SCAVI NELLA NECROPOLI ROMANA A VAGNARI, NEL TERRITORIO DI GRAVINA IN PUGLIA, 2002Lo scavo del cimitero del villaggio romano di Vagnari in Apulia, iniziato nel 2002, è tuttora in corso. L'articolo propone la pubblicazione finale di diciassette inumazioni, scavate prevalentemente nel primo anno, databili nel complesso tra il I e il IV secolo d.C. Nella parte I Small discute le tipologie tombali, le pratiche funerarie, l'uso dei corredi funebri e i rituali funerari, e delinea paragoni con altre necropoli dell'Italia romana. Nella parte II Prowse analizza i resti scheletrici dal punto di vista dell'eta, del sesso e delle patologie. La parte III è un catalogo descrittivo delle deposizioni e dei corredi tombali, con resoconti specialistici sulla ceramica condotti da Kenrick, sul vetro da Giuliani, sulle lucerne da De Stefano, sulle monete da Abdy e sugli amuleti da Henig. Nella parte IV De Stefano discute la provenienza delle lucerne e la loro distribuzione in Italia e in particolar modo in Apulia. Il villaggio romano di Vagnari costituiva un centro economico di una proprietà imperiale, e lo scavo del cimitero è parte di un programma di studio in corso sul villaggio e il suo ambiente.

Résumé L’étude des pratiques funéraires constitue un moyen d’appréhender les sociétés présentes ou passées par le biais d’observations, d’outils, de notions ou de concepts issus des sciences humaines et sociales. Toutefois, cette approche rencontre de nombreuses difficultés face à la définition de la ou des identités comme construite(s) ou constructions culturelles. Il est alors nécessaire de définir ce qu’on entend par pratique funéraire d’une part et identité(s) d’autre part. Pour cela, le recours à la discussion interdisciplinaire permet de faire émerger les problématiques liées à la combinaison de ces deux notions, mais aussi aux méthodes et à l’étendue des connaissances accessibles dans l’étude d’une société. Abstract Title: Towards a transdisciplinary approach to the links between funerary practices and identities: problems, debates and concepts The study of funerary practices is a means of apprehending present or past societies through observations, tools, notions or concepts borrowed from the humanities and social sciences. However, this approach meets numerous hurdles in defining identity or identities as cultural constructs or constructions. It is therefore necessary to define what is meant by funerary practice on the one hand and identity(ies) on the other hand. In this regard, interdisciplinary discussions play a key role to address the issues linked to the combination of these two notions, as well as to get a better grasp of the methods and the extent of the knowledge accessible in the study of a society.

‘TESTE INCOMPLETE DI RITRATTI’ SU SARCOFAGI TARDO ROMANI: NUOVE PROSPETTIVEQuesto articolo prende in considerazione teste ‘incomplete’ di ritratti su sarcofagi romani dal secondo al quarto secolo d.C: esse rappresentano un fenomeno diffuso (apparentemente sempre più diffuso verso la fine del periodo considerate) ed includono materiale sia cristiano che non. Quasi tutte le precedenti discussioni su questo fenomeno hanno preso in considerazione quando e perchè esso si sia verificato, proponendo varie spiegazione pratiche per il mancato completamento del lavoro – quali l'indifferenza del cliente, possibili aggiunte più tarde di pittura o stucco ecc. Lo scopo di questo articolo è di esplorare quale fosse il valore collettivo di questi ritratti incompleti in relazione a vari aspetti della società contemporanea. Dopo un resoconto del ruolo avuto dai ritratti nella cultura funeraria romana l'articolo descrive i materiali e discute precedenti lavori sul-l'argomento. La possibilità che questi ritratti incompleti possano aver rappresentato una variante (estrema) di uno stile astratto nell'arte tardo antica viene considerata, nonchè il significato che essi possono aver assunto dal punto di vista dell'osservatore in termini di identità sociale e attitudine verso la morte. La conclusione è che tali significati positivi possano essere stati forti abbastanza da spiegare la generale accettazione dei volti incompleti su questi sarcofagi.

