Texto completoBorn in Tūlā (Lebanon), the Maronite clergyman Buṭrus al-Tūlāwī (1657-1746) was a pupil at the Maronite College of Rome, where he followed the whole scholastic curriculum taught by Jesuit fathers. After his return to the East, he left for Aleppo to serve his Church and there he composed an important series of philosophical and theological works. To be sure, he is well known among historians for his role in the history of the Maronite Church and for the place his writings occupied in the religious and intellectual spheres in the Near-East. Nevertheless, his philosophical works have not been the object of much research so far and were never critically edited. In this dissertation, we offer a critical edition accompanied by a commented French translation of the two first examinations (baḥṯ-s) of the Book of Logic (al-Manṭiq), taught in 1693 onward. That part is preceded by a detailed inventory of the 153 witnesses of al-Tūlāwī’s philosophical texts, Logic included, the results of which constitute the starting point for a reflection on the circulation of this corpus. In the following chapter, we proceed to the stemmatic analysis of the 24 witnesses of the Logic to which we could have access out of the 29 listed, in order to underline the existence of three distinct versions in which this text circulated, and which are of paramount importance for the principles of our edition, which is synoptic, and for the eliminatio codicum. The doctrinal references used by al-Tūlāwī in his treatises are varied and numerous. We present and reference, in the following chapter, all the quotations which are, in the Logic, taken from two major figures of philosophy: John Damascene and Avicenna

Texto completoThe complexity of the writer-adventurer – André Malraux, all his biographers have one thing in common : they have repeatedly emphasized his genius and talent. The difficulty of identifying the multifaceted man has made him a living legend. Asian students might notice this fascination that Malraux felt for the oriental continent, arts, cultures, religions, civilization etc. Malraux deeply felt in love with eastern millennia culture, mystery, he had been deeply touched and was in searching of more oriental lighting... As a great connoisseur of Asian sacred texts, Malraux posseced that power, fame, luxury that surrounded him. His main biographers ( Lacouture, Todd, Picon, Brincourt etc... ) have noted the hesitations of Malraux between the dress of the wise and tenacious worldliness. In the final wisdom seems to have prevailed in the old man of Verrières-le-Buisson

Texto completoZhang xuecheng (1738-1801), chinese historian, philosopher, bibliographer and expert in fangzhi (local gazetteers). Since 1920, numerous works in different languages - chinese, japanese, english, french, etc. Have been devoted to him. In my opinion, it is worthy to undertake some researches of these works and to analyse the his- torical background against which these works were produced. Such a thought constituted the main reason for which i wrote the present thesis. This thesis consists of five parts. Each one of these parts - studies on the works relative to the life of zhang xuecheng, to his philosophy, to his historiographical and literary ideas as well as to his works - is composed of two chapters. The first chapter gives a general chronological survey of the evolution of all the researches which bear relation to the theme of the part concerned; the second chapter studies in a analytical and critical manner each one of these researches. The conclusion (seventy-two pages) which constitutes the syn- thesis of the previous parts is made up of two parts. The first one, under the form of statistics and tables, aims at bringing to light, with reference to the historical background, the evolution of all the studies relative to the author. The second one is devoted to the following subjects : - the reasons which incite at present the numerous researches on zhang xuecheng, - general criticism of the works devoted to him, questions worthy to be furthered. The thesis ends with four appendices, the first one of which takes into account the writings drawn from the works published before 1920, and two index

Texto completoSince 9/11, many local police agencies have been chipping away at important community policing programs in order to meet new homeland security responsibilities. With this in mind, the current study set out to answer the question: Do newly acquired homeland security responsibilities require police agencies to reduce or eliminate community policing programs, or can homeland security mandates be effectively integrated into an agency’s already established community policing philosophy? In order to answer this question, the study looked at 720 municipal law enforcement agencies from all 50 states that responded to a variety of community policing and homeland security questions in both 2000 and 2007 Bureau of Justice Statistics Law Enforcement Management and Administrative Statistics surveys. These agencies incorporate most major U.S. police departments as well as a representative sample of smaller agencies. The study provides strong evidence that since 9/11, police agencies have significantly reduced the attention given to community policing, while at the same time substantially increasing their focus on homeland security. The study also strongly suggests that police agencies that instead integrate community policing and homeland security not only excel in counterterrorism preparedness, but they also enjoy lower crime rates. This supports the idea that community-oriented counterterrorism is a viable policing strategy and should be implemented as a preferred organizational practice.

