"Environmental information : A study of environmental disclosure in financial analyst reports, annual reports, CSR reports and environmental risk profiles". Thesis, Umeå University, Umeå School of Business, 2008. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:umu:diva-24589.
Texto completoThe awareness of environmental issues has increased among the public the last decades. An environmental movement is occurring and companies are beginning to adapt themselves and their business activities to the changing view of environmental issues. Greater attention are turning to companies around the world due to the view that they have a responsibility concerning environmental and sustainability matters in their business operations. The development of environmental guidelines such as the Global Reporting Initiative and the presenting of separate Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) reports illustrate the emerged demand of an environmental awareness from various stakeholders. Government regulations and inter-continental agreements of carbon taxes, emission trade rights and various environmental targets are influencing the operations and the environmental approach for the companies.
An important link in the information chain is the financial analysts and their role as information intermediaries. The characteristics of their profession combined with their expertise knowledge of evaluating companies are reasons behind their function in the investment value chain. Traditionally, the valuation of companies has been based on financial figures and the models derive from typical tangible assets such growth numbers, estimated future earnings and cash flow. Environmental issues have throughout the years been considered of secondary importance due to the specific kind of information it represents.
This study examines factors influencing the amount of environmental information presented in financial analyst reports. The amount of environmental information presented in annual reports, CSR reports and an environmental risk profile developed by GES Investment Services have been selected as predictor variables to determine the amount of environmental information in the financial analysts’ reports.
40 companies from the industrial sector have been included in the study and the results reveal that no or very little environmental information can be found in the financial analyst reports. The financial analysts’ seem to prioritize other kinds of information when evaluating companies and creating analyst reports. The study also reveals that companies with separate CSR reports seem to have a higher amount of environmental information presented in annual reports as well as a better environmental risk profile.

Texto completobodies, and narrative free text reports describing the findings in these visualizations are written by medical doctors. The information within these narrative reports is required to be extracted for medical information systems. Turkish is an highly agglutinative language and this poses problems in information retrieval and extraction from Turkish free texts. In this thesis one rule-based and one data-driven alternate methods for information retrieval and structured information extraction from Turkish radiology reports are presented. Contrary to previous studies in medical NLP systems, both of these methods do not utilize any medical lexicon or ontology. Information extraction is performed on the level of extracting medically related phrases from the sentence. The aim is to measure baseline performance Turkish language can provide for medical information extraction and retrieval, in isolation of other factors.

Hero Reports extends the rationale of New York City's "See Something, Say Something" campaign-an alert public can be a good security measure. The current political climate within the United States translates the MTA's tactics into ones of fear. Instead of fostering collective security, these calls for vigilance create rifts between people and communities. An unhealthy impact of the "See Something, Say Something" campaign encourages people to look at each other with heightened and prejudicial suspicion. Although other projects have sought to interrogate the tactics of such citizen-detective campaigns, they do not provide productive alternatives. Because of this, projects seeking to deflect fear, only serve to reify and preserve its power. An alternative technology is needed to effectively destabilize the message of fear inherent in the MTA campaign. Hero Reports counterbalances the vigilance associated with suspicion and Othering with measures of positive and contextual alertness. It is a technology that builds communities that are truly, and collectively, empowering. Hero Reports provides this alternative first by aggregating stories of everyday heroism, and then by thematically, geographically and temporally mapping them. By linking and contextualizing discrete moments of heroism, Hero Reports promotes a public discourse about how we create, enforce and value social norms. Balancing the empirical ways we measure crime, Hero Reports provides the groundwork for determining the empirical parameters for heroism.

Texto completoIncludes bibliographical references (p. 38-39).
The task of gathering detailed patient information from narrative clinical text presents a significant barrier to clinical research. A prototype information extraction system was developed to extract pre-specified findings from narrative echocardiogram reports. The system which uses a Unified Medical Language System compatible architecture is very simple and takes advantage of canonical language use patterns to identify sentence templates with which concepts and their values can be identified. The data extracted from this system will be used to enrich an existing database used by clinical researchers in a large university healthcare system to identify potential research candidates fulfilling clinical inclusion criteria. The system was developed and evaluated using ten pre-determined clinical concepts. Concept-value pairs extracted by the system related to these ten conditions were compared with findings extracted manually by the author. The system was able to recall 78% of the relevant findings (CI, 76% to 80%), with a precision of 99% (CI, 98%-99%). Because data acquired from the system will ultimately be used in document and patient retrieval, preliminary analysis was done to evaluate document retrieval effectiveness. Median recall across the ten conditions was 36% (range, 0% to 93%). The system retrieved no documents for two of the ten conditions; median precision for the remaining eight conditions was 100% (range, 92% to 100%).

Wiklund, Daniel, Samuel Sölgén y Oskar Olsson. "Swedish Companies´ Perception of Quarterly Reports". Thesis, Mälardalen University, School of Sustainable Development of Society and Technology, 2008. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:mdh:diva-749.
Texto completoAim of the Thesis: To investigate from a company’s perspective if the pressure for companies to produce quarterly reports has turned away their attention from working towards long-term value creation. The companies investigated are listed on the large-cap section on the Swedish stock exchange (OMX Nordic Exchange Stockholm AB).
Methodology: A quantitative approach has been used and empirical data has been collected through questionnaires. The data has been analyzed and presented with descriptive statistics.
Theoretical Perspectives: A literature review has been conducted and resulted in a theoretical framework illustrating the concepts of quarterly reporting, long-term value creating, short-termism and forecasting.
Empirical data: The empirical data was collected by distributing questionnaires to the companies listed on the large-cap section of the OMX.
Conclusion: Companies listed on the large cap section of the OMX do not perceive that the pressure to produce quarterly reports affects them in a negative way. The study also showed that many companies lack awareness of the risks associated with short-termism.

Texto completoThe operational units at the Exploration and Production (E and P) area at PETROBRAS make use of daily reports to register situations and events from their Stationary Production Units (SPUs), the well-known petroleum production platforms. One of these reports, called SITOP (the Portuguese acronym for Offshore Unities Operational Situation), is a daily document in free text format that presents numerical information and, mainly, textual information about operational situation of offshore units. The textual section, although unstructured, stores a valuable database with historical events in the production environment, such as: valve breakages, failures in processing equipment, beginning and end of maintenance activities, actions executed, responsibilities, etc. The value of these data is high, as well as the costs of searching relevant information, consuming many hours of attention from technicians and engineers to read the large number of documents. The goal of this dissertation is to develop a model of natural language processing to recognize named entities and extract relations among them, described formally as a domain ontology applied to events in offshore oil and gas processing units. After all, there will be a method for automatic structuring of the information from these operational reports. Our results show that this methodology is useful in SITOP s case, also indicating some possible enhancements. Relation extraction showed better results than named entity recognition, what can be explained by the difference in the amount of classes in these tasks. We also verified that the increase in the amount of data was one of the most important factors for the improvement in learning and methodology efficiency as a whole.
