Resumen
Contemporary quality issues in product design are moving from materialistic to emotional user fulfillment; comprehensive research is needed to examine quality product feelings. This research is directed toward a deeper understanding of user and customer quality feelings for different product types, including services. The quality feelings concept includes dimensions of product quality, especially functionality, ergonomics and aesthetics. The first objective of this thesis is to identify, prioritize and synthesize quality feelings into product attributes in product development applications. The second objective is to explore, test and propose methodological approaches for designing quality feelings into products. Several methods from psychology, ergonomics, statistics and probabilistic methods and heuristics were applied to achieve the objectives. From a methodological viewpoint, Likert scales, free elicitation technique and Just About Right scales were applied for data collection. Multiple Regression, Factor Analysis, Correspondence Analysis, Genetic algorithms, Partial Least Squares (PLS) and Rough Sets (RS) were applied for data analyses. For ergonomic product evaluations, direct observations, 3D workload simulations, time and frequency analyses were conducted. Five product applications are included in this thesis: operator driver cabin design of reach trucks, steering wheel design trigger switch design in right-angled nutrunners, bed-making systemsproducts and waiting room environments. Heuristic methods were found effective when there is a high number of product attributes that interact to provide quality feelings. RS results are consistent with PLS attribute predictions. When the number of product attributes is large in comparison to the number of observations, PLS extracts informative results for quality feelings. The RS method is effective in identifying interactions among design attributes. Quality feelings are associated with both tangible (tactile characteristics) and intangible (quick and easy to use) product characteristics. Words such as safety, functionality, ergonomics, comfort, reliability, supportiveness, usability, feedback, pleasantness, attractiveness, durability and distinctiveness describe quality feelings from tangible products and services. Based on product type, the quality dimensions represented by these words possess different interactions and dependencies. In work environments, products act as prostheses between workers for social interaction, which need to be considered as important quality feelings dimensions.

Resumen
This study explored the experience of shame in nursing using an interpretive phenomenological approach as described by van Manen (1997). Shame is a concept that has been extensively theorised within the social sciences as important in the development of individual identity, self esteem and role performance but overlooked in nursing. The purpose of this research was twofold; to gain an understanding of how shame influences and shapes nursing identity and to produce knowledge and stimulate dialogue about what that means for nursing culture. Participants were asked to discuss significant interactions with colleagues. Significantly, all disclosed the experience of shame. Further, four major themes emerged from this study to deepen understanding of what appears to be a cultural experience. The experience of shame involves: self appraisal, professional identity in conflict, the experience of isolation and recrimination. Within each theme a number of sub themes were identified including feeling dumb, being incompetent, withdrawing and going quiet and seeking revenge. The study concluded that in relation to nursing, internalised shame is not readily recognised although negative emotions that are linked to it are clearly felt. When these emotions are left unprocessed or unidentified as shame, then they are likely to have negative consequences. But recognising this hidden shame and bringing it to conscious awareness can express and perhaps relieve shame. Further, shame's adaptive functions, to provide moral direction and teach respect, could be acknowledged or reclaimed. It is argued therefore that acknowledging and discussing shame openly in nursing, such as through future research, scholarships and education, will facilitate consciousness raising and the potential for cultural change.

Resumen
Nowadays, Third Generation (3G) mobile phones equipped with powerful hardware are becoming popular and dominating the market of cellular com-munication systems. Features such as music and video players, in-built Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers, navigation maps, Internet connectivity and high resolution cameras has converted mobile phones into so called Smartphones. With the increase in applications and services, limitations on energy consumption are also increasing. Therefore, it is more im-portant for manufacturers to nd e ective means of increasing battery life of mobile phones, as the mobile device itself is energy consuming and longer operational times are demanded by customers. Good energy mangement in mobile phones requires a good understanding of the energy usage in mobile phones. To this end, this thesis report presents the results of power and energy consumption measurements conducted on available Smartphones. The services under investigation includes basic Smartphone functionalities and few Internet services are studied and conclusions were drawn. This paper presents a cost e ective methodology for reliable measurements of energy on Smartphones. It also examines the e ect of operating systems on en-ergy consumption in mobile phones and reports less energy consumption for Android supported phones. The energy consumption of these Smartphones with respect to various applications has been studied and related to Quality of Experience of users'. Based on the results conclusions were drawn.

Resumen
Mindfulness is a quality of consciousness that consists of purposeful attention to and awareness of the present moment, approached with an attitude of openness, acceptance, and nonjudgment. Research evidence shows that mindfulness has positive effects on mental health and psychological well-being, physical health, and quality of intimate relationships. However, few researchers have studied the effects of mindfulness in a work setting. In this project, I expanded previous research by exploring how mindfulness, as developed in a mindfulness-based training program, affects the workplace outcomes of performance and citizenship behavior. I proposed that these effects are mediated through the positive effects of mindfulness on one's experienced affect and one's work relationships. I also examined interdependence as a moderator of the relationship quality-work outcomes relationship. The research study employed an experimental group of participants in a mindfulness-based program and a nonequivalent control group to test the specific hypotheses. Data were provided by multiple sources: mindfulness, affect, and role interdependence by study participants; relationship quality by coworkers; performance and citizenship behavior by supervisors. Analytic strategy was comprised of correlational analysis and regression as well as analytical procedures for moderated mediation. The mindfulness-based programs were effective in increasing mindfulness, particularly for those participants who were lower in mindfulness prior to program participation. Participants also experienced improved affect. However, the proposed model relating mindfulness to work outcomes was not supported. Mindfulness was significantly related to positive and negative affect as predicted; however, mindfulness was not significantly correlated with relationship quality or job performance. Its significant relationship with citizenship behavior was in the opposite direction as hypothesized. In the full model, coefficients for mindfulness, experienced affect, relationship quality, and role interdependence in the prediction of job performance and citizenship behavior were not significant. Additionally, interdependence did not interact with relationship quality to predict work outcomes. Implications of the study for mindfulness-based programs in work settings and for future research are discussed.

Resumen
Achieving product and process quality are among the central themes of software engineering, and quality is an important factor in the marketplace. Usability and user experience (UX) are two important aspects of quality, particularly for interactive products. To achieve usability means producing products that let users do things in a satisfactory, efficient and effective way. To develop products with good UX, means going beyond usability, in ways that are still not clear to us. Achieving good usability and UX is hard. This thesis is concerned with organizations which work towards these goals. This research is concerned with understanding and improving the processes by which technology is designed and developed, and understanding the demands and expectations users have. It is about how companies can and actually develop products with good usability and UX, and what stops them from working towards this as efficiently as they could. We have viewed the usability and UX challenge from the viewpoints of Quality, Organizations, and Institutions, with a focus on participatory design, user-centred design and wicked problems. The research can be characterised as empirical research performed over a period of seven years, in close cooperation with industrial partners. The research was performed using multiple data collection methods to create constructs and shape theory. The field methods have ranged from being a participant observer, to performing interviews and holding workshops with members of the participating organisations. A case study approach was initially used, but focus soon moved from case study methodology to a closer focus on grounded theory, and finally the focus shifted to constructivist grounded theory. The thesis contributes to the field of software engineering in several ways. Usability has a long history within software engineering, human computer interaction, and design science, but the different discourses within the fields have meant that communication between the fields was problematic. The research in this thesis has moved between the different fields, contributing to bridging the gap between the areas. It gives an illustration of how usability work actually takes place in different types of companies, from a developer of operating systems for smartphones, to a global engineering company, which knows that it must find ways of working with, and measuring, usability and user experience. It gives concrete knowledge about the way in which companies can work with usability testing, and how they can provide information to satisfy the information needs of different stakeholders. It provides a discussion of the state of UX today, taking up the problems that stop industry making use of the definitions and theories of UX that exist. Thus, it gives an illustration of the different factors in product design, development and sales, from dealing with organizational factors to satisfying user needs, that all make usability work such a rocky road to navigate.

