Frank Dobbins in memoriam In 1976 Louise Litterick proposed that Cambridge, Magdalene College, Pepys Library MS 1760 was originally prepared for Louis XII and Anne of Brittany of France but was gifted to Henry VIII of England in 1509. That the manuscript actually was prepared as a wedding gift from Louis to his third wife Mary Tudor in 1514, however, is indicated by its decorative and textual imagery, which mirrors the decoration of a book of hours given by Louis to Mary and the textual imagery used in her four royal entries. Analysis of the manuscript’s tabula and texts suggests that MS 1760 was planned by Louis’s chapelmaster Hilaire Bernonneau (d. 1524) at the king’s behest. The new theory elucidates the content and significance of Gascongne’s twelve-voice canon Ista est speciosa, which appeared beneath an original portrait of Mary Tudor and was intended to mirror the perfection of the Blessed Virgin and her ‘godchild’ Mary.

Resumen

This Master's thesis belongs to the field of sixteenth century studies. The text I have chosen to study is the Memoires of Marguerite de Valois, begun in 1594 and published in 1628, thirteen years following the death of this queen. My analysis encompasses both the conventions of genre and rhetoric evidenced in the text. The first chapter explores the peculiarities inherent in the memoirs genre, especially where these explicitly distinguish it from the autobiography. The second chapter examines the rhetorical aspects of Marguerite de Valois' Memoires. In doing so, I have highlighted and analyzed the rhetorical strategies employed in the text, whose ultimate intent was to convince the initial reader, Brantome, and subsequently posterity, of the political astuteness of an author who was also worthy of her correspondent's trust as a loyal ally.

Resumen

Marie de' Medici began the 'jardin du Luxembourg' during her Regency for Louis XIII. As Henry IV's queen, she had clung tenaciously to her Italian family heritage and as her upbringing had close associations with the spectacular 'giardino di Boboli', she was thus inspired to utilize it as the prototype for her Parisian garden. The validation of Marie de' Medici's success lies in the investigation of both gardens to determine the recurring features and to ascertain their precise chronology. Evidence suggests that some replicated features were well known to Marie, the 'Grotta Grande', the original layout and the amphitheatre's general form; while other features, the 'Isolotto' and the amphitheatre's stone seating, were not. These were realized either concurrently or even later than similar features at Luxembourg: a factor overlooked by historians who habitually cite the formative role of Boboli at Luxembourg.

Resumen

La culture de l'ananas s'est fortement développée à la Réunion et représente la première production fruitière de l'île en termes de valeur et de tonnage exporté. L'hétérogénéité des conditions climatiques de l'île ainsi que la diversité des pratiques culturales, notamment en ce qui concerne la fertilisation azotée et l'irrigation, mène à une forte variabilité des rendements, de la qualité gustative des fruits et d'utilisation des ressources naturelles du milieu. Le développement de systèmes de culture plus durables impose de repenser et d'optimiser l'assemblage des pratiques culturales, en prenant en compte les spécificités des différentes zones de production. Un modèle ad-hoc, SIMPIÑA a été développé afin de décrire la croissance et le développement de la plante et la qualité gustative des fruits (teneur en sucres et en acides) en fonction du climat et des pratiques culturales (poids de rejets plantés, densité, date d'induction florale, fertilisation et irrigation). Ce modèle présente la particularité d'intégrer des modules mécanistes (croissance de la plante, teneur en sucre des fruits, bilans hydriques et azotés) et des modules statistiques pour la prévision de l'acidité des fruits à la récolte et la partie économique. Les pratiques culturales sont prises en compte au travers de règles de décision qu'il est ainsi possible d'évaluer. Une typologie des pratiques culturales a été élaborée sur 40 exploitations de l'île, en amont, afin de réduire le champ des possibles et permettre de proposer des systèmes de culture innovants, en optimisant les performances des systèmes tout en prenant en compte les principales contraintes des exploitations. SIMPIÑA a été utilisé pour identifier des combinaisons de pratiques culturales des systèmes qu'il conviendra de tester « au champ ». Cette approche intégrative a permis des avancées significatives au niveau de la modélisation de la culture de l'ananas et de la définition de systèmes de culture innovants
Pineapple production is increasing on Réunion Island and represents the first fruit production, in terms of value and yield exported. The heterogeneity of climatic conditions on the island and the diversity of cultural practices, particularly with regard to nitrogen fertilization and irrigation, lead to a high variability in yield, gustatory quality of fruit and use of natural resources. The development of more sustainable cropping systems requires rethinking and optimizing the combination of agricultural practices, by taking into account the specificities of the different production areas. An ad-hoc model, SIMPIÑA was developed to describe the growth and development of pineapple plant and fruit quality (sugar and acid content) depending on climate and cultural practices (sucker weight at planting, planting density, date of flowering induction, fertilization and irrigation). This model has the particularity to integrate process-based model modules (plant growth, sugar content, water and nitrogen balance) and statistical modules (for predicting the acidity of fruit at harvest and the economic part). Cultural practices are taken into account through decision rules that may thus be assessed with the model. A typology of cultural practices was carried out based on interviews of 40 farmers all over Réunion Island and led to three farm's types with specific climatic and organizational constraints. SIMPIÑA was used to explore a wide range of combination of cultural practices, taking into account the constraints of each farm-type. We identified trends of cultural practices combinations which optimize the performances of the systems and that should be tested in the field. This integrative approach has led to significant advances in modeling pineapple production and in defining innovative cropping systems

