<em><span lang="EN-US">Language is very important, especially seen from the function of culture and social functions in addition to other functions. It is very important for a country to have a national language which functions as a unifying tool for various ethnic groups with different backgrounds. Likewise, the function of regional languages is very important for the survival of a particular regional culture. Regional languages as one of the nation's wealth have a function as a means of communication for the supporting community. Apart from being a means of intra-ethnic communication, regional languages also function as supporters of the national language, namely Indonesian. On the basis of this function, regional languages should continue to be fostered and developed in order to strengthen the resilience of the nation's culture. Regional languages should no longer be treated as one of the cultures whose functions can be replaced by the functions of other languages. Article 36 of the 1945 Constitution states, among other things, that regional languagesthat are well maintained by their speakers will be respected and preserved by the state because these regional languages are part of the living Indonesian culture. The National Language Policy formulates that in relation to the development of state life in Indonesia towards regional autonomy and the importance of fostering and preserving regional culture, regional languagesneed to be given the widest opportunity to play a bigger role. Strengthening the existence and continuity of regional languages aims to protect regional languages which are one of the nation's wealth. Indonesian <em><span lang="EN-US">as a dynamic language can take advantage of local language vocabulary as an enrichment of Indonesian vocabulary. This attitude not only strengthens regional culture, but also strengthens national culture.</span></em></span></em>

This paper is motivated by the existence of an imbalance in the understanding of the Sundanese students of the Indonesian Language Education Study Program FKIP UNPAS in understanding statements or expressions that use regional languages. In contrast to their speed at understanding statements expressed in a foreign language, or Indonesian. In addition, in everyday life there are still many people who cannot speak the local language, and even seem afraid to use it. Moreover, with the increasing number of foreign terms used in daily activities, as well as the intensity of globalized communication, it is increasingly adding to the scarcity of the use of the regional language. Of course this is very ironic, because many people, including students, do not understand their own regional language, while foreign languages ​​or other second languages ​​are very quickly understood. The low interest of local language students, as well as the existence of different thoughts and treatments on the use of regional languages, as well as the lack of student understanding of regional languages ​​and cultures encourage writers to find a solution by utilizing existing conditions through learning local languages ​​based on local wisdom by utilizing audio-visual media. . Therefore, the authors feel the need to improve their abilities and attitudes, especially the students towards their own regional language. In order to improve students' ability to understand the local language, the author tries to provide a learning of regional language skills by raising the culture or habits according to local wisdom in their respective regions.The study was conducted in the learning of regional languages ​​with the aim of increasing the willingness and ability of students to preserve regional languages ​​and cultures. The research method that the author uses is to use the experimental method. This method is used to test the effectiveness of using Audio-Visual Media in learning local languages ​​by raising local wisdom. The research technique that the author uses is a test and questionnaire technique. The test is used to measure regional language skills productively (speaking and writing) by utilizing audio-visual media. While the questionnaire was used to determine the responses and attitudes of students towards learning and efforts to preserve local languages. By creating a creative and innovative learning, this research tries to provide a solution to answer the existing demands and needs. The results of this study are expected to be an effort in the preservation of regional languages, especially for students as the most important part in agents of change in the preservation of the regional language. With the packaging of regional language learning that elevates local wisdom through audio-visual media, it is hoped that students' love for the language and culture of their own region will be embedded. and international. For this reason, the author feels it is important to conduct this research as an effort to preserve the local language. In the local context, the language and culture of the region or elements of locality are always in an important position capable of binding their primordialism, bothinspirit, behavior, social networks, choice of political attitudes, and identity. The dynamics of language and cultural development (local, tribes, and ethnic )are very prominent in their diversity and have strong potential in order to develop and strengthen the unity and unity of the citizens of the Republic of Indonesia. The presence of external factors affects the power of acceptance and self-adjustment to language and culture that comes from outside. Inabsorbing culture and accepting external influences at least results in the occurrence of two aspects:first, outside influences enrich cultural capital and regional languages; and secondly, it can also happen that the opposite is precisely the outside influences that come to reduce, evenpotentially eliminate the existence of regional cultures and languages.