Offering memorable experiences to customers is an effective marketing strategy in hospitality and tourism. However, the effects of memorable experiences have remained largely unexamined. Two research models were proposed through a literature review to present the antecedents that effectively lead to memorizing travel experiences. Since researchers in customer service management have recently claimed the significance of creating good memories related to consumption experiences, this study developed the discussion on links among the antecedents and memory and hypothesized the sequential relationships among the constructs. Study 1 examined the relationships between antecedents (experience quality, hedonic value, utilitarian value, and satisfaction) and post-experience memory in cruise tourism. Using an online survey, 375 vacationers who traveled on an ocean cruise ship were recruited. Structure Equation Modeling showed that the experience quality of cruise travel consisting of seven experience dimensions had a positive influence on helping memory formation through hedonic value and utilitarian value. The results underscored the critical effect of memory on word-of-mouth. This study documented that hedonic value driven by travel experience quality had a more important role in delivering the effect to memory than utilitarian value. However, in the research model of study 1, satisfaction was not connected to memory. Mediation effect analysis individually tested the partial mediating role of memory in the relationship between hedonic value/utilitarian value/satisfaction and word-of-mouth. Study 2 examined the effects of emotions on memory, particularly the potential moderating effect of arousal on the relationship between valence and memory. This study not only proposed the direct influence of arousal and valence on memory, but also hypothesized the quasi-moderating effect of arousal in amplifying the influence of valence on increasing memory. The results of hierarchical regression analysis using the dataset of 375 samples presented the direct relationships between arousal/valence and memory were shown although the hypothesis regarding the moderating role of arousal was rejected. Two emotional dimensions (arousal and valence) were found to be significant predictors of increased memory quality, but the moderating effect of arousal was not supported. Based on the findings of this study, practical implications for the tourism industry are provided, along with future research ideas.

Studies show that good planning reduces operating coasts and costs for change and additional work. It means that thoughtful planning becomes a more important factor in reducing waste costs and achieving efficient production and good quality. A tool to achieve this is work preparation. Work preparation is a concept that, through planning, facilitates the performance of an activity. To achieve the desired result and quality, the choice of the performance method, workforce, materials, machines and other tools must be decided in good time before the work begins. The purpose of this graduate project is to make a status analysis of how Peab's work preparations are used in production. Identify errors or deficiencies and to investigate the possibility of streamlining. The objective is to get the work preparation more efficient and to suggest improvements. The study has been made in cooperation with Peab Region middle and the current building projects in Karlstad in spring 2017. It comprises a case study (on/at Talldungen preschool) and an interview study where site managers, supervisors and construction workers have been interviewed. The result shows that Peab has a structured work preparation and that the employees find the toolset useful. Working preparation clarifies requirements and any questions can be resolved before the start of the activity. During the preparation, the construction workers actively participate and can influence the choice of working methods, machines and tools. This results in a positive attitude and is perceived to provide better teamwork. One reoccurring problem is that time for work preparation is not prioritized, which means that the follow-up after a completed activity becomes insufficient and the documentation is often missing. Based on the conclusions drawn from the analysis, education, a bank of experience and also a drawing and instructional station are recommended as arrangements. Peab should be better at informing the employees about the available tools and should also be investing in developing the use of BIM.

Kuriachan, Deepa. "Quality of life experiences of parents of children with autism in Scotland". Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/31260.

Texto completo
Resumen
The purpose of this study was to enter the world of the parents living with a child with autism, wondering what quality of life means for them and whether their engagement with social work services makes any difference to their quality of lives. Understanding the quality of life experiences of the parents of children with autism is relevant for policy making and social work practice. Based in a Scottish context, the objectives for this research were as follows: To explore the parent carers' description of the term quality of life To describe the parent carers' views on their quality of life in the context of the services provided by social services within (departments of) local authorities. To understand the systems, processes and procedures put in place by the local authorities to support parent carers To explore the scope for changes, if any, in the present social work approach in order to enhance the quality of life of parent carers. The study adopted a grounded theory methodology informed by a symbolic interactionist theoretical framework. Data were gathered from three study local authorities in Scotland. The participants include an almost equal number of male and female parents (total parent participants = 23); and social workers and operational managers from three study local authorities (total number of social workers =12, total number of operational managers =3). This study utilised focus groups and semi structured interviews to gather data. Using the constant comparison method, three main categories emerged; namely 'new normal', 'on-going burden' and 'limited help' which contextualised the quality of life experiences of parent participants in the study. Oppression emerged as the overarching theory. Drawing on the parental perspectives on quality of life distilled in this study, the implications for further research, professional practice and education are explored.

Andersson, Ann-Christine. "Quality Improvement in Healthcare : Experiences from a Swedish County Council Initiative". Doctoral thesis, Linköpings universitet, Kvalitetsteknik, 2013. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-91255.

Texto completo
Resumen
Quality improvement (QI) has become an important issue in healthcare settings. A central question for many healthcare systems is how to manage improvement initiatives adequately. All county councils and regions managing healthcare in Sweden have started to work with QI at an organizational system level, to varied extents. The Kalmar county council improvement initiative constitutes the empirical basis of this thesis. The aim of the thesis is to provide knowledge about different aspects of a county-wide improvement initiative, and a broader understanding of factors and strategies that affect participation, management and outcomes. The overall study design is based on a case study. The first two studies illuminate the practice-based (micro level), bottom-up perspective. Inductively five different areas (categories) were identified. Factors influencing participation in improvement initiatives provided the basis for the next study. The result showed that different staff categories were attracted by different initiatives. The next two studies illuminate the top-down (macro/meso) management perspective. Managers’ views of how patients can participate were investigated and a content analysis of the written answers was made. Four main areas (categories) were identified. A survey study investigated all of the county council managers’ experiences of the whole improvement initiative. Overall the managers thought that the improvement work was worth the effort. To evaluate the Breakthrough Collaborative program, a survey was developed and tested. This survey was used to investigate process and outcome of the BC program. The majority of the respondents were satisfied with their work, but wanted more time for teams to meet and work. To find out if an improvement program can affect outcome and contribute to sustainable changes, interviews were made with project applicants (n=202). Almost half (48%) of the projects were funded, and of those 51% were sustained. Of the rejected (not funded) projects, 28% were accomplished and sustained anyway. The results in this thesis cannot show that the “golden mean” exists, or that a single best way to manage changes and improvements in a healthcare organization has been found, but the way QI initiatives are organized does affect participation and outcomes. The intention, from the management topdown system level, encouraging staff and units and letting practice-based ideas develop at all system levels, can stimulate and facilitate improvement work.

