SummaryTo measure lateral and medial tibial plateau angle values in isolated canine tibiae and to compare lateral and medial tibial plateau angle values between dogs based on sex and breed.Tibiae of 90 dogs from 24 different breeds were used. Photographs were taken of the medial and lateral aspects of the tibiae for measurement of the medial and lateral tibial plateau angles. Additionally, the medial tibial plateau angle was measured from radiographs of the tibiae. Two-way analysis of variance was used to test the effects of side, sex and breed on the medial and lateral tibial plateau angles as measured from photographs as well as the medial tibial plateal angles as measured from radiographs. The photographic and radiographic medial tibial plateau angles were compared by paired t-test, whereas the medial and lateral photographic tibial plateau angles were compared by t-test.When all dogs were included in the analysis, the difference between the mean medial tibial plateau angle (24.0 ± 3.19°) and the mean lateral tibial plateau angle (25.5 ± 3.84°) as measured from photographs was significant (p <0.05). The difference in the photographic medial tibial plateau angle between male and female dogs was significant (p <0.05), whereas the difference in the photographic lateral tibial plateau angle between sexes was not significant. There was a significant difference between the medial and lateral tibial plateau angles as measured from photographs in male dogs (p <0.05) but not in female dogs. Breed comparisons also showed significant differences for the photographic lateral tibial plateau angle (p <0.05).The axial rotation of the femoral condyles on the tibial plateau is probably affected by the discrepancy between the medial and lateral tibial plateau angles, and this difference in certain breeds might influence the prevalence of cranial cruciate ligament disease.

Resumen

The cranial vertical angle (CVA) and cranial rotation angle (CRA) are used in clinical settings because they can be measured on lateral photographs of the head and neck. We aimed to clarify the relationship between CVA and CRA photographic measurements and radiographic cervical spine alignment. Twenty-six healthy volunteers were recruited for this study. Lateral photographs and cervical spine radiographs were obtained in the sitting position. The CVA and CRA were measured using lateral photographs of the head and neck. The C2-7 sagittal vertical axis (SVA), cervical lordosis (C2-7), and occipito-C2 lordosis (O-C2) were measured using radiographic imaging as a standard method of evaluating cervical spine alignment. Correlations between the CVA and CRA on photographs and cervical spine alignment on radiographs were analyzed. The CVA and SVA were significantly negatively correlated (ρ = −0.51; p < 0.05). Significant positive correlations were found between CVA and C2-7 (ρ = 0.59; p < 0.01) and between CRA and O-C2 (ρ = 0.65; p < 0.01). Evaluating the CVA and CRA on photographs may be useful for ascertaining head and neck alignment in the mid-lower and upper parts of the sagittal plane.

Resumen

Changes in underground environments have been predicted by investigating underground bedrock conditions and analyzing the shapes of discontinuities in the rocks. The most commonly used method is to drill a borehole, insert a camera inside and capture the wall of the borehole in a photograph to investigate the discontinuities. However, if the images of the borehole cannot be captured, the characteristics of the discontinuities in the bedrock are analyzed by capturing the drilling cores in photographs. In this case, considerable time is required to analyze the drilling cores with the naked eye and measure the attitudes of the discontinuities developed in the cores in detail. Moreover, the results may vary depending on the researcher’s perspective. To overcome these limitations, this study develops a program for analyzing photographs of drilling cores. The program can automatically identify discontinuities in drilling cores and measure the attitudes through linear fitting using only drilling core photographs. In addition, we apply the program to practical field data to verify its applicability. We found that the program could provide more accurate and objective information on drilling cores than the currently used method and could more effectively organize the characteristics of fractures in the study area.

