Resumen
Current residential building designs have become very close and confined. This confinement has made the house lacking in the feeling of open space and the gradual transition from the outdoor to the indoor spaces. These units lack to ventilation, natural lighting, and the connection with the natural environments. In this study, a non-conventional design of the residential building is introduced. This design has revealed the elements of the ideal that is missing in the typical residential buildings today.

Resumen
Thesis (Ph. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Economics, 2008.

Many ethnically diverse countries have policies that encourage integration across ethnic groups. This dissertation investigates the impact and welfare implications of a residential desegregation policy in Singapore, the ethnic housing quotas. I employ both reduced form and structural form methods. In Chapter 1, I use regression discontinuity analysis to estimate the impact of the quota on prices, quantity and quality of units sold. Because an individual's decision on where to locate affects ethnic distributions in aggregate, these externalities suggest that any decentralized equilibrium may not be optimal. To find the first best, just using housing prices is not sufficient because prices do not internalize the externalities. We need to know the shapes of household's preferences. In chapter 2, I use a structural demand estimation framework to estimate taste for living with own ethnic group neighbors. Finally, using these preference estimates, I simulate the first best equilibrium and compare it to the existing equilibrium with quotas.I find that all quotas have significant negative impact on the proportion of units sold at the quota cutoffs. Malay-constrained units are 5% cheaper perhaps because the units sold are also of lower quality. The impact on the price and quality of Chinese- and Indian-constrained units are opposite. Chinese-constrained units are 7% more expensive even though the units sold are of significantly worse quality. Indian-constrained units are 2% cheaper even though the units sold are of a higher quality.
(cont.) Using the structural estimation framework in Chapter 2, I find that all groups have strong preferences to live with at least some other members of their ethnic group. However, the shapes of preferences differ significantly across groups. The majority (the Chinese) exhibit preferences that are inverted U-shaped so that after a neighborhood reaches 43% Chinese, they would rather add a new neighbor from the other group. I find similar evidence for the Indians but not for the Malays. My simulations show that the first best has fewer Chinese- and Indian-segregated neighborhoods but more Malay-segregated neighborhoods compared to the existing equilibrium with the quotas. Comparing data from 3 segregated towns before the quota, I find that after 10 years since the introduction of the quota, the decentralized equilibrium had moved the Malay and Indian proportions significantly closer to first best.

Resumen
A remote residential control system enables home users to remotely manage devices at their homes. These devices may include energy management, security surveillance, household appliances, consumer electronics, etc. This system involves technologies in home automation, home networking, and interfacing a home network with external networks. However, lacking a single standard poses a big challenge to the design of such a system. This thesis proposed three methods of turning an IP Set-Top Box into a remote residential control platform. Additionally, future trends are discussed. Various technologies in the fields mentioned above are also examined.

Massive migration is one the most significant phenomena of China's urbanization. In the thirty years since the "Reform and Open Up" policy began, Guangzhou has experienced economic growth and urban expansion and attracted a vast number of migrants. Seen as the product of the rapid urbanization, urban villages accommodate the majority of migrants by providing low-rent housing, but at the same time cause many social problems. This thesis aim at improving the migrants' standard of living, helping them gradually integrate into the city, and enhancing the potential for social interactions in the neighborhood.

Resumen
It is not uncommon to install private water filters in Malaysia, to rid the water of heavy metal contaminants, chlorine and bacteria. The main objective of this study was to redesign the base structure of a commercially available water filter (by Blöndal Water Group) in order to allow for an automated backwashing and rinsing function of the filter. Additional focus was laid on creating an energy efficient mechanism for compatibility with different power sources, including solar energy. The study consists of two parts, firstly a literature study of selected relevant areas necessary to understand the product, the water filter industry and the solar photovoltaic market and secondly a conceptual development where material has been created to support the decision-making for continued research and development of the product.  In order to allow for an energy efficient construction, the focus was laid on changing the shaft from a push- and pull motion into a rotational movement, controlling the direction of the water flow. The shaft was redesigned to accommodate for the rotational movement and was divided into three parts, each third corresponding to 120 degrees of rotation. Once the details of the redesigned shaft and base structure were in place, the power source to supply the rotational mechanism with electricity was investigated and found out to ideally be from a simple stand-alone battery. The idea of using solar panels was not recommended, mainly due to the added complexity to the product and due to the fact that the energy required is considered low, even for a very small 10W solar panel. As for future research and development of the product, it was recommended to look into what kind of power mechanism were to be used, and rotary solenoids and stepper motors were introduced in the study as examples to look deeper into.