Texto completo
Resumen
This thesis investigates human product interaction with a focus on the physical experience provided by products. The differences of users'
perceptions are discussed according to the differences of bodily experiences served by products. The interaction with products is taken as a holistic experience phenomenon, and in order to assess users'
understandings and evaluations about the experience with products
perceived pragmatic qualities, perceived hedonic qualities and elicited emotional reactions are analyzed. The research is conducted by means of surveys in order to compare users'
perceptual differences in relation to two different product groups: automobiles and the iPhone, which differ in content of interaction, namely one serves a more physical (bodily) experience while the other a more virtual one. In order to find out the perceptual differences, verbal descriptions of perceived qualities and emotional states are used as measurement tools. A list consisting of bipolar word pairs in relation with pragmatic qualities, hedonic qualities and emotional reactions has been composed, and perceptual differences are investigated through the bipolar word pairs'
relevancy levels according to the product. In addition, in order to show that meaning associations related to the same verbal description are context dependent, the meanings that are associated with the same word pairs for both products are investigated. Apparent differences between the relevant word pairs of the two different product groups have been observed, in addition with pragmatic qualities'
higher relevancy scores compared to hedonic qualities and emotional reactions in defining users'
interactions with products.

The purpose of this study was to describe how women with work-related hand eczema perceive their quality of life. The study has a descriptive design with an inductive approach and qualitative research interview as a method. The interviews were conducted by a strategic choice and themed issius. The analysis was conducted with content analysis accored Graneheim & Lundman, (2004), on the manifest and latent level and resulted in an overall theme with the five underlying categories. These consist of: Women`s perceptions of quality of life, Women`s experience of maintaining quality of life, Women`s experience of hand eczema physical impact on the quality of life and Women`s experience of managing the impact on quality of life. The results show that living with hand eczema was seen as a restriction in women with occupational hand eczema. It has affected the quality of life negatively was the restriction of hand eczema leads. The limitations that women experienced were the effect on hand function, which led to restrictions that make it difficult to take in things. The women also felt that it was painful to work with hand eczema and the work exacerbated the symtoms. Limitations included a psychological impact of hand eczema, wich spoke of the inner feelings of irritation, frustration, shame or feelings of anxiety and fear, and thougts on how other people perceive hand eczema. It has affected the quality of life positively, they were good relationships, good work and enriching leisure time that the women felt that they had. The women managed their problems by fighting and the perceived limitations of hand eczema were handled by not seeing them as an obstacle. The conclusion is that the clinical be´nefit of this study is that increaséd knowledge and understanding of the concept of quality of life can create new strategies to assist individuals with work-related hand eczema, and through this reduce the risk of long-term psychosocial disability.

The purpose of this study is to explore how the users experience the contact with the social allowance office. The authors investigate how the users experience the quality, the treatment, the service and the information from the social worker. A qualitative research method was used and interviews with users were performed to draught answers to the purpose of the study. Everyone who had applied for social allowance in the month of October in the community of Fagersta received a letter with an inquiry about participant in an interview. Six users choose to participant, two women and four men in the ages 24-40. An interview was carried out with a social worker to get another perspective on the results. The result showed that the respondents overall is pleased with the social allowance. However there was dissatisfaction regarding the information that several respondents thought was inadequate. In the result it also came to light that the respondents meet the social worker just a few times and that the communication between them both often happens by phone calls but especially through application forms and the respondents there for have it difficult to give comments about how they were received. All respondents have gotten information about that appeal can be lodged but none of them know what an individual workplan is.

Resumen
In recent years, a growing body of research has examined the issue of work–life balance (WLB). WLB initiatives have been developed by organisations, not only to aid employees in leading healthier and more satisfying lives, but to attract and retain talent. One area where WLB issues have not been examined in detail is from the perspective of Chinese immigrant women. As one of the largest and growing Asian ethnic groups, the WLB issues faced by Chinese women are especially worthy of being examined and addressed. The primary purpose of this research was to explore the WLB experience of Chinese women in administrative roles at Auckland University of Technology (AUT). It also aims to contribute to the body of knowledge on WLB issues for minority ethnic groups and investigated Chinese women’s coping strategies for integrating work with their non-work roles. An exploratory qualitative case study approach was adopted for this study in order to compare and contrast organisational initiatives and policies for WLB with women’s experiences. A triangulated research design was also employed to glean qualitative data by virtue of multiple methods including archival evidence such as publicly available documentation, secondary research on WLB and AUT’s WLB policies, and semi-structured interviews. This study involved 12 Chinese female administrative staff and three staff members from the Human Resource Department (HRD), the Asian Staff Network (ASN) and the AUT Branch of Tertiary Institutes Allied Staff Association (TIASA). Participants were recruited by utilising sources such as the Asian Staff Network (ASN) and the researcher’s network of contacts within AUT. The findings of the study indicated that Chinese women’s WLB experience and ways of handling work–family conflict (WFC) and family–work conflict (FWC) were affected by their experiences of immigration and cultural backgrounds. In particular, their family situation had a critical influence on the way they organised their households and arranged for childcare or eldercare. Child/elder care responsibilities, personal/family emergencies, and personal/individual sacrifice engendered tensions around their ability to integrate WLB. In addition, work factors such as heavy workloads, meeting deadlines, and working longer hours, and cultural barriers caused emotional stress and physical consequences. While informal support from managers and colleagues and the WLB policies offered by the university helped women address their WLB issues, some policies were underutilised. A variety of coping strategies such as family members, win-lose strategies, time management, building clear boundaries, changing mindsets, and demonstrating commitment were actively adopted by Chinese women as mechanisms to cope with tensions between their work and family lives. The implications of these findings are discussed in light of the theory and practice of WLB.

Resumen
Magister Scientiae (Occupational Therapy) - MSc(OT)
An estimate of 89 000 cases of new traumatic brain injuries (TBI) are reported annually in South Africa. South African legislation advocates for the employment of persons with a disability. Individuals with mild-moderate TBI that do qualify to return-to-work (RTW) often do not have access to vocational rehabilitation (VR) and, as a result, return to the occupational therapy work assessment units for Disability Grant assessments. Not having the necessary insight and understanding about the condition influences the affected individual’s chances of returning to work. Failing to return to work results in dependency on a caregiver. The aim of this study was to explore the perceptions and experiences of employers and caregivers of individuals with mild traumatic brain injury returning to work after completing a VR programme, using the Model of Occupational Self-Efficacy. A purposive sample comprising employers and caregivers of 10 individuals with mild TBI was selected. Semi-structured interviews were completed and data manually managed, with confidentiality and anonymity strictly ensured. The findings of the study were analysed by means of thematic analysis, from which five themes emerged. Themes one and two described the employers’ and caregivers’ experiences and perceptions that hindered the RTW process. Theme three related to the enabling aspects they derived from engaging in the VR process, along with the individual with mild-moderate TBI. Themes four and five presented the coping strategies that aided the employer and caregiver in playing a continued role in the RTW process. The International Classification of Function, Disability and Health (ICF) was used to conceptualise the findings and interpret the perspective of the barriers, enablers and coping strategies as seen through the lens of the employer and caregiver. The results of the study can be used to help individuals with TBI adapt to the work environment, as well as inform policy development regarding social grants and access to rehabilitation services for TBI survivors. Occupational therapists (OT) using the MoOSE should regard the employer and caregiver as key role players during therapy. Employers should gain a better understanding of TBI and allow for sick leave during rehabilitation. Caregivers would benefit from finding or establishing a support network for themselves, and by connecting with employers of the individual with TBI in order to understand the individual’s work environment.

