Resumen
Language shift and language maintenance as contact phenomena have received considerable attention in the realm of linguistics. The current study investigated the status of Rungus language, language of Rungus ethnic group in east Malaysia, to find out the status of this language within the Rungus local community. Synchronous unstructured interviews were conducted with twenty five Rungus educated speakers (15 males, 10 females) to elicit their attitudes about their Rungus mother tongue. Thematic analysis showed that the low status of the heritage language vis-à-vis Malay and English is evidently shown in the participants’ responses. This low status is due to various reasons such as parents’ lack of literacy, language policy, and absence of the language in the Malaysian educational system. Results of this research could argue that Rungus language is endangered and it is recommended that Rungus minority should try to maintain their language by any means otherwise it will be subject to death.

Resumen
Magahau is the main festival of the Momogun Rungus ethnic group in Sabah and is celebrated every year or every few years. This festival began to be celebrated on a large scale in 2009 as an extension of the Matunggong Customary Law Convention (2009), organised by the Matunggong Subdistrict Native Court which stipulates that the festival be held every year or every few years. The convention attended by practitioners of Rungus Customary Law from all over Kudat District, Matunggong Sub-District, Kota Marudu District and Pitas District which are districts with large Rungus population who aware that in the past, Magahau was usually celebrated by several villages or at least one village or several families. This made the delegates to decide that Magahau is a festival that is considered significance by the Momogun Rungus ethnic group. As a main festival, Magahau is also considered as a festival that highlights political and administrative elements that are not appreciated by various parties. Accordingly, based on the use of qualitative methods for the collection of related information, this paper highlights the political and administrative elements in the Magahau festival held annually by the Momogun Rungus ethnic group in Sabah.

Resumen
The Rungus are one of the indigenous Dusunic ethnic groups of Sabah, most of whom reside in the administrative Districts of Kudat and Pitas. In Rungus culture, many different genres of intangible cultural heritage have been passed down orally over generations. These heritages are valuable resources for teaching cultural awareness and appreciation among children of different ethnicities in Malaysia. They have yet to be introduced in the national music education curriculum. The purpose of this research was to document, transcribe, analyse, and thereafter to select the appropriate longoi tanganak (children’s songs) and longoi pogondoi (lullabies) that are suitable to be introduced into the Malaysia primary school music curriculum based on the recommendations of the culture bearers. This research employed ethnographic field techniques including participant observations, in-depth and focus group interviews, as well as audio and video recording. This article taps on the suggestions of culture bearers in developing suitable song repertoires that serve as school music teachers’ resources. Findings show that culture bearers recommended counting songs performed in recited heighten speech, songs arranged in the do- re- mi- so and do- mi- so tone sets, and rhythmic motifs based on the and patterns as beginner repertoire for learning Rungus songs.

Resumen
The Kadazan Dusun sundatang from Tambunan, the Rungus sundatang, and the Lotud gagayan are three kinds of boat lutes from Sabah. Each is carved from a single log of jackfruit wood, but vary structurally. Resembling somewhat Philippine boat lutes, they differ from the sape-types of Sarawak and Kalimantan. They are played solo in non-ritual contexts. The gagayan, however, was played in pairs (batangkung) and the Tambunan sundatang was sometimes accompanied by a hand-held gong when accompanying the slow, sedate magarang sundatang dance. Today, there are very few musicians playing the unique Tambunan sundatang, while the Lotud gagayan has recently declined with the demise of older performers. The Rungus sundatang is still extant and continues to be performed in many longhouses. This paper discusses these three types of Dusunic boat lutes, their structures, performance practices and music, and suggests a possible origin for these kinds of instruments found in northern Borneo.

