in Polish literary criticism and book studies, and to specify the terminology used by scholars. Opinions about such books have been formulated by theorists and practitioners of children’s books since the 19th century, with the criteria of their assessment changing in accordance with the current literary fashions and trends in pedagogy. Critics’ interest in such works was strong until the end of the 19th century, when books for children were expected mainly to serve utilitarian purposes. The phenomenon intensified especially in the era of positivism; among the most enthusiastic advocates of popular science books were Adolf Dygasiński and the co-editor of Bluszcz Maria Ilnicka. The stature of popular science books is also evidenced by the fact that their titles often appeared in recommended bibliographies at the time. A later change in the perception of the tasks of literature for the youngest readers diminished the critics’ interest in such works. In addition, there was a growing rift between literary criticism and pedagogical-library criticism. In communist Poland the perception of popular science books was also affected by the promotion of works not suited to the expectations and needs of the readers. Today, the stature of popular science books rises with their market success and innovative projects in the area. That is why there are numerous reviews of such works in professional journals Guliwer, Nowe Książki, Świat Książki Dziecięcej etc. and websites Mądre książki, 10 książek: na start do nauki etc. as well as studies devoted to the history and evolution in the content and editorial form of such publications, and their usefulness in the teaching and self-education of young readers.

Sonification is described as an under-utilised dimension of the ‘wow!’ factor in science engagement multi-media. It is suggested that sonification's potential value, like much of the scientific visualisation content, probably lies less in hard facts and more in how it may serve as a stimulant for curiosity. Sound is described as a multi-dimensional phenomenon, and a number of approaches to creating sonifications are reviewed. Design strategies are described for five types of phenomena that were sonified for works created by cosmologist George Smoot III and percussionist/ethnomusicologist Mickey Hart, most particularly for their filmRhythms of the Universe(Hart and Smoot 2013).

Resumen
One of the original works of Indonesians is dangdut music, more specifically, dangdut koplo. Dangdut music continues to grow, and the coming of dangdut koplo is accompanied by the human invention of information and communication technology, namely social media. This technology has succeeded in having a positive impact on the work of the nation, namely spreading dangdut koplo to all corners of the islands and even to the corners of the world. The objective of this simple piece of writing is to highlight a popular culture that occurs in Indonesia. One of the results of human thought, especially that of the people of East Java, in terms of art, especially music, can be a type of music that is light, pleasing to the ear, favored by people of all ages, strata, and social statuses, is able to eliminate all kinds of barriers in society, and can be an alternative form of entertainment. The objective of the study is to describe a new culture which emerged from the grassroot but it attracts international attention. The method used is the observation of communication phenomena that occur in society and literature study, which are then linked into propositions that can be used as subjects for the development of the scientific repertoire of culture and communication. It can be concluded that the emergence of dangdut koplo is clear evidence that everyone can produce a work that can be enjoyed by many people and can become a new culture in society that does not discredit previous works but instead strengthens and perfects previous great works.

Resumen
The purpose of this article is a comparative analysis of evidential markers in German-language texts of scientific and popular science discourse. The novelty of the study lies in the fact that today there are no scientific works devoted to comparing the means of expressing evidentiality in these types of discourse. Evidence markers contain a link to the source of the information. The researchers note that indicating the source of information increases the degree of reliability of the reported information. One of the main characteristics of scientific and popular science discourse is intertextuality, which is expressed with the help of evidential markers that vary depending on the discourse. The material of the study was 5 texts (299 mentions of the source of information) of scientific and 28 texts (281 mentions of the source of information) of popular science discourse in German, dedicated to the problems of the Arctic. As a result of the study, it was found that statements with evidential meanings “direct evidentiality” and “citation” are more common in scientific discourse than in popular science. At the same time, full citations are less common in scientific texts than in popular science ones. The meaning “rumors” as well as fragmentary quoting are rather rare in both discourses. The lowest frequency was found by the value “inferentiality”, fixed only in the texts of popular science discourse.

