AbstractCarbon-14 has been identified as one of the more significant radionuclides in solid radioactive wastes in a repository, due to the potential radiological impact arising if 14C were to be released and enter the biosphere. However, the assessment of radiation doses is complicated by the major role of carbon in biological processes, and this has tended to lead to the adoption of a cautious assessment approach.An international comparison of five models used to predict uptake of 14C to agricultural crops has been undertaken, within the BIOPROTA framework. Processes investigated include conversion of 14C-labelled CH4 into CO2 in soils, carbon accumulation in and release from soil carbon pools, gaseous emanation to, and dispersion from, the plant canopy atmosphere and, incorporation into plants by photosynthesis.For a unit rate of entry of 14C to soil, modelled activity concentrations in cereal crops differ by three to five orders of magnitude. This reflects, in part, differing assumptions for mixing and dispersion of air above the soil surface and within the crop canopy layer. For a unit activity concentration of 14C in air, the modelled uptake to cereal crops converges significantly. Following an assumed irrigation of crops with groundwater containing unit activity of 14C, the predicted uptake to crops varied by two to four orders of magnitude, again largely dominated by assumptions regarding the canopy atmosphere. In all cases, there is some convergence in model predictions as field size increases.A continuing programme of field research is being undertaken in parallel with the assessment work.

Ultramafic rocks, such as the Semail Ophiolite in the Sultanate of Oman, are considered to be a potential storage site for CO2. This type of rock is rich in divalent cations that can react with dissolved CO2 and form carbonate minerals, which remain stable over geological periods of time. Dissolution of the ophiolite mobilizes heavy metals, which can threaten the safety of surface and groundwater supplies but secondary phases, such as iron oxides, clays and carbonate minerals, can take up significant quantities of trace elements both in their structure and adsorbed on their surfaces.Hyperalkaline spring waters issuing from the Semail Ophiolites can have pH as high as 12. This water absorbs CO2 from air, forming carbonate mineral precipitates either as thin crusts on the surface of placid water pools or bottom precipitates in turbulent waters. We investigated the composition of the spring water and the precipitates to determine the extent of trace element uptake. We collected water and travertine samples from two alkaline springs of the Semail Ophiolite. Twenty seven elements were detected in the spring waters. The bulk of the precipitate was CaCO3 in aragonite, as needles, and rhombohedral calcite crystals. Traces of dypingite (Mg5(CO3)4(OH)2·5H2O) and antigorite ((Mg,Fe)3Si2O5(OH)4) were also detected. The bulk precipitate contained rare earth elements and toxic metals, such as As, Ba, Cd, Sr and Pb, which indicated scavenging by the carbonate minerals. Boron and mercury were detected in the spring water but not in the carbonate phases. The results provide confidence that many of the toxic metals released by ophiolite dissolution in an engineered CO2 injection project would be taken up by secondary phases, minimizing risk to water quality.

AbstractThe spatial and temporal changes in hydrology and pore water elemental and 87/86Sr compositions were used to determine contemporary weathering rates in a 65 to 226 ky old soil chronosequence formed from granitic sediments deposited on marine terraces along coastal California. Cl-corrected Na, K and Si increased with depth denoting inputs from the weathering of plagioclase and K-feldspar. Solute 87/86Sr exhibited progressive mixing of sea water-dominated precipitation with inputs from less radiogenic plagioclase. Linear approximations to these weathering gradients were used to determine plagioclase weathering rates of between 0.38 and 8.9x10-15 moles m-2 s-1. The lack of corresponding weathering gradients for Ca and Sr indicated short-term equilibrium with the clay ion exchange pool which requires periodic resetting by natural perturbations to maintain continuity, in spite of soil composition changes reflecting the effects of long-term weathering.

