Resumen
Parting with a villain? Yuan Shikai in light of new research Yuan Shikai, the military strongman of late Qing Empire, talented administrator and reformer, crucial figure during the 1911 (Xinhai) Republican Revolution, president with dictatorial power and, finally, a self-proclaimed emperor, is the most controversial figure of 20th-century China. After his death during the civil war that his actions provoked, historiography (communist and non-communist) portrayed Yuan as traitor and chief villain. In following years Yuan was almost unanimously denounced by Soviet (S.L. Tikhvinsky, O. Nepomnin) and Western (L. Sharman, E. Hummel) historiography. His first biography, written by Jerome Ch’en in 1960, fully upheld this portrait. Significant studies (1968 and 1977) of Ernest P. Young, based on important primary sources, went unnoticed at the time. It was also the case with Stephen McKinnon’s volume on Yuan as brilliant Qing official in Tianjin and Beijing between 1901 and 1908. During the two last decades of the 20th century some smaller studies changed this unfavorable portrait. In the eyes of Marie-Claire Bergère, Madleine Ch’i, Luke Kwong and Henerietta Harrison, Yuan appears as a far-sighted statesman and defender of Chinese raison d’état. The last biography written by Patrick Fuliang Shan portrays Yuan as an extremely power-hungry and astute politician and as a conservative reformer and modernizer, at the same time. His political failure was both his personal tragedy and a catastrophe of the Chinese nation.

Resumen
The article focuses on the investigation of a prominent representative of the ruling eliteof late Imperial Russia, a minister of finance and a chairman of the Ministerial Council V. N. Kokovtsov and his role in the foundation of the Russo-Japanese Society in St. Petersburg (the then Petrograd) in 1911–1917. When attempting to assess the minister’s personal and professional qualities, his role in history, and his policies, modern historiography often neglects this episode in the minister’s life. However, without due consideration of the aforementioned activities, performing which Kokovtsov managed to juggle secrets and publicity and which became his primary concern after retirement, the minister’s political biography seems incomplete. Kokovtsov’s interest in the matter can be traced back to Russo-Japanese rapprochement before World War I. Due to his administrative experience, his personal authority and credibility, Kokovtsov managed to recruit numerous members of the political, religious and cultural elites both in the capital and elsewhere. The organization promoted the development of trade and cultural cooperation between the two countries, hence the cooperation with the Japanese-Russian Society in Tokyo and with leading Japanese politicians and courtiers. V. N. Kokovtsov’s personal qualities and his diplomatic abilities were a valuable asset. The author of the article underlines the importance of investigating archival documents and periodicals of the early 20th century, which have never been investigated before, in order to shed light on the underinvestigated but undoubtedly important episode in Kokovtsov’s biography.

Resumen
In the article the image of P. A. Stolypin is analyzed on the material of The Red Wheel, Diary R-17, memoires and essays by A. I. Solzhenitsyn. The authors trace the course the writer took while working on the artistic presentation of the image of one of the most prominent Russian state figures of the 20th century; they show Solzhenitsyn’s artistry in endeavoring to reveal to the reader all the “prominence”, “expressiveness” of this great person, as well as the significance of Stolypin’s destiny for the future of Russia. The authors of the research observe how in The Red Wheel Stolypin’s destiny is linked to that of Russia, following Solzhenitsyn in comprehending Stolypin as a “doer” responsible to Russia. In the course of the research Stolypin’s chapter with reviews in August 1914, has been analyzed in detail. This enabled the authors to grasp Stolypin’s image as the focal one in The Red Wheel, on the one hand, and, on the other hand, as Solzhenitsyn’s favourite character, conveyed realistically, and, at the same time, personally, compassionately, through “the dialectic of the soul”. The reader perceives a straightforward, strong-willed, dynamic, determined and ethically wholesome politician. The storylines of Guchkov, Bogrov, Nikolas II are essential to understanding Stolypin’s image. Focusing on these characters, the authors of the article show Stolypin’s role in their destinies. In The Red Wheel the artistic image of Stolypin is created by complex forms of inner monologues, quotes, free indirect discourse, the alternation of scenes and reports (summaries of events), by the abundance of the author’s “insertions”, by the multiple functions of irony. In the process of research the texts of P. A. Stolypin’s speeches were drawn upon, his children’s reminiscences, his biography, historians’ opinions. The chosen historical context provided a valuable insight into Solzhenitsyn’s historical method and the writer’s historiosophic reasoning.