As one of the most popular Social Networking Services (SNS) in China, Weibo is generating massive contents, relations and users? behavior data. Many challenges exist in how to analyze Weibo data. Most works focus on Weibo clustering and topic classification based on analyzing the text contents only. However, the traditional approaches do not work well because most messages on Weibo are very short Chinese sentences. This paper aims to propose a new approach to cluster the Weibo data by analyzing the users? reposting behavior data besides the text contents. To verify the proposed approach, a data set of users? real behaviors from the actual SNS platform is utilized. Experimental results show that the proposed method works better than previous works which depend on the text analysis only.

Every year, an increasing number of scholarly and popular works on issues relating to the relationship between the fields of religion and politics appear around the world, especially in the English-speaking world. This shows, on the one hand, the growing importance and relevance of these problems, and on the other, the great interest of researchers in such issues. These works focus primarily on the connections and processes that take place in the world of Islam, in particular at the junction of the Islamic Christianity. Based on this, we can say that in our eyes a new scientific discipline is being created, which, on the model of existing religious disciplines (philosophy of religion, psychology of religion, sociology of religion and geography of religion), can be called the political science of religion.

Resumen
Predictions and illustrations of life in the future are often integrated in works of science fiction, which could not be immediately proven yet possibly fascinating when looked back on several decades later or at the times predicted in the works. Science fiction authors foretell such events by borrowing theories, concepts, or simply terms used by scientists. Those theories, concepts, and terms can be written in scientific journals or in more popular media. American science fiction works, for instance, illustrate the future by their adaptation in the forms of more popular media such as movies, video games, and the works categorized as the subgenres of cyber literature. All of them are discussed in this paper from the lens of New Historicism, which believes in equality between literary and non-literary texts in viewing phenomena that exist in society, one of which is the relationship between science fiction works, their writers, their readers, and society. Technology is seen as a product of society, so it becomes broadly part of culture. Meanwhile, emerging technology is sometimes coincidental and random, so it can also be seen that technology determines people’s movements and lifestyles. This study contributes to ongoing discussions on the ethical and societal implications of speculative narratives by highlighting the interconnectedness between literature, science, technology, and society.

Resumen
Over the last three decades, a diverse array of historical studies on Dar es Salaam City in Tanzania, from both national and international researchers and writers, has grown considerably. Most of the published studies have focused on the social histories of the city’s denizens, urban governance, spatial distribution, cultural histories and environmental issues. Outstanding works in this group include James R. Brennan’s Taifa: Making Nation and Race in Urban Tanzania (2012); Bernard Calas’ (editor) From Dar es Salaam to Bongoland: Urban Mutations in Tanzania (2007); and Laura Sykes and Uma Waide’s Dar es Salaam: A Dozen Drives around the City (1997). These books have employed approaches ranging from those employed by ethnographers, geographers, sociologists to those used by conventional historians. Arguably, popular works of fiction which are plenty in postcolonial Dar es Salaam have found no abode in such great publications. Put differently, the previous urban historians have hardly employed literary works as sources in writing and interpreting urban histories. The outcome of neglecting such sources has been underrepresentation of the intellectual history of the city.

Resumen
This paper engages the debate within the ‘democratic turn’ in Machiavelli scholarship, where an ‘institutional’ approach has celebrated Machiavelli's theorisation of the institutions under which the people can rule while a ‘no-rule’ approach has traced Machiavelli's attention to the popular capacity to subvert all relations of rule. What do we make of Machiavelli's concurrent reception as a champion of popular rule and an antagonist to all rule? I argue that both institutionalising and subversive impulses appear simultaneously in Machiavelli's works, though in a dynamic for which neither of the democratic approaches adequately accounts – namely, a rhetorical dimension of Machiavelli's works wherein political knowledge unfolds from a continuous multiplicity of perspectives and the ensuing implication that perspective is crafted and shaped through political action. Perspectival readings of Machiavelli's accounts of the Capuan debate and the Ciompi rebellion thus reveal that both democratic approaches have neglected to question certain ‘princely’ orientations toward political action inherited in their conceptualisations of Machiavellian democracy. In contrast, I suggest that Machiavelli's comedy La Mandragola offers an opportunity to reframe perspective as a uniquely democratic phenomenon. Reading the comedy alongside the democratic turn, I argue that it enacts, satirises and even casts doubts on Machiavelli's princely lessons, in turn proposing a popular capacity to cultivate perspective in a newly organised public space.