Abstract This paper addressed the question how the use of Dutch and the regional languages Frisian or Limburgish differ on Twitter and which patterns in language choice can be identified. Previous quantitative studies (Jongbloed-Faber, Van de Velde, Van der Meer & Klinkenberg, 2016; Nguyen, Trieschnigg & Cornips, 2015; Trieschnigg, 2015) have already shown that people in the Dutch provinces of Friesland and Limburg tweet in Frisian or Limburgish respectively, but most often in Dutch interspersed with some English. In this qualitative study, we compared the tweets from twenty twitterers in Friesland and Limburg who use both Dutch and Frisian or Limburgish regularly in order to get insight into their language use patterns. The following patterns in language use were identified: when a twitterer aims to maximise his/her audience, Dutch is regularly employed. However, as soon as an interpersonal, addressed tweet is formulated, Frisian or Limburgish is often used. General tweets in Dutch may therefore very well get a Frisian or Limburgish continuation. Another mechanism frequently found in responding tweets is following the language used in the original tweet, notwithstanding such a tweet was in Dutch or in a regional language. Finally, the data show that, although Twitter is a global medium which can be accessed at any time and any place provided that one has access to the needed technical equipment and Internet connection, twitterers sometimes construct localness i.e. what is perceived as local culture through using Frisian or Limburgish exclusively.

Pakistan’s multilingual linguistic diversity is shaped by its colonial past and post-independence history. After gaining independence, Pakistan's major languages were Urdu, English, Punjabi, and Saraiki. However, multiple languages have posed challenges for multilingual writers. One of them is the lack of a standardized orthography for regional languages, making it difficult for writers to produce texts in their native languages. The prevalence of Urdu and English has resulted in a language hierarchy where these languages are seen as superior to regional languages. In the face of these challenges, the establishment of language authorities, such as the National Language Authority and the Punjab Institute of Language, Art and Culture, aim to promote and standardize regional languages. Efforts are being made towards the betterment of these writers. Promoting and standardizing regional languages and recognizing multilingualism as an asset can contribute to a more inclusive and representative society in Pakistan.

Tulisan ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui ragam bahasa daerah yang merujuk pada istilah dalam bahasa Indonesia dalam video “Tik Tok” serta peran media tersebut dalam memperkenalkan ragam Bahasa Daerah sebagai bentuk ekspresi budaya bangsa. Penelitian ini menggunakan perspektif dari new media untuk mendiskusikan persoalan tersebut. Metode penelitian menggunakan penelitian kualitatif. The source of the data obtained is from primary data in the form of a Tiktok video entitled: Compilation of regional languages. The data collection technique uses documentation techniques, namely identifying videos of various regional languages ​​in Tiktok. Data analysis technique using reduction technique. Hasil penelitian menunjukan ragam bahasa yang terdapat dalam video TikTok yang sudah dikumpulkan oleh peneliti, terdapat ragam bahasa dari Daerah Jawa, Sunda, Solo, Minang, Banyumas, dan Manado. Peran media sosial yaitu video tiktok terkait ragam bahasa atau penyebutan Bahasa Daerah dalam memperkenalkan budaya Bahasa Indonesia sehingga dapat menjadikan Bahasa Indonesia yang beragam menjadi populer, terwariskan atau ditirukan, dan diterima dilapisan masyarakat. Video tiktok sudah menjadikan budaya Indonesia yaitu Bahasa Indonesia menjadi populer diterima disetiap seluruh masyarakat baik negeri atau luar negeri. Efforts to be with culture must start from the local language where the cultural values ​​can be shared or communicated among community members. This paper aims to find out the variety of regional languages ​​that refer to the terms in Indonesian in the video "Tik Tok" and the role of the media in introducing various regional languages ​​as a form of national cultural expression. For these problems, this study uses the perspective of new media. The research method uses qualitative research. The results show the variety of languages ​​contained in the TikTok videos that have been collected by researchers, there are various languages ​​from the Java, Sundanese, Solo, Minang, Banyumas, and Manado regions. The role of social media is tiktok videos related to various languages ​​or the mention of regional languages ​​in introducing Indonesian culture so that they can make various Indonesian languages ​​popular, inherited or imitated, and accepted in society. Tiktok videos have made Indonesian culture, namely the Indonesian language, become popular which is accepted by all people, both country and abroad.

