Resumen
Saab has a product, Remote Tower, which allows air traffic controllers to supervise and control an airport remotely. Today an air traffic controller can operate on one airport at the time and switch between airports. The next phase of this system is to allow the air traffic controller to simultaneously control multiple airports, i.e. going from controlling airports in sequence to controlling airports in parallel. The airports are connected to and controlled from one single airport control center. This leads to a planning problem, both in long term and short term, for staffing this airport control center to maintain the capacity of the connected airports. This thesis will present the process of the development of a tool allowing a user to plan the schedule the staffing of a remote tower center. By utilizing this tool the impact of different restrictions affecting the planning will be evaluated and presented in the results.

Patange, Vinay Baburao. "Tool planning in batch manufacturing". Thesis, Sheffield Hallam University, 1993. http://shura.shu.ac.uk/20211/.

Resumen
This work concentrates on the newly growing science of managing tooling in conventional manufacturing. Various Tool Management (TM) problems and the approaches suggested by other researchers to solve these problems are given. This work establishes the basic structure of TM applicable to a conventional manufacturing. Systems Analysis and Design Methodology (SSADM) is used to study the information needs of a typical TM System. It is stressed that the majority of TM problems are due to unavailability of correct information. Success of any TM system depends upon having a good Information System. This work focuses on the tool planning problems in batch manufacturing. The causes of tool planning problems are discussed. The research aims to develop a generic methodology for planning the tools. The information required to carry out the primary functions of any Tool Planning System (TPS) is identified. The fundamental characteristics of different tools from the planning perspective are studied in detail. The principles on which a generic TPS could be designed are laid out. The mechanism of a Tool Planning System is developed. The TPS model is implemented using Foxpro, a DBMS. This model illustrates the concepts of planning tools with the information that can be obtained from other functions of manufacturing. The effectiveness of the developed TPS model is investigated using simulation. The impact of the TPS on the performance of a typical Job Shop Environment is studied and compared with other models with traditional stock control approaches. A suitable statistical method is used for analysing and comparing the simulation results. The advantages and the limitations of the TPS are discussed. Some of the potential benefits include, very low tool shortages, minimum number of purchase requirements and better estimation of tool inventory levels. Furthermore, the TPS acts as a firm guideline for planning the tools in time buckets.

The research attempted to model the trip generation and the subsequent modal splits resulting thereof. The sketch planning tool to be developed attempted to predict within reasonable accuracy limits, the travel trends and hence the transport modes used for the undertaking of these trips. To gain an in depth understanding of the task, the "status quo" mobility conditions for Windhoek had to be well understood. Only once when the existing trends are fully understood, can one begin to derive a model that is able to model, the expressed mobility trends.

Resumen
Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited
The Automated Reconnaissance and Surveillance (R&S) Planning Tool is a prototype of the Army's proposed Common Ground Station, and serves as a Intelligence interface to NPSNET. This system incorporates Intelligence Preparation of the Battlefield (IPB) and intelligence asset modeling in order to create realistic intelligence collection. IPB is the analysis of the affects of the terrain, weather, and enemy doctrine on the friendly situation. Intelligence System Modeling is performed for Mounted and Dismounted Scouts, Ground Surveillance Radars (GSR), Joint Surveillance and Attack Radar System (JSTARS), and Remotely Piloted Vehicles (RPV). These systems' collection effort can be monitored by displaying their individual perspectives of the battlefield, or their combined collection effort can be plotted on a 2D or 3D representation of the Terrain. The raw intelligence data produced by these systems is analyzed according to the number and types of enemy vehicles located. Probable enemy courses of action are also generated. Automated R&S planning can greatly enhance the already lethal capability of the Army by speeding up the Collection and Dissemination Process.

In times where Roth IRA's are condoned by the government, Social Security is failing, and the US economy is considered by some to be in a recession, there is no doubt that Americans need help with their finances and budgeting for the future. Concrete Budget aims to turn the idea of money, which is difficult to gestate to its fluid and abstract nature, into something tangible and easier to conceptualize. The main abstraction used to solidify a person's budget is by the use of goals (e.g. buying a house, paying for a child's tuition) that can be traded off from one to the other in order to understand the effects of savings a little money on X in order to have enough money for Y. Concrete Budget will strive to be simple and aesthetically pleasing in order to be adopted by uncle Joe, grandma Jane, and even that baby brother who always seems to get himself into tight situations.

