Resumen
In recent times Japanese posters have increasingly been appreciated all over the world. Their history is traced from the Edo period (the 18th and 19th centuries) in relation to Japan’s economic and commercial development. Only a few museums and libraries in Japan have established poster collections; these collect posters either as ‘art objects’ or as examples of graphic design. Methods of acquiring, arranging, and accommodating posters are described.

Resumen
The International Conference on Heteroatom Chemistry (ICHAC) is an established international forum for the presentation and discussion of research results in the diverse fields of heteroatom chemistry. Previous ICHAC meetings have been held in different countries: 1987 (Kobe, Japan); 1989 (Albany, NY, USA); 1992 (Riccione, Italy); 1995 (Seoul, Korea); 1998 (London, Ontario, Canada); 2001 (Łódź, Poland); 2004 (Shanghai, China); 2007 (Riverside, CA, USA); and 2009 (Oviedo, Spain). To celebrate its 10th anniversary, ICHAC returned to Japan, the first ICHAC host country. The ICHAC series has been organized mostly every three years, but now is a biennial event beginning with ICHAC-9 in Spain.Continuing the successful ICHAC series, ICHAC-10 covered many areas around the central topic of heteroatom chemistry. Following the long tradition of these conferences, ICHAC-10 was a major scientific event, bringing together organic and inorganic chemists all over the world to share their interests in the different areas of heteroatom chemistry. As usual, this conference served as a professional forum to disseminate scientific knowledge. Synthesis, structure, and reactivity, including catalysis, theoretical methods, and material aspects, constituted the major themes of ICHAC-10. This issue of Pure and Applied Chemistry presents the selected plenary, invited, and commemorative lectures at ICHAC-10.ICHAC-10 was held 20-25 May 2012 at Uji Obaku Plaza, Kyoto University, and the conference program consisted of 7 plenary and 17 invited lectures, 3 memorial lectures celebrating the 10th event in the ICHAC series, as well as 43 short communications and 154 poster presentations. We had 371 participants (92 from abroad) from 28 countries. All the participants may have found a fruitful environment at ICHAC-10 for personal contact and scientific exchange, and experienced useful interactions between chemists of different areas. As for the poster presentations by students, the organizing committee selected 9 posters for the student poster awards, and the best 3 of them were awarded as IUPAC poster awards in ICHAC-10.Although ICHAC-10 was originally scheduled to take place in the summer of 2011, we postponed it to 2012 owing to the effects of the earthquake and tsunami on 11 March 2011 and the following accident in the Fukushima nuclear power plant. On this occasion, I would like to express our sincere thanks for the worldwide support and sympathy given to the victims of this unprecedented disaster and also for the patience and cooperation concerning the postponing of ICHAC-10.As a chair of ICHAC-10, I would like to express my sincere thanks to the kind support by IUPAC, the Chemical Society of Japan, the Society of Silicon Chemistry Japan, the Kinki Chemical Society Japan, and the Institute for Chemical Research, Kyoto University, and also the great assistance and contribution from many foundations and companies related to heteroatom chemistry.ICHAC-11 will be held in Caen (France) in June 2014 and will be hosted by Prof. Annie-Claude Gaumont of ENSICAEN-Université de Caen Basse-Normandie.Norihiro TokitohConference Editor