Resumen
On several occasions in the early twentieth century, advocates of urban planning proposed significant measures for altering the layout of Toronto streets. Planning historians often have proposed that an interest in beautification was superseded by a focus on efficiency by the 1920s, but Toronto's plans largely were lost amidst private development processes and business cycles. Confusion over planning priorities, the short-term perspectives of politicians, and a lack of urgency also impeded city and regional planning. Toronto experienced less planning initiatives than major United-States cities.

Resumen
The contribution gives a brief historical insight in the beginning and the drastic change of biographical thinking particularly in the educational sphere. Biography is a theme addressed by German educational sciences ever since its historical beginnings in the late 18th century. The discovery of the autonomous, educated, middle-class subject is rooted in that interest in biography, which also shaped the process of “biographisation” of the lower social strata a century later. Even post-modern and post-structural criticism of the ‘subject’ towards the end of the 20th century has a lasting influence on educational science. Understanding the historical background and the consequences of this threefold change of ideas in the concept of “biography” in the German tradition is the aim of this article.

A concept of a collective house that would include apartments and a wide array of communal facilities was a topic of intensive debate in Czechoslovakia throughout the 20th century. This topic was popular not only among architects, but most importantly among feminists, social activists, sociologists, politicians or businessmen. Debaters projected onto these houses their ideas of a future political and social system of Czechoslovakia. For some, shared living was a way to facilitate the arrival of communism, for others it represented a means to develop liberal capitalism. This article presents the political framework behind the idea of collective housing in Czechoslovakia.

Resumen
The purpose of article is to describe the role of ethics and morality in foreign policy and diplomacy. The article is theoretical. The introduction defines the concept of morality and presents the main research questions and hypotheses. The first part of this text presents general moral criteria for determining what human actions are right and what are wrong. Also presented are the types of motivations that most often affect politicians when making certain decisions in diplomatic activity. The second part of the article presents three profiles of famous politicians who in the 20th century acted in accordance with the voice of conscience and moral principles in their foreign policy. They are Mahatma Gandhi, India’s social leader in 1920–1948, Willy Brandt, Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1969–1974, and Jimmy Carter, U.S. President in 1977–1981. Using theoretical analysis, the generalisation of scientific facts and research findings, the author, on the basis of the reflection method, has described and analysed the motives that guided the three politicians in making difficult political decisions in specific historical situations. Understanding such motives is important because the measures adopted on the basis of them have had consequences not only for politicians but also for citizens and, sometimes, even for the entire world. As a result of the analysis, in the case of Gandhi, the following hypothesis has been confirmed: The voice of conscience to which politicians heed and its meaning are mostly associated with the historical and cultural context, unique for each country. In the case of Brandt and Carter, the author has verified the hypothesis that very often conscience and career motivation propose the same way of acting, which is why we cannot exclude career motivation in such a situation. Keywords: morality, conscience, policy, diplomacy, foreign policy, sociology of morality.

The paper is devoted to the strokes of the biography of the Serbian Army Colonel A. Srb, which is incorporated into the key events of the political history of Serbia and Russia at the beginning of the 20th century, and he himself was not just a participant in them, but also had some influence on them. A participant in the 1903 Coup and all the vicissitudes of the Serbian politics at the beginning of the 20th century, an active member of the organization "Unification or Death", who arrived in 1916 with Fr. Corfu to Russia to recruit the Serbian Volunteer Corps, became a witness and participant in the difficult events of 1917. The study of his biography, replete with white spots, allows a deeper understanding of the context of the seething political life that took place both in Serbia and Russia.

Reid, George. "Popes, politicians and political theory: The principle of subsidiarity in 20th century European history". Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/27018.

Texto completo
Resumen
The transformation of the principle of subsidiarity from a philosophical principle in Catholic social teachings to a constitutional article in the 1992 Treaty on European Union has been a source of confusion for scholars of European integration. Political scientists have examined subsidiarity from the perspective of political philosophy to account for its transformation and to determine its impact on European integration. However, no attempt has been made to anchor the emergence of subsidiarity in a historical context. This thesis employs a historical approach to analyze the transformation of subsidiarity. It examines the political struggles surrounding the principle in the Catholic Church, in German Christian Democracy, and in the debates over European Union in the European Community. It concludes that the transformation of subsidiarity occurred during the debates over the European Union that began in the 1970s and culminated in the ratification of the 1992 Maastricht treaty on European Union.

