The port induced freight can cause traffic congestion problems in city ports if road freight transportation is used. The secondary congestion problem arises from the pooling of the trucks at the port gates because of the delays of the port operations. The absence of the truck parking areas inside the port causes additional truck trips between the port and auxiliary truck servicing areas around the port. For reducing the impacts of the associated problems of the port induced truck traffic, truck parking areas can be used as buffer zones between the port and city. The purpose of this study is to develop a Decision Support System (DSS) with using multimethod simulation and cost optimization model for the capacity design of a truck parking area for a city port. The preliminary design of the parking area is used to estimate the development cost and outputs of the simulation model is coupled for the capacity optimization for truck arrival scenarios. The methodology is implemented for a case study of the İzmir city port in Turkey. The results of the study indicated that significantly different parking area capacities are required for different truck dwell times for the time restricted and unrestricted truck arrivals

As the rendezvous and hinges of land and water transportation, port is the distributing center of industrial and agricultural products and imports and exports materials; it is an interactive connection point between inland and outside worlds, an interactive space between people and commodities; it is also an important area for promoting the connection between inland and the outside world. This article mainly explores the necessity of developing the landscape of the port of Huangshi, and discusses the difference between old and new landscape design of Huangshsi wharfs, to clarify the importance of integrated human and nature landscape. Port landscape is regarded as urban public landscape, which eventually promotes the infrastructure development of "Central Triangle" cities.

The great number of actors in port city regions, such as port authorities, municipalities, national governments, private companies, societal groups, and flora and fauna, need to develop shared visions. Collaborative approaches that focus on combined values can help achieve long-term resilience and enable a sustainable and just coexistence of port and city actors within the same territory. However, the sheer focus on economic profit generated by port activities overshadows and ignores equally essential cultural, societal, and environmental values and needs. The lack of pluralities in planning and decision-making processes creates challenges for the cohabitation of the many actors and their interests within port-city regions. On the one hand, contemporary spaces in port cities cannot be classified and defined by traditional dichotomies anymore. On the other hand, the perception of spatial and institutional boundaries between port and city leads to a positivistic-driven definition of a rigid and inflexible, line-like interface physically and mentally separating the port from the urban activities and stakeholders, neglecting the inseparable character of many parts of our society. By investigating and re-imagining the future port-development plans within the historic mining town of Kirkenes, located around 400 km above the Arctic Circle in Northern Norway, the aim of this article is to explore and combine the concepts of negative and positive porosity and liminality and arrive at a renewed perception of the port cityscape, which can function as dynamic thresholds inbetween the multiple dualities and realities of various port and city actors. The article bridges the theoretical/conceptual sphere of urban porosity and the practical approaches of liminal design. By using Design Fiction as a tool for creating new, innovative, and pluralistic port city narratives, the article contributes to contemporary research that aims for imaginary, value-based, and history-informed approaches to designing future-proof, resilient, just, and sustainable port cities.

The city-port context involves a decisive reality for the economic development of territories and nations, capable of significantly influencing the conditions of well-being and quality of life, and of making the Circular City Model (CCM) operational, preserving and enhancing seas and marine resources in a sustainable way. This can be achieved through the construction of appropriate production and consumption models, with attention to relations with the urban and territorial system. This paper presents an adaptive decision-making process for Naples (Italy) commercial port’s development strategies, aimed at re-establishing a sustainable city-port relationship and making Circular Economy (CE) principles operative. The approach has aimed at implementing a CCM by operationalizing European recommendations provided within both the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) framework—specifically focusing on goals 9, 11 and 12—and the Maritime Spatial Planning European Directive 2014/89, to face conflicts about the overlapping areas of the city-port through multidimensional evaluations’ principles and tools. In this perspective, a four-step methodological framework has been structured applying a place-based approach with mixed evaluation methods, eliciting soft and hard knowledge domains, which have been expressed and assessed by a core set of Sustainability Indicators (SI), linked to SDGs. The contribution outcomes have been centred on the assessment of three design alternatives for the East Naples port and the development of a hybrid regeneration scenario consistent with CE and sustainability principles. The structured decision-making process has allowed us to test how an adaptive approach can expand the knowledge base underpinning policy design and decisions to achieve better outcomes and cultivate a broad civic and technical engagement, that can enhance the legitimacy and transparency of policies.

The distribution of ports in Indonesia is not evenly distributed if seen from Gross Regional Domestic Product (PDRB), in this case is Dumai City which has a port in the Indonesian archipelagic sea lane (ALKI) 1, although it is in strategic location, it is not reflected from Dumai city PDRB that can be categorized as lagging compared to other Port cities in Indonesia. To optimize the utilization of existing ports and increase economic growth in Dumai City, PT. Pelindo 1 of Dumai territory plans to develop port capacity by building a special segment of container loading and unloading activities based on the increasingly cheap vessels of containers docked at Dumai Port. To increase the phenomenon that occurs, the research is intended to design the conceptual design of port development by using dynamic system. Deep water coastline and ecological environment are natural resources that the development of port city will depend on. Driven by economy globalization, port city development is the inevitable choice to guarantee economic flow and promote sustainable development of trading. Especially in newly rising developing countries, the construction of port city and green city should be organically combined, and the ecological environment protection becomes the important work for construction of green port city. Meishan Island in Ningbo is just at the critical period for determing the long-term development orientation. Meishan Island is the only undeveloped area in Ningbo City, which has deep water coastline, land resources, ecological environment and cultural tourism resources. In early 2007, China Academy of Urban Planning and Design is appointed by Beilun District Government of Ningbo City to perform a demonstration of long-term development orientation for Meishan Island. The topic is “Investigation of Ningbo Meishan Island Development”. The development plan and ecological environment protection plan for deep water port city was investigated on the base of this project, and some references for investigation were provided on ecological environment protection plan for deep water port city. The natural geographical condition of Ningbo Meishan Island was introduced as well as its role in development of regional economy and society; performed factor analysis for ecological environment of Meishan Island. Considering the level of ecological protection plan, Meishan Island is divided into three areas by functions which are port city development zone, ecological buffer zone and ecological protection zone.

