Addiction is a complex issue influenced by neurobiological, emotional, and relational factors that contribute to the persistence of addictive behaviors and limit access to psychotherapy. The objective of this thesis is to examine the influence of compassion and psychological flexibility as protective factors that promote the maintenance of abstinence. The thesis is structured into three parts: a theoretical section that presents a multidimensional approach to addiction and details the various psychotherapies developed to support recovery processes; an experimental section comprising three studies; and a third part dedicated to the general discussion and synthesis of the research findings. The first study focuses on the development and evaluation of the MY ACT Addiction therapeutic program, specifically designed to support the maintenance of abstinence in patients with polyaddictions and psychiatric comorbidities. This program integrates the principles of compassion-focused therapy with behavioral therapies (CBT, ACT). A multiple case series protocol was employed to assess the program's feasibility, acceptability, and clinical impact through qualitative and quantitative measures. Results reveal a high level of acceptability for the program, along with significant clinical improvements in craving, depression, anxiety, psychological flexibility, and components of self-compassion. These findings suggest that compassion-based psychological interventions may serve as a transdiagnostic protective factor promoting the maintenance of abstinence in individuals with polyaddictions. The second study examines the relationships between addiction, mental health, and attachment styles, as well as the role of psychological flexibility and self-compassion. Results indicate that individuals suffering from addiction have experienced more traumatic events and exhibit higher levels of depression and anxiety, alongside a negative perception of their close relationships. Psychological flexibility emerges as a central mediating factor in these interrelations, underscoring the importance of integrating therapeutic approaches centered on psychological flexibility, interpersonal relationships, and compassion in addiction treatment. Finally, the third study explores fears of compassion, perceived as barriers to establishing secure