Resumen
ABSTRACTMetallo-beta-lactamases (MBLs) are broad-spectrum, Zn(II)-dependent lactamases able to confer resistance to virtually every β-lactam antibiotic currently available. The large diversity of active-site structures and metal content among MBLs from different sources has limited the design of a pan-MBL inhibitor. GOB-18 is a divergent MBL from subclass B3 that is expressed by the opportunistic Gram-negative pathogenElizabethkingia meningoseptica. This MBL is atypical, since several residues conserved in B3 enzymes (such as a metal ligand His) are substituted in GOB enzymes. Here, we report the crystal structure of the periplasmic di-Zn(II) form of GOB-18. This enzyme displays a unique active-site structure, with residue Gln116 coordinating the Zn1 ion through its terminal amide moiety, replacing a ubiquitous His residue. This situation contrasts with that of B2 MBLs, where an equivalent His116Asn substitution leads to a di-Zn(II) inactive species. Instead, both the mono- and di-Zn(II) forms of GOB-18 are active against penicillins, cephalosporins, and carbapenems. In silicodocking and molecular dynamics simulations indicate that residue Met221 is not involved in substrate binding, in contrast to Ser221, which otherwise is conserved in most B3 enzymes. These distinctive features are conserved in recently reported GOB orthologues in environmental bacteria. These findings provide valuable information for inhibitor design and also posit that GOB enzymes have alternative functions.

Resumen
Red onion is one of the strategic horticulture commodities in Indonesia considering its function as the main ingredients of the basic ingredients of Indonesian cuisine. In an effort to increase production to supply national necessary, Central Java as the main center of red onion production should be able to predict the production of several periods ahead to maintain the balance of national production. The purpose of this research is to get the best model to forecast the production of red onion in Central Java by ARIMA, ANFIS, and hybrid ARIMA-ANFIS method. Model accuracy is measured by the smallest RMSE and AIC values. The results show that the best model to modeling red onion production in Central Java is obtained by hybrid ARIMA-ANFIS model which is a combination between SARIMA ([2], 1, [12]) and residual ARIMA using ANFIS model with input et,1, et,2 on the grid partition technique, gbell membership function, and membership number of 2 that produce RMSE 12033 and AIC 21.6634. While ARIMA model yield RMSE 13301,24 and AIC 21,89807 with violation of assumption. And the ANFIS model produces RMSE 14832 and AIC 22,0777. This shows that ARIMA-ANFIS hybrid method is better than ARIMA and ANFIS.Keywords: production of red onion, ARIMA, ANFIS, hybrid ARIMA-ANFIS

Resumen
Ethambutol [(S,S')-2,2'-(ethylenediimino)di-1-butanol; EMB], is a first-line drug used to treat tuberculosis. To gain insight into the molecular basis of EMB resistance, we characterized the 10-kb embCAB locus in 16 EMB-resistant and 3 EMB-susceptible genetically distinct Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains from diverse localities by automated DNA sequencing and single-stranded conformation polymorphism analysis. All 19 organisms had virtually identical sequences for the entire 10-kb region. Eight EMB-resistant organisms had mutations located in codon 306 of embB that resulted in the replacement of the wild-type Met residue with Ile or Val. Automated sequence analysis of the 5' region (1,892 bp) of embB in an additional 69 EMB-resistant and 30 EMB-susceptible M. tuberculosis isolates from diverse geographic localities and representing 70 distinct IS6110 fingerprints confirmed the unique association of substitutions in amino acid residue 306 of EmbB with EMB resistance. Six other embB nucleotide substitutions resulting in four amino acid replacements were uniquely found in resistant strains. Sixty-nine percent of epidemiologically unassociated EMB-resistant organisms had an amino acid substitution not found in susceptible strains, and most (89%) replacements occurred at amino acid residue 306 of EmbB. For strains with the Met306Leu or Met306Val replacements EMB MICs were generally higher (40 microg/ml) than those for organisms with Met306Ile substitutions (20 microg/ml). The data are consistent with the idea that amino acid substitutions in EmbB alter the drug-protein interaction and thereby cause EMB resistance.

