Resumen
Abstract Thermoplastic elastomers based on blends of polyolefins are an important family of engineering materials. Their importance arises from a combination of rubbery properties along with their thermoplastic nature in contrast to thermoset elastomers. The development of polyolefin thermoplastic elastomer blends follows somewhat that of thermoplastic elastomers based on block copolymers such as styrene-butadiene-styrene triblock copolymer and multisegmented polyurethane thermoplastic elastomers which were instrumental in showing the utility of thermoplastic processing methods. Polyoleflns are based on coordination catalysts that do not easily lend themselves to block or multisegmented copolymer synthesis. However, since polyolefins have many important attributes favorable to useful elastomeric systems, there was considerable incentive to produce thermoplastic elastomers based on simple α-olefins by some means. Low density, chemical stability, weather resistance, and ability to accept compounding ingredients without compromising physical properties are highly desirable. These considerations led to the development of polyolefin thermoplastic elastomer blends, and two types are now widely used: blends of ethylene-propylene rubber (EPM) with polypropylene (PP) and blends of EPDM and PP in which the rubber phase is highly crosslinked. This article reviews the nature of these blends. Both physical and Theological properties are very dependent on the morphology and crosslink density of the blend system. Moreover, the usefulness of practical systems depends extensively on compounding technology based on added plasticizers and fillers.

Resumen
The paper gives an overview of literary material of a number of authors on the problem of the preparation of modified polyolefins during the crosslinking process. It is shown that materials based on polyolefins, characterized by increased heat-resistance favoring improvement of complex of technical requirements for light resistance, reliability, manufacturability in respect to the production and use of cable-conduction products. In particular, experimental data are presented on the use of organosilicon tin carboxylate in order to obtain products with the best quality characteristics. The results of theoretical and experimental investigations of the influence of formulation of polyolefin compositions on the kinetics of the crosslinking process and also on rheological and thermophysical properties are presented. The principal possibility of studying the influence of the irradiation dose on the regulation of the process of changing the structure of composites is considered.As shown by a number of authors, this method makes it possible to purposefully approach the development of crosslinked composite materials with predetermined properties. The method of radiation-chemical cross-linking compares the structure of the polymer base in the presence and without different types of fillers in highly filled composites. The data on the effect of radiation cross-linking conditions on the mesh density and the mechanical properties of cross-linked polyethylene at high temperatures are presented. The data on the chemical stability of cross-linked polyethylene to the action of various chemical reagents such as acetone, benzene, toluene, carbon tetrachloride, diethyl ether, benzene-76 and lubricants are given. One of the important circumstances in the study of the structure and properties of polymer composites is the possibility of mathematical modeling of viscoelastic compliance of thick-cross-linked polymers in correlation with the methodology of its theoretical parametric identification with subsequent prediction of the results of the thermomechanical experiment.Forcitation:Mammadli U.M. Resumen
Understanding the properties and flow characteristics of recycled polyolefins in rice hull composite blends is of importance to facilitate process optimization whilst promoting sustainability. The influence of milled rice hull particle size (<0.5 mm and <1 mm) on properties of recycled polyolefins composites was studied with major focus on recycled high-density polyethylene (rHDPE) and polypropylene (rPP) together with added maleated polymer coupling agents. Composites were compounded/extruded using a twin-screw extruder and the thermal, mechanical, and physical properties were analyzed as well as their melt flow, dynamic. and capillary rheology tests. The incorporation of the <0.5 mm rice-hulls particles enhanced the composite properties of viscosity, flexural strength, moduli, water absorption, and thermal stability for both polyolefins with rHDPE composites showing more reliable properties as compared to rPP.

Resumen
Piezoelectric polymers characterized by flexibility are sought for applications in microelectronics, medicine, telecommunications, and everyday devices. The objective of this work was to obtain piezoelectric polymeric composites with a cellular structure and to evaluate their usefulness in practice. Composites based on polyolefins (isotactic-polypropylene and polyethylene) with the addition of aluminosilicate fillers were manufactured by extrusion, and then polarized in a constant electric field at 100 V/µm. The content of mineral fillers up to 10 wt% in the polymer matrix enhances its electric stability and mechanical strength. The value of the piezoelectric coefficient d33 attained ~150 pC/N in the range of lower stresses and ~80 pC/N in the range of higher stresses, i.e., at ~120 kPa. The materials exhibited high durability in time, therefore, they can be used as transducers of mechanical energy of the human motion into electric energy. It was demonstrated that one shoe insert generates an energy of 1.1 mJ after a person walks for 300 s. The miniaturized integrated circuits based on polyolefin composites may be applied for the power supply of portable electronics. Due to their high sensitivity, they can be recommended for measuring the blood pulse.