Resumen
The 14th IUPAC International Symposium on Organometallic Chemistry Directed Towards Organic Synthesis (OMCOS-14) was held in Nara, Japan, 2-6 August 2007, under the auspices of IUPAC, and with cosponsorship of the Science Council of Japan and the Chemical Society of Japan. OMCOS-14 was held at Nara Centennial Hall, surrounded by National Treasures including eight World Heritage assets. This symposium is a continuation of the successful series of OMCOS meetings, previously held at Geneva (2005), Toronto (2003), Taipei (2001), Versailles (1999), Göttingen (1997), Santa Barbara (1995), Kobe (1993), Utrecht (1991), Florence (1989), Vancouver (1987), Kyoto (1985), Dijon (1983), and Fort Collins (1981). The event once again brought together industrial and academic chemists from all over the world to discuss the latest advances in new metal-mediated and -catalyzed reactions, mechanistic insights into important reactions, new preparations and applications of organometallic reagents, as well as ingenious methods for the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and materials using metals.Almost 1000 participants attended from 34 countries, one-third of them from abroad. Particularly strong representation from Asian countries such as China, Taiwan, and Korea underscores the remarkable growth of interest and development in organometallic research in these countries. The scientific program of OMCOS-14 featured 6 plenary lectures, 20 invited lectures, 28 short oral presentations, and one OMCOS Award lecture. The lectures were uniformly outstanding and held the attention of an audience fascinated by the excellent chemistry. One sensed that the warmth of the weather was matched by the warm enthusiasm that prevailed at the venue throughout the meeting. Themes that attracted attention included metal-catalyzed direct functionalization of alkenes, alkynes, and arenes, environmentally benign processes and gold-catalyzed reactions. In a particular highlight, Prof. F. Dean Toste from the University of California, Berkeley received the OMCOS-14 Award (sponsored by the Yen Chuang Foundation and Springer Verlag) for his glorious research on gold-catalyzed reactions. The scientific program also presented well-supported poster sessions comprising 546 posters of remarkably high quality. On the basis of assessments by distinguished juries, 27 posters were selected for awards of OMCOS-14 Poster Prizes, two of which included free registration for students to participate in the 23rd International Conference on Organometallic Chemistry (ICOMC-2008, co-chaired by Profs. Dixneuf and Bruneau at Rennes, France, 13ñ18 July 2008).This issue of Pure and Applied Chemistry comprises a collection of 40 papers based upon lectures delivered at OMCOS-14. It therefore offers readers an enduring and representative record of the great achievements announced during the symposium. The series continues with OMCOS-15, which will be held in Glasgow, UK (<http://www.omcos15.com/>), 26-30 July 2009, under the chairmanship of Prof. Pavel Kočovský.Koichiro OshimaConference Chairman

Resumen
This study re-examined the expression characteristics and aesthetic consciousness of Yusaku Kamekura, Ikko Tanaka, Shikeo Fukuda, Tadanori Yokoo, and Hara Kenya, representative Japanese graphic designers who have attracted the attention of the world's design industry from the 1960s to the present. In particular, the first-generation designer after World War II, Yusaku Kamekura has received worldwide attention by expressing the sun of the Japanese flag in a simple circle for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics poster, and Ikko Tanaka expressed the traditional theme simply and clearly at Nihonbuyo. While the posters of Kamekura and Tanaka expressed traditional materials in a simple and clear way from a modern perspective, Shigeo Fukuda's posters showed a modern expression trend that maximized the effect of optical illusions. Tadanori Yokoo used traditional Japanese materials in poster design and simultaneously expressed pop art and psychedelic expressions that deviated from Western modernism. Finally, Hara Kenya is actively realizing the design of blank space with the aesthetics of emptiness. The source of such modern graphic design in Japan can be ideologically pointed out as the Buddhist ideology of emptiness and Zen, Wabi & Sabi, Shutaku, Reductionism, and in terms of style, Ukiyoe, Linpa, Western modernism. Modern Japanese graphic design, which forms the mainstream with simple forms, abstract shapes, and simple colors, sought to harmonize and balance its unique cultural identity and global universality, and designers reflected their own formative language in their work. It can be said that it is a tendency of Japanese designers to express the harmony of Japanese traditional culture and Western modernism amid the trend of modernism. This aspect can be seen as a reflection of the perception of the design world to visualize Japan's modern image as an economic and a cultural power at the same time. In particular, the poster of 5 people reflected cultural traditions and aesthetic consciousness, while re-examining the glocal Hwahonyangjae of Japanese modern graphic design that aims for universal design at the same time. In particular, in the area of graphic design, where alphabetic culture design is the mainstream, Japanese design uses Chinese characters, hirakana, and katakana, forming a unique Japanese style graphic design foundation that is highly recognized worldwide. It is expected to contribute to the spread of K-Design's external awareness along with an opportunity to examine the universality and differences inherent in Korean, Chinese, and Japanese philosophies and aesthetics through a study on the expression characteristics and aesthetic consciousness of Japanese modern graphic design.