Gutting, Daniel. "Residential histories of Munich's Turkish population : a biographical approach to urban residential mobility". Thesis, University of Sheffield, 1997. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/15078/.

Texto completo
Resumen
This thesis examines the residential histories of Munich's Turkish population and evaluates the application of a biographical approach to the explanation of residential mobility. The analysis focuses on three different, but complementary, levels of analysis. The first examines the changing aggregate patterns of residential location and migration of Munich's Turkish population in the 1980s and 1990s. Secondly, the analysis turns from the crosssectional to the longitudinal and examines the residential histories of a cohort of 72 respondents. Thirdly, and moving further from the aggregate to the individual, the study explains residential histories by incorporating people's experiences, and evaluates the usefulness of a biographical explanation of residential mobility, based within a theoretical framework connecting identity and action. The research adopts a 'mixed methods' approach combining qualitative and quantitative methods to address the three levels of analysis effectively. Analysis of population and housing data from the census examines aggregate patterns of location and migration for Munich's Turks. The results of a questionnaire survey outline movement through space and through the housing market for one particular cohort. Finally, in-depth biographical interviews examine people's residential histories in more detail by incorporating their experiences, focusing both on primary immigrants and their children joining them in Germany later (secondary immigrants). The in-depth part of the study also provides the opportunity of outlining and evaluating a biographical approach to urban residential mobility. The research shows that, for both primary and secondary immigrants, residence has a significance that makes housing a crucial issue, important for feeling at home in Germany. Finding adequate places to live, however, has always been difficult for Munich's Turks as a result of their inferior position in the housing market. As a consequence, this population has undergone a marked sequence of movement through housing sectors, that has also resulted in processes of deconcentration and selective suburbanisation. These spatial patterns have not been the result of choice by the people concerned but are determined significantly by the structure and mechanisms of the housing market in Munich. At the level of migration theory, the research demonstrates that action (movement) and non-action (non-movement) are significantly located in people's biographies. Thereby, it is also shown that placing a biographical approach within a theoretical framework connecting action, narrative and identity is one way of addressing the demands of overcoming the structure/agency dualism, and contextualising migration and non-migration more fully.

Resumen
Urban planners have long advocated strategies that enable a broad spectrum of the population to live in their preferred communities. In particular, planning researchers emphasize the importance of enabling households with preferences for Smart Growth communities to match. Living in Smart Growth communities – characterized by higher densities, more mixed land uses, and better access to transport alternatives to the car - has been empirically linked with improved health, environmental and economic outcomes. One widely cited neighbourhood matching strategy is to increase the level of housing mix - or the diversity and distribution of different housing typologies within a neighbourhood - to permit households of lesser financial means to trade living space for an opportunity to live in their desired communities. However, no empirical study has investigated whether increased neighbourhood housing mix is associated with higher levels of neighbourhood matching in the population. The purpose of this dissertation is to evaluate the effectiveness of housing mix as a planning strategy. Using data obtained from a residential preference survey of 1,186 Vancouver area households, this project investigates the association between neighbourhood housing mix and the ability for households to match into their preferred neighbourhood type. The project also tests the association between neighbourhood match and neighbourhood satisfaction as well as the association between neighbourhood match and two measures of health: self-reported health status and body mass index (BMI). Neighbourhood match is defined two ways: based on a survey respondent’s subjective interpretation of their actual neighbourhood design compared to their preferences (i.e. “subjective match), and a comparison of the respondent’s survey-indicated preference versus an objective assessment of their community based on measurable features of the built environment (i.e. “objective match”). Findings reveal that housing mix only significantly predicts objective match, and significant associations are limited to owner-occupiers and respondents under the age of 60. Objective match is not a significant predictor of neighbourhood satisfaction or health. This dissertation concludes that housing mix is not an effective planning strategy for enabling households with Smart Growth preferences to live in their desired community.