Resumen
Positioning is an important tool of marketing planning and brand building on the market. Positionig is a streategy that helps marketers to differentiate the brand from those of competition and creaete unique brand perception in minds of target consumers. In a proces of positioning development four core elements must be defined and analyzed -- target consumer, unique consumer benefit which brand offeres to the target consumer, brand and its brand equity and competitors from whom we want to differentiate the brand. In my dissertation I address both, theoretical attitudes toward positioning and its definition, as well as practical application of theoretical conclusions in case study from corporate practice

Resumen
This thesis focuses on the development of a distributed software project planning tool that enables more than one participant to prepare the different parts of the project scope, schedule and task assignment by allowing to utilize the predefined organizational level processes. For this purpose, we discuss the need for a distributed software project planning tool, identify tool requirements and compare available tools with respect to the requirements. In addition, we evaluate the tool based on two criteria: first one is the tool&rsquo
s adequacy to meet the identified functional attributes and the second one is the validation of the tool by utilizing the data of the project schedule of a real project. This tool enables preparation of project scope, schedule and task assignments in a more effective, accurate and seamless way.

Texto completo
Resumen
Thesis (M.C.P.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Urban Studies and Planning, 2002.
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 80-84).
The Public Housing Agency (PHA) Plan was introduced in 1998 as part of the landmark Quality Housing and Work Responsibility Act. The stated purpose of this legislation was to reform public housing by "deregulating and decontrolling public housing authorities, thereby enabling them to perform as property and asset managers." The complex, topdown bureaucratic rules and regulations promulgated in Washington were no longer deemed workable. Congress strove to foster a new relationship with public housing authorities that replaced the single, top-down, cookie-cutter approach with the flexibility and local authority necessary to foster individual initiative and develop context-based solutions that recognize the unique nature and dynamics of individual neighborhoods and communities. Yet, upon examination of the statutory and regulatory requirements of the PHA Plan, it becomes evident that Congress and the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) have missed their mark. Unfortunately, neither Congress nor HUD have articulated how deregulation and decontrol will necessarily result in better performance as property and asset managers. Ultimately, this omission undermined Washington's ability to effect its public housing reform agenda. By rigidly prescribing the content and introducing a uniform, electronic format, the PHA Plan appears to be driven more by technology and the ease of the review and approval process than by the needs of public housing authorities and their constituents. More importantly, as demonstrated by a case study of the Boston Housing Authority, the PHA Plan fails to reinforce locally based initiatives designed to revitalize public housing using established real estate principles. Drawing on extensive research, interviews with key actors and the author's own experiences as a planner with the Boston Housing Authority, this thesis will explore the factors that contributed to the disjunction between the stated purpose of the PHA Plan and the way the requirements have actually played out at the local level. Based upon these observations, recommendations are offered to change the statutory and/or regulatory requirements to better serve public housing agencies in their efforts to improve as property and asset managers.

Costello, Seosamh. "An integrated strategic planning tool for road maintenance funding". Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2001. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.633080.

