Texto completoThis dissertation adopts an interdisciplinary approach which combines economic sociology, sociology of culture and political science in order to study the "Art et essai" label. It aims at explaining the specificity of a market in which a quality label functions as amesurement and as a still open issue. The first part "Socio-history and topography of the 'Art et essai' label reveals the competing priciples at stake in the process of qualification on the market of cinematographic exploitation, in which are intertwined cultural, educational, industrial and political considerations. Two statistic surveys, one based on data relative to the labelled movie theatres, the other based on the itinerary of movie classified as "Art et essai" in French movie theatres show clearly the heterogeneity of the "Art et essai" movie theatres and highlight local configurations of competition between movie theatres which produce extremely variegated local exploitation markets. A second part, "Local markets of 'Art et essai' movie theatre demonstrates hox the 'Art et essai' label is defined structurally on its actual existing markets. Contesting an essentialist definition of the label, our approach here aims at explaining its different meanings according the social structuration of the audiance, the history of the exploitation in each territory, and the social trajectory of the movie theatres managers. The "Art et essai" movie theatre, considered it turns as "shapr", "independant", "small", "prestige", "repertoire" or "neighbourhood" movie theatre, is less defined through the programming of an aesthetic canon than through an alternative and always locally situated offer of cultural goods

Texto completoThe study of newly released films from the ‘South’ opens up interesting new perspectives for research in cinema studies. These films not only inform us about international relations, public policy and the art house cinema market in France but have also led to some original conclusions. This thesis is based on a study of 430 long feature films released in France between 1990 and 2007 from Subsaharan Africa, the MENA region, Iran, Central Asia, Asia and Latin America. In this dissertation, we propose:- an analysis of the construction of cultural diplomacy in the context of bilateral and multilateral foreign politics. This treatment operates at the levels of French and European politics and examines the place of cinema with respect to the agencies that finance film production [Fonds Sud, HBF, ACPFILMS…] as well as the larger context of external funding for audio-visual productions in general;- an assessment of the construction of public policy concerning film, with an examination of the successive strategies for coping with professional activities and the market. Here, we examine industrial relations and cooperative decision making as well as the reflections concerning the conception of cultural activity and, above all, art house cinema as a project, movement and system then later as a specialist form of production and distribution;- a study of the trajectories of a selected group of film cultures from the south. This study turns around two issues; the purported symmetry between the market of the country where the film is made and the French market as measured by production statistics [China, Iran, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico] and the question of ‘small cinemas’ [Tunisia, Lebanon, Morocco, sub-Saharan Africa]

Texto completoThe research seeks to apply the idea of diversity to cultural markets and in particular to film markets (films screened in theatres and films on video). Starting from the largely political idea of cultural diversity, the work attempts to forge an operational economic concept of relevance to the international analysis of audiovisual markets. To counterbalance the semantic dilution associated with the words « diversity » and « culture », the framework of the research has to be clearly defined (chapter 1). The availability of the basic data and the complementary data collection prove to be crucial for the framing and for the completion of the case studies (chapter 2). Thanks to the data collected, three distinct measures of the diversity of film markets are proposed (chapter 3): the diversity of the market of screened films in six countries during three years (1998, 2001, 2004); the diversity of the film on video market in France, during two years (2003 and 2005); and finally the diversity of the film on video market in France in 2005 analysed per distribution network. The calculations aim to highlight the methodological issues raised in attempting to measure the diversity of a cultural market. They also allow one to draw some conclusions in terms of international comparisons and comparisons over time, or to characterise how the levels of diversity evolve along with the value-chain of the film markets (from the supply to the demand). In addition, in order to better understand the diversity of film markets, and in particular the diversity of the consumption of film, the work provides an analysis of the factors influencing box-office and video success for films (chapter 4)

Texto completoThis present research explores the valuing process of art cinema through two markets, created mainly by the movie theater label “Art et Essai” in France and “Movie Theater for Art films” in South Korea. It traces the economic, political and practical inventions, which enabled quality cinema, or auteur cinema, to be formed and to gradually define the very notion of quality. Inspired by pragmatic ideas, this study addresses the collective experience of the audience that leads to the distinction between “going to the cinema” and “seeing a movie”. This comparative historical research of two different countries which have strong traditions of “quality” cinema reveals the importance of the relationship between the socio- economic construction of quality and the various dimensions invented by movie industry participants, who are interested not only in screening films, but also and notably in attracting spectators and creating their audiences.Despite the similarity of some general figures of their industry such as national films’ market share and cinema admissions per capita, they differ in three ways: the beginning and the development process of the quality film market; government subsidies for art houses by means of quality labels and their impact on the identity formation of quality films in the market; and finally the landscape of art houses today. Analyses of each country presented in turn, because of their great difference, are however following the same path: starting from the presentation of enlightening early stage of the film industry and of the first government intervention against the American invasion; entering into details about art film market creation, subsidy policy changes and implementation of different modes of distribution in movie theater market; and concluding with the present situation

