Resumen
Equations for solving the deflection and bending moments of rhombic plates by exact method are known to be highly tedious. A set of simplified equations is developed for design purposes of such simply supported plates under uniform load. Curve-fitting from exact data allows the deflection and its second derivatives, evaluated at the plate centre, to be expressed in greatly simplified and yet sufficiently accurate empirical models for thin rhombic plates. Using the simplified model, it is shown that the maximum bending moment can be reduced by using auxetic materials. By including the effects of shear deformation for thick rhombic plates, it is demonstrated that the ratio of shear-to-bending deformation decreases as the rhombic plate approaches a square shape and as the plate’s Poisson’s ratio becomes more negative.

Resumen
This is the first known work which explicitly considers the bending stress singularities that occur in the two opposite, obtuse corner angles of simply supported rhombic plates undergoing free, transverse vibration. The importance of these singularities increases as the rhombic plate becomes highly skewed (i.e., the obtuse angles increase). The analysis is carried out by the Ritz method using a hybrid set consisting of two types of displacement functions, e.g., (1) algebraic polynomials and (2) corner functions accounting for the singularities in the obtuse corners. It is shown that the corner functions accelerate the convergence of solution, and that these functions are required if accurate solutions are to be obtained for highly skewed plates. Accurate nondimensional frequencies and normalized contours of the vibratory transverse displacement are presented for simply supported rhombic plates with skew angles ranging to 75 deg. (i.e., obtuse angles of 165 deg.). Frequency and mode shapes of isosceles and right triangular plates with all edges simply supported are also available from the data presented.

Resumen
Veatchite polytypes were properly identified from several localities relying solely on micro powder diffraction data. Diagnostic differences in their respective calculated patterns gave reliable identification results when compared with measured data. This permitted the confirmation of co-existing veatchite-1A and -2M on the same specimen from the Billie Mine, Inyo County, California as flat elongated crystals (-1A) and flat rhombic plates (-2M), respectively. On the specimen from the Sterling Borax Mine (Lang), type-locality for veatchite-2M, the polytype veatchite-1A was confirmed from radiating rhombic plates. From the type specimen for veatchite-1A (rhombic plates), collected from the borate deposit in Emet, Turkey, an additional unknown polytype of this mineral was discovered, but lacks suitable material for a complete characterization. At the Penobsquis deposit near Sussex in New Brunswick, Canada, only veatchite-2M was encountered. The area between 20 and 25°2θ holds the following diffraction signatures: -1A (two sets of double peaks at approximately 21.5 and 24.5°2θ), -1M (single peaks at 20 and 23°2θ) and -2M (double peaks at 20 and 23°2θ). The unknown polytype from Emet, Turkey differs from polytype-1A in that same range by having single peaks at the 21.5 and 24.5° instead of double peaks.

Resumen
Blasticidin S deaminase from Aspergillus terreus was crystallized with polyethylene glycol 8000. Two types of crystals were grown under the same crystallization conditions. One type grew as thin plates, while the other had a rhombic shape. The rhombic shaped crystal was suitable for high-resolution crystal structure analysis. Precession photographs and diffraction data showed that the crystal belonged to orthorhombic space group P212121, with unit-cell dimensions a = 70.33, b = 146.56 and c = 56.48 Å. The calculated Vm value was acceptable when a tetramer of the enzyme was contained in an asymmetric unit. Preliminary diffraction data were collected to a resolution of 2.0 Å with good statistics.

This study examines stability and vibrations of preloaded functionally graded material skewed rhombic plates with internal cracks using three-dimensional elasticity with MLS-Ritz method. Choosing appropriate functions from the three-dimensional asymptotic solutions at a crack tip to form the enriched basis functions of the admissible functions constructed by the moving least square method in x-y plane. The admissible functions correctly account for the singular behaviors of stresses at crack tips and the discontinuities of displacement across a crack. The FGM plates are designed as the composites of aluminum and ceramic, and the variety of material properties following a simple power law. The study first shows the convergence of buckling loads and vibrational frequencies of functionally graded material rhombic plates with central vertical internal cracks and compares the convergent results with the published ones. The proposed solutions are further employed to investigate the effects of plate thickness, variations of material properties, skew angles, and crack lengths and angles on the buckling loads and vibrational frequencies of cracked FGM skewed rhombic plates under different inplane loading conditions and boundary conditions. Most of the results are shown for first time in the literature, and they can be used to benchmark data for other solutions based on different plate theories and by different numerical methods.