Day, Lara Elisabeth. "Paul Schultze-Naumburg : an intellectual biography". Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/17964.

Resumen
The subject of this dissertation is the work of the German writer, architect and Volkspädagoge Paul Schultze-Naumburg (1869-1949). His published work - 37 books, over 230 articles and countless lectures – ranging from art and architectural pedagogy, practice and criticism to cultural and racial theory, made him one of the most widely read German authors of the first half of the 20th century. Renowned during his lifetime, his racial and eugenic writing prompted his relegation in post-war German historiography, which ignored his impact and central position in the cultural and architectural landscape of German modernism. This dissertation examines Schultze-Naumburg as a specific cultural catalyst of radical nationalist and racist art and architectural history and theory, and traces his trajectory through Wilhelmine, Weimar and National Socialist Germany. Beyond the fine arts, Schultze-Naumburg helped formulate the conceptions of the anti-Semitic, pro Heimat and anti-urban, völkisch mind frame that would be transformed into the blood and soil rhetoric of the emerging National Socialist ideology. Schultze-Naumburg’s historical stature and socio-cultural prominence was recognized throughout his life, and history’s subsequent repression of his figure is based entirely on his ideas nefarious and fanatical potency and not on his erstwhile importance. Moving broadly chronologically, the first four chapters of the dissertation examine Schultze- Naumburg’s Wilhelmine work. After the introduction and literature review, Chapter II begins with an overview of his education and examines his landscape painting. Chapter III examines a sample of his prescriptive preservation writing composed for the Deutsche Bund Heimatschutz. The fourth examines his involvement in the Lebensreform movement and the Deutsche Werkbund, establishing his role in the Kunstgewerbe movement. Chapter V concentrates on the application of the Lebensreform ideal and Hermann Muthesius’ writing on Schultze-Naumburg’s design of the Cecilienhof (1913-1917) for the imperial Crown Prince. The sixth chapter traces the development of Schultze-Naumburg’s corporeal racial rhetoric from his Wilhelmine writing on women’s clothing reform to such radical polemics as Kunst und Rasse (1928), and its cumulation in National Socialist legislative policy, the Gesetz zur Verhütung des Erbkranken Nachwuchses (1933). Chapter VII considers the city of Weimar as the site of Schultze-Naumburg’s Volkspädagogik positing 1930 as turning point for both his career and the city itself.

Resumen
Political biography as political intervention is explored in this thesis: biography as action rather than as passive publication. This idea is investigated through contemporaneous political biography in twentieth century Australia — specifically, biographies written in the lead up to, or during, the active political careers of Australia's prime ministers from Barton to Howard. Australia had 25 prime ministers in this first century of Federation, but only 17 contemporaneous biographies of them were written and published. Three-quarters of these were written in the post-war period, and half were written in the 20th century's final two decades. Most were written by journalists. Given that perceptions of politicians influence their electability, and that biography can influence perceptions, this is a highly prospective area for testing the idea of biography as action — in this case, as political intervention. Here the metaphor of biography as a silken cord composed of several strands — historical, philosophical, psychological and political — can be seen to operate with specific application. The silken cord of biography slips on easily because of its familiar form; it is capable of dragging a politician's reputation up or down and may even be designed to hang them. While the biographer makes the cord, someone else may be holding onto it or subsequently seize it for their own ends. Of the 17 contemporaneous biographies examined here, the majority were found to promote or burnish the subject's standing - the silken cord lifting the subject up. One biography unequivocally sought to diminish the subject's standing - the silken cord dragging them down. This thesis takes perceptions of biography from a simplistic 'authorised/unauthorised' binary to a more nuanced exposition of its character and dynamics.