This article suggests a reading of the legend of the Golden Horde silver coins with a “stirrup-shaped” tamga, the inscription “minted in Crimea,” the motto “padishah of Islam,” and the lakab of the ruler: nuṣratun/al-dunya w-/al-dīn, or “the assistance to peace and faith.” The attempts to decipher the inscription showing abbreviations and inserted into the legend are restricted to the readings its ending, where A. K. Markov viewed “of the year six hundred and ninety,” and N. I. Veselovskii “of the year of eight hundred.” According to these readings, the first attributed the coins in question to the mintage of Iisu Nogai, giving him the khan’s title, and the second to the last years of Khan Toktamysh. N. P. Likhachev has run to the conclusion also shared by R. R. Fasmer that all the readings are doubtful. At present, the author of this article has attributed the silver coins with the “stirrup-shaped” tamga to the “Muslim” mintage of the master of the Crimean ulus Tuka Timur, a son of Jochi, that started in Crimea when Berke and the military elite of the Gorden Horde turned to Islam. The key to the reading of the mysterious legend is the silver dirhams minted in Konya by Izz ad-Din Keikavus II, a son of Giyas ad-Din Keikhusrov II, 658 AH (18.12.1259‒5.12.1260 AD), which until recently were attributed to Keikavus I and dated to 608 AH by S. Lane-Poole, A. K. Markov, A. Tewhid, and G. Hennequin. The legend on the Konya dirhams of Keikhusrov II written in the style similar to the legend on the “Muslim” coins of Tuka Timur reads: “Minted in the city of Konya in the year eight and five (=fifty) and six hundred.” There is an online publication with the correct definition of such a dirham originating from the oriental coins collection in the David Museum (Denmark), which publishers have attributed the spelling of the numerical “five” to the abbreviations dīvanī for the decade hamsin, which occur in the inscriptions of the mints of Saljūqiyān-i Rūm from 646 AH (26.04.1248‒15.04.1249) to the end of the Konya Sultanate (1307 AD). However, in this case the symbol seems to not correspond to the dīvanī abbreviation of “five” (o), though it resembles its indication tens as ones. The legend of the silver coins with “stirrup” tamga clearly show the dīvanī abbreviation “one” (o|) located on the imprint of the first coin stamp at hours 4‒5, and on all the later stamps at hour 12. The legend on the first coin stamp reads “This dinar was minted in Āḳrā in the year one (abbreviated as dīvanī) and six(ty), then ‒ six hundred,” and on the others as “You are minted in Āḳrā in the year one (dīvanī) and six(ty), then ‒ six hundred.” The initial date of the coin issue (661 AH) is not unexpected. It coincides with the date when Tuka Timur, Berke, and the military elite of the Golden Horde accepted Islam as the second religion of state (with the Tengri religion of the Mongols). which happened in the mid-661 AH. Especially important is the name of the mint Āḳrā, which appears together with the inscription on the same coin side as “minted in Crimea.” The same mint and the same mention of the Crimea (Qīrīm Āḳrā) appear on the “pre-Muslim” yarmaks of Tuka Timur, which preceded the coins with the “stirrup” tamga. Be that as it may, this article does not consider the question of the name and location of the Tukatimurids’ mint and the first “capital” of the Crimean ulus.

Resumo Objetivo Demonstrar a viabilidade da utilização combinada da autocoleta de swab nasofaríngeo e pool testing para detecção do SARS-CoV-2 em inquéritos epidemiológicos. Métodos A experiência envolveu amostra de 154 estudantes da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, que realizaram a autocoleta do swab nasofaríngeo em cabines individuais e sem supervisão. O teste molecular foi realizado utilizando-se a técnica de pool testing. Resultados A obtenção de amostras durou cerca de 5 minutos por pessoa. Realizou-se análise para detecção de RNA endógeno em 40 amostras e os resultados indicaram que não houve falhas decorrentes da autocoleta. Nenhum dos pools detectou presença de RNA viral. O custo da realização do teste molecular (RT-PCR) por pool testing com amostras obtidas por autocoleta foi cerca de dez vezes menor do que nos métodos habituais. Conclusão As estratégias investigadas mostraram-se economicamente viáveis e válidas para a pesquisa de SARS-CoV-2 em inquéritos epidemiológicos.

Resumo Enquanto a literatura sobre cuidado costuma ignorar suas possíveis imbricações com a violência e as atividades realizadas fora dos domicílios, estudos sobre prisões tendem a subestimar a sua relevância como cuidado no cotidiano destas instituições. Neste mote, analisamos o conteúdo de notícias sobre o sistema prisional mineiro publicadas online pelo jornal “O Tempo” durante o período de 2005 a 2019 para entender os significados, protagonistas, relações e trocas que são próprios ao cuidado no sistema prisional. A partir do conceito “circuitos de cuidado”, buscamos demonstrar que, no contexto de privação de liberdade, cuidar e ser cuidado se realiza somente quando há “merecimento” dos dois polos desta relação.

