Nowadays, autonomous vehicles are an increasing trend as the major players of this sector, and not only, are focused in developing autonomous cars. The two main advantages of autonomous cars are the higher convenience for the passengers and more safety for the passengers and for the people around, which is what this thesis focus on. Sometimes, due to distraction or another reasons, the driver does not see an object on the road and crash or a pedestrian in the cross walk and the person is run over. This is one of the questions that an ADAS or an autonomous car tries to solve and due to the huge relevance of this more research have been done in this area. One of the most applied systems for ADAS are digital cameras, that provide complex information about the surrounding environment, in addition to LIDAR sensor and others. Following this trend, the use of stereo vision systems is increasing - systems with two cameras, and in this context a question comes up: "what is the ideal distance between the cameras in a stereo system for object and pedestrian detection?". This thesis shows all the development of a stereo vision system: from the development of the necessary software for calculating the objects and pedestrians distance form the setup using two cameras, to the design of a xing system for the cameras that allows the study of stereo for di erent baselines. In order to study the in uence of the baseline and the focal distance a pedestrian, walking through previously marked positions, and a xed object, were recorded, in an exterior scenario. The results were analyzed by comparing the automatically calculated distance, using the application, with the real value measured. It was concluded, in the end, that the distance of pedestrians and objects can be calculated, with minimal error, using the software developed and the xing support system. However, the best results were achieved for the 0.3m baseline and for the 8mm lens.

Texto completoThe dynamic contact models for tyre/road noise are often based on a quasi-static assumption and a half-space approximation for the tyre. The aim of the thesis is to assess these assumptions by measuring contact forces on a test rig composed of a smooth reduced-sized tyre rolling on a cylindrical basis. Beforehand, the experimental modal analysis of the tyre allows the identification of eigenmodes of classical shapes. Although a finite element model based on a homogeneous elastic tyre section yields satisfactory modes, a hyper-viscoelastic heterogeneous section provides a good compromise between vibrations and static contact. The dynamic contact force on a single spherical or conical asperity during rolling of the tyre is then measured. The relationship between the maximum force and the height of the asperity is consistent with theoretical contact laws. The contact duration on the asperity is inversely proportional to the speed. The contact calculations based on an elastic half-space assumption lead to a proper estimation of the maximum force measured on high asperity heights, but not on low asperity heights. The dissymmetry of the force time signal is well modelled by introducing the viscoelasticity in the model. The dynamic contact forces measured between the tyre and several asperities of simple shapes confirm the previous results, demonstrating the quasistatic nature of the rolling contact. However, the calculated forces are underestimated at the edges of the contact area, showing a limitation of the half-space assumption to describe the tyre structure

Correctly identifying the road area on an image is a crucial task for many traffic analyses based on surveillance cameras and computer vision. Despite that, most of the systems do not provide this functionality in an automatic fashion; instead, the road area needs to be annotated by tedious and inefficient manual processes. This situation results in further inconveniences when one deals with a lot of cameras, demanding considerable effort to setup the system. Besides, since traffic analysis is an outdoor activity, cameras are exposed to disturbances due to natural events (e.g., wind, rain and bird strikes), which may require recurrent system reconfiguration. Although there are some solutions intended to provide automatic road detection, they are not capable of dealing with common situations in urban context, such as poorly-structured roads or occlusions due to objects stopped in the scene. Moreover in many cases they are restricted to straight-shaped roads (commonly freeways or highways), so that automatic road detection cannot be provided in most of the traffic scenarios. In order to cope with this problem, we propose a new approach for road detection. Our method is based on a set of innovative solutions, each of them intended to address specific problems related to the detection task. In this sense, a context-aware background modeling method has been developed, which extracts contextual information from the scene in order to produce background models more robust to occlusions. From this point, segmentation is performed to extract the shape of each object in the image; this is accomplished by means of a superpixel method specially designed for road segmentation, which allows for detection of roads with any shape. For each extracted segment we then compute a set of features, the goal of which is supporting a decision tree-based classifier in the task of assigning the objects as being road or non-road. The formulation of our method — a road detection carried out by a combination of multiple features — makes it able to deal with situations where the road is not easily distinguishable from other objects in the image, as when the road is poorly-structured. A thorough evaluation has indicated promising results in favour of this method. Quantitatively, the results point to 75% of accuracy, 90% of precision and 82% of recall over challenging traffic videos caught in non-controlled conditions. Qualitatively, resulting images demonstrate the potential of the method to perform road detection in different situations, in many cases obtaining quasi-perfect results.