Marguerite de Provence (1221-1295) fut l'épouse du roi capétien, Louis IX, seul roi de France à avoir été canonisé. Fille aînée de Béatrice de Savoie et du comte de Provence Raymond Bérenger V, elle est aussi l'héritière d'une dynastie illustre de Catalogne et de Provence mais au regard du faible nombre de publications et de travaux sur sa personne, force est de constater qu'elle n'est pas considérée comme une des grandes figures féminines de la monarchie française. Ce sujet tend donc à s'insérer dans l'articulation privilégiée d'un thème en plein développement qu'est l'histoire des femmes et du genre, mais il veut aussi s'inscrire dans les perspectives actuelles d'anthropologie médiévale sur les fonctions des grandes dynasties princières. À partir de la diversité des sources recensées (diplomatique, épistolaire, iconographique, narrative et littéraire), trois axes de recherches se sont imposés. Le premier vise à retravailler la relation territoriale entre la Provence, terre d'Empire, le royaume de France et le comté de Savoie. En effet, les historiens ont abordé ces alliances essentiellement sous le prisme capétien, or des éclairages nouveaux peuvent être apportés lorsqu'on y incorpore l'influence catalano-provençale. Le deuxième axe est fondé sur les relations sororales qui seront un aspect important de cette thèse ; les liens de fraternité ont été jusqu'alors bien étudiés mais nous constatons peu de travaux sur la sororité. Or, les quatre filles de Raymond Bérenger V ont marqué l'histoire pour avoir épousé chacune un roi : Marguerite de Provence épousa Louis IX , Éléonore le roi d'Angleterre Henri III, Sanchie devint la femme de Richard, comte de Cornouailles proclamé par la suite roi des Romains ; enfin Béatrice fut mariée à Charles d'Anjou, frère de Louis IX qui devint roi de Naples et de Sicile. Marguerite de Provence se trouva donc à l'intersection de puissantes parentèles et de leur entourage dont elle pouvait se servir pour asseoir ses desseins politiques. Aussi la notion de réseau constituera une approche féconde. Enfin, dernier aspect envisagé le regard nouveau que peut offrir la personnalité de Marguerite de Provence sur l'étude de la fonction d'une reine de France au Moyen Âge. En effet, le silence de certaines sources contemporaines semble pesant, en particulier on peut se demander pourquoi l'action éclatante de la reine en Égypte lors de la croisade ne lui a pas valu une meilleure reconnaissance. Ainsi, sa personnalité a pu déranger et elle est à reconsidérer et à recontextualiser au prisme de la conception et de la coutume catalane. Dans ce contexte, l'absence et la rareté des informations sur sa personne peuvent refléter une volonté d'effacer son empreinte pour ne pas faire d'ombre à son royal et saint mari
Marguerite of Provence (1221-1295) was the wife of the capétien King, Louis IX, the only French king to have been canonized. Eldest daughter of Béatrice of Savoie and the Count of Provence Raimond Bérenger V, she is also the heiress of the illustrious dynasty of Catalonia and Provence but in view of the few publications and works on her person, it is clear that she is not considered as one of the great female figures of the French monarchy. This subject tends to fit into the privileged articulation of a theme in full development of what is women's history and of the kind but it could also fit into the current perspectives of medieval anthropology on the functions of the great princely dynasties. From the diversity of identified sources (diplomatic, epistolary, narrative and literary), three lines of research impose. The first aims to study the territorial relationship between the Provence, land of the Empire, the Kingdom of France and the County of Savoy. Indeed historians have addressed these alliances essentially under the capétien prism whereas new light can be thrown on the subject if we include the catalonien-provencale influence. The second is founded on the sororales relations which will be an important aspect of this thesis; the links of fraternity have been well studied up to now but we find little research on the sorority. It is to be noted that the four daughters of Raimond Bérenger V have marked history by the fact that they all married a king : Marguerite of Provence married Louis IX, Eléonore the English King Henry III, Sanchie became the wife of Richard, the Count of Cornwall , later named King of the Romans, lastly Béatrice was married to Charles d'Anjou, the brother of Louis IX who became the King of Naples and the two Siciles. Marguerite of Provence was therefore at the intersection of powerful parenteles and their entourage which she could use for her political ambitions. The notion of a network is also a fecund approach. Thirdly, the last aspect to be considered is the personality of Marguerite of Provence which casts a new look on the study of the functions of a Queen in the Middle Ages. Indeed, the silence of certain contemporary sources seems heavy, in particular we may wonder why the eclatant action of the Queen of Egypt during the crusade did not get better recognition. So her character may have disturbed and she should be reconsidered and recontextualised in view of the catalan conception and customs. In this context the absence and the scarcity of information on her character may reflect a will to destroy her influence and not to cast a shadow over her royal and saint husband

Variabilité du contexte de production, pertes de colonies : les exploitations apicoles fontaujourd'hui face à différentes problématiques environnementales et socio-économiques. Enjeu majeur pourla filière, la durabilité des exploitations reste aujourd'hui difficile à caractériser en l’absence de référenceset d’un cadre d’évaluation adapté à l’apiculture. Cette thèse propose une définition de la durabilité adaptéeaux spécificités des exploitations apicoles, élaborée avec un ensemble d’acteurs de la filière apicole enFrance métropolitaine. Cette définition met notamment en lumière l’importance de la capacité d’adaptationdes exploitations, dans un contexte de fortes incertitudes sur les ressources alimentaires du cheptel commesur les pertes de colonies.En l’absence de leviers directs de gestion des ressources, la gestion du cheptel occupe une place centraledans le fonctionnement de l’exploitation. Pour assurer le maintien de ce cheptel malgré les pertes decolonies, différentes stratégies de renouvellement des colonies et des reines sont mises en place par lesapiculteurs. En s’appuyant sur des enquêtes auprès d’apiculteurs professionnels, la deuxième partie de cettethèse caractérise ces différentes stratégies et les pratiques qui les composent, ainsi que leur variabilité d’uneexploitation à l’autre. Ces stratégies de renouvellement contribuent directement à la durabilité del’exploitation par le maintien du cheptel, mais sont aussi en interaction avec d’autres aspects dufonctionnement de l’exploitation, qui sont abordés par la troisième partie de cette thèse. Les choixtechniques de gestion du renouvellement peuvent ainsi générer différentes contraintes dans le temps etl’organisation du travail, et contribuent à l’adaptabilité des pratiques et à la capacité d’adaptation del’exploitation apicole dans un contexte d’incertitudes.Cette thèse contribue à mieux cerner les enjeux actuels de la durabilité des exploitations apicoles, et lesinteractions possibles entre les stratégies de renouvellement du cheptel et cette durabilité
Floral resources availability, annual climatic conditions or colony losses: professionalbeekeepers have to cope with several economic and environmental challenges to ensure the sustainabilityof their farm. Through a collective work with French professional beekeepers and other stakeholders fromthe apicultural sector, this thesis defines the sustainability of bee farming systems. The adaptive capacity ofthe farm appears as a central issue to ensure the beekeeper’s sustainability goals, as beekeepers have toface an uncertain environment.To cope with the annual colony losses, the colony and queen replacement strategy is a key aspect in abee farming operation management, and can interact with other sustainability goals. The replacementstrategies of professional beekeepers are formalised and some of their main technical or socio-economicconsequences are studied. The beekeeper’s replacement strategy appears to affect their work organisation,as well as the flexibility of their practices, which both contribute to the adaptive capacity of the farm.This thesis provides an outlook on the current issues of bee farming system sustainability, and on themain interactions between the beekeeper’s replacement strategy and their farm sustainability

