Resumen
Vibration analysis of axially moving functionally graded plates with internal line supports and temperature-dependent properties is investigated using harmonic differential quadrature method. The plate is subjected to static in-plane forces while out-of-plane loading is dynamic. Stability of an axially moving plate, traveling at a constant velocity between different supports and experiencing small transverse vibrations are considered. The series of internal rigid line supports parallel to the plate edges are considered together with various arbitrary combinations of boundary conditions. Material properties of the plate are assumed temperature-dependent which is a non-linear function of temperature and differ continuously through thickness according to a power-law distribution of the volume fractions of the plate constituents. Two types of micromechanical models, namely, the Voigt and Mori–Tanaka models are considered. Based on the classical plate theory, the governing equations are obtained for functionally graded plate using the Hamilton’s principle. In the frame of a general dynamic analysis, it is shown that the onset of instability takes place in the form of divergence. The plate may experience divergence or flutter instability at a super critical velocity. Results for dynamic analysis of isotropic and laminated plates are validated with available data in the existing literature, which show excellent agreement. Furthermore, some new results are presented for vibration analysis of functionally graded material plates to study effects of the location of line supports, material properties, volume fraction, temperature, loading, aspect ratio and speed.

Resumen
Ridge subduction follows the approach of an oceanic spreading centre towards a trench and subduction of the leading oceanic plate beneath the overriding plate. There are four possible kinematic scenarios: (1) welding of the trailing and overriding plates (e.g., Aluk–Antarctic Ridge beneath Antarctica); (2) slower subduction of the trailing plate (e.g., Nazca–Antarctic Ridge beneath Chile and Pacific–Izanagi Ridge beneath Japan); (3) transform motion between the trailing and overriding plates (e.g., San Andreas Transform); or (4) divergence between the overriding and trailing plates (e.g., Pacific – North America). In case 4, the divergence may be accommodated in two ways: the overriding plate may be stretched (e.g., Basin and Range Province extension, which has brought the continental margin into collinearity (and, therefore, transform motion) with the Pacific – North America relative motion); or divergence may occur at the continental margin and be manifest as a change in rate and direction of sea-floor spreading because the pair of spreading plates changes (e.g., from Pacific–Farallon to Pacific – North America), spawning a secondary spreading centre (i.e., Gorda – Juan de Fuca – Explorer ridge system) that migrates away from the overriding plate.Mantle upwelling associated with sea-floor spreading ridges is widely regarded as a passive consequence, rather than an active cause, of plate divergence. Geological and geophysical phenomena attendant to ridge–trench interaction suggest that regardless of the kinematic relations among the three plates, a thermal anomaly formerly associated with the ridge migrates beneath the overriding plate. The persistence of this thermal anomaly demonstrates that active mantle upwelling may continue for tens of millions of years after ridge subduction. Thus, regardless of whether the mantle upwelling was active or passive at its origin, it becomes active if the spreading continues for sufficient time and, thus, must contribute to the driving mechanism of plate tectonics.

Resumen
The stability and dynamics of the two-dimensional elastic plate with simply supported boundary conditions in uniform axial subsonic flow were studied. The governing equations of coupled elastic plate in axial flow were derived based on the potential theory. The finite difference method was employed to discrete the governing equation and the flow potential function. The governing equation can be expressed as the function of structural transverse vibration displacement by the matrix operations. The eigenvalue method was used to analyze the stability of the elastic plate, the results of which show that the models with simply supported boundary conditions undergo divergent instability when flow velocity reaches the critical value, the critical divergence velocity is in close agreement with theoretical result using other analytical approaches.

Resumen
The increase in time-integrated divergence of a 1.7-MeV, 10-MA relativistic electron beam due to transport over 10 cm in a gas cell filled with 1 and 6 Torr of nitrogen was measured. The divergence was characterized by a multiple-pinhole beam sampling technique involving an aperture plate, an expansion region, and an attenuator plate followed by nylon radiochromic film. The divergence is determined by a fit of the measured deposition profile to response functions calculated using Monte Carlo coupled electronphoton transport codes. The initial value of 6.9° after the entrance foil is observed to increase to 12°. The errors in the measurement are quantified with Monte Carlo techniques. The response function fit gives a significantly better estimate of the divergence than a Gaussian fit.

