Texto completoTheme and variation, a formal technique that is popular mainly through its applications within music, in particular thanks to contributions by artists such as Bach, Beethoven or Schönberg, nevertheless has expressive potentials that go beyond the boundaries of this art. In particular, it is in the novel that the use of variation as a composing principle, implying the presentation of a single central theme or motif by different perspectives (that may correspond to the point of view of different characters, or to different amounts of time elapsed from the actual happening of an event to its narration), seems to lend itself as the ideal device to achieve the main cognitive objective of this art, that is the unveiling of the substantial relativity of all things. While novelists such has Milan Kundera or Danilo Kiš seem to have developed, in their work, the theme and variation technique as a principle that is functional to an organic and uniform form of composition, ideally focused on a single theme, in other novels, such as If on a winter's night a traveler (1979) by Italo Calvino or Variations Goldberg (1981) by Nancy Huston, the variations are disposed so as to acquire a serial connotation. In those latter cases, the theme and variation technique is used as a functional principle for the disaggregation of the matter of the novel, rather than as a composition technique

Texto completoThe aim of this research is the analysis of the forms of representation of trauma in 20th century novel, in particular in the work of Samuel Beckett, Georges Perec and Agota Kristof. The core of the analysis is the examination of the linguistic and narrative processes of representation of trauma in the proses of the aforementioned authors, in order to define aesthetical categories able to describe the particular features of narratives whose leading aesthetic principle is the anti-narrative dimension of the traumatic memory. The analysis will dwell on the crucial relationship – vital in all three authors – between representation of trauma and development of narrative strategies that can be defined as ‘denegative’. The theoretical bases for the analysis of the literary texts are the anti-narrative theories of the traumatic memory, along with Ricœur’s hermeneutics of narrative and the Psychoanalytical theory of language. Where possible, this is paralleled by a philological and genetic study of authorial manuscripts. In contrast with the prevailing view that, in 20th century novel, sees the triumph of anti-mimesis and the decline of the story, I seek to reassess the representative and testimonial character of 20th century literature. Since traumatic narratives are built by and hinge on gaps of language, my contention is that these gaps of language (amnesia, achrony, aphasia, Freudian slips, omissions and more articulated losses, as in Perec’s case) do in fact represent, mimetically, the apparently inaccessible reality of trauma. These new canons of representation do not state the impossibility of narrative; on the contrary they represent a challenge to silence, an attempt hidden in sharper and more complicated narrative conventions that keep a relationship of indirect origin with the conventions of the traditional novel – in a way that one could call ‘denegative’.

Texto completoLove waiting is a time of patience and solitude, silence and slowness: it may seem like an obsolete and archaic sentiment, deprived of all meaning in the age of globalization, shortening of distance and rapidity of communications. Its representations in the 20th century novel, instead, show how the love waiting proves to be an interesting paradigm to understand the contradictions of contemporary humanity through the literature. This comparative research aims to define a sort of “model” of representations of the love waiting in the 20th century novel by the comparison between three important novels of the last century: Marcel Proust’s A la Recherche du temps perdu (1913-1927), Thomas Mann’s Joseph und seine Brüder (1933-1943) and Gabriel García Márquez’s El amor en los tiempos del cólera (1985). Drowing inspiration from Roland Barthes’ ideas about love waiting (Fragments d’un discours amoureux, 1977 and Le discours amoureux, 2007) and also widening the comparison to other narrative texts and pieces of the last century, this work aims to analyse the relation between the suspended and impalpable time of waiting on one side and the complex form of novel on the other side, as it occurs over the 20th century
