Resumen
In manufacturing business, variability in customer demand over time-periods has led to production flexibility on the shop floor area. Placement of machines in a limited manufacturing area is one of the essential plant designs in material flow between machines. Shortened material handling distance can be considered a key performance index of internal logistic activity in a manufacturing firm. This paper presents the application of the Genetic Algorithm for designing machine layouts that minimise total material handling cost based on demand uncertainty during time-periods. The experimental study was computationally conducted based on two scenarios: re-layout after demand changing; and robust layout (no machine movement even if demand changes). A trade-off between the shortened handling distance and total cost was discussed as being a business decision-making tool.

Resumen
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to develop a mathematical model for the design of robust layout for unequal area-dynamic facility layout problem with flexible bay structure (UA-DFLP with FBS) and test the suitability of generated robust layout in a dynamic environment. Design/methodology/approach This research adopts formulation of a mathematical model for generating a single layout for unequal area facility layout problems with flexible bay structure under dynamic environment. The formulated model for the robust layout formation is solved by developing a simulated annealing algorithm. The proposed robust approach model for UA-DFLP with FBS is validated by conducting numerical experiments on standard UA-DFLPs reported in the literature. The suitability of the generated robust layout in a dynamic environment is tested with total penalty cost criteria. Findings The proposed model has given a better solution for some UA-DFLPs with FBS in comparison with the adaptive approach’s solution reported in the literature. The total penalty cost is within the specified limit given in the literature, for most of the layouts generated for UA-DFLPs with FBS. In the proposed model, there is no rearrangement of facilities in various periods of planning horizon and thus no disruptions in operations. Research limitations/implications The present work has limitations that when the area and aspect ratio of the facilities are required to change from one period to another, then it is not possible to make application of the robust approach-based formulation to the dynamic environment facility layout problems. Practical implications Rearrangement of facilities in adaptive approach disrupts the operations whereas in the proposed approach no disruption of production. The FBS approach is more suitable for layout planning where proper aisle structure is required. The solution of the proposed approach helps to create a proper aisle structure in the detailed layout plan. Thus, easy interaction of the material handling equipment, men and materials is possible. Originality/value This paper proposes a mathematical formulation for the design of robust layout for UA-FLPs with FBS in a dynamic environment and an efficient simulated annealing algorithm as its solution procedure. The proposed robust approach generates a single layout for the entire planning horizon. This approach is more useful for facilities which are difficult/sensitive to relocate in various periods of the planning horizon.

Resumen
This paper presents a hierarchical floorplanning approach for macrocell layouts which is based on the bottom-up clustering, shape function computation, and top-down floorplan optimization with integrated global routing and pin assignment. This approach provides means for specifying and techniques for satisfying a wide range of constraints (physical, topological, timing) and is, therefore, able to generate floorplans for a number of different layout styles. A systematic and efficient optimization procedure during the selection of suitable floorplan patterns that integrates floorplanning, global routing and pin assignment, a new pin assignment technique based on linear assignment and driven by the global routing solution and floorplan topology, and an effective timing-driven floorplanning scheme are among the other novel features of the floorplanner. These techniques have been incorporated in BEAR-FP, a macrocell layout system developed at the University of California, Berkeley. Results on various placement and floorplanning benchmarks are quite good.

Resumen
During the past few decades, developing efficient methods to solve dynamic facility layout problems has been focused on significantly by practitioners and researchers. More specifically meta-heuristic algorithms, especially genetic algorithm, have been proven to be increasingly helpful to generate sub-optimal solutions for large-scale dynamic facility layout problems. Nevertheless, the uncertainty of the manufacturing factors in addition to the scale of the layout problem calls for a mixed genetic algorithm–robust approach that could provide a single unlimited layout design. The present research aims to devise a customized permutation-based robust genetic algorithm in dynamic manufacturing environments that is expected to be generating a unique robust layout for all the manufacturing periods. The numerical outcomes of the proposed robust genetic algorithm indicate significant cost improvements compared to the conventional genetic algorithm methods and a selective number of other heuristic and meta-heuristic techniques.

Resumen
This paper deals with stochastic dynamic facility layout problem under demand uncertainty in terms of material flow between facilities. A robust approach suggests a robust layout in each period as the most frequent one falling within a prespecified percentage of the optimal solution for multiple scenarios. Mont Carlo simulation method is used to randomly generate different scenarios. A mathematical model is established to describe the dynamic facility layout problem with the consideration of transport device assignment. As a solution procedure for the proposed model, an improved adaptive genetic algorithm with population initialization strategy is developed to reduce the search space and improve the solving efficiency. Different sized instances are compared with Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm to verify the effectiveness of the proposed genetic algorithm. The experiments calculating the cost deviation ratio under different fluctuation level show the good performance of the robust layout compared to the expected layout.