AbstractThis article argues that the common narrative of a Bolivian backlash against neoliberalism should be reconsidered in light of the continuities and mutual constraints between popular mobilization and neoliberal policy reforms. The study draws on literature that conceptualizes neoliberalism as a particular construction of state and social forms; but unlike those works, it includes an analysis of International Monetary Fund policy shifts to understand how popular mobilization constrains policy implementation. Responding to popular mobilization between 1985 and 2006, the IMF came to accept divergence from orthodox policy in order to encourage political stability. The government of Evo Morales and the IMF are mutually constrained by concern for the investment climate. This study further advocates that analysts probe beyond simple binary divisions between “neoliberalism” and “alternatives” and look more seriously for pragmatic strategies for negotiating neoliberal spaces.

Resumen
The popular science text is described by the author in the context of competition with other media products: films, TV series, video games. Under these conditions, a popular science text acquires new communication characteristics, one of which is a play. The concept of play is viewed through the prism of Johan Huizinga’s work «Homo Ludens, a Study of the Play Element in Culture». The work highlights the main features of play. There are four such characteristics: a play brings pleasure, provides for the presence of special (play) behavior and establishes order, and is also characterized through the tension that arises in the process of playing activity. The play brings pleasure to the player, which in a popular science text is realized through the comprehension of new knowledge, as well as through the awareness of the abundance of sences and interpretations of the text, «flickering of meanings», realized with the help of metaphors. Play behavior is a «play with the addressee»: the use of professional vocabulary allows a reader to identify himself with a researcher. A special playful order is achieved through the use of special narrative schemes that makes it possible to avoid automatism in perception and help to assimilate the content of the text in the most productive way. The tension inherent to any play is interpreted as an intellectual tension associated with the comprehension of new sences, and as an emotional tension, which is achieved via the use of means of artistic expression and strengthens the reader’s emotional involvement in the events described in the text. Each statement is illustrated by examples from popular science works presented in the Russian book market. The author comes to the conclusion that modern popular science texts demonstrate a new property – a playful beginning.

This paper explores the shifting paradigm of ‘aesthetic pleasure’ in the field of popular literature with an emergence of cultural studies in Literary Theory. It focuses on the concept of pleasure as a significant measure in analyzing the origin and development of Indian popular campus fiction as a distinct genre. It examines how the concept of ‘pleasure’ has shifted from a purely aesthetic appreciation of the values of truth, beauty and goodness to the contemporary aspects of hedonistic and somatic pleasures in the works of popular arts. The paper also sheds light on various theories, propounded by different cultural critics like Theodor Adorno, Herbert Marcuse and Leo Lowenthal to analyze the ways the cultural industry has incorporated the values of enjoyment and entertainment into the aesthetic appreciation of pleasure, offering the emotional engagement of readers in these popular texts.

Resumen
The concept of “popular religion” is among the most frequent to arise in debates on religion in social science. Nevertheless, there is often disagreement on the scope of this concept and its definition, which are the result of an implicit and indiscriminate notion of religion. The author identifies three main groups of works that describe and apply different definitions of popular religion. The first, clearly identified with a Catholic matrix, considers popular religion as the religion of the “people”. The second focuses on the “functions” that popular religion fulfils among the poorest sectors of the population, as a way of dealing with deprivation. The third group suggests the existence of a “different logic” to analyse religious events. Basing herself on the main literature produced in Latin America on the subject, the author proposes a way round the problems raised by coining and discussing the concept of “practices of sacralization”.