Le terme "Queer" ne résonne pas de la même façon en version originale - le contexte anglo-saxon d'émergence - qu'en version française. L'objectif principal de cette recherche est de questionner les phénomènes de transferts culturels dans le contexte français du féminisme queer, à la fois mouvement de pensée critique, activisme et subculture apparus au milieu des années 1980 aux Etats-Unis. De cette traduction culturelle du mouvement queer en France est né un activisme rose qui à l'inverse du contexte anglo-saxon a développé une politique basée sur une forte affirmation identitaire, à la fois collective et individuelle, afin de déjouer le modèle d'intégration français largement imprégné d'idéaux républicains et où les dérives d'un universalisme abstrait conduisent à l'aveuglement face aux inégalités entre les individus. Ainsi la question centrale qui anime cette recherche est d'examiner comment cet activisme rose fait irruption dans le contexte français réfractaire aux politiques identitaires.Et, au-delà de la seule traduction linguistique, les phénomènes de réception et d'appropriation dans le contexte français du féminisme "queer" sont à comprendre dans toutes leurs dimensions : culturelle, politique, théorique, artistique, etc. Ainsi, cette recherche cherche à comprendre les spécificités de cet activisme, de son inscription parfois mouvementée au sein des mouvements féministes et des mouvements dits LGBT, à ses applications particulières en terme de pratiques culturelles et artistiques, afin d'interroger le phénomène d'esthétisation des techniques de lutte
The term queer, when used in the French language, does not echo the same way as in English –then referring to the anglo-saxon context of emergence. The main purpose of this study is to question the phenomena of cultural transfers of queer feminism – which appeared in the mid 1980s in the United States as both a subculture and a movement of critical thinking and activism- into the French context. This cultural translation resulted in pink activism which unlike its anglo saxon original model developed a policy based on strong identity affirmation, on both a collective and individual level. The goal was to beat the French integration system deeply imbued with republican ideals, where the drifts of an abstract universalism had produced blindness towards inequalities therefore the central issue investigated in this research is how this pink activism arose in a French context of opposition to identity-based politics.Moreover, the phenomena of reception and appropriation of queer feminism into the French context must be understood beyond the sole linguistic translation – in all their dimensions, cultural political, theoritical, artistic, etc. This study aims to understand the special features of this activism, from its sometimes uneasy integration among feminist and LGBT movements to its specific applications in terms of cultural and artistic practices, thus questioning the phenomenon of aestheticism of resistance techniques

En 1631, Marie de Médicis (1573-1642), reine de France, opposée à la politique de Richelieu, quitte précipitamment le royaume pour trouver refuge à la cour de Bruxelles. Jusqu’à sa mort en 1642, elle ne réussit jamais, malgré maintes tentatives, à rentrer en France. Elle vit dans les Pays-Bas espagnols jusqu’en 1639, puis, après un bref passage dans les Provinces-Unies, à Londres jusqu’en 1641, pour finir ses jours à Cologne. Alors que la guerre de Trente ans déchire l’Europe, Marie de Médicis tisse des liens avec les princes, mais aussi avec d’autres émigrés français, tels que Gaston d’Orléans ou la duchesse de Chevreuse. A travers cette situation exceptionnelle, nous étudions les réseaux, officiels ou secrets, qui se font et se défont autour de ces émigrés. La mise en place des réseaux et leur bon fonctionnement sont assurés par des hommes, ambassadeurs, courtisans, serviteurs, qui ont chacun des profils et des ambitions différents. Leurs histoires individuelles permettent de restituer la logique organique de cet ensemble complexe et mouvant à travers lequel circulent des nouvelles. Celles-ci sont analysées du point de vue matériel de leur support et de leur acheminement, mais aussi en fonction de leur contenu, qui varie selon les circonstances et les tensions politiques du moment. Until her death in 1642, she never succeeds, in spite of many attempts, to be allowed to come back to France. She lives in the Spanish Netherlands from 1631 to 1639. Then, after a short passage through the United Provinces, she stays in London until 1641, to move out again to Cologne, where she finally dies. Whereas the Thirty Years War tears Europe to pieces, Mary de’ Médici weaves bonds not only with foreign princes, but also with other French banned emigrants, such as Gaston of Orleans or the duchess of Chevreuse. The study of this outstanding situation reveals official or secret networks, which are built up and undone around those emigrants. The making and good working of those networks are ensured by a pool of ambassadors, courtiers, servants, who have various profiles and follow different purposes. By rebuilding the individual stories of these men, we can disclose the organic logic of this complex and moving party, in which the news arise and flow. We try to provide an analysis from the point of view of the material support and routing of information, but also according to its content, which may vary following the peculiar circumstances and political issues. The circulation and changes of the news affect the diplomatic deeds in a way that must be investigated and explained. Moreover, information, as a mirror of political thoughts, is reflecting codes, symbols, representations and behaviors. Therefore, the setting and showing of information can be seen as a significant matter for political studies

