Texto completoThis thesis is a study of injection of chemicals as an Enhanced Oil Recovery Method (CEOR) in reference to an extra-heavy oil reservoir case in Venezuela. Firstly, the polymer transport properties of concentrated polymer solutions have been investigated in porous media in monophasic conditions. This has involved: polymer dosage, rheological characterization and coreflood experiments that allowed quantifying the polymer retention, the mobility reduction effect including injectivity aspects. It has been observed that retention/adsorption increases with polymer concentration and that modeling based on depletion layers effects is an effective tool to interpret the mobility reduction values. Secondly, oil, brine and rock from a Venezuelan extra-heavy oil reservoir have been characterized and oil recovery tests in porous media have been carried out. These tests aimed at determining the ultimate residual oil saturation achievable by CEOR. Experimental results on both Bentheimer outcrops and reservoir rock have shown that surfactant-polymer (SP) flooding in secondary conditions is the most relevant process at core scale. SP flooding appears in particular more effective than sole polymer (P) and surfactant (S) flooding. Reduction of viscous instabilities, and hence improvement in mobility control after SP flooding, has been confirmed from CT-scanner analysis. The results obtained in this work at the laboratory scale, are aimed at being used as input data for simulating CEOR processes at the reservoir scale. This opens the way towards realistic economic assessments on CEOR for extra¬heavy oil in Venezuela and large scale field developments

Texto completoAmong all the Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) methods used to improve oil recovery, chemical methods require the use of complex fluids like polymers or surfactant solutions. Those fluids present particular chemical and mechanical properties allowing to modify viscosity and/or interfacial tension to increase oil recovery. However, polymer solutions show a high sensitivity to shear rates existing close to wells and may lose their mechanical properties when they are injected in a porous media. An alternative method could be to use self arrangement of surfactant molecules (wormlike micelles) to displace oil in porous media. These systems show not only a similar behaviour as polymers but also a low sensibility to temperature and shear rates. The goal of this experimental work is to study the flow of wormlike micelle solutions innatural porous media in order to determine its ability to flow and displace oil in place. Itconsists in a characterization at laboratoty scale. We will use natural porous media in orderto be close to a realistic situation. This study is divided in three parts:- A rheological characterization of the micellar system- A monophasic injection within the porous medium- A diphasic _ow study of oil displacementThe results of this work are compared to standard reference experiments using classicaltechniques such as ASP or polymer injection

Texto completoThis manuscript deals with the influence of synthetic surfactants added and the endogenous surfactants of crude oil on the optimum formulation obtainment in the field of enhanced oil recovery (EOR). The dynamic phase inversion of Surfactant/Crude oil/Brine emulsified systems at WOR=1 turns out to be a fast and efficient practical tool to assess the conditions to obtain WIII microemulsions which are specific of ultra-low interfacial tensions between crude oil and aqueous phases. This technique allows to study the crossed effects of temperature and salinity on petroleum formulations, and also to find the parameters to apply in order to reach the optimum formulations. The dynamic phase inversion has also be used to quantify the interfacial activity of crude oils through the EACN concept, as well as showing its limitations in the case of these complex oils. Furthermore, this dynamic method succeeds in characterizing the trade synthetic surfactants and the endogenous amphiphilic species of crude oils. To this end, the evolution of the salinity (SPI-Slope) or the temperature (PIT-Slope) phase inversion of the reference system C10E4/n-octane/NaClaq (fw=0,5) with the surfactant addition has allowed to schedule the first surfactant classification towards these two formulation variables. This manuscript presents also the extraction of endogenous surfactants of several crude oils by an optimal WIII microemulsion and their characterization according to high resolution mass spectrometry techniques. Finally, by exploiting the phase inversion data, different descriptors of surfactants and oils interfacial activities can be used to predict the optimum formulation conditions for EOR applications. The obtained descriptors are a starting point to simplify the choice of surfactants to use for a given crude oil at fixed temperature and salinity conditions

Texto completoSince 5 years, the autoemulsification of water in crude oils has been reported on several systems, and associated with improved oil recovery. We tried to understand what was its physicochemical origin. We found that when we put crude oil in contact with water, micro-droplets of water were formed in the oil for all the crude oils studied. We have shown that the phenomenon of spontaneous emulsification observed during the contact of crude oil with low salinity water is a double osmotic mechanism, governed by the double penetration of water and "osmogeneous" species (ie species generating osmotic pressure) in the water droplets. Then, we showed that the limiting phenomenon is the diffusion of water in the oil and we propose an expression for its kinetics. In addition, we observed two concomitant phenomena during the study of microfluidic scale oil recovery: additional oil recovery and the presence of micro-droplets of water. We propose to explain this by the swelling of the water pockets due to the phenomenon of spontaneous emulsification
