Texto completoThe perception and correct interpretation of information relevant for driving is necessary to handle a car efficiently and safely without posing danger to other road users as well as oneself. The much discussed concept of drivers’ situation awareness (e.g., Gelau & Krems, 2009) is concerned with the processes of perception and interpretation of driving relevant information (e.g., Baumann & Krems 2007; Durso, Rawson, & Girotto, 2007; Endsley, 1995; Gugerty, 1997, in press). The related theories emphazise the importance of this information for anticipating traffic situations and, therewith, for selecting an appropriate action. Thus, the examination of the relevance of selected traffic elements for the driving task is a prerequisite to understand the cognitive processes required for driving. Therefore, one goal of the present paper was to identify attributes of the traffic environment that influence the perception on how relevant a respective element of a traffic situation is for safe driving. Will it make a difference for drivers whether the behavior of other road users is predictable, whether other road users are in close range, or whether they move very fast? The second goal was to investigate whether the relevance concept can be used as a determinant for definitions of traffic complexity (e.g., Elvik, 2004; Fastenmeier, 1995a). Does the complexity of a traffic situation depend on how many elements relevant for driving this situation comprises? The third goal of this research was to examine the question of whether the relevance concept can be used to explain differences in the behavior of experienced and inexperienced drivers. Even though both experienced and inexperienced drivers have similar knowledge about the relevance of traffic elements for driving the latter are less able to use that knowledge adequately while actively operating a car, which in turn may lead to differences in perception of and coping with a certain traffic situation (e.g., Feltovich, Prietula, & Ericsson, 2006; Stokes, Kemper, & Kite, 1997). Five studies were conducted to reach these goals. In study I experienced drivers watched video clips of traffic situations. The participants judged how relevant different elements are for safe driving. The judgements were then used to identify attributes of the traffic environment or the specific elements themselves that might moderate their relevance. Complementary, inexperienced drivers performed the same judgement task in study II. Subsequently, their estimations of the relevance of traffic elements were compared with the estimations of the experienced drivers. Drivers of study III navigated through simple and complex traffic situations in a driving simulator. Complexity varied regarding the number of elements relevant for driving in a given situation, whereas the elements’ relevance was manipulated by using the previously identified attributes of the traffic environment. For example the attributes distance or predictability of other road users were manipulated. Thus, situations with elements relevant for driving (e.g., a close car or an unpredictable person) could be compared to situations with elements less relevant (e.g., a distant car or a predictable person). The importance of the elements for driving, workload, driving behavior as well as gaze behavior were measured. In study IV, the manipulation of complexity resulted in eight conditions that allowed for a detailed examination of the influence of the various attributes on the relevance of the elements. Finally in study V, experienced and inexperienced drivers were compared regarding their knowledge about the relevance of elements for driving as well as the application of this knowledge while operating driving scenarios in the simulator. One result of this research was the development of a taxonomy of attributes of the traffic environment. With the application of the taxonomy the relevance of traffic elements can be defined and, thus, the relevance concept was further specified. Furthermore, driving task relevance of traffic elements was confirmed as a predicting factor of traffic complexity. According to the attained results, the number of elements relevant for driving influences the complexity of traffic situations. The drivers adapted to an increasing number of relevant elements in the investigated traffic situations and the associated extended demands – an expected behavior similar to findings of former studies on traffic complexity (e.g., Chapman & Underwood, 1998). Finally, as predicted, participants of varying driving experience did not differ significantly in their knowledge about the relevance of traffic elements. However, experienced and inexperienced drivers used this knowledge in different ways while actively performing the driving task. Experienced drivers adapted their behavior flexibly to the demands of the traffic situation differing in the number of elements relevant for driving. In contrast, inexperienced drivers behaved less adaptive and more rigid, i.e., independently from the demands originating from a traffic situation (cp., Underwood, Chapman, Brocklehurst, Underwood & Crundall, 2003). Summarizing, the reported research specifies the concept of the relevance of traffic elements for driving with regard to content and provides a basis for the capture of the concept. Furthermore, the applicability of the relevance concept was tested and validated regarding traffic situation complexity as well as in driving behavior comparisons of experienced and inexperienced drivers