Cette thèse porte sur un objet complexe liant danse contemporaine, genre et féminisme dans l’espace français de 1968 à 2015. La danse partage les préoccupations des militantes féministes à l’égard des problématiques d’identité, de sexualité, d’émancipation,de déconstruction du genre et des binarismes, de recherche universaliste ou de féminitude. Nous analysons comment le féminisme informe les artistes qui, quelle que soit l’époque, peinent à se dire féministes ou à penser leur art comme l’expression de leur engagement. Considérer le potentiel subversif de la danse implique une analyse de son rapport au genre et en particulier au genre féminin, doublée par celle de la place réelle et symbolique des femmes. Les idées reçues et les stéréotypes se confrontent à la réalité.L’année 1968 marque un tournant social qui concorde avec celui de la danse, y compris d’un point de vue politique. L’art chorégraphique prend son essor au moment où la seconde vague féministe arrive sur le devant de la scène. En 50 ans les rapports qu’entretiennent la danse et le féminisme sont reconfigurés, ce qui permet d’évaluer les influences réciproques et de postuler l’existence d’une danse féministe. La confrontation aux langages des chorégraphes hommes permet de comprendre les constructions genrées et leur potentiel de remise en cause du système hétéronormé et androcentré.Comment les grandes mutations politiques (mise en place des CCN, turn-over des directions, parité, etc.),féministes (apparition d’une troisième vague, etc.),esthétiques et médiatiques nourrissent-elles la danse en tant que moyen d’expression du genre et du féminisme ? La généralisation de la nudité et la queerisation de la danse soulèvent l’enjeu du passage de la transgression du genre à sa subversion. Il s’agit de comprendre comment la troisième vague féministe, plus ouverte à la dimension culturelle et intersectionnelle, permet à la danse d’être féministe
This thesis analyses a complex question linkingcontemporary dance, gender and feminism in Francefrom 1968 to 2015. Dance shares the concerns offeminist activists regarding issues of identity, sexuality, emancipation, the deconstruction of gender andbinarisms, of universalist research and femaleness. Thisstudy examines how feminism informed artists who,whatever the era, had difficulty admitting that they werefeminists or seeing their art as an expression of theircommitment. Considering the subversive potential ofdance implies an analysis of its relationship with gender,in particular the female gender, as well as the real andsymbolic place of women. Preconceived ideas andstereotypes thus confront reality. The year 1968 markeda turning point for society and for dance, including froma political point of view. Dance came into its own at thesame time that second-wave feminism came to the fore.The reconfiguration of the relationships between danceand feminism that occurred over this 50-year periodallows one to assess reciprocal influences and topostulate the existence of a feminist dance. Comparingfemale choreographers' modes of expression with thoseof men, facilitates the understanding of genderedconstructions and their potential for challengingheteronormativity and androcentrism. How do the majorpolitical changes (establishment of the NCCs,management changes, parity, etc.), feminists(appearance of a third wave, etc.), aesthetics andmediatisation nurture dance as a means of expressionof gender and feminism? The generalisation of nudityand the queerisation of dance suggest the passage fromthe transgression of gender to its subversion. This thesis explores the influence of French royal image-making on English monarchies at the turn of the eighteenth century. It investigates the relevance of Louis XIV (r. 1643-1715) to English royal iconography during the reigns of William III (r. 1689-1702) and Queen Anne (r. 1702-1714) across a wide range of source material - from panegyric and portraiture, to medals, sculpture, and architecture. In doing so, it foregrounds the intricate interplay between political communication and different forms of artistic imagination in the early modern period. The thesis conceptualises the relation between post-revolutionary English monarchical image-making and its French counterpart as one of contest with and emancipation from French influence. The specific political circumstances add a particular poignancy to the investigation of this narrative, as the almost continual crises which the English monarchy suffered at the time stand in sharp contrast with the (dynastic) stability of the French monarchy and its highly influential court culture. Despite these elements of rupture and contrast, however, the story of seventeenth-century English monarchical image-making is one of continuity in respect of its gradual disengagement from the French model. In contrast to his immediate predecessors, I contend, William's image-making presents him as Louis's competitor, rather than his imitator. In the course of William's reign, Louis's monarchical model thus turns from model to foil. This development evolves further in Queen Anne's reign, culminating in Louis's mort avant la lettre, as Anne's image-making dispenses with the Ludovican model both as model and as foil. English post-revolutionary image-making, I argue, not only mirrored, but actively contributed to the decline of the Ludovican model, whilst maintaining the figure of the monarch as central to public political discourse. Through the lens of monarchical image-making, therefore, this thesis offers a critical outlook onto late seventeenth-century Anglo-French political and artistic relations.

Révolutionnaires et centrales dans la pensée freudienne, les théories du sexuel ont progressivement perdu leur place transgressive dans la psychanalyse contemporaine pour devenir le décalque des normes sociales. Cette thèse se propose d'étudier les effets de ces théories sur l'écoute des thérapeutes français/es, à partir notamment d'une analyse approfondie de la littérature freudienne et post-freudienne, mais aussi des ouvrages critiques et dissidents de ce courant, et de l'hypothèse selon laquelle cette littérature n'est pas en mesure de préparer les professionnel/les à entendre leurs patient/es dans l’expression de leur vie sexuelle.Pour se faire, des entretiens ont été menés aussi bien avec des patient/es, que des thérapeutes, visant à évaluer la place et le rôle des théories analytiques dans l'écoute et l'accompagnement des personnes, mais également de proposer quelques pistes théoriques susceptibles d'établir une approche ouverte, non-sexiste et libératrice de la thérapie. Cette étude rejoint les critiques, formulées par le mouvement des femmes et les études queer, et fait état des risques cliniques que font courir des théories psychanalytiques qui donnent et perpétuent une vision conservatrice, voire réactionnaire, de la sexualité, de la sexuation ou encore du désir. Ces écueils pouvant être à l’origine des pratiques cliniques irrespectueuses, voire nocives, auxquelles les patient/es qui ont répondu aux entretiens ont pu être confronté/es, notamment les femmes et les minorités sexuelles et de genre. En valorisant une approche qui met en dialogue différentes théories du sexuel et de la subjectivité, cette thèse vise à prolonger les efforts de celles et ceux qui cherchent constamment à améliorer l'écoute et l'accompagnement des professionnel/les de la thérapie
Revolutionaries and essential in Freudian thought, sexual theories gradually lost their transgressive role in contemporary psychoanalysis to become copies of social standards. This thesis proposes to study the effects of these theories on the capacity of French therapists to listen, from from a thorough analysis of Freudian and post-Freudian literature, but also of the dissidents and critical works of this current. This was in the aim to try on the hypothesis that, due to the content of the French psy training, therapists are badly prepared to listen, understand and help their patients in the expression of their sexual lives