Resumen
This paper focuses on the development of an interactive story book based on a Rungus children’s folk song (longoi tanganak). The book was developed to encourage children to express their ideas through storytelling, music and movement. This study aims to explore how an interactive book can be used in the music classroom and outlines ways in which music and movement can be integrated while reading a story. Field trips were conducted in Kudat and Pitas, Sabah to collect longoi tanganak from elderly Rungus singers recommended by village heads. Following that, a Sabah-based story was written and a song containing musical characteristics suitable for children’s singing activities were incorporated into the story. Finally, a survey was sent to 12 selected music teachers to answer the following questions: (1) What age group could use this storybook? (2) What genres of children’s literature do you use in your lessons? (3) How would you use this storybook in your music classroom? and (4) Why do you use children’s literature in your music lessons? In addition to that, two music teachers were selected from the pool of respondents and were video recorded teaching a music lesson that incorporated this story book. The results of this study revealed that children were highly engaged in the lesson, responding and actively participating in the reading of the story. This included vocal, movement and instrument exploration. Young children also learned extra skills in sign language and memorising words through the composed song, adapted from a Rungus longoi tanganak (children’s song). This product is an innovation that is suitable to be used as a teaching aid among preschool, kindergarten, and primary school children.

Resumen
Native Language learning is a complex and remarkable achievement because the process generally emerges from unique interactions that distributed across social networks and is embodied in individuals. Accordingly, scholars portray the need of a specific approach in native language learning. Among the native learning approach identified is the ‘experiential learning’, an approach based on the idea of learning from experience as the path to lifelong learning and development. Scholars who is a fan of the learning approach argues that providing the learners an opportunity to learn through experience thus become immensely valuable. Some even specifically suggest that musical instruments can be used as a promising experience based instructional instrument in language learning. But how exactly the musical instruments affect native language learning process? Through the application of a mixed-method approach, this paper examines the relationship between musical instruments and the native language learning via the lens of Rungus in Sabah, Malaysia. It shows that the musical instruments affect the native language learning among Rungus in Sabah, Malaysia. What this now hinted is that the musical instruments are an important part of a successful native language learning process, thus made it clear the need among instructors to consider musical instruments as part of their teaching activities.

Resumen
This thesis is about the images and dilemmas of Rungus tourism. The Rungus community of Kudat, Sabah, Malaysia has found its way into the country's development plans and tourism policies. Rungus' faces and special features associated with Rungus lifestyle and livelihood appeared in travel guidebooks, printed brochures and websites of Malaysian-based tour companies. What happens when the 'most traditional ethnic group' in Sabah who lived in an area "rarely visited by tourists" - the Kudat district - becomes part of the media promotion and the tourist gaze? For the Rungus community, the objective of participation in the tourism sector is to improve their economic livelihood and standard of living. The tour operators who include the Rungus as part of their tour itinerary are interested in the profit making potential of selling the Rungus as an isolated, unique and traditional community. The tourists, as consumers of the Rungus product, come to Rungus territory to seek the authentic tourist experience - the feeling of being whole and balanced through revisiting the past in the Rungus present. The research focused on the two main aspects. The first aspect concerned the Rungus product. What was the product offered to the tourist and in what form? The second aspect concerned the Rungus dilemma, which basically involved two central issues: the problem of authenticity and the development paradox. Data from the ethnographic fieldwork carried out in four tourist-designated villages showed that the Rungus villagers' hopes of tourism did not materialise. They could not depend on tourism for the desired additional case income, as tourists arrivals were unpredictable and not regular. Instead, the villagers showed discontentment over the features the tourism authorities chose to represent the Rungus people. In terms of the development dilemma, the Rungus people were caught in a catch-22 situation: the success of Rungus tourism depended on the Rungus people's purportedly primitive existence. The Rungus wanted development and progress but the tourists wanted them to be undeveloped and traditional. The question is essentially one of presentation: what is the alternative to the present form of presentation of Rungus tourism?

Nilsson, Martin. "Estimation of Radial Runout". Thesis, Linköping University, Department of Electrical Engineering, 2007. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-8744.