Summary This paper discusses the usage of done in shes done send the photographs as a marker of completive aspect in the variety of English spoken on the island of Tristan da Cunha in the South Atlantic Ocean. The article outlines the various positions scholars have taken with reference to the diachronic status of completive done and discusses the structural properties of the (aux)+ done V construction in Tristan da Cunha English (TdCE). The aim of the analysis is twofold: first, to present a structural and semantic analysis of done as a marker of perfective aspect, with the aim of investigating if TdCE done has taken a different syntactic and semantic trajectory vis-à-vis its use in other varieties; and second, to explain the sociohistorical origins of done in this variety of South Atlantic English. The comparative analysis shows that particularly the structural properties of TdCE done differ significantly from those of other varieties; the diachronic examination shows the complexity of determining the contributions of transplant varieties, mixing of colonial varieties of English, and independent developments that originate in creolisation and/or language contact. Zusammenfassung Der folgende Artikel untersucht den Gebrauch des englischen Partizips done, zum Beispiel in shes done send the photographs, als kompletiven Aspektmarker in einem auf Tristan da Cunha im Südatlantik gesprochenen Dialekt der englischen Sprache. Der Artikel fasst die diversen diachronischen Standpunkte zusammen, zu welchen andere Studien zu diesem Thema gekommen sind, und untersucht die strukturellen Eigenschaften der (aux)+ done V Konstruktion in Tristan da Cunha English (TdCE). Die Analyse hat die folgenden zwei Hauptziele: erstens, die strukturellen und semantischen Charakteristika von done als kompletiven Aspektmarker aufzuzeigen, speziell auf die Frage hin, ob die strukturellen Eigenschaften von TdCE done sich deutlich von anderen Dialekten unterscheiden; und zweitens, die soziohistorischen Ursprünge von done in diesem südatlantischen Dialekt darzulegen. Die Komparative Analyse zeigt, dass sich TdCE done hauptsächlich in seinen strukturellen Eigenschaften von anderen Dialekten unterscheidet. Die diachronische Untersuchung zeigt die Komplexität der Darlegung von individuellen Beiträgen verschiedener exportierter Sprachformen, von der Durchmischung von kolonialen Dialekten der englischen Sprache, und von unabhängigen Entwicklungen, die ihren Ursprung in Kreolisierung und Sprachkontakt haben. Lanalyse vise (1) à présenter un examen structurel et sémantique de done comme marqueur complétif, qui vise surtout à éclairer la question suivante: est-ce que done en TdCE a suivi une trajectoire syntaxique et sémantique différente de done dans dautres dialectes anglais? et (2) à expliquer les origines sociohistoriques de done dans cette variété dAnglais sud-atlantique. Lanalyse comparative montre que ce sont surtout les propriétés structurelles de done en TdCE qui le séparent de ce marqueur dans dautres dialectes; lexamen diachronique démontre la difficulté de déterminer précisément les facteurs qui auraient contribué aux particularités de ce marqueur: les contributions des dialectes transplantés, le mélange de variétés coloniales dAnglais, et des développements indépendants remontant á la créolisation ou au contact entre langues.

Resumen

The purpose of the present study is to establish a correlation between gonial angle and freeway space using lateral profile photographs in dentulous individuals. The study includes a total of 150 participants within the age range of 20 – 30 years, of which one twenty-five were females and twenty-five were males. No restrictions were imposed with regard to the presence of malocclusion. The participants were informed about the study through participant information sheet and signed consent was obtained. The study showed a mild negative correlation between Freeway space and gonial angle, indicating that when gonial angle increases freeway space decreases in both class I and class II participants. The study also showed that the freeway space was found to be more in Angle’s class II dentate participantsThe study concludes that there was a statistically significant difference between freeway space between Angle’s Class I and Class II malocclusion. The freeway space in individuals with Angle’s class II malocclusion was greater as compared to that with Angle’s class I malocclusion. The gonial angle was observed to be more acute in participants with Angle’s class II malocclusion as compared to that in participants with Angle’s class 1 malocclusion. Lateral profile photographs can be used as a tool to predict freeway space in patients with Angle’s class I malocclusion.

Resumen

Numerous photographs of live fishes posted by anglers and divers on social media and citizen science databases are important sources of information for ichthyological research. However, validating records that extend the known ecology and bathymetric or geographic distribution of species should rely on a rigorous identification process. The family Gobiidae, with their small size, superficial resemblance among species and high species richness are particularly difficult to identify. Therefore, the identification from photographs of live individuals of Mediterranean marine gobies from the continental shelf was studied. A dichotomous identification key is provided based on photographs of live individuals, allowing positive identification of 41 out of the 66 species reviewed in this publication. Then, for all 66 species we provide a brief description of important characters, which can be used for provisional identification for those species that could not be positively identified using the key. Pending further progress in identification of live individuals, we suggest that records extending the known geographic and ecological species distribution be taken into account only if they could be validated using the dichotomous identification key.

