Different reports on the efficacy of electroacupuncture in pain led to a randomized prospective study on 120 patients suffering from long-term chronic pain syndromes of different aetiology taking into account the psycholgical situation. The collected data included measuring the pulse amplitude difference of the arteria radialis dextra and sinistra oscillographically, pain evaluation by visual analogue scales, blood pressure and heart frequency and psychometrie. Results show that neurotic patients have a higher level of anxiety and that reduction of pain and the equalization of the amplitudes of both arterial curves is higher in anxious patients. The results are highly significant with an α value of 0.001.

BDI-II) verglichen.

This practical paper is based on a skills session as delivered at the first International Coaching Psychology Conference held in 2006. It commences by discussing the use of psychometrics in general by emphasising the four psychometric principles as hallmarks of a good test; and outlining some of the advantages and potential limitations of psychometrics. In this paper a contemporary instrument, the Saville Consulting Wave®is introduced and its application is discussed in relation to coaching, with particular reference to a performance coaching context at work. It is concluded that no psychometric test is a panacea for each and every situation, but that skilful use greatly enhances the coaching process.

Resumen
AbstractIn this article, we present the findings of an oral history project on the past, present, and future of psychometrics, as obtained through structured interviews with twenty past Psychometric Society presidents. Perspectives on how psychometrics should be practiced vary strongly. Some presidents are psychology-oriented, whereas others have a more mathematical or statistical approach. The originally strong relationship between psychometrics and psychology has weakened, and contemporary psychometrics has become a diverse and multifaceted discipline. The presidents are confident psychometrics will continue to be relevant but believe psychometrics needs to become better at selling its strong points to relevant research areas. We recommend for psychometrics to cherish its plurality and make its goals and priorities explicit.

Purpose: To demonstrate the rationale for using psychometric tests in accounting research and show the spectrum of possibilities for such research in the context of skepticism towards them in Polish academia. Methodology/approach: Deduction and a scoping literature review. Findings: We confirm that personality traits and states of the human mind affect the accounting process, and psychometrics is a field with strong theoretical foundations and well-developed empirical tools. This means that the use of psychometric tests in accounting research indisputably makes sense. Thereby, the skepticism towards psychometric research in accounting in Polish academic accounting society is questioned. Originality/value: We conducted an extensive review of the accounting research that used psychometric tests. We demonstrate the rationale for the use of psychometric testing in accounting.

Resumen
We systematically reviewed studies reporting the use of the Children’s Depression Inventory-2 (CDI-2) in samples with at least 30 children and significant Hispanics enrollment (≥14.5% of the sample and at least 20 Hispanics completing the scale). We grouped studies by form (short or full-length) and language used, developmental stage, report of psychometric data (particularly for Hispanics), and other characteristics. From 252 full-texts revised, 22 met selection criteria. Six reported psychometric data for Hispanics, either for the English full-length (α = .86–.92) and short form (α = .76–.81) or for the Spanish short form (α = .69–.80). Criterion-related validity was supported via correlation/regression or comparing group means, but not using another depression self-report scale. Current knowledge on the CDI-2 psychometrics among Hispanics is mostly based on studies with the English-language version. No study has reported the psychometrics of the full-length Spanish-language CDI-2 with Hispanics.

Resumen
Psychometric test construction and validation has come a long way in the past few decades. With the development of modern approaches to testing and applications of statistical softwares, this field of research has become highly sophisticated and enriched. The Indian scenario is however, a little different, pertaining to the acceptability of modern psychometric methods and their use in test development and validation. Although several new tests and questionnaires are being developed or validated in local cultural contexts, Indian researchers are yet to reach the state where psychometric test development and validation becomes a usual practice. Building a common platform for exchange of knowledge and expertise in psychometrics is highly recommended in order to facilitate such practices at a greater extent.

