Ce travail vise à préciser l’importance que Silius Italicus donne dans ses Punica au personnage d’Hannibal. Il repose sur une étude comparée entre le poème et les différents textes latins et grecs à notre disposition sur le chef carthaginois. Les intertextes avec les épopées antérieures sont aussi sollicités, car Silius s’en inspire pour créer un Hannibal épique, propre aux Punica.L’Hannibal de Silius se distingue d’abord par son portrait dans l’ensemble de l’épopée : le poète nuance voire efface les défauts que la tradition historiographique attribue au Carthaginois, tandis qu’il en souligne les qualités en recourant en particulier aux topoi épiques. Silius fait également du chef le porteur de motivations et d’enjeux multiples qui le présentent comme le personnage majeur des Punica.Hannibal joue par ailleurs un rôle décisif dans la révélation progressive de la grandeur de Rome. Il constitue un véritable faire-valoir pour les Romains et se révèle le premier témoin du renouveau de Rome : c’est par rapport à lui, mais aussi à travers ses prises de conscience, que le redressement romain s’exprime au cours du poème. Enfin, Silius grandit le personnage d’Hannibal en lui faisant mener bien plus que la deuxième guerre punique : le chef entreprend une guerre titanesque contre les dieux ; il appelle en outre à une continuation du conflit au-delà de l’épopée. Entre réhabilitation et revalorisation, la vision d’Hannibal dans les Punica témoigne donc d’une innovation certaine de la part de Silius Italicus au sein de la tradition ancienne sur le personnage : le Carthaginois, qui fut pourtant l’un des plus féroces ennemis de Rome, y devient véritablement un héros épique
The aim of the author is to clarify the importance that Silius gives in his Punica to the character Hannibal. This work is based on a comparative study between the poem and the different latin and greek texts that we have about the Carthaginian chief. The intertexts with the former epics are also questioned, since Silius draws his inspiration from them to create an epic Hannibal, specific to the Punica.The Silius’ Hannibal can first be distinguished by his portrait in the whole epic : the poet nuances, indeed erases the defects that the historiographical tradition imputes to the Carthaginian, whereas he emphasizes his qualities, in particular by using epic topoi. Silius also portrays the chief as the one who stands for numerous motivations and stakes, which present him as the main character of the Punica.Moreover Hannibal plays a decisive part in the progressive revelation of Rome’s greatness. He serves as a real foil to the Romans and shows himself as the first witness of Rome’s renewal : the Roman recovery expresses itself, during the epic, in comparison to him, but also through his realization of it.Lastly, Silius increases Hannibal’s stature, by making him rule more than the second Punic war : the Carthaginian starts a titanic war against the gods ; he also calls for a continuation of the conflict, beyond the epic.Between rehabilitation and enhancement, the presentation of Hannibal in the Punica shows an undeniable innovation from Silius Italicus within the ancient tradition about the Carthaginian : Hannibal, who was yet one of Rome’s most fierce enemies, truly becomes an epic hero

Si l'univers moral des épopées flaviennes s'inscrit pour l'essentiel dans la continuité de l’Enéide, la conception de l'éthique héroïque qui s'en dégage témoigne d'une évolution spirituelle ainsi que d’une volonté d'émulation littéraire. L'unité thématique des argonautiques repose sur les tribulations d'une communauté héroïque en marche vers l'immortalité promise au mérite, celle des punica sur la résurrection et l'enrichissement de la uirtus romana par l'épreuve du bellum punicum, et celle de la thébaïde sur la destruction d'un héroïsme primitif dans la tragédie de la guerre fratricide avant l'avènement d'un héroïsme épique purifié et rénové incarné par Thésée. Le providentialisme mystique de Virgile, fondé sur la pietas entendue comme adhésion consciente au plan divin, tend à céder la place à une affirmation accrue d'autres valeurs héroïques telles que la gloria, la fides et la iurtus, éventuellement prolongées (chez Silius et plus encore chez Stace) par une aspiration croissante à l'humanitas. L'influence stoïcienne (essentiellement cicéronienne chez Silius, seneco-lucanienne chez Stace et Valerius) explique en partie cette moralisation et cette humanisation croissantes de l'idéal héroïque, dont l'Hercule du portique est le paradigme privilégié. Ce mouvement s'inscrit parfaitement dans le contexte de la restauration morale flavienne, sans pour autant faire de ces épopées des œuvres de propagande
Although the moral system of the flavian epics is for the broadest part indebted to the Aeneid, their heroic ethics give evidence for spiritual evolution and literary emulation. The thematic consistency of the argonautica is founded on the trials of a group of heroes on their way towards immortality as a reward for valor. The punica are centred on the rebirth and improvement of roman iurtus through the trial of the punic war, and the thebaid describes the annihilation of a primitive heroism through the tragedy of fraternal strife, followed by the advent of a new purified heroism embodied by Theseus. Virgil's mystical providentialism, founded on pietas as a conscious fulfilment of divine will, has made the way for a greater stress laid on other values like gloria, fides and uirtus, allied (in Silius and above all in Statius), to a yearning for humanitas. Stoic influency (essentially deriving from Cicero in Silius and from Seneca and Lucan in Statius and Valerius) is partly responsible for this growing moralization and humanization of epic heroism, and the Hercules of the stoa is its most prominent model. This trend is in keeping with the mood of the flavian moral restoration, although political propaganda is obviously not the main purpose of these poems