Resumen
Throughout relevant literature and through the discourses attached to it outdoor education is often described in terms of its purposes. Among other things it is often said to be education out of doors, personal and social education, or education about self, others and the environment. While this reflects concerns among practitioners it has led to a relative scarcity of critical reviews of the field’s practice. The research reported in this thesis brings a new perspective to the study of outdoor education. A Practice Model is proposed from research that takes a social constructionist epistemology and an interpretive perspective in a study of outdoor education. Using ideas of a community of practice the research examined the literature and interviewed outdoor education practitioners in residential outdoor centres. The residential context served to provide access to discrete communities of practice in outdoor centres and to focus the research on general outdoor adventure education. Through this an understanding of the practice of outdoor education was developed. Three dimensions of outdoor education practice were identified as ‘adventure’, ‘learning from experience’ and ‘new space’. These three dimensions of the Practice Model are proposed as a tool for analysis and critique of current practice and for re-thinking and developing practice.

Resumen
The city of Melbourne in Victoria, Australia has been recognised as having high quality drinking water, but like other urban cities in the world, its growing population means increasing water demand. Melbourne is also already on its eight year of dry climatic conditions and is currently experiencing a drought that forced water authorities to impose water restrictions after 20 years of unrestricted supply. The current drought, dwindling supplies and possible impact of climate change highlight the importance of making better use of this precious resource. The Water Resources Strategy has been developed for Melbourne, which serve as the basis for the Victorian Government to set per capita consumption reduction targets of 15%, 25% and 30% by 2010, 2015 and 2020 respectively. The strategy was developed to ensure a continuation of a safe, reliable and cost effective water supply that is environmentally sustainable in the long term. This is in recognition that population growth and water consumption will eventually require additional supplies of water (Water Resources Strategy Committee for the Melbourne Area 2002). One of the key findings of the National Land and Water Resources Audit's Australian Water Resources Assessment 2000 is the lack of detailed knowledge about the end use (Australian Water Association 2001). Resumen
In the late 1800’s and early 1900’s lead and zinc mining became prominent in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Missouri. With no knowledge of the effects that would impact the future, the mining companies continued to strip the land. With the discovery of lead and zinc ores in southeast Kansas, southwest Missouri, northeast Oklahoma in the late 1800’s a way to process the ores in a cheap way was needed. Natural gas in locations like Iola Kansas helped led to cheap ore processing and smelting. After the cheap fuel for the processing began to diminish in the early 1900’s, the multitude of smelters began to decrease. With the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency in 1970, concerns for the environment became a more than ever important issue. In the 1990’s, the EPA began to collect environmental impact data from areas potentially affected by mining, to access the effects of lead mining on residential areas in southeast Kansas and southwest Missouri. Thus, the methods of residential lead sampling were created. In Iola, Kansas the Kansas Department of Health and Environment performed tests to measure the extent that environmental impact from the smelters had on human residents of the town. With this evidence, the EPA was asked to conduct more testing, and to perform a cleanup of residential sites to help protect the environment and human health.

Resumen
Internet based services have become an important part of our lives, and broadband access has reached the commodity phase in most developed countries. A growing portion of the time spent on-line among younger Internet users are related to social media and entertainment services. This evolution is not possible or even desirable to reverse, but for certain user groups it is clear that some level of control and restrictions are required. There are many examples of children which are addicted to "being online" while their parents do not even know about the situation. There are many solutions for parental control in the market today which address this problem, but they are all either very easy to bypass or too difficult to understand and use for e.g. parents. The children are in many cases smarter than their parents when it comes to Internet. The scope of this project is to make a prototype of an Internet Control solution for Residential Users based on the Raspberry PI model B HW and Linux OS, or an alternative platform if found appropriate. The solution should be controlled from a central server, and the administration interfaces offered to system administrators should come from here. Candidate interfaces are app?s for iphone and/or Android, SMS control and regular web interfaces. The development is expected to require programming in Java and HTML, and a selection of whatever scripting tools/languages appropriate on the development platform. Knowledge about Linux, iOS and Android are beneficial.