Entre 1840 y las primeras décadas del siglo XX, la fotografía de difuntos fue la manifestación iconográfica más importante de los ritos funerarios de la burguesía rioplatense. Si bien el retrato fue el género artístico predominante en los nacientes Estados nacionales del período, por su función ordenadora del tejido social a la vez que expresión social del individuo, la fotografía no sólo profundizó su difusión social sino que también absorbió y transformó prácticas seculares localmente arraigadas, como la mascarilla mortuoria, los grabados de cabezas yacentes y los retratos al óleo de personas “vivas” que usaban el cadáver como modelo. En el presente artículo se propone recorrer el desarrollo de ese particular género fotográfico durante la segunda mitad del siglo XIX, a fin de contribuir al conocimiento de una práctica que sigue siendo, aún hoy, un asunto poco abordado por la historiografía.Abstract: From 1840 to the first decades of the XXth Century, death portraiture was the most important manifestation of the funerary rituals of Rio de la Plata bourgeoisie. While portrait was –due to its potential to put in order the social weave and to be a social expression of individuals– a preeminent artistic gender in those brand new nation-states of the period, photography not only multiplied its social diffusion; it also absorbed and transformed secular practices locally rooted like mortuary masks, “lying heads” engravings, and oil painting portraits where the subject seems alive, but the model was a corpse. This article proposes to go through the evolution of this particular photographic gender during the second half of the XIXth century, in order to contribute to a better knowledge of a matter that is –still today– scarcely treated by historiography.Résumé : Entre 1840 et les premières décennies du XXe siècle, la photographie de défunts a été la manifestation iconographique la plus importante des rituels funéraires de la bourgeoisie du Río de la Plata. Si le portrait a été un genre artistique prédominant au sein des nouveaux États nations de la période, tant par sa fonction ordinatrice du tissu social que comme expression sociale de l’individu, la photographie en a approfondi la diffusion sociale ; elle a absorbé et transformé des pratiques séculaires localement enracinées, tels le masque mortuaire, les gravures de portraits de gisants et les peintures à l’huile de personnes “vivantes” qui prenaient le cadavre pour modèle. Cet article propose de suivre le développement de ce genre photographique particulier dans le second XIXe siècle, afin de contribuer à la connaissance d’une pratique qui reste, de nos jours encore, un sujet peu abordé par l’historiographie.

L’andare di Giovanni Paolo II alla casa del Padre ha toccato profondamente tutti, credenti e non credenti. Il modo in cui il Papa viveva i suoi ultimi giorni, segnati dalla sofferenza, la sua pasqua dalla morte alla vita in Dio, ha confermato definitivamente la sua grandezza. Agli occhi del mondo è sfavillata la sua bella umanità e allo stesso tempo si è aperto unenorme e doloroso vuoto. La vicenda dell’uomo rassomiglia a quella di un albero: si può valutarne bene la grandezza, salute e posto nel paesaggio solo quando è abbattuto.L’umanità del Santo Padre era tutta tessuta dei valori massimi di verità, libertà, amore... Il Papa li realizzava con radicalismo e coraggio che però sapeva unire alla mitezza e rispetto verso gli altri. Questa difficile sintesi testimonia il suo genio morale. Il fondamento dell’umanità di Giovanni Paolo II era la fede in Dio che rafforza le naturali capacità dell’uomo e permette di unire tutti gli elementi della realtà umana, inclusa la sofferenza e morte, in un armonioso insieme. Il legame con Dio non lo separava dagli uomini, ma lo apriva ancor di più a loro. Infatti, accanto a lui si radunavano sia giovani che adulti ed egli li univa sulla base dei valori che riconosceva. Col passare del tempo, la comunità attorno a lui aumentava, nel giorno del suo funerale abbracciava pressoché tutto il mondo. Ciò dimostra la giustezza dell’antropologia evangelica alla cui luce costruiva tutta la sua vita.I mezzi con cui il Santo Padre foggiava la sua umanità erano semplici, ma esigenti. La fonte della forza e della luce costituiva per lui soprattutto una fervida e costante preghiera, frequente partecipazione ai sacramenti e sistematica meditazione sulla Parola di Dio. A queste pratiche religiose univa un solido studio delle diverse materie: letteratura, filosofia, teologia. Con passione perseguiva la verità, voleva raggiungere l’essenza delle cose e fenomeni, trattava le questioni del tempo, confrontava i risultati delle sue riflessioni con