The oversulphated galactosaminoglycans synthesized by rat mucosal mast cells were isolated from the small intestine of animals infected with the nematode Nippostrongylus brasiliensis, which causes proliferation of these cells. The 35S-labelled polysaccharides were degraded by digestion with chondroitinase ABC, and the structures of the disaccharide products were determined by cleavage with mercuric acetate followed by electrophoretic characterization of the resultant sulphated monosaccharides. It was concluded that about half of the disulphated disaccharide units in the polysaccharide consisted of chondroitin sulphate E-type structures [GlcA-GalNAc(4,6-di-OSO3)], in which both sulphate groups were located on the N-acetylgalactosamine unit. The remainder consisted of isomeric structures with one sulphate group on the N-acetylgalactosamine residue and one on the hexuronic acid unit and presumably represented the dermatan sulphate-type sequence [IdoA(2-OSO3)-GalNAc(4-OSO3)].

Resumen
Abstract. In time series data that has a fairly high volatility, it is possible to have an error variance that is not constant (Heteroscedasticity). This is reflected in the square of error that also follows the time series model, for example the autoregressive (AR) model and the expectation of the conditional error square is not constant, the AR model of the square of error is called the Autoregressive Conditional Heteroscedastic (ARCH). The AR model that combines time series data and squared error is called Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroscedastic (GARCH). However, the GARCH model ignores the asymmetric effect on the data. So Nelson (1991) developed the GARCH model to overcome the asymmetric problem with the Exponential GARCH model. The purpose of this study was to determine the symptoms of the EGARCH model and apply the EGARCH model in stock price index data at PT. Bank X in Indonesia. The data used is closing price data for the period January 2019 – December 2021. The results show that the Residual from GARCH(2.0) is used to test the effect of asymmetry. The best model used for forecasting based on the comparison results of MAPE, AIC and SIC values from several other models is the EGARCH(2,1) model.

The host transmembrane protein SERINC5 is incorporated into retrovirus particles and inhibits HIV-1 infectivity. The lentiviral Nef protein counteracts SERINC5 by downregulating it from the cell surface and preventing its incorporation into virions. The ability of Nef to antagonize the host factor varies in magnitude between different HIV-1 isolates. After having identified a subtype H nef allele unable to promote HIV-1 infectivity in the presence of SERINC5, we investigated the molecular determinants responsible for the defective counteraction of the host factor. Chimeric molecules with a subtype C Nef highly active against SERINC5 were constructed to locate Nef residues crucial for the activity against SERINC5. An Asn at the base of the C-terminal loop of the defective nef allele was found in place of a highly conserved acidic residue (D/E 150). The conversion of Asn to Asp restored the ability of the defective Nef to downregulate SERINC5 and promote HIV-1 infectivity. The substitution was also found to be crucial for the ability of Nef to downregulate CD4, but not for Nef activities that do not rely on the internalization of receptors from the cell surface, suggesting a general implication in promoting clathrin-mediated endocytosis. Accordingly, bimolecular fluorescence complementation revealed that the conserved acidic residue contributes to the recruitment of AP2 by Nef. Altogether, our results confirm that Nef downregulates SERINC5 and CD4 by engaging a similar machinery and indicates that, in addition to the di-leucine motif, other residues in the C-terminal flexible loop are important for the ability of the protein to sustain clathrin-mediated endocytosis.

Crop wastes could be applied in conjunction with synthetic fertilizers to satisfy crop nutritional needs and enhance soil fertility. A field experiment was carried out during winter 2019–2020 at the AMK Research Farm (Palatoo) Mardan, KPK (Pakistan) to investigate the combined effect of phosphorous (PS) and organic sources (OSs) on wheat productivity under different irrigation regimes. The experimental factors were: two irrigation regimes (limited and full irrigation), three inorganic sources of phosphorus (triple super phosphate (TSP), single super phosphate (SSP) and di-ammonium phosphate (DAP)) applied at 90 kg ha−1, and three organic amendments (farmyard manure (FYM), mung bean residue (MBR), and canola residue (CR)) applied at a rate of 10 t ha−1. A control plot (no phosphorus or organic supply) was included. A randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications was adopted. Among the fertilization strategies, SSP + FYM outperformed all other P fertilizers combined with legume or nonlegume residues in terms of grains per spike−1 (52), thousand-grain weight (41.6 g), biological yield (9.7 t ha−1), and grain yield (4 t ha−1). Under full irrigation, improved yield, yield components, and profits were obtained compared to the limited irrigation regime. Three clusters were obtained after applying an Agglomerative Hierarchical Clustering (AHC), and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) conferred the positive effects of inorganic P with FYM on the wheat yield and its related parameters. This study indicated that the productivity of wheat under the SSP + FYM fertilization strategy was found to be more economical with respect to the benefit–cost ratio (BCR). The combined application of SSP + FYM was more profitable in terms of a higher BCR (3.25) than other treatments under the full irrigation regime.