Resumen
This essay focuses on the history of psychometry, the science of soul measuring. For its founder, Dr Joseph Rodes Buchanan, the soul was simultaneously an object for anthropological research and a measuring instrument capable of revealing human character, interpreting natural history, and demonstrating the reality of an immortal soul. Psychometry taught that human souls, especially those of women, were capable of acting as instruments because they could feel the mysterious energies that people and objects radiated. Although orthodox male scientists rejected the visions of sensitive women as the antithesis of reliable data, psychometric researchers believed that the feelings of women were both the instruments and information that made their science possible. Psychometry promised to revolutionize science by insisting that sympathy and subjectivity, not detachment and objectivity, ought to undergird research. Yet as male experimenters worked to prove psychometry’s effectiveness, they almost invariably cast themselves as detached observers accurately recording the data provided by their female instruments. Thus, despite pushing for scientific reform, the methods and discourse of male psychometric experimenters eroded their field’s core arguments about connectedness and subjectivity and, instead, reinforced the notion that detachment and objectivity were essential to legitimate science. Challenges to objectivity could prove just how thoroughly it dominated scientific discourse and practice. Still, some psychometers, particularly women who practiced at home, were untroubled by the fact that their research was predicated on subjective feelings, and psychometry remained a viable pursuit among spiritualists even as it faded from the realm of science. Psychometry emerged and, ultimately, fractured amid tensions between widespread enthusiasm for sciences that emphasized spiritual connectedness and the mounting pressure to legitimize scientific knowledge through the language and practices of objectivity.

Background and PurposeLimited literature exists regarding the psychometric properties of the Patient-Reported Outcome Measurement Information System (PROMIS) Fatigue Short Form 8a. This study compared the psychometric properties of the 8a to the established PROMIS Fatigue Short Form 7a.MethodsThis was a cross-sectional study of 31 older adults with joint pain. Equivalent forms reliability and a Rasch analysis explored reliability (equivalent forms, internal consistency), validity (unidimensionality, item INFIT/OUTFIT), and additional psychometrics (item mapping).ResultsThe measures were equivalent in measuring fatigue (r = 0.75, p < .001) with good internal consistency (α = .87−.92). Both were unidimensional. Even though the 8a had better fitting items, neither measure could differentiate low levels of fatigue.ConclusionThe 8a has comparable psychometric properties to the 7a in this population. Future work is needed in larger, more diverse samples.

AbstractHepatic encephalopathy is a neuropsychiatric disorder usually associated with severe hepatic insufficiency. It may however be divided into clinical and subclinical groupings. Psychometric testing, serial EEG's, EEG spectral analysis and event related potentials are all presently being used to quantify and differentiate between the various stages of hepatic encephalopathy. We review the use of psychometrics in hepatic encephalopathy and discuss evidence that these findings are comparable with the more objective data of electrophysiological studies. An adequate, simple and inexpensive assessment may be carried out using a battery of psychometric tests which include number connection tests and five pointed star construction.

Resumen
ArgumentThe Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) was developed at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, in the 1930s and 1940s. It became a highly successful and highly controversial psychometric tool. In professional terms, psychometric tools such as the MMPI transformed psychology and psychiatry. Psychometric instruments thus readily fit into the developmental history of psychology, psychiatry, and neurology; they were a significant part of the narrative of those fields’ advances in understanding, intervening, and treating people with mental illnesses. At the same time, the advent of such tools also fits into a history of those disciplines that records the rise of obsessional observational and evaluative techniques and technologies in order to facilitate patterns of social control that became typical during the Progressive Era in the United States and after. It was those patterns that also nurtured the resistance to psychometrics that emerged during the Vietnam War and after.

Resumen
The past 20 years have seen the development of instruments designed to specify standards and evaluate the adequacy of published studies with respect to the quality of study design, the quality of findings, as well as the quality of their reporting. In the field of psychometrics, the first minimum set of standards for the review of psychometric instruments was published in 1996 by the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Medical Outcomes Trust. Since then, a number of tools have been developed with similar aims. The present paper reviews basic psychometric properties (reliability, validity and responsiveness), compares six tools developed for the critical appraisal of psychometric studies and provides a worked example of using the COSMIN checklist, Terwee-m statistical quality criteria, and the levels of evidence synthesis using the method of Schellingerhout and colleagues (2012). This paper will aid users and reviewers of questionnaires in the quality appraisal and selection of appropriate instruments by presenting available assessment tools, their characteristics and utility.