Most port cities have a long history of investment in the waterfront, adapting these spaces to improve the quality of life of its inhabitants and increase the tourist interest of the city, in a 50-year process of waterfront regeneration that started in the late 1960s. Even though one of the drivers of development in today’s port cities continues to be the transfer of knowledge and experiences between different cases, not all these cities have achieved their goals, nor have all done so in a sustainable way. This article exposes a new methodology, motivated by the need to carry out a comparative study of good practices of port–city integration for twelve specific cases. To enable a comparison of intangible realities such as port–city integration, it is mandatory to have a common benchmark to quantify features of cities from different cases. The 3DPortCityMeasure methodology is intended to provide a framework for analysing port-city integration, with results that supply an immediate understanding of each case. This tool enables direct comparative evaluation and provides support for land use planning and urban design approaches. The results show that the proposed approach for measuring intangible factors in the field of the port–city relationship is a very useful tool, novel in this discipline, and fully applicable to other cases and other urban issues.

Abstract Sea transport and seaborne trade have increased significantly in the past few decades. As sea traffic hubs, ports have high risks because of the limitation in manoeuvrability, number of vessels, and land-based port activities. In the coastal city of Limassol, water and air pollution has been anecdotally attributed to port activities. The STEAM project (Sea Traffic Management in the Eastern Mediterranean, INTEGRATED/0916/0063, [1]) aims to set up a monitoring plan to aid in the identification and mitigation of pollution sources. The project followed a participatory process, where port stakeholders and scientists were consulted and included in the ideation, design and implementation process. This participatory process developed a greater sense of stakeholder ownership in the environmental monitoring programs and facilitated their adoption. According to the consultation process, air and water quality are the most important factors to monitor. Five static and one mobile multi-sensor monitoring stations make up the air quality monitoring design for the Port of Limassol. Three air quality stations were installed within the port area along with two stations near the anchorage area. Two environmental data buoys and two oil detectors make up the water quality monitoring stations. The oil detectors will be placed within the port. One environmental data buoy will be placed downstream of the port, while the second buoy will be placed between the port entrance, the Limassol Marina and the anchorage area.

Abstract The present paper concerns the design of a city port business model incorporating Public Private Partnership schemes. Extensive literature review was acquired, in order to fully comprehend the organizational schemes and state of practice of Public Private Partnerships at ports. A survey was conducted at the port of Volos, based on questionnaire and interviews, to define the functions and services of the port, which could benefit from the private involvement and improve its role as a transport interchange for all involved stakeholders. The collected data were analyzed, using a modified version of Analytic Hierarchy Process, which revealed the relevant importance of port functions and services. Three different management models were considered to tackle the most important issues that came up during the analysis and they were evaluated based on the literature; the current one, a landlord management model and a partial privatization management model. The results of this process indicated, that the landlord management model would be the most effective for the particular case of the port of Volos. The landlord model seemed to perform better in improving both the operation of the organization and the level of passenger satisfaction, through its increased management flexibility, due to the segmentation of services and reduction of bureaucracy, as well as the additional investment capital that it can attract. Based on the proposed management model, actions and measures improving on the port’s business model are recommended.

Ports are clearly demarcated structures on land and water. They are fenced in, easily recognizable on satellite and orthophoto images, and they have specific functions. This apparent clarity of ports, their function and outline, in relation to nearby urban and rural areas, becomes more complex when explored through the lens of land use, that is the existing and planned future functional dimension or socio-economic purpose of the land. In contrast to urban and rural areas, where land use has been mapped and defined for centuries, the use and function of land and water in port areas has long been multifunctional and not defined on land use maps. This raises questions about the role and understanding of port territory in relation to neighboring spaces, past, and present. This article first defines land use and describes its historical development. Scholars from various disciplines, including geographers, planners, and economists, have addressed the issue of land use in port areas. Land use patterns have emerged over time and are based on earlier demarcations of port areas and distinctions between port and city. As shown by the historical port city borders in Hamburg, Rotterdam, and Koper, these delimitations can change over time, by location and by function. The land use register has only recently been harmonized at the European level. European and national registers distinguish existing and planned land use in port areas differently. Mixed uses prevail in new port interventions, creating a new kind of permeability or porosity; that is, areas where port, urban and rural functions merge. New land use porosity is a particular state of land use (on both sides of the boundaries of port areas) that goes beyond the physical boundaries marked by fences. Land use porosity effectively creates land use continuity, a functional porosity that serves as a hidden blueprint for future planning. Understanding land use porosity can provide a foundation for novel approaches to the development of transition strategies that are needed to address contemporary challenges, including climate change and sea level rise, digitization, and new work and life practices in port city regions. In conclusion, we note that due to the porosity of land use patterns, the separation between the present port and the city is beginning to crumble. However, this process has yet to be made fully visible and used as a basis for design.

The Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah Causeway project in Kuwait includes the design, build, completion and maintenance of a major road link (Doha Link) between Shuwaikh Port in Kuwait City and the Doha Peninsula. The main structure in the link is the 7.7km marine viaduct which crosses Sulaibikhat Bay and has been constructed using the full-span launching method. This paper gives an overview of the design and construction of this challenging project, and explains how these have been optimised to ensure successful delivery within the demanding programme constraints.

This paper reports on research in the area of Green Urbanism and new models for urban growth and neighborhoods, as cities need to transform from a fossil-based model to a model based on sustainable energy sources. The paper deals with cross-cutting issues in architecture, landscape architecture and urban design and addresses the question of how we can best cohesively integrate all aspects of energy systems, transport systems, waste and water management, passive and active strategies, natural ventilation and so on, into contemporary urban design of Eco-Cities with an improved environmental performance of cities. This text reflects upon practical strategies focused on increasing sustainability beyond and within the scope of individual buildings and provides a context for a general discourse about the regeneration of the city centre, its transformation to a sustainable model, and discusses how urbanism is affected (and can be expected to be even more affected in future) by the paradigms of ecology. Recent examples for the application of such urban design principles are the two proposals for the Australian city of Newcastle: the City Campus and Port City projects. These case studies illustrate that it is less environmentally damaging to stimulate growth within the established city centre rather than sprawling into new, formerly un-built areas. Three steps from passive building design to active mechanical equipment. The designer needs to take full advantage of basic, passive building strategies first, before adding mechanical active equipment. Motto: More with less. The entire urban metabolism is based on energy supply. However, a new symbiosis between countryside and city is emerging: The century-old tension between rural and urban might finally get resolved, where the city stops to grow at the expense of its rural hinterland.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to detect the determinants of cruise tourists’ expenditure level during their visits to an emergent Mediterranean port city. The article also aims to discuss its findings and contrast them with previous similar studies in other territorial contexts. Design/methodology/approach The study is based on surveys conducted on 1,010 cruise tourists that visited the city of Tarragona (Catalonia) during 2017. An ordered logit model is implemented to measure the impact of different variables related to the tourists’ characteristics and their activities developed at the destination. Findings Results underline diverse significant influences of multiple factors on the expenditures, such as the travel party, the age of the visitors, the length of stay and the tourists’ activities in the city. Although no incidence has been detected of variables related to the satisfaction with the visit of the cruise passengers in general, a positive association has been identified for those cruise passengers travelling on super-sized ships. Originality/value This study tests the effect of different variables that the literature pinpointed as determinants of the cruise tourists’ expenditures as well as other variables that have been underexplored in existing studies. The findings of this article are of special value for public and private organisations to optimally manage and market cruise tourism and boost the local economic impact.

Soviet government in Lithuania was in power almost for a half of century. This system solved urban problems almost in the same way as the rest of the world. However, Soviet power some topics tried to interpret on its own way and some of them simply simulated. Urban design practice and theory were based on the foundation of ideology and socialist economics, so the urban fabric of Klaipėda city was stretched. Anyway, those 45 years were very important for the city. It was a time, when the urban development hasn’t stopped. It has left its own landmarks and gave some new impulses. Urban processes of this period, especially connected with port’s development, have made a great impact on the plan of city. And some of those processes are still working. The vulnerability to the insecurity of cities, and how best to address them, have been subject to considerable discussions. With the rising crime rate in cities in Nigeria, households have provided for their security, particularly with structures in the building, streets and neighbourhoods. Observation of streets and houses in Greater Port Harcourt City Area show high fences (some with the addition of razor wires), gates to streets manned by security personnel, use of CCTV, electrified gates and fences, burglary proofing of windows, doors and even roofs. This research reviews strategy adopted by residents in curbing crime across different neighbourhoods of Greater Port Harcourt City. The study utilizes a survey research methodology based on data obtained from four hundred and ninety–eight (498) respondents drawn from four neighbourhoods selected purposively (three from planned neighbourhoods in the inner city and one large neighbourhood in the peri-urban area). The study followed a multi-stage framework. Five streets in the inner city and fifteen streets in the peri-urban area were randomly selected in the study neighbourhoods. This was followed by the selection of twenty houses on each street using the systematic sampling method. In each house, one household head was randomly picked for questionnaire administration. The results revealed that the use of urban design elements to control crime between the inner-city neighbourhoods and the neighbourhoods in the urban periphery of the city differed significantly. The inner-city made greater use of natural surveillance to control crime whereas the peri-urban area utilized target hardening. State actors and non-state actors were used for crime control across the neighbourhoods; however, income status was a key determinant of preference. The high income was favourable to the formal instrument of state power, the police while the low income preferred the non-state actors, the local vigilante. This study recommends an integrated crime prevention strategy for the entire city; adequate funding of security by the Government, the provision of amenities and street furniture, the use of neighbourhood plans that promotes defensible space in emerging areas, the introduction of technology and community policing in crime prevention will achieve far greater long-term security for the Greater Port Harcourt metropolis. As part of an ongoing research program to develop local seismic engineering ground motion parameters for implementation in the Jordanian Seismic Building Code, a practical contribution is made to determine the local site coefficient (S) for the Port City of Aqaba, southern Jordan. Employing probabilistic peak ground acceleration estimates using FRISK, the overall dynamic site response design spectrum is obtained through the calculated response spectrum based on selected soil-rock column profiles applying SHAKE91. This work characterizes ancient mortars used in construction of the Bronze Age Minoan port at Kommos in Crete. The port dates from c. 1850 BCE with port facilities at the harbor and residences on the Central hillside and the Hilltop. A Greek, Phoenician, and Roman sanctuary overlies the administrative center. The first step collected representative samples from the different construction phases, previous conservation interventions, exposure to different environmental factors, and different material composition. From these 10 mortar samples were analyzed using stereo- and digital microscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray Fluorescence (XRF), and Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) to determine texture, morphology, mineralogical, and physico-chemical properties. The physico-chemical and mineralogical analyses divided the samples into two groups: lime binder mortars and earthen binder mortars. The main minerals identified in the samples are calcite, quartz, dolomite, illite, albite, kaolinite, and vermiculite. Analysis of local clay showed that local materials were used in the production of these mortars. The analysis of mortar samples with stereomicroscopy, XRF, and FTIR showed that the samples are mainly composed of calcite and silicates in major quantities along with aluminum, magnesium, and iron oxide in minor quantities. A wide variety of local aggregates and ceramic fragments were used in the production of these ancient mortars. The mortar condition resulted in a decay state that needs conservation interventions. This characterization of the ancient mortars was important for the design of compatible restoration mortars.