Bitcoin est une crypto-monnaie pionnière qui enregistre les transactions dans un registre public et distribué appelé blockchain. Il est utilisé comme support pour les paiements, les investissements et plus largement la gestion d’un portefeuille numérique qui n’est pas administré par un gouvernement ou une institution financière. Au cours de ces dix dernières années, l’activité transactionnelle de Bitcoin a rapidement et largement augmenté. La volumétrie ainsi que la nature évolutive de ces données posent des défis pour l’analyse et l'exploration des usages ainsi que des activités sur la blockchain. Le domaine de l’analyse visuelle travaille sur la conception de systèmes analytiques qui permettent aux humains d'interagir et d'obtenir des informations à partir de données complexes. Dans cette thèse, j'apporte plusieurs contributions à l'analyse des activités de minage sur la blockchain Bitcoin. Tout d'abord, je propose une caractérisation des travaux passés et des défis de recherche liés à l’analyse visuelle pour les blockchains. À partir de cette étude, j'ai proposé un outil d’analyse visuelle pour comprendre les activités de minage qui sont essentielles pour maintenir l'intégrité et la sécurité des données sur la blockchain Bitcoin. Je propose une méthode pour extraire l’activité des mineurs à partir des données de transaction et tracer leur comportement de bascule d’un pool de minage à un autre. L'analyse empirique de ces données a notamment révélé que les nouveaux pools de minage offraient une meilleure incitation et attiraient davantage de mineurs. Cette analyse a également montré que les mineurs choisissaient stratégiquement leur pool de minage dans le but de maximiser leur profit. Pour explorer l'évolution et la dynamique de cette activité sur le long terme, j'ai développé un outil d’analyse visuelle, appelé MiningVis, qui intègre des données liées au comportement des mineurs avec des informations contextuelles issues des statistiques et de l’actualité de Bitcoin. L'étude avec des utilisateurs démontre que les participants au minage de Bitcoin cherchent à utiliser l'outil pour analyser l'activité globale plutôt que pour étudier les détails d’un pool de minage. Les commentaires des participants prouvent que l'outil les a aidés à mettre en relation plusieurs informations et à découvrir les tendances dans l’activité de minage de Bitcoin
Bitcoin is a pioneer cryptocurrency that records transactions in a public distributed ledger called the blockchain. It has been used as a medium for payments, investments, and digital wallets that are not controlled by any government or financial institution. Over the past ten years, transaction activities in Bitcoin have increased rapidly. The volume and evolving nature of its data pose analysis challenges to explore diverse groups of users and different activities on the network. The field of Visual Analytics (VA) has been working on the development of analytical systems that allow humans to interact and gain insights from complex data. In this thesis, I make several contributions to the analysis of Bitcoin mining activity. First, I provide a characterization of the past work and research challenges related to VA for blockchains. From this assessment, I proposed a VA tool to understand mining activities that ensure data integrity and security on the Bitcoin blockchain. I propose a method to extract miners from the transaction data and trace pool hopping behavior. The empirical analysis of this data revealed that emerging mining pools provided a better incentive to attract miners. Simultaneously, miners strategically chose mining pools to maximize their profit. To explore the evolution and dynamics of this activity over the long term, I developed a VA tool called MiningVis that integrates mining behavior data with contextual information from Bitcoin statistics and news. The user study demonstrates that Bitcoin miner participants use the tool to analyze higher-level mining activity rather than mining pool details. The evaluation of the tool proves that it helped participants to relate multiple information and discover historical trends of Bitcoin mining

Cette thèse propose trois essais contribuant à déterminer les opportunités et les défis des technologies blockchain et des crypto-monnaies, afin de comprendre leur possibilité d’adoption dans le système bancaire et l’économie en général. Tout d’abord, nous avons montré, à travers une revue de littérature, des expérimentations pratiques, et une analyse comparative des différentes plateformes de DLT existantes, que les DLT alternative de consortium sont les prototypes qui devraient prédominer dans le système bancaire à l’avenir. Ensuite, nous avons mis en évidence la résistance et la résilience des principaux systèmes de récompenses utilisés par les pools de minage face aux événements du halving de Bitcoin. Cette comparaison est complétée par des calculs supplémentaires qui enrichissent véritablement l’analyse des décisions et des comportements des mineurs rejoignant un pool. Enfin, nous avons développé une solution de tokenisation adaptée pour le Liban, visant à assurer une reprise économique, tout en abordant le contexte économique tumultueux du pays et en étudiant les défis des solutions numériques existantes
This thesis presents three essays that contribute to determining the opportunities and challenges of blockchain technologies and cryptocurrencies, in order to understand their potential for adoption in the banking system and the economy in general. Firstly, we have demonstrated, through a literature review, practical experiments, and a comparative analysis of different existing DLT platforms, that consortium alternative DLTs are the prototypes likely to predominate in the banking system in the future. Next, we highlighted the resilience and robustness of the main reward systems used by mining pools in the face of Bitcoin halving events. This comparison is complemented by additional calculations that truly enrich the analysis of the decisions and behaviors of miners joining a pool. Finally, we developed a tokenization solution tailored for Lebanon, aimed at ensuring economic recovery, while addressing the country’s tumultuous economic context and examining the challenges of existing digital solutions