Resumen
WeChat is a widely used multi-functional social media platform in China. The increasing number of WeChat users provides new possibilities and challenges for company marketing strategy. We draw literature from word-of-mouth (WOM) and e-service quality (e-SQ). Qualitive study approach was conducted, and ten interviews done with Chinese consumers with shopping experience on WeChat. This thesis aims to explore the purchasing experience of Chinese consumers on WeChat, and specifically we want to understand how do WOM/ eWOM influences Chinese consumers on their shopping experience on WeChat, and what aspect of the e-SQ may affect Chinese consumers’ shopping experience on WeChat. The results reveal that in the brand awareness period, people are more likely to be influenced by WOM to notice products or services. Furthermore, offline WOM has more influential persuading power than online WOM. In terms of e-service quality, the professionalism and convenience of website design is the foundation of consumer purchase. Fulfillment and security perform quite well on WeChat according to our research findings. At the same time, consumers on WeChat are inclined to buy products with less need of customer service.

Resumen
This study investigated the experiences of the Development Support Group (DGS) when implementing the IQMS (Integrated Quality Management System) in Butterworth District of the Eastern Cape. The aim of the study was to explore the experiences of the DSG when implementing the IQMS in an attempt to determine whether the DSG can cope with the task of being part of evaluation in education, and how the negative experiences could be improved. In order to get the experiences of the DSG when implementing the IQMS, the researcher embarked on this phenomenological study. Data were collected by means of one-on-one semi-structured interviews and the perusal of the IQMS document, Resolution 8 of 2003. Responses from the participants were tape-recorded and eventually transcribed, analyzed and interpreted. The main feature revealed by the study is gross lack of confidence, feeling of insecurity and ambivalence on the part of the DSG. On the basis of the findings, recommendations that will assist the DSG (and other IQMS implementers) to improve IQMS implementation, have been made. This study also serves as the voice of the DSG for they have also made suggestions to improve on the negative experiences they have highlighted. The conclusions arrived at in this study are specific to the DSG of the sampled schools. The conclusions reflect and explain the challenges faced by the DSG in Butterworth district. But the findings give a reflective explanatory depth to the experiences the DSG when implementing the IQMS.

The problem with the concept of proven experience is that there are no concrete guidelines or explanations about how the work should be done based on proven experience. The purpose of the study is to create an understanding of how preschool teachers perceive the work with proven experience in the preschool's activities. In order to get answers to the questions for the studies purpose, a qualitative study has been made based on the phenomenographic perspective. The method used in the study is a qualitative online survey, which 18 preschool teachers chose to participate in. The result revealed several different perceptions about how the work with proven experience takes place in the preschool's activities. It emerged that there are similarities and differences in how preschool teachers perceive the work with proven experience. Based on phenomenography, there is no right or wrong in how individuals perceive a phenomenon and the purpose of the study isn´t to find answers to the extent that something is right or wrong. But as previously mentioned, the study is made in order to gain an understanding of how preschool teachers perceive the work with proven experience. The results revealed perceptions of the significance of proven experience, what tools are used and what development opportunities there is in relation to proven experience. The study can´t draw any general conclusions, but the results show that there is a great variety of working methods in relation to proven experience. Finally, the results are discussed in relation to previous research, literature and in relation to phenomenography.

Wåhlin, Ingrid. "The circle of strength and power : Experiences of empowerment in intensive care". Doctoral thesis, Linköpings universitet, Omvårdnad, 2009. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-17732.

Resumen
Patients and next of kin in intensive care often experience powerlessness, anxiety and distress and intensive care staff are repeatedly exposed to traumatic situations and demanding events. Empowerment has been described as a process of overcoming a sense of powerlessness and a model through which people may develop a sense of inner strength through connections with others. The aim of this thesis was to describe empowerment as experienced by patients, next of kin and staff in intensive care and to compare patient's experiences with staff and next of kin beliefs. Empowerment is reflected in this thesis as experiences of inner strength and power and of participation/self-determination. The study was based on open-ended interviews with 11 patients, 12 next of kin and 12 staff members from two intensive care units in southern Sweden. A phenomenological perspective was applied in three studies, while a qualitative content analysis was used in the forth study. Findings showed that nourishing relationships were of crucial importance, and contributed to every participant's experiences of empowerment regardless of whether he/she was an intensive care patient, a next of kin or a staff member. Patients were found to be strengthened and empowered by a positive environment where their own inherent joy of life and will to fight was stimulated, where they felt safe and a sense of value and motivation were encouraged and where they were taken seriously and listened to. Next of kin were extremely important to patients' experiences of safety, value, human warmth and motivation, and patients were strengthened when their next of kin were acknowledge and welcomed by staff. Next of kin in intensive care were strengthened and empowered by a caring atmosphere in which they received continuous, straightforward and honest information that left room for some hope and in which closeness to the patient was facilitated and medical care was experienced as the best possible. Some informants were also empowered by family support and/or participation in caring for the patient. Intensive care staff were empowered by both internal processes such as feelings of doing good, increased self-esteem/self-confidence and increased knowledge and skills, and by external processes such as nourishing meetings, excitement and challenge, well functioning teamwork and good atmosphere. When comparing patient experiences with staff and next of kin beliefs, there was agreement regarding joy of life and will to fight being essential to patients' experiences of inner strength and power, but staff and next of kin seemed to see this as a more constant individual viewpoint or characteristic than the patient did. Next of kin, and especially staff, seemed to regard the patient as more unconscious and unable to participate in the communication and interaction process than the patient him/herself experienced. A mutual and friendly relationship was experienced by the patients as highly empowering, while a more professional relationship was emphasized by the staff. These findings could serve as a basis for reflection about patient, next of kin and staff experiences of strength and power and if empowerment is seen as a dimension in quality of care, the findings from this thesis ought to be taken into consideration to increase the quality of care in intensive care.

Wu, Tianshi. "Essays on learning-by-doing after information systems implementation in developing countries: the case of Costa Rica". Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/52924.