Resumen
In the context of a renascent interest in the thought of Jean-Paul Sartre, this thesis proposes a close examination of one of his less studied texts, the study of Gustave Flaubert, L'Idiot de la famille (1971-72). The analysis focuses on theoretical developments that emerge from Sartre's biographical enquiry, pursuing an interdisciplinary approach combining a consideration of literary theory and literary history with the perspective of Sartre's philosophy of subjectivity. L'Idiot is situated amongst a wide variety of texts by Sartre, from Qu'est-ce que la littérature? (1948) to the Critique de la raison dialectique (1960), identifying theoretical innovations within Sartre's understanding of the subject (ch. 1), his social theory (ch. 2), his theory of the imaginary (ch. 3), of literary production (ch. 4) and of reading (ch. 5). Additionally, hitherto largely unexplored passages highlight Sartre's reflections on the situation of the late 1960s. Previous analyses of the philosophical innovations presented in L'Idiot have often focused on the strictly theoretical passages in the biography. The present thesis also concentrates on the 'imagined' scenes presented throughout the text. Read as an integral part of Sartre's method, it is suggested that the dramatization facilitated by the biographical format is an integral part of the theoretical enquiry. Despite the lack of explicit referencing provided by Sartre, the biography is explored in its open character, identifying a series of resonances and similarities with a diverse range of authors. The different chapters consider thinkers whose relationship with Sartre has received little or no attention (such as Pierre Bourdieu and Walter Benjamin), or whose work resonates with Sartre in ways that have so far gone unnoticed (Roland Barthes, Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Maurice Blanchot).

Resumen
During the era of discrimination and disparity in Southern Africa, racial inequality silenced many black writers. It was the white authors that dominated the literary environment presenting their biased views on social and political concerns; the black authors standpoints were seen as unimportant and they were deemed inferior to the white authors. Consequently, it was particularly difficult for black writers to voice their experiences of living in a society riddled with oppression, prejudice and unequal opportunities. The purpose of this study is to critically compare selected texts by African authors Doris Lessing and Bessie Head, which depict the political and social struggles within Southern African society during the era of unequal opportunities. Lessing and Head’s works present incidents of life experiences in Southern Africa from two contrasting viewpoints. The selected texts explored are: The Grass is Singing and “The Old Chief Mshlanga” by Doris Lessing, a white author, in contrast and comparison to the texts: A Question of Power and “The Collector of Treasures” by Bessie Head, a coloured author. The research for this thesis is conducted from an ethnic literary perspective with careful consideration to critical race theory and cultural studies. From this perspective, the focus of the study is on the struggles that affected both the victim and perpetrator during the apartheid era as well as on the idea that those in power determined what was deemed acceptable and unacceptable, behaviourally and ideologically. Specifically, the plight experienced by the female characters living in a patriarchal society, and the segregation and racial inequality faced by the characters of colour is explored by analysing these characters’ influences, pressures and societal manipulations and constraints in the texts. Thus, this study will provide a more in-depth understanding of Southern African society during the apartheid era and the strategic use of literature to spotlight the subjugation and disparity.

Resumen
The late nineteenth century was a time of great change for women's roles in music. Whereas in 1870, women played primarily harp or piano, by 1900 there were all-woman orchestras. During the late nineteenth century, women began to perform on instruments that were not standard for them, such as cornet, trombone, and saxophone. The achievements of early female saxophonists scarcely have been mentioned in accounts of saxophone history. This study gathers scattered and previously unpublished information about the careers and repertoire of American female saxophonists from 1870-1930 into one reference source. The introduction presents a brief background on women's place in music around 1900 and explains the study's organization. Chapter two presents material on saxophone history and provides an introduction to the Chautauqua, lyceum, and vaudeville circuits. Chapter three contains biographical entries for forty-four women saxophonists from 1870-1930. Then follows in Chapter four a discussion of the saxophonists' repertoire. Parlor, religious, and minstrel songs are examined, as are waltz, fox-trot, and ragtime pieces. Discussion of music of a more "classical" nature concludes this section. Two appendixes are included--the first, a complete alphabetical list of the names of early female saxophonists and the ensembles with which they played; the second, an alphabetical list of representative pieces played by the women. The results of this study indicate that a significant number of women became successful professional saxophonists between 1870-1930. Many were famous on a local level, and some toured extensively while performing on Chautauqua, lyceum, and vaudeville circuits. Some ended their performing careers after becoming wives and mothers, but some continued to perform with all-woman swing bands during the 1930s and 40s.The musical repertoire played by women saxophonists from 1870-1930 reflects the dichotomy of cultivated and vernacular music. Some acts chose to use popular music as a drawing card by performing ragtime, fox-trot, waltz, and other dance styles. Other acts presented music from the more cultivated classical tradition, such as opera transcriptions or original French works for saxophone (by composers such as Claude Debussy). Most women, however, performed a mixture of light classics, along with crowd-pleasing popular songs.