Resumo: O presente trabalho tem por objetivo propor um modelo de aplicação de políticas públicas para o tratamento dos resíduos têxteis em polos de indústrias de confecção, à luz da Política Nacional de Resíduos Sólidos - Lei nº 12.3015/2010. Pouco se sabe sobre a geração e descarte dos resíduos sólidos das indústrias confeccionistas. Praticamente não se encontram dados precisos, pesquisas e ou dados estatísticos oficiais consistentes. O que se vê, na maioria dos aglomerados industriais do setor é uma enorme quantidade de resíduos têxteis sendo levados, pelos caminhões de coleta de resíduos urbanos, para os aterros municipais todos os dias, sem nenhum tipo de tratamento. As questões ambientais estão em evidência e são objetos de estudo e discussão nos diversos segmentos da sociedade incluindo empresas, governos e instituições de ensino que atuam nas mais variadas áreas de pesquisa. Faz-se necessário ultrapassar os limites dos discursos socioambientais, viabilizando a prática através de atitudes que levem à transformação e beneficiem a sociedade e o meio ambiente. A metodologia utilizada para o desenvolvimento do trabalho foi a pesquisa-ação, por ser um método mais flexível conseguiu abarcar as necessidades que se impôs no decorrer da pesquisa. Abstract: The present work aims to propose an application model of public policies for the treatment of textile waste from apparel industry, according to The Solid Waste National Policy - Law nº 12.305/2010. Little is known about the generation and disposal of solid waste from apparel industries, virtually accurate data and researches and/or official statistical consistent data are not available. In usual, most of the clusters takes a huge quantity of textile waste, which is taken by urban garbage trucks, to the municipal landfills everyday, without any type of treatment. The environmental issues are in evidence and they are being object of study and discussion in several segments of society including enterprises, governments and educational institutions which perform in most of the research field. It is necessary to exceed the limits of the socioenvironmental speeches, supporting the experience through attitudes which take to the transformation and benefit the society and the environment. The methodology used for the development of the work was action-research, a more flexible method that got the needs required during this study. Optimized memory management is important for a demanding application to achieve high-performance results. But un-optimized or unwanted memory behaviors can usually be difficult to detect without an overview of how memory is structured during run-time. This thesis explores real-time visualization of dynamic memory allocation for applications using the memory pool allocation technique. In the thesis, technical and graphical challenges are described together with their solutions and the design choices that were made. The final result is a program that can visualize dynamic memory management in real time, with the focus on displaying a detailed and comprehensive memory overview that preserves the level of detail over time.
Optimerad minneshantering är viktig för att uppnå hög prestanda i en krävande applikation. Men att upptäcka icke optimerade eller oönskade minnesbeteenden kan vara svårt utan en visuell översikt över hur minnet är strukturerat under programmets exekvering. Denna avhandling undersöker hur dynamisk minnesallokering kan visualiseras i realtid för applikationer som använder allokeringstekniken minnes\-pool. I avhandlingen beskrivs tekniska och grafiska utmaningar tillsammans med deras lösningar och de designval som gjordes. Nowadays, individuals and organizations experience an increase in cyber-attacks. Combating such cybercrimes has become the greatest struggle for individual persons and organizations. Furthermore, the battle has heightened as cybercriminals have gone a step ahead, employing the complicated cyber-attack technique. These techniques are minute and unobtrusive in nature and habitually disguised as authentic requests and commands. The cyber-secure professionals and digital forensic investigators enforce by collecting large and complex pools of data to reveal the potential digital evidence (PDE) to combat these attacks and helps investigators to arrive at particular conclusions and/or decisions. In cyber forensics, the challenging issue is hard for the investigators to make conclusions as the big data often comes from multiple sources and in different file formats. The objective is to explore the possible applications of machine learning (ML) in cyber forensics and to discuss the various research issues, the solutions of which will serve out to provide better predictions for cyber forensics.