Resumen
Flow-induced vibrations and hydroelastic instabilities of rectangular parallel-plate assemblies are studied theoretically. The extended Galerkin method is employed to solve the plate equation, while the Fourier transform technique is used to solve for the perturbation pressure from the potential flow equations. The mixed fluid-plate interaction boundary condition leads to a singular integral equation, which is solved numerically. The complex frequencies versus flow velocity and critical velocities are obtained for various plate aspect ratios and channel-height-to-plate-width ratios. The frequencies and critical velocities are found to decrease as the plate length increases and as the channel height decreases. Two types of instability are found, namely, single-mode divergence, mostly in the first mode, and coupled-mode flutter involving adjacent modes. Damping has a significant effect on post-divergence stability and coupled-mode flutter of the system. [S0094-9930(00)00403-0]

Resumen
High speed photography using the Cranz-Schardin camera was performed to study the crack divergence and divergence angle in thermally tempered glass. A tempered 3.5 mm thick glass plate was used as a specimen. It was shown that two types of bifurcation and branching existed as the crack divergence. The divergence angle was smaller than the value calculated from the principle of optimal design and showed an acute angle.

Aeroelastic instabilities of steel strips impinged by arrays of cooling gas jets have becomeone of the main issues in cooling sections of continuous annealing lines. Indeed, the new steeltreatments require very high temperature variation rates which involve increases in jetvelocities that are likely to onset some aeroelastic instabilities. Strip flutter and divergencehave already been observed and identified. These two aeroelastic instabilities imply a strongrisk of contact with the blowing boxes, which can seriously blemish the strip. An experimental test rig was designed and built in order to analyze and predict of theseinstabilities. From observations, the strip’s structural dynamics was simulated by a rigidrotation mode. The rig included a forced oscillating plate which is impinged by an array ofaxisymmetric jets having the exact industrial geometry. The plate was instrumented withpressure sensors to measure the steady and unsteady surface pressures. The impingement ofinteracting jets creates very large pressure gradients on the plate and therefore a tight mesh ofpressure taps (91 over an 18cm² jet impingement surface) was necessary to allow a goodestimation of the aerodynamic loads The plate could also be moved in the three coordinatedirections as to obtain surface mappings of the unsteady jet forces and aeroelastic coefficientscan be obtained over a wide area and different jet-to-plate distances. The variation of the impinging aerodynamic forces was established as a function of the jetto-plate distance for different nozzle geometries. These results were used to determine the jetstatic stability in plunging motion. Velocity and turbulence measurements in free jets werecarried out using hot wire anemometry in order to determine their statistical properties.Aeroelastic coefficient measurements were carried out on the oscillating plate with onlyone nozzle geometry and different reduced velocities. Results show that the plate’s stability ismainly dependent on the boundary effects. Post processing methods are suggested in order toapply the results to larger plates. Results are compared to the data of Regardin et al. (réf. [1])and emphasize some discrepancies with respect to the real case. Finally some improvementsto the test-rig are suggested for it to be more representative of the industrial situation

In this thesis we study the flat model, the main buidling block for the spinfoam ap- proach to quantum gravity, with an emphasis on its divergences. Besides a personal introduction to the problem of quantum gravity, the manuscript consists in two part. In the first one, we establish an exact powercounting formula for the bubble divergences of the flat model, using tools from discrete gauge theory and twisted cohomology. In the second one, we address the issue of spinfoam continuum limit, both from the lattice field theory and the group field theory perspectives. In particular, we put forward a new proof of the Borel summability of the Boulatov-Freidel-Louapre model, with an improved control over the large-spin scaling behaviour. We conclude with an outlook of the renormalization program in spinfoam quantum gravity

Specialization in different environments is a driver of divergence between populations and species. Phytophagous insects are interesting candidates to study the speciation process via the ecological specialization, due to the intimate relationship between the insects and their host plant but also the regular occurrence of host changes they experienced during evolution. Ecological speciation requires three important components: a source of divergent selection, a form of reproductive isolation either pre- or post-zygotic, and a mechanism linking the genes under selection to those responsible of the reproductive isolation. In this context, we studied the reproductive isolation and specialization in two models polyphagous lepidopteran pests: (1) the European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis, and the closely related species Ostrinia scapulalis, (2) two host races of Spodoptera frugiperda (the fall armyworm), rice strain (sf-R) and corn strain (sf-M). Both models showed a patterns of diversification via the host plant: both species sisters and the two strains are genetically differentiated and are specialized on different host plants (maize for O. nubilalis and sf-M; mugwort for O. scapulalis; rice sf-R). We studied the patterns of specialization of these models by quantification of life history traits in two time points of their life-cycles: (1) in the larval instar, by reciprocal transplant experiments, (2) in the adult, by choice oviposition experiment. These measures highlighted a pattern of specialization at the adult and/or larval instar for both moth species and sf-M. However, the results showed no clear specialization for sf-R of S. frugiperda on the tested plants. We investigated the mechanisms of specialization by RNA-seq in order to identify the genes or the gene families for which variation of their expression depends on the host plant. This mechanistic study revealed genes involved in detoxification, digestion and immunity process that may explain the differences observed in life history traits. Finally, we quantified various barriers (pre- and post-zygotic) to estimate the divergence degree and the causes involved in reproductive isolation of genetic entities studied. In particular, for the two models, we found evidences of post-zygotic barriers with a lower percentage of hatching in the interspecific crosses. In Ostrinia model, we have also demonstrated the presence of pre-zygotic barrier depending of the pheromone blend emitted by the females