Notre propos interroge la pluralisation des formes d’émancipation féministe en France depuis le milieu des années 1990 au regard de la confrontation entre féminisme matérialiste et féminisme queer. Nous sommes partis de l’hypothèse que l’articulation entre ces deux positions théorico-politiques est possible car elle se réalise dans les pratiques militantes queer-féministes actuelles. Nous affirmons que cette conjugaison est pertinente et mérite d’être davantage théorisée car elle porte selon nous une radicalité inclusive. L’alliance de ces deux approches interroge la définition du sujet féministe et, en particulier, l’élaboration non-essentialiste de l’unité politique. Nous analysons dans quelle mesure la démarche (contre-)hégémonique ainsi que le projet de démocratie radicale plurielle et agonistique donnent des outils pour répondre à cette question. Notre thèse est la suivante : le constructivisme radical qui résulte de l’union entre féminisme matérialiste et féminisme queer devrait développer une stratégie hégémonique de construction du sujet politique, car celle-ci prend en compte la pluralité et la contingence du social mais vise également l’unité et la stabilité du « nous » politique afin de renverser les diverses dominations matérielles. Ce constructivisme conçoit le politique comme institution du social et développe une compréhension de la politique comme organisation du conflit en situation d’indécidabilité
This research addresses the pluralization of feminist emancipation’s forms in France since the mid-1990s in light of the conflict between materialist and queer feminisms. We have taken as our starting point the hypothesis that the linkage between these two political theoretic discourses is possible since it actually takes place in the « queer-feminist » movement’s militant practices. We argue that this combination is meaningful and deserves to be better theorized since it carries with it a message of radicalism and inclusiveness. The alliance of the two approaches questions the definition of the feminist subject, and especially the formulation of a political unity which is not essentialist. We analyze the extent to which both the (counter-)hegemonic approach and the project of a radical, agonistic and plural democracy provide us with tools to answer this issue. Our argument runs as follow : the discourse of radical constructivism that results from the union between materialistic and queer feminisms should develop a hegemonic strategy regarding the conception of the political subject for two reasons. First, this strategy takes into account the plurality of the contingency of the social realm. Second, it aims at unifying and stabilizing the political « Us » in order to reverse the various material domination’s manifestations. Such a constructivist theory thinks of the political realm as an institution of the social realm and develops an understanding of politics as the organization of conflict in a situation of undecidability

Cette étude retrace l'histoire de l'implantation de l'Eglise de Jésus-Christ des Saints des Erniers Jours (les mormons) en france, en Suisse et en Belgique francophones. Elle suit l'impact des évolutions du mormonisme américain sur le mormonisme en Europe (relations du centre à la périphérie) lors de son internationalisation. 4 étapes sont apparues opératoires. 1 : L'Emigration au XIXe siècle ou le rassemblement des convertis en Utah, la nouvelle Sion. 2 :Dans sa quête d'intégration de la société américaine (fin de la polygamie, du pouvoir politique, économique, judiciaire), la revalorisation de l'Implantation internationale. 3 : Avec le prosélytisme, la prise de conscience des implications de l'Implantation internationale et les changements structurels induits. Enfin, 4 : les difficultés pour ces communautés mormones d'obtenir une Intégration dans la société environnante. Une enquête a été menée sur les Mormons adultes pratiquants en france, en 2007. Cette communauté apparaît sociologiquement proche de la population française (catégories socioprofessionnelles, niveau d'éducation et multiculturalisme, etc. ). Seules les différences de valeurs et principes de vie sont apparus posant les questions de la conversion et de la désaffiliation. D'autres questions traversent l'étude : les relations Eglises-Etats, l'image du mormonisme dans les médias, les relations entre culture américaine de l'intitution et culture des convertis en France, les rapports entre Mormons français et leurs concitoyens. Ces perspectives transversales revèlent les différents dilemmes auxquels les Mormons français doivent faire face, au carrefour entre plusieurs cultures
This study follows the history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (the Mormons) in france and in French speaking Switzerland and Belgium. It shows the impact of the evolution of American Mormonism on European Mormonism and the relationships, from center to periphery, of the internationalization process. 4 stages appear as operative. 1 : The Emigration, throughout the 19th century, or the gathering of Mormon converts in Utah, their "Zion". 2 : In a quest for integration in the American Society (abolition of polygamy, end of political, economical and judicial power of the LDS church), a renewed commitment to the mission of international Predication. 3 : With the expansion of prozelytising, comes the structural changes implied by an international Establishment. Finally, 4 : The desire and the difficulties of obtaining their integration within the hosting society. A survey has also been conducted among active Mormon adults in France in 2007. This community appears to be sociologically close to the Franch population (socioprofessional categories, level of education, multiculturalism, etc. ). Only differences in values and living principles have appeared withe the questions of conversion and retention. Other themes go through our study, such as the State-Church relations (is Mormonism a "sect" ?), the image of Mormonism in the Medias, the relationship between the American culture of the institution in the US and the French culture of the converts, the relationships between the French Mormons and their fellow citizens. These transversal persepectives reveal the many dilemmas the French Mormons must face at the crossroad of several cultures