Resumen
This systematic review on non-instrumental clinical assessment in adult oropharyngeal dysphagia (OD) provides an overview of published measures with reported reliability and validity. In alignment with PRISMA, four databases (CINAHL, Embase, PsycINFO, and PubMed) were searched, resulting in a total of 16 measures and 32 psychometric studies included. The included measures assessed any aspect of swallowing, consisted of at least one specific subscale relating to swallowing, were developed by clinical observation, targeted adults, and were developed in English. The included psychometric studies focused on adults, reported on measures for OD-related conditions, described non-instrumental clinical assessments, reported on validity or reliability, and were published in English. Methodological quality was assessed using the standard quality assessment QualSyst. Most measures targeted only restricted subdomains within the conceptual framework of non-instrumental clinical assessments. Across the 16 measures, hypothesis testing and reliability were the most reported psychometrics, whilst structural validity and content validity were the least reported. Overall, data on the reliability and validity of the included measures proved incomplete and frequently did not meet current psychometric standards. Future research should focus on the development of comprehensive non-instrumental clinical assessments for adults with OD using contemporary psychometric research methods.

Resumen
Abstract This special section presents the psychometric properties of fidelity scales used in a national mental health services project in Norway to improve the quality of care of people with psychoses. Across Norway, 39 clinical units in six health trusts participated. The project provided education, implementation support and fidelity assessments. The papers in the section address the psychometrics of fidelity measurement for the specific evidence-based practices: illness management and recovery, family psychoeducation, physical healthcare and antipsychotic medication management. Another paper analyzes the psychometrics of a scale measuring individualization and quality improvement that may be used in conjunction with fidelity scales for specific evidence-based practices. The first paper in the section presents the development and field of fidelity scales, and the two final papers with comments add some additional perspectives and discuss fidelity scales in a wider context. The psychometrics of the five scales were good to excellent. Fidelity assessment is a necessary and effective strategy for quality improvement.

Resumen
This review aimed to explore the psychometric properties of quality of life (QOL) scales to identify appropriate tools for research and clinical practice in Arabic-speaking adults. A systematic search of the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature® (EBSCO Information Services, Ipswich, Massachusetts, USA), MEDLINE® (National Library of Medicine, Bethesda, Maryland, USA), EMBASE (Elsevier, Amsterdam, Netherlands) and PsycINFO (American Psychological Association, Washington, District of Columbia, USA) databases was conducted according to Preferred Reporting Items Systematic Reviews and Meta- Analysis guidelines. Quality assessment criteria were then utilised to evaluate the psychometric properties of identified QOL scales. A total of 27 studies relating to seven QOL scales were found. While these studies provided sufficient information regarding the scales’ validity and reliability, not all reported translation and cross-cultural adaptation processes. Researchers and clinicians should consider whether the psychometric properties, subscales and characteristics of their chosen QOL scale are suitable for use in their population of interest. Keywords: Quality of Life; Cross-Cultural Comparison; Translations; Psychometrics; Validity and Reliability; Surveys and Questionnaires; Systematic Review.

Resumen
Traditional protocol for the determination of an adequate sample size is power analysis. Such a protocol is not useful when the primary hypothesis focuses on psychometric measurement properties. Traditional psychometrics advises that there should be 10 respondents per item. Both hypothetical and real research examples illustrate the usefulness of sub-sample analysis in determining that a sample size of at least 50 and not more than 100 subjects is adequate to represent and evaluate the psychometric properties of measures of social constructs. The “10 respondents per item” advice builds a sample size disincentive into the research design; it also represents “sample size overkill.” Sample-size overkill occurs when the research design specifies a number of cases needed, which is in excess of the number actually needed for a desired inference.

Resumen
Personality questionnaire items are normally written by experts in personality theory or psychometrics. This makes personality test development expensive, especially since as many as 40% of the items are discarded after quantitative analysis. Could the crowd create personality items that are as good as the ones developed by professionals? We analyze the psychometric quality of 164 Big Five personality items generated by the crowd (n=82) and show that non-expert item writers are capable of designing high quality personality items. The analysis revealed that 59% of the crowdsourced items had adequate psychometric properties, and thus could be used as an alternative instrument to measure Big Five personality traits. We conclude that crowdsourcing personality items is a possible strategy to generate new items rapidly. We also discuss some of the challenges of crowdsourcing general psychological items.