Texto completoCreated long before they were discovered, the populations of the outermost Africa were mixed by travellers, scientists and novelists at the rise of the seventeenth century, under the names of "Gens du Cap", "Sauvages du Cap", "Cafres" and "Hottentots". These populations puzzle the European imaginary since the end of the medieval time. From the sixteenth to the eighteenth century, they are the subject of different represen-tations in writings such as travel stories, scholarly books, collections of stories, novels, tragedies and comedies To analyse the forms and the stakes of these representations, to bring to the fore the circonstances in which they emerge, to study the way they are conveyed, to report the aesthetic, philosophical, historical and theological debates they imply ; here are some of the stakes of this essay in which in an anthropopoiétic angle the autor sets out to bring to light the making of otherness, of the people from the outer-most Africa in literary and scientific French cultures from the sixteenth to the eigh-teenth century, or from the beginnings of Humanism to the final lights of the trium-phant Enlightenment

Texto completoDrug sales data analysis is a tool that has been developed in the early 2000s for infectious diseases surveillance and outbreak detection. These data present indeed many advantages for disease surveillance: the large volume and the completeness of the data, the rapidity to obtain the data automatically collected from pharmacies. The objective of this thesis was to determine the value of drug sales analysis for infectious disease surveillance in France. Sales data analyzed in this thesis were collected from a sample of 3,004 pharmacies in Metropolitan France, set up by the company Celtipharm. Three research axes have been developed in this thesis: We first did a systematic literature review on the surveillance of infectious diseases based on drug sales data. Twenty-seven articles have been analyzed and results showed that drug sales data analysis is a valid tool for the surveillance and outbreak detection of gastroenteritis and influenza. Besides, over-the-counter (OTC) drugs have the potential to detect outbreaks earlier than traditional surveillance data. Further studies could be developed for other infectious diseases. The second study focused on the detection of seasonal gastrointestinal disease outbreak in France based on drug sales data. Drug sales data have been compared to the number of cases reported by a network of GPs between 2008 and 2013. The Serfling method was used to detect epidemic periods in the times series. The five seasonal epidemic periods have been detected based on drug sales data, without false alert. Moreover, non-prescribed drugs allowed the detection of outbreaks on average 2.25 weeks earlier than reference data. The third study focused on the estimation of vaccination coverage (VC) against influenza and rotavirus using vaccine sales in pharmacies. We estimated the influenza vaccination coverage in the whole population and developed a method to estimate the VC in real time in the target population of the ≥ 65 years old. There is no estimation of rotavirus vaccination coverage in France as the vaccine is not reimbursed and we were able to estimate vaccination coverage since 2008 based on vaccine sales. The studies developed in this thesis showed that drug sales data analysis is a valid and useful tool for infectious disease surveillance. The main interests of this method are the rapidity to obtain the data that allows early outbreak detection and the collection of non-prescribed drugs that can reflect mild diseases or the first symptoms of a disease

Texto completoIn France, the streamlining of means assigned hospitals result in concentration of resources ana growing complexily of heallhcare facilities. Piloting and planning (them turn out to be all the more difficult, thus leading of optimjzation problems. The use of massive data produced by these systems in association with network science an alternative approach for analyzing and improving decision-making support jn healthcare. Method : Various preexisting optimisation are first highblighted based on observations in operating theaters chosen as experirnentai sites. An analysis of merger of two hospitlas also follows as an example of an optimization method by massification. These two steps make it possible to defend an alternative approach that combines the use of big data science of networks data visualization techniques. Two sets of patient data in orthopedic surgery in the ex-Midi-Pyrénées region in France are used to create a network of all sequences of care. The whole is displayed in a visual environment developed in JavaScript allowing a dynamic mining of the graph. Results: Visualizing healthcare sequences in the form of nodes and links graphs has been sel out. The graphs provide an additional perception of' the redundancies of he healthcare pathways. The dynamic character of the graphs also allows their direct rnining. The initial visual approach is supplernented by a series of objcctive measures from the science of networks. Conciusion: Healthcare facilities produce massive data valuable for their analysis and optimization. Data visualizalion together with a framework such as network science gives prelimiaary encouraging indicators uncovering redondant healthcare pathway patterns. Furthev experimentations with various and larger sets of data is required to validate and strengthen these observations and methods