L’objectif de ce travail de recherche est de mieux comprendre le fonctionnement psychique des jeunes dits « incasables ». Le terme « incasable » est récurrent dans le champ de la protection de l’enfance. Il définit les « adolescents difficiles », « adolescents en très grande difficulté » ou encore « ceux dont personne ne veut »… Nombreux sont les termes pour les nommer. La complexité de cette clinique m’amène à reprendre l’histoire et l’évolution des institutions qui accueillent les jeunes en France afin de comprendre comment elles se sont adaptées aux enfants et adolescents « difficiles ». En posant une problématique, je m’interroge sur le fonctionnement psychique de ces jeunes, lié au manque de la fonction paternelle et au rôle de la fonction tiercéisante. Sujet qui me semble central pour mieux penser l’accompagnement. Ancré dans la clinique et à partir de deux études de cas suivis pendant plus de deux années, je présente Paul et Laurent, deux jeunes accueillis en institution et que l’on pourrait qualifier « d’incasables ». Cette clinique est complexe de par la diversité des concepts et des termes employés pour définir ces jeunes. Elle implique une réflexion sur les notions de transfert et de contre-transfert présentes tout au long de la recherche. Sous l’angle de la psychanalyse et parfois sous d’autres approches - puisque la notion « d’incasable » est diverse - j’étudie les enjeux institutionnels dans l’accompagnement de ces jeunes. Les notions d’absence du père et des carences maternelles apportent un éclairage sur ce qui fait de Paul et Laurent des jeunes appelés « incasables ». Néanmoins, cette étiquette ne leur collera pas à la peau indéfiniment
The purpose of this research is to better understand the psychological workings of those youths that are called « unplaceable ». The term « unplaceable » is recurring in child welfare services. It defines those « troubled teenagers », « teenagers with behavioural issues », those « no one wants »… They are called by a variety of terms. The complex nature of this clinical case will lead to a review of the history and evolution of the institutions caring for children in France, so as to understand how they adapted to « troubled » children and teenagers. Through this issue, I will examine the psychological workings of those teenagers, linked to the lack of paternal function and the role of thirdness, a subject that seems central to better understand child care. The clinical case, studied throughout more than two years, is that of Paul and Laurent, two institutionalized youths that could be called “unplaceable”. This clinical case is made more complex by the diversity of concepts and terms used to define those teenagers. It implies a reflexion on the notions of transference and countertransference that will be present for the duration of the research work. The institutional stakes present in the care for those youths will be examined through a psychoanalytical angle, and sometimes other points of view – given that the notion of “unplaceability” is diverse. The notions of the absence of the father and maternal lack can shed some light on what makes Paul and Laurent “unplaceable”. But they will not be labelled thus indefinitely

This dissertation is an in-depth critical analysis of four American films made during the 1970s, with emphasis placed on the films' construction of gender and sexuality. This dissertation draws from the tradition of queer film criticism presented in the writings of such theorists as Barbara Creed, Alexander Doty, Richard Dyer, Vito Russo, and Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick. Taking a queer perspective, these film readings explore how particular works implement queer codes and foster a sexually ambiguous world on film. While not typically included in discussions of Queer Cinema or New American Cinema, these four films, Martin Scorsese's Mean Streets (1973), Francis Ford Coppola's The Conversation (1974), Steven Spielberg's Jaws (1975), and Stanley Kubrick's The Shining (1980), exhibit a family resemblance and as a cycle are products of a particular period in American cinematic experimentation. A detailed scene-by-scene analysis is enacted in order to bring to light queer moments in the films and queer concerns of the films' makers. Raising questions about how the camera constructs character identities in these films, this study is reflective of the ways queer perspectives inflect filmmaking from this era.

Diffusée par Studio 4, Les Engagés se présente comme la première " série " française dont une majorité de personnages appartient à la communauté LGBT. Centré sur la phase de production de cette websérie et sur la question de l’innovation, ce travail de thèse pose plusieurs questions : la différence série/websérie, le rôle de l'innovation par la websérie au sein de France Télévisions mais aussi la place et la représentation de personnages LGBT dans les séries et webséries françaises. Pour étudier les rapports entre innovation, Genre, minorités et industries culturelles, ce travail s’appuie sur une observation participante de plusieurs mois au sein de la production des Engagés, depuis les débats entre scénariste, diffuseur et société de production, jusqu’à la post-production en passant par le tournage, ainsi que sur des entretiens compréhensifs menés avec treize membres de la production
In 2012, France Televisions launches "Studio 4", a platform with their own web series. This platform is part of the department "Les Nouvelles Ecritures" and one of their main goals is to innovate. Broadcasted by Studio 4, Les Engagés present themselves as the first french "series", having the majority of the characters part of the LGBT community. Focused on the production phase of these webseries and on the question of innovation, a number of fundamental questions arise : What are the differences between series and web series ? Why are web series playing a key role in innovation ? How are LGBT characters in French series and web series represented ? To study the relationships between innovation, cultural industries, gender and minorities, I based myself on a participant observation done over several months, from pre-production to shooting to post-production, and on comprehensive interviews held with 13 members of the production

Cette thèse s’inscrit dans le champ de la géographie des sexualités et contribue plus précisément au champ des géographies queers. Elle étudie la manière dont sont pensés les lieux queers en commençant par les définir, explorant la manière dont ils s’organisent de manière rhizomatique. Les personnes queers créent des lieux à travers des constellations de personnes qui se regroupent autour d’un rapport spécifique au genre et à la sexualité ainsi qu’autour d’un discours politique queer. Après avoir fait l’archéologie de ces milieux, une étude sera menée sur la violence que vivent les personnes queers dans l’espace public jusque dans les espaces privés. La violence systémique est décrite par l’analyse des rapports de domination et des normes. Les violences intracommunautaires sont ensuite étudiées. L’auteur.e propose finalement une critique des espaces queers sécurisés (safe space) pour proposer une autre conception des lieux par la construction d’espaces bienveillants. La méthodologie de la thèse est fondée sur l’observation participante, l’auto-ethnographie ainsi qu’un questionnaire et des entretiens venant compléter les sources. Un accent a été mis sur la réflexivité de la recherche, notamment sur le travail émotionnel que doit faire le chercheur.e face à ce type de terrain
This thesis is a contribution to the geographies of sexualities and more specifically to queer geographies. It first seeks to understand how queer places are created by the many ways they are defined, though of, and organized in their rhizomatic pattern. Self-defined queer people have indeed a tendency to create places through the gathering of an array of persons who are connected by a particular relationship to gender, sexuality, as well as by the political component of the queer discourse. Focusing next on the “milieux de vie” that emerged from this loose network of places, the research looks at the systematic violence exerted against queer people in the public and private space. This phenomenon is seen and explained through a set of norms and domination patterns occurring at different levels and scales in society. Violence within the communities is finally studied. The author concludes in examining and in offering a critic of the concept of safe space, which lay the ground for the proposal of the construction of espaces bienveillants (derived from the concept of brave place). The study was conducted through participant observations, auto-ethnographic method, on-line surveys and direct conversations. Reflexivity was at the center of the field work, the author insists most notably on the emotional work researcher faces in this type of research