Texto completo
Resumen
Previous research in pavement management systems in the United Kingdom has primarily concerned itself with one or other of the two maintenance "tracks" of project and network level analysis. Those systems that do combine both "tracks" adopt a micro level approach to strategic planning at the network level. This work redresses that imbalance by advancing upon previous work, in the form of System BSM and NETCOM, in the development of the Strategic Planning Model (SPM) suite of software programs. In addition, it was decided to include a maintenance standards selection process, which would take account of sociopolitical preferences in addition to economics and legislation in the decision process. This necessitated the creation of a completely new process for the selection of maintenance standards based on multiple criteria analysis (MCA). The SPM adopts a macro level approach to strategic planning, through the STRAT-2 component, while at the same time addressing the much sought after link between the project and network levels by way of the project to network interface (PNI). The PNI provides for seamless transfer of all relevant data, between STRAT-2 and the project to network level system HMS-2, thereby ensuring that detailed project level decisions are not taken in isolation but instead take account of political and economic constraints made at the network level. Conversely it ensures that global or strategic decisions are not taken without reference to the true situation of the road network under review. Maintenance standards selection is executed through the MCA component of the software. The central database (CDB), placed at the heart of the process, ensures integrity of data across the system thereby allowing the strategic decision making process, in STRAT-2, and the prioritisation process, in HMS-2, to proceed with confidence. The CDB has also been designed as a "shell" capable of being customised to the agency's requirements, however basic or advanced in the first instance. This ensures accessibility to a broad spectrum of agencies, from the highly advanced to the resource scarce. This same "shell" design also ensures sustainability of the system by providing the necessary flexibility to evolve with the agency's requirements. Finally, the SPM has been successfully trialed as part of a full scale study on the A30/A35 Exeter to Bere Regis Design Build Finance and Operate (DBFO) project. The industrial sponsor has since taken this "pilot" study forward and is currently implementing the SPM not only on its sister project, the A50 Stoke Derby DBFO, but also as a decision support tool to assist in the bidding process for the forthcoming AI (M) DBFO tender bid. In addition, the industrial sponsor is currently in the process of implementing the SPM in the "Super" Agency Area 12 in Birmingham to assist with periodic maintenance planning.

Sustainable development and in particular sustainable urban development are now catchphrases for how most cities wish to develop. Sustainability indicators have been established as a tool to facilitate decision-making measures to simplify, clarify and gather information. The idea is that indicators should control and follow through sustainability efforts but also serve as a tool to communicate ideas, thoughts and values. The aim of this study is to describe how sustainability indicators can help to streamline sustainability efforts. By looking at how three Swedish municipality use indicators along with research in the theoretical field a conclusion that shows that there are major weaknesses in the systems applied today is presented. The research advocates a few indicators based on both qualitative and quantitative values where communication is central which completely goes against what the municipalities are doing at the moment. New indicator systems based on participation where the intended audience is primary would lead to a broader understanding of sustainability goals, which is a requisite for achieving them. Indicators could facilitate decision-making where the role of management and monitoring will be key along with communication towards sustainability. As a citizen it is difficult to influence or understand sustainability projects when they are not presented in an understandable way and when it is difficult to monitor development. In the end of the study a preliminary project on how an internal process in developing a new indicator system is presented.

Resumen
Within the field 'artificial intelligence' are many disciplines, one of which is planning. Planning seeks to find a suitable sequence of actions to carry out a task specified as a set of initial states for the objects involved in the actions and a required goal state. To do this the system has to have enough knowledge about the 'world' in the form of a planning domain model The process of constructing a planning domain model requires knowledge engineering. The structuring of the knowledge is important and hand-coding a domain model is a tedious and error-prone process. Static knowledge in the domain requires little update but the same cannot be said for the dynamic knowledge.

Mahlambi, Sizwe Blessing. "Strategic planning: a tool for effective management of schools". Thesis, University of Zululand, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10530/1451.

Texto completo
Resumen
A dissertation submitted to the Faculty of Education in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Education in the Department of Education Foundations and Management at the University Of Zululand, South Africa, 2015
The aim of this study is to investigate the role of strategic planning in the management of schools. Strategic Planning refers to the combined effort of people with interest in education (stakeholders) to develop a common goal for a particular school. Everyone within the boundaries of the school (teachers, learners and parents) then work toward the attainment of such a goal. From the literature study it becomes clear that strategic planning should commence with a study of the environment. “Environment” is an all inclusive word in this context that refers to both internal and external environments. The internal environment includes inherent factors that strengthen or weaken the school’s position. The external environment includes outside opportunities that the school may have as well as the threats that are brought by outside influences, including other schools or the community. The literature survey supplies a vast amount of evidence to support the belief that successful organisations are goal orientated. What all successful schools have in common is a well discussed mission / goal that people in that particular school works towards. A goal orientated school is characterised by parental involvement in matters concerning the school; by learner performance because of set standards; by educator competence because of available resources for effective teaching; and by teamwork, trust and participation in all activities in the school. For the purpose of the empirical investigation, a self-structured questionnaire for educators was utilized. The data obtained from the completed questionnaires was processed and analysed by means of descriptive statistics. The findings from the empirical study confirmed that most schools are still lacking in goal setting and- management expert skills. In conclusion a summary of the study, based on the findings of the literature and empirical studies is presented, with the following recommendations: • Programmes in the form of workshops should be developed to empower parents in their involvement in schools. • Implementation of training and education of the school management teams with regard to the running of the schools. • Further research should to be done to improve planning and management of the schools.

