Texto completoCrop mixtures, including variety and species mixtures (or intercrops), are an effective crop diversification practice for managing pests and diseases. In recent years, we have seen an increase in the area cultivated with variety mixtures - particularly wheat - and species mixtures. However, some mixtures, such as cereal-legume intercrops, still account for only a small share of arable land in France. Indeed, technical, material, and economic barriers and the lack of knowledge and references hinder the adoption of crop mixtures by farmers. The aim of this thesis is to study crop mixtures under current agricultural conditions to produce references on their performance in terms of input use and production and to analyse the dynamics of adoption at farm and territorial levels. To this end, we used a mixed approach, combining analysis of databases and field surveys, and a multi-scale approach, linking the plot and the cropping system, the farm and the territory. Our results suggest that some mixtures are more effective than others in reducing chemical inputs and underline the importance of the choice of varieties and species in designing mixtures that meet farmers' objectives. Collective work, exchanges with peers and adapted support from advisory services can help to overcome several obstacles to the adoption of associated crops. On farms, the composition of intercrops and the areas allocated to them are likely to evolve, depending on the farmers' objectives and constraints, and outlets for the intercrops. As they gain experience, farmers refine their knowledge of the practice, which also helps them to develop their intercrops. These changes, along with peer-to-peer interactions, are responsible for the adoption dynamics observed at the territorial level. Finally, our study shows that even in particularly dynamic areas, difficulties remain and seem to lead to the abandonment of the practice after a few years of testing. These cases, therefore, need to be studied in greater detail to refine our understanding of the processes involved in adopting crop mixtures

Texto completoThe environmental damage caused by the intensive use of pesticides challenges the current production model in appellation wine growing. We mobilize here an evolutionary framework to understand the lack of change in vineyard phytosanitary protection despite increasing regulatory and social pressure in recent years. After analyzing grape growers’ pesticide lock-in, we consider new protection practices via the concept of environmental innovation. Our case analysis and evolutionary model allow us to show that IPM could significantly reduce pesticide use along win-win trajectories, but also that the lack of specific implementation know-how in farms hampers its adoption. We therefore highlight the importance of learning processes for pesticide reduction in grape growing. In the absence of formal R & D, growers need specialized advice and structured extension services to meet the challenge they face: producing profitable and environmentally friendly wines. Public policies can therefore be based on this result to drive the expected change in a reasonable time

Texto completoThe reduction of pesticide reliance in lettuce cropping systems is a short term objective sharedby public authorities and by the stakeholders of lettuce market. Reaching this goal implies thesubstitution of pesticides by others techniques which may limit pest and pathogen damage. Thesetechniques can be intended to mitigate pest and pathogen invasion or propagation, to increaseplant defenses or to remove pests and pathogens from the crop. The improvement of currentcropping systems relies on i) the demonstration of the ability of alternative techniques to managediseases and pests when they are combined and integrated during the crop cycle; ii) theassessment of the socio-economic and environmental impacts of alternative strategies in a stringentcommercial and regulatory context. The objective of this thesis was to design alternativestrategies for pest and pathogen management of lettuce grown in winter under shelter, with fewerpesticide applications, and to assess their agronomic, economic and environmental performancesso as to ensure the sustainability of production.Based on currently available techniques, two alternative strategies, called intermediate andlow-input, were designed, and tested in two farms and an INRA experimental station duringtwo winters and compared to a conventional strategy representing current practices. The alternativestrategies enabled to reduce pesticide applications by 32% and 48% respectively. Theywere efficient enough to obtain similar yield and quality as compared to the conventional strategy. The environmental benefits of their implementation were also demonstrated. However, thesestrategies required a 10-13% extra production costs, almost exclusively due to biological controlproducts. In parallel, two original technical orientations, which efficacy had not been previously described, were examined. In a first set of experiments, the impact of lettuce genotype and growthconditions on plant susceptibility to two major pathogens, Botrytis cinerea and Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, was investigated. The use of a genotype displaying low susceptibility to these fungi, associated with an optimization of the ratio of fructose : sucrose in plants, appeared to reducethe symptoms after inoculation. A second experimental approach, dealing with biological controlagainst the aphid Nasonovia ribisnigri, highlighted the inability of Aphidius parasitoids tocontrol aphid populations at the end of the crop cycle, when the canopy structure becomes toocomplex. In addition to a contribution to cropping systems improvement, the scientific method used, combining analytical and integrative approaches enabled us to highlight the effect of techniquesacting on several pests and/or pathogens, such as the reduction of nitrogen fertilization or theoptimization of plant spacing, which could improve the management of fungi causing basal rotas well as aphids