Texto completo
Resumen
Developing countries are increasing their adoption of information systems at the country level now. One important aspect distinguishing the implementation of information systems in developing countries from that in developed countries is that developing countries usually lack the resources and capability for training and support, and the workers need to learn to use the system from their own experience. Thus, a better understanding of the workers’ learning-by-doing after the implementation of an information system in developing countries may have important theoretical and practical implications, but empirical evidence on this issue remains limited. This dissertation seeks to fill in the gap by investigating workers’ learning-by-doing after the implementation of an information system at two levels. First, it studies how an individual customs agent’ experience preparing and submitting customs documents influences her performance in document preparation and submission tasks. Second, it also examines how an agent-inspector dyad’s experience working together affects the performance of customs inspection tasks completed through the cooperation of the dyad. The first chapter provides an overview of the dissertation. The second chapter examines how the relatedness of workers’ prior experience affects their learning-by-doing and operational performance in service work. Prior research has viewed relatedness along a single dimension. However, tasks and the underlying knowledge required for task performance can vary along multiple attributes. This chapter extends prior conceptualizations of relatedness by defining it as a multi-dimensional construct and also accounting for the level of task relatedness between different categories in each task dimension. It separates the level of workers’ experience from the relatedness of their experience, and then link the two constructs to workers’ task performance, including their efficiency and quality. Analyzing data on the processing of 998,258 import customs declarations in Costa Rica from 2006-2010, the second chapter finds that customs agents, the major workers processing the customs declarations, learn from their experience to improve their time to complete the task but not their quality of completion. Moreover, it finds that the relatedness of customs agents’ experience to their current task is positively related to the quality of task completion but has a U-shape relationship with completion time, such that the completion time first decreases with and then increases with an increase in customs agents' experience relatedness. The chapter also finds that the impact of customs agents’ experience relatedness is enhanced when the agents have more experience. Overall, the results highlight the role of experience relatedness in workers’ performance in learning-by-doing service work, and help to identify ways for managers to improve different operational performance measures. Many service tasks are completed by dyads rather than by an individual worker. In this setting, the individuals in the dyad not only need to acquire knowledge about the task, but also have to learn to work with each other. Thus, individuals’ experience working together may have significant performance implications for dyads. However, this effect remains largely unexamined, especially when there are conflicts within the dyad. In the third chapter, it theorizes how a dyad’s experience working together influences the dyad’s task performance, and label it as a learning-by-working-together effect. The chapter further proposes that the impact of dyad experience can vary across tasks with different levels of complexity, goal conflict, and combinations of the two. It examines learning-by-working-together in a setting where there is goal conflict, but the dyad must work together to complete the task: customs inspections. Based on a field study on data of 323,520 customs inspections in Costa Rica, the third chapter shows that the number of prior interactions between a customs agent and a customs inspector is positively associated with the agent-inspector dyad’s efficiency in customs inspection. In addition, it demonstrates that the impact of an agent-inspector dyad’s experience working together is greater for high-complexity tasks than for low-complexity tasks, and weaker for high-conflict tasks than for low-conflict tasks. It also shows that due to a joint effect of task complexity and task-level goal conflict, dyad experience exhibits the largest impact on the performance of high-complexity, high-conflict tasks. The chapter discusses the implications of our results for the study of learning curves and for the practice.

Sparks, Elise Eskew. "Toward an Integrated Theory of Musical Worth and Pedagogical Value: An Analysis of Commissioned Choral Works and Personal Perspectives of Emma Lou Diemer and Alice Parker". Digital Archive @ GSU, 2010. http://digitalarchive.gsu.edu/msit_diss/54.

Texto completo
Resumen
Repertoire comprises the curriculum of school music ensembles, yet its selection by music educators is unsystematic, commonly influenced by publishers, and lacking in thoughtful critique (Budiansky, 2005; Forbes, 2001). Research reports that musical worth and pedagogical value are foremost criteria in repertoire selection (Devore, 1989; Ostling, 1978). This ethnographic research explored relationships between musical worth and pedagogical value in works and perspectives of Emma Lou Diemer and Alice Parker, two prominent female composers whose extensive catalogs include music written for educational settings. Data were collected via methods consistent with qualitative inquiry. Smith’s (2003) Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis was employed to facilitate co-construction of the composers’ lived experience through personal interviews. Data analysis also incorporated previous texts written about and by the composers, and three choral works of each composer. In this study, Panofsky’s (1972) method of visual art analysis was applied to musical analysis. Findings were presented within single-case and cross-case narratives. Although the composers’ work and perspectives are distinctive, their perceptions of musical worth and pedagogical value transcend their individual qualities. Criteria for creating art for educational settings include: using text as a basis for creating musical meaning, recognizing and emulating the work of composers that they find exceptional; and engaging in an artful, synergistic treatment of musical elements. Diemer and Parker share the belief that longevity, originality, expressivity, and sustained interest are characteristics of music of worth. They offered authentic engagement, holistic learning, and matching skill with challenge as integral aspects of pedagogical value. The motivation that compels Diemer and Parker to compose is both external and internal, and is more oriented toward process than product. In creating works for educational settings, they internalize parameters applicable to specific learners and settings. A “spark” they experience in the creative process indicates the origin of musical worth. Pedagogy derived from and integral to the musical worth of a work allows musically engaged students to recreate the “spark” and thus realize pedagogical value. Within the works and perspectives of Diemer and Parker, musical worth and pedagogical value become unified as a composite whole, though the “spark” is realized in a cyclic process.

The first time in working life can be experienced as challenging for the newly graduated nurse. Resumen
Background Established in 1999, the Swedish Maternal Health Care Register (MHCR), collects data on pregnant women and their offspring. Since 2013, the MHCR has been a part of the Swedish Pregnancy Register (SPR). Data are entered manually into the MHCR by midwives in antenatal care (ANC). ANC is primarily organised within public primary health care in Sweden. Midwives are the primary providers of health care during pregnancy, and they are responsible for providing information about prenatal diagnosis to expecting parents. Aims This thesis investigated internal validity of MHCR data, and user’s experiences of the MHCR. Prenatal diagnosis was explored in regard to local guidelines and to background characteristics and pregnancy outcomes. Factors affecting the work situation for midwives in ANC, as well as their experiences on informing expecting parents about prenatal diagnosis were investigated. Methods Study I, II and III were cross-sectional studies. Study I included data from MHCR and medical records on 878 pregnancies during 2011. Study III analysed data from MHCR/SPR, in total 284,789 pregnancies for 2011 to 2013. Study II was a questionnaire study with a quantitative and a qualitative component, including 989 participants. Study IV was a qualitative study applying qualitative content analysis. Fifteen midwives participated in individual, telephone interviews. Main findings Overall, the degree of coverage of variables was high in the MHCR as well as in the medical records. For 17 of the 27 variables, agreement of data in both data sources reached 95% or more. Possible systematic errors were identified for two variables (Paper I). Midwives valued MHCR generally positively, although manual registration of data into the MHCR was perceived burdensome. Foremost midwives engaged in supervision regularly accessed data on pregnant women at their own ANC clinic (Paper II). Offers on prenatal diagnosis varied considerably between the 21 Swedish counties during 2011 to 2013. Maternal age and educational level demonstrated strong associations with uptake of prenatal diagnosis (Paper III). Midwives in ANC reported their work load as manageable. Clinical guidelines, continuing education, and collaboration in the chain of care of pregnant women, were supportive factors for midwives work situation in antenatal care. Administrative work load was perceived as strenuous and informing expecting parents about prenatal diagnosis was challenging (Paper IV). Conclusions Data in the MHCR demonstrated sufficient internal validity. MHCR was an underutilised source in operational planning of ANC. Offers and uptake on prenatal diagnosis was unequally distributed in Sweden. Midwives enjoyed their work in ANC. Administrative work was strenuous and informing expecting parents about prenatal diagnosis was challenging. The register can further develop its report systems to be used in a higher extent in evaluation and planning of Swedish maternal health care services. Expecting couples in Sweden should be offered the same opportunities on prenatal diagnosis. Pedagogical tools may facilitate midwives mission to inform expecting parents with varying pre-understanding about prenatal diagnosis
I barnmorskans arbete ingår därutöver olika patientadministrativa uppgifter.