Resumen
Layout generation plays a crucial role in graphic design intelligence. One important characteristic of the graphic layouts is that they usually follow certain design principles. For example, the principle of repetition emphasizes the reuse of similar visual elements throughout the design. To generate a layout, previous works mainly attempt at predicting the absolute value of bounding box for each element, where such target representation has hidden the information of higher-order design operations like repetition (e.g. copy the size of the previously generated element). In this paper, we introduce a novel action schema to encode these operations for better modeling the generation process. Instead of predicting the bounding box values, our approach autoregressively outputs the intermediate action sequence, which can then be deterministically converted to the final layout. We achieve state-of-the-art performances on three datasets. Both automatic and human evaluations show that our approach generates high-quality and diverse layouts. Furthermore, we revisit the commonly used evaluation metric FID adapted in this task, and observe that previous works use different settings to train the feature extractor for obtaining real/generated data distribution, which leads to inconsistent conclusions. We conduct an in-depth analysis on this metric and settle for a more robust and reliable evaluation setting. Code is available at this website.

Resumen
The double row layout problem is to arrange a number of machines on both sides of a straight aisle so as to minimize the total material handling cost. Aiming at the random distribution of product demands, we study a stochastic robust double row layout problem (SR-DRLP). A mixed integer programming (MIP) model is established for SR-DRLP. A surrogate model is used to linearize the nonlinear term in the MIP to achieve a mixed integer linear programming model, which can be readily solved by an exact method to yield high-quality solutions (layouts) for small-scale SR-DRLPs. Furthermore, we propose a hybrid approach combining a local search and an exact approach (LS-EA) to solve large-scale SR-DRLPs. Firstly, a local search is designed to optimize the machine sequences on two rows and the clearance from the most left machine on row 1 to the left boundary. Then, the exact location of each machine is further optimized by an exact approach. The LS-EA is applied to six problem instances ranging from 8 to 50 machines. Experimental results show that the surrogate model is effective and LS-EA outperforms the comparison approaches.

Resumen
Machine learning, neural networks, and metaheuristic algorithms are relatively new subjects, closely related to each other: learning is somehow an intrinsic part of all of them. On the other hand, cell formation (CF) and facility layout design are the two fundamental steps in the CMS implementation. To get a successful CMS design, addressing the interrelated decisions simultaneously is important. In this article, a new nonlinear mixed-integer programming model is presented which comprehensively considers solving the integrated dynamic cell formation and inter/intracell layouts in continuous space. In the proposed model, cells are configured in flexible shapes during the planning horizon considering cell capacity in each period. This study considers the exact information about facility layout design and material handling cost. The proposed model is an NP-hard mixed-integer nonlinear programming model. To optimize the proposed problem, first, three metaheuristic algorithms, that is, Genetic Algorithm (GA), Keshtel Algorithm (KA), and Red Deer Algorithm (RDA), are employed. Then, to further improve the quality of the solutions, using machine learning approaches and combining the results of the aforementioned algorithms, a new metaheuristic algorithm is proposed. Numerical examples, sensitivity analyses, and comparisons of the performances of the algorithms are conducted.

Resumen
Printed circuit boards (PCBs) are being widely used in the electronic packages. Solder joints are often used to interconnect chip resistors and other components onto PCBs. The defects of solder joints will increase quality costs and deteriorate performance. If solder joints cant be located accuracy, AOI system will not inspect solder joints at the right place of solder joints and must lead to misjudgement. Especially, the misjudgement will increase dramatically under uncertain noise disturbance to micro-size solder joints due to inaccuracy location. In this work, an eliminating uncertain noise method is proposed and a robust location algorithm for PCBs solder joints is present. Firstly, some location windows are set based on technology parameters of chip and its solder joints, and solder joints feature image is obtained from it solder joint image based on series of image pre-processing. Secondly, the layout frame outside solder joints, which is viewed as a noise disturbance to location, is extracted as a binary image and is projected to X axis and Y axis, then the smaller region, which include solder joints but no the layout frame, is obtained based on calculating the sum features function of layout frame. Thirdly, the blob feature image of solder joints is extracted from its gray images of red, green, blue layers; it may have some noise blob around solder joints feature, then an evaluation function is develop to judge blob, which maybe belongs to noise or solder joints feature, and only solder joints feature are remained. Fourthly, with the help of setting solder joints windows, the integrated projection method is developed to locate solder joints. Finally, the proposed location method is compared with other two algorithms in the experiment. Experiments result illustrates that the smaller the solder joint size, the better location accuracy and efficiency is obtained than other two mothers.