Resumen

Evidence for English settlement in the Tweed Basin from the seventh to ninth centuries is mainly circumstantial, but on the south side of the Tweed, near Sprouston, aerial photography since 1970 has shown a township which can be positively identified as Anglian. The cropmark evidence is transcribed and tentatively subdivided into three broad periods (prehistoric, Romano-British/early historic, Anglian). Each is appraised and the elements identified are qualified by reference to parallels drawn from a limited radius in North Britain. The likely origins and status of the township are discussed; it may have functioned as an urbs regis or royal centre, one of the first to have been founded in the Tweed Basin during the westward English expansion in the late-sixth or early-seventh century.

Resumen

John A. Macdonald, le premier premier ministre du Canada, fut le sujet de plusieurs portraits officiels peints ou photographiés. Dans cet article, nous examinons les représentations satiriques de Macdonald qui le représentent buvant ou ivre. Notre objet principal d’analyse est la gravure sur bois peu connue de l’artiste montréalais John Henry Walker intitulée The Pipe versus the Bottle, qui est apparue dans le journal comique Grinchuckle en 1869. Cette estampe montre Macdonald en train de boire en compagnie du rédacteur et défenseur du mouvement de tempérance John Dougall, ce dernier tenant ce qui semble être une boisson non alcoolique. Nous plaçons Walker dans une longue lignée d’auteurs de satires graphiques, dont James Gillray, qui ont raillé politiciens et monarques au travers d’un discours portant sur l’ivrognerie et, plus généralement, sur l’excès de consommation. À partir d’une étude d’archives au Musée McCord de Montréal, notre analyse montre que Walker fut inspiré par l’artiste satirique anglais George Cruikshank, qui a produit de nombreuses gravures représentant l’ivrognerie. Nous développons le concept du « grim chuckle » (petit rire sombre) afin d’explorer les relations complexes entre satire, rire et consommation d’alcool.

ABSTRACT Background: Various clinical studies performed in adults have shown the relationship between craniofacial morphology and masticatory muscle function. However, the growth of the masticatory muscle has not received such attention, when compared with the volume of studies on the skeletal growth of face. With this background and considering the widespread use of ultrasonography (USG), the following study was undertaken to provide some insights into the relationship between muscle and bone and facial morphology. Methods: This was a prospective, observational study conducted over a period of three years from 2012 to 2015 to assess the correlation between the thickness of the masseter muscle in Angle’s normal occlusion and the various malocclusions of the dental arch as well as the facial form. Patients with a full complement set of teeth, normal tooth morphology, Angle’s normal occlusion, Angle’s class I-III malocclusion, those with a history of third molar extraction, and impaction were included in the study. Those with a history of any prior orthodontic treatment, restorations, or any missing teeth (except the third molar) were exempted from the study. The greater thickness of masseter muscle in relaxed and clenched state was recorded on USG. Facial morphology was determined with the aid of facial photographs. Results: The study was conducted on 140 patients. The class I normal occlusion group had the thickest masseter muscle, while the class III malocclusion group had the thinnest masseter muscle. Facial parameters showed highly significant gender-wise differences in class I normal occlusion, class I malocclusion, and class II division II malocclusion. There was a significant negative co-relation between the thickness of masseter muscle and facial forms in all the categories of Angle’s classification as indicated by a negative regression coefficient B (P < 0.05) Conclusion: The masseter muscle thickness correlated directly with male gender and normal occlusion, and inversely with the degree of malocclusion and facial form.

Abstract Susan Sontag, in a famous essay called “Fascinating Fascism”, first published in 1974, argues that Leni Riefenstahl, who by that time had made a conspicuous come-back as a photographer in the U.S., had always and would always adhere to fascist aesthetics. This essay seeks to demonstrate that as early as 1936, when Riefenstahl began to work on her film Olympia (1938), she had already discarded fascist aesthetics and replaced it by a yearning for what Dreyfus and Kelly, in their important 2011 study, All Things Shining, would call the secular transcendence attaching to sports events that involve top athletes. Since Riefenstahl wanted, and actually managed, to capture such moments of secular transcendence during the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin through her technical perfection as a film director, she had already implicitly begun to enter on a career which - if we allow for David Foster Wallace’s belief that top athletes fascinate Americans by appealing to their twin obsessions with competitive superiority and hard data - would eventually resemble a typically American career, whereas Sontag’s philosophical attitude remained firmly rooted in European thought until her death in 2004. The careers of these two famous women therefore call for a reconsideration of what we tend to regard as the primary importance of the immediate historico-cultural context of a person’s life.