Texto completoThe adverse effects of pesticides on health and the environment are well known and different regulations aim at decreasing their use in the agricultural sector in France and Europe. However, this use does not decrease in practice. Agriculture is as of yet characterized in academic literature by a technological lock-in on an intensive use of pesticides. Analyses of technological lock-in have shown that one solution is to produce knowledge on alternative techniques. In this regard, agricultural advisory services have a key role. These services have, nonetheless, undergone profound organisational transformations in European countries, leading to a greater pluralism of agricultural service providers. This PhD research questions the performance of farm advisory services and their capacity to produce knowledge on alternative farming practices that does not require an intensive use of pesticides. This work is based on advances from institutional economics dealing with knowledge intensive business services (KIBS). It presents a conceptual and methodological framework developed to analyse the diversity of service suppliers, their partnerships and their conception of the performance of advisory services. The research draws on case studies in the French potato seed industry

Texto completoThe aim of this PhD is to generate knowledge and proposals for action to improve the State's management of agroecological transitions. To this end, we analyze the case of pesticide reduction policies in France : the Ecophyto plans. Launched in 2008, they aimed to reduce pesticide use by 50% by 2018, a target later extended to 2025. However, since their implementation, pesticide sales have not decreased in France, raising questions on how to rethink public policies to more efficiently reduce pesticide use. To answer to this question, we use the theory of sociotechnical system transitions, which highlights that reducing the use of chemical pesticides is hindered by lock-in mechanisms. To overcome this lock-in, the literature highlights the need to foster inter-organizational, multi-level and coordinated collective action dynamics. Therefore, we asked ourselves how to strengthen the State's management of collective action for pesticide reduction. Our analysis is structured in three parts. First, we examined Ecophyto policy processes at the national level, and identified several skills and resources lacking within the State administration to improve those processes. We then studied the implementation of three policy instruments designed to support the emergence of collective management of pesticide reduction, and proposed several ways to improve them. Based on these results, we sought to rethink public policies for pesticide reduction, using an innovative design approach. Through multi-stakeholder workshops, we co-designed three scenarios for transforming public policies to reduce pesticides, demonstrating the relevance of an innovative design approach for transition policy processes. Finally, we discuss the need for large-scale organizational change, both within the administration and agri-food organizations, to strengthen the State's management of pesticide reduction

Texto completoThe Ecophyto Plan imposes a 50% reduction of pesticides by 2025, generating a paradigm shift in crop protection. To ‘Produce differently’ reconciling techno-economic, environmental and social performances is an issue. Agricultural education plays a key role in training future farmers. Teaching-learning the construction of agro-ecological and socioeconomic reasoning favoring alternatives to pesticides, linked in sustainable development, contributes to prepare future farmers to develop agroecosystems using fewer pesticides. It is an agronomic socially acute question that involves emerging, distributed, plural and controversial knowledge, which supposes to consider the risk/uncertainties of the solutions and values of the actors. Our research crossing the didactic of socially acute questions and of agronomy provides a model for problem situation favoring the emergence of adequate reasoning and an analytical grid of the levels of complexity of the reasoning. These model and grid have been tested with pupils/students in two levels of vocational agricultural training (baccalaureat and post baccalaureat). The quali-quantitative analyzes show that pupils/students build Agro-socio and economic reasoning, that students are better equipped to design alternative than pupils at the “baccalauréat” level. By revealing supports and obstacles in teaching-learning to ‘produce differently’, the device is an educational tool for structuring the learning of pupils/students on the complexity of the issues, while expanding the scope of reference in knowledge
