Texto completoSoftware defined radio receiver is a promising technique for future receivers which provides a variety of protocols. It digitizes the RF signal directly to low-frequency. We propose an SDR receiver based on a bandpass sigma delta modulator. The most essential element is the loop filter, there are two main configurations, an LC tank resonator and an active RC resonator. We focus on the active RC resonators for a low chip area. We target applications in the vicinity of 400 MHz, namely Advanced Research and Global Observation Satellite, Medical Implant Communication Service. We introduce a new comparison between the two-op-amp resonator CT BP sigma delta modulator and the one-op-amp resonator CT BP sigma delta modulator. We study the sensitivity of the quality factor and the signal to noise ratio to the DC-gain op-amps in two-op-amp resonator sigma delta modulator. It also shows how, in one-op-amp resonator sigma delta modulator, the quality factor and the signal to noise ratio, are very sensitive to any variations in the capacitors values for limited DC-gain op-amps. We establish a mathematical model of the thermal-noise behaviour for two-op-amp resonator CT BP sigma delta modulator. This model matches the circuit simulator results with a good accuracy. Furthermore, we demonstrate that a high quality factor (>100) of the two-op-amp resonators can be achieved by selecting the proper value of the integrator gain at a moderate DC-gain op-amp (35dB). Both sigma delta modulators are designed using flipped-well devices on fully depleted silicon on insulator technology, where we use body biasing to compensate the process, voltage and temperature variations

Texto completoIn this work, a theoretical and experimental study of two cascaded semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOA) in a counter-propagating topology was performed. This study was aimed at exploiting cross gain modulation (XGM) in order to device new all-optical functions for optical communication systems. In a first stage, the theroretical and experimental static characterization of the configuration established the possibility to renforce significantly the gain non-linearity of the two SOAs, leading to either a positive or a negative variation for the gain as a function of the input optical power. Thus, a large extinction ratio can be reached even for a small variation of the incident power. This property can be exploited in order to ensure 2R regeneration. Moreover, this study made it possible to determine those parameters of the configuration that optimize the extinction ratio, in particular the length and the small-signal gain of both SOAs. In a second stage, a dynamic characterization of the configuration was performed, which showed the influence of gain saturation on the frequency and time responses at the output of the two SOAs. Evaluating the rate that can be reached with such a structure revealed a strong dependence on the interconnection distance althought this can be reduced thought integration. Finally, several all-optical functions were devised with the studied configuration, such as an all-opticals switch, a NOR gate, a wavelength conversion function (either direct or inverse) and an OR gate

Texto completoWave mixing in an inverted solid state laser material enables to record a population hologram that is both a gain and a refractive index hologram. This work first presents a detailed study of the electronic refractive index change that is due to a polarizability change of the ions when they are brought from the ground state to the excited state. A part of the effect comes from the presence of intense UV bands, an effect that is purely dispersive at the wavelength of the laser transition. We evaluated the non resonant polarisability changes of Nd3+ and Yb3+ ions in the main laser materials and we have studied the nature of the optical transitions at the origin of the observed refractive index variations. We then used these results to predict the potential of the laser materials in a non-degenerate two-wave mixing process for wavelengths in the vicinity of the laser transition. This model has been experimentally validated in a Nd3+:YAG crystal fiber. The study of the energy transfer from one beam to another is of great interest for applications such as phasing of N fiber lasers and self- adaptive interferometry. In addition, a diode-pumped self-adaptive laser resonator was realised and we obtained high energy per pulse. This laser gave rise to efficiencies that are quite comparable with those of conventional lasers with additional advantages such as good beam quality, single-frequency operation and self-triggering of the pulse

Texto completoThis thesis deals with the gigahertz range reference frequency generation. In a first part, this document presents the design of a 500 MHz oscillator in a 65 nm CMOS process using a 2 GHz Bulk Acoustic Wave resonator. A digital frequency control is implemented using a switched capacitor bank in parallel to the resonator. The tuning range is up to 500 kHz with a minimum step of 200 Hz. The oscillator core uses a differential topology and is designed for low phase noise (-128 dBc/Hz at 100 kHz offset) at low power consumption (0.9 mW). It is followed by a low noise divider which provides a 500 MHz output with a phase noise of -139 dBc/Hz at 100 kHz offset from the carrier. In a second part, we consider a method for the calibration of a BAW based frequency reference. In fact, the frequency variations of a BAW oscillator against process, supply, temperature and aging effects make difficult its use as a frequency reference. We propose here a method based on Kalman filtering to identify with high precision a behavioral model of this BAW reference, thus enabling its use in an open loop frequency tuning. A precision of 0.4 ppm is achieved