Texto completo
Resumen

The demands for ride comfort quality in today's long haulage trucks are constantly growing. A part of the ride comfort problems are represented by internal vibrations caused by rotating mechanical parts. This thesis work focus on the vibrations generated from radial runout on the wheels. These long haulage trucks travel long distances on smooth highways, with a constant speed of 90 km/h resulting in a 7 Hz oscillation. This frequency creates vibrations in the cab, which can be found annoying. To help out with the vibration diagnosis when a truck enters a mechanical workshop, this work studies methods for radial runout detection using the wheel speed sensors.

The main idea is to represent the varying radius signal with a sinusoid, where the calculations are based on Fourier series. The estimated radial runout value is then the amplitude of the sinusoid. In addition to the detection part, the work also present results regarding how the relative phase difference between two wheels with radial runout effects the lateral motion of the cab.

This thesis work was performed at Scania CV AB in Södertälje, Sweden and all measurements have been full scale experiments on real trucks.

Resumen
Various real processes, occurring in the nature, technology, etc., are usually described by differential equations. Due to the development of computer software, computers have become the main tool for solving problems of different fields. They enable not only to solve complex differential equations or their systems, but also to analyze the dependence of differential equations solutions on various parameters and initial values. Up to the present many methods for the solution of differential equations have been developed, therefore, the user can solve differential equation, using several different methods. Different methods of solution enable to avoid various mistakes and to reduce errors. Differential equations can be solved not only using numerical methods, but also by applying methods of algebraic operator equations. When the latter method is being used, solutions are expressed in power series, the convergence of which has to be analyzed separately. This paper includes the analysis of Mathieu-type differential equations solutions dependence on initial conditions and parameters, as well as the establishment of solutions attractor zones and curves, which separate different attractor zones. It is very important to indicate the most exact crossing limits among different attractor zones. In order to avoid huge errors, we carried out the research by using two methods: operator and Runge-Kutta.

Warzynski, Andrzej. "Runge-Kutta residual distribution schemes". Thesis, University of Leeds, 2013. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/5271/.

Texto completo
Resumen
The residual distribution framework and its ability to carry out genuinely multidimensional upwinding has attracted a lot of research interest in the past three decades. Although not as robust as other widely used approximate methods for solving hyperbolic partial differential equations, when residual distribution schemes do provide a plausible solution it is usually more accurate than in the case of other approaches. Extending these methods to time-dependent problems remains one of the main challenges in the field. In particular, constructing such a solution so that the resulting discretisation exhibits all the desired properties available in the steady state setting. It is generally agreed that there is not yet an ideal generalisation of second order accurate and positive compact residual distribution schemes designed within the steady residual distribution framework to time-dependent problems. Various approaches exist, none of which is considered optimal nor completely satisfactory. In this thesis two possible extensions are constructed, analysed and verified numerically: continuous-in-space and discontinuous-in-space Runge-Kutta Residual Distribution methods. In both cases a Runge-Kutta-type time-stepping method is used to integrate the underlying PDEs in time. These are then combined with, respectively, a continuous- and discontinuous-in-space residual distribution type spatial approximation. In this work a number of second order accurate linear continuous-in-space Runge- Kutta residual distribution methods are constructed, tested experimentally and compared with existing approaches. Additionally, one non-linear second order accurate scheme is presented and verified. This scheme is shown to perform better in the close vicinity of discontinuities (in terms of producing spurious oscillations) when compared to linear second order schemes. The experiments are carried out on a set of structured and unstructured triangular meshes for both scalar linear and nonlinear equations, and for the Euler equations of fluid dynamics as an example of systems of non-linear equations. In the case of the discontinuous-in-space Runge-Kutta residual distribution framework, the thorough analysis presented here highlights a number of shortcomings of this approach and shows that it is not as attractive as initially anticipated. Nevertheless, a rigorous overview of this approach is given. Extensive numerical results on both structured and unstructured triangular meshes confirm the analytical results. Only results for scalar (both linear and non-linear) equations are presented.

Whittall, John Russell. "Runout exceedance prediction for open pit slope failures". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/54547.