A dual pressure swirl injector is characterized by two independent concentric chambers which can provide independent rotational levels to a single liquid or two different liquids. This paper compares theoretical, semi-empirical and experimental results concerning the spray cone angles formed by injection of water, ethanol and biodiesel through a dual pressure swirl injector. Data are obtained for injection of the same liquid through the primary and secondary chambers and for injection of ethanol in the primary chamber and biodiesel through the secondary chamber of the injector. Experimental data are obtained using photographic techniques and are analyzed by an image processing software developed in Matlab language.

Background and Objectives: This study was designed to determine the relationship between the parameters: buccal corridor, buccal corridor linear ratio (BCLR), upper intercanine width, intermolar width, and premolar basal arch width on a posed smile in adolescents and adults. The buccal corridor affects smile esthetics; hence, it is important to see its correlation with intercanine width. In addition, the study aimed to determine if the buccal corridor changes adversely in Class I and Class II Division 1 malocclusion patients and during growth. Materials and Methods: Posed smile and standard full-front face photographs of 150 patients were taken. Group A consisted of 50 adolescent patients between the ages of 11 and 14 years, divided equally based on malocclusion type. Group B consisted of 100 young adults between the ages of 18 and 25 years, divided equally into Class I and Class II Division 1 malocclusion. The parameters calibrated in the photographs were: upper intercanine distance, intercanthal distance, intercommisure width, difference between intercanthal and intercommisure width, distance between the last visible teeth in the maxilla, and BCLR. Results: The results of this study were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Chi-square tests. The analysis showed a significant correlation between BCLR, intercanine width, distance from the last visible teeth, intercanthal distance, and intercommisure width, and their difference varied significantly among males and females, with P < 0.05. Conclusion: This study concluded that the buccal corridor and intercanine width vary with age and gender. The buccal corridor is usually wider in young adults than in adolescent children.

This study compares the accuracy of computer-aided goniometry with standard goniometry. 109 finger joint angles at the extremes of flexion and extension were measured by a senior hand therapist using standard goniometry. Lateral digital photographs were then taken of the hands and the same angles were read from these by computer. There was good correlation ( r2=0.975) between the results. Computer goniometry averaged 1°(95%Cl=0°–+2°) more than the standard goniometry. We feel that computer goniometry of finger joints is accurate and compares well with standard goniometry.

The angular elements of external orientation characterize the position of a shooting camera relative to the coordinate system in which the spatial coordinates of the points of the object under study are determined from the processing of its images. In many cases of aerial photography, e.g. shooting from an unmanned aerial vehicle, as well as in the case of space survey, the values of the orientation angles could be very significant. This paper presents the results of numerical experiments for five different systems of external orientation angles (Euler angles). The studies were performed using the condition of complanarity, which is the basis of space forward intersection. For a space forward intersection, a model of errors in determining spatial coordinates for five systems of shooting camera orientation angles has been developed. In the numerical experiments, the general case of aerial photography from an unmanned aerial vehicle and of space survey of the Earth were simulated. By comparing the root-mean-square errors (RMSE) in determining the spatial coordinates obtained using the studied systems of external orientation angles, the features of the use of these systems of orientation angles were revealed. The results of the research will allow to determine the spatial coordinates of the points of the studied objects with a greater degree of reliability by photogrammetry methods.

Facial aesthetic surgery requires a thorough preoperative analysis of face and identification of problems to frame a comprehensive surgical plan. The conceptions of an attractive face must be analyzed beforehand. Powell and Humphrey had defined facial angles and had formulated range which would be perceived as attractive. To compare the change in pre- and post-operative nasolabial, nasofrontal and nasofacial angles in patients undergoing Rhinoplasty. A prospective observational study was conducted from October 2014 to October 2019 in ENT department of a tertiary care hospital. Twenty-one patients undergoing Rhinoplasty and fulfilling the inclusion criteria were considered as study population. Their pre- and post-operative profile photographs were taken for morphometric analysis. The nasolabial, nasofrontal and nasofacial angles were measured and compared, before and one month after the surgery in profile pictures. A significant change in the nasolabial and nasofacial angles were seen following Rhinoplasty. The mean nasofrontal angle showed an increase following Rhinoplasty but was not found significant. Rhinoplasty results in significant change in nasofacial and nasolabial angles and in expert hands, is expected to restore the various facial angles to their acceptable range.