Weyer, Christopher. "The viability of the trust as an estate planning tool". Diss., University of Pretoria, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/65636.

Texto completo
Resumen
Much focus is being placed on the future viability of trusts as estate planning tools. The Davis Tax Committee has been established with one of its objectives being to investigate and make recommendations, with a view of curbing the misuse or abuse of the trust form. A number of these recommendations have been incorporated into legislation. This has resulted in the trust being viewed as having been, or about to be, stripped of the benefits which make it a viable estate planning tool. This mini-dissertation investigates as to whether the trust is still a viable estate planning tool. Chapter 1 presents the research problem and poses research questions that will be discussed with the aim of establishing the viability of the trust as an estate planning tool. In attempting to address this research problem chapter 2 deals with an investigation into the viability of employing the trust as protection mechanism of (estate) assets. Questions pertaining to the insolvency of the various parties to the trust are addressed. Furthermore, the possibility of trust assets being considered part of the founder’s estate during divorce proceedings, are investigated. Chapter 3 considers the impact of taxation on the viability of the trust as an estate planning tool. An in depth discussion is undertaken pertaining to the Davis Tax Committee and Taxation Laws Amendment Act of 2016 and Taxation Laws Amendment Bill and Act of 2017, particularly the impact section 7C of the Income Tax Act 58 of 1962 has on loans by so called “connected persons” to the trust. Chapter 4 discusses further non-taxation uses of the trust and certain estate planning techniques incorporating trusts in practice. Chapter 5 contains the conclusion. It is submitted that the trust is still a viable estate planning tool.

Priddis, Andrew Scherbel. "Decomposition of Manufacturing Processes for Multi-User Tool Path Planning". BYU ScholarsArchive, 2016. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/6251.

Texto completo
Resumen
Engineering activities by nature are collaborative endeavors. Single-user applications like CAD, CAE, and CAM force a strictly serial design process, which ultimately lengthens time to market. New multi-user applications such as NXConnect address the issue during the design stage of the product development process by enabling users to work in parallel. Multi-user collaborative tool path planning software addresses the same serial limitations in tool path planning, thereby decreasing cost and increasing the quality of manufacturing processes. As part complexity increases, lead times are magnified by serial workflows. Multi-user tool path planning can shorten the process planning time. But, to be effective, it must be possible to intelligently decompose the manufacturing sequence and distribute path planning assignments among several users. A new method of process decomposition is developed and described in this research. A multi-user CAM (MUCAM) prototype was developed to test the method. The decomposition process and MUCAM prototype together were used to manufacture a part to verify the method.