le opinioni degli scienziati, artisti, politici. La luce della fede unita alla sapienza umana lo faceva un profeta dei nostri tempi che vedeva più lontano e più profondamente e influiva in modo efficace sul corso della storia. Poteva operare così molto grazie alla sua enorme laboriosità, sfruttamento di ogni istante e fedeltà nel poco.In verità per il Papa niente era di poco valore, egli scorgeva in tutto la straordinarietà, dappertutto scopriva con meraviglia le tracce della bellezza, sapienza e amore di Dio – nell’uomo, negli eventi, nella natura. Voleva rispondere a questo amore anche con amore con il quale abbracciava Dio, uomini e ogni creatura. L’amore faceva sì che non si sentisse mai annoiato né stanco e che esercitasse così forte influsso sugli altri. La gente si affezionava a lui, ricambiando il suo amore paterno e cercava di tramandarlo oltre, tentando perfino di riconciliarsi con i nemici. Infatti, è difficile resistere al potere dell’autentico amore!Di Giovanni XXIII si diceva: „Papa buono”, invece di Giovanni Paolo II si dice in modo più principale: „uomo buono”, poiché in lui si è manifestata nella misura rarissima la stessa umanità, la sua forma piena. Essere buono vuol dire essere vicino a Dio che come unico è veramente buono e fonte del bene. Dunque l’uomo buono è anche santo e grande. Tale era Giovanni Paolo II, perché cercava sempre di stare vicino a Dio, seguendo Cristo e la sua Madre. In questo cammino lo aiutavano la tradizione e la cultura polacca che nelle loro espressioni più alte sono fino in fondo evangeliche.

Cette recherche entend examiner les régions de l’Italie méridionale actuelle, exception faite des Pouilles, de la Sicile et des îles. L’objectif de ce travail est d’analyser le contexte des grandes nécropoles afin d’en déduire le plus d’informations possibles concernant l’imaginaire, à savoir l’ensemble des croyances et représentations, relatif aux classes d’âges inférieures parmi les différentes cultures et sociétés, autochtones et coloniales, présentes en Italie méridionale péninsulaire. Afin de mobiliser un échantillon ample et significatif sur lequel fonder notre étude, nous avons donc choisi d’analyser de manière approfondie les contextes funéraires qui présentaient au moins 100 sépultures pouvant être rattachées à la période étudiée ; des éventuels noyaux plus petits et relatifs au même contexte culturel ont tout de même étés pris en compte dans le cadre des comparaisons concernant la culture matérielle, les typologies funéraires et le traitement des corps, de même que pour la représentativité des enfants et adolescents dans la base de données archéologique. De la même manière, bien qu’ils ne soient pas pris en compte dans le catalogage qui constitue le corpus de cette étude, différents contextes et sépultures jugés significatifs ont été examinés et insérés dans l’analyse globale, afin de replacer les données de la sélection analytique dans un contexte historique et socio-culturel plus vaste. En ce qui concerne la base documentaire, cette recherche s’appuie sur l’analyse d’environ 3000 sépultures connues des publications exhaustives, ainsi que sur le catalogage de 969 contextes rattachables à des individus immatures, de l’âge périnatal à l’adolescence incluse. À ce corpus, il convient d’ajouter l’étude d’un lot inédit de nécropoles, constitué de 109 sépultures découvertes dans les années 1980 dans la propriété De Marco à Chiaromonte (Potenza), dans lequel ont été identifiées 26 tombes pour un total de 28 individus, auxquelles il faut ajouter 6 possibles inhumations en vase. Pour cette recherche, il a fallu analyser la documentation publiée sur un autre lot de la même nécropole, composé de 44 sépulturesThe archaeology of childhood developed from 1980s feminist studies trying to enlight the role of women in the reconstruction of the past: even if immature individuals made up between 40 and 65% of ancient communities, for a long time they have been neglected in the archaeological analyses and, as well as women, researchers contributed to the invisibility of children relegating them to the stereotype of passivity. In the last decennies, many archaeological studies focusing on gendered cultural constructions of childhood, mortuary treatments and evidence of social status proved the importance of these individuals in the cultural maintenance, inter- and intragenerational transmission, and cultural change of past communities. This research analyses almost 1000 tombs of children and adolescents in the necropoleis of Southern Italy between the Iron Age and the archaic period (in terms of absolute chronology, from the end of the 11th century to the first half of the Vth century B.C.). The study of the grave goods and tombs typology, the rituals performed out on the burials, the representativity within the necropolis and the mode of aggregation of the burials allowed to highlight a great variability of the funeral treatment of immature individuals, depending on the different cultural components active in this area during the period under review