INTRODUCTION: Intranasal corticosteroids sprays (INCS) are first line treatment for allergic rhinitis and are frequently used for chronic rhinosinusitis. Improperly aiming INCS increases the risk of epistaxis and may decrease the efficacy of the medication. The goal of this study was to determine how patients position INCS for drug delivery and if verbal or written instructions improve their positioning. METHODS: Patients in rhinology clinics were photographed while administering a generic spray bottle. The angle of the spray bot- tle relative to the patients’ head and a fixed background was determined. RESULTS: A total of 46 participants were included. The average spray angle for the right naris was 10.1o towards the septum and 67.2o below the Frankfurt Horizontal plane. The average spray angle for the left naris was 4.5o towards the septum and 62.2o below the Frankfurt horizontal plane. The angle of the spray bottle ranged from 50o toward the septum to 43o away from the sep- tum. Only 8 patients aimed away from the septum for both nares. Patients who recalled receiving verbal and written instructions aimed the INCS bottle at the lateral wall and inferior turbinate in contrast to patients who only received one form of instruction or no instructions. CONCLUSIONS: Most patients (83%) incorrectly aim INCS when compared to current guidelines. There was statistically significant improvement in the positioning of patients who reported receiving both verbal and written instruction; however, this study high- lights a greater need for patient education.

Or, alternatively, the waters were alive with big, succulent walleye (the State Fish), seemingly bent upon leaping directly into the creels of out-of state anglers. The theme of the novel is mainly the existing pressing problems of India especially the rural India before and after the Independence. Realism is one of the most remarkable features of Bhabani Bhattacharya’s fiction. His novel shows a passionate awareness of life in India, the social awakening and protest, the utter poverty of peasants, the Indian freedom struggle and its various dimensions, the tragedy of partition of the country, the social and political transitions, the mental as well as the physical agony of the poor peasants and labor class people of the Indian society, especially that of Bengal and other adjoining states. Bhattacharya believes that an artist should inevitably be concerned with truth and reality, his portrayal of the life and society is never a photographic one nor a journalistic record. One can very well find the reflection of Indian culture, tradition and struggle in it.

After the description of Gobius incognitus Kovačić & Šanda, 2016, all previous knowledge about the geographic distribution of Gobius bucchichi Steindachner, 1870, as well as its ecology and biology, became obsolete, since it represented the data from the mixture of two species. The known geographic distribution of G. bucchichi and G. incognitus is revisited by validating previously published records, but also and foremost by integrating many new photographic records posted by anglers and divers on social media and on citizen science databases. The present research uses only positively identified records with exact data on locality, coordinates and date of collecting. A total of 1024 confirmed records were collected and retained for inferring distribution maps: 805 records of G. incognitus and 219 records of G. bucchichi. Gobius incognitus is a widespread Mediterranean Sea species with limited presence in the Lusitanian province of the Eastern Atlantic Ocean. It is absent from the Sea of Marmara and the Black Sea. Gobius bucchichi is recorded only in the eastern half of the Mediterranean Sea, from the Adriatic to the Aegean Sea, and in the Black Sea and Sea of Marmara.

This study aimed to evaluate and compare the dentoalveolar effects of the myofunctional trainer T4KTM versus twin block in children with class II division I malocclusion. Two parallel arm randomized comparative clinical trial was conducted, including twenty healthy children, 9–12 years old, showing Angle’s class II division I malocclusion due to mandibular retrusion. Children were randomly assigned into two groups according to the appliance used; Group 1: T4k, and Group II: twin block. Follow-up was done every 4 weeks for 9 months. Postoperative cephalometric X ray, study casts and photographs were taken for measurements and comparison. T4K showed a statistically significant reduction in the overjet (−2.50 ± 1.00 mm) (p < 0.0001), and a significant increase in the lower arch perimeter (LAP) (1.19 ± 0.96 mm) (p = 0.01). The twin block showed a statistically significant reduction in the overjet (−3.75 ± 1.10 mm) (p < 0.0001), a significant reduction in the overbite (−16.22 ± 17.02 %) (p = 0.03), and a significant increase in the LAP (1.69 ± 0.70 mm) (p < 0.0001). The overjet showed a higher significant decrease in the twin block group than in T4K (p = 0.03). The mean values of the overbite were significantly decreased in twin block than in T4k (p < 0.0001). Both groups showed significant dentoalveolar improvements toward class I occlusion; however, the twin block showed significantly better results than T4K appliance.