Resumen
<p>The recently opened 1915Çanakkale bridge 300 km south-east of Istanbul has a main span of over two kilometres and a total length of 4,608 m.</p><p>Based on the bridge kinematics, complex expansion joints at both main deck ends with movements of up to 2800 mm, low noise emission and highest durability were required.</p><p>In addition, the approach bridges to the main bridge, which are seismically isolated, requested large transversal movements.</p><p>So-called modular swivel joist expansion joints allow six degrees of freedom: displacements transverse, longitudinal and vertical to the direction of traffic as well as any kind of rotations can be compensated, to address the specific needs of a suspension bridge located in a highly seismic region. The expansion joint structure, consisting of bars supporting the lamellas, features a new low-friction, almost wear-free guiding system with a next generation of sliding material. This prevents restraints, provides a superior smoothly controlled movement mechanism, and increases the service life to at least 50 years.</p><p>Particularly, an approved sliding material (modified UHMWPE, pre-loaded and equipped with greased dimples within the moving components, which has been successfully applied for two decades in the bridge bearings, grants proper function for a certified accumulated travel path of 50+ kilometres even combined with high seismic displacement velocities. A more precise prismatic guide mechanism was developed to achieve a permanent contact between all relevant sliding elements.</p><p>In this way both the bridge bearings and the expansion joints systems can reach the same certified nominal life and durability while resisting major earthquakes without damage.</p><p>The expansion joints were additionally equipped on their surface with welded rhombic steel plates to remarkably reduce the noise, increase the driving comfort and assure a durable anti-skid resistant across the overpassing surface. Also, welded instead of bolted applications within the construction enhance fatigue-proof and durable service lifetime of the applied expansion joints.</p><p>The joints of the approach bridges were designed with special rhombic steel plates that allow also large transversal movements.</p>

Resumen
Microchannel are at the fore front of today’s cooling technologies. They are widely being considered for cooling of electronic devices and in micro heat exchanger systems due to their ease of manufacture. One issue which arises in the use of microchannels is related to the small length scale of the channel or channel cross-section. In this work, the maximum heat transfer and the optimum geometry for a given pressure loss have been calculated for forced convective heat transfer in microchannels of various cross-section having finite volume for laminar flow conditions. Solutions are presented for 10 different channel cross sections, namely parallel plate channel, circular duct, rectangular channel, elliptical duct, polygonal ducts, equilateral triangular duct, isosceles triangular duct, right triangular duct, rhombic duct and trapezoidal duct. The model is only a function of Prandtl number and geometrical parameters of the cross-section, i.e., area and perimeter. This solution is performed with two exact and approximate methods. Finally, in addition to comparison and discussion about these two methods, validation of the relationship is provided using results from the open literature.

Resumen
Industrial dual-arm robots have been gaining attention as novel tools in the field of new automation. Our past research has focused on using them flexibly to control both the linear and rotational motions of a working plate. However, it has been difficult to measure the synchronous accuracy of two rotary axes without a high-accuracy gyro sensor. We therefore developed a novel method to measure the synchronous accuracy of the two rotary axes of a working plate with a ball, in which the ball is kept rolling around a circular path by dual-arm cooperative control. In the present report, in order to widen the range of application, we tried to keep the ball rolling around a rhomboid path, which is one of the polygonal paths used on a working plate by dual-arm cooperative control. It could be seen that there is some possibility of generating an equal speed diamond motion by inputting wave as the odd power of a trigonometric function and considered a deceleration angle with the robot that we handled.

Resumen
The period of King Milutin’s reign, marked by the strengthening and expan- sion of the Serbian state, is important for the manuscript book, primarily because of its increased production, caused by the building of a larger number of churches and monasteries, but also in artistic terms, due to the frequent appearance of new ornamental motifs. At that time, there was a gradual change in the decoration of manuscript books created in Serbian scriptoriums. Teratological motifs, which will continue to appear sporadically, give way to geometric-intertwined forms. In the adapted style of the books of this period, there are three basic geometric mo- tifs - a circle, a knot and a rhomboid ring that form various decorative surfaces - from very small discrete flags to those that can occupy an entire page. In addition to flags, initials also have a special place. They can be simpler - geometrically or more developed - intertwined. The period of King Milutin’s long reign is also characterized by the codification of liturgical books according to the Jerusalem typikon, which, among other things, led to the fact that books that were once separate (eg, Prophetologion) became part of other liturgical books. This also affects the artistic design of books, because each liturgical book has recognizable places, highlighted with decorative motifs. At this time at the end of the 13th and the beginning of the 14th century, in the long process of creating books, the use of extremely high quality parchment and ink is striking, as evidenced by their current state. Considering that only a small number of those codices that had to exist at that time have been preserved, for the sake of a more complete idea of their illumina- tion at that time, quite discreet decorations are included in the research. The illu- mination of Serbian books, as well as the entire artistic creation in the considered period, developed within the framework of the Byzantine cultural, spiritual and aesthetic circle. On some pages of the code, however, the original solutions of talented Serbian illuminators and calligraphers are noticeable. This primarily re- fers to the intertwined geometric-floral style, which will reach its full expression in rich compositional solutions during the 14th century.