Resumen
e17567 Background: Although there have been previous analyses of various aspects of studies presented at ASCO Annual Meetings, to our knowledge no attempt has been made to investigate the nationality of abstracts. Methods: After stratification into three categories of presentation ([1] oral, including plenary and all oral presentations; [2] posters, including poster discussions; and [3] publication only [PO]), we took a random sample of 10% of the abstracts from 6 years, and assigned them nationalities using authors’ affiliations. For multinational studies, we assigned nationality following an algorithm developed for the study. Importantly, we did not appraise abstract quality or results. Results: We analyzed 2,206 of the 22,045 abstracts appearing in the Proceedings and LBA Booklets for 2001–2003 and 2006–2008. Categories were oral/poster/PO in 7.8/49.2/43.0%, and study phase (as declared by authors) was I/II/III/other, unknown or not applicable in 10.8/16.5/3.3/69.4% of abstracts. There were 332 (15.0%) multinational studies, and 1,866 (85.0%) were uninational (969 multicenter, and 905 from a single institution). The top 15 countries with higher % of studies were the US (49.0%), Italy (7.5%), Japan (5.9%), Germany (5.3%), France (4.3%), Spain (3.5%), Canada (3.4%), the UK (3.3%), South Korea (1.8%), China/Hong Kong (1.4%), Brazil (1.1%), India (1.0%), Greece and Belgium (0.9% each), and Turkey (0.8%). Exploratory analyses showed a temporal increase in multinational studies (p = 0.003), no temporal trend in the proportion of abstracts with US nationality (p = 0.315), and a higher proportion of oral and poster presentations for multinational studies (p < 0.001) and for abstracts with US nationality (p < 0.001). Conclusions: This bibliometric analysis provides a geographic overview of research presented at ASCO Annual Meetings and suggests that nearly half of all abstracts are from the US, with 20% of the 71 countries represented producing nearly 90% of all abstracts accepted for the meetings. Multinational collaboration seems to be increasing in clinical cancer research. No significant financial relationships to disclose.

Resumen
Anime is an animated film with a distinctive graphic design originating from Japan, which is widely favored by various groups. anime itself has a genre like a movie in general, but there is a slight difference from ordinary films, anime has additional genres that are not in ordinary films, such as the Ecchi, Mahou Shoujou, Seinen, Shounen, and Josei genres. Since those genres only exist in anime, this research is devoted to predicting those anime genres. The prediction will use posters from the anime itself, with the help of image processing, namely the Convolutional Neural Network method and Transfer Learning. Transfer Learning will be implanted as a comparison of the performance of the existing architecture with the architecture that will be created, whether the architecture is able to process the dataset properly. The dataset to be used is a dataset of posters and csv documents containing images and details of the anime, the dataset contains anime data from 1980 to 2021 and contains 11651 anime poster data which has different resolution sizes. The ResNet50 model has the highest accuracy rate of 48% with a loss rate of 36%, while InceptionV3 produces 35% accuracy with 69% loss. At the time of testing ResNet50 gave the smallest genre percentage value of CustomModel and InceptionV3, while CustomModel gave the highest genre value. In addition to the value, all modes also predicted the genre well. Especially InceptionV3 is able to predict the music genre, because the music genre has a very small number of datasets, and this music genre is difficult to predict by the ResNet50 and CustomModel models.

Resumen
The 13th IUPAC International Symposium on Organometallic Chemistry Directed Towards Organic Synthesis (OMCOS-13<http://omcos13.unige.ch/>) was held in Geneva, Switzerland, from 17-21 July 2005.The aim of this series of symposia is to bring together chemists from academia and industry to define and discuss the most recent developments in the areas of catalysis, new organometallic reagents and reactions, and new materials chemistry. In 2001, Sharpless, Noyori, and Knowles received the Nobel Prize for their work in this area of chemistry; and the high profile has been maintained by the award of the 2005 Nobel Prize in Chemistry to Chauvin, Grubbs, and Schrock for the development of the metathesis method in organic synthesis.OMCOS-13 had a record number of nearly 1200 participants from 41 countries, and there was an encouragingly high proportion of young scientists in attendance. Very strong Asian participation at this conference reflected the outstanding level of research and leadership in this field from countries such as Japan, China, South Korea, and Taiwan.Prof. Shengming Ma, from the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Science and the Department of Chemistry, Zhejiang University, China received the OMCOS-13 Award (sponsored by the Yen Chuang Foundation and Springer Verlag). The prize was awarded for his creative research contributions in the field of transition-metal-catalyzed reactions of allenes.Apart from the OMCOS-13 Award lecture, there were 23 plenary lectures and 20 oral communications that dealt with aspects of reactivity and chemoselectivity of main group and transition-metal organometallics. Stereoselectivity issues also figured prominently with a particular emphasis on asymmetric synthesis and catalysis. Mechanistic insights, new reagents for synthesis, new catalyst and ligand design, and ligand effects were other important topics. The quality of the 620 posters that were on display during the entire conference was also outstanding. This extraordinary poster session was highlighted with the Monday evening "poster party" and culminated in the awarding of 37 poster prizes.OMCOS-13 was held as a single session conference in an impressive lecture theater and a large exhibition area in the center of Geneva at a superb lakefront location. It was a fitting venue for the firstclass science that was presented.Thirty-seven lecturers of OMCOS-13 present their chemistry in this issue of Pure and Applied Chemistry and provide a fine recollection of last summer's conference. The 14th edition of OMCOS will be held in Nara, Japan (2-6 August 2007) under the chairmanship of Prof. Koichiro Oshima.Alexandre AlexakisOMCOS-13 Co-chairE. Peter KündigOMCOS-13 Co-chair