The objective of this work was to determine the prevalence of individual traits of malocclusion in a sample of three Brazilian regions orthodontic patients and to detect interregional population differences in the prevalence of certain occlusal characteristics. The present study was based on the examination of dental casts, intraoral photographs and panoramic radiographs of 947 orthodontic patients from 3 cities: 363 from Fortaleza (CE), 270 from Maringá (PR) and 314 from Bauru (SP), respectively, representing the Northeast, South and Southeast Brazilian regions. The relationship of the first maxillary and mandibular molars according to Angle’s classification, overjet, overbite, crowding, posterior crossbite and maxillary median diastema were examined. The chi-square and ANOVA tests were used to determine potential differences in the distribution of malocclusion when stratified Brazilian regions. Class I malocclusion was found in 499 (52.69%), Class II in 395 (41.71%) and Class III malocclusion in 53 (5,59%) subjects of all examined. Deep overbite (3.59%), midline diastemas (5.17%) and posterior crossbite (4.75%) were observed more frequently in Bauru; however, in Maringá, normal overbite (13.3%) and open bite (4.75%) were more prevalent. The results of this study showed that Class I malocclusion was the most prevalent, followed by Class II and Class III malocclusions. These occlusal relationships evaluated in the three Brazilian regions follow the same pattern of frequency as the result presented by the general population of the sample.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the cephalometric and intraoral characteristics between Long Face pattern and Pattern I patients, besides evaluating associations between subjective facial patterns, cephalometric facial patterns and the intraoral characteristics. METHODS: Through evaluation of frontal and right side extraoral photographs, three previously calibrated and experienced examiners selected 30 Long Face patients (Group 1) and 30 Pattern I patients (Group 2), aged between 9 and 19 years, of both genders. The cephalometric characteristics were assessed by the following variables: SN.GoGn, NS.Gn, AIFH, SNA, SNB, ANB, 1.1, 1.NA,1-NA, 1.NB, 1-NB, NA.Po, nasolabial angle and H-Nose. Clinical evaluations were also performed to determine the presence of posterior crossbite, anterior open bite and type of Angle's malocclusion. The cephalometric data were compared by independent t test. The chi-square test was used to evaluate the association between qualitative variables. RESULTS: Significant differences were observed between groups regarding the variables SN.GoGn, NS.Gn, AIFH, ANB, NA.Pog, 1-NA, 1.NB and 1-NB, with an increase of these measures in Group 1. There were also significant differences between groups on variable 1.1, being lower in Group 1 than in Group 2. CONCLUSIONS: The Long Face was associated to Angle Class II malocclusion, to the presence of posterior crossbite and to anterior open bite. The Long Face subjective facial pattern was associated to dolichofacial cephalometric pattern.

Introduction: Angle in 1899 propounded the classification to recognize the malocclusion patterns. Class II Division 1 is a malalignment which can be identified by the parameters mentioned.Objective: To assess the knowledge of dental undergraduate students about Class II Division 1 malocclusion and their opinion about the treatment or clinical approach to such patients. Materials & Method: The study was performed using closed questionnaire on 138 fourth and final year undergraduate dental students of College of Dental Sciences, Bharatpur, Nepal. Dental casts and photographs of a patient with Class II Division 1 were shown to the respondents to depict deviated midline, midline diastema, molar relation, increased overjet and overbite.Result: Dental students found it easy to identify increased overjet (91.99%), increased overbite (88.78%), presence of diastema (84.69%) and midline deviation (77.28%). However, 52% students could not identify the molar relationship. When asked about the appropriate timing for treatment; 48.8% thought it should be in deciduous dentition period, 41.6% in mixed dentition, and 9.6% in permanent dentition.Conclusion: Fourth and final year BDS students possess fair knowledge on common parameters used to determine Class II Division 1 malocclusion but they find difficulties in compiling and applying this knowledge to orthodontic treatment concept.