The article considers the toponyms of the Smolensk region as a valuable phenomenon of cultural and historical character, which, being the language of the earth, are able to tell about the ancient and most ancient facts of life of the people of this region on a par with the monuments of material culture. Names belonging to Finno-Ugric and Baltic languages, as well as to West Slavic languages are identified. It is emphasized that names can persist for centuries, losing their connection with the source language and adapting to new language conditions.

U.S. Marine Corps recently developed the Regional, Culture, and Language Familiarization Program (RCLF), which assigns newly promoted sergeants and commissioned officers to one of the 17 regions established by the RCLF office. As of now, there is no formal process established in assigning Marines to one of the 17 regions. The assignment is done manually and oftentimes, by random allocation without a standard operating procedure. We developed two integer-programming models and a matching algorithm that utilizes top trading cycle and serial dictatorship. These models optimize the assignment based on Marines and USMC preferences. We find that the benchmark integer programing model is the best in terms of assigning most Marines within their top four choices. Regardless, satisfaction rate of any of the three models are higher than the random assignment model.

This thesis explores the international Book Town Movement that, from its beginnings in the small Welsh market town of Hay-on-Wye in the early 1960s, has escalated to incorporate more than 50 villages and towns in 27 countries. This phenomenon has enabled peripheral communities in Europe and across the globe to reclaim their economic futures and impact on the cultural sphere as increasingly powerful sites and sources of creativity. This study seeks to understand the reasons for this renaissance of interest in the preservation of traditional print culture in the countryside at a point in history when the book publishing industry is in a state of flux as it adapts to new digital technologies and globalisation of markets, leading to a clarification of the relationship between new books and the second-hand book economy. At the centre of this investigation is an acknowledgement of the book as a unique item of cultural consumption and a catalyst in book town creation – at once a remarkable artefact and a springboard for contemporary cultural debate. Essential to an understanding of book towns is their location on the geographical periphery and their capacity to sustain regional culture and identity. This thesis analyses innovative book town examples from diverse parts of the world using four key research methods: site-based research, case study research, cultural policy research and book culture research. This research aims to inform a broader discussion of regional regeneration and cultural policy development through an investigation of book towns as ‘down on their luck’ places, reanimated to celebrate remarkable pasts and designed to captivate a growing middle-class cohort drawn to nostalgia, history, cultural heritage and tranquil rural settings that deliver both intellectual stimulation and wellbeing. The synergy of the book town ethos with a number of evolving global tourism trends – including cultural tourism and, more recently, post-tourism – has heightened their desirability. By exploring the history and origins of the Book Town Movement, the thesis links book towns to the entrepreneurship of bibliophiles seeking more utopian lifestyles, and culture-led regeneration by governments wanting to harness their capacity to increase social capital and generate economic revival.

This thesis reexamines the beginnings of Swedish hardboiled crime literature, in part tracking its lineage to American culture and unpacking Swedish identity. Following the introduction, the second chapter asserts how this genre began as a form of escapism, specifically in Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö’s Roseanna. The third chapter compares predecessor Raymond Chandler’s The Big Sleep with Roseanna, and how Sweden’s greater gender tolerance significantly outshining America’s is reflected in literature. The fourth chapter examines how Henning Mankell’s novels fail to fully accept Sweden’s complicity in neo-Nazism as an active component of Swedish identity. The final chapter reveals Helene Tursten’s Detective Inspector Huss engaging with gender and racial relations in unique ways, while also releasing the suppressive qualities found in the Swedish identity post-war. Therefore, this thesis will better contextualize the onset of the genre, and how its lineage reflects the fruits and the damages alike in the Swedish identity.