Resumen
HSI (Habitat Suitability Index) models are a numerical index that describes the habitat quality for individual species of aquatic organism. This models are composed of SI (suitability index) models, which show the cause-and-effect relationships between biomass of target species and the variation of individual water environmental factors. Fish are often used as the environmental indicator species of HSI models, because fish are strongly related to marine algae, sea grass, water quality, and so forth, and fish are predator high in the food chain for the aquatic system. In order to restore the marine environment of Tokyo Bay, in Japan(Fig.1), some SI models have been proposed. However, we have few precision SI models on target fish. Therefore, the objective of this study is to reveal the relationship between seasonal or daily variations of water environment components in Tokyo bay or in offshore sea area of the Pacific coast of Tokyo metro (Fig.1) and the total mass of fish living in Tokyo bay in order to create precision SI models of fish.

Resumen
Over the last century or so, English has become a global lingua franca. Today, English is the first language of 400 million people and the second language of as many as 1.4 billion (Millward & Hayes, 2012: 342). In addition, it is the language that is predominantly used on the Internet; 80% of homepages on the Web are in English, followed by German (4.5%) and Japanese (3.1%) (Millward & Hayes, 2012: 343). Needless to say, English serves as a medium of communication regardless of the speaker's first language. As English spreads globally, fragments of its lexicon also permeate native languages, enriching their lexicons. This paper is concerned with the use of English and its elements, including English-derived words, in contemporary Japan, especially within the discourse of ‘Manners Posters’, posters which promote good manners in public spaces, and advertising texts. These types of media display creative and innovative uses of English that interact with Japanese at various linguistic levels in the form of wordplay, communicating messages, sometimes even in the form of puns, to achieve particular ends in a given context. We will look at this phenomenon from the ‘glocal’ point of view – i.e., the mechanisms and effects of a fusion between ‘global English’ and local culture that create a localised or nativised taste of the global.

Resumen
Although rubella is an infectious disease that can be prevented by vaccination, there have been periodic epidemics in Japan, mainly among adult males. One of the reasons for this is the lack of interest in vaccination among the target adult male population. To clarify the reality of the discussion about rubella and provide basic resource for enlightening activities for rubella prevention, we collected and analyzed Twitter posts about rubella in Japanese between January 2010 and May 2022. We examined time series, number of tweets per account, tweeted contents, and retweet network. We found that the weekly number of rubella reports and the number of Twitter posts fluctuate simultaneously. During the 2018 rubella epidemic, the number of tweets increased due to the start of the rubella routine vaccination program and the use of cartoons to raise awareness. While 80% of the accounts posted three times or fewer during the period, some accounts posted multiple times per day for more than 12 years. Medical terms such as vaccines and antibodies were frequently used in the tweet contexts. In the retweet activity, a variety of actors, including mass media, medical professionals, and even rubella sufferers, contributed to disseminate rubella-related information.