In Northern Italy there are some particular structures funeral, denominated in the critical literature “putridaria” (strainer room), associated with particular funeral practices diffused in Italy in the eighteenth and nineteenth century. These structures, which are normally placed in crypts beneath the churches, allowed to intervene in the processes of decomposition and were functional to the prolonged treatment of the corpses. After death the bodies were placed in these environments, on particular seats, called strainers, (used to desiccate the bodies, eliminating the body fluid), where they stayed until the body was completely skeletonized and free from soft tissue. Following its complete drying the body underwent a second burial, often accompanied by a new funeral. The purpose of this research is to give an interpretation of the intended use of these structures facilities and the universe ritual, ethics and religion to which they responded, through the examination of archival sources and anthropological investigation of the remains. These types of structures were also found in other Italian regions, especially in southern Italy, where, however, the practice was intended to mummify instead of skeletonizing the bodies. These buildings reflect the concept of death in terms of duration and second burial, developed by Hertz [1994] and Van Geenep[1981]. Concepts that seemed to have been eradicated from the Catholic Church and instead have stood in the heart of Modern Europe. There is also reason to believe that such structures, although a critical literature about it is missing, spread to other areas of the Mediterranean, indeed, the Spanish monarchs still use for their burials in the Escorial monastery structures identical to putridaria identified in Italy.

Ce travail est issu d'une decouverte qui concerne un concours de l'institut de france en 1 799 pour decrire un nouveau rituel funeraire, que j'ai faite au cours d'une recherche sur les raisons du choix de cremation chez un groupe de membres d'une societe de cremation italienne. En verifiant les donnees concernant le xviiieme siecle, je me suis trouvee face a une tentative complexe de structurer un nouveau rite funebre. Le changement qui a eu lieu est important et concerne non seulement notre facon de traiter les defunts, mais l'attitude differente envers le corps, la nouvelle gestion des rapports entre ici-bas et l'au-dela et, en definitive, les liens culturels de l'angoisse de la mort. J'ai utilise ces materiaux pour comprendre quelles sont les differentes representations du corps qui se dessinent a l'interieur de la cremation moderne et, dans ce but, j'ai abordes certains themes tires de l'inde des vedas et de la grece homerique; ils constituent le paradigme antique, qui nous donne une grille d'interpretation suffisamment ample. Suit une reflexion sur le christianisme primitif, entendu comme ce moment ou l'occident consolide un choix funeraire d'inhumation, sans pour autant abandonner la production de metaphores de transformation a travers le feu, qui deviendront centrales dans la pensee alchimique et conflueront, en version modernisee, au sein des grandes decouvertes du xvii-xviiieme siecle sur la chaleur et l'electricite. Ces donnees servent de cadre a l'etude de ce processus que je definis la naissance d'un rituel. La signification rituelle du feu interagit avec l'identification de deux representations particulieres concernant les rapports entre corps et ame, qui, a mon avis, jouent un role fondamental dans la pensee occidentale. Synthetiquement, je les definis comme corps prison et corps miroir. Au fil du temps, les deux representations ont connu des fortunes diverses, mais n'ont jamais totalement disparu; selon mon hypothese, les dernieres annees du xviiieme siecle voient la suprematie du corps miroir, apres un processus de bouleversement qui a dure des siecles. J'essaierai de demontrer que lorsqu'une des deux representations prend le dessus, l'autre devient l'apanage de groupes marginaux, preuve d'un antagonisme qui puise ses racines jusque dans la diversite des facons de se rapporter au corpsThis work deals with the modifications in the images of the body during the funeral rite of cremation, all along the centuries from the ancient times to nowadays. It is studied starting from