The present Field Note details new and established detection methods and evaluates recent versions of popular DBI systems against them. It also sets out reflections on potential remediations and alternatives available to security researchers for their daily needs. The success of F. Soulier, E. Sue, A. Dumas, and other authors works, published in periodicals, contributed to the emergence of ethical and aesthetic disputes about the feuilleton novelas a genre. Following Ch. Sainte-Beuve, who spoke out against "industrial literature", French intellectual elite attacked feuilleton novels, claiming the authors for damaging artistic taste and immorality. Meanwhile, the fields of "high" and "folk" romanticism constantly intersected, and in the course of dispute about feuilleton novels, the poetics of elite prose not only influenced popular fiction, but also voluntarily or involuntarily used its experience. In the process of this repulsion / attraction, the main types of popular literature were born, namely: detective story, love story, fantastic prose, etc.

Resumen
In recent decades the discipline of American historical knowledge has been heavily influenced by the works of revisionist historians, who have dominated both science and education, as well as popular culture. New interpretations and reinterpretations of the past have become more popular than any previous efforts in the field. The contradictory nature and radical ideological content of revisionist interpretations of historical events made them highly appealing to a mass audience seeking an alternative to “boring” academic narratives, on the one hand, and on the other hand, they have caused considerable disruption for traditionalist historians, who had to evaluate and criticize not only the endeavors of their colleagues, but also those of laymen. Among the latter, representatives of cultural establishment, particularly literature and cinema, have a singular influence. In this article the author examines some examples of revisionist works of art, highlighting the main problems arising from specific readings of history, including historical inaccuracy, ideological bias, political partisanship, disregard for the sources, logical fallacies, a tendency to mythmaking, and numerous “artistic licenses”.

Resumen
AbstractFrom Darwin to the double helix, the last 150 years have seen revolutionary changes in our understanding of life in the Universe. In this time, works of science fiction have provided a valuable, and often overlooked, reflection of the assumptions and attitudes held by society to such changes. This paper will consider key works of film and fiction as a commentary on emergent features of astrobiology, including the work of Fred Hoyle, Olaf Stapledon's Last and First Men (1930) and Star Maker (1937), and Arthur C. Clarke and Stanley Kubrick's cinematic classic, 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968). These popular culture texts represent a useful and inspiring communication of science. Their critical discourse is the reducible gap between the new worlds uncovered by science and the fantastic strange worlds of the imagination. As such, they exemplify a way in which the culture and science of popular astrobiology can be fused.

Resumen
Fan fiction is the work written by fans who produce their own literature (and not only) based on popular original works. Their activity is concentrated primarily online, which allows them to connect and facilitate the exchange of opinions. The works appearing on internet forums give rise to discussions, inspire the creation of new works set in the original universes as well as the translations that accompany them. Like all fan art, the translations are done by non-professionals, often very young people. The translation of works often belonging to the fantasy genre poses specific difficulties. It requires not only perfect knowledge of the present-ed world, one described in the original version of a given work, but also considerable creativity. As in the case of any translation, the foundation seems to be both mastering the original language and understanding the possible linguistic play the creators invite the recipient to enter. This article presents the advantages of fan involvement in the translation of fanfiction works and the dangers of poor translation.

