Abstract. Mean currents, horizontal diffusivity and upwelling on the Kerguelen Plateau and the deep basin east of the Kerguelen Islands were studied using 48 World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) Standard Surface Velocity Program (SVP) drifters deployed during the 2011 austral spring KEOPS II (KErguelen Ocean Plateau compared Study II) cruise. These drifter data were analyzed based on autocovariances for temporal scales, least-squares fitted streamfunctions for estimating mesoscale mean currents, wind stress fields and Ekman pumping, and Taylor's single particle diffusivity for estimating horizontal dispersion of surface waters. The results have revealed the shelfbreak current on the southern and eastern shelf slopes of the Kerguelen Islands, transport of surface waters from the Kerguelen–Heard shelf basin crossing the shelf slope into the deep basin off the plateau east of the Kerguelen Islands, and upwelling driven by wind stress curl in both the plateau and deep basin regions. The estimated volume transports off the Plateau in the upper 50 m based on surface drifters and below the mixed layer based on wind stress curl are 0.5 and 1.7 Sv, respectively, the mean and standard deviation of vertical velocities driven by wind stress curl averaged in the plateau and deep basin regions up to 3.2 ± 7.4 m d−1, and the upwelling fluxes in the surveyed plateau and deep basin regions are approximately 0.7 and 1.1 Sv, respectively. These physical transport processes can have significant effects on balances between biogeochemical elements and their recycling processes.

Abstract. Dissolved and particulate excess 230Th and 231Pa concentrations (noted 230Thxs and 231Paxs respectively) and 231Paxs/230Thxs activity ratios were investigated on and out of the Kerguelen plateau (Southern Ocean) in the framework of the Kerguelen Ocean and Plateau compared Study project in order to better understand the influence of particle flux and particle chemistry and advection on the scavenging of 231Pa. In the wake of Kerguelen, particulate 231Paxs is relatively abundant compared to its content in the dissolved phase. This, together with the low fractionation observed between 230Th and 231Pa (FTh/Pa ranging from 0.06 ± 0.01 to 1.6 ± 0.2) reflects the domination of the biogenic silica in the particle pool. Along the eastern escarpment of the Kerguelen plateau, the strong 231Paxs horizontal gradient in the deep waters highlights the intense removal of 231Pa at depth, as already observed for 230Thxs. This local boundary scavenging was attributed to re-suspension of opal-rich particles by nepheloid layers, resulting in fractionation factors FTh/Pa ≤ 1 along the Kerguelen plateau slope. Therefore, both the composition (biogenic opal) and the flux (intense along the margin) of particles control the scavenging of the two radionuclides in the Kerguelen wake. The modelling of 231Pa distribution with an advection-scavenging model demonstrates that lateral advection of open ocean water on the Kerguelen plateau could supply most of the 231Pa, which is then efficiently scavenged on the highly productive plateau, as previously proposed for 230Thxs. It stresses that lateral advection can play a significant role in the overall budget of particle reactive trace elements in a coastal-open ocean system.

In the wake of Kerguelen Island, the relative abundance of 231Paxs in the particles compared to the dissolved phase associated with a low fractionation factor between 230Th and 231Pa (FTh/Pa ranging from 0.06 ± 0.01 to 2.13 ± 0.63) is consistent with particles being dominated by biogenic silica in this area. Strong 231Pa concentration gradients occur on relatively short distances. Along the eastern escarpment of the Kerguelen plateau, an intensive scavenging affects significantly the dissolved distribution of 231Paxs at depth, as already observed for 230Thxs. This local boundary scavenging was attributed to re-suspension of opal-rich particles by nepheloid layers, resulting in fractionation factors FTh/Pa ≤ 1 along the Kerguelen plateau slope. Kerguelen Plateau is the largest underwater rise in the southern Indian Ocean. The heterogeneous structure of the crust, plume magmatic activity, as well as a different ages of adjacent basins — all this indicates a different structure of the marginal zones of the plateau. In this work, on the basis of geological and geophysical information, various morphodynamic types of the margins of the Kerguelen plateau are identified. An analysis of the bottom topography and data of potential fields together with two-dimensional density modeling allows us to specify the deep structure of the tectonosphere of the margins of the Kerguelen plateau and take a fresh look at their nature.