Texto completo
Resumen
Consequences from recent large open pit slope failures have increased industry and regulatory interest in establishing exclusion zones beneath an impending slope failure. Damaged infrastructure, equipment, and fatalities have resulted despite geotechnical staff effectively identifying the hazard and predicting the timing of the failure. Creating exclusion zones is a common response to reduce risk, however uncertainty remains as to how far they should extend. Advances in natural landslide research have created useful tools for landslide risk management. These tools have clear applications to pit slopes but most have not been tested or validated. This thesis validates empirical runout tools to a dataset of 105 pit slope failures and provides design charts to explicitly account for runout and runout exceedance in emergency response procedures. Results from the analysis presented demonstrate that Fahrböschung angle vs. volume, Fahrböschung angle vs. slope angle, and inundation area vs. volume relationships follow the general trend of established natural landslide models with similar scatter. However differences in liquefiable substrate, topographic confinement, and a clear dependence on material properties and slope angle necessitate a tool calibrated to open pits. Open pit specific linear regressions are provided and a new mobility index is proposed to accommodate the geometric and material constraints affecting mobility. A design tool is provided to map the inundation area back from the estimated deposit toe. These tools are best applied in a probabilistic framework to scale runout to the mine’s tolerable risk level. Runout exceedance probability charts and simple equations are provided to estimate exclusion zones and integrate runout into the mine’s risk management plan.

Resumen
<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">During validation of a new brake lining on a light duty truck application, the brake rotor exhibited high lateral runout on the friction surfaces. As the engineering team investigated the issue more carefully, they noticed the rotor lateral runout was also changing from revolution to revolution. The team ran testing on multiple light pickup vehicles and found differences in the amount of rotor runout variation. The rotor lateral runout and runout variation can cause vibration and pulsation of the passenger seat and the steering wheel. To identify the root cause of the high level of rotor lateral runout and runout variation, measurement data was collected and analyzed from the vehicle level test. During further analysis, some of the runout variation corresponded to a wheel bearing internal frequency. The bearing internal geometry was studied to confirm what factors affected the runout variation. The team also conducted testing to see how the mating components may have affected the wheel bearing. In addition to the vehicle testing, fixtures were built to perform brake corner bench testing. This testing showed that both the total runout and runout variation increased as more mating components were added. Brake corners from two different vehicles were bench tested. The major difference between the vehicles was the mounting location of the splash shield. On one vehicle the splash shield is mounted (sandwiched) between the knuckle and the bearing’s outer ring flange and on the other vehicle, the splash shield is directly mounted with screws to the knuckle (not sandwiched). Splash shield distortion due to compression near the knuckle bolts and the bearing outer ring contact surface, caused the larger total runout value and the higher variation. The study also proved that continuous assembly/disassembly will increase the distortion on the mating parts, which leads to the greater total runout and variation values.</div></div>

Resumen
Timeseries observations of beach elevation change and wave runup from a tower-mounted stationary lidar assess the skill of 2% runup exceedance (𝑅𝑅2%) estimates during four storm events at Duck, NC. The runup parameterization requires the foreshore beach slope, which generally unknown during high energy events. Pre-storm estimates are often used as a proxy. 𝑅𝑅2% hindcasts use the observed time-varying beach slope and a static pre-storm beach profile, yielding an 𝑅𝑅2% skill of 0.57. The skill drops to −1.0 using seasonal mean beach slopes and reduces after the peak of two storms with the appearance of beach cusps in the swash zone morphology. One storm’s runup is underpredicted by up to 1.0 m at high tides following the storm peak when cusps are present Additional pre- and post-storm mobile lidar surveys for one storm confirm ubiquitous small-scale beach cusps along 8 km of the local shoreline. The results suggest skillful runup estimates are often attainable given the availability of beach information before a storm. The parameterization errors increase when beach cusps develop, highlighting the need to extend standard one-dimensional runup parameterizations to account for two-dimensional effects.