Texto completoOriental thought puts man in the centre of the learning process since about 26 century. Theorie of involvement is here looked upon like a bridge in beetween occident and "others" cultures. It is first puted into action in the wandering diary opening the thesis ; larges extracts will be found all along the work. The central part consider the verdict found by hegel against oriental philosophy. Under the form of a trial unstituted against hegel for interfering with people freedom, dialectic is confronted with oriental ternary wich inspired the philosoph quite a lote. The principle of partaken is then investigated in hopi culture, under the light of recent discovery in astrophysique. The last part puts the theorie of involvement in relation with self-knowledge process as practiced in orient. Beyond the dispute on the contradiction beetween two logics, this thesis suggests an epistemological openning of the learning for others cultures knowledge and wanders about content of what is teached in scools and university

The answer that the author of this thesis tries to develop constitutes a work which studies the convictions as also the evolution of the personal thought of H. Cazalis- known as the only poet-philosopher of Le Parnasse contemporain review- with the thoughts of some classical Persian poets and the hindu religions and philosophies. H. Cazalis, who has studied well these oriental thoughts, adopted with sagacity the elements which suit perfectly his own one. In fact, the freedom of thought is his main trait of character. The research was fulfilled through an academic study of the historical development & urban growth of Cairo and Marseille. The aim was to identify the major elements forming of the mental image of the two cities. The researcher determined these elements through a historical and analytical study the urbanism and architecture of the two cities, with particular focus on downtown areas. Through a limited field study, conducted on a sample of residents in each city, the hypotheses developed by the researcher were tested to identify the important characteristics of the different mental impressions for both the eastern city (Cairo) and the western city (Marseille). As well as the social and cultural impacts, the researcher also identifies the physical elements of the mental impression the inhabitants have of the study areas

Texto completoThe ingenious progress of the means of likelihood, the required combination of art and the virtual, the interest for archives, the will of reality ect., that characterize our time, have given a particular interest to the question of "why fiction?", both in the philosophical reflections and the poetical investigations. In its two end-points, this question concerns both literary and historiographical discourses. Western thought has traditionally referred to its Greek origins in order to answer the question. Yet most of the time, the answer is formulated in a bipolar, referential framework consisting of the real and the fictional. Instead, in the present work, the issue is to move back up the Greek legacy in search of some art and fiction thought which goes beyond this referential framework. Doing this, we can identify the elements of a different reading of Greek thought which is actually involved in the very starting point of the poetics developed within the Islamico-Iranian cultural world : an oriental poetics which is to be considered another becoming of Greek poetics. Through theoretical, literary and historiographical discourses in Post-Islamic Iran, the author tries to show this oriental poetics requires thinking fiction now in a tripartite schema : the relationship between the real and the fictional takes necessarily into account a third pole that one can call the truth or the real of reality. From a comparative perspective, the tripartite schema could help to think the general issue of fiction in a different way