Over the years, there has been an exponential increase in the capabilities of networks, evolving from wired networks to wireless, and finally moving towards 4G networks. This evolution has brought forth many ways in which a user can access any service, particularly accessing the Internet. From emailing and social networking to file transferring, users are on a constant venture to exploit the advantages as much as possible. Predictions show that the demand will only increase with increasing number of mobile devices and subscribers. It becomes clearer that there will be rapid growth in the demand for more energy-efficient mobile devices. However, due to relatively slow increase in the battery technologies, the mobile users' expectations were not being met. This thesis highlights few interesting points on the energy consumptions by the most common Internet browsing tasks. It then presents the measurements of energy consumption on using various network connection technologies namely Ethernet, Wi-Fi and 3G to access the Internet. The obtained data from the experiments were then analyzed to arrive at an idea on the difference in energy consumptions across various browsing tasks and access technologies. Later, it involves a survey through which critical observations with respect to power efficiency and QoE are collected. The study concludes with a picture that would help users have an insight on the technologies that they may wish to choose to connect to the Internet. It helps manufacturers understand and consider the affect of an interface on the power consumption. It also helps researchers bring better solutions of designing the network interfaces. The aim would be to reduce the energy consumption by the product components rather than struggling to design powerful batteries to meet the increasing power demands from the network components. A wise choice of networking technologies is or what is may be required to gain better energy efficiency.

Resumen
Multimedia presentations of digital media services and devices are meant for human consumption and interaction. Before consumption by the user, the multimedia signal usually goes through several processing stages. Depending on the technologies, including the applied signal processing algorithms, some stages can introduce artefacts that reduce the quality of the multimedia presentation. Quality is a fundamental aspect for the design of any end-to-end multimedia signal processing architecture. A sufficiently high quality level of any multimedia presentations must be provided to the user to ensure her optimal experience. More recently, we have seen a shift of paradigm towards incorporating the user as the most important factor in the quality assessment of multimedia presentations. This shift of paradigm drives the creation of the Quality of Experience (QoE) concept. QoE depends on the user perception making it a qualitative assessment as opposed to a purely quantitative one. The definite way of assessing perception of user is by conducting a perception experiment involving human participants in a controlled environment, and this experiment must be carefully designed. Subjective quality assessment is one example of such experiment. There is another, more practical way of assessing quality from user standpoint; this utilizes perceptual-based metrics that model the human perception as closely as possible. Due to the array of current applications, it is unlikely to have a universal quality metric for assessing QoE of multimedia applications. This thesis will only focus on QoE for Digital Cinema presentations. The thesis is composed of a paper collection; were we have classified the work in this thesis based on research questions within three main themes: QoE of still images for Digital Cinema presentation1, QoE of motion pictures for Digital Cinema presentation, and QoE of audiovisual presentation for Digital Cinema. In the field of QoE of images for Digital Cinema presentations, we conducted subjective image quality assessments for Digital Cinema using a methodology derived from standardized recommendations. During the assessment we collected subjective scores of the perceived image quality in a real Digital Cinema environment. We also conducted another perceptual experiment in a Digital Cinema to obtain the parameters of Multi Scale Structural Similarity (MS-SSIM) objective metric for Digital Cinema presentation. Moreover, we analysed the performance of several objective metrics including MS-SSIM with original parameters and parameters obtained from our experiment in the Digital Cinema. The results show that in the case of Digital Cinema, MS-SSIM does not exhibit the same type of performance that has been reported in the literature, when compared to PSNR metric. I n the field of QoE of motion pictures for Digital Cinema presentations, we conducted subjective motion pictures quality assessment for Digital Cinema using a careful designed experiment, which is also derived from standardized recommendations. The collected subjective data is used to analyse the performance of two compression algorithms (JPEG 2000 and AVC/H.264) for a Digital Cinema environment; the results showed that temporal compression schemes like H.264/AVC have high coding efficiency not only at SD resolutions, but also at high resolutions for Digital Cinema presentation. Furthermore, we performed an analysis on factors that affect visual perceived quality in a Digital Cinema using collected scores from the subjective still images and motion pictures quality assessment. In the field of QoE of audiovisual presentation for Digital Cinema, we performed subjective experiments of audiovisual contents for Digital Cinema using also methodology derived from standardized recommendations. In addition, we investigated the multimodal effect on perceived quality in a Digital Cinema environment. A major result of our subjective visual quality assessment showed that the presence of audio (low or high quality) does not influence the visual quality judgment

Resumen
The recent years have observed a tremendous shift from the technology-centric assessment to the user-centric assessment of network services. Consequently, measurement and modelling of Quality of Experience (QoE) attracted many contributions from researchers and practitioners. Generally, QoE is assessed via active and passive measurements. While the former usually allows QoE assessment on the test traffic, the latter opens avenues for continuous QoE assessment on the real traffic generated by the users. This thesis contributes towards passive assessment of QoE. This thesis document begins with a background on the fundamentals of network management and objective QoE assessment. It extends the discussion further to the QoE-centric monitoring and management of network, complimented by the details about QoE estimator agent developed within the Celtic project QuEEN (Quality of Experience Estimators in Network). The discussion on findings starts with results from subjective tests to understand the relationship between waiting times and user subjective feedback over time. These results strengthen the understanding of timescales on which users react, as well as, the effect of user memory on QoE. The findings show that QoE drops significantly when the user faces recurring waiting times of 0.5 s to 4 s durations in case of video streaming and web browsing services. With recurring network disturbances within every 8 s – 16 s time intervals, the user tolerance to waiting times decreases constantly, showing the sign of user memory of recent disturbances. Subsequently, this document introduces and evaluates a passive wavelet-based QoE monitoring method. The method detects timescales on which transient outages occur frequently. A study presents results from qualitative measurements, showing the ability of wavelet to differentiate on-fly between “Good” and “Bad” traffic streams. In sequel, a quantitative study systematically evaluates wavelet-based metrics. Subsequently, the subjective evaluation and wavelet analysis of 5 – 6 minutes long video streaming sessions on mobile networks show that wavelet-based metrics is indeed useful for passive monitoring of QoE issues. Finally, this thesis investigates a method for passive monitoring of user reactions to degrading network performance. The method is based on the TCP termination flags. With a systematic evaluation in a test environment, the results characterise termination of data transfers in case of different user actions in the web browser.