Este trabalho discute a cultura e a identidade roraimense e alguns desdobramentos, a partir do processo de hibridação representada na obra de arte do artista plástico, Jorge Augusto Cardoso. Para tanto, utilizamos fundamentos teórico-metodológicos oriundos dos Estudos Culturais para abarcar Cultura, Identidade, Linguagem Visual, Arte Regional, Regionalismo, Regionalidade, Hibridação e epresentação, visando analisar o processo de constituição identitária de Roraima, além de compreender seus elementos envolvidos neste processo, nos quais possibilitaram visualizar as formas de ser roraimense, revelados no cenário imagético do artista, permeados de diferenças e conflitos. Sob este prisma, diversas formas de representações simbólicas valorizadas no espaço regional, criadas pelo artista, foram estudadas, e novas concepções foram extraídas, ao mesmo tempo, gerando novas leituras. Dessa maneira, esta análise traz possibilidades de identidades desenvolvidas no sistema de representação contida na obra, na qual espaços foram criados e construídos, possibilitando aos sujeitos, posicionar-se e construir novas identidades; apropriar e reconstruir identidades para seu uso.
This paper discusses Roraima`s culture and identity and some developments from the hybridization process represented in the art work of the artist, Jorge Augusto Cardoso. For this purpose, we used theoretical and methodological foundations from Cultural Studies to cover Culture, Identity, Visual Language, Regional Art, Regionalism, Regionality, Hybridization and Representation in order to analyze the process of identity formation of Roraima, and to understand its elements involved in this process, which allowed us to view the forms of "being" Roraima, revealed in the artist imagery scenery, riddled by conflicts and differences. In this light, various forms of symbolic representations valued in the region, created by artist, were studied, and new concepts were extracted at the same time generating new readings. Thus, this analysis gives possibilities of identity developed in the system of representation contained in the work, in which spaces were designed and built, enabling subjects to position themselves and to build new identities; to appropriate and to reconstruct identities for their use.

A pesquisa sobre a função do rádio na preservação de uma língua teve por objetivo descobrir os motivos pelos quais milhares de pessoas sintonizam programas radiofônicos transmitidos em talian na Região da Serra Gaúcha. Para isso, levantaram-se dados relativos ao Programa Cancioníssima da Rádio São Francisco SAT de Caxias do Sul. Transmitido em talian, ele permanece na grade de programação da emissora desde 1984. Analisou-se, através de um questionário aplicado a 28 ouvintes, os principais pontos de audiência e aceitação do programa radiofônico que apresenta histórias, contos e músicas em talian. Buscou-se, ainda, a contextualização do talian em dois momentos: o primeiro, o das origens do talian e, o segundo, o dos atos de revitalização da língua registrados a partir das comemorações do Centenário da Imigração Italiana no Rio Grande do Sul. Verificou-se que o rádio tem importante contribuição diretamente ligada à preservação do talian na região da serra, principalmente como suporte de políticas de salvaguarda dessa língua, além de auxiliar como instrumento de resgate das tradições e costumes deixados pelos primeiros imigrantes que chegaram à região da serra gaúcha no final do século XIX.

