Resumen
While societies necessarily have stakes in their own perpetuation, the extent to which their female members have managed to control their bodily integrity and reproduction has varied throughout history. This chapter discusses the circumstances under which women have succeeded in retaining authority over their bodily integrity and reproduction, and when this control has been conceptualized as a “right.” It offers an analysis of the impact of official population policies, biopower, biopolitics, and neoliberalism in enabling or deterring women from exercising reproductive autonomy. The chapter also reflects upon global challenges to reproductive autonomy and asks whether the more comprehensive notion of reproductive justice provides a superior framework to that of a rights-based paradigm for understanding the broad range of threats to women’s reproductive freedom today.

Resumen
Computing pioneer and polymath John von Neumann introduced the concept of a Universal Constructor as part of his effort to develop a mathematical theory describing living organisms. A Universal Constructor is a kinematic machine able to manipulate and assemble primitive building blocks. Von Neumann showed how this hypothetical constructor, being itself composed of the same primitive blocks, could self-reproduce and evolve. Remarkably, although this model system pre-dates the discovery of the genetic code, it applies to cell molecular biology as well as man-made machines. This chapter describes some key laboratory demonstrations related to universal construction and machine self-reproduction, and discusses parallels between reproduction processes in machines and biological cells.

Resumen
Interspecific fish reproductive patterns, outputs and life cycles display the greatest variability within the vertebrates. Early stages of oogenesis can be repeated in adult fish, contrasting with mammals; the pre-set sequence of cell divisions in gametogenesis is otherwise similar and is described in detail. Most fish deposit much yolk (vitellogenesis) in developing eggs. Migrations, beach-spawning and mouth-brooding are some of the interesting variations. Fertilization is predominantly external but is internal in some groups such as chondrichthyans. The omission of annual reproduction is well established in some freshwater species and the idea that this may also be the case for marine teleosts is gaining acceptance. This should be taken into account for intensively fished species. The possible roles of external cues, hormones, pheromones and neural factors acting as ‘switches’ and coordinators in gametogenesis and reproductive behaviour are discussed.