Texto completoThe aim of this theory is to present a methodology for the design of high spectral purity microwave sources, featuring state of the art performance both at low and high offset frequencies. The origin of oscillator phase noise is due to different fluctuations or perturbations. But, the main contributor to this noise is the microwave transistor. The study of microwave amplifiers dedicated to low phase noise applications is thus the main subject of this manuscript. It is interesting to study transistor phase noise instead of oscillator phase noise, because a device in open loop configuration is easier to model or to characterize than an oscillating device. Therefore, our study has been firstly based on experimental results obtained from a phase noise measurement bench which some special techniques have been implemented to characterize ultra low phase noise devices. Selecting the appropriate device and using this transistor in appropriate operating conditions are some keys of success in low phase noise oscillator design. This involves a good knowledge of the noise generation mechanisms. The transistor phase noise is indeed not entirely related to the device low frequency noise properties. .

Texto completoThe objectives of this thesis is the developement of two optoelectronic oscillator architectures dedicated to the generation of low noise microwave signals for radar applications. The first oscillator is based on the stabilization of the beatnote of a widely tunable dual-frequency laser with an optical fiber delay line. A fine analysis of the stabilization loop implemented with a 100 m long optical fiber allowed us to reach the technical limit fixed by the loop microwave amplifiers. The oscillator is tunable from 2. 5 to 5. 5 GHz by 2 MHz steps and present a phase noise power spectral density of -105 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz offset from the carrier (performance independent of the carrier frequency). The use of two optical fibers in a double delay lines architecture and of a fiber ring resonator as a delay line are also investigated. The second architecture developed is a coupled optoelectronic oscillator (COEO). The architecture, similar to a regenerative mode-locked laser, is realized by coupling a resonant laser cavity to a resonant optoelectronic loop. The developpement of this oscillator is based on a new architecture of SOA : an asymmetrical cladding semiconductor optical amplifier. This component offers better saturation power and lower intrinsic noise than the classical design. The COEO operates around 10 GHz. A phase noise power spectral density of -135 dBc/Hz is measured at 10 kHz offset from the carrier

Texto completoDuring this doctoral work, we have designed, fabricated and characterised gallium arsenide (GaAs) optomechanical disk nano-resonators, in a cryogenic environment. These disks which bear highly coupled (g 0 ≈ MHz) GHz mechanical modes and telecom wavelength (λ ≈ 1550 nm) optical modes, show high mechanical (> 10^4 ) and optical (> 10^5 ) quality factors at 3 K. However, despite these state of the art performances, the optomechanical sideband cooling mechanism of the mechanical motion is not efficient enough to reach the quantum groundstate (less than 1 phonon in average). To determine the limiting factors, we have presented a systematical study of the mechanical dissipation channels and shown that two-level systems (TLS) at the surface of the material play a major role. We have also studied pulsed optical excitation of our resonators, in order to avoid absorption and thermal phenomena which limit the optomechanical cooling. We thus have underlined two main properties of the pulsed excitation : average injected optical power, and repetition period of the pulses with respect to the relaxation times of our systems. Alternative optical control schemes of the mechanical nanoresonators have emerged, which could be coupled to ultra-cold operation (T << 1 K)

Texto completoThis work responds to an increased industrial need for on carrier signals with variable envelope amplification used by current telecommunications systems. These signals have a strong PAPR and an envelope statistical distribution centred below the envelope peak value, the reason why the telecom industrialists then require a robust and reliable high power amplifiers having an energy expenditure along of the envelope dynamics associated with an acceptable level of linearity. This document presents the results of the study and realization of two, high efficiency, Doherty Power Amplifiers (DPA) encapsulated in QFN plastic packages. The first is a conventional Doherty power Amplifier (DPA-SE) and the second is a dual-input Doherty power amplifier (DPA-DE). These C-band demonstrators are based on the use of Quasi-MMIC technology combining power bars based on the AlGaN/GaN transistors on SiC to matching circuits in ULRC technology. The Quasi-MMIC approach combined with Quasi-MMIC approach combined with QFN plastic package solution for better thermal behaviour management offers electrical performances similar to those of MMIC technology with very attractive coasts and manufacturing cycles. During this work, a new evaluation method for the transistors dedicated to the design of DPA was developed and implemented. The intensive use of 2.5D and 3D electromagnetic simulations made it possible to take into account the coupling effects existing between the different circuits in the QFN package environment. The results of the tests of the amplifiers realised and operating on 1GHz bandwidth validated the design method and showed that the advanced concepts associated with the Quasi-MMIC approach as well as plastic encapsulation technologies can generate innovative microwave functions. The characterizations of the DPA-DE have noted the interest inherent in the preformation of the excitation signals and the bias points of each stage of the amplifier