Resumen
ABSTRACT Despite research into the nutritional requirements of Helicobacter pylori, little is known regarding its use of complex substrates, such as peptides. Analysis of genome sequences revealed putative ABC-type transporter genes for dipeptide (dppABCDF) and oligopeptide (oppABCD) transport. Genes from each system were PCR amplified, cloned, and disrupted by cassette insertion either individually (dppA, dppB, dppC, oppA, oppB, and oppC) or to create double mutants (dppA oppA, dppB oppB, dppB dppC, and oppB oppC). Peptide-utilizing abilities of the strains were assessed by monitoring growth in a chemically defined medium where the only source of the essential amino acid isoleucine was from peptides of various lengths (two to nine amino acids long). The dipeptide system mutants lacked the ability to use certain dipeptides, hexapeptides, and nonapeptides. However, these mutants retained some ability to grow with other dipeptides, tripeptides, and tetrapeptides. Of the oligopeptide mutants, only the oppB strain differed significantly from the wild type. This strain showed a wild-type phenotype for growth with longer peptides (hexa- and nonapeptides) while having a decreased ability to utilize di-, tri-, and tetrapeptides. The dppA oppA and dppB oppB mutants showed similar phenotypes to those of the dppA and dppB mutants, respectively. Peptide digestion by metalloproteases was ruled out as the cause for residual peptide transport by growing mutant strains in the presence of either EDTA or EGTA. Degradation products associated with a fluorescein isothiocyanate-labeled hexapeptide (plus cells) were minimal. An as yet unidentified peptide transport system(s) in H. pylori is proposed to be responsible for the residual transport.

Resumen
Abstract Introduction Adipsic diabetes insipidus (ADI) is a rare hypothalamic disorder consisting of central diabetes insipidus (CDI) and loss of thirst. In hyperosmolar state, signals from osmosensors integrate in the central thirst center resulting in stimulatory signals between subfornical-oragan, organum-vasculosm of lamina terminalis and median preoptic nucleus increasing thirst and release of vasopressin. Disruption in this mechanism leads to adipsia. Case presentation 27 yr old male with history of prediabetes, 4.6cm third ventricular epidermoid cyst s/p endoscopic ventriculosmoy, hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, central hypothyroidism, and CDI underwent right frontal craniotomy for residual third ventricular cyst. Developed worsening DI, new onset hyperglycemia, and secondary adrenal insufficiency. Discharged with oral DDAVP 300mcg oral twice daily for CDI. 1 week later presented to ED with weakness. BP 132/112, HR 139, RR 38, SPO2 94%. Labs significant for corrected sodium of 172 (136-145mmol/L), glucose 699 (70-99mg/dl), calcium 11.8 (8.3-10.6 mg/dl). Discharged after 3 weeks with intranasal DDAVP 10mcg twice daily (BID). Again presented 1 week after for weakness. Vitals BP 105/64, HR 134, F 37.3 C, RR 31, SPO2 96%. Corrected sodium of 174 (136-145mmol/L) and glucose 708 (70-99mg/dl). Denied missing medication. Reported no increased water intake. Patient was diagnosed with adipsic DI based on subjective lack of thirst during period of significant hyperosmolar hypernatremia state. Overtime switched to 10mcg BID intranasal DDAVP and started on 4L fixed water intake. Had 5L urine output daily. Sodium levels ranged from 132-137. Discharged on intranasal DDAVP 10mcg AM/20mcg PM, 4L daily fixed water intake, and twice weekly sodium checks as outpatient. Goal sodium 135-140. DDAVP adjusted after sodium rose to 145. At recent clinic visit continued fixed 4L fluid intake with extra 500-1L intake for increased sweating/exercise, and sodium level 134. A1c 10% on insulin, and weight gain of 70lbs since surgery (8mon piror), BMI of 45. Started on GLP-1RA and sleep study. Learning points: Less than 100 cases of ADI reported worldwide and associated with increased morbidity/mortality1. This patient likely developed ADI due to disruption of central thirst center from epidermoid cyst and trans frontal craniotomy. We must be hypervigilant for ADI in patients with third ventricular tumors who undergo frontal craniotomy. Management is complex and requires patients are followed closely with weekly labs, either fixed water intake or fixed DDAVP dose and adjustment depending on labs. Important to screen these patients for obesity and sleep apnea given increased likelihood of hypothalamic dysfunction1. Reference: Cuesta, M., Hannon, M. J. & Thompson, C. J. Resumen