The volcanic Kerguelen Islands are formed on one of the world’s largest submarine plateaus. Located in the remote segment of the southern Indian Ocean close to Antarctica, the Kerguelen Plateau is notable for a complex tectonic origin and geologic formation related to the Cretaceous history of the continents. This is reflected in the varying age of the oceanic crust adjacent to the plateau and the highly heterogeneous bathymetry of the Kerguelen Plateau, with seafloor structure differing for the southern and northern segments. Remote sensing data derived from marine gravity and satellite radar altimetry surveys serve as an important source of information for mapping complex seafloor features. This study incorporates geospatial information from NOAA, EMAG2, WDMAM, ETOPO1, and EGM96 datasets to refine the extent and distribution of the extracted seafloor features. The cartographic joint analysis of topography, magnetic anomalies, tectonic and gravity grids is based on the integrated mapping performed using the Generic Mapping Tools (GMT) programming suite. Mapping of the submerged features (Broken Ridge, Crozet Islands, seafloor fabric, orientation, and frequency of magnetic anomalies) enables analysis of their correspondence with free-air gravity and magnetic anomalies, geodynamic setting, and seabed structure in the southwest Indian Ocean. The results show that integrating the datasets using advanced cartographic scripting language improves identification and visualization of the seabed objects. The results include 11 new maps of the region covering the Kerguelen Plateau and southwest Indian Ocean. This study contributes to increasing the knowledge of the seafloor structure in the French Southern and Antarctic Lands.

AbstractThe Kerguelen Plateau is a major topographic feature in the Southern Ocean. Located in the Indian sector and spanning nearly 2000 km in the meridional direction from the polar to the subantarctic region, it deflects the eastward-flowing Antarctic Circumpolar Current and influences the physical circulation and biogeochemistry of the Southern Ocean. The Kerguelen Plateau is known to govern the local dynamics, but its impact on the large-scale ocean circulation has not been explored. By comparing global ocean numerical simulations with and without the Kerguelen Plateau, this study identifies two major Kerguelen Plateau effects: 1) The plateau supports a local pressure field that pushes the Antarctic Circumpolar Current northward. This process reduces the warm-water transport from the Indian to the Atlantic Ocean. 2) The plateau-generated pressure field shields the Weddell Gyre from the influence of the warmer subantarctic and subtropical waters. The first effect influences the strength of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current and the Agulhas leakage, both of which are important elements in the global thermohaline circulation. The second effect results in a zonally asymmetric response of the subpolar gyres to Southern Hemisphere wind forcing.

Processes of cobalt (Co) entrainment from shelf sediments over the Kerguelen Plateau were studied during the KEOPS (Kerguelen Ocean Plateau compared Study) in order to explain the exceptionally high dissolved cobalt concentrations that have been measured in the surface waters above the Kerguelen Plateau, and in intermediate and deep waters above its eastern slope. Lateral advection and dissolution of Co contained in basalt sediments around Heard Island, a main source of lithogenic Co in the study area, were shown to imprint the process of surface enrichment over the plateau. Dissolved Co enrichment was strongest at the intercept of the eastern slope with intermediate and deep waters, probably due to more efficient mobilisation of the sediments in the slope current, in addition to advection of Co-enriched and low-oxygenated ocean water masses. In surface waters, the strong sedimentary Co inputs were estimated to be much higher than biological Co uptake in phytoplankton blooms, underlining the potential use of dissolved cobalt as tracer of the natural iron fertilization above the Kerguelen Plateau. Based on a simple steady-state balance equation of the external input of dissolved iron over the plateau, the fertilization of iron inferred by using dissolved Co as a tracer of basalt sources is estimated to be 28 × 102 ± 21 × 102 t yr−1 in surface waters of the Kerguelen Plateau. This estimate is consistent with preceding ones (Zhang et al., 2008; Chever et al., 2010), and the calculated iron supply matches with the phytoplankton demand (Sarthou et al., 2008).