Texto completoIn order to temperate the equivocity of the greek word " sophia ", which designates the plain cleverness of the riddle-decipherer so as the universal knowledge based on the highest reality, we suggerate to read again the grounding texts of philosophy according to a new method: the indo-european comparatism. This method has already shown his systematizing power in grammar and mythology. India, because having elevated, on his own side, the true speech to the rank of spiritual excellency, has got a priviledged place in this comparison. For example, the famous Plato's “theory of ideas”, true center of the greek wisdom, appears now deductible from the very old contrast between the language of god's and the language of men, contrast wich has been instituated notably by the vedic poets and which is present in most of indo-european cultures. So the rivality between the sophists, as champions of speech, and the platonic quest of the essence of each thing, is softening. And the trace of common filiation of these two antagonist interpretations of wisdom lies in the fact that both swear allegiance to the Eleusinian mysteries of immortality, each pretending to be their one legitimate heir. These rites, that are supposed to bring a man to his own perfection along an inner path, are the most probable relay from which Plato has got the bases of his ontology opposing the default of the sensible and the perfection of the intelligible: this ontology is quite near of the Veda mode of being, and the Veda describes a lot of rituals or myths which analogous mysteries

Texto completoThe late 20th century saw the emergence of China as an economic power, but the french-speaking world knows the cultural influence of China for much longer. Since the 80s, many Chinese writers have published in France novels written directly in French that have met a great success. Some of them as Dai Sijie, Ya Ding, Wei-Wei, Chen Ying Shan Sa were born in China, where they have lived all their childhood, their adolescence and sometimes the first part of their adult lives. They managed to break into the french literature through the delicately exotic perfume that was exhaled from their novels. Responsible for Chinese traditional and historical baggage, their works converge on topics such as the collective memory of China's turbulent twentieth century, the contact or the collision of Chinese and Western cultures, the emphasis of Taoist thought, Buddhist and Confucianist, etc. With these original voices, the French language was open to new poetic and showed his ability to tell the complex reality of today's world. Based on this we will develop in this thesis three major research areas, each of which will raise their various problems : What is the position of these chinese migrants writers in a western literary context? What is the impact of the postmodern movement on their writing? What are the aesthetic techniques chosen by these writers to adapt to the mixed cultural situation? What is the influence of asian religions (Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism) on chinese migrant writers? Through what channels the spirit of chinese writers is steeped in oriental thoughts? How these writers stand in relation to the ancestral heritage? What role the chinese thoughts play in their literary creation? The quest for the identity of migrant writers. Is there a common route for migrants writers of chinese origin? Where are they in the process of identity reconstruction? What are their literary approaches to a quest for identity? In conclusion we will see how some of the authors of the corpus we studied remained anchored to their origins as part of their literary, and on the contrary how some others knew and even made a point to put the largest possible distance between their origins and literary work. Also some others are on the edge of these two concepts and have a less clear positioning, sometimes even a cyclical one

It also reveals his profound integrity, the indivisible feature of Gobineau's life and its eminently fictional dimension

Texto completoThe aim of this thesis is to follow the path of oriental poetry, and to compare this with the movement of the main ideas of french symbolism. It is particularly interesting to bring together the principles of french symbolism and the most subtle nuances of emotions, vital sensations and impressions of the soul in oriental poetry, the evocative value and signifying power of whose words we throw into light. To this end, we recall some symbolist ideas and we explain the reasons for our preference for symbolist literature and oriental poetry. We attempt to highlight the driving forces of peotic creation in its long itinerary and focus our attention on the revealing universe upon which artists tend to project a retrospective vision, conscience and sensibility in order to convey to us their perception of the reality of things and of life. Ours is a creative effort and initiative which discloses in the language of tao and of zen, a spiritual substance centred on nature. Nature, for the poet, symbolizes and reflects the tao

Texto completoThe research presented in this thesis is based on the analysis of the line, in a physical as well as a spiritual sense. A drawn line is like a continuous movement: when I paint a line my point of reference is always the persistent movement of the universe. The desire to express the mysterious force of nature is therefore omnipresent in all my works. The lines I paint are the trace of the movement: they are the imprints that reflect the inner vital energy. the fluidity of thought and the rhythm of my bodily gesture. Whether it is from abstract painting to drawing or from the line to the image of flow the goal of my artistic approach is the same: ta catch sight of the vitality and fluidity in nature. to capture the imperceptible movement and the perpetual force in the dynamic evolution of the universe. Thanks to my Oriental tradition (Taïwanese origin) enriched by my encounter with the West, I propose a personal way of tracing the line. or, to be more exact. of painting the movement and the rhythmical aspect of nature. Unfolding the questioning concerning the line creation, life. The research in this thesis follows a process that consists in going beyond appearances to penetrate to the core of who one is and see the emergence of a new horizon