Texto completoA diverse array of animals has specialized in consuming floral nectar – from butterflies and bees to hummingbirds and bats. The nectar characteristics of plant species often appear to reflect the needs of their dominant pollinator, for example plants pollinated by larger animals tend to produce larger amounts of nectar. This correspondence suggests that nectar traits have evolved in response to the choice behavior of pollinators. The evolutionary and ecological interaction between plants and their pollinators crucially depends on the pollinators’ ability to perceive differences in floral nectar traits and on their decision-making mechanisms. In the presented studies I adopt a cognitive ecology approach in order to investigate the role of information-processing in pollinators on the evolution of floral nectar traits. In the first three chapters I focus on the abilities of different pollinators to discriminate among sugar solutions with different concentrations. In Chapter 4 I present a detailed analysis of individual differences in the foraging context and discuss how they might relate to foraging efficiency. In the fifth and final chapter I use the findings on the psychophysics of nectar quality evaluation to address the question of the evolutionary origins of floral nectar traits. With these studies I show how the investigation of cognitive mechanisms of pollinators can inform evolutionary and ecological research on plants pollinated by animals. In addition, I demonstrate how the virtual pollination ecology methodology can explain the evolutionary origin and maintenance of plant traits that are subjected to cognition-mediated selection exerted by pollinators.

Texto completoParkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder. For many years, it has been described as a neuropsychiatric disease, due to its clinical expression which combines motor and non-motor symptoms, particularly psychological and emotional. During the course of PD, non-motor fluctuations appear and have a major negative impact on patients' autonomy and quality of life. Of these, neuropsychiatric fluctuations (NPsyF) are probably the most disabling. NPsyF are characterized by the alternation of the so-called OFF "hypo-dopaminergic" phase, characterized by anxiety, fatigue, lack of motivation, sadness and slowness of thought, and appearing during periods of reduced efficacy of antiparkinsonian treatment (OFF phase) ; and so-called ON "hyper-dopaminergic" phase, characterized by a general feeling of well-being, elevated mood (even hypomania), and hyperactivity; appearing during periods of antiparkinsonian treatment efficacy (ON phase). The presence and severity of NPsyF can vary from patient to patient. The identification and management of NPsyF play an essential role in the global and personalized management of PD. With this in mind, our group developed a neuropsychiatrics fluctuations scale (the NFS) a few years ago. This scale aims at defining and quantifying the impact of MPsyF on real time. The main aim of this thesis work is to study the psychometric characteristics of the NFS (NFS Pre-Valid and NFS-Valid studies), and secondarily, to use the NFS to study the clinical properties of fluctuating parkinsonian patients. We also analyzed the impact of deep brain stimulation treatment on NPsyF measured with NFS (PSYCHOStim Study)

Texto completoThe current paper combines personality systems interaction theory (Kuhl, 2000, 2001) with the model of job performance by Tett and Burnett (2003). Using established stress models from work psychology it is hypothesized that there is a relation between occupational action state orientation, scalable by means of items response theory, and job performance, which is moderated by the subjective stress level of job characteristics. Three surveys among samples of N = 415, N = 331, and N = 49 professionals yielded cross sectional data for investigating the hypotheses. Occupational action state orientation proves a valid construct which is compatible with Samejima’s (1969, 1997) Graded Response Model using a 14-item scale. As a result of multiple hierarchical regression analyses, the hesitation dimension of specifically occupational, in contrast to general action state orientation is a predictor of both contextual and task performance, incremental to conscientiousness, extraversion, and neuroticism. Contrary to expectations this relation is only marginally moderated by stress-relevant job characteristics. Even when controlling for an occurring common method bias by means of path analysis the occupational hesitation dimension’s predictor role perseveres. Therefore, the dispositional ability in subconsciously regulating inhibited positive affect due to occupational obstacles, seems to be a crucial predictor of job performance, especially regarding leaders. Hence, professional aptitude assessment benefits from assessing action state orientation in a contextualized manner. Application of item response theory-based scales further enhances assessment process efficiency