The aim of this research on radio´s role in preserving a language is to discover why thousands of people still sintonize radio programmes transmitted in talian dialect in the Region of Serra Gaúcha, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. Data related to the radio programme called Cancioníssima San Francisco SAT from the city of Caxias do Sul was collected. This programme has been transmitted in talian since 1984 and discloses stories, tales and songs in this dialect. An oral interview was applied to 28 listeners in order to analyze the main points of audience and its acceptance. The project shows two different contextualizations which are: the origins of talian dialect and the acts of language revitalization registered after the celebration of the Centenary of the Italian Immigration in Rio Grande do Sul. The radio has an important contribution directly linked to the preservation of talian in the Region of Serra Gaúcha, mainly as a support to safeguard policies and as an instrument of redemption of the traditions and customs left by the first immigrants who came to the Region of Serra Gaúcha in the late 19th century.

Tandis que la Révolution française consacre l’État comme la structure par laquelle l’individu parvient à s’arracher des tutelles religieuse, politique et familiale, les adversaires de cet idéal trouvent en Corse à la fois un abri contre la modernité et le repère du monde nouveau incarné par un homme, Napoléon, qui a insufflé au monde « le mal insulaire de l’âme », soit l’esprit d’émancipation.Nous avons souhaité structurer cette idée en trois moments :1. Le moment révolutionnaire. Des Lumières corses à la Révolution française, il s’agissait d’analyser la façon dont les Corses voient leur révolution être progressivement reléguée en modèle contre-révolutionnaire.2. Le moment conservateur. How did Corsica come to be seen in French literature as the ideal setting for a critique of the Enlightenment and the Revolution? While the French Revolution consecrated the State as the structure through which the individual could free himself from religious, political and family control, the opponents of this ideal found in Corsica both a shelter from modernity and a reference point for the new world embodied by a man, Napoleon, who breathed into the world "the insular evil of the soul", in other words the spirit of emancipation.We wanted to structure this idea in three moments:1. The revolutionary moment. From the Corsican Enlightenment to the French Revolution, the aim was to analyse the way in which the Corsicans saw their revolution gradually being relegated to the status of a counter-revolutionary model.2. The conservative moment. Unable to put an end to post-revolutionary society, conservative authors saw modernity as a means of correcting the Corsican's evil customs, the vendetta, while at the same time expressing their concern at the idea of seeing the language, culture and rural society disappear as a result of Frenchisation.3. The reactionary moment. From counter-revolutionary literature to the literature of the Collaboration, the aim is to examine the way in which reactionary writers have changed the representation of the island. Initially considered as the domain of anarchy, which was able to impose its savage tyranny on France, Corsica came to be seen as the landmark of a people whose traditions and customs were opposed to republicanism

In the tradition of the Birmingham School of cultural studies, this thesis focuses on Miami’s graffiti subculture and the conflicts between market economies and economies of social meaning. As a reference point, I consider Miami’s “Penits”: the name given to the seemingly abandoned buildings where graffiti is performed. Short for penitentiary, the term derives from the 1980s after a large building rumored to be a prison was defunded midway through its construction. After this first reclamation, every other graffiti heterotopia in Miami has been similarly recoded as spaces that mock structures of discipline and industry. Through Michel Foucault’s biopolitical framework I argue that the sovereign state and marketplace conspire to dually criminalize and commoditize the subculture’s performative defiance. I conclude by illustrating how the market itself reinforces the carceral archipelago by framing the subculture’s vandal aesthetic through the normalized, self-interested boundaries of conduct that the market itself deems il/legal.