This paper developed and evaluated the performance of the current functional tree taper and volume models. The models were applied to some selected economically important natural tree species common to central Sudan, namely, Combretum hartmannianum and, Lonchocarpus Laxiflorus. The tree variables measured were the diameter at breast height (DBH, cm), diameter at the base of the tree (d0, cm), upper stem diameters (di), total tree height (H), and height to the base of the crown (Hb). In total, 19 taper and 32 volume models were tested and evaluated (22 models were two-variable models (Diameter at breast height and total tree height or bole height) and 10 were three-variable models (Diameter at ground level, Diameter at breast height and total tree height or bole height). The model goodness of fit was evaluated in terms of adjusted coefficient of determination (Ra2), standard error (SE), mean absolute residual (MAR), bias (BI) Akaike’s information criterion (AIC), homogeneity of the residuals and significance of the regression parameters. As far as taper models is concerned, Models, some of the models were found to yield satisfactory results for the tow selected species with R2 range of 0.94 – 0.96. For the within species variation of models on the basis of the AIC values, the ranking of the models (smaller AIC first) were in consistant with the rankings due to SE and Ra2 values although AIC penalizes models in proportion to the number regression parameters. In general the results of the study indicated that higher residuals valuse are in most of the cases associated with the lower parts of the bole, the butress portion of the stem. This suggests that care should be taken during the application of such models for hardwood species, especially in open woodlands where butress is a common characteristic. The results for volume models revealed differences in the behaviour of different models for each species as the degree of significance of the regression parameters varies between tree species. However, the replacement of the total tree height by the bole height (merchantable height) improves both the level of parameter significance and the coefficient of determination. The results also reveal that inclusion of diameter at grown level to the original two variables (DBH, Ht) and the replacement of the original model total height with the bale height results in quite significant improvement of the Ra2 values. In general, the study concluded that taper and volume models can provide precise and accurate estimation of tree growth variables for the studied species with reasonable cost and time, but care should be taken when dealing with same model for the same species across varying growth and management condition, or when dealing with different species. country.

Resumen
The paper evaluated the performance of the current functional tree taper and volume models. The models were applied to some selected economically important natural Terminalia tree species common to central Sudan, namely, Terminalia laxiflora and, Terminalia brownii. 22 two-variable models (Diameter at breast height and total tree height or bole height) and 10 three-variables models (Diameter at ground level, Diameter at breast height and total tree height or bole height) were evaluated. The tree variables measured were the diameter at breast height (DBH, cm), diameter at the base of the tree (d0, cm), upper stem diameters (di), total tree height (H), and height to the base of the crown (Hb). Data were extracted from a natural reserved forest in the Blue Nile state. The models goodness of fit were evaluated in terms of adjusted coefficient of determination (Ra2), standard error (SE), mean absolute residual (MAR), bias (BI) Akaike’s information criterion (AIC), homogeneity of the residuals and significance of the regression parameters. Taper-17 and Taper-19 were found to be among the best two models for the two species with R2 range of 0.94 – 0.93, but with different rankings for each species. Comparison of the range of data for the tow studied species suggested that representation of various diameter at breast height (DBH, cm), diameter at the base of the tree (d0, cm), upper stem diameters (di), total tree height (H), and height to the base of the crown (Hb), had significant influence on the accuracy of prediction outside the range of the fitted data. This implies that application of the selected models is only useful at local stand level or at best in similar biological and stand structure conditions. For volume models, The results indicated that individual equations act differently in each species as there were great variations in the values of the same parameter of a given model accross the species. Some regression parameters of a given model were found to be significant in some species and insignificant in others. Comparison between the two versions of each group reveals that the replacement of the total tree height by the bole height (merchantable height) improves both the level of parameter significance and the coefficient of determination. From the first, the regression parameters of only 5 models (VOL-1, VOL-5, VOL-8, VOL-17, and VOL-20) were found to be significant at 0.05 probability level for all the tow species. The results also reveal that inclusion of variable D0 to the original two variables (DBH, Ht) to the volume equations results in insignificant improvement of the Ra2 values, while the replacement of the original model Ht variable with the Hb results in quite significant improvement of the Ra2 values. However, substantial improvement of the Ra2 values were obtained when both D0 and Hb were added. For this group of models, VOL-23, VOL-25- VOL-29 VOL30- and VOL-31were found to be the best for almost all the tow species. In general, the study concluded that taper and volume models can provide precise and accurate tree growth variables for the studied species with reasonable cost and time, but care should be taken when dealing with same model for the same species across the varying growth and management condition.

