Texto completoPetrological and geochemical studies in basalt-hosted peridotite xenoliths from Kerguelen Islands (Indian Ocean) indicate that the oceanic lithosphere formed in two steps ; i) a high degree partial melting episode related to the superposition of the southeast indian ridge and the Kerguelen plume ; ii) the percolation of important volumes of alkaline magmas at the scale of the Archipelago. Locally, peridotite-magma reactions produce small volumes of carbonate-rich melts. The study of chalcophile and siderophile elements (PGE, Au, Cu, S, Se, Re) indicate the budget of those elements in peridotites varies with the type of metasomatism, producing either a depletion or an enrichment. The 87Sr/86Sr isotopic compositions in clinopyroxenes evidence two types of mantle benetah the Archipelago. The western part comprises the oldest xenoliths localities (~30 Ma) and bears the imprint of metasomatism requiring a depleted component. The Sr isotopic compositions in the eastern xenolith localities (<25 Ma) are attributed to the global imprint left by magmas from the Kerguelen plume. Some peridotites have 187Os/188Os isotopic compositions that are simiular to those of peridotites in continental cratonic areas, indicating the presence of old subcontinental lithospheric material under the Archipelago, probably incorporated during the Gondwana breakup. Alternatively, the Os isotopic compositions of some carbonated peridotites indicate the participation of a recycled component associated to the Kerguelen plume

Texto completoPolar regions are particularly affected by the ongoing climate changes which have profound consequences on the development of phytoplankton and on the functioning of the biological pump. Plankton community structure and species-specific properties can strongly influence the export of organic matter and biomineral. The objectives of this PhD are (1) to identify the factors controlling the development and the structure of diatom communities, (2) to assess the influence of species diversity on the composition of particulate matter, and (3) to understand diatom mortality and export modes in the deep ocean. This work is based on the study of two subpolar regions: (1) the Baffin Bay in the Arctic, and (2) the Kerguelen region in the Southern Ocean. In Baffin Bay, we highlight a diatom community succession in relation with sea ice melting and the strong west-to-east water masses gradient prevailing in the bay. In the Kerguelen region, we confirm that iron is a key parameter controlling diatom community structure since we identified two distinct communities located either above the Fe-fertilized plateau or in adjacent HNLC waters. In the HNLC area, diatoms were more heavily silicified, resulting in higher Si:C elemental ratios in diatoms as well as in the bulk particulate matter. We show that 93 % of the intermediate (125-500 m) and deep (>500 m) particle stocks were single diatom cells — fecal pellets and aggregates represented less than 2% of the collected particles — providing new evidences of the importance of small particles for export fluxes

Texto completoThe study of this alkaline plutonic complex was multidisciplinary, mixing field observations and measurements, AMS, petrography, mineralogy, geochemistry (major and traces), isotopic geochemistry Rb / Sr and Sm / Nd and geochronology U-Pb on zircons. The synthesis of the results shows the minor participation of several sources (metasomatised mantle and continental fragments) in addition to the predominant source which is the typical asthenospheric mantle of the Kerguelen plume. In a dynamic and open magmatic system, the contaminated magmas formed the oldest magmatic and calcic series of the complex. The second and younger magmatic series produced (in a closed environment) more and more agpaitic rocks during differentiation. The incremental emplacement of the intrusions occurred between 11.7 (in the south) and 7.9 Ma (in the north). Finally, the type of construction of this pluton makes it a unique known example of laccolith in oceanic within-plate settings

Texto completoThe major mechanisms of the poleward oceanic heat flux in the Southern Ocean (SO) are still in debate. The long standing belief stipulates that the poleward heat flux across the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) is mainly due to mesoscale transient eddies, and the cross-stream heat flux by time-mean flow is insignificant. The poleward heat flux due to the time-mean flow and to transient eddies is estimated across the the Southern ACC Front (SACCF) at the Fawn Trough (FT) Passage, Kerguelen Plateau, and the impact of each mechanism on the global heat balance in the SO is analysed. It is shown that the eddy heat flux in this southern part of the ACC is negligible, while that due to the mean flow is overwhelming by two orders of magnitude. Results suggest then a new mechanism of the cross-stream poleward heat flux by time-mean flow across the southern ACC front. This is due to the unusual anticlockwise turning of currents with decreasing depth, which is associated with significant bottom upwelling engendered by strong bottom currents flowing over the sloping topography of the trough. The circumpolar implications of these local observations are discussed in terms of the depth-integrated linear vorticity budget, which suggests that the six topographic features along the southern flank of the ACC equivalent to the Fawn Trough case would yield sufficient poleward heat flux to balance the oceanic heat loss in the subpolar region. As eddy activity on the southern flank of the ACC is too weak to transport sufficient heat poleward, the non-equivalent barotropic structure of the mean flow in several topographically constricted passages should accomplish the required task

Texto completoThe interplay among microorganisms profoundly impacts biogeochemical cycles in the ocean. However, the questions of how microbes associated with each other on the spatial and temporal scale, and whether the associations of diatom-prokaryote and of DOM-prokaryote affect the distributions of these three components are open. In chapter 1, we observed distinct compositions of diatom and prokaryotic communities among the major ocean zones. Significant relationships between compositional changes of diatoms and of prokaryotes were found. In chapter 2, we observed two consecutive phytoplankton blooms, each composed of distinct diatom assemblages. Using network analysis, we identified two groups of diatoms representative of the spring and summer bloom, respectively, that had opposite correlation patterns with prokaryotic taxa. In chapter 3, we found the distinct composition of DOM and that of total and active prokaryotes on and off the plateau. The DOM-prokaryote correlations were overall stronger on the plateau than that off the plateau. The key active prokaryotic groups that strongly correlated with DOM were qualitatively similar in both ecosystems and quantitatively higher on the plateau. Taken together, our results demonstrate the significant associations between diatoms and prokaryotes, and between prokaryotes and DOM. The compositions of prokaryotic communities are influenced by both diatoms and DOM

Texto completoSeismic soundings, ice shelf elevation measurements and barotropic tide modelling, has been applied to estimate the bathymetry beneath the Amery Ice Shelf more accurately. The barotropic models have been validated by comparison with in situ and altimetric elevation measurements and current meter data. The comparison of our solutions with global models reveals the important role of regional modelling in coastal areas and beneath the floating ice shelves. The hydrodynamic model outputs have then been analysed. Further analysis of our regional tidal simulation has allowed us to examine and understand the tidal dynamics in the study region. We have then computed the energy budget to assess the model consistency and distinguish high dissipation sub-regions. In addition, using ECMWF atmospheric forced modelling, we could study barotropic circulation in the Southern Indian Ocean, characterize its modes of variability and quantify the impact of various forcing terms brought into play. Finally, the joint analysis of current velocities from the two simulations, baroclinic geostrophic and Ekman currents, has allowed us to estimate lateral mixing over the Kerguelen Plateau. Predominantly due to tidal velocities, this mixing explained the horizontal extension limits of the annual phytoplanktonic bloom observed over the northern plateau. Models of high frequency dynamics have also been applied to study altimetric signals. Firstly, they have been used as indicators to define regions of internal tide generation. By analysing altimetric measurements in these regions, we have characterized the sea surface signature of those waves, and estimated the energy dissipated through this process. The regional barotropic solutions have then served to correct altimetric measurements from aliased high frequency processes. The impact of these corrections has been quantified in coastal regions and beneath the Amery Ice Shelf. The corrected altimetric measurements have allowed us to study the local oceanic dynamics around the Kerguelen Islands. Over the Amery Ice Shelf, it has allowed us to observe a thinning of the floating shelf over its central part during the ENVISAT period
