Resumen
Esta obra entrelaza ciencia, realizaciones tecnológicas y ciencia ficción. Películas de ciencia ficción –como Viaje a la Luna, Interestelar, Viaje a las estrellas– despertaron la imaginación de lectores que posteriormente se convirtieron en los pioneros de los vuelos espaciales y contribuyeron al desarrollo de la ciencia y la tecnología. La ciencia moderna incorpora teorías que trascienden el sentido común para interpretar los fenómenos y el universo a la luz de nuevas perspectivas, las cuales se fundamentan en la relatividad de Einstein (especial y general), en la mecánica cuántica y en otras componentes de la ciencia contemporánea. Conceptos como gravedad, espacio-tiempo, dilatación del tiempo, contracción de longitud, agujeros negros, ondas gravitacionales, agujero de gusano, entrelazamiento cuántico son elementos distantes del modelo newtoniano del universo. Relatos míticos –como Ícaro, el profeta Elías, Enoc, la ascensión de Jesús– podrían interpretarse a la luz de nuevas perspectivas. Los avances tecnológicos han sido significativos. La humanidad cuenta hoy en día con Sistemas de Posicionamiento Global (GPS), dispone de la capacidad de modificar la velocidad heliocéntrica de una nave espacial mediante una ayuda gravitacional planetaria (flyby o swingby), al igual que con la posibilidad de realizar correcciones de trayectoria mediante sistemas como el de propulsión eléctrica. Sistemas robóticos han visitado y traído muestras de asteroides, preparando el camino para la futura minería espacial. Los sistemas Perseverance Rover, Tianwen-1 y Hope Mar, lanzados en 2020, se encuentran explorando el planeta Marte.