Resumen
The evolution in precision manufacturing has resulted in the requirement to produce and maintain more accurate machine tools. This new requirement coupled with desire to reduce machine tool downtime places emphasis on the calibration procedure during which the machine's capabilities are assessed. Machine tool downtime can be as much as $120 per hour and is significant for manufacturers because the machine will be unavailable for manufacturing use, therefore wasting the manufacturer's time and potentially increasing lead-times for clients. In addition to machine tool downtime, the uncertainty of measurement, due to the schedule of the calibration plan, has significant implications on tolerance conformance, resulting in an increased possibility of false acceptance and rejection of machined parts. Currently calibrations are planned based on expert knowledge and there are no intelligent tools aiding to produce optimal calibration plans. This thesis describes a method of intelligently constructing calibration plans, optimising to reduce machine tool downtime and the estimated uncertainty of measurement due to the plan schedule. This resulted in the production of a novel, extensible domain model that encodes the decision making capabilities of a subject expert. Encoding the knowledge in PDDL2 requires the discretization of non-linear resources, such as continuous temperature change. Empirical analysis has shown that when this model is used alongside state-of-the-art automated planning tools, it is possible to achieve a reduction in machine tool downtime greater than 10% (12:30 to 11:18) over expert generated plans. In addition, the estimated uncertainty due to the schedule of the plan can be reduced by 59% (48 µm to 20 µm). Further experiments on a PC architecture investigate the trade-o when optimising calibration plans for both time and the uncertainty of measurement. These experiments demonstrated that it is possible to optimise both metrics reaching a compromise that is on average 5% worse that the best-known solution for each individual metric. Additional experiments using a High Performance Computing architecture show that on average optimality of calibration plans can be improved by 4%; a potential saving of 30 minutes for a single machine and 10 hours for a company with 20 machines tools. This could incur a financial saving in excess of $1200 saving.

Burger, Trinette. "The future of trusts as an estate planning tool / Burger T". Thesis, North-West University, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/7329.

Resumen
Estate planning is an important exercise aimed at increasing, preserving and protecting assets during a person's lifetime and providing for the disposition and continued utilisation of these assets after his death. The minimisation of estate duty, however, often dominates the motivation behind estate planning and many of the tools, structures and techniques used as part of the estate planning exercise are aimed at reducing or avoiding estate duty. One of these tools is the trust. In the 2010 Budget Review National Treasury suggested that taxes upon death should be reviewed. Such review may result in estate duty being abolished. Should this happen, the motivation behind many estate plans will dissipate and many estate plans that mainly focussed on estate duty will become ineffective. The question that comes to mind is whether trusts have a future as estate planning tools. Estate planning involves many different objectives and many of these objectives can be achieved through the use of trusts. Trusts have multiple benefits and only if a trust was set up solely to reduce or avoid estate duty, will such trust become superfluous. When looking at the use of trusts in countries that do not levy estate duty (such as Australia, Canada and New Zealand), it is clear that trusts remained useful and popular in these countries even after estate duty had been abolished. This is a strong indication that trusts have a future in South Africa and that the abolishment of estate duty will not affect the usefulness and popularity of trusts.

Cities around the world are actively aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in an effort to combat the negative consequences associated with anthropogenic climate change. The City of Boston is no exception-in 2011, then-mayor Tom Menino established the rigorous goals of reducing city-wide greenhouse gas emissions by 25% by 2020 and by 80% below 2005 levels by 2050. Given the realities of finite time and resources, it's critical to identify the most effective strategies to achieving energy efficiency in order to meet these objectives. This thesis explores how urban building energy modeling (UBEM) can be utilized to develop high-impact community-led energy efficiency programs. UBEM is a recently developed type of bottom-up energy modeling that presents a number of advantages over past urban energy modeling methods- namely, the ability for comparing complex scenarios, and the ability to generate hourly load profiles for individuals buildings. In addition, literature suggests that community-based energy efficiency programs achieve higher participation rates than traditional information-based programs. This thesis combines the technical benefits of UBEM with the practical advantages of community-led energy efficiency programs to develop a context-specific and community-based energy efficiency program for the Dudley Triangle neighborhood of Boston. It then explores how this type of a program can achieve the triple bottom line objectives of creating high quality local jobs, reducing environmental impacts, and supporting a local economy.