La présente thèse entend rendre compte d’un parcours de recherche entrepris il y a près de trente ans. Ces recherches ont connu divers développements pour lesquels une ligne conductrice peut cependant être dégagée : elles ont toutes trait à l’histoire des élites médiévales.Un premier axe concerne les enquêtes sur la société féodale de l’Orient latin. L’édition d’un texte généalogique, Les Lignages d’Outremer, a été le point de départ d’une série de publications sur ces familles, complétées par celle d’un récit de pèlerinage aux Lieux saints.Le second axe a pour objet la sigillographie. Le présent travail expose d’abord les travaux réalisés sur la sigillographie des reines et des enfants de France au Moyen Âge. L’autre volet de cette thématique a trait à la sigillographie des rois et empereurs des périodes mérovingienne et carolingienne, étude entreprise grâce à l’examen des 250 diplômes royaux conservés aux Archives nationales. À l’origine de ces publications, il y a une étonnante découverte, celle de la présence de cheveux humains dans les sceaux, pour laquelle nous tentons de trouver une explication, dans les diverses parties de ce travail et en particulier dans le mémoire De Anolo, joint au dossier.Enfin, un troisième axe est consacré à la pratique professionnelle que j’ai pu développer en tant que conservateur d’Archives. Les travaux proposés ici sont alors le témoignage des missions que j’ai pu exercer : au-delà de la publication d’instruments de recherche, une large place est faite aux problématiques de conservation préventive
This thesis presents the results of research conducted over the past thirty years on the history of medieval elites. The thesis focuses on two major topics. The first is the society of the Latin East. Publication of a genealogical text, Les lignages d’Outremer, has been followed by a series of studies of the noble families of the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem and an edition of an account of a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. The second area is royal sigillography. Studies of the seals of medieval French queens and their children constitute one facet of this research, whereas examination of the seals found on 250 diplomas in the Archives nationales has facilitated exploration of the seals of Merovingian and Carolingian kings and emperors. The discovery of human hair in the seals has prompted the search for possible explanations of this phenomenon, which are proposed and discussed in different parts of the dossier, particularly in an appendix, "De anolo." An additional, supplementary part of my work has focused on the conservation of seals and the development of methods to prevent their deterioration

A partir d’un rapprochement entre les films musicaux et les mélodrames réalisés parJacques Demy et Vincente Minnelli, ce travail examine les performances masculines dans lecontexte de l’après-guerre. Cette période de transformations sociales voit l’avènementd’une culture filmique transatlantique qui interroge et remet en cause les normes liées au genreet à la sexualité. Articulant approches esthétique et actorale, l’étude de la mise en scène met aujour la production de discours genrés ambivalents, historicisés en fonction des spécificités socio-culturelles propres aux cadres de production hollywoodien et français. Le film musical et lemélodrame, dans leur esthétique camp, se révèlent des lieux de négociations identitaires où seconstruit un rapport inédit au politique. On montre ici que les deux cinéastes, réunis par leur stylemélodramatique analogue, imaginent et rêvent des modèles de masculinités alternatives fondéessur des valeurs empathiques. This thesis explores masculinities as a multidisciplinary field for thinking power relations. By connecting musical films and melodramas by Jacques Demy and Vincente Minnelli, this work examines male performances in the post-war context. This period of social transformations has given rise to the emergence of a transatlantic film culture that questions and challenges normsrelated to gender and sexuality. Articulating aesthetic and cultural studies approaches, the study of mise en scène brings to light the production of ambivalent gendered discourses, historicized according to the specific socio-cultural aspect of Hollywood and French film production environments. Musical films and melodramas, through their camp aesthetics, reveal themselvesas spaces of identity negotiation where an unprecedented rapport with politics is constructed. Both filmmakers, united by their similar melodramatic style, imagine and dream about models of alternative masculinities based on empathic values. In front of the camera, vulnerability, emotions and strong feelings become political weapons to refound and reinvent the community

This thesis examines the literary representations of Jeanne d’Albret (1528-1572), Queen of Navarre. While this historical figure has already known many historical studies, this work seeks to highlight her importance in French literature, as subject, patron and writer herself. Concentrating on the theme of feminine exemplarity and its rhetorical implications, this study will show the evolution and transformation of Jeanne d’Albret’s representation in the literary world, from various epidictic pieces composed for her during her childhood, to the legacy of a woman of letters, to the celebration of a strong Calvinist Queen, and eventually to the shadowing of these successes in the eighteenth-century Encyclopédie.

Resumen

This dissertation examines the patronage of Marie de Brabant, queen of France (1260-1322), and how her commissions transformed the atmosphere of the late Capetian court. Bringing with her from her native duchy of Brabant an established set of cultural preferences strikingly different from those that the saintly Louis IX had promoted in Paris for the previous half century, she introduced a love of secular material and elaborate ceremony upon her arrival in 1274. Taking the form of manuscript illumination, sculpture, stained glass, and architecture, as well as literature, music, science, history, genealogy, ritual, and finery, Marie’s patronage set a trend for courtly consumption for the remainder of the medieval period. Nearly always political in nature, her commissions were nonetheless sumptuous to behold, whether secular or sacred in content and they announced her status as Carolingian princess and French queen. Analysis of the frontispiece of Bibliothèque de l’Arsenal Ms. 3142, a richly illuminated miscellany of fictional, historical, and didactic poetry is crucial for understanding Marie’s taste and priorities, and is complemented by study of her other commissions in Brabant and France. These commissions varied from large scale -- such as the addition of chapels to the east end of the church of Notre-Dame in Mantes or window programs for the chapel of St. Nicholas at the church of St.-Nicaise in Reims and her parent’s necropolis at the church of the Dominicans in Louvain -- to smaller format -- the châsse of Ste. Gertrude at Nivelles or the donor statues of the chapelle de Navarre at Mantes. Most numerous, however, are the manuscripts that made up her diverse library which included the secular romances of Adenet le Roi and the scientific treatises of Guillaume de Nangis as well as historical and religious texts all of which were illuminated by the most renowned and creative artists of the day. After an analysis of her patronage as queen and widow, I look to how her activities as patron and collector influenced other late Capetian royal women, many of whom Marie had raised and whose activities, in turn, complemented and complicated their mentor’s vision of queenship.