Leibniz is a constant, but often overlooked, presence in Deleuze’s philosophy. This book explains three key moments in Deleuze’s philosophical development through the lens of his engagement with Leibniz. In doing so it hopes to offer a focused framework for understanding some of the most difficult aspects of Deleuze’s philosophy. Part One examines Deleuze’s account of the “anti-Cartesian reaction” of Spinoza and Leibniz which culminates in their two competing theories of expression. It argues that in some key respects Deleuze favours Leibniz’s interpretation of this key concept over Spinoza’s. Part Two looks at Deleuze’s critique of representation and his attempt to create a theory of difference that will underlie, rather than rely upon, conceptual opposition. It examines the crucial role played by the Leibnizian concepts of incompossibility and divergence in Deleuze’s theory of ‘vice-diction’, created in order to offer a sub-representational, or pre-individual, substitute for Hegelian contradiction. Part Three looks in detail at one of Deleuze’s last major works, The Fold. It argues for Leibniz’s central place in this text, and shows how Deleuze uses concepts from across Leibniz’s philosophy and mathematics as a framework to articulate a systematic account of his own mature philosophy.

Resumen
There have been an increasing need for greater integration of many Asian economies, either within the confines of ASEAN or on a more geo-economically strategic scale including major Asian jurisdictions like China, Japan, and Korea. A number of key personalities within the regional legal fraternity have advanced views that such integration ought to occur through the harmonization of legal rules, arguing that in doing so, uncertainty and other transaction costs would be reduced and commercial confidence within the region concomitantly increased. This edited volume brings together eminent and promising scholars and practitioners to investigate what convergence and divergence means in their respective fields and for Asia. Interwoven in the details of each tale of convergence is whether and how convergence ought to take place, and in so choosing, what are the attendant consequences for that choice.

Resumen
Abstract Matters of space, spatiality, geography, topography, and place have mostly remained neglected in modern scholarship and teaching because in most modern and postmodern literary criticism history and temporality have been dominating discourses. But in recent criticism, the ‘when’ and ‘what’ of literature yield place to ‘where’ as Michel Foucault declared the present time as ‘the epoch of space’. Literature reflects a spirit of place and a sense of place because place is known and given meaning when it is felt and closely experienced by human beings living in it. This humanistic geographical emphasis on human experience of place opens up the possibility of an interdisciplinary study of literature of geography. Literature creates and recreates geography in its own way and there are many ways of looking at literary representation of space and place. The book is meant to offer a good introduction to those divergent ways in which place, topography, and geography evince themselves in literature.

Resumen
Gina Zavota’s “Plotinus’ ‘Reverse’ Platonism: A Deleuzian Response to the Problem of Emanation Imagery” attempts a radical rethinking of the Plotinian question of emanation through the lens of Deleuze’s account of ontological individuation and actualization. Zavota notes that, despite its widespread acceptance as a Plotinian concept, Plotinus himself acknowledges the inadequacy of the language of emanation. Rather, just as Deleuze’s virtual Idea does not impose order upon the plane of consistency but instead simply indicates divergent lines of generation, Plotinus’ One does not predetermine the organization of things from above. Instead, the variety of generated objects, from the Intellect down to the barest material particulars, self-organize through the inherently generative operation of contemplation or turning towards the One. Thus contemplation is an act of differentiation, and Plotinus’ philosophy can be read as a counter-Platonism or divergent-Platonism.