Abstract. Dissolved Fe (dFe) concentrations were measured in the upper 1300 m of the water column in the vicinity of the Kerguelen Islands as part of the second KErguelen Ocean Plateau compared Study (KEOPS2). Concentrations ranged from 0.06 nmol L−1 in offshore, Southern Ocean waters to 3.82 nmol L−1 within Hillsborough Bay, on the north-eastern coast of the Kerguelen Islands. Direct island runoff, glacial melting and resuspended sediments were identified as important inputs of dFe that could potentially fertilise the northern part of the plateau. A significant deep dFe enrichment was observed over the plateau with dFe concentrations increasing up to 1.30 nmol L−1 close to the seafloor, probably due to sediment resuspension and pore water release. Biological uptake was shown to induce a significant decrease in dFe concentrations between two visits (28 days apart) at a station above the plateau. Our work also considered other processes and sources, such as lateral advection of enriched seawater, remineralisation processes, and the influence of the polar front (PF) as a vector for Fe transport. Overall, heterogeneous sources of Fe over and off the Kerguelen Plateau, in addition to strong variability in Fe supply by vertical or horizontal transport, may explain the high variability in dFe concentrations observed during this study.

La structure et l'evolution du plateau kerguelen sont determinees a partir de donnees geophysiques. Une carte bathymetrique est etablie. Les donnees en sismique reflexion verticale ont permis d'identifier 4 unites sismostratigraphiques. Les profils gravimetriques ont ete utilisees pour modeliser la structure profonde du plateau, les profils magnetiques ont permis de dater la separation broken ridge et du plateau kerguelen. Cet ensemble correspond a une structure volcanique formee en limite de plaques au cretace inferieur, elle est egalement marquee par des episodes de rifting et de subsidence conduisant a la separation

Le paleo-plateau de kerguelen dans l'ocean indien, s'est forme il y a 110 ma au niveau du centre d'expansion responsable de la separation entre l'inde et le bloc australie-antarctique. Il est caracterise par une intense fracturation de son socle et les evenements tectoniques responsables de la formation des systemes tectoniques ont ete enregistres dans deux grands bassins sedimentaires: le bassin de kerguelen-heard et le bassin de raggatt. La nouvelle grille gravimetrique deduite des mesures altimetriques des satellites ers-1, seasat, geosat/gm et geosat/erm declassees au sud de 30s, utilisee conjointement avec des donnees sismiques, bathymetriques et magnetiques, permet de caracteriser de nouvelles directions tectoniques sur le plateau de kerguelen et dans les bassins adjacents (bassins d'enderby, de labuan et australo-antarctique). Le plateau de kerguelen est caracterise par trois ensembles tectoniques dont la mise en place s'integre dans l'histoire geodynamique de l'ocean indien austral. Le premier ensemble tectonique, oriente nw-se, correspond a la marge orientale du plateau, au rift du gauss et au rift de l'umitaka maru. Ces differents systemes tectoniques se sont formes entre 88 et 45 ma et resultent du mouvement d'extension ayant separe l'australie de l'antarctique. Le deuxieme ensemble tectonique, oriente n-s, est caracterise par le grabens du 77e. Cette structure correspond a une ancienne zone de fracture resultant de l'expansion oceanique entre l'inde et le bloc australie-antarctique. Le troisieme ensemble tectonique est caracterise par le systeme tectonique e-w nouvellement identifie, situe a la base du graben du 77e. Il pourrait correspondre a la reactivation d'une structure preexistante qui serait un ancien centre d'expansion. Celui-ci serait lie a la separation entre l'inde et l'australie-antarctique et pourrait egalement etre a l'origine de la mise en place d'une partie du plateau de kerguelen (banc de banzare)

Le plateau de kerguelen (pk) et broken ridge (br) ont ete crees il y a 110 ma. A 45 ma leur separation marque la fin d'une phase d'extension/expansion tres lente entre l'australie et l'antarctique. Dans l'etude presente, la description de la tectonique est completee par l'interpretation d'une grille d'anomalies gravimetriques satellitaires. La configuration de la tectonique suggere qu'elle resulte d'un processus de tectonique global. Les plateaux ont ete fores en 10 sites, lors des legs odp-119 a 121. Ces nouvelles donnees, jointes a de precedentes etudes, ont permis de reconnaitre 3 evenements tectoniques qui ont marque la couverture sedimentaire du plateau a 88, 67 et 45 ma. Les courbes de subsidence, calculees en chaque site, sont toutes affectees par une phase tectonique. Sur br la subsidence pre- et post-tectonique est de type thermique oceanique parsons et sclater). Dans le sud du pk la subsidence pre-tectonique est quasiment nulle; la subsidence post-tectonique est de type post-amincissement (mc kenzie, adapte au milieu oceanique). Ces observations sont expliquees par une phase de rifting precedee d'une anomalie de temperature localisee sous le pk meridional. Ce rifting est modelise numeriquement: les marges du pk et br sont reproduites par une zone d'extension lithospherique asymetrique; le centre du pk est simule par deux zones d'extensions. En conclusion le pk et br sont marques par une phase de rifting de 40 ma, decomposee en plusieurs episodes, qui marque la propagation vers l'ouest de la tres lente extension/expansion entre l'australie et l'antarctique