In order to verify whether there is a considerable increase in body skin temperature during different swimming techniques (crawl and backstroke) and identifying the most affected regions. The athlete's thermal symmetry was also analyzed, as well as its modification after the swimming, according to the performed technique. The accuracy of thermography as a method to identify and distinguish these different styles was also evaluated. Ten male swimmers were recruited and two different swimming techniques were assessed, crawl and backstroke. After a 10 minute acclimatization period in the pool, the swimmers were quickly dried with microfiber towels. The thermograms were taken before and after the swimming task, which consisted in a 7x200m protocol in crawl or backstroke. Infrared thermography revealed an increase of temperature after exercise and no significant differences were found between both techniques. Thermal symmetry was not affected by exercise.

Abstract The magnocellular neurosecretory system of the rat hypothalamus has long been considered to be an excellent model for the study of mammalian peptidergic neurons. The magnocellular neurons are confined to relatively homogenous nuclei within the hypothalamus- the supra-optic nucleus (SON) and the paraventricular nucleus (PVN)- and the neuronal cell bodies are separated anatomically from the nerve terminals that are present at the site of neurosecretion in the neural lobe of the pituitary (Sofroniew 1983). The outputs of these neurons are the hormones oxytocin and vasopressin, the concentrations of which are readily measurable in the systemic circulation; hence the state of activation of these neuronal pools can be readily assessed in vivo as well as in vitro. As with all neurons, the secretory activity of magnocellular neurons is governed from minute to minute largely by synaptic events at the cell bodies. However, it is now clear that trans-synaptic activation of neurons also elicits longer-term responses that are correlated with, and may be dependent upon, the induction of new patterns of gene expression. Peptide gene expression in neurons can be modulated by many factors, including membrane electrical activity, neurotrophic growth factors, steroids, and neurotransmitters (e.g. Lightman and Young 1987). One of the most important regulators of peptide gene expression appears to be the proto-oncogene c-fos (Morgan and Curran 1989). c-fos messenger RNA (mRNA) and its proteins are expressed in neurons in vitro following intense depolarization induced by high potassium concentrations (Morgan and Curran 1986) and also following applications of nerve growth factor (Curran and Morgan 1985; Greenberg et al. 1985), nicotine (Greenberg et al. 1986), barium (Curran and Morgan 1986), and BayK8644 (Morgan and Curran 1986). The c-fos gene is activated rapidly and transiently, and such so-called immediate early genes have been proposed to encode regulatory proteins that control the expression of late onset genes, including peptide genes (Sonnenberg et al. 1989). In particular, c-fos protein forms a heterodimeric transcription factor complex with c-jun protein, which is the product of a second immediate early gene, and this heterodimer binds with high affinity and specificity to the AP-1 binding site for transcription factor activity on DNA (Rauscher et al. 1988).

Resumen
This study considers the toxicity and flammability of emitted fuel vapor from un-ignited pools of spilled chemicals on land. It also estimates the thermal radiation levels emitted from such pools in case they catch fire. A software based on EPA dispersion models was utilized to estimate the size and location of the dangerous clouds. The 3D dangerous clouds were presented in downwind, crosswind, and vertical directions from the source of the spill. The growth and decay of the formed dangerous zones with time were also investigated. Among other input data required by the above-mentioned software, the transient evaporation rate from the spilled fuel pool and its area were determined by considering the equations of conservation of mass and energy. The study also considered the situation when the spill is followed by ignition causing a pool fire. In such a case, the main concern for impact assessment was the US EPA-specified limiting radiation levels to which humans or facilities can be exposed. Exposure to 5.1 kW/m2 for more than 30 seconds can cause 2nd degree burns while exposure to the wood charring radiation level of 12.6 kW/m2 for more than one minute can cause fatality for humans. To facilitate this analysis a fire model developed by the US Gas Research Institute was used to find out safe distances from which fire fighting personnel can work towards extinguishing the fire. The application of such techniqus to a case study of an instantaneous accidental spill from a typical mobile gasoline tanker supplying fuel to local petrol stations showed that the toxic and flammable zones may extend to downwind distances of 561m and 399m, respectively. For ignited pools, on the other hand, the dangerous zones corresponding to radiation levels of 5.1 and 12.6 kW/m2 were 199 and 120 meters, respectively. For the case study of gasoline spill from a typical storage tank in a refinery resulted in the possible formation of toxic clouds extending to about 40,000 m and 48 m in the downwind and vertical directions, respectively. The flammability zone, however, was restricted to the pool area only. For most cases considered, parametric studies were performed to investigate the effects of wind speed, atmospheric stability, and vertical height on the size of dangerous zones. An interface between the dynamic results of the dispersion software and the static data of the Doha Geographical Information System (GIS) allowed the immediate identification of the major landmarks affected by the considered accidents. This data would be of a great help in developing an emergency evacuation plan for such accidents.