Resumen
ABSTRACT INTRODUCTION Japan is a developed country with high use of Internet and online platforms for health information. ‘Yahoo! Answer Japan’ is the most commonly used question-and-answer service in Japan. AIM To explore the information users seek regarding breast cancer from the ‘Yahoo! Answer Japan’ web portal. METHODS The ‘Yahoo! Answer Japan’ portal was searched for the key word ‘breast cancer’ and all questions searched for the period of 1 January to 31 December 2014 were obtained. The selected questions related to human breast cancer and were not advertisements or promotional material. The questions were categorized using a coding schema. High and low access of the questions were defined by the number of view-counts. RESULTS Among the 2392 selected questions, six major categories were identified; (1) suspected breast cancer, (2) breast cancer screening, (3) treatment of breast cancer, (4) life with breast cancer, (5) prevention of breast cancer and (6) others. The highest number of questions were treatment related (28.8%) followed by suspected breast cancer-related questions (23.4%) and screening-related questions (20%). Statistical analysis revealed that the treatment-related questions were more likely to be highly accessed. CONCLUSION Content analysis of Internet question–answer communities is important, as questions posted on these sites would serve as a rich source of direct reflection regarding the health-related information needs of the general population.

Resumen
Abstract Across the countries of the world, Japan can rightly claim to be a great “Twitter nation” (Akimoto 2011). Japanese people like to tweet anytime and anywhere. Although the popularity of Twitter in Japan is often associated with the large information capacity of Japanese character sets (Wagner 2013), Neubig and Duh (2013) prove that this is not necessarily the case. Our research compares two sets of data (300 tweets for each) posted by Japanese and Americans, and demonstrates that Japanese tweets contain more monologic features, or show a higher degree of monologicity, than Americans’ tweets. Also, more than 60% of the sentence-ending forms in the Japanese tweets do not encode explicit addressee orientation. The study reveals that it is not the Japanese unique character sets, but the grammatical devices for monologization that linguistically allow Japanese users to enjoy the fullest benefits of online anonymity and addressee underspecification provided by Twitter.

Resumen
Background The changing pattern of anxiety and stress experienced by pregnant women during the COVID-19 pandemic is unknown. Objective We aimed to examine the sources of anxiety and stress in pregnant women in Japan during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods We performed content analysis of 1000 questions posted on the largest social website in Japan (Yahoo! Chiebukuro) from January 1 to May 25, 2020 (end date of the national state of emergency). The Gwet AC1 coefficient was used to verify interrater reliability. Results A total 12 categories were identified. Throughout the study period, anxiety related to going outdoors appeared most frequent, followed by anxiety regarding employment and infection among family and friends. Following the declaration of the state of national emergency at the peak of the infection, infection-related anxiety decreased, whereas anxiety about social support and mood disorders increased. Stress regarding relationships appeared frequent throughout the pandemic. Conclusions The sources of anxiety and stress in pregnant women in Japan changed during the pandemic. Our results suggest the need for rapid communications in the early phase of a pandemic as well as long-term psychosocial support to provide optimal support to pregnant women in Japan. Health care professionals should understand the changing pattern of requirements among pregnant women.

Resumen
This study analyzes blogs about male-factor infertility posted on a Japanese blogsite on a certain day in April 2014. It focuses on an understudied topic and is the first study of Japanese male infertility based on blogs. The blog format afforded anonymity to the bloggers, and our sample of 97 adults yields the largest number of individual respondents of all cross-cultural studies cited in our literature review. We extract three major themes from the analysis of the blogs, offer suggestions for a redirection of family and infertility policy in Japan, and suggest lines for further research.