the indian pattern certified by the veda, it is explored in the ancient greek world, it is seen through the primitive christian wooden metaphors, and through the alchemy ones, till the illusions of positivism. The starting point is a research on the recent motivation of the cremation choice, which has given the evidence of the re-proposal of the 19th century cremation, being a secular and modern rite. L’épitaphe est porteuse de valeurs, au premier chef identitaires et mémorielles. L’espace étudié, l’Aquitaine Seconde et la Novempopulanie aux IVe-VIIIe s. se montre, en raison d’une romanité marquée, d’un christianisme naissant et des migrations wisigothiques et franques, un terrain de jeu idéal pour discuter les identités en termes de transformations, crises en encore constructions. Reste à savoir comment les inscriptions funéraires prennent part au débat, ce qu’elles révèlent, ou non, de ces bouleversements. Or nos documents n’amènent pas si simplement dans le champ de l’histoire évènementielle ni même dans celui d’une histoire de la christianisation. Les limites des sources (datation, dispersion, laconisme) conduisent au glissement des questionnements : ne pas s’arrêter à ce que l’épitaphe dit mais réfléchir à ses manipulations. Il s’agit, en évaluant les identités transmises, en estimant la portée mémorielle de l’épitaphe, de s’interroger sur les facteurs qui poussent une part de la société du Sud-Ouest gaulois à recourir à l’écrit lapidaire. Avant d’assumer une fonction, l’épitaphe relève d’une intention, déterminée en partie par un environnement, social et culturel, peut-Être par des habitudes. Ainsi pris, le tournant invite à une autre approche des documents, celle des pratiques, des gestes, des publics et in fine celle de la culture (des cultures) qui les produit. Ce travail, fondé sur un recueil des inscriptions des régions étudiées, défend une vision globale de l’objet épigraphique, vision qui repose sur des regards tant archéologique qu’historique qui convergent vers une question : le choix de l’épitaphe et ses usages entre Loire et Pyrénées, aux IVe-VIIIe sThe epitaph carries values of identity and memories. The regions under study, the Aquitaine Seconde and the Novempopulanie between the IVth and VIIIth c., are a perfect playground to discuss the transformation, crisis and construction of identities. Romanitas, the emergence to christianism as well Frankish and Wisigothic migrations also play important parts in this context. The underlying question is to determine to what extent funerary inscriptions can be relevant to this debate, if they reveal, or not, these changes. Our epigraphic documents do not necessarily refer to evental history nor do they evoke clearly the christianisation of territory. However the approximate dating of these sources, their scattering and their terseness, encourage us to go beyond the script itself and rather to consider its usage. In other words, the aim is to evaluate identities which are passed and their remembrance value to understand what are the factors that have fostered the choice of the epitaph by a part of the society of the south west Gallia. Prior to assuming informative and commemorative roles, the epitaph is firstly a cultural and social practice, probably motivated by habits. This perspective calls for a different approach of the epitaph, which focuses on the environment, culture and practices that produce it. This work, based on a corpus of the inscriptions of Aquitaine Seconde and Novempopulanie, defend a global vision of the epigraphic object, since its creation to its reception by different audiences. Nella cultura mafiosa, eventi religiosi come battesimi, funerali, feste patronali, pellegrinaggi ricoprono da sempre un ruolo importante. Lo stesso si può dire per il mondo dell’antimafia, nel quale i rituali devozionali occupano uno spazio simbolico irrinunciabile. Nel tempo queste tipologie di interazione hanno però trovato forme di rappresentazione anche in media diversi rispetto a quelli tradizionalmente vocati alle pratiche religiose e devozionali. A essere investiti di questa funzione sono così stati teatro popolare e di ricerca, letteratura agiografica e romanzo d’inchiesta, stampa quotidiana e fotografia, cinema e fiction tv, reportage documentario e servizi del tg, graphic novel e pagine dei social web. Muovendosi a largo spettro fra i vari luoghi di questa complessa mediasfera, il presente volume propone uno sguardo trasversale proprio su questo fenomeno, integrando fra loro, nell’analisi, saperi e linguaggi tipici del mondo dello spettacolo, delle arti visive e della storia dei media con quelli legati alla storia contemporanea e delle religioni.