ReferênciasEmami E, Souza RF, Kabawat M, Feine JS. Resumen
“The cop in our head represses us better than any police force. Through generations of conditioning, the system has created people who have a very hard time coming together to create resistance.” – Seth Tobocman, War in the Neighborhood (1999) Even when creators of autobiographically-based comics claim to depict real events, their works nonetheless inspire confrontations as a result of ideological contestations which position them, on the one hand, as popular culture, and, on the other hand, as potentially subversive material for adults. In Seth Tobocman’s War in the Neighborhood (1999), the street politics in which Tobocman took part extends the graphic novel narrative to address personal experiences as seen through a social lens both political and fragmented by the politics of relationships. Unlike Art Spiegelman’s Maus (1986, 1991), War in the Neighborhood is situated locally and with broader frames of reference, but, like Maus, resonates globally across cultures. Because Tobocman figures the street as the primary site of struggle, John Street’s historiographically-oriented paper, “Political Culture – From Civic Culture to Mass Culture”, presents a framework for understanding not that symbols determine action, any more than material or other objective conditions do, but rather that there is a constant process of interpretation and reinterpretation which is important to the way actors view their predicament and formulate their intentions. (107-108) Though Street’s main focus is on the politicization of choices involving institutional structures, his observation offers a useful context to examining Tobocman’s memoir of protest in New York City. Tobocman’s identity as an artist, however, leads him to caution his readers: Yes, it [War in the Neighborhood] is based on real situations and events, just as a landscape by Van Gogh may be based on a real landscape. But we would not hire Van Gogh as a surveyor on the basis of those paintings. (From the “Disclaimer” on the copyright page.) This speaks to the reality that all art, no matter how innocuously expressed, reflect interpretations refracted from the artists’ angles. It also calls attention to the individual artist’s intent. For Tobocman, “I ask that these stories be judged not on how accurately they depict particular events, but on what they contain of the human spirit” (from the “Disclaimer” on the copyright page). War in the Neighborhood, drawn in what appears to be pencil and marker, alternates primarily between solidly-inked black generic shapes placed against predominantly white backgrounds (chapters 1-3, 5, 7-9, and 11) and depth-focused drawing-quality images framed against mostly black backgrounds (chapters 4 and 6); chapter 10 represents an anomaly because it features typewritten text and photographs that reify the legitimacy of the events portrayed even when “intended to be a work of art” (from the “Disclaimer” on the copyright page). According to Luc Sante’s “Introduction”, “the high-contrast images here are descended from the graphic vocabulary of Masereel and Lynn Ward, an efficient and effective means of representing the war of body and soul” (n.p.). This is especially evident in the last page of War in the Neighborhood, where Tobocman bleeds himself through four panels, the left side of his body dressed in skin with black spaces for bone and the right side of his body skeletonized against his black frame (panels 5-6: 328). For Tobocman, “the war of body and soul” reifies the struggle against the state, through which its representatives define people as capital rather than as members of a social contract. Before the second chapter, however, Tobocman introduces New York squatter, philosopher and teacher Raphael Bueno’s tepee-embedded white-texted poem, “‘Nine-Tenths of the Law’” (29). Bueno’s words eloquently express the heart behind War in the Neighborhood, but could easily be dismissed because they take up only one page. The poem’s position is significant, however. It reflects the struggles between agency and class, between power and oppression, and between capitalism and egalitarianism. Tobocman includes a similar white-texted tepee in Chapter 4, though the words are not justified and the spacing between the words and the edges of the tepee are larger. In this chapter, Tobocman focuses on the increasing media attention given to the Thompson Square Park homeless, who first organize as “the Homeless Clients Advisory Board” (panel 7: 86). The white-texted tepee reads: They [Tent City members] got along well with the Chinese students, participated in free China rallys, learned to say ‘Down with Deng Xiao ping’ in Chinese. It was becoming clear to Tent City that their homelessness meant some thing on a world stage. (panel 6: 103) The OED Online cites 1973 as the first use of gentrification, which appeared in “Times 26 Sept. 19/3.” It also lists uses in 1977, 1982 and 1985. While the examples provided