La structure profonde des principales unités morpho-structurales du plateau sous-marin de Kerguelen (plateau de Kerguelen-Heard au nord et bassin de Raggatt au sud) et du bassin océanique d'enderby est présentée a partir de l'analyse des données de sismique grand-angle de la campagne md66/keobs. Les temps d'arrivée des ondes ont été modélisés avec la méthode d'inversion itérative au sens des moindres carres de Zelt & Smith (1992) ; les amplitudes ont été modélisées a l'aide de sismogrammes synthétiques calcules avec la méthode de la réflectivité (Fuchs & Muller, 1971). L’épaisseur importante de la croute du bassin d'enderby (10-13 km) suggère que sa mise en place a été affectée par la proximité du point chaud de Kerguelen au crétacé. Les coefficients de poisson dans la croute, estimes a partir de l'analyse des ondes p et des ondes converties p-s enregistrées sur les trois composantes des OBS (stations sismiques sous-marines), sont comparables a ceux mesures en laboratoire sur des échantillons ophiolitiques. La croute du domaine nord du plateau de Kerguelen a une épaisseur (21-23 km) et une loi de vitesse en fonction de la profondeur compatibles avec un modèle de plateau océanique (couche 3 très épaisse, vitesses élevées (>7,2 km/s) a la base de la croute). Sa mise en place résulterait de l'action du point chaud de Kerguelen sur ou a proximité de la dorsale séparant la plaque indienne de la plaque australo-antarctique entre 130 et 100 ma, selon une configuration comparable a celle de l'Islande actuelle. La structure du domaine sud du plateau de Kerguelen montre des différences significatives comparativement a celle du domaine nord. La croute, d'une épaisseur de 22-23 km, est constituée d'une croute supérieure avec des vitesses comparables à celle de la couche 2 océanique et une croute inferieure de 15-16 km d'épaisseur. La croute inferieure est caractérisée par une augmentation régulière de la vitesse entre des valeurs de 6,6 km/s à 9 km de profondeur et 6,9 km/s a 19 km de profondeur. Entre 19 et 25 km de profondeur, la croute est réflective comme le montrent plusieurs réflexions grand-angle enregistrées aux distances précritiques entre l'onde réfractée dans la croute inferieure non réflective et l'onde PMP, réfléchie sur le Moho. La croute inferieure réflective a plusieurs propriétés originales: 1 elle constitue, en moyenne, une zone a faible vitesse a la base de la croute (vitesse moyenne: 6,7 km/s) ; 2 la croute inferieure n'est réflective que dans une direction parallèle a l'axe du plateau ; elle est associée a une anisotropie (apparente ?) de vitesse dans la croute inferieure réflective avec un axe lent parallèle a l'axe du plateau ; 3 la réflectivité semble diminuer du sud-est vers le nord-est ; 4 une anisotropie de vitesse est observée dans le manteau supérieur avec un axe rapide dans la direction parallèle à l'axe du plateau. Les vitesses (6,6-6,9 km/s) dans la croute inferieure non réflective sont atypiques d'une croute océanique d'une vingtaine de kilomètres d'épaisseur, supposée riche en constituants ultramafiques. La structure du bassin de Raggatt est, par contre, comparable a celle d'une croute continentale faiblement étirée dans la direction nnw-sse et recouverte de coulées volcaniques. La réflectivité de la croute inferieure résulterait de cisaillements ductiles dans sa partie supérieure et d'intrusions magmatiques dans sa partie inferieure. L’origine du plateau de Kerguelen est intimement liée a l'histoire crétacée des continents adjacents. Les domaines nord et sud du plateau de Kerguelen représenteraient respectivement l'Islande et la marge Hatton Bank