Le concept de paysage, problématique dans l'antiquité, peut aider à porter un nouveau regard sur la perception et la représentation de l'espace à l'époque flavienne, et plus particulièrement dans les poèmes de Stace et Silius Italicus. Il permet aussi de s'interroger sur les conceptions esthétiques de ces deux auteurs, replaces dans le contexte culturel et artistique de leur époque. A partir de la définition moderne et de la polysémie du mot paysage, nous avons recensé les différentes formes d'apparition de l'espace dans ces poèmes, en termes de description, de fonction et d'interprétation. Cette démarche articule nécessairement trois modalités, le regard, le discours, et le système de signification ; chacune a ses propres codes et obéit à des conventions. Sur ces bases, nous avons cherché à définir un univers imaginaire et esthétique particulier, de mettre en relief les coïncidences entre une vision, un imaginaire et une écriture, selon la figure récurrente du reflet. La "déconstruction" des perspectives et la mise à distance du naturalisme, dans une recherche artistique que l'on pourrait qualifier de maniériste, s'observent alors. Le paysage se fait ainsi expression symbolique d'un rapport à l'espace qui a changé à l'époque flavienne, mais aussi d'une esthétique ou se révèlent les inquiétudes du siècle
The concept of landscape, which is not obvious in antiquity, makes possible a new consideration on the perception and representation of space in the Flavian times, and particularly in Statius and Silius Italicus' poems. It also allows raising the question of the aesthetic conceptions of the two poets, in the general artistic context of the period. On the basis of the modern definition of landscape and of its numerous significations, we have considered the different forms of representation of space in these poems, in terms of description, function, and interpretation. This process necessarily links three points: sight, discourse, and the system of signification; each has its own codes and conventions. We based on these observations the definition of a particular imaginary and aesthetic universe, and so we tried to show how could converge vision, imagination, and poetics. We can remark that perspective and naturalism are "de-constructed", in a constant artistic quest, as in mannerism. Landscape is then a symbolic expression of a conception of space, which changed in the Flavian times, and of aesthetics, which reveals the uncertainties of the time

Notre travail c'est attaché à montrer les liens profonds qui unissent les auteurs antiques, au delà des frontières génériques instaurées. Pour les mettre en valeur, nous avons considéré le traitement réservé à un même personnage (Hannibal) et ce par deux genres littéraires différents (historiographie et poésie épique). Cela nous a permis d'établir des constantes transgénériques articulées autour d’axes majeurs, thématiques (univers guerrier ou non) et grammaticaux (longueur ; pronoms…) considérés stylistiquement. C’est ainsi que Tite-Live se fait poète dans son portrait d’Hannibal cédant aux topoi de l’étranger. Loin de stigmatiser des procédés particuliers et exclusifs, nos résultats montrent l'interdépendance des genres, leur complémentarité et leur enrichissement mutuel. Les écrivains, tels des orfèvres, cisèlent leur matière première pour susciter admiration et adhésion
Our aim was to show deep relations between antic writers, above generic frontiers. In order to highlight them, we have observed how a same figure had been treated (Hannibal), and this by two different litterary genres (historiography and epic poetry). It allowed us to state transgeneric features, with two main parts : thematic (warrior world or not) and grammatical (narration, speech) stylistically developed. So, Livy becomes a poetry with his Hanniba's figure with his topoi of stranger. Our results point out, not particulars and exclusive ways, but generic interdependance, their complementarity and their mutual enrichment. This thesis is a detailed commentary on the eighth book of Silius Italicus’ epic poem the Punica, lines 1-241. The text that is discussed includes the encounter, engineered by Juno, between Hannibal and the Italian nymph, Anna Perenna. The commentary follows the model of the Cambridge ‘Green and Yellow’ series and the notes mainly deal with philological and literary issues, especially those arising from the dense inter-textuality of lines 50-201 which draw heavily on Ovid’s Fasti 3. 523-656 and the Aeneid 4.393-692. The commentary proper is prefaced by an introduction that considers: (1) the nature of classical commentary as a genre; (2) the significance of the selected text in the context of the poem as a whole; (3) the disputed authenticity of 8.144-223 (the so-called Aldine additamentum). In this third part of the introduction the metrical, stylistic and linguistic differences that exist between the text of the additamentum and the rest of Punica 8 are explored and analysed, and consideration is given to the likelihood of its authorship by an Italian Humanist. The text of the Punica used is the Teubner (1987) edition of Josef Delz.
