Resumen
The application of the Appel-Vozlinsky theorem on the stability or instability conditions for bifurcation points of conservative elastic systems with a symmetric bifurcation diagram to evaluate restabilization possibility of structures under loads substantially larger than the first critical force. It is shown that restabilization is possible if the first eigenvalue of the Hesse matrix is a continuous alternating function of the load parameter, and the remaining eigenvalues are sign-definite quantities. The examples of the systems with restabilization are given: a high Mises girder and an elastic system composed of compressible rods.

Resumen
While the literature has characterized balance control during quasi-static and/or dynamic tasks, comparatively few studies have examined relationships across paradigms. This study investigated whether quiet-stance postural steadiness metrics were associated with reactive control parameters (during both stepping and restabilization phases) following a lean-and-release perturbation. A total of 40 older adults participated. Postural steadiness (center of the pressure range, root mean square, velocity, and frequency) was evaluated in “feet together” and “tandem stance” positions. During the reactive control trials, the step length, step width, movement time, and reaction time were measured, in addition to the postural steadiness variables measured during the restabilization phase following the stepping response. Out of 64 comparisons, only 10 moderate correlations were observed between postural steadiness and reactive spatio-temporal stepping parameters (P ≤ .05, r = −.312 to −.534). However, postural steadiness metrics were associated with the center of pressure velocity and frequency during the restabilization phase of the reactive control trials (P ≤ .02, r = .383 to .775 for velocity and P ≤ .01, r = .386 to .550 for frequency). Although some elements of quasi-static center of pressure control demonstrated moderate associations with dynamic stepping responses, relationships were stronger for restabilization phase dynamics after foot-contact. Future work should examine the potential association between restabilization phase control and older adult fall-risk.

Resumen
The flow of an incompressible viscous fluid between parallel plates becomes unstable when the plates are tumbled. As the tumbling rate increases, the flow restabilizes. This phenomenon is elucidated by path-following techniques. The solution of the Navier-Stokes equations is approximated by spectral techniques. The linear stability of these solutions is studied.

Resumen
Memory is not a stable record of experience, but instead is an ongoing process that allows existing memories to be modified with new information through a reconsolidation-dependent updating process. For a previously stable memory to be updated, the memory must first become labile through a process called destabilization. Destabilization is a protein degradation-dependent process that occurs when new information is presented. Following destabilization, a memory becomes stable again through a protein synthesis-dependent process called restabilization. Much work remains to fully characterize the mechanisms that underlie both destabilization and subsequent restabilization, however. In this article, we briefly review the discovery of reconsolidation as a potential mechanism for memory updating. We then discuss the behavioral paradigms that have been used to identify the molecular mechanisms of reconsolidation-dependent memory updating. Finally, we outline what is known about the molecular mechanisms that support the memory updating process. Understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying reconsolidation-dependent memory updating is an important step toward leveraging this process in a therapeutic setting to modify maladaptive memories and to improve memory when it fails.

Resumen
Family homelessness has increased dramatically in the past decade, but little attention has been focused on the process by which homeless families become restabilized. The author presents findings from a qualitative study of the restabilisation process. Four factors that affect the process are discussed: children, personal resources, external resources, and socioeconomic context. The findings indicate the significant role shelter staff and other social service providers can play in assisting mothers in both emotional and instrumental ways. Implications for direct practice with homeless mothers and their families are discussed as well as implications for policy and program development.

Resumen
Stair descent is one of the most common forms of daily locomotion and concurrently one of the most challenging and hazardous daily activities performed by older adults. Thus, sufficient attention should be devoted to this locomotion and to the factors that affect it. This study investigates gender and age-related differences in balance control during and after stair descent on a foam mat. Forty-seven older adults (70% women) and 38 young adults (58% women) performed a descent from one step onto a foam mat. Anteroposterior (AP) and mediolateral (ML) centre of pressure velocity (CoP) and standard deviation of the CoP sway were investigated during stair descent and restabilization. A two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed the main effects of age for the first 5 s of restabilization. Older women exhibited significantly higher values of CoP sway and velocity in both directions compared to the younger individuals (CoP SDAP5, 55%; CoP SDML5, 30%; CoP VAP5, 106%; CoP VML5, 75%). Men achieved significantly higher values of CoP sway and velocity only in the AP direction compared to their younger counterparts (CoP SDAP5, 50% and CoP VAP5, 79%). These findings suggest that with advancing age, men are at higher risk of forward falls, whereas women are at higher risk of forward and sideways falls.