Resumen
La grande extension méridienne et la faible profondeur du plateau de Kerguelen en font un obstacle majeur à l'écoulement zonal du Courant Circumpolaire Antarctique (CCA) dans le secteur indien de l'océan austral. Tandis que la majorité du transport du CCA est dévié au nord des îles Kerguelen, le reste (50 x 10 m3 s-1) doit passer plus au sud, probablement par les passages profonds du Fawn Trough (56°S, 77°E, 2650 m) et du Princess Elizabeth Trough (64°S, 82°E, 3650 m). Pourtant, le détail de la circulation autour du plateau est longtemps resté méconnu, en raison des difficultés à récolter des données dans cette région éloignée de toute route commerciale, d'un climat particulièrement rude et de la présence de la banquise recouvrant la moitié du plateau en hiver. L'objectif de cette thèse est d'améliorer notre connaissance de la circulation moyenne autour du plateau de Kerguelen. Pour cela, un large éventail d'outils allant de l'analyse d'observations récentes à l'utilisation de modèles numériques de circulation a été utilisé. Les données obtenues à l'aide d'éléphants de mer instrumentés sont présentées en détail. Une procédure de calibration et de validation de ces profils hydrologiques est proposée. Ce jeu de données, constitué d'un grand nombre de sections à haute résolution spatiale, est ensuite combiné avec d'autres observations plus conventionnelles (in situ et satellites) pour construire un nouveau schéma de circulation dans la région. L'existence d'un courant intense traversant le passage du Fawn Trough est alors mise en évidence. Les observations directes du courant du Fawn Trough pendant la campagne récente TRACK (resp.: Y.-H. Park) confirment l'importance de ce courant, qui concentre plus de 40 x 10 m3 s-1, soit 30 % du transport total du CCA. La connaissance de la circulation développée à partir des observations est ensuite utilisée pour valider une simulation au 1/4° de résolution. A l'aide de tests de sensibilité sur une configuration régionale de l'Océan Indien Sud, l'importance de la bonne représentation des caractéristiques des masses d'eau profonde et de la bathymétrie pour obtenir une simulation réaliste est mise en évidence. Finalement, une analyse dynamique de la simulation est menée, montrant comment la circulation résulte d'une combinaison des effets de la bathymétrie et du vent au travers de la balance de Sverdrup topographique. L'extension méridienne du CCA est maximale dans la région du plateau de Kerguelen, augmentant régionalement le forçage du vent. En permettant le passage de la partie sud du CCA près de la divergence antarctique (entre 60°S et 65°S), où le pompage d'Ekman est très intense, le plateau de Kerguelen pourrait favoriser indirectement l'accélération du CCA.

Les études pétrologiques et géochimiques dans les péridotites en enclaves dans les basaltes des Iles Kerguelen (Océan Indien) indique la formation de la lithosphère océanique en deux temps ; i) une fusion partielle de fort degré lié à la superposition de la ride sud-est indienne et du panache de Kerguelen ; ii) la percolation d'important volumes de magmas de type alcalin à l'échelle de l'archipel. Localement, les réactions magma-péridotites génèrent des petits volumes de liquide carbonaté. L'étude de la paragenèse sulfurée et des éléments calcophiles et sidérophiles (EGP, Au, Cu, S, Se, Re) indique que le budget de ces éléments dans les péridotites varie selon le type de métasomatisme, produisant soit un appauvrissement, soit un enrichissement. Les compositions isotopiques en 87Sr/86Sr dans les clinopyroxènes permettent de mettre en évidence deux types de manteaux, ainsi que leur évolution dans le temps. A l'ouest, dans les gisements anciens (~30 Ma) est reconnue l'empreinte d'épisodes métasomatiques nécéssitant la présence d'un composant appauvri. Les compositions isotopiques dans les gisements plus jeunes de l'est (<25 Ma) sont attribuées à l'empreinte globale laissée par le panache de Kerguelen. Certaines compositions en 187Os/188Os sont semblables à celles des péridotites en domaine continental, indiquant la présence de vieux matériel lithosphérique sous-continental sous l'archipel, probablement incorporé dans la jeune lithosphère océanique lors de la fracturation gondwanienne. En revanche, les compositions les plus radiogéniques en 187Os/188Os dans les péridotites carbonatées indiquent la participation d'un composant recyclé associé au panache de Kerguelen
Petrological and geochemical studies in basalt-hosted peridotite xenoliths from Kerguelen Islands (Indian Ocean) indicate that the oceanic lithosphere formed in two steps ; i) a high degree partial melting episode related to the superposition of the southeast indian ridge and the Kerguelen plume ; ii) the percolation of important volumes of alkaline magmas at the scale of the Archipelago. Locally, peridotite-magma reactions produce small volumes of carbonate-rich melts. The study of chalcophile and siderophile elements (PGE, Au, Cu, S, Se, Re) indicate the budget of those elements in peridotites varies with the type of metasomatism, producing either a depletion or an enrichment. The 87Sr/86Sr isotopic compositions in clinopyroxenes evidence two types of mantle benetah the Archipelago. The western part comprises the oldest xenoliths localities (~30 Ma) and bears the imprint of metasomatism requiring a depleted component. The Sr isotopic compositions in the eastern xenolith localities (<25 Ma) are attributed to the global imprint left by magmas from the Kerguelen plume. Some peridotites have 187Os/188Os isotopic compositions that are simiular to those of peridotites in continental cratonic areas, indicating the presence of old subcontinental lithospheric material under the Archipelago, probably incorporated during the Gondwana breakup. Alternatively, the Os isotopic compositions of some carbonated peridotites indicate the participation of a recycled component associated to the Kerguelen plume