Texto completoThis study aims to examine the relationship between Orient and Occident in Michel Tournier's novel The Golden Droplet. Through an initiatory journey to the West carried out by a young North African shepherd, the author sheds light on the image that each of these two worlds has of the other while showing how this representation influences communication and dialogue between them. The content and the form of the novel focus on the possibility of a beneficial cultural exchange between Orient and Occident, in spite of the differences separating them and the conflicts opposing them. Our research will first examine how the relationship between identity and otherness is perceived in the novel through the analysis of the hero's identity crisis and its impact on his relationship with the Western other in the immigration context. Then we will review what the author calls "civilization of the image" and "civilization of the sign". We will analyze the different forms in which are presented the image and the sign in the novel and why monotheistic religions sanctify or prohibit figurative representations, analysis which will allow us to degage Tournier's conception of each of these two separate entities, the image and the sign, and grasp the ambivalent nature of the relationship of one to the other. Finally, we will study the influence of the Arab East on Michel Tournier who married in his Golden Droplet elements from the Arab-Islamic tradition to others belonging to Western literature and mythology through a structure inspired by the Arabian Nights

The first part studies the reactions of the author in front of India's reality, the cultural shock caused by impression of excess, disproportion and irreality. The second part is dedicated to the fantasmatic female world associated by the author to the East. The third part studies the relation to buddhism, the themes of illusion of the ego, negation and negation of negation, the subject of signification of signification, of sense and absence of sense, emptiness and the celebration of erotic buddhist sculptures. The forth part is dedicated to the study of the meeting of "the obsession" of union of opposites and the oriental equivalence in the thought of rhythmic alternation of yin yang, in the thought of "this and that", of identity of opposites in the YI king ant tantrism. The seventh part is dedicated to the presence of Islam in Paz's work, in the arabo-Moslem form and the indian one. The last one studies the relations between Paz and japanese culture. The conclusion shows the important correlation between elements of Paz's imaginary and elements of Eastern thought

Texto completoChinese Philosophy is little known in France and is not officially recognized by twenty-first century French philosophers. They do not consider Chinese philosophy as a philosophy but regard its contributions as wisdoms, thoughts or spiritualities. My study attempts to understand this fact by identifying the emergence of such representation across several centuries and starts with its reception in France through Jesuit missionaries in the sixteenth century. This thesis argues that French philosophers’ representation of Chinese philosophy is an Orientalist legacy that French philosophers and scholars have built from a distorted, biased and reductionist view of China and its philosophy as formulated by the Jesuits. This problem of the existence of Chinese philosophy can only be understood if it is approached in relation to the eurocentric and Orientalist ideology that characterizes philosophy and addressed through the intellectual coloniality that dominates traditional epistemology by deconstructing it

In its diverse guises, this question is the cornerstone of specific practices of the self within these traditions. As such, its main function is to guide the idea of self, with regard to the polarity self ↔ non-self, in order to achieve the status of the sage, which represents a kind of harmony with an original nature that is common to all individuals. Therefore, rather than simply designating an ontological foundation – real or alleged – the idea of self has the role of a vector, which, depending on its orientation, allows one to actualise (or not) this harmony. Through comparative analysis of the role of negation (detachment) of the self, this study seeks to broaden the spectrum of the processes of subjectification or practices of the self and, thus, to bring to light an aspect that has been somewhat neglected by the Western history of subjectivity. In doing so, this thesis enables better understanding of how the full-bodied (meta)physics of the Stoics is able to think the negation (detachment) of the self and, conversely, of how the Buddhist metaphysics of emptiness can develop an idea of moral subjectivity and responsibility