The 4 August 2020 Port of Beirut blast caused material damage to an estimated 77,000 apartments located across 10,000 buildings within a 3 km radius of the blast, impacting around 300,000, people predominantly in the municipality of Karantina, which is situated adjacent to the Port of Beirut. The blast shed light on the instability and unsustainable development approach of the city of Beirut since well before the French mandate circa 1921–1940. The impact of the blast provides an opportunity to reassess the relationship between many relevant aspects of the city planning including but not limited to: the relationship of the city to its suburbs, waterfront, and city center; the lack of local planning and cross sectorial master plans; the preservation of the heritage versus the complexity of its urban development; the city growth and increased haphazard urbanization; the infrastructure/service systems that have over the years become increasingly deficient; the lack of public spaces; impacts on urban climate; and the urban divide and inequality that have only grown deeper since the blast, all of which have a combined and adverse impact on the quality of city life. This paper analyzes the most suitable indicators that one must highlight within the context of Beirut city to propose a better and sustainable quality of life with a focus on areas that were significantly impacted by the recent POB blast, namely Karantina. Examples of indicators which were analyzed include sustainable urban design, open spaces, heritage, infrastructure, and urban fabric. The results indicated that the following four main urban design features help improve the quality of life in Karantina, including: (i) connecting areas of Karantina and Mar Mkhael through the reactivation of vacant lots; (ii) reactivation of Ibrahim Bacha and El-Khodr Streets; (iii) redefining the historical El Khodr Mosque boundary and reclaiming its role as an urban landmark; and (iv) integration of classified built heritage. These parameters are necessary to improve the quality of life. The benefits of community participation are also assessed in the improvement and sustainable planning of the city of Beirut.

One of the fishing ports in Makassar City is a Paotere fish landing station. The Paotere fish landing station is in the northern part of Makassar City and is located on Jl. Sabutung I No.3, Kelurahan Gusung, Ujung Tanah District, Makassar City and is the center of a fishing port that has many activities and is related to fish auction needs, such as auction, fish unloading, and ship supplies. This study aims to identify fish landing base areas in the city of Makassar, and in general, can be a reference for the Makassar City Government in determining development strategies in planning and designing fish landing bases in Makassar and Sulawesi cities. This study is based on a rationalistic descriptive paradigm with a normative architectural criticism approach which refers to the urban design elements of Hamid Shirvani's theory (grand concept / grand theory). The results of this study indicate the need for planning and redesigning the Paotere fish landing station area in Makassar city.

The study examined digital marketing and performance of selected banks in Port Harcourt. A descriptive survey research design was used for the study. The study adopted structure questionnaire instrument for data collection with a judgmental sampling method targeted on three money deposit banks which include, First Bank Plc, Access Bank Plc and First City Monument Banks in Port Harcourt. The sample size was 30 and 10 respondents were selected from the three banks and the unit of analysis are customers, managers, internal control managers and general managers. Data collected were analyzed with Pearson product moment correlation (PPMC) and simple regression analysis statistical tools at 0.05 percent level of significance. The result showed that there is a significant relationship between content marketing, social media marketing, etc. and customer patronage of selected banks in Port Harcourt. The study recommended among others that customer care service unit should create a friendly relationship with their customers.

As a result, the industry has accumulated a significant body of academic research outcomes over the last two decades. This Special Issue aims to examine the various themes in recent sustainability studies, particularly relating to shipping, port, and maritime logistics, and identify and discuss the key topics emerging in sustainability in the industry. The liquefied natural gas (LNG) is considered a viable solution to replace oil-based engines (common in heavy-duty truck and naval industry) reducing the environmental impact in the transport sector. Since liquefaction plants represent energy intensive processes, the best configurations/operation assessment is of primary importance. In this paper, a novel general procedure for the thermodynamic design and optimization, engineering design and off-design evaluation for small-scale LNG production systems is presented. The procedure can be used for the complete design and performance evaluation of plug & play facilities at filling stations for vehicles/boats, with the contemporary benefits of reducing pollutant emission in the city/port area and operating as electrical storage, coupled with renewable generators. Furthermore, the procedure has been applied to a case study (ferry boat operating at the main canal in the port of Ravenna, Italy), evaluating the optimal size for the integrated wind plant by minimizing the electricity introduction into the grid. The obtained results show 78 kW as optimal wind size, allowing the LNG plant to operate 187 h/year in design and 4720 h/year in off-design conditions, with electricity surplus around 33 MWh/year. A prototype will be installed to reduce pollutant emissions and test this technology as a storage option for renewable sources.