Resumen
Psychometrics are increasingly being used to evaluate trust in the automation of safety-critical systems. There is no consensus on what the highest level of measurement is for psychometric trust. This is important as the level of measurement determines what mathematics and statistics can be meaningfully applied to ratings. In this work, we introduce a new method for determining what the maximum level of measurement is for psychometric ratings. We use this to assess the level of measurement of trust in automation using human ratings about the behavior of unmanned aerial systems performing search tasks. Results show that trust is best represented at an ordinal level and that it can be treated as interval in most situations. It is unlikely that trust in automation ratings are ratio. We discuss these results, their implications, and future research.

Resumen
Most existing quality scales have been developed with minimal attention to accepted standards of psychometric properties. Even for those that have been used widely in medical research, limited evidence exists supporting their psychometric properties. The focus of our current study is to address this gap by evaluating the psychometrics properties of two existing quality scales that are frequently used in cancer observational research: (1) Item Bank on Risk of Bias and Precision of Observational Studies developed by the Research Triangle Institute (RTI) International and (2) Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale (NOQAS). We used the Rasch measurement model to evaluate the psychometric properties of two quality scales based on the ratings of 49 studies that examine firefighters’ cancer incidence and mortality. Our study found that RTI and NOQAS have an acceptable item reliability. Two raters were consistent in their assessment, demonstrating high interrater reliability. We also found that NOQAS has more items that show better fit than the RTI scale. The NOQAS produced lower study quality scores with a smaller variation, suggesting that NOQAS items are much easier to rate. Our findings accord with a previous study, which conclude that the RTI scale was harder to apply and thus produces more heterogenous quality scores than NOQAS. Although both RTI and NOQAS showed high item reliability, NOQAS items are better fit to the underlying construct, showing higher validity of internal structure and stronger psychometric properties. The current study adds to our understanding of the psychometric properties of NOQAS and RTI scales for future meta-analyses of observational studies, particularly in the firefighter cancer literature.

The purpose of present essay was revisited and supplemented antecedents on psychological measurement and analyzed his foundations in a scientific perspective. This review includes since early great pioneers of measurement at the beginning of nineteen century to the principal contributions of psychometrics in the middle of twenty century. The researcher’ knowledge on the Science History in general and the analysis of theories and methodological antecedents of their discipline are very important to an integral scientific’ formation. The problems and challenges of science are showed an interdisciplinary approach that permits the comprehension of scientific concepts and methods, to improve and reorganized each discipline with a broad and new perspective. The roots of Psychometry included pioneers and contributors in Mathematical, Statistical, and Experimental Sciences, who’s had persisted with creativity in the development of theories, methods, models, technics and procedures to construct psychological measurements in social and behavioral sciences. Since the Rasch’ Model and the Item Response Theory, among others advances in multivariate statistics, the modern Psychometry have theories, models, applied strategies and methods to document validity and reliability evidence. Psychometrics today, counts with standards to guide best practices in test development and validation in behavioral sciences.

Resumen
This article comprehensively reviews the major components and dimensions of love that researchers operationalized in psychometric scales throughout recent decades. The Quadrangular Love Theory (QLT) synthesizes the achievements of psychometrics of love and demonstrates – theoretically and empirically - that they are grouped in four umbrella love dimensions: Compassion and Affection, which characterize the feelings toward a partner, and Closeness and Commitment, which characterize the feelings regarding a relationship. To test this theory, the authors developed the Quadrangular Love Scale (QLS) and explored its construct validity and psychometric properties in two studies utilizing various samples. Study 1 (N = 592) generally supported convergent and discriminant validities and internal reliability of the four dimensions. Study 2 (N = 584) provided additional support to the discriminant validity of QLS in terms of personality traits as predictors of major love feelings and love attitudes as typological differences of experiencing these feelings.