Resumen
The International Conference on Organometallic Chemistry Directed Towards Organic Synthesis (OMCOS) traditionally brings together chemists from industry and academia from all over the world to present and discuss the latest advances in new metal-catalyzed and -mediated reactions, novel preparations and reactions of organometallic reagents, mechanistic insight into important metal-based reactions, and new or improved methods for the synthesis of functional molecules and materials, in which the metal plays a key role. The symposium came to the UK for the first time, following the successful series of OMCOS meetings held in Fort Collins (1981), Dijon (1983), Kyoto (1985), Vancouver (1987), Florence (1989), Utrecht (1991), Kobe (1993), Santa Barbara (1995), Göttingen (1997), Versailles (1999), Taipei (2001), Toronto (2003), Geneva (2005), and Nara (2007). Since Glasgow is the hometown of Peter Pauson, who can be regarded as the founding father of the OMCOS agenda, one can even say that OMCOS came home, after so many years. The symposium was held in the modern Royal Concert Hall in the heart of Glasgow, the largest city in Scotland and the birthplace of the industrial revolution. About 500 participants attended the symposium; particularly large delegations arrived from Japan, Germany, China, and the UK.The symposium program featured 5 plenary lectures, 18 invited lectures, 15 short communications, and one OMCOS Award Lecture (sponsored by Springer Verlag). The topics spanned the broadest area of the OMCOS agenda; particularly interesting was the direct comparison of the two approaches to metathesis, as illustrated by the key players themselves, Profs. Bob Grubbs and Richard Schrock. A number of contributions were focused on C–H activation, which culminated in the lecture delivered by Prof. Keith Fagnou of the University of Ottawa, Canada, the recipient of the OMCOS Award. Those who attended the symposium, as well as the international chemistry community, were then shocked a few months later by learning that this brilliant young scientist became a victim of the swine flu; he will be remembered by all of us.About 350 poster presentations further contributed to this exciting event and highlighted the strength, diversity, and novelty with which this science is being practiced. On the basis of the assessment by a distinguished international jury, 12 posters were selected for OMCOS-15 Poster Awards, sponsored by Springer Verlag. This issue of Pure and Applied Chemistry comprises a collection of 19 papers based on the lectures delivered at OMCOS-15, thereby offering the readers a glimpse of the fascinating chemical achievements communicated at the symposium. The series will continue with OMCOS-16, which will be held in Shanghai, China, 24-28 July 2011, under the chairmanship of Profs. AbstractThe root of Ukiyo-e can be traced back when urbanization became trend in Japan in 16 century leading the developing of merchans and actors started to write stories and novels, then combinedwith picture painting, called ehon. Ehon is picture book with full illustration and story. Ukiyo-e also used as Kabuki show poster. The source of inspiration was real life and urban culture in that time. In the beginning Ukiyo-e was only art expression but then became industry which related with literature. In the end Ukiyo-e shifted into literature visualization. Seni Ukiyo-e bergeser menjadi visualisasi seni sastra

AbstractThe astrometry course at Department of Astronomy, University of Tokyo, is reviewed as an example of educational efforts for top-class students, the possible candidates of professional astronomers, in Japan. The method of teaching is unique in the sense that it gives lectures by using incomplete text books both as MS Powerpoint slides posted at a web site, http://chiron.mtk.nao.ac.jp/~toshio/education.html, and as printed materials in the form of self-study notebooks. Also there are self-study notebooks on the related issues; the courses of relativistic astrometry, of rotational motions, of numerical astronomy, and of orbital motions, the last of which is under development.

<p align="left">The aim of this paper is to present the par yield curve for Japan’s Municipal Bonds, by examining daily data from 2002 to the present. Moreover, this paper contributes to current literature by making available for the first time additional long-run market data on Japan’s Municipal Bonds, and thereby enabling economists and practitioners to analyze the large municipal bond market of Japan in detail. We also investigate the fit of the well-known parametric and spline methods in their standard measures, and are able to show that the spline method does, in fact, fit well as in previous studies. In keeping with our aim to make these data more widely available, we posted the data on the following website and expect to update this regularly: http://www.mcnnns77.net.</p>

The Japanese linguistic landscape is a dynamically vibrant area with words and phrases appearing in a vast array of locations written in a wide range of scripts, fonts, sizes and colours, and all serving a complex and interconnected array of functions. This visual landscape of shop signs, street signs, advertising posters, information boards and vending machines is complemented by a similar vibrancy and dynamism in more private domains such as restaurant menus, product packaging, clothing, newspaper articles, magazine stories and TV advertising. Immediately striking an observer of these contexts is the fact that, although the Japanese language has a highly complex writing system incorporating an admixture of logographic, syllabic and alphabetic characters, a great many of the words and phrases in Japanese social contexts are transcribed in Latin alphabet characters. Because the vast majority of these lexical items are either direct imports of words from the English language (often termed ‘loanwords' or ‘borrowings') or domestic creations based on English vocabulary (often termed ‘wasei eigo'/‘Japan-created English'), those who are familiar with the English language are assisted in their orientation around Japan by this pervasive use of English-based vocabulary.

Resumen
Following the I st congress in Besancon in 1992, the 2nd Japan-France Congress on Mechatronics was held at Takamatsu City in Japan from November 1 to 3, 1994. The congress was co-sponsored by Kagawa University, the Japan Society for Precision Engineering, and l'Institut des Microtechniques de Franche-Comte. A total of 282 persons participated in the congress, 49 from France, 209 from Japan, and 24 from other countries including China, U.S., Turkey, Korea, and Switzerland. Researchers and engineers from a total of 15 countries participated in the congress. The congress continues to become more international and exciting. There are six sessions at the congress. The session names and the number of the papers belonging to each are as follows: (1) Mechatronics, 33 papers; (2) Robotics, 53 papers; (3) Sensors, 26 papers; (4) Vision, 33 papers; (5) Microelectro Mechanical Systems, 20 papers; and (6) CIM & Systems, 21 papers. The total number of papers 186. Additionally, three keynote speakers discussed the current status and future of the mechatronics technologies. The papers were presented at the oral sessions and the poster sessions. In this special issue, 11 papers from these fields are presented to describe the current technological status in Japan. Takamatsu is charming old city near Osaka. The congress was held at the exhibition center in Intelligent Park in Takamatsu, which was newly developed as the technological center of the area. The congress was held at such a location so that participants from abroad could gain a feel for ordinary life in Japan. In addition to the congress, there were two technical tours before and after the congress. The technical tour to the industries in Takamatsu showed the vivid medium size manufacturers in Japan. It is the another viewpoint contrary to the huge companies of Japan. During the congress, there were warm and friendly technological interactions between Japan and Europe. This should be further encouraged, and more countries should be included in the congress. The 3rd French-Japanese Congress on Mechatronics will be held at Besancon, France in 1996. It will also be the first European-Asia Congress. I hope that many researchers and engineers from all over the world, will participate in the congress and that the warm and friendly atmosphere of the past congress is provided at the next congress.

Resumen
Knowledge of the chemistry and biochemistry of vanadium has increased enormously since the early 1980s, particularly that of vanadium(III), (IV), and (V). This led to remarkable developments in the understanding and recognition of the properties of vanadium compounds. A consequence of these new insights has been numerous applications of vanadium complexes ranging from therapeutics to catalysis and from new materials to green chemistry. Many of the more recent advances were presented at the 6th International Vanadium Symposium held 17‚Äì19 July 2008 in Lisbon, Portugal. The conference included 56 oral communications and 52 poster presentations. The following 12 papers are a selection from the oral communications presented. This conference attracted over 100 participants from 27 countries and 4 continents. The inorganic chemistry of vanadium, application of vanadium chemistry in catalysis and organic synthesis, and biological aspects of vanadium chemistry were discussed in invited lectures as well as in poster communications. The Vanadium Award, a prize first introduced at the 4th International Vanadium Symposium held in 2004 in Szeged, Hungary to recognize an outstanding contributor to the advancement of vanadium science, was awarded in 2008 to Prof. Toshikazu Hirao of the Osaka University, Japan, and his contribution is the first paper presented herein. The additional contributions that embody this issue are mostly papers covering aspects related to catalytic applications of vanadium compounds, including their use as functional models of vanadiumdependent haloperoxidases. Electron transfer in oxo and non-oxo vanadium complexes, the use of NMR to characterize the complexes, and synthesis of new polyoxovanadates are the subjects of other papers included. We look forward to the 7th International Vanadium Symposium to be held in Japan in 2010, where additional studies on the role of vanadium in life, the vanadium nutritional essentiality, vanadium toxicity, and vanadium therapy, as well as new contributions to the use of vanadium compounds in catalysis, including "green chemical" industrial applications, will certainly be presented.João Costa PessoaConference Chair

Resumen
In a literal sense, the word ma (間) means “interval” or “gap.” With considerable enthusiasm, since the early 1960s, Japanese thinkers and design practitioners have developed ma into an abstract and spiritual concept. With the use of interpretive research and ethnographic methods, this article explores how ma, commonly understood as ambiguity, has been deeply appreciated in Japanese culture. To find out more about ma, the author interviewed Nagai Kazumasa and Sugiura Kohei, the two eminent Japanese Design Movement (JDM) poster designers, in their Tokyo design offices in 2008. Specifically, from a case study research of one of Sugiura's renowned works, the author found that the concept of ma has been elevated by Sugiura to a religio-aesthetic and spiritual status. Sugiura has used ma as both medium and message in maintaining his intellectual and artistic position in Japan and Asia.