It is important to understand the effects of hoof trimming on hoof and limb conformation to maximize its benefits on the health of the appendicular skeleton of horses, thus promoting improvements in athletic performance and sporting longevity with regard to athletic horses. There is little information on possible changes in the angulation of the thoracic limb joints after hoof trimming and correlations between the angulation of the thoracic limb joints with hoof measurements. To that purpose, nineteen Mangalarga mares received routine hoof trimming. Visual recordings (photographs) were taken before and after the procedure. Differences (p < 0.05) were found in hoof length, toe angle, heel angle, medial heel height, and metacarpophalangeal angle. Before trimming, correlations were found between frog length and scapulohumeral angle (SH) (r = −0.457; p = 0.049), and between toe length and shoulder-ground angle (SG) (r = −0.553; p = 0.049). A correlation was also seen between the distance from the frog to the lateral wall and the SH angle (r = 0.690; p = 0.001). After trimming, there was a correlation between humeroradial (HR) and SH joint angles (r = 0.669; p = 0.002), and the SG and SH angles (r = 0.488; p = 0.034). This study showed an immediate effect of trimming on the toe angle and heel angle and on the metacarpophalangeal joint angle, in addition to correlations between the hoof and proximal joint angles, following trimming, thus evidencing the relevance of trimming not only in hoof morphology, but also in the conformation of the appendicular skeleton of horses.

The goal of this study was to determine whether it was possible to identify the underlying skeletal Class using a lateral (profile) photograph, as well as which reference points of the angle of convexity are most useful for doing so. Retrospective evaluation of 60 Orthodontic patients baseline profile photos and lateral cephalograms was performed. Based on the Wits values determined by radiographic analysis, the subjects were assigned to skeletal Classes. The Class I subjects were 20 patients (05 males, 15 females) with an average age of 13.3 ±1.42 years, the Class II subjects 20 patients (9 males, 11 females) with an average age of 13.85 ± 1.27 years, and the Class III subjects 20 patients (10 males, 10 females) with an average age of 13.60 ± 1.23 years. A'OrB '(=POrA '-POrA'), A'N'B ', and the angle of convexity with its variants (N'SnPog ', N'A'Pog', TrSnPog', TrA'Pog, Gl'SnPog', and Gl'A'Pog ') were measured. Highly Significant differences between Class II and Class III subjects were seen for all angles (P 0.001). Nearly all angles showed highly significant differences between Classes I and III (P 0.001), and A'N'B' showed significant differences (P 0.05). Only some angles showed significant (P > 0.05) differences between Class I and Class II. It was simpler to distinguish between skeletal Classes I and III than between Classes I and II. The lack of distinction between Division I and Division II subclasses within the Class II subjects could be one of the causes.

ABSTRACT Objective: To compare the mixed dentition incisor and molar overjet, severity of contraction of the dental arch, and the sagittal molar relationship on the cleft side vs the noncleft side in children with repaired complete unilateral cleft of the lip and palate (UCLP). Materials and Methods: Orthodontic records taken prior to orthodontic preparation for alveolar bone grafting were screened to select study casts from patients with nonsyndromic repaired complete UCLP who did not have mandibular skeletal or dental asymmetry. The study sample comprised dental casts from 74 children aged 8.9 ± 1 years. Standardized digital photographs were acquired at 1:1 magnification. A coordinate system was developed using digital image-processing software (Photoshop CS4 and Adobe Illustrator). Incisor and molar overjet, Angle's classification, and arch contraction were recorded. Descriptive statistics, paired t-tests, and kappa statistics were used to compare the cleft and noncleft sides. Results: A negative overjet of −1 to −5 mm was often present at the incisors, with greater frequency and magnitude on the cleft side. Class II molar relation was more frequent on the cleft side (61.1%) than on the noncleft side (47.2%). Significantly greater contraction of the cleft side deciduous canine and deciduous first molar was noted, while the difference was very minor at the first permanent molar. Conclusions: Cleft side maxillary arch contraction was most severe in the deciduous canine and first deciduous molar region and progressively less severe in the posterior region of the arch. A greater frequency and severity of negative overjet and Class II molar relationship was seen on the cleft side.