ArgumentThis paper analyzes the political dimension of Miguel Masriera's (1901–1981) science popularization program. In the 1920s, Masriera worked at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich – with Hermann Staudinger, the luminary of polymer chemistry – to later become a lecturer of theoretical and physical chemistry at the University of Barcelona. After living in exile in Paris, at the end of the Civil War he returned to Spain but never recovered his position. Instead, Masriera became an active popular science writer and adapted to the severe constraints of General Franco's military dictatorship (1939–1975). Inspired by the astronomer Arthur Eddington's world view, Masriera wrote and translated popular science books, and published articles in daily newspapers and journals. By examining Masriera's popular works, in particular his program for spreading “atomic culture” in Spain during the Cold War, this paper aims to contribute to the assessment of the role of science popularization in the domestic legitimization of that dictatorial regime and also its use as a vehicle for international recognition abroad.

This article discusses serialised novels published before 1918 in the Polish émigré press in the United States of America. These works were a popular feature of dailies and weeklies, but the periodicals’ regular financial difficulties meant that it was books published several years or indeed several decades earlier in Europe which were most often serialised. Consequently, most of the works that appeared in the periodicals failed to reflect contemporary literary trends while also overlooking subjects relevant to the everyday lives of Poles abroad. Still, the prevailing patriotic and historical themes complemented the values that many editorial boards subscribed to.

Resumen
In recent years, there has been something of an explosion of interest in those artworks and installations that directly foreground the bodily senses. Often referred to as proprioceptive (or prop.) art, the question to be addressed in this narrative historical review is how it should be defined, and why has it become so popular? A contrast is drawn with examples of sculpture and/or tactile art. The entertainment/experiential element of such works cannot be denied, especially in an era where funding in the arts sector is so often linked to footfall. At the same time, however, a number of the works appear to be about little more than entertainment/amusement. One might wonder why such “edutainment” should be placed in the art gallery rather than, say, in a museum of science or illusion. Nevertheless, in the best cases, the foregrounding, or removal, of bodily sensations that proprioceptive artworks deliver can potentially help to connect people in an increasingly digital, online, mostly audiovisual, and hence in some sense disembodied contemporary existence. These issues are discussed in the context of the works of Carsten Höller, a prolific German installation and object artist.

AbstractThis article explores the performative politics of devotional soundscapes at Coptic Christianmūlidfestivals. Echoing the state's reformist efforts in the 1990s to transform Muslim saint festivals into utilitarian spaces and their goers into “modern” Egyptian citizens, today the Coptic Church works to refashion these popular festivals from places of debauchery into morally productive spaces. Aided by affluent Cairene-based volunteers, church choirs travel from Cairo's poshest neighborhoods to these festivals to actively sing, disseminate, and teach popular religious songs (taratīl) in an effort to develop poorer Christian pilgrims into modern, pious, and more audible “citizens of heaven.” Through the analysis of one church choir'staratīlministry at themūlid, I illustrate how middle-class spiritual volunteers disrupt and, at times, reinscribe the Coptic Church's disciplinary efforts on the festival's poorer pilgrims, particularly as they look to modernize popular festivity into grounds of Christian ethical transformation.

In recent decades Internet communication has aroused great interest among specialists in the humanities, as evidenced by the fact that large number of works are performed on the material of different languages. The urgency of the research is caused by the need of linguistic and stylistic characteristics of Internet comments in German popular science blogs as one of the most popular genres of Internet communication. The research objective is to establish a genre model for constructing and describing of Internet comments in Internet communication. The object of our research is a German popular science blog. It is usually personal and multimedia in nature and can be both standalone and located on a particular blog platform, which greatly simplifies the authors of the blog, firstly, its creation and editing, and secondly, attracts the reader. Our analysis revealed the metatextual nature of Internet comments, which manifests itself depending on the source text in the form of a blog entry. Comments are a secondary speech genre, peripheral to the central genre – blogging. Analysis of the linguistic and stylistic characteristics of Internet comments allowed to establish: its syntactic features (most often the use of complex causes, additional, definite, complex, interrogative and exclamatory sentences); its lexical features (saturation with scientific terms, Latinisms, English loan words, abbreviations and acronyms).