L'objectif de cette recherche est le développement de matériaux à haute valeur ajoutée, avec une grande quantité de charges bio-dérivées, aboutissant à un produit plus écologique. La stratégie poursuivie est basée à la fois sur l'introduction de fibres naturelles et sur l'utilisation de mélanges de polymères à base d'huile et bio-dérivés comme matrices, réduisant la quantité non biodégradable dans le matériau. Le projet de thèse est basé sur le développement de mélanges HDPE / PLA remplis de charges naturelles, telles que la farine de bois et les fibres de papier recyclées. Le polyéthylène haute densité a été choisi car il est l'un des polymères recyclés les plus représentatifs du marché. L'acide poly (lactique) a été sélectionné car il s'agit d'un polymère biodégradable important sur le marché. La méthodologie développée ici peut être étendue à d'autres polymères biodégradables, tels que l'isolat de protéine de soja (SPI). La farine de bois est un déchet diffus qui peut être utilisé pour la production de composites bois-plastique. Les fibres de papier recyclées sont issues de déchets de papier industriels, qui ne peuvent pas être soumis aux procédés de recyclage traditionnels. Des additifs ont été introduits pour faire face au problème d'hydrophilie différente entre les polymères à base d'huile / bio-dérivés avec des charges naturelles. La composition et les processus de production optimaux sont des défis, non seulement pour l'utilisation de ces matériaux, mais aussi pour leur élimination. La fin de vie de ces échantillons peut être évaluée par une biodégradabilité et une compostabilité contrôlées, en corrélant la structure du matériau avec la capacité de se biodégrader. La production d'un matériau à impact environnemental réduit avec des propriétés cohérentes avec leurs applications est un premier avantage environnemental. L'obtention d'une biodégradabilité contrôlée, en fonction des applications, valoriserait nos matériaux. Plusieurs caractérisations ont été réalisées afin d'analyser l'effet de différents compatibilisants et traitements tels que: tests de traction, microscopie électronique à balayage, calorimétrie différentielle à balayage, analyses thermogravimétriques, spectroscopie infrarouge, chromatographie d'exclusion de taille et tests de compostage
The objective of this research is the development of high-added value materials, with high amount of bio-derived fillers, resulting in a more eco-friendly product. The pursued strategy is based on both the introduction of natural fibres and the use of oil-based and bio-derived polymer blends as matrices, reducing the non-biodegradable amount in the material. The thesis project is based on the development of HDPE/PLA blends filled with natural fillers, such as wood flour and recycled paper fibres. High-density polyethylene has been chosen because it is one of the most representative recycled polymers on the market. Poly(lactic) acid has been selected as it is an important bio-degradable polymer on the market. The methodology developed here can be extended to other bio-degradable polymers, such as Soy Protein Isolate (SPI). Wood flour is a diffuse waste material, that can be used for production of Wood Plastic Composites. Recycled paper fibres are derived from industrial paper waste, which cannot be subjected to traditional recycling processes. Additives have been introduced in order to face the problem of different hydrophilicity between oil-based/bio-derived polymers with natural fillers. The optimal composition and production processes are challenges, not only for the use of these materials, but also for their disposal. The end-of-life of these samples can be evaluated through controlled bio-degradability and compostability, correlating material structure with the ability to biodegrade. The production of a material at reduced environmental impact with properties consistent with their applications is a first environmental advantage. Obtaining a controlled biodegradability, as a function of the applications, would give enhanced value to our materials. Several characterizations have been performed in order to analyse the effect of different compatibilizers and treatments such as: tensile tests, scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analyses, infrared spectroscopy, size exclusion chromatography and composting tests

Resumen
During the past decades, the key role of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) in different pathologies has been indicated to take part to many physiological and pathological processes including aging, cancer, neurodegenerative and cardiovascular diseases. The role of ROS is not delimited inside living organisms, but affects also synthetic polymers limiting their commercial use. Indeed, common polymers like polyolefins are subjected to deterioration by oxygen-promoted oxidative processes both during processing and end-use conditions. In biological systems the detrimental action of free radicals is continuously balanced by the action of specific enzymes and dietary antioxidants able in transforming ROS in non-oxidant species. The oxidative degradation of polymers is generally prevented or retarded by adding low concentration (0.05-0.5 wt%) of antioxidants, such as hindered phenols or amines and organo-phosphorous compounds. However, when pro-oxidant species overwhelm antioxidant defenses, oxidative stress and oxidative degradation take place in biological systems and polymers, respectively. The research of new antioxidants with an improved efficacy respect to the already used is then very important and was the central topic of this PhD thesis. In Chapter 1 the oxidation phenomena and the most important antioxidants, both natural and synthetic ones, are briefly introduced. In Chapter 2 is reported our work concerning the preparation and evaluation of the antioxidant activity of 7-hydroxy dihydrobenzo[b]thiopenes and 7-hydroxy benzo[b]thiophenes developed by both the structure of Vitamin E and that of sulfur containing antioxidants previously synthesized by our research group. Part of this work was published in the journal Organic Letters (Organic Lett. 2016, 18, 5464-5467). In Chapter 3 is described the use of polymeric antioxidants, obtained from the copolymerization of a polymerizable antioxidant with appropriate monomers, as better stabilizing additives (respect to low molecular weight molecular antioxidants) for polyolefins. This work was also published on the Polymer Degradation and Stability journal (Polym. Degrad. Stab. 2017, 144, 167-175). In the same chapter it is also reported the synthesis of new antioxidant derivatives suitable for the preparation of polymeric antioxidants through copolymerization reactions or reactive blending. The stabilization of polyolefins is also the subject of Chapter 4, where are reported the outcomes of my work in the research group of professor S. Al-Malaika at the Aston University, Birmingham (UK), that was focused on the direct linking of a phenolic antioxidant on polyethylene trough grafting reactions. Finally, in Chapter 5 is described the modification of commercially available molecular antioxidants (Trolox, Catechin and BHT) for the preparation of metallic nanostructured antioxidants (Au, γ-Fe2O3, Co) in order to reduce their toxicity in biomedical applications, for the treatment of stress related pathologies and as additives for ether solvents stabilization.

Resumen
Cosmic ray (CR) shielding is the main issue for future long missions far for the protection of the Earth’s magnetic field. Many experiments have been performed in Space to evaluate the effect of the Space environment on the material stability (mainly MISSE experiments from NASA). However those experiments were not able to evaluate CR shielding performances of materials, and results are mainly present in the form of erosion yield due to atomic oxygen erosion. In this study, a conceptual design is shown for further experiments on the International Space Station by focusing on the effect of cosmic rays on material aging. Shields will be made by using polyolefin sheets coupled or not with metallic foils. Polymeric sheets will be filled or coated with magnetic nano-particles to provide a small magnetic activity.
