Texto completoThe first moments of an interaction with a virtual character are critical since users form impressions about them, which can affect the rest of the interaction, in terms of engagement and willingness to continue it. In this Thesis we present a computational model for managing user’s impression of agent’s warmth and competence (W&C), the 2 fundamentals dimensions of social cognition. The goal of the agent is to adapt its non-verbal behaviour in real-time during an interaction, according to user’s non-verbal reactions. Our approach starts from the analysis of a corpus of human-human interactions in order to identify a set of non-verbal behaviours eliciting different degrees of W&C. A perceptual study then investigated how these behaviours are perceived when performed by a virtual agent. A reinforcement learning (RL) algorithm has been developed to allow the agent to learn in real-time the behaviours which give the best impression to the user, according to its goal. User’s non-verbal reactions (computed from low-level signals such as facial action units) are used as a reward for the RL. We have personalized the computational model in order to adapt the agent’s behaviours with the goal of maximizing user’s engagement or impressions of agent’s W&C. Two use cases have been run in order to evaluate the impact of an adapting agent on user’s impressions and perception of the interaction, compared to a non-adapting agent. In the first experiment the agent adapted its self-presentational strategies in order to maximise user’s engagement. In the second one the agent learned the best combinations of non-verbal behaviours to display in order to maximise user’s impressions of its W&C

Texto completoThe concept of first impression is frequently used in social psychology, but it hasn’t been forcefully exploited in Marketing. Even though this notion appears daily in the business world, it is not always easily measured. The comparison of two methods allows us to affirm that the first impression of the new products is formed during the first 10 seconds and then, it provides us minimal perception of product. The process of the experiment was seriously carried out among new cars being commercialized in Vietnam. The results are convergent and this thesis shows not only the interests but also the limits of this psychological concept

Should we trust our unconscious when buying a house or a new car? That is exactly what Dijksterhuis, Bos, Nordgren and van Baaren, (2006) have been recommending. Indeed, according to these researchers, performing a distraction task such as solving anagrams would allow to think unconsciously and therefore enhance the quality of complex decisions. Before making a complex decision, we should thus avoid thinking consciously about the advantages and drawbacks of each alternative. Given the implications of these findings in various areas such as management, politics, or justice, this thesis will thoroughly reexamine the method of experiments relative to the unconscious thought theory (Diksterhuis & Nordgren, 2006). The seven experiments suggest that the apparent superiority of decisions made after distraction does not result from unconscious thought but rather from the fact that further conscious deliberation can deteriorate high quality first impressions. The results also suggest that thinking consciously enhances the quality of decisions in the absence of such prior first impressions.

Texto completoAt a time when the 2017 presidential elections are approaching, the question of the importance of personal image in politics arises. What is its weight in our perception? What role does it play? In order to better understand the evolution of personal image strategies, it is necessary to start our analysis from the advent of radio to the use of social networks. We will see the different techniques used to attract a larger electorate. This aspect of nonverbal communication fascinates by its complexity. Many authors like McLuhan (1964) and Mehrabian (1967) agree that the visual dominates our global communication. This is why many political personalities concentrate on constructing their non-verbal communication by looking after their appearance, gestures and the tone of their voices. The aim is to make a good impression in order to attract as many members as possible. Thus the first impression in politics is firmly linked to the rise of the politician. Our quantitative survey gathers all these elements to answer the following question: Does the personal image influence our first impression? In this way, we will see if the personal image remains dominant on a first impression.