Abstract:Artists’ books have become a popular genre for many institutions collecting art objects and unique books. The attempt to preserve the physical artists’ books often competes with the desire to extend user access to these highly tactile works. Partial digitization of artists’ books has allowed many institutions to cultivate an online presence for these collections, increasing access without compromising the physical integrity of the objects. However, creation of digital surrogates for artists’ books often sacrifices the authenticity and access to the intellectual content of the work. The challenge of digital preservation for artists’ books demonstrates the shortcomings of digital reformatting for works that may be intellectual and artistic.

The article examines stylistic features of Chinese-language fiction and scientific Internet discourse. It considers the concept of "internet discourse", as well as the concepts of "fiction discourse" and "scientific discourse", gives an explanation of certain lexical and grammatical features of the Chinese language. Their manifestation in the considered types of Internet discourse is analyzed. It is noted that the vocabulary of fiction Internet discourse tends to simplification, abbreviations, the use of idioms and catchphrases for greater concentration of information. The authors also use onomatopoeia to imitate the sounds of the surrounding reality by phonetic means of speech. It is shown on examples how, in contrast to popular science texts, the authors of fiction works use reduplication much more often, thereby creating a language more favorable for communication. It is explained why there are quite a lot of slang words in the artistic works of online discourses, which decorate and distinguish the work of the authors. This phenomenon reflects the existence of many dialects and changes in the language, the use of slang words depends on the origin of the author, as well as the emotional color that the author wants to reproduce. The use of linguistic stylistic means is highlighted on the examples of popular scientific and fiction texts. The lexical and grammatical means of expressiveness of the Chinese language of the texts published on the Internet are analyzed. It is indicated that an important feature of Internet works is the use of emoticons and various signs in the texts (smiley of tears, emoticon of shyness, etc.). The functioning of linguistic and stylistic means in the scientific and artistic type of Internet discourse is shown in the comparison. At the grammatical level, fiction and popular science texts are almost the same, there is the use of exclamation points for greater unity between the author and the reader, but in popular science texts they are more restrained and occur only when the author quotes his clients. There is a significant difference between popular science text and fiction. It is noted that the authors of the fiction discourse try to have more contact with the readers, conditionally involve them in the creation of the finale of the fiction work.

The article discusses the use of the category of ‘everyday life’ in historical works by Maria Bogucka as well as her theoretical contributions on the subject. Her pioneering role in adapting the mode of popular writing advanced by the French cycle Histoire de la vie quotidienne to Polish historiography in the 1960s established a high-quality standard on Polish scholars by combining original research into economic and social history with references to the history of material culture and mentalities. A quarter of a century after the publication of her exemplary study entitled Życie codzienne w Gdańsku: wiek XVI–XVII [Everyday Life in Gdańsk: Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries, 1967], Bogucka involved herself in contemporary debates within the international community of historians over the German Alltagsgeschichte, perceiving it as a methodological framework for innovative research and an opportunity to expand the theoretical side of cultural history. Though she would not produce another ‘history of everyday life’ – in a refreshed perspective and with more robust theoretical foundations – her studies into old Polish customs betray an inspiration with the German research current of Alltagsgeschichte, which blossomed in the early 1990s.

Adam Ferguson has usually been portrayed as an advocate of conflict, political parties, and factional strife. This article demonstrates that this is a rather unbalanced reading. A careful investigation of Ferguson's works and correspondence in context reveals a man deeply troubled by both turbulence and party politics. He consistently expressed fears of what he saw as the tumultuous populace, and the willingness of party leaders to rise on the shoulders of the mob. This could ultimately lead to military despotism, something he dreaded. While Ferguson's theory of antagonistic sociability was original, this article shows that we should not take for granted that it implied an approval of party conflict in a broad sense. Indeed, he was highly critical of opposition parties seeking to replace the government. He did tolerate a regulated form of contest between different orders in the state under a mixed constitution, but it is here argued that he is much better understood as a Christian Stoic promoting stability and order than a supporter of party struggle.