Resumen
The confluence of miniaturised powerful devices, widespread communication networks and mass remote storage has caused a fundamental shift in the user interaction design paradigm. The distinction between system and user in pervasive environments is evolving into an increasingly integrated loop of interaction, raising a number of opportunities to provide enhanced and personalised experiences. We propose a platform, based on a smart architecture, to address the identified opportunities in pervasive computing. Smart systems aim at acting upon an environment for improving quality of experience: a subjective measure that has been defined as an emotional reaction to products or services. The inclusion of an emotional dimension allows us to measure individual user responses and deliver personalised services with the potential to influence experiences positively. The platform, Cloud2Bubble, leverages pervasive systems to aggregate user and environment data with the goal of addressing personal preferences and supra-functional requirements. This, combined with its societal implications, results in a set of design principles as a concrete fruition of design contractualism. In particular, this thesis describes: - a review of intelligent ubiquitous environments and relevant technologies, including a definition of user experience as a dynamic affective construct; - a specification of main components for personal data aggregation and service personalisation, without compromising privacy, security or usability; - the implementation of a software platform and a methodological procedure for its instantiation; - an evaluation of the developed platform and its benefits for urban mobility and public transport information systems; - a set of design principles for the design of ubiquitous systems, with an impact on individual experience and collective awareness. Cloud2Bubble contributes towards the development of affective intelligent ubiquitous systems with the potential to enhance user experience in pervasive environments. In addition, the platform aims at minimising the risk of user digital exposure while supporting collective action.

Druda, Luca. "Quality of experience in skype video calls". Master's thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2012. http://amslaurea.unibo.it/4005/.

Resumen
Skype is one of the well-known applications that has guided the evolution of real-time video streaming and has become one of the most used software in everyday life. It provides VoIP audio/video calls as well as messaging chat and file transfer. Many versions are available covering all the principal operating systems like Windows, Macintosh and Linux but also mobile systems. Voice quality decreed Skype success since its birth in 2003 and peer-to-peer architecture has allowed worldwide diffusion. After video call introduction in 2006 Skype became a complete solution to communicate between two or more people. As a primarily video conferencing application, Skype assumes certain characteristics of the delivered video to optimize its perceived quality. However in the last years, and with the recent release of SkypeKit1, many new Skype video-enabled devices came out especially in the mobile world. This forced a change to the traditional recording, streaming and receiving settings allowing for a wide range of network and content dynamics. Video calls are not anymore based on static ‘chatting’ but mobile devices have opened new possibilities and can be used in several scenarios. For instance, lecture streaming or one-to-one mobile video conferences exhibit more dynamics as both caller and callee might be on move. Most of these cases are different from “head&shoulder” only content. Therefore, Skype needs to optimize its video streaming engine to cover more video types. Heterogeneous connections require different behaviors and solutions and Skype must face with this variety to maintain a certain quality independently from connection used. Part of the present work will be focused on analyzing Skype behavior depending on video content. Since Skype protocol is proprietary most of the studies so far have tried to characterize its traffic and to reverse engineer its protocol. However, questions related to the behavior of Skype, especially on quality as perceived by users, remain unanswered. We will study Skype video codecs capabilities and video quality assessment. Another motivation of our work is the design of a mechanism that estimates the perceived cost of network conditions on Skype video delivery. To this extent we will try to assess in an objective way the impact of network impairments on the perceived quality of a Skype video call. Traditional video streaming schemes lack the necessary flexibility and adaptivity that Skype tries to achieve at the edge of a network. Our contribution will lye on a testbed and consequent objective video quality analysis that we will carry out on input videos. We will stream raw video files with Skype via an impaired channel and then we will record it at the receiver side to analyze with objective quality of experience metrics.

With the network heterogeneity and increasing demand of multimedia services, Quality of Experience (QoE) becomes a crucial determinant of the success or failure of these services. In this thesis, we first propose to analyze the impact of quality metrics on user engagement, in order to understand the effects of video metrics (video startup time, average bitrate, buffering ratio) and content popularity on user engagement. Our results show that video buffering and content popularity are critical parameters which strongly impacts the end-user’s satisfaction and user engagement, while the video startup time appears as less significant. On other hand, we consider subjective approaches such as the Mean Opinion Score (MOS) for evaluating QoE, in which users are required to give their assessment according to contextual information. A detailed statistical analysis of our study shows the existence of non-trivial parameters impacting MOS (the type of device and the content type). We propose mathematical models to develop functional relationships between the QoE and the context information which in turn permits us to estimate the QoE. A video content optimization technique called MDASH (for MOS Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP) is proposed, which improves the perceived QoE for different video sessions sharing the same local network, while taking QoE fairness among users as a leitmotiv. We also propose a utility-based approach for video delivery optimization, in which a global utility function is computed based on different constraints (e.g. target strategies coming from the actors of the delivery chain)

Resumen
The purpose of this research was to contribute to the literature on migration and settlement work for LGBTQ newcomers and the service providers who support them in Canada. The study employed a descriptive phenomenological research approach to answer the following question: “What are service provider’s perceptions and descriptions of their work in supporting LGBTQ immigrant clients?” Interviews were conducted with twelve service providers working in settlement, social work, and counselling psychology, with experience working with LGBTQ newcomers ranging from fourteen months to twenty five years. Participants represented nine languages and five ethnicities, and worked within the Metro Vancouver region of British Columbia, Canada. Utilising Giorgi’s (2009) descriptive psychological phenomenological method, data analysis uncovered three overarching structures that captured participants’ experiences of settlement work with LGBTQ newcomers. These structures included a) service providers’ perceptions of LGBTQ newcomers’ needs and experience, b) organizational issues, and c) personal impact. This study contributes to a greater understanding of the ways in which settlement work is done with LGBTQ newcomers, and sheds light on factors that are both challenging and beneficial to their service provision work. Recommendations for further research are made, as well as specific recommendations for training and counselling psychologists working with LGBTQ newcomers.

Resumen
In Western Australia an increasing number of secondary school students participate in work experience programs. Different models of work experience are becoming more common. The Ministry of. Education promotes the use of four such models. The purpose of this study was to examine the outcomes of work experience, as perceived by secondary school students in selected Government Schools, to see if there were any differences according to the model of work experience used. These perceptions were further examined to see if there was a significant difference in perceived outcomes according to other independent variables of student gender, year level, geographic location, duration of work experience or recency of work experience. Data were collected by means of a questionnaire. Students completing work experience in the survey period in responding government secondary schools with appointed Youth Education Officers were asked to complete the questionnaire using a Likert Scale of attitude response. The results of the questionnaire were analyzed using multiple analysis of variance. This gave an objective measure of the extent of achievement, as well as indicating any significant differences according to the independent variable examined. The study concluded that work experience produces positive outcomes in areas related to the employability, career choice, educational attitude and social development of students.

Resumen
The job of the clinical psychologist has been described as that of the 'scientist-practitioner', giving the impression that, in broad terms, it involves the practical application of psychological knowledge in a clinical setting. This study commences by critically examining the values of the 'science' and of the 'practice' involved, and reviewing the available literature on the religious values of clinical psychologists, prior to reporting an empirical investigation of the connections drawn by a group of Christian clinical psychologists working within the UK National Health Service, between their work, their professional values, and their religious commitment. The data on these values connections were gathered in an oblique rather than a direct fashion: the fourteen psychologists who participated, completed a repertory grid which measured their construing of situations at work in which they were highly conscious of their religious commitment. In a semi-stuctured interview, they spoke freely and personally about their understanding of the particular groupings of 'constructs' and 'elements' identified statistically by factoring the grid ratings.Five main themes emerged from a grounded theory qualitative analysis of the interview transcripts. These described workplace issues of enhanced performance and spiritual support; religious disclosure to colleagues, and to clients; value clash; value congruence; and the sense of broader involvement as psychologists who were also members of the Christian community. My overall understanding of what participants said about their grid results, was that these issues might most appropriately be interpreted as dimensions, on which they found themselves occupying variable rather than 'set' positions. Based upon this, I propose a tentative model of the connections between their religious and their work values, as the experience within the workplace, of perpetually shifting positions on the various dimensions identified by the analysis.Consideration is given to the shortcomings and to the implications of the study, and to reflections upon my own involvement as researcher. It is concluded that the status of the results reported, may best be as stimulus for the many lines of further investigation to which they could give rise.