Abstract Fire suppression systems for transuranic (TRU) waste facilities are designed to minimize radioactive material release to the public and to facility employees in the event of a fire. Currently, facilities with Department of Transportation (DOT) 7A drums filled with TRU waste follow guidelines that assume a fraction of the drums experience lid ejection in case of a fire. This lid loss is assumed to result in significant TRU waste material from the drum experiencing an unconfined burn during the fire, and fire suppression systems are thus designed to respond and mitigate potential radioactive material release. However, recent preliminary tests where the standard lid filters of 7A drums were replaced with a UT-9424S filter suggest that the drums could retain their lid if equipped with this filter. The retention of the drum lid could thus result in a very different airborne release fraction (ARF) of a 7A drum’s contents when exposed to a pool fire than what is assumed in current safety basis documents. This potentially different ARF is currently unknown because, while studies have been performed in the past to quantify ARF for 7A drums in a fire, no comprehensive measurements have been performed for drums equipped with a UT-9424S filter. If the ARF is lower than what is currently assumed, it could change the way TRU waste facilities operate. Sandia National Laboratories has thus developed a set of tests and techniques to help determine an ARF value for 7A drums filled with TRU waste and equipped with a UT-9424S filter when exposed to the hypothetical accident conditions (HAC) of a 30-minute hydrocarbon pool fire. In this multi-phase test series, SNL has accomplished the following: (1) performed a thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) on various combustible materials typically found in 7A drums in order to identify a conservative load for 7A drums in a pool fire; (2) performed a 30-minute pool fire test to (a) determine if lid ejection is possible under extreme conditions despite the UT-9424S filter, and (b) to measure key parameters in order to replicate the fire environment using a radiant heat setup; and (3) designed a radiant heat setup to demonstrate capability of reproducing the fire environment with a system that would facilitate measurements of ARF. This manuscript thus discusses the techniques, approach, and unique capabilities SNL has developed to help determine an ARF value for DOT 7A drums exposed to a 30-minute fully engulfing pool fire while equipped with a UT-9424S filter on the drum lid.

The Isis-3D computational fluid dynamics/radiation heat transfer computer code was developed to simulate heat transfer from large fires to engulfed packages for transportation risk studies. These studies require accurate estimates of the total heat transfer to an object and the general characteris tics of the object temperature distribution for a variety of fire environments. Since risk studies require multiple simulations, analysis tools must be rapid as well as accurate. In order to meet these needs Isis-3d employs reaction rate and radiation heat transfer models that allow it to accurately model large-fire heat transfer even when relatively coarse computational grids are employed. In the current work, parameters for the reaction rate model were selected based on comparison with soot volume fraction and temperature measurements acquired in a recent 6 m square pool fire under light wind conditions. The soot volume fraction Isis-3D uses to define the edge of the optically thick fire was determined using temperature measurements of a pipe engulfed 20-m-diameter pool fire with a steady 9.5 m/s crosswind. Accelerated simulations, in which the specific heat of the engulfed pipe was reduced by a factor of twelve below the measured values, reproduce the temperature data in the 11-minute crosswind fire using only 3.5 hours on a standard desktop workstation.

Abstract A series of large-scale experiments were recently performed to measure heat transfer to a massive cylindrical calorimeter engulfed in a 30-minute circular-pool fire [1]. The calorimeter inner surface temperature was measured at several locations and an inverse conduction technique was used to determine the net heat flux. The flame emissive heat flux was measured at several locations around the calorimeter. Light winds of around 2 m/s blew across the calorimeter axis at the beginning of the test but diminished and stopped as the test continued. The winds tilted the fire so that the windward side of the calorimeter was only intermittently engulfed. As a result, the measured flame emissive power near the windward side was substantially less than the leeward surface. The variation of calorimeter temperature and heat flux was closely correlated with the measured flame emissive power.