Resumen
The Radar Remote Sensing Group at the University of Cape Town is currently investigating the feasibility of building an active radar system employing the MeerKAT radio telescope as receiver for space debris detection, tracking and imaging. This dissertation details the development of a Mission Planning Tool (MPT) to perform sensor scheduling and to support the performance prediction and analysis of the proposed MeerKAT radar. The MeerKAT radar project proposal is made in the context of developing space surveillance and tracking capacities in South Africa. The MeerKAT radar is intended to operate bistatically, with a transmitter located in Bredasdorp (South Africa) and the MeerKAT radio telescope as receiver. The system design and radar signal processing design are currently under development in another RRSG project. Before the feasibility study can progress further, a Mission Planning Tool has been developed to assist in scheduling the bistatic radar to perform an observation experiment, to calculate the predicted radar measurements and errors as well as to estimate the orbit of the observed object. This report documents how these objectives were met by the MPT software developed in Python. Given a LEO space object of interest’s Two Line Element set, the MPT performs orbit propagation with an SGP4 method to generate trajectories for radar performance evaluation. The MPT determines the most opportune epoch (the longest possible target dwell-time within the antenna beam) for executing an observation experiment with the MeerKAT radar. Space objects investigated in this project were found to be have spent between 4.5 s to 12.8 s in the transmitter’s illuminating beam. The MeerKAT radio telescopes are tasked to act as receivers at the appropriate antenna pointing and time period. Based on the bistatic geometry of the specific observation experiment, the MPT predicts the signal-to-noise ratio at the radar receiver as well as the bistatic range, bistatic Doppler shift and look angles. The integrated SNR values for the experiments considered in this report ranged from 11 dB to 68 dB. From the coherently integrated SNR, the MPT estimates the radar measurement errors. Finally, the orbit determination module was engineered with two radar measurement schemes: a bistatic range and Doppler shift scheme and a bistatic range and look angles scheme. Monte Carlo experiments were run to evaluate the tracking performance resulting from the two tracking schemes. The Gauss-Newton tracking filter based on the first scheme fails to converge whereas it produces accurate results with the second scheme (estimated position error of 2 m and velocity error of 0.08 m/s). It is therefore recommended to opt for the bistatic range and look angles measurement scheme in future work. Since the current MeerKAT radar design cannot create look angles measurements, an observables estimation scheme was adopted. It was found that this scheme produced accurate elevation and azimuth angles with an estimation error of ±0.04◦ . Since the quoted values result from a preliminary design of the MeerKAT radar, they are bound to change in the final design. Therefore the MPT should be loaded with the final radar design’s parameters and run again to produce useful results. This reports shows that, with the help of the Mission Planning Tool developed in this project, the proposed MeerKAT radar can be feasibly scheduled to observe and track space objects in the LEO regime based on a single target pass.

Resumen
The purpose of this project is to create a simplifiedtool for urban planning, to illustrate how differentparameters affect each other. The municipality ofUppsala and the company Atkins have investigatedthe possibility to implement several themes andaspects in a digital tool. Since urban planning has acomplex structure, only a few aspects are selectedin this report. This is a case study which examineshow an implementation of a carpool in a residentialarea affects the parameters ground use, carbondioxide emissions and social aspects such asridesharing and car ownership. A model has beencreated in MATLAB to visualize the environmentalimpact of a carpool compared to traditional parking. The results show that the environmental impactdecreases as the number of cars in the areadecreases. Further, the sensitivity analysis showsthat social factors may have a great impact on theenvironmental aspects. A decreased car usage andincreased ridesharing, where only traditional parkingis used, can result in an environmental improvementalmost corresponding to an area with only a carpoolsolution with the current car usage and ridesharing.

Manufacturing industries such as aerospace, mold factory, etc., often require machining complex surfaces and high precision products, using the traditional three-axis machine tool machining complex the surfaces, often result in repeated positioning precision error, and must consider cost in the design and manufacture of fixtures;the use of five-axis machine tools to process these products can effectively solve the above problem, that is to say, use of the five-axis machine tool machining precision parts has become the current trend. 5-axis machine tool has two more rotary axes relative to the traditional three-axis machine tools, so that its machining processing capability is more flexible, and thus the rotation axis has more influences on precision machining parts due to nonlinear error and the singular point. This is likely to cause the cutting tool path distortions, damage the surface and cause the severe vibration of the machine tool to damage the machine tool, and therefore the study of the singular point and its adjacent nonlinear error have become important issue. This paper presents a discussion on a singular point, its non-linear error, and their relationship in various types of machine tools. Based on chord error assessment, we interpolated a tool path by using linear interpolation to modify the problems that non-linear errors produce. We obtained an NC code by using a post processor that we developed and by evaluating tool path manufacturing continually. In addition, we confirmed where the singular point occurs, as well as its influence on various types of type machine tools.

Resumen
The Texas Spacecraft Laboratory (TSL) at the University of Texas at Austin is currently planning to launch two CubeSat missions in 2014. Innovations are more readily attempted on such low-risk small satellites than with higher-cost payloads, which puts CubeSats at the forefront of space research. The TSL CubeSats will thus be used to pioneer and demonstrate new on-orbit technology. Due to the innovative aspect of the CubeSat missions, limited prior experience exists with the technology used. It is thus important to have an accurate understanding of mission operations prior to launch through computer simulation. In order to improve the success and reliability of current and future TSL missions, a MATLAB tool was developed to simulate on-orbit operations. The various capabilities of the user-friendly tool developed include power budget calculations, pass determination and orbit simulation. The comprehensive program can predict the life of the spacecraft at critical moments of its operation and, in general, help improve understanding of how to successfully meet mission requirements and design mission operations.

Abstract In this thesis, tool path planning of a table-type six-axis machine tool has been investigated. The tool path planning of the developed machine tool is different from the traditional approach. This is because the table-type six-axis machine tool is built based on parallel mechanisms. An effective method has been developed to analyze the motion among the machine tool and to determine tool path and tool orientation with the constraints of machine tool configuration and workpiece geometry. Examples have been demonstrated to illustrate this approach.

This study develops an effective method for identifying machining features. While recognizing features, the workpiece is sliced at some specified positions. The sectional curves of the workpiece faces and slicing plane constitute the feature profiles. Not only the isolated machining features but also the intersecting machining features can be identified by the information from these intersection profiles. As a result of slicing a 3D part into 2D pockets for generating tool paths, pocket is the one of main tasks. When a pocket is machined, it is an issue for finding the optimal result from the feasible tools. This paper presents a method which a upper bound O( N ) is used to choose the combination of optimal cutting tools, where N is the number of feasible tools. After the recognition of machining features, the recognized machining features can be applied for scheduling the manufacturing sequences. Different kinds of tool paths can be automatically generated for various machining features to improve the cutting efficiency. After the recognition of machining features and the choosing of tools, the generation of tool paths becomes another issue. Many researches remove the overcutting zones after the whole raw offsets are produced. The paper proposes a dynamic method to remove overcutting zones. This dynamic method can reduce the computational time number and thus secure against the dangers of errors. Meanwhile, a methodology is offered to solve the problem of pocket multi-islands. The speed for the generation of tool paths is even faster than some commercial CAD/CAM packages.

With the progress of NC technology, there is keener competition among the product. How to promote efficiency and economy has become the focus in the ind ustry. As far as NC machining is concerned, the first step to reach the above goal is to solve the problems of tool-path planning. As tool-path arrangeme nt seriously affects the quality and efficiency of machining, this research at tempts to improve the drawback of traditional planning by introducing the cons tant scallop-height methodology for milling. It effectively shortens the lengt h of tool path and achieves uniform machining surface with controlling the cho rdal deviation. In the proposed algorithm, the removal of unnecessary path usi ng ray-crossings principle is included to ensure the tool inside the part boun dary and the application can be extended to the surface with a hole. Simula tion and experimental analysis have been conducted in this research, and confi rm the practicality of the constant scallop-height method. The research also s hows the potential problems, and provides the solution. Finally the method is applied to hub surface machining in detail as a case study and more discussion s are made.

In this thesis, we present a cutter-feeding path planning for quadrilateral plane surface machining using a milling machine. Since the way of cutter feed impact the time and quality of machining, it is important to find an optimal cutter-feeding path. In the following discussion, regardless of the detail machining process, we assume that the shortest cutter -feeding path is optimal. We adopted the staircase technique in which the plane is first partitioned to many layers, then each layer is machined sequentially. The staircase machining had been successfully applied on triangular plane. In this paper, we extend the technique to quadrilateral plane machining. In the approach, the quadrilateral plane is first divided into two triangular planes. These two triangular planes are then machined by staircase method in sequence. We focus our discussion on the choice of a good quadrilateral partition in order to obtain the shortest cutter-feeding path.