point to business-specific interests associated with gentrification, it is now defined as “the process by which an (urban) area is rendered middle-class.” While gentrification, thus, infers the displacement of minority members for the benefits of white privilege, it is also complicated by issues of eminent domain. For the disenfranchised who lack access to TV, radio and other venues of public expression (i.e., billboards), “taking it to the streets” means trafficking ideas, grievances and/or evangelisms. In places like NYC, the nexus for civic engagement is the street. The main thrust of Tobocman’s War in the Neighborhood, however, centers on the relationships between (1) the squatters, against whom Reagan-era economics destabilized, (2) the police, whose roles changed as local policies shifted to accommodate urban planning, (3) the politicians, who “began to campaign to destroy innercity neighborhoods” (20), and (4) the media, which served elitist interests. By chapter 3, Tobocman intrudes himself into the narrative to personalize the story of squatters and their resistance of an agenda that worked to exclude them. In chapter 4, he intersects the interests of squatters with the homeless. With chapter 5, Tobocman, already involved, becomes a squatter, too; however, he also maintains his apartment, making him both an insider and an outsider. The meta-discourses include feminism, sexism and racism, entwined concepts usually expressed in opposition. Fran is a feminist who demands not only equality for women, but also respect. Most of the men share traditional values of manhood. Racism, while recognized at a societal level, creeps into the choices concerning the dismissal or acceptance of blacks and whites at ABC House on 13th Street, where Tobocman resided. As if speaking to an interviewer, a black woman explains, as a white male, his humanity had a full range of expression. But to be a black person and still having that full range of expression, you were punished for it. ... It was very clear that there were two ways of handling people who were brought to the building. (full-page panel: 259) Above the right side of her head is a yin yang symbol, whose pattern contrasts with the woman’s face, which also shows shading on the right side. The yin yang represents equanimity between two seemingly opposing forces, yet they cannot exist without the other; it means harmony, but also relation. This suggests balance, as well as a shared resistance for which both sides of the yin yang maintain their identities while assuming community within the other. However, as Luc Sante explains in his “Introduction” to War in the Neighborhood, the word “community” gets thrown around with such abandon these days it’s difficult to remember that it has ever meant anything other than a cluster of lobbyists. ... A community is in actuality a bunch of people whose intimate lives rub against one another’s on a daily basis, who possess a common purpose not unmarred by conflict of all sizes, who are thus forced to negotiate their way across every substantial decision. (n.p., italics added) The homeless organized among themselves to secure spaces like Tent House. The anarchists lobbied the law to protect their squats. The residents of ABC House created rules to govern their behaviors toward each other. In all these cases, they eventually found dissent among themselves. Turning to a sequence on the mayoral transition from Koch to Dinkins, Tobocman likens “this inauguration day” as a wedding “to join this man: David Dinkins…”, “with the governmental, business and real estate interests of New York City” (panel 1: 215). Similarly, ABC House, borrowing from the previous, tried to join with the homeless, squatters and activist organizations, but, as many lobbyists vying for the same privilege, contestations within and outside ABC splintered the goal of unification. Yet the street remains the focal point of War in the Neighborhood. Here, protests and confrontations with the police, who acted as intermediary agents for the politicians, make the L.E.S. (Lower East Side) a site of struggle where ordinary activities lead to war. Though the word war might otherwise seem like an exaggeration, Tobocman’s inclusion of a rarely seen masked figure says otherwise. This “t-shirt”-hooded (panel 1: 132) wo/man, one of “the gargoyles, the defenders of the buildings” (panel 3: 132), first appears in panel 3 on page 81 as part of this sequence: 319 E. 8th Street is now a vacant lot. (panel 12: 80) 319 taught the squatters to lock their doors, (panel 1: 81) always keep a fire extinguisher handy, (panel 2: 81) to stay up nights watching for the arsonist. (panel 3: 81) Never to trust courts cops, politicians (panel 4: 81) Recognize a state of war! (panel 5: 81) He or she reappears again on pages 132 and 325. In Fernando Calzadilla’s “Performing the Political: Encapuchados in Venezuela”, the same masked figures can be seen in the photographs included with his article. “Encapuchados,” translates