Reliable transportation services can be achieved by optimizing the utilization of transportation facilities and infrastructure as well as operational aspects. Limited resources in management is a challenge that can be overcome with several strategies, one of which is through the cooperation of the parties. This study aims to analyze the strategy for implementing the Covid-19 control policy in the management of the Ulee Lheue port in Banda Aceh. This research is survey research with a qualitative approach, using SWOT. The sample in this study amounted to 15 respondents. The results of this study indicate that the SWOT analysis at the Ulee Lheue ferry port obtained strength in infrastructure, land resources, and departure information. In terms of opportunities, it is found that the rate of population growth, routes to Sabang, the tourism sector and markets are not limited. For threats, namely the pandemic problem that has not ended, so that business activities related to ports may be reduced. There are many obstacles that check point officers face when carrying out checks at the border. Catching people entering Aceh's Ulee Lheu Port requires a different strategy. Inspection needs to adjust to the availability of check point infrastructure, personnel, and traffic conditions in the area itself. Sea/Port transportation controls are carried out to reduce interactions, travel restrictions, and gathering of people in crowded places because the most worrying means of spreading the virus are transportation, especially public transport. Based on the results of this study, the authors suggest to the Management of the Ulee Lheue port in Banda Aceh to be able to improve the physical/infrastructure improvements on a regular basis by utilizing the initial investment and also annual cash inflow from the pattern of business cooperation with other parties, if the budget is against the Detailed Engineering Design (DED) that is it is not yet certain when it will be implemented.

The circular city is emerging as new concept and form of practice in sustainable urban development. This is a response to the complex and pressing challenges of urbanization, as highlighted in the New Urban Agenda (NUA). The concept of a “circular city” or “circular city-region” derives from the circular economy model applied in the spatial territorial dimension. It can be associated with the concept of a “self-sustainable” regenerative city, as stated in paragraph n.71 of the NUA. This paper aims to develop an extensive form of “screening” of circular economy actions in emerging circular cities, focusing on eight European historic port cities self-defined as “circular”. The analysis is carried out as a review of circular economy actions in the selected cities, and specifically aims to identify the key areas of implementation in which the investments in the circular economy are more oriented, as well as to analyze the spatial implications of the reuse of buildings and sites, proposing a set of criteria and indicators for ex-ante and ex-post evaluations and monitoring of circular cities. Results show that the built environment (including cultural heritage), energy and mobility, waste management, water management, industrial production (including plastics, textiles, and industry 4.0 and circular design), agri-food, and citizens and communities can be adopted as strategic areas of implementation of the circular city model in historic cities, highlighting a lack of indicators in some sectors and identifying a possible framework for “closed” urban metabolism evaluation from a life-cycle perspective, focusing on evaluation criteria and indicators in the (historic) built environment.

This is a design based research forum that attempts to facilitate a landscape of decision-making that stimulates an integrated approach to design within the urban context.</p><p>The Urbanheart program has developed into a very successful teaching, research and public/community relations program. It has not only secured an ongoing relationship with various planning authorities, but its core of industrial partnerships has expanded to include four regional councils (Bendigo, Ballarat, Geelong, Surfcoast and Warrnambool), three metropolitan municipalities (Melbourne City, Port Phillip, Wyndham and Maribyrnong) and close links with various Victorian State government departments.</p><p>The program actively integrates postgraduate students from Architecture, Urban Design, Landscape Architecture and Planning. The different scales of resolution at which the unit operates would welcome further integration with students from Mechanical Engineering, Art and Design, Information Technology and Environmental Science.</p>

So that the data obtained indicate that the physical condition of floating around the net keramba Tanjungmas Semarang blackened water greenish colours, smells, and oily. Application design fitoremidiasi by Lemna perpusilla utilize water plants and fish seed banding continued with the observed results. As well as direct application on the KJA in the waters of Tanjung Mas with lemna and seed density setting fish whitefish. HIV / AIDS in Indonesia was concentrated in certain population groups (key populations) who have a high risk of HIV transmission related to their behavior, one of which is loading worker. This study aims to determine the relationship of characteristics and social pressures with risk behaviors of HIV / AIDS transmission in loading workers in Port of Padang City. This type of research was analytic with cross sectional design. This research was conducted from January - April 2019 at the Port of Padang City. The study population numbered 834 people and a sample of 90 people. Sampling was done by cluster sampling technique. Primary data collection is done by interview using a questionnaire. Data analysis includes univariate analysis and bivariate analysis. The results showed no relationship between age, education, and ethnicity with HIV/AIDS risk behavior in loading workers. There was a relationship between social pressure and HIV/AIDS risk behavior in loading workers. It is recommended to Koperbam to provide information routinely on HIV / AIDS risk behavior in loading workers. It is also recommended that Koperbam cooperate with the local health center to carry out an HIV check.

This research deals with the relationship between motivation factors and unsafe action on passenger ship crews in Tanjung Pinang. This type of research is an analytical survey using cross sectional design aimed at explaining a situation by analyzing the relationship between individual factors and work factors with unsafe action on the crew of passenger ships in Tanjung Pinang City. The study was conducted at the port of Sri Bintan Pura in Tanjung Pinang City. The population in this study is the crew of passenger ships with the position of Captain, Mualim, KKM (Head of Engine Room), and Oiler in the port of Sri Bintan Pura Tanjungpinang City with the destination of Tanjungpinang to Batam. Based on the results of the study indicate that there is a significant relationship between motivation and unsafe action. In the multivariate test, it is known that motivation variable has an influence on unsafe action with p value = 0.019 and exp (B) value of 8.577, which means that the motivation variable in the low category will cause unsafe action to be high by 8.577 times compared to the high motivation category. It can be conclude that the majority of respondents classified as young, have a high level of education, a new tenure, have a high income, good knowledge of occupational health and safety, high motivation, and unsafe action. Based on the bivariate analysis obtained levels of education, years of service, knowledge, motivation, related to unsafe action.

In the article, the author analyzes the innovative methods, employed by the Russian hydraulic engineer Nikolai Mikhailovich Gersevanov in the course of the stability analysisperformed in respect of cribwork quays. The author addresses one of the little known works, written by this Russian architect of industrial buildings. The work in question covers the application of logic algebra formulas to the substantiation of the stability of foundations of quays and port structures; it is entitled “The Application of Mathematical Logic to the Analysis of Structures”. N.M. Gersevanov employs his method of logical-mathematical substantiation of stability of cribwork quays as an example in the second part of his research. The author also analyzes the features of construction of crib piers, the forces that they are exposed to, and any possible reasons for the destruction of cribwork quays. In this article, the problem of design of cribwork quays is tied to the problem of construction performed in the context of natural (hydrologic and tectonic) calamities, such as earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, and landslides. City and port management amid natural calamities represents an innovative challenge to be met by contemporary architects. The analysis of conditional propositions, employed in the work, written by N.M. Gersevanov, has proven his paper's novelty. The author of this article believes that antecedent and consequent are connected by the symbol of relevant (or nomological) implicationin hispropositions.

The cost of building a skyscraper remains the major obstacle with the need to source out new materials other than steel and concrete. Also, moving people around efficiently in super tall buildings is another challenge for engineers keeping in mind the unique designs that architects are looking after. Once all design aspects are concluded and approved by different stakeholders, it will move on to the next phase which is construction, that is called: Reality.Construction realization is the focus of this paper. It will discuss the actual facts and surprises which will be encountered during the transformation of the design into shop drawings and tangible concrete. A physical case study from a busy district in the city of Dubai is the main focus of this study along with the core challenges and obstacles faced the team during the execution phase. Politicians, planners, and mapmakers have long used mapping to depict selected spaces, to document natural and humanmade changes within them, and to identify spaces where planning intervention is needed or can be helpful. Recent innovations involving big data, GIS-based research and digital datasets offer opportunities for maps and mapping that can lead to a better understanding of the interrelation of spatial, social, and cultural elements over time and to facilitate planning. A close analysis of the historic transformation of the built environment (such as land use, land ownership, infrastructures), the development of institutional structures (municipal boundaries) and the narrative that accompanies them (as embedded in maps and plans) through historical geo-spatial mapping can facilitate the identification of ‘gaps,’ where spatial, institutional, or cultural opportunities and challenges exist and where planning can be useful. Such an understanding can provide novel insights into the conditions and complexity of multiple transitions (energy, digital, technological) and provide a better foundation for future design. Our use of geo-spatial mapping to identify ‘gaps’ builds upon the work of Patrick Geddes and Jacqueline Tyrwhitt, who promoted the concept of survey-before-plan. As Tyrwhitt argued in 1950, the consistent overlaying of information can help us see patterns and outliers and derive meaning from huge, complex territories and large amounts of data (Tyrwhitt, 1950b). We can then better identify planning opportunities. Following an analysis of mapping as an analytical tool, we explore questions of sources, time, representation, and scale in the use of mapping at a time of increased availability of data. This article represents an initial effort to analyze the role of mapping as a tool of understanding, communicating, and ultimately planning through the lens of port city regions and their development over time. As a first step, it proposes conducting observations of historical geospatial mapping in port city regions in Europe: the Nieuwe Waterweg in the Netherlands, the Thames in the UK, and the Elbe in Germany. Probing the challenges and opportunities presented by historical sources, questions of representation and scale and data layers, the article concludes by proposing historical geo-spatial maps and mapping as a tool of display and comparative research and as a ‘gap finder.’

Purpose – This article discusses a type of activity, level of consumption, and cruise ship tourists’ satisfaction in a destination to understand the perspectives of cruise tourism in the city. Design/Methodology – The research was conducted during 2018 by personal interviews or website questionnaires among 163 cruise tourists in the city of Rijeka, Croatia. The survey included 15 questions that were categorized into five thematic units. The data were processed by descriptive statistics. Findings – According to a slight increase in travelers’ consumption but also their overall satisfaction, the results suggest an increase in destination attractiveness. The economic results are still at a modest level. A set of measures has been proposed to improve tourism services in the destination. Originality of the research – Given those cruise companies are permanently on the lookout for attractive destinations, it is up to cities to attract cruise ships to their ports. It is necessary to assess and check the tourists’ experience of a cruise destination permanently so that the offerings of port city can be adjusted to the changing demands of passengers. Limiting factors associated with cruising point to caution in assessing the future of cruise tourism, especially in a city where this kind of business is just beginning.

<p class="Abstract"><em>Gijón, also known as Xixón, is an important city that rivals Oviedo, the historical capital of the Autonomous Region and Principality of Asturias (Spain), in historical demographic and economic terms. It has traditionally been a port and, more recently, an industrial city, which experienced very rapid population growth and with little planning. After the industrial crisis of the 80s, the city wanted to become a tourist location more than an industrial harbor. Both its privileged location and the historical urban heritage that still remain are corner stones to make this change possible. However, the late and strict legislation (improvised to protect the last remains of a previously uncontrolled development) impeded a necessary urban re-design in order to shelter the new touristic supplies. This paper proposes some urban solutions to selectively modify the catalogue according with the cultural and touristic potentials of the city. These solutions were agreed by the working group set up by Gijón City Council and ERDU (Estudio de Renovación y Desarrollos Urbanos -Urban Renovation and Development Studio).</em></p><em><em><br /></em></em>

Culture; the essence of Pakistan’s independence of 1947; has been impacted by various ideologies and civil powers like Mughals, Sikhs, Hindus, and most influential Britishers who ruled the land long before the country got its independence. Karachi, the port city of Pakistan has particularly attracted many powers for economic benefits, dominantly Britishers who later took over the land. Britishers brought the Bungalow-compound complex as a permanent residence typology due to their long stay in the city. The importation and transformation of this new housing typology have framed the architectural identity of Pakistan and have defined the lifestyle of its citizens, which is a cultural synthesis between the East and the West. Though the Bungalow design in Karachi has evolved with time as per the native’s culture and needs having different plot sizes, shapes/forms, open/built ratio, space arrangements, and materials that have changed its overall aesthetic point of view but the core remain the same. This research aims to analyse the British reign in pre-independence India through their socio-cultural, economic, and political influence on bungalow design and its transformation over time in the context of Karachi, Pakistan, i.e., Western influence combined with modernity. It is the necessity of the modern city development to implement the informatization management of water supply pipe network. The paper introduces the design of a data acquisition and monitoring system for water supply pipe network based on GPRS. It presents the implement of the hardware and software design of the data acquisition and monitoring terminal which is based on the embedded technology and uC/OS-II operating system, as well as the software design of the monitor center. The communication protocol based on GPRS and Winsock network programming technology is provided. The various field data collected by the terminal are encapsulated and sent to the GPRS module by microprocessor serial port. Then, the GPRS module sends the data to the remote monitor center which realizes the functions such as data process, data storage and statistical analysis. The system works well in the laboratory environment.

Port Harcourt municipality as a developing city has over the years been inundated with rapid urbanisation and continuous city expansion. This development has led to an increasing demand for more land to cope with such pace of transformation. Land as a natural resource is finite, yet the demand for more land is unlimited. Based on this increasing demand for land for infrastructural, commercial, residential, institutional and industrial services, government, individuals and communities alike have resort to the reclamation and conversion of available wetlands within the Port Harcourt municipality. This study sets out to identify the boom, the blunder and the brunt of wetlands reclamation and conversion within Port Harcourt Municipality; with specific objectives to ascertain the nature of spatial expansion within the wetland areas in Port Harcourt municipality; identify the extent to which urban growth has affected land use in the wetland areas within Port Harcourt municipality; and to establish the boom, blunder and the brunt of wetland depletion and conversion for urban land uses within the Port Harcourt municipality. The study adopts a quasi-experimental research design, it involves the gathering of retrospective data from various sources without the manipulation of the data sources. Sampling technique was multi-stage; listing of all forty-one wetland settlements; three settlements were purposively selected for ease of access and growing insecurity. Satellite images of the study sites were obtained from Google earth, delineated and gridlines were superimposed on the images. A time series analysis using ERDAS imagine 2014 version, was used to show spatial changes between the years 1986 to 2000, and 2000 to 2016, a time period spanning thirty years. The study indicates that from 1986 to 2000, Port Harcourt municipality lost a total of 1,255,500 m2, this translates to a 5% loss. This loss occurs at an average rate of 89,678.57m2 per annum. From 2000 to 2016, the rate of loss was 108,956.25m2 per annum, and approximately 7.69% of wetlands totalling 1,743,300m2 was lost to urbanisation. Improved urban services, economic prosperity, increased revenue represents some of the boom. Unnecessary incursion into the wetlands by groups, depletion of habitat for flora and fauna species, development of unplanned settlements is some of the blunders and declining urban quality of life, massive urban flooding, pressure on existing urban services, depletion of the already lean state resources are the brunt. Some recommendations include; conduct periodic geospatial mapping of wetlands to enable the listing of identified wetlands and identify existing species of flora and fauna for conservation, tourism development and preservation; there should be a strengthened development control framework to guide and encourage professionally trained and equipped manpower to manage wetlands and ensure acceptable best practices.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to show impacts of household wastes handling on some physicochemical parameters of surface water, soil, sediments and borehole water samples in Port Harcourt. Waste generated from the households are indiscriminately dumped on roads, stream channels, bush lands and open spaces thus defacing the landscape of the city, flooding and spreading vector-borne diseases. As a result there is unsustainable and wasteful utilisation of resources which gives rise to pollution of the environment. The research determines the pollution profile of some dumpsites, surface water bodies that act as recipients of household waste from result of analysis of physicochemical parameters. Design/methodology/approach Major dumpsites in the city were selected for sampling. Three sampling stations at upstream, discharge point and downstream were selected for water and sediments. Water samples were collected in one-litre plastic containers, and then labelled and transported to laboratory for analysis. Sediment samples were collected at a depth of 5-10 m under water and preservation, handling and analysis were based on standard principles and procedures. Soil samples were dug with auger at both top (0-15 cm) and bottom (15-30 cm) in radial coordinates. The soil and sediment samples were first digested using the wet oxidation method before analysis with atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Findings The physicochemical analysis of surface water samples showed that conductivity, salinity, turbidity, sulphate, phosphate, magnesium, total hardness and lead exceeded the World Health Organization and Nigerian Industrial Standard limits for drinking water qualities at the sampled areas. The same parameters in addition to pH and manganese also exceeded the limits for sediment samples. The soil pH showed acidity at the sampling stations for both top and bottom depths. Conductivity, sulphate, iron, manganese, phosphate and lead also exceeded the FMEnv Guidelines and standards for soil quality. The continuous discharge of household wastes on water and soil resulted in elevated levels of some measured parameters. Research limitations/implications The research was limited by funds. The cost of sampling and analysis was enormous and limited the study to parameters that available funds could carry. This factor also stretched the period of study. The non-availability of sponsorship made it difficult to extend the research to soil particle size distribution and the underground water movement of the study areas. Another limitation was logistics as the study covered vast areas of the metropolis demanding steady means of mobility that was not available. Epileptic supply of power delayed the timely delivery of result of analysis. Practical implications The results of the analysed physicochemical parameters of water, sediments, soil and borehole water samples indicated spatial variations in their values at the study area, with higher values at the discharge points and downstream than the upstream, while for the borehole water analysis, the effect was more pronounced at stations with appreciable quantity of degradable household wastes. The levels of some physicochemical variables exceeded standard limits as a result of continuous discharge of household wastes .The implication is that household waste handling influenced the physicochemical variables negatively and constant monitoring serves as a useful tool of abatement. Originality/value This work is original and has not been published before in any book or journal article locally or internationally. The research related waste handling lifestyles with concentrations of measurable parameters, which is an additional work to what other authors have done. The value is that data generated will be a reference material to other researchers, city planners, government agencies and institutions that are involved with environmental management. Furthermore it has added a new dimension to the discipline of waste management in terms of scope and contribution to knowledge.