Resumen
Abstract. An optimization framework for simultaneous design of wind turbines (WTs) and cable layout for a collection system of offshore wind farms (OWFs) is presented in this paper. The typical approach used in both research and practical design is sequential, with an initial annual energy production (AEP) maximization, followed then by the collection system design. The sequential approach is robust and effective. However it fails to exploit the synergies between optimization blocks. Intuitively, one of the strongest trade-offs is between the WTs and cable layout, as they generally compete; i.e. spreading out WTs mitigates wake losses for larger AEP but also results in longer submarine cables in the collection system and higher costs. The proposed optimization framework implements a gradient-free optimization algorithm to smartly move the WTs within the project area subject to minimum distance constraint, while a fast heuristic algorithm is called in every function evaluation in order to calculate a cost estimation of the cable layout. In a final stage, a refined cable layout design is obtained by iteratively solving a mixed integer linear programme (MILP), modelling all typical engineering constraints of this particular problem. A comprehensive performance analysis of the cost estimation from the fast heuristic algorithm with respect to the exact model is carried out. The applicability of the method is illustrated through a large-scale real-world case study. Results shows that (i) the quality of the cable layout estimation is strongly dependent on the separation between WTs, where dense WT layouts present better performance parameters in terms of error, correlation, and computing time, and (ii) the proposed simultaneous design approach provides up to 6 % of improvement on the quality of fully feasible wind farm designs, and broadly, a statistically significant enhancement is ensured in spite of the stochasticity of the optimization algorithm.

Resumen
Purpose In today’s competitive market, product demand and its mix frequently vary due to various uncertainties, which thus imparts the overall manufacturing cost. Furthermore, uncertainties also impart the layout design in manufacturing industries in the long run. Therefore, the layout design needs to capture the possibility of uncertainties, and these uncertainties must be captured while designing the layout of a facility. Hence, an efficient facility layout design minimizes the manufacturing cost and lead time. The purpose of this paper is to propose a cellular layout design for a tower manufacturing industry. Design/methodology/approach The paper develops an embedded simulated annealing-based meta-heuristic to solve proposed cellular layout under different scenarios considering single and multi-time periods for tower manufacturing industry. A comparative study is also performed to analyze comparison among static cellular layout, a dynamic cellular layout or a robust stochastic cellular layout for the tower manufacturing industry. Findings The current layout of the industry is a process layout. Here, the layout for a tower manufacturing industry is proposed under SCFLP, DCFLP and RSCFLP. The proposed models and solution methodology is tested using six scenarios with different combination of time periods. Lastly, OFV value obtained for all the scenarios is compared, and it is found that RSCFLP outruns other SCFLP and DCFLP for a tower manufacturing industry. Based on the above study, it is also concluded that RSCFLP is an efficient and effective layout in tower manufacturing industry. Originality/value The paper proposes a cellular layout design for a tower manufacturing industry. The cellular layout design is found to be preferred over the traditional layout as it reduces material handling cost, manufacturing lead time and hazards. Moreover, it enhances productivity and quality.

Resumen
The static stiffness and numerical modal are analyzed with the finite element model of a heavy duty truck cab. Considering the influence of welding spots on static stiffness, strength and first order modal frequency, the welding spots of the heavy duty truck cab are divided into two areas based on element strain energy density. And welding spot layout of the two areas is optimized by topology optimization method respectively. Then the robustness of welding spot layout before and after optimization is analyzed. The results show that the number of welding spots after optimization is reduced with the performance maintained and welding spot layout robustness of the cab is improved.

Resumen
The design of circuits which are robust against variations in operating and process conditions is crucial in today's IC industry. In the analog design flow this problem can be tackled during the sizing of a new circuit. However, hardly any methods are available which support the designer to compute such a robust design if discrete parameters should be considered in this design step. Discrete parameters arise predominantly if a layout-friendly sizing should be computed in the sense that, e.g., a manufacturing grid for the transistor lengths and widths is considered or that transistor multipliers are used to allow the layout of a transistor as multifinger or common centroid structure without applying rounding operations to the carefully computed sizing. This paper presents a new Branch-and-Bound based approach which allows the automatic computation of a robust design using classical and realistic worst case analysis. The results of the sizing of three circuits show that the new approach is highly efficient. The robustness of the results computed by the new approach is validated by Monte Carlo analyses.

Resumen
With the rapid development of aerospace industries, how to realize the automatic and optimized pipe-routing layout for the aero-engine has become a hot issue to be urgently solved. For the issue, a novel automatic and optimized pipe-routing layout method based on the improved artificial fish swarm algorithm was put forward in this paper. First, the mathematical model of the pipe-routing layout problem was established. Then, in view of the deficiencies of the artificial fish swarm algorithm, chaos mutation was used to carry out easy and rapid searching as well as robust escape from the local optimum, and gradient setting was used to raise the convergence speed and the solving accuracy.Further, the improved artificial fish swarm algorithm was applied to the pipe-routing layout for the aero-engine. At the end, the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed method was proved by a case study.