Resumen
The presence of missing responses in assessment settings is inevitable and may yield biased parameter estimates in psychometric modeling if ignored or handled improperly. Many methods have been proposed to handle missing responses in assessment data that are often dichotomous or polytomous. Their applications remain nominal, however, partly due to that (1) there is no sufficient support in the literature for an optimal method; (2) many practitioners and researchers are not familiar with these methods; and (3) these methods are usually not employed by psychometric software and missing responses need to be handled separately. This article introduces and reviews the commonly used missing response handling methods in psychometrics, along with the literature that examines and compares the performance of these methods. Further, the use of the TestDataImputation package in R is introduced and illustrated with an example data set and a simulation study. Corresponding R codes are provided.

Resumen
Experimental psychology has long embodied the quest to identify the causes of psychopathology. This venerable tradition has been joined in this quest by network theory, a novel approach to conceptualizing episodes of disorder as emerging from complex systems characterized by dynamic interactions of symptoms. Although issuing from the correlational, psychometric tradition rather than the experimental one, it nevertheless offers methods for identifying symptom targets for clinical experimental intervention. The purpose of this article is to sketch the points of contact between network psychometrics and experimental psychopathology.

In a recent paper, the first version of the contemporary psychometrics (ConPsy) checklist for assessing measurement tool quality has been published. This checklist aims to provide guidelines and references to researchers to assess measurement properties for newly developed measurement instruments. The ConPsy checklist recommends appropriate statistical methods for measurement instrument evaluation to guide researchers in instrument development and to support peer review. In this opinion article, I critically review some aspects of the checklist and question the usefulness of certain psychometric analyses in research practice.

Resumen
Assessment is conducted for three reasons; personnel selection in academic, industrial, and government situations, certification of individuals and accountability of training institutions, and to provide formative instruction. The first goal has dominated much of psychometrics over the past century, the second goal is relatively new, and the third is not yet in widespread use. We review the mathematics of personnel selection and argue that there is not a great deal to be gained by improvement of present testing methods for personnel selection unless the institution doing the selection is either extremely large or highly selective. We concentrate on the third use, providing formative instruction. Formative instruction ought to diagnose an individual’s capabilities and knowledge, rather than simply grading them on a satisfactory-unsatisfactory scale. However the idea of grading is, in some fashion, built into traditional psychometric forms of testing. We sketch the beginnings of a psychometric approach intended to provide analyses for formative testing. Examples are given from the field of science instruction.

Resumen
Tests are fundamental to psychology, and their use should always be supported by solid evidence. Since 2010, the National Test Commission of the General Council of the Spanish Psychological Association has been carrying out annual evaluations, using the Test Evaluation Questionnaire-Revised (CET-R) with the collaboration of external experts. To date, 96 tests have been evaluated. This tenth edition includes six tests from three well-known publishing houses: TEA Hogrefe, Pearson Educación, and Giunti Psychometrics. In addition, the psychometric properties were also reviewed of a non-commercial test, the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS), mentioned among the 25 most used tests by Spanish psychologists. Evaluating non-commercial tests, developed in academic contexts, is crucial, as it enriches the set of tools available to practitioners. This paper addresses the challenges of evaluating tests of this type and offers suggestions for improving both the development and validation of the tests as well as the review of their psychometric properties using the CET-R.

Resumen
Aim: To systematically review measurement properties of Arabic patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) that assess activity and participation in children with and without health conditions. Method: Four databases were searched. Arabic PROMs with focus on activity and/or participation constructs were selected. Data on measurement properties were extracted and the methodological quality of the studies was assessed by COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement Instruments (COSMIN) risk of bias checklist. Result: Of the total 149 articles screened, only 10 studies involving 10 measures that assessed activity and/or participation in children with or without health conditions were included. The focus of all PROMs is primarily on the activity of daily living at home and/or school, but dimensions of measurement differed across PROMs. None of the PROMs demonstrated sufficient properties for all psychometrics. The most studied psychometric property was internal consistency, whereas the least studied psychometric property was structural validity. Responsiveness was not investigated in any of the studies included. Conclusions: Despite the presence of Arabic PROMs on activity and participation for children, none of the reviewed measures satisfied all psychometric properties. Clinicians and researchers are encouraged to carefully select PROMs that are psychometrically sound and appropriate for the construct being measured.