Resumen
Identifying with the emerging school of environmental criminology, this research focuses on the place of crime, aiming to explore and understand spatial variations in vulnerability. Residential crime (crime against the household) is studied - specifically residential burglary, burglary in other premises and simple theft. Analysis of data collected from police crime records supports the assumption that most residential crime is opportunistic - committed in areas familiar to the offender. Analysis is primarily made at inter- and intra-neighbourhood levels. Eight neighbourhoods of contrasting socio-economic characteristics and crime levels within, and in surrounding areas of, Swansea are studied - using a questionnaire (to interview samples of households) and a site survey (to record design and location features of dwellings). Two (related) themes structure the research. (i) Place as location. Hypotheses are tested which explain the vulnerability of neighbourhoods, in terms of variables which may either create or foreclose opportunities for crime (namely neighbourhood identity, social cohesion, variability, occupance levels, dwelling design and location). It is concluded that these need to be applied selectively as explanations of vulnerability - the most general explanation is proximity to offender-residence. The importance of place-specific studies is emphasised. (ii) Place as a centre of meaning. The second set of hypotheses concentrate on reaction to crime - in terms of relations between perceptions of crime, satisfaction with the neighbourhood, perceived risk of, and worry about, being burgled and security consciousness. All the hypothesised relationships were found to exist, to varying degrees. The implications of these results are discussed with reference to a range of crime prevention measures which have the objective of reducing or removing opportunities for crime. Some recommendations on ways in which the public can be made better informed on the real risks of crime are made.

Resumen
Master of Science
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering
Anil Pahwa
Understanding electricity consumer behavior at different times of the year and throughout the day is very import for utilities. Though electricity consumers pay a fixed predetermined amount of money for using electric energy, the market wholesale prices vary hourly during the day. This analysis is intended to see overall behavior of consumers in different seasons of the year and compare them with the market wholesale prices. Specifically, coincidence of peaks in the loads with peak of market wholesale price is analyzed. This analysis used data from 101 homes in Austin, TX, which are gathered and stored by Pecan Street Inc. These data were used to first determine the average seasonal load profiles of all houses. Secondly, the houses were categorized into three clusters based on similarities in the load profiles using k-means clustering method. Finally, the average seasonal profiles of each cluster with the wholesale market prices which was taken from Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) were compared. The data obtained for the houses were in 15-min intervals so they were first changed to average hourly profiles. All the data were then used to determine average seasonal profiles for each house in each season (winter, spring, summer and fall). We decided to set three levels of clusters). All houses were then categorized into one of these three clusters using k-means clustering. Similarly electricity prices taken from ERCOT, which were also on 15-min basis, were changed to hourly averages and then to seasonal averages. Through clustering analysis we found that a low percent of the consumers did not change their pattern of electricity usage while the majority of the users changed their electricity usage pattern once from one season to another. This change in usage patterns mostly depends on level of income, type of heating and cooling systems used, and other electric appliances used. Comparing the ERCOT prices with the average seasonal electricity profiles of each cluster we found that winter and spring seasons are critical for utilities and the ERCOT price peaks in the morning while the peak loads occur in the evening. In summer and fall, on the other hand, ERCOT price and load demand peak at almost the same time with one or two hour difference. This analysis can help utilities and other authorities make better electricity usage policies so they could shift some of the load from the time of peak to other times.

Resumen
This degree project looks at the effective methods and principles in planning and design for regenerating public space, especially regenerating public space in residential areas. This regeneration of public space is important, as a way to solve problem of unattractiveness, lack of social interaction and insecurity feeling among people or inhabitants in public spaces in residential areas. In this project, we choose Oxhagen housing area in Kalmar, as the project object. In which, the projects aim to change the Oxhagen from unattractive place to an attractive place which enhance people to have positive social interactions among inhabitants.   Firstly, this project begun by collecting the relevant study and theory regarding public space, especially in residential areas. From there, we based this project with proper guidelines and planning principles. Furthermore, to thoroughly consider all practical aspects, this project also studied successful public spaces in residential areas in Scandinavia countries, therefore, the project can learn from the successful projects. The second and third part, the project provides information of the context of the area and situational analyses of the site, Oxhagen in Kalmar. The last important part of this project, we provide the proposal of public space in residential area, Oxhagen. The project based the proposal on the relevant theories and the situational analysis. The proposal are consists of detail plans and other planning suggestions. In the proposal, we focus the planning and design with the concept of accessibility, enclosure, and diversity of activities, as we think these three concepts are the most applicable to the context of Oxhagen. Therefore, the suggestions and proposal are from these three concepts.