This thesis examines the processes of the formation and re-formation of folk cultures in north-eastern Scotland. Focusing on the area surrounding Aberdeen, I am interested in the historical and contemporary relationships between Highland and north-eastern versions of Scottishness. During the 1990's, a burgeoning north-eastern regional and cultural self-awareness, centred on the "Doric" dialect, was evidenced in the founding of the Elphinstone Research Institute at the University of Aberdeen, and in the founding of an annual Doric Festival. This institutionalisation has taken place in a situation in which Scottish national traditions have remained popular in the region and the Scottish nation has experienced a greater degree of political autonomy. The continued reproduction of both Scottishness and north-easternness is resultant of the ways in which culture and language have been mobilised, politicised and legitimised through the erection and operation of institutional frameworks. The role of expert and enthusiast knowledges in the propagation of cultural trends is analysed here through an exploration of the spectacularisation and banalisation of tradition. In particular, I unpack the tensions that claims for authenticity create with regard to the ballad and literary traditions of the north-east, and to the Highland Games and Gatherings of the same region. Exploring joint actions and knowledges, I demonstrate the efficacy of performative language and embodied practice in communicating, stabilising and normalising rhetorical ideas concerning Scottish cultures. As the contingent factors that give language and practice variable meanings become fixed through citation, the formation of dominant readings is enabled. The normalisation of spectacular events is crucial in the communication of authenticity and the establishment and recreation of national or regional identities. As perceived authenticity substitutes for objectivity in the popular imagination, everyday apprehensions of Scottishness and north- easternness are both made more durable and infused with a strong legitimacy by their very performance and naming.

This paper draws attention to a phenomenon at the intersection of pragmatics, discourse analysis and syntax known as tail-head linkage (THL) in Baïnounk Gubëeher and other West African languages spoken in Upper Guinea (Senegal, Guinea Bissau, Cabo Verde). THL is a discourse feature common in narratives and procedural texts, whereby phrases or parts of phrases are repeated in consecutive phrases to create discourse cohesion. Largely absent from European languages, THL is common in languages of Papua, Australia and the Amazon, but has not yet been described in depth for any African or so-called Creole languages. However, these structures are well attested in Atlantic languages spoken in the Casamance area and also in various of the regional Portuguese based Creoles. As these languages are not closely genetically related, THL is a good candidate for an areal feature. Drawing on a corpus of transcribed texts in Baïnounk Gubëeher and Joola Kujireray and Banjal as well as experimental data in those languages as well as four varieties of Upper Guinea Creoles (Santo Antão, São Vicente, Casamance, Bissau), the discursive function, frequency and the syntactic strategies for the use of these structures are described and compared.

In some early masoretic Bible codices, a large letter resembling nun or zayin occurs in the margin, often in conjunction with the marking of qere/ketiv. Occurring in some codices, but not in others, the letter represents a bit of a cipher. Drawing on a database of ca. 15,000 masora parva notes, taken from 81 different classmarks, I propose that the letter, possibly a zayin, had (or acquired) a practical purpose, viz. as a means of avoiding certain types of copyist mistakes when recording qere/ketiv notes. Because the sign occurs in certain script types more than others, I also show that the notation can function as something of a regional identifier.

AbstractEurope is a multilingual society with 24 European Union Member State languages and dozens of additional languages including regional and minority languages as well as languages spoken by immigrants, trade partners and tourists. While languages are an essential part of our cultural heritage, language barriers continue to be unbreachable in many situations. The only option to enable and to benefit from multilingualism is through Language Technologies (LTs) including Natural Language Processing (NLP), Natural Language Understanding (NLU) and Speech Technologies. The commercial European LT landscape is dominated by hundreds of SMEs that develop many different kinds of LTs. While the industrial and also the academic European LT community is world-class, it is also massively fragmented. This chapter is an introduction to the present volume, which describes the European Language Grid (ELG) cloud platform, initiative and EU project. The ELG system is targeted to evolve into the primary platform and marketplace for LT in Europe by providing one umbrella platform for the entire European LT community, including research and industry, enabling all stakeholders to showcase, share and distribute their services, tools, products, datasets and other resources. At the time of writing, the ELG platform provides access to more than 13,000 commercial and non-commercial language resources and technologies covering all official EU languages and many national, co-official, regional and minority languages.