Resumen
Although HVAC (Heating Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) layout design has transitioned from 2D drawings to 3D BIM models, the traditional manual process of sizing and placing terminal units is still a time-consuming task, which can lead to inappropriate airflow and wastage of resources due to human error. The purpose of this paper is to develop a highly robust method for sizing and placing HVAC terminal units in rooms, while also systematically avoiding obstacles based on the locations of air terminal units and FCUs (Fan Coil Units) to which they belong. The method employs a “scan” approach to solve the problem of insufficient robustness caused by the traditional grid division method. Rule-based iterative algorithms are utilized for the sizing of terminals, airflow verification, and obstacle avoidance to generate a complete set of FCU and CAV (Constant Air Volume) system terminal layouts within a building. The method was tested for the automated design of HVAC terminal layouts in six different buildings and successfully completed the task within seconds, demonstrating the method’s immediacy and robustness. Moreover, airflow organization tests showed that the terminal layouts generated by the algorithm had a 95% pass rate, indicating the effectiveness of the method.

Resumen
One important source of variability in the performance and success of products designed for use by people is the people themselves. In many cases, the acceptability of the design is affected more by the variability in the human users than by the variability attributable to the hardware from which the product is constructed. Designing for human variability as an inherent part of the product optimization process can improve the overall performance of the product. This paper presents a new approach to artifact design that applies population sampling and stochastic posture prediction in an optimization environment to achieve optimal designs that are robust to variability among users, including differences in age, physical size, strength, and cognitive capability. A case study involving the layout of the interior of a heavy truck cab is presented, focusing on simultaneous placement of the seat and steering-wheel adjustment ranges. Trade-offs between adjustability (an indicator of cost), driver accommodation, and safety are explored under this paradigm.

Resumen
This paper presents a new method to achieve effective text extraction using mathematical morphology. Firstly, the document is segmented and divided into several parts based on the layout. And then, every part is dilated to big connected regions, whose biggest skeleton will be extracted and serve as a structure element (SE). Finally, a proposed region-concatenated operation with the SE will be employed, whose result can be the input of subsequent OCR system. Experimentally, the proposed method is robust to noise, the text orientation, font style and size, language and layout.

Resumen
AbstractBased on a connection matrix and a cost matrix, a mathematical model is presented to describe the optimization evaluation of the layout scenarios of subsea cluster manifolds in ocean engineering at the lowest cost. The connection facilities are considered, including jumpers, pipeline end terminations (PLETs), and infield flowlines. The dedicated series-iteration algorithms programed by MATLAB are conducted to solve this complex nonlinear 0‐1 programming problem. Additionally, numerical simulations are performed to demonstrate the validity of the model and the performance of its algorithms. The results show that the proposed model can precisely describe the layout characteristics of cluster manifolds in engineering and the dedicated algorithms are quite robust. Possible layout scenarios with three-to-eight cluster manifolds for 22 subsea wells can be obtained, from which the optimal one with the lowest cost can be found by comparison. This approach can provide quantitative and efficient references to engineers to assist them in making their decisions in the layout of subsea production systems.

Resumen
An extended pattern search algorithm is introduced for efficient component layout optimization. The algorithm is applicable to general layout problems, where component geometry can be arbitrary, design goals can be multiple and spatial constraint satisfactions can be of different types. Extensions to pattern search are introduced to help the algorithm to converge to optimal solutions by escaping inferior local minima. The performance on all of the test problems shows that the algorithm runs one-to-two orders of magnitude faster than a robust simulated annealing-based algorithm for results with the same quality. The algorithm is further extended to solve a concurrent layout and routing problem, which demonstrates the ability of the algorithm to apply new pattern strategies in search and to include different objective functions in optimization. Resumen
Design of autonomous underwater vehicles is deeply influenced by required mission specifications. In particular, some activities like inspection of offshore plants or harsh marine environments require underwater vehicle with high autonomy, good propulsion performances and manoeuvrability. These features are deeply influenced by design and performances of the propulsion system. In particular, performances of underwater vehicles (both remotely operated and autonomous) are deeply influenced by four quadrants performances of propellers and by complex fluid dynamics interactions that are difficult to be, even roughly, evaluated. In this work, a study of a reconfigurable propulsion layout and its comparison with a conventional one is introduced. In particular, this study is also focused on modelling techniques that should really represent a reasonable trade-off in terms of accuracy and involved computational resources for fast prototyping and simulation of this kind of mechatronic systems.