Resumen
The narrative literature review presented in Chapter One explores the concept of independence referred to within western ageing policies, and argues that this concept is often poorly defined. It is argued that negative perceptions of ageing and dependency have influenced the western ideals of promoting independence among older people. The potential negative impact of striving for independence is explored, including the possibility of older adults denying increasing support needs due to fear of appearing dependent on others. The implications of continuing to promote an unrealistic and marginalising goal of independence are discussed. The research paper presented in Chapter Two provides a narrative exploration of older people's experiences of moving into residential care. This transition has often been considered to be a major, and potentially stressful life event requiring substantial adjustment, however little research has been conducted exploring the lived experience of this move, and how it is incorporated into residents' lives. Eight residents participated in individual interviews, and discussed this transition in relation to their lives. Narrative analysis exploring convergent and divergent themes across participant's stories revealed major plots of control, uncertainty and identity. These plots occurred throughout all eight narratives, and appeared to be important in influencing older people's perceptions of residential care; more so than their duration of residence. This suggests that considering the transition into residential care as a phase and time based event does not encapsulate older people's experiences; the clinical implications of this are discussed.

Resumen
Government initiatives over the last fifteen years have emphasised a need to promote high standards within residential care for people with intellectual disabilities (ID). Emphasis has been placed on ensuring a competent workforce so as to promote high-quality support and prevent abuse. Clinical psychologists provide consultation and training to staff teams and have an important role to play in the care of people with ID. Despite the focus on competence, residential staff continue to have few qualifications and training opportunities. They are also poorly paid, which suggests that they are not valued as highly as other professions, despite doing a very demanding job. These issues pose the question of what has changed since government papers of the last decade and what issues remain. A literature review was completed to explore staff practice and factors that help and hinder competent working. Studies showed that staff faced daily dilemmas between policy and practice and that support from psychologists could be experienced as unhelpful. In order to ensure high-quality care for people with ID, it is essential that practice is informed by appropriate policy and theory. Since research was grounded in adult services, the empirical study sought to explore these issues further in a sample of ten staff members working with children with ID. Using semi-structured interviews and template analysis, the study aimed to identify whether or not these staff members experienced the same challenges with policy and theory and what support they wanted. It was found that very similar challenges were experienced when working with children. Participants provided further insight into these challenges and the support they needed. Findings are discussed in the context of how psychologists and policy-makers can be more useful. Following this, a reflective commentary is presented, offering reflections on the research process.

Resumen
The first major work to analyze the dimensions of segregation, done in the late 1980s by Massey and Denton, found five dimensions which explained the phenomenon of segregation. Since the original work was done in 1988 it seems relevant to revisit the issue with new data. Massey and Denton used the technique of factor analysis to identify the latent structure underlying the phenomenon. In this research their methodology is applied to a more complete data set from the 1980 Census to confirm their results and extend the methodology. Due to problems identified during the analysis confirmation was not possible. However, a simpler structure was identified which is comprised of only two factors. This structure is replicated when the methodology is applied to the 1990 and 2000 Census data thereby proving the robustness of the methodology.

Resumen
Residential change is a pervasive condition of North American society. In a lifetime, a person may go through many decisive and interrelated changes in occupational status, family situation and dwelling-place. This research tests the relationships among three major processes: residential mobility, social mobility, and family formation in Montreal between 1861 and 1901. Using sample households from three cultural communities: French Canadian, Irish Catholic, and British Protestants, it was determined that the majority of households were highly mobile, yet remained within a compact geographical area. Mobility is seen as a response to a changing set of needs and opportunities, and families facilitated adjustment through extensive networks of kinship and neighbouring.
Studies of present-day household mobility provide a well-developed set of theories, on which several hypotheses were based. Multivariate regression analysis was performed using the binomial logit model to assess the relative effects of ethnicity, tenure, occupational status, age, household size, marital status and rent, on rates of household persistence.