Resumen

The paper examines the problems of correctness and adequacy of the use of psychometric tools in psychosocial research and applications. The main attention is paid to the problem of correct processing of rank information, which is non-numeric information that does not allow the use of classical mathematical operations, starting with the addition operation. The approach of forming the results of processing expert, ranked information in the scale of relations based on the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), which includes a measurement apparatus and decision-making algorithms, is presented. An example is given that simulates the situation of an expert council and demonstrates unacceptable contradictions that arise with the "numerical" approach to processing rank information. The algorithms of the AHP normative approach are presented, which allow obtaining numerical, personalized assessments of psychosocial characteristics. The basic concepts of the Rasch Measurement (RM) for comparing the capabilities of AHP and RM in psychosocial applications are described. Some critical remarks about the methods of psychometry are considered. It is shown that the origins of the criticisms are associated with a superficial understanding of the basic concepts of psychometric measurements and the scope of their applications, as well as with elementary errors when using the apparatus of psychometric instruments.

Resumen
Aims.Stigma of mental illness is a significant barrier to receiving mental health care. However, measurement tools evaluating stigma of mental illness have not been systematically assessed for their quality. We conducted a systematic review to critically appraise the methodological quality of studies assessing psychometrics of stigma measurement tools and determined the level of evidence of overall quality of psychometric properties of included tools.Methods.We searched PubMed, PsycINFO, EMBASE, CINAHL, the Cochrane Library and ERIC databases for eligible studies. We conducted risk-of-bias analysis with the Consensus-based Standards for the Selection of Health Measurement Instruments checklist, rating studies as excellent, good, fair or poor. We further rated the level of evidence of the overall quality of psychometric properties, combining the study quality and quality of each psychometric property, as: strong, moderate, limited, conflicting or unknown.Results.We identified 117 studies evaluating psychometric properties of 101 tools. The quality of specific studies varied, with ratings of: excellent (n = 5); good (mostly on internal consistency (n = 67)); fair (mostly on structural validity, n = 89 and construct validity, n = 85); and poor (mostly on internal consistency, n = 36). The overall quality of psychometric properties also varied from: strong (mostly content validity, n = 3), moderate (mostly internal consistency, n = 55), limited (mostly structural validity, n = 55 and construct validity, n = 46), conflicting (mostly test–retest reliability, n = 9) and unknown (mostly internal consistency, n = 36).Conclusions.We identified 12 tools demonstrating limited evidence or above for (+, ++, +++) all their properties, 69 tools reaching these levels of evidence for some of their properties, and 20 tools that did not meet the minimum level of evidence for all of their properties. We note that further research on stigma tool development is needed to ensure appropriate application.

Resumen
AbstractPatients with heart failure have comparable illness burden and palliative care needs to those with cancer. However, few of them are offered timely palliative care. One main barrier is the difficulty in identifying those who require palliative care. Several palliative care needs-assessment/measurement tools were used to help identify these patients and assess/measure their needs, but it is not known which one is the most appropriate for this population. This review aimed to identify the most appropriate palliative care needs-assessment/measurement tools for patients with heart failure. Cochrane Library, MEDLINE Complete, AMED, PsycINFO, CINAHL Complete, EMBASE, EThOS, websites of the identified tools, and references and citations of the included studies were searched from inception to 25 June 2020. Studies were included if they evaluated palliative care needs-assessment/measurement tools for heart failure populations in terms of development, psychometrics, or palliative care patient/needs identification. Twenty-seven papers were included regarding nineteen studies, most of which were quantitative and observational. Six tools were identified and compared according to their content and context of use, development, psychometrics, and clinical applications in identifying patients with palliative care needs. Despite limited evidence, the Needs Assessment Tool: Progressive Disease – Heart Failure (NAT:PD-HF) is the most appropriate palliative care needs-assessment tool for use in heart failure populations. It covers most of the patient needs and has the best psychometric properties and evidence of identification ability and appropriateness. Psychometric testing of the tools in patients with heart failure and evaluating the tools to identify those with palliative care needs require more investigation.