Introduction: Endodontic surgery become essential to save teeth when the endodontic treatments are failed.It promote root canal debridement and insertion of retrograde filling to make sure tight sealing apically.Aim: Compare the influences of two different resection angles (0 and 30 degree bevel angle to the long axisof the tooth) on the apical micro leakage by utilizing dye penetration technique.Methods: 80 single rooted permanent teeth were amputated 3 mm from the apex at two different resectionangles. Retrograde cavities were prepared and filled with Well-ROOT PT® and MTA BIOREP®. Allspecimens were immersed in 2% methylene blue dye for 24 hours. The specimens were cut longitudinallyby microtome and photographed digitally using stereomicroscope. With the use of Kinovea program dyepenetration area was measured. Two WAY Analysis of Variance (Two Way ANOVA) were used to analyzethe result statistically at P<0.05.Results: No group exhibited complete sealing of root-end zones. The group of MTA BIOREP® demonstratedstatistical significant differences with 0 degree angle which showed less leakage.Conclusion: MTA BIOREP® retro filling material with 0 degree angle of resection were significantlysuperior regarding apical microleakage compared with Well-ROOT PT®.

ABSTRACTAn old procedure used to carry out a graphical derivation of curves, which is based on the optical properties of plane mirrors, has been adapted for the measurement of the contact angle (θ) formed between a liquid drop and a flat solid substrate in wettability experiments carried out by the so-called “sessile drop” method. The method was tested for mercury on soda-lime glass at room temperature in air as well as for Cusil (Ag-28wt.%Cu) and Incusil-ABA (Ag-27wt.%Cu-12wt.%In-2wt.%Ti) brazing alloys on pressureless-sintered silicon carbide (PLS-SiC) at 850 °C, under a vacuum of 10-4/10-5 Torr. The proposed method is fast, simple and accurate enough from high (∼140°) to relatively low (∼10°) contact angles. Although the proposed method has been tested for metal-ceramic systems, it is of general application, so that it would be useful for any liquid-solid system. The method is applicable for any temperature, pressure and atmospheric experimental conditions employed, as well as for any chemical composition of liquid and solid. It is also useful for both low and high contact angles, as well as for reactive and non-reactive systems, as long as a photograph of a liquid drop resting on a flat solid surface is available for the studied system.

The parasitoid wasps of the genus Trichogramma use the surface curvature of their insect egg hosts to set an upper limit to the number of progeny allocated to the host, as well as the duration of their host examination. In addition, host recognition and host acceptance are in part mediated by surface curvature. In this paper, the relationships between the positions of body parts of the wasp and surface curvature are examined in order to determine a possible mechanism for curvature detection by the wasp. Wasps of different sizes were photographed in profile while examining glass bead models of different diameters. The positions of selected body parts were analysed using a digitizer and microcomputer. The height of the wasp above the model surface did not change with surface curvature. Furthermore, the angle of the head relative to the thorax was also constant over the range of models used. Only the scapal-head angle and flagellar-head angle changed significantly with surface curvature. A curvature detecting mechanism is proposed in which the wasp uses the scapal-head angle to measure the curvature of the surface. The body of the wasp is maintained at a preferred height and angle to the substrate, serving as a fixed platform from which curvature measurements are made. Additional features of this mechanism, as well as its correlation with morphological and behavioural findings, are discussed.

Background and objectivesWe assume that intrafascicular spread of a solution can only occur if a large enough portion of the distal needle orifice is placed inside the fascicle. Our aim is to present and evaluate a mathematical model that can calculate the theoretical vulnerability of fascicles, analyzing the degree of occupancy of the needle orifice in fascicular tissue by performing simulations of multiple positions that a needle orifice can take inside a cross-sectional nerve area.MethodsWe superimposed microscopic images of two routinely used nerve block needles (22-gauge, 15° needle and 22-gauge, 30° needle) over the microscopic images of cross-sections of four nerve types photographed at the same magnification. Fascicular tissue that was overlapped between 80% and 100% by a needle orifice was considered at risk to possible intrafascicular injection. The effect of three angular approaches was evaluated.ResultsThere were statistical differences between the vulnerability of fascicular tissue depending on nerve type, the bevel angle of the needle and the angle approach. Fascicular vulnerability was greater in nerve roots of the brachial plexus after using a 22-gauge 30° needle, as was choosing a 45° angle approach to the longitudinal axis of the nerve.ConclusionsOur results suggest that clinicians may want to consider needle insertion angle and bevel type as they perform peripheral nerve blocks. Furthermore, researchers may want to consider this mathematical model when estimating vulnerabilities of various nerves, needle types and angles of approach of needles to nerves.