Resumen
This study investigated the relation between interest in four different subject areas (mathematics, biology, English, history) and the quality of experience in class. The strength of interest as a predictor of experience was contrasted with that of achievement motivation and scholastic ability. A total of208 highly able freshmen and sophomores completed interest ratings, an achievement motivation questionnaire, and the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT). These assessments were followed by one week of experience sampling. In addition, grades were available for the subject areas involved. The results showed that interest was a significant predictor of the experience of potency, intrinsic motivation, self-esteem, and perception of skill. Controlling for ability and achievement motivation did not decrease the strength of these relations. Achievement motivation and ability proved to be considerably weaker predictors of the quality of experience than was interest. In addition, interest contributed significantly to the prediction of grades in mathematics, biology, and history, but not English. The main results and some limitations of the study are discussed, and suggestions for future research are made.

Resumen
The recent decade has witnessed an enormous development in internet technology worldwide. Initially internet was designed for applications such as Electronic Mail and File Transfer. With technology evolving and becoming popular, people use internet for e-banking, e-shopping, social networking, e-gaming, voice and a lot of other applications. Most of the internet traffic is generated by activities of end users, when they request a specific webpage or web based application. The high demand for internet applications has driven service operators to provide reliable services to the end user and user satisfaction has now become a major challenge. Quality of Service is a measure of the performance of a particular service. Quality of Experience is a subjective measure of user’s perception of the overall performance of network. The high demand for internet usage in everyday life has got people concerned about security of information over web pages that require authentication. User perceived Quality of Security Experience depends on Quality of Experience and Response Time for web page authentication. Different factors such as jitter, packet loss, delay, network speed, supply chains and the type of security algorithm play a vital role in the response time for authentication. In this work we have tried to do qualitative and quantitative analysis of user perceived security and Quality of Experience with increasing and decreasing Response Times towards a web page authentication. We have tried to derive a relationship between Quality of Experience of security and Response Time.

Yusuf, Lateef. "Improving quality of experience for mobile video streaming". Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/53423.

Resumen
Thanks to their increasing sophistication and popularity, mobile devices, in the form of smartphones and tablets, have become the fastest growing contributors to Internet traffic. Indeed, smartphones are projected to account for 50% of global Internet traffic by 2017, with the share of mobile video increasing to about 40% of total Internet traffic. As users embrace Internet streaming of video, several studies have found that a small decrease in video quality leads to a substantial increase in viewer abandonment and disengagement rates. To handle the explosive growth in video traffic, Adaptive HTTP streaming, which exploits the prevalence of commodity web servers and content distribution networks, has emerged as the key technology for delivering video to end users. Although a number of systems have been proposed for HTTP video streaming in traditional environments and for fixed clients, existing platforms for video streaming on mobile devices are still in their infancy and do not address the additional challenges often experienced by mobile clients: high fluctuations in network conditions, heterogeneous networking interfaces, multiple form-factors, and limited battery life. In this dissertation, we propose a number of solutions for improving the Quality of Experience of HTTP video streaming on mobile devices. We begin by evaluating the performance of several existing video quality adaptation schemes when deployed on mobile platforms. Through experiments with smartphones in wide-area environments, we assemble several key findings. First, we show that the high fluctuations in network throughput on cellular and Wi-Fi networks impose significant challenges for efficiently architecting the video adaptation scheme. Second, we find significant differences between the performance of the current state-of-the-art schemes in controlled experimental settings and their performance in mobile settings on key quality metrics such as inefficiency, instability, rebuffering ratio, and startup latency. We also find noticeable differences in the behavior of the schemes under Wi-Fi and cellular network access, with most of the schemes performing worse when the network access is cellular. Given these observations, we hypothesize on the possible causes of these inefficiencies. We also identify the best practices of existing schemes and key insights from experimental results that can serve as foundations for addressing many of the limitations. Armed with these measurement-driven insights, we propose a novel video quality adaptation scheme, called MASS, which is more robust to the vagaries of the wireless networking conditions. We implement and evaluate our solution on commodity Android smartphones, and demonstrate significant performance gains over existing schemes. To further improve the streaming experience, we introduce an extension to HTTP video streaming that leverages the synergy between social network participation and video streaming to optimize end-user Quality of Experience. Our system, called SDASH, integrates and applies well-known concepts such as cooperative caching, prefetching, and P2P streaming for reducing bitrate fluctuations and optimizing the viewing experience. Finally, we develop a general infrastructure for constructing temporally and spatially localized P2P communities of mobile devices sharing similar interests. The platform enables on-demand cooperation among mobile clients based on device context and client preferences. We use a concrete implementation of the mobile P2P infrastructure for evaluating the performance of SDASH. This dissertation addresses the challenges facing Adaptive HTTP Streaming under mobile networking conditions. Through experimentation with commodity mobile devices, we show that the proposed techniques for bitrate adaptation and cooperative streaming can significantly improve the video viewing experience.

Hamam, Abdelwahab. "Quality of Experience Evaluation for Haptic Multimedia Applications". Thèse, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/25490.

Resumen
Haptic-based Virtual Reality (VR) applications have many merits. What is still obscure, from the designer’s perspective of these applications, is the experience the users will undergo when they use the VR system. Quality of Experience (QoE) is an evaluation metric from the user’s perspective that unfortunately has received limited attention from the research community. Assessing the QoE of VR applications reflects the amount of overall satisfaction and benefits gained from the application in addition to laying the foundation for ideal user-centric design in the future. In this thesis, we address certain issues and concerns regarding QoE of virtual environments. In essence, we propose a taxonomy for the evaluation of the QoE for multimedia applications and in particular VR applications. The taxonomy classifies QoE related parameters into groups. The groups’ organization is generated from the definition we have adopted for the QoE which is the Quality of Service (QoS) plus the user experience (UX). We model this taxonomy using first mathematical modeling based on weighted averages and then a Fuzzy logic Inference System (FIS) to quantitatively measure the QoE of haptic virtual environments. We test both models conducting user study analysis to evaluate the QoE of a VR application. These models serve as engines that facilitate the calculation of QoE with minimal amount of users. We specifically attend to the issue of the new media, haptics, within the context of increasing the QoE of virtual environments (VE). This special attention is important for comparing the effect of tactile and kinesthetic feedback on the QoE. In accordance, we investigate a particular topic that seems to have a colossal effect on QoE throughout our analysis, which is fatigue. Our analysis involved users' studies since the main focus is on the user. The QoE for virtual environments is in its primary stages. This thesis tackles issues that are vital in dealing with and understanding the importance of QoE. The various results suggest a positive user's disposition toward haptics and virtual environments, yet there will always be obstacles and challenges such as fatigue that if minimized will enhance the QoE of haptic-based applications.