Resumen

This dissertation examines homo/sexual representation in French and American literature and film from 1977-2001. I use the slash to distinguish between two areas of representation whose relationship forms the object of my comparative analysis. Focusing on narratives featuring sexual encounters between men, I analyze sexual representation as it ranges from reticence to frankness. I consider these same narratives in relation to what I call "homo representation," the interpretation of sexuality in minoritizing terms of identities, communities and politics. I argue that French texts demonstrate a greater frankness in relation to sexual representation; the dominance of a universalist tradition in France, however, inhibits the categorization of these texts and the sexuality they depict as "homosexual" or "gay"---or at least limits the political significance of that categorization. In contrast, I argue that the American texts I consider participate in a minoritized gay literature and subculture that has evolved in response to the greater reticence around sexual representation in the American mainstream. That mainstream, however, proves to be more open to "homo representation" on the levels of both culture and politics. I analyze texts by Renaud Camus, John Rechy, Dominique Fernandez, Edmund White, Cyril Collard, Gregg Araki, Guillaume Dustan, Dennis Cooper, Paul Smaïl, and Samuel R. Delany, situating them in the context of various genres. Applying minoritizing vs. universalizing strategies and normalizing vs. transgressive ones in different ways, these genres include coming out narratives (for which I propose an alternative gay Bildungsroman model), AIDS narratives, "ghetto" narratives, "assimilative" narratives and "queer" narratives. Within my American examples, minoritizing ghetto narratives predominate, establishing alternative community norms that are themselves challenged by more transgressive queer narratives. In my French examples, however, universalizing assimilative narratives are more usual, even as they reserve a surprisingly privileged place for transgressive sexuality in comparison with their more normalizing assimilative counterparts in the United States. I argue that these differences must ultimately be understood in relation to contrasting ways of situating sexuality, literature, and politics within the public and private spheres, even as those configurations continue to evolve in both countries through the 1990s and beyond.

Resumen

What forms of resistance are gay men in France and North America enacting against heteronormativity and homophobia? And why are they enacting these particular forms of resistance? To answer these questions, this thesis aims to draw connections between gay men's resistance strategies and larger socio-political phenomena in both France and North American cultures. First I focus on the discursive construction of citizens, both heterosexual and homosexual, in order to illustrate how gay men are relegated to second-class citizenship based on their sexual identities and practices. My focus, here, is cultural citizenship and sexual citizenship, two themes that run throughout this thesis. Next, I use Foucault's theories of knowledge-power to reveal how power relations in society discursively create subject positions, such as 'homosexuals' and 'heterosexuals', utilizing structures of control, norms, rewards, and punishments in order to champion heterosexuality to the detriment of homosexuality. In order to contest exercises of power, gay men engage in acts of resistance. i examine scholarly debates centered on resistance, and create a list of criterion for overt resistance, which I dub A AVOIR Resistance on account that it includes the characteristics of Action, Alternatives, Visibility, Opposition, Intent, and Recognition. Utilizing my rubric for overt resistance, as well as Foucault's notions of power, I analyze interview transcripts from a sample of gay men in North America and France to reveal that some gay men, living outside of large metropolitan areas, are rejecting hegemonic ideals of 'gayness' and integrating into mainstream heteronormative society. These men are creating what I call 'authentic communities' where many individuals from various backgrounds and lifestyles live together harmoniously based primarily on access to resources rather than identity markers such as sexual identity. this research shows a split between the ways that urban and suburban gay men embody their homosexuality. Since research on gay men focuses on those living in urban areas, my research calls, instead, for focus on suburban gay men and their resistance to homo-normative ideologies of what it means to me gay.

Abstract This thesis illustrates the social engagement in the literary writings of Pier Vittorio Tondelli, an Italian gay author whose works have been described by many Catholic, Materialists, and gay critics as frivolous and disengaged. The dissertation summarizes the mutation of the Italian literary concept of impegno from Neorealism to Postmodernism, through a selection of the texts of Elio Vittorini, Italo Calvino, Franco Fortini, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Leonardo Sciascia, and Umberto Eco. It shows how Tondelli’s interpretation of the role of the writer falls within the definitions given by Calvino and Eco. Moreover, the thesis demonstrates that Altri libertini and Pao Pao satisfy the characteristics of littérature mineure established by Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari, though Tondelli’s oeuvre is socially engaged instead of being politically engaged because of his lack of a political ideology. The dissertation highlights the core of Tondelli’s social commitment in his passionate defense of the outcasts in: Altri libertini where drug addicts, homosexuals, transsexuals, and bums are the protagonists; Pao Pao where a group of gay soldiers is described in its grotesque and camp attempt to “homosexualize” their barrack; Rimini where the Riviera Adriatica is portrayed as a place where everyone passes by and no one belongs; Camere separate through the love story of a gay couple in which one partner has to survive his lover’s death, due to an illness that is demonstrated in this thesis to be AIDS, while fighting against the homophobia of their families, institutions, society, and religion. Most of Tondelli’s socially excluded characters are introduced to the reader through an internal homodiegetic point of view. Another important component of Tondelli’s impegno is his open defense of both pop-culture and counter-cultures: gay, hippies, rockers, experimental theatre, street artists and alternative radio, which are central in all his writings.