Resumen
This chapter begins by introducing the Model Law on Cross-Border Insolvency (‘the Model Law’), which was adopted by the UN Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) in May 1997 and approved formally in December. Its purpose originally was to provide a template for use by countries seeking to put into place a cross-border insolvency regime, or strengthen one already in existence. This chapter looks at how the US and UK, despite seemingly seeking to adopt the same Model Law, in reality have very different conceptions of how it is to work in practice. The chapter starts with a brief examination of the objectives and scope of the Model Law, before analysing in more detail key aspects of the US and English versions and the reasons why there appears to be a growing divergence in the way in which the Model Law is applied in practice.

Resumen
AbstractThere is no shortage of terms—collaborative economy, sharing economy or cognitive capitalism—to describe the new work practices brought about by the spreading digital economy. The French ‘Third place’ movement, reuniting diverse collaborative workplaces, has been claiming the search for more sustainable ways of living as a goal. Recently, numerous public funding programmes have been deployed to support such places. This chapter focusses on coworking spaces and their users to unfold energy consumption discourses and practices of coworkers, based on a survey conducted during 2017–2020 in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. It demonstrates lack of awareness of the ‘hidden energies’ of work digitalisation. Though most coworkers display eco-friendly values, attitudes towards digital technology reflect divergences within the forms of appropriation of norms of transition towards sustainability.

Abstract This chapter takes a close look at the mutually constitutive relationship between asylum casebooks and published literature on mental disease. It follows melancholia as it travelled back and forth between the casebook and the textbook, emerging as an increasingly coherent diagnosis. While medical literature presented melancholia in remarkably standardised terms toward the end of the century, by comparing published accounts with asylum journal notes from major county asylums situated in different parts of the country, this chapter shows how a vast and vastly divergent range of human expressions and experiences were moulded to fit increasingly narrow diagnostic criteria, and brings into focus the conflicts that arise and the negotiations that take place when complex human emotions are labelled and categorised as mental disorders.

Abstract An model of a gyroelastic thin plate is presented. The equations of motion and boundary conditions are derived when the system is subject to in-plane external loads. It is shown that these systems can display both static instabilities (divergence) and dynamic instabilities (flutter), that the structure of the stability regions depends on the aspect ratio of the plate and that gyroscopic stabilization is sometimes possible.

Resumen
The aeroelastic stability of rectangular plates are well-documented in literature for certain sets of boundary conditions. Specifically, wing flutter, panel flutter, and divergence of a plate that is clamped on all sides are well-understood. However, the ongoing push for lighter structures and novel designs have led to a need to understand the aeroelastic behavior of elastic plates for other boundary conditions. One example is NASA’s continuous mold-line link project for reducing the noise generated by commercial transport aircraft during landing; in order to reduce the noise generated by vortex shedding from the trailing edge flap during landing, the project proposes to connect the gap between the trailing edge flap and the rest of the wing with a flexible plate. This paper summarizes the aeroelastic theory, numerical results, and experimental results of a study on the flutter and/or divergence mechanisms of a rectangular plate for different sets of structural boundary conditions. The theory combines a three-dimensional vortex lattice aerodynamic model with a plate structural model to create a high-fidelity frequency domain aeroelastic model. A modular experimental test bed is designed for this study in order to test the different boundary conditions. The test bed is also designed to test different plate thicknesses and sizes with only a small number of modifications. The well-understood boundary conditions are used as test cases to validate the analysis results, and then results of additional configurations that have not been extensively explored are presented. The results of this paper can be used to support the design efforts of projects involving plates or plate-membranes. In addition, the paper adds to the fundamental understanding of plate aeroelasticity and provides a wealth of experimental data for comparison and future validation.

Resumen
Static instability of flexible structures forced by a parallel flow, a.k.a. divergence, has been the subject of a relatively small amount of studies, unlike flutter. In order to prepare future studies of the collective behaviour of several slender structures coupled by the fluid in axial flow, the canonical case of a flat flexible plate clamped at both ends is investigated numerically and experimentally. The onset of divergence is determined throughout a series of calculation of the fluid forces generated by a prescribed deformation of the plate. Using the Galerkin method, these fluid forces are expanded in the basis of the natural modes; they exactly balance the mechanical forces when the fluid velocity reaches the instability threshold. The instability velocity can be determined by an eigenvalue calculation involving the fluid force expansion and the modal stiffnesses of the plate. Comparisons are provided with 2D analytical calculations and with an experiment performed with a 0.3m×0.03m mylar plate at Reynolds numbers varying between 104 and 105. A fair agreement is observed between the 3D potential calculation and the experiments, whereas the 2D analytical solution underestimates the instability velocity by a factor higher than 2.