Calzadilla, “means ‘hooded ones,’ so named because of the way the demonstrators wrap their T-shirts around their faces so only their eyes show, making it impossible for authorities to identify them” (105). While the Encapuchados are not the only group to dress as such, Tobocman’s reference to that style of dress in War in the Neighborhood points to the dynamics of transculturation and the influence of student movements on the local scene. Student movements, too, have traditionally used the street to challenge authority and to disrupt its market economy. More important, as Di Wang argues in his book Street Culture in Chengdu: Public Space, Urban Commoners, and Local Politics, 1870-1930, in the process of social transformation, street culture was not only the basis for commoners’ shared identity but also a weapon through which they simultaneously resisted the invasion of elite culture and adapted to its new social, economic, and political structures. (247) While focusing on the “transformation that resulted in the reconstruction of urban public space, re-creation of people’s public roles, and re-definition of the relationship among ordinary people, local elites and the state” (2), Wang looks at street culture much more broadly than Tobocman. Though Wang also connects the 1911 Revolution as a response to ethnic divisions, he examines in greater detail the everyday conflicts concerning local identities, prostitutes in a period marked by increasing feminisms, beggars who organized for services and food, and the role of tea houses as loci of contested meanings. Political organization, too, assumes a key role in his text. Similarly to Wang, what Tobocman addresses in War in the Neighborhood is the voice of the subaltern, whose street culture is marked by both social and economic dimensions. Like the poor in New York City, the squatters in Iran, according to Asef Bayat in his article “Un-Civil Society: The Politics of the ‘Informal People’”, “between 1976 and the early 1990s” (53) “got together and demanded electricity and running water: when they were refused or encountered delays, they resorted to do-it-yourself mechanisms of acquiring them illegally” (54). The men and women in Tobocman’s War in the Neighborhood, in contrast, faced barricaded lines of policemen on the streets, who struggled to keep them from getting into their squats, and also resorted to drastic measures to keep their buildings from being destroyed after the court system failed them. Should one question the events in Tobocman’s comics, however, he or she would need to go no further than Hans Pruijt’s article, “Is the Institutionalization of Urban Movements Inevitable? A Comparison of the Opportunities for Sustained Squatting in New York City and Amsterdam”: In the history of organized squatting on the Lower East Side, squatters of nine buildings or clusters of buildings took action to avert threat of eviction. Some of the tactics in the repertoire were: Legal action; Street protest or lock-down action targeting a (non-profit) property developer; Disruption of meetings; Non-violent resistance (e.g. placing oneself in the way of a demolition ball, lining up in front of the building); Fortification of the building(s); Building barricades in the street; Throwing substances at policemen approaching the building; Re-squatting the building after eviction. (149) The last chapter in Tobocman’s War in the Neighborhood, chapter 11: “Conclusion,” not only plays on the yin and yang concept with “War in the Neighborhood” in large print spanning two panels, with “War in the” in white text against a black background and “Neighborhood” in black text against a white background (panels 3-4: 322), but it also shows concretely how our wars against each other break us apart rather than allow us to move forward to share in the social contract. The street, thus, assumes a meta-narrative of its own: as a symbol of the pathways that can lead us in many directions, but through which we as “the people united” (full-page panel: 28) can forge a common path so that all of us benefit, not just the elites. Beyond that, Tobocman’s graphic novel travels through a world of activism and around the encounters of dramas between people with different goals and relationships to themselves. Part autobiography, part documentary and part commentary, his graphic novel collection of his comics takes the streets and turns them into a site for struggle and dislocation to ask at the end, “How else could we come to know each other?” (panel 6: 328). Tobocman also shapes responses to the text that mirror the travesty of protest, which brings discord to a world that still privileges order over chaos. Through this reconceptualization of a past that still lingers in the present, War in the Neighborhood demands a response from those who would choose “to take up the struggle against oppression” (panel 3: 328). In our turn, we need to recognize that the divisions between us are shards of the same glass.