Les régions polaires sont particulièrement touchées par les changements climatiques, ce qui a profondes conséquences sur le développement du phytoplancton et le fonctionnement de la pompe biologique. La structure des communautés planctoniques et les propriétés spécifiques aux espèces influencent l'export de la matière organique et biominérale. Cette thèse a pour but (1) de déterminer les facteurs contrôlant la structure et le développement des communautés de diatomées dans les régions polaires, (2) d'évaluer l'influence de la diversité des espèces sur la composition de la matière particulaire, et (3) de comprendre les modes de mortalité et d'export des diatomées dans l'océan profond. Ces travaux reposent sur l'étude de deux régions subpolaires situées aux antipodes : (1) la baie de Baffin en Arctique, et (2) la région des Kerguelen dans l'océan Austral. Dans la baie de Baffin, nous avons mis en évidence une succession des communautés de diatomées en lien avec la fonte de la banquise et le gradient des masses d'eau. Dans la région des Kerguelen, nous avons confirmé le rôle du fer avec l'identification de deux communautés distinctes situées de part et d'autre du plateau. Dans la zone HNLC, les diatomées sont davantage silicifiées, ce qui conduit à une augmentation des rapports BSi:POC des diatomées et de la matière particulaire. Nous avons montré que près de 93 % des particules >20 μm des couches intermédiaires (125-500 m) et profondes (>500 m) sont des cellules individuelles de diatomées—les pelotes fécales et les agrégats ne représentant que 2 % des particules—ce qui montre l'importance des petites particules dans les flux d'export
Polar regions are particularly affected by the ongoing climate changes which have profound consequences on the development of phytoplankton and on the functioning of the biological pump. Plankton community structure and species-specific properties can strongly influence the export of organic matter and biomineral. The objectives of this PhD are (1) to identify the factors controlling the development and the structure of diatom communities, (2) to assess the influence of species diversity on the composition of particulate matter, and (3) to understand diatom mortality and export modes in the deep ocean. This work is based on the study of two subpolar regions: (1) the Baffin Bay in the Arctic, and (2) the Kerguelen region in the Southern Ocean. In Baffin Bay, we highlight a diatom community succession in relation with sea ice melting and the strong west-to-east water masses gradient prevailing in the bay. In the Kerguelen region, we confirm that iron is a key parameter controlling diatom community structure since we identified two distinct communities located either above the Fe-fertilized plateau or in adjacent HNLC waters. In the HNLC area, diatoms were more heavily silicified, resulting in higher Si:C elemental ratios in diatoms as well as in the bulk particulate matter. We show that 93 % of the intermediate (125-500 m) and deep (>500 m) particle stocks were single diatom cells — fecal pellets and aggregates represented less than 2% of the collected particles — providing new evidences of the importance of small particles for export fluxes