BackgroundOn 12 January 2010 Port-au-Prince, Haiti was struck by a 7.0 Mw earthquake that devastated the city and destroyed much of the Haiti University and Educational Hospital. In the following weeks, a tent hospital was erected at the site and hundreds of patients were seen daily by expatriate healthcare volunteers. The high volumes of patients, disorganized hospital grounds, and high levels of stress among patients led to issues of crowd control.DiscussionTo improve security a new triage system was designed and implemented based on current emergency medicine models. This design addressed patient flow, triage, environmental conditions, and differentiation of emergency services. The results of this system were a streamlined triage system as well as improved safety.ConclusionsDuring the chaos following the Haiti earthquake, a triage design was implemented at the HUEH that lead to improved Emergency Department patient flow and hospital safety.

The China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is the flagship project of the Belt and Road Initiative. At the end of the CPEC, the Gwadar port on the Arabian Sea is being built quickly, providing an important economical route for the flow of Central Asia’s natural resources to the world. Gwadar city is in a rapid urbanization process and will be developed as a modern, world-class port city in the near future. Therefore, monitoring the urbanization process of Gwadar at both high spatial and temporal resolution is vital for its urban planning, city ecosystem management, and the sustainable development of CPEC. The impervious surface percentage (ISP) is an essential quantitative indicator for the assessment of urban development. Through the integration of remote sensing images and ISP estimation models, ISP can be routinely and periodically estimated. However, due to clouds’ influence and spatial–temporal resolution trade-offs in sensor design, it is difficult to estimate the ISP with both high spatial resolution and dense temporal frequency from only one satellite sensor. In recent years, China has launched a series of Earth resource satellites, such as the HJ (Huangjing, which means environment in Chinese)-1A/B constellation, showing great application potential for rapid Earth surface mapping. This study employs the Random Forest (RF) method for a long-term and fine-scale ISP estimation and analysis of the city of Gwadar, based on the density in temporal and multi-source Chinese satellite images. In the method, high spatial resolution ISP reference data partially covering Gwadar city was first extracted from the 1–2 meter (m) GF (GaoFen, which means high spatial resolution in Chinese)-1/2 fused images. An RF retrieval model was then built based on the training samples extracted from ISP reference data and multi-temporal 30-m HJ-1A/B satellite images. Lastly, the model was used to generate the 30-m time series ISP from 2009 to 2017 for the whole city area based on the HJ-1A/B images. Results showed that the mean absolute error of the estimated ISP was 6.1–8.1% and that the root mean square error (RMSE) of the estimation results was 12.82–15.03%, indicating the consistently high performance of the model. This study highlights the feasibility and potential of using multi-source Chinese satellite images and an RF model to generate long-term ISP estimations for monitoring the urbanization process of the key node city in the CPEC.

The result of mobile VCT service In BatuAmpar Health Quarantine at 2017 Showed from 2639 test of the high risk group (crewman, port warker, drivers ) 9 crewman infection HIV. The Purpose of This Studywas to determine the effect of giving peer education to change knowledge and attidues of crewman about prevention of HIV/AIDS in BatuAmpar International Cargo Port. This study was conducted on January 15, 2019. This study used a quasi-experimental method with the design of one group pretest-posttest design. The sample for this study used a purposive sampling method with a total sample of 20 respondents. The intervention that was carried out was the crew man which as the peer educator provided education about HIV/AIDS 3 times a week for 2 weeks in other crew man. Data were analyzed by paired T-tests (t-tests) which were previously tested for the Shapiro Wilk Normality Test. The results showed that there was an effect of peer education on changes in knowledge and attitudes in crew man in the prevention of HIV/AIDS in BatuAmpar port which was significant with a p-value of 0,000 (p <0.05). This study leads to the conclusion that there is an effect of peer education on changes in knowledge and attitudes in crew man in the prevention of HIV/AIDS. It is expected that the implementation of the peer education HIV/AIDS intervention will be increased at BatuAmpar port so that the crew man will know information about HIV/AIDS