This chapter provides an in-depth examination of the phonology of Jewish Gabes and its position within the spectrum of Tunisian Arabic dialects, with a particular focus on the Jewish ones. Notably, the study reveals substantial distinctions between the Muslim and Jewish dialects of Gabes, especially concerning the realisation of specific consonants and phonemic vowels. The Muslim variant aligns phonologically with Bedouin-type dialects, while the Jewish dialect displays characteristics typical of sedentary varieties, like the plosive realisation of interdentals and uvular realisation of /q/. The analysis includes a study the evolution of diphthongs in Jewish Gabes, illustrating the shifts from /ay/ to /ī/ and /aw/ to /ū/. A comparison is made with other Jewish dialects like Wad-Souf and Jewish Tunis. The discussion then turns to the development of sibilants and the retention of /h/ in Jewish Gabes, features that diverge from other regional dialects. Emphasis spread in Jewish Gabes is explored, revealing variations in the pharyngealised nature of /q/ and the spreadability of emphatic consonants. Finally, scrutiny of the vowel inventory shows that it contains three long phonemic vowels (/ī/, /ā/, /ū/) and three short phonemic vowels (/a/, /ə/, /o/), with nuances in the quality of /ə/ based on consonantal context.

AbstractSince 1913, when Greece significantly increased her territory, minority protection has come under the spotlight of international consideration and guarantees. During the past 110 years, language rights, among other minority rights, were either reluctantly granted or ignored. Although minority languages have been treated asymmetrically and incoherently, a particular pattern seems to have emerged: minority languages spoken by Christians (Vlach, Slavic languages, Arvanitika) are subject to assimilation dynamics, whereas minority languages spoken by non-Christians (Muslims, Jews) are governed by protection norms, with or without territorial criteria. This trend was shaped by international political influences and legal regulations through a very narrow perspective, which actually screened out any attempt at establishing non-territorial arrangements. Today, only one minority language enjoys special rights (mostly in the field of education), namely Turkish spoken by the Muslims of Thrace. Despite this, migratory flows after 1990, primarily from Albania, the former USSR and the Middle East, once again brought up the question of multiculturalism, language contact and language management. However, subsequent Greek governments have been reluctant to introduce special language rights for immigrants and refugees. Since Greece refrains from adhering to the main European legal instruments that safeguard language rights, such as the European Charter for Regional of Minority Languages or the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities, the single protective mechanism granting linguistic rights remains the Treaty of Lausanne, which is limited to a specific minority language within a specific region. The legal protection of linguistic otherness in Greece was and still is fragmented and ambivalent, ranging from non-territorial autonomy invisibility to strict institutional territoriality.

AbstractIn this chapter I explore the relationship between language and environment loss and the use of heritage languages in resistance related to the defense of natural resources. This link is shown by analyzing the case of Nahua and Tének communities of the Huasteca Potosina in northeastern Mexico, which between 2013 and 2018 were involved in a range of collective actions against the threat of fracking, a highly damaging method of gas and oil extraction. One particularly interesting aspect of these activities was the spontaneous use of the Indigenous languages Nahuatl and Tének in various anti-fracking activities. Against the backdrop of several centuries of gradual reduction of the vitality of the two languages, this new domain of their use is a surprising but very welcome development for language revitalization. Using insights from participant observation and interviews, I demonstrate that the motivation to use Indigenous languages was not only to facilitate communication, but also to strengthen the Indigenous regional identity as a tool for solidarity building and Indigenous resistance against damaging extraction projects. I also show that fracking is perceived as not only a threat to the environment but also to the native cultures of the region.

This chapter presents three audio texts in the Modern South Arabian language (MSAL) Śḥerɛ̄t (henceforth Shehret, a.k.a. Jibbāli) that deal with the use of indigenous flora for the building of houses for people and pens for livestock. The chapter begins with a brief background to the human–nature relationship in Dhofar, a brief description of the texts and the speakers and an outline of the phonemic inventory of Shehret. Section 2 describes the traditional use of plants as building materials. Section 3 presents the texts in Shehret, translated into English with annotations. This chapter contributes to the documentation and revitalisation of language and culture in Dhofar. We hope that the botanical and cultural information presented here will be of interest to ethnobotany in general, and contribute to sustaining traditional knowledge in the region.