Resumen
Strip vibration is an important issue in the industrial steel cooling process using arrays of gas jets. Indeed, the recent growing demand for “rapid cooling” has led to a significant increase in jet velocities and some complex sheet flutter phenomena have appeared where, under certain conditions, the strip motion couples with the aerodynamic action of the jets. This aeroelastic behaviour can cause large strip oscillations and even divergence implying a strong risk of contact with the blowing boxes, which can seriously damage the strip. From observations it was assumed relevant to consider the strip as a rigid plate oscillating on its fundamental torsion mode. Hence the system is modelled as a damped oscillator with one degree of freedom in torsion and the aeroelastic forces on the plate are assumed to be a linear combination of the plate’s angular position and its time derivative. These forces can be expressed in terms of an aeroelastic stiffness coefficient and an aeroelastic damping coefficient. If one of these two coefficients becomes critical, one of two instabilities can occur: namely either divergence or flutter. A simplified half-scale model of an industrial cooling unit was built, in line with the above assumptions consisting of a rigid plate oscillating in torsion between arrays of round jets impinging on it on both sides. The measured angular position of the plate yielded the aeroelastic stiffness and damping coefficients. A parametric study led to the definition of a relevant governing reduced velocity based on the jet-to-plate distance and showed different blowing configurations where existing divergence was shifted to higher reduced velocities or even totally cancelled. Although the divergence instability of the system was well demonstrated, the role of the aeroelastic damping coefficient on the plate’s oscillations was not well identified and the industrial problem thus remains unsolved. Therefore further work is focusing on the aeroelastic behaviour of different configurations of interacting jets impinging on a rigid plate. Here the plate is forced to oscillate in torsion and is instrumented with pressure sensors (96 for an 18 cm2 jet impingement surface) to measure the unsteady jet force and provide local aeroelastic coefficients. As the plate can be translated in the three coordinate directions, surface mappings of the unsteady jet forces are obtained and analysed to give some insight into the characteristics of the aeroelastic behaviour. The integrated forces are also correlated with the earlier results.

Resumen
This paper presents calculations performed to determine the critical flow velocity for plate collapse due to static instability for the Gas Test Loop booster fuel assembly. Long, slender plates arranged in a parallel configuration can experience static divergence and collapse at sufficiently high coolant flow rates. Such collapse was exhibited by the Oak Ridge High Flux Reactor in the 1940s and the Engineering Test Reactor at the Idaho National Laboratory in the 1950s. Theoretical formulas outlined by Miller, based upon wide-beam theory and Bernoulli’s equation, were used for the analysis. Calculations based upon Miller’s theory show that the actual coolant flow velocity is only 6% of the predicted critical flow velocity. Since there is a considerable margin between the theoretically predicted plate collapse velocity and the design velocity, the phenomena of plate collapse due to static instability is unlikely.

To reproduce the near field intensity of laser beam in the back SBS beam, it is needed to obtain the phase conjugation (PC) fidelity h≥0.95, where h= |∫∫ELEsdxdy|2/[∫∫|EL|2dxdy·∫∫|Es|2dxdy], EL and Es are the laser and Stokes field amplitudes. Such big values of h were attainable at SBS in light waveguide only [1]. However, the waveguide wall damage resistance is a challenge In the case of focused laser beam one can overcome the damage problem but at the cost of decreasing h up to ~0.3 (near SBS threshold and at the divergence θL exceeding θD = λ/a by ≥3 times). In the present talk we optimize a special arrangement of PC-mirror [2] that can give a new way of achieving nearly perfect PC with h≥0.95 in focused beams.

Resumen
Uni-axially tensioned wide webs and narrow ribbons commonly used in the paper-handling, textile, sheet-metal, and plastics industries are known to undergo large amplitude vibrations characterized as aeroelastic flutter. The aeroelastic stability of stationary wide webs and narrow ribbons coupled with fluid flow across the free edges of the web or ribbon is investigated in this article. The web or ribbon is modeled as a uni-axially tensioned Kirchhoff plate with vanishingly small bending stiffness. The 3D unsteady fluid flow surrounding the web or ribbon is evaluated numerically by using the vortex-lattice method. Wide webs are mainly found to exhibit the divergence instability. For some values of the applied tension, the clustered web modes exhibit frequency curve veering accompanied by a weak flutter instability before the occurrence of the divergence instability. The applied tension plays a critical role in deciding the type of instability in narrow ribbons. In cross flow, depending on the applied tension, narrow ribbons undergo flutter instability or divergence instability or the simultaneous onset of both instabilities.