Resumen
For nonlinear oscillators with the ability to escape from a potential well, jumps to resonance from a fold can result in qualitatively different types of response. They may be safe where the system always restabilizes onto a oscillation within the well; unsafe where the system always escapes out of the well; or indeterminate where the outcome is unpredictable. In the indeterminate case, long chaotic transients may persist before the system decides to which long-term behavior it will settle upon. We determine at which control parameters indeterminate jumps occur. We also examine how the transients scale as well as the probability of restabilization after the bifurcation.

Resumen
We study the decoupling effects in one-loop corrected N = 1 supersymmetric theory with gauge neutral chiral superfields, by calculating the one-loop corrected effective Lagrangian that involves light and heavy fields with the mass scale M, and subsequently eliminating heavy fields by their equations of motion. In addition to new non-renormalizable couplings, we determine the terms that grow as log M. In a model derived from superstring theory, these terms can significantly modify low-energy predictions for the effective couplings of light fields. For example, in a class of heterotic superstring vacua with an anomalous U(1) the vacuum restabilization introduces such decoupling effects which in turn correct the low energy predictions for certain couplings by 10–50%.

Resumen
Fracture stabilization using circular external skeletal fixation was evaluated in 14 dogs with antebrachial fractures and 11 dogs with crural fractures. Most dogs were consistently weight bearing on the stabilized limb by 3 days following surgery. Although all dogs developed minor wire/pin tract inflammation and eight dogs developed major wire/pin tract inflammation, postoperative lameness was not consistently associated with wire/pin tract complications. Fractures in 23 dogs achieved radiographic union (mean±standard deviation [SD], 61±21 days; median, 57 days) without additional surgery; two dogs required restabilization of their fractures with linear fixators. Twenty of the 21 owners that could be contacted felt their dog had no (n=15) or only a mild (n=5) intermittent lameness at the time of final, long-term (mean±SD, 37±17 months; median, 42 months) assessment.

Resumen
AbstractThe influence of thermal buoyancy on neutral wave modes in Poiseuille-Couette flow is considered. We examine the modifications to the asymptotic structure first described by Mureithi, Denier & Stott [16], who demonstrated that neutral wave modes in a strongly thermally stratified boundary layer are localized at the position where the streamwise velocity attains its maximum value. The present work demonstrates that such a flow structure also holds for Poiseuille-Couette flow but that a new flow structure emerges as the position of maximum velocity approaches the wall (and which occurs as the level of shear, present as a consequence of the Couette component of the flow, is increased). The limiting behaviour of these wave modes is discussed thereby allowing us to identify the parameter regime appropriate to the eventual restabilization of the flow at moderate levels of shear.

Resumen
An analytical model based on variational principles for a thin-walled stiffened plate subjected to axial compression is presented. A system of nonlinear differential and integral equations is derived and solved using numerical continuation. The results show that the system is susceptible to highly unstable local–global mode interaction after an initial instability is triggered. Moreover, snap-backs in the response showing sequential destabilization and restabilization, known as cellular buckling or snaking, arise. The analytical model is compared with static finite element (FE) models for joint conditions between the stiffener and the main plate that have significant rotational restraint. However, it is known from previous studies that the behaviour, where the same joint is insignificantly restrained rotationally, is captured better by an analytical approach than by standard FE methods; the latter being unable to capture cellular buckling behaviour even though the phenomenon is clearly observed in laboratory experiments.

Resumen
The seemingly random triumph and demise of new political parties in Central and Eastern Europe actually represent a durable subsystem with relevance for party systems around the world. This article supplements existing research on volatility with new measures of party age distribution that reveal clear patterns of disruption, turnover and restabilization. These patterns emerge from stable and coherent party subsystems that follow a simple model based on three dynamics: losses by established parties, rapid gains by uncorrupted newcomers, and equally rapid newcomer losses to even newer parties. Confirmed both by electoral evidence and computer simulations, this model offers insight into the endurance of these subsystems, particularly since the very mechanisms that generate new parties’ success can preclude their ability to survive in subsequent elections. Central and Eastern European party systems offer a laboratory for understanding trends in party system volatility that are emerging in Western Europe and across the globe.

Resumen
A conical flame, in the presence of high-frequency (≈1000 Hz) and high-amplitude acoustic modulation of the cold gases, deforms to a shape which is approximately hemispherical. It is shown that the acoustic level required to produce a hemispherical flame is such that the ratio of acoustic velocity to laminar combustion velocity is about 3. This flame flattening is equivalent to the phenomenon of acoustic restabilization observed for cellular flames propagating in tubes. The transition between the conical flame and a hemispherical flame is described. The surface area of the reaction zone of the flame is found to be unmodified when the flame flattens. The velocity field at the burner outlet is examined with and without a flame. The mean flow lines are strongly deflected when the hemispherical flame is present. We show that the presence of the flame creates an unusual situation where the oscillating flow controls the geometry of the mean flow.
