Texto completoThe aim of this PhD thesis is to study the dynamic spreading of rumors. This investigation takes into account the social interaction processes performed by agents on four different network topologies and analyzing the emerging results related to diffusion of the rumor, the balance of credibility and collective action. To do so, we conducted two complementary methodological strategies. The first one was to make a quantitative empirical approach that allowed us to identify key individual mechanisms related to diffusion, credibility and action based on rumor, that is, to understand individual action. The second one was to implement an agent-based model (empirically calibrated with the results of our initial approach) to dynamically analyze the diffusion processes. From an individual perspective, our data showed that interest, anxiety and rumor credibility were related to the action of spreading the rumor. The issuer's belief, trust and the level of fit between the receiver's prior beliefs and content of the rumor were associated with the belief of the receiver. Finally, the action based on the content of the rumor was determined by the interest in the rumor and credibility. At the macro social level, we identified the emergence of various composition effects related to credibility and diffusion processes. For example, “the static effect of credibility”, “starter effect”, “asymmetric determination”, “Festinger effect”, etc.. The discovery of these effects is proof that (1) dynamic studies yield different results than cross-sectional studies; (2) the omission of the network structure diffusion which develops over time produces poor results in the evaluation of the aggregated results and (3) the simulation social research methodology is an exceptional tool to address this type of study.

Texto completoDaley-Kendall and Maki-Thompson models are the two most cited stochastic models for the spread of rumours phenomena, in scientific literature. In both, a closed homogeneously mixing population is subdivided into three classes of individuals called ignorants, spreaders and stiflers. After a rumor is introduced in the population, it spreads by following certain rules that depend on the class to which the individual who knows the rumor belongs. Both the final proportion of the population never hearing the rumor and the time it takes are variables of interest for the proposed models. The main tools used to study stochastic rumours have been the principle of the diffusion of arbitrary constants, martingale arguments, generating functions and the study of analogue deterministic versions. Relying on the theory of density dependent Markov chains, we present an alternative to these tools. This approach allows us to establish asymptotical results for a general model that has as particular cases the classical Daley-Kendall and Maki-Thompson models, and other variations for rumour models reported in the literature recently.

Abstract: The present research analyses the concept of divided subject, memory and language in La prisonnière (1923), a posthumous novel by Marcel Proust (the fifth volume of the À larecherche du temps perdu series). The study is carried out in the light of the theory ofmemory and language by Sigmund Freud in one of his earliest papers On Aphasia (Zur Auffassung des Aphasien (1891)). In our study, fiction and theory appear side by side. The argument derived from the present investigation is that La prisonnière opposes Proust¿s aesthetic doctrine explicit in the last volume of Recherche thus raising a new issue regarding the knowledge of the subject. Shifting from the optical metaphor to the speculation of sonority, La prisonnière is concerned with language perception: of noises, songs, voice, and finally music, forming a language theory in fiction. Freud¿s study on aphasia provides a model for the initial apprehension of the subject-language-world relationship, in which, parting from the language flaws, the concepts of memory, representation and object are also relocated.

Texto completoOn-line Social networks become a new and important medium of exchange of information, ideas and communication that approximate relatives and friends no matter the distances. Given the open nature of the Internet, the information can flow very easy and fast in the population. The network can be represented as a graph, where individuals or organizations are the set of vertices and the relationship or connection among the vertices are the set of edge. Moreover, the social networks are also intrinsically representing the structure of a more complex system that is the society. These structures are related with characteristics of the subjects, like the most popular individuals have many connections, the correlation in the connectivity of vertices that is a trace of homophily phenomenon, among many others. In particular, it is well accepted that the structure of the network can affect the way the information propagates on the social networks. However, how the structure impacts in the propagation, how to measure that impact and what are the strategies for controlling the propagation of some information, it is still unclear. In this thesis, we seek to contribute in the analysis of the interplay between the dynamics of information and rumor spreading and the structure of the networks. We propose a more realistic propagation model considering the heterogeneity of the individuals in the transmission of ideas or information. We confirm the presence of influential spreaders in the rumor propagation process and found that selecting a very small fraction of influential spreaders, it is possible to expressively improve or reduce de diffusion of some information on the network. In the case we want to select a set of initial spreaders that maximize the information diffusion on the network, the simple and best alternative is to select the most central or important individuals from the networks communities. But, if the pattern of connection of the networks is negatively correlated, the best alternative is to choose from the most central individuals in the whole network. On the other hand, we identify, by topological approach and machine learning techniques, the least influential spreaders and show that they act as a firewall in the propagation process. We propose an adaptative method that rewires one edge for a given vertex to a central individual, without affecting the overall distribution of connection. Applying our proposed method in a little fraction of least influential spreaders, we observed an important increasing in the capacity of propagation of these vertices and in the overall network. Our results are from a wide range of simulations in artificial and real-world data sets and the comparison with the classical rumor propagation model. The propagation of information is of greatest relevance for publicity and marketing area, education, political or health campaigns, among others. The results of this these might be applicable and extended in different research fields like biological networks and animal social behavior models.