Resumen
The attractiveness of cities is the result of sustainable and integrated urban development, which comprises smart urban planning, sustainable public transport, quality and affordable housing, quality public services, clean air and water, green spaces, available job opportunities, and respect for and preservation of the past. Unfortunately, many people believe that the modern city is becoming less of a space that offers its residents a quality, safe, and comfortable life, and increasingly transforming into an environment that exerts various pressures on them, from economic, sociological, and ecological aspects. A simplified definition of a „sustainable city“ involves creating and developing a structure with a unique urban metabolism that is sociologically acceptable, economically justified, and technically sustainable. A sustainable city employs an intelligent and long-term approach to collaboration in addressing economic, social, and environmental challenges that arise when people live in dense, compact areas and share limited and insufficient resources. Today’s city of Skopje is the result of historical conditions, natural factors, and the skills of urban planners and politicians to conceive, design, build, and manage it. The main problems facing Skopje today, which we will discuss in this paper, are urban expansion, urban planning for investors rather than improving the quality of life, unsustainable and illegal construction that obstructs the equal realization of urban planning standards, and the physical development of the system, and administrative disorganization leading to the blocking or hindered execution of basic responsibilities.

Resumen
Conversions, particularly those deemed as apostasies, were scrutinized by the dominant majority religions and often characterized as “aberrant” phenomena posing threats to national unity. This discourse had also spread to politics and manifested itself in oppressive measures, particularly against proselytization by religious minorities, and fuelled mistrust of converts within religious communities. However, the rhetoric of national/ethnic loyalty was also exploited by the propaganda of liberal politicians who favoured conversions from Catholicism to Serbian Orthodoxy as a means of adopting an imagined Yugoslav national identity. Similarly, some Slovenian Catholics from the border region of Venezia Giulia (slo. Julijska Krajina), annexed by Italy in 1920, turned to Orthodoxy to protest against the Holy See’s perceived indifference to the fascist policy of forced assimilation, which culminated in the forced resignation of bishops who sympathized with the Slovenian and Croatian minorities. The main ideologue of Slovenian political Catholicism, Anton Mahnič, claimed in the late 19th century that “only a convinced Catholic can be a true Slovenian”, thus marginalizing followers of non-Catholic religions, liberals and non-religious alike. Conversely, the Lutherans of the German minority on Slovenian territory contended that “to be a German means to be a Lutheran” and actively recruited German Catholics to strengthen their ranks and consolidate themselves as a singular national and religious entity. Another facet of the perceived foreignness of faiths other than Roman Catholicism among Slovenians is reflected in reconversions to Catholicism. While Catholic critics viewed “apostates” who left Catholicism as unsatisfactory adherents who would not necessarily become exemplary members of their newly adopted religion, Orthodox priests claimed that many Slovenian converts were not truly dedicated to the cause, only reluctantly embracing Orthodox customs and remaining Catholics “at heart”. This entrenched view emphasizes the inhospitable environment surrounding the exercise of a religious choice. In addition, compounded by pragmatic conversions of Catholics to Serbian Orthodoxy and Islam, which often lacked sincere commitment or integration into the newfound faith.

Resumen
The lyrical works of Czech composers from the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century are very little known, and not just to Romanian musicians. Even when it comes to composers who have gained notoriety, such as Bedřich Smetana, Antonín Dvořák or Leoš Janáček, without consulting a dictionary, we cannot name more than one of their titles: Smetana’s Prodaná nevěsta, Dvořák’s Rusalka and Janáček’s Jenůfa, even though each of them wrote countless other works dedicated to the opera. When we think of composers like Zdeněk Fibich and Otakar Ostrčil, obscurity is almost total. Beyond the fact that this study attempts to make a contribution to the knowledge in this field, other objectives include analyzing the compositional language that two composers embraced in homonymous operas and observing the manner in which they related to the mythology of their people. One of the major characters of the Czech national mythology is called Šárka, a title that both Leoš Janáček and Zdeněk Fibich have attributed to one of their operas. In studying the action of the two stage works, this research also turns to the Czech writers of that period and the manner in which they reflected the fundamental Czech myths in their literary works. Details related to the time of appearance of the operas and, in the case of Zdeněk Fibich, brief but welcome information on his biography and creation are also presented. The original contribution of this study consists in analyzing the overtures of the two homonymous operas in terms of compositional techniques, elements of construction and musical expression and, last but not least, observing the similarities and differences of vision between the two creators.