Knowledge of self is at the core of all human endeavours. In the quest identity assumes significance. It acquired greater relevance and respect on account of Postcolonial concerns. ‘Class’ emerged as the basis of a person’s identity. Subsequent to liberation of colonies from alien rule, postcolonial concerns gained ground. Focus on indigenous ways of life adds new dimension. Social, cultural, psychological and economic structures became the basis of one’s own view of identity. These dynamics are applicable to languages that flourished, perished or are on the verge of extinction. In India, regional, linguistic, religious diversity add to the complexity of the issue in addition to several subcultures that exist. Culture is not an independent variable. Historical factors, political developments, geographical and climatic conditions along with economic policies followed do contribute to a larger extent in fixing the contours of a country’s culture. Institutional modifications also sway the stability of national culture. Cultural transmission takes place in diverse ways. It is not unidirectional and unilateral. In many countries culture models are passed on from one generation to another through recitation. The learners memorize the cultural expressions without understanding meaning or social significance of what is communicated to them. Naturally, this practice results in hierarchical patterns and hegemony of vested elements. This is how norms of ‘high’ and ‘low’ are formed and extended to written works and oral/folk literatures respectively. This presentation focuses on the identity, culture and language of indigenous people in Telugu speaking states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh in South India.

Resumen
The modern stage in the development of ethnomusicology is marked by the emergence of large-scale fundamental research. However, the problems of ethnomusicology are essentially not discussed in them, being peripheral for the authors. In this regard, it seems timely to analyze the refraction of ideas and methods of ethnomusicology in the research of scientists - representatives of various regional scientific centers and schools. The lack of interest in the study of modern processes and dynamics of culture is partly due to objective circumstances. Scientists do not always have collections of materials collected in previous periods of the development of science. However, it should be noted that such a trend is characteristic of ethnomusicology, while linguists, for example, are constantly studying and monitoring the transformation of the everyday, scientific language, studying the languages of corporate and information communities, new forms of written culture.

Resumen
In this blog, the authors focus on recent developments regarding Irish and Ulster-Scots in Northern Ireland. Beginning with the convening of a newly-devolved government in January 2024, they explore the impact of political instability on linguistic diversity in the region. Subsequently, initiatives such as the Identity and Language (Northern Ireland) Act 2022 and the proposed establishment of an Office of Identity and Cultural Expression are examined. The authors argue for the need to go beyond parallel structures which align languages with identity politics, whilst highlighting that political elites often fail to acknowledge those who engage with a language associated with another political tradition. A key aspect to the argument is the need for policy interventions which support the development of distinct types of dialogue about language and which have transformative potential.

Resumen
The current study is an attempt to provide a linguistic, a historical, as well as a sociocultural record of the language variety spoken in Bashiqa (Northern Iraq) by one of the communities which represents a religious minority in Iraq known as Yazidis. This language is an example of an under-researched language diversity. This research draws on a sample of eleven in-depth semi-structured interviews with Yezidi men and women from Bashiqa, Iraq. The analysis of these interviews has yielded a number of points which help in documenting and preserving this language variety. The study concludes that the language used in Bashiqa is an ancient hybrid regional dialect in which many values and meanings are embedded. In short, the Yazidis understand their language as a vehicle of their intangible cultural heritage.

In this blog piece Craig Willis investigates the contribution of European Structural and Investment Funds projects in the period between 2007-2013 and 2014-2020, in order to ascertain direct and indirect links to the four Celtic languages, following the separation of cultural funds from the ESIF into Creative Europe and Erasmus Plus from 2007. He shows that, given that the speakers of such languages often reside in economically peripheral areas (at least in higher percentage terms), their livelihoods and everyday culture in the traditional speaking areas (even for non-speakers) are affected by availability of structural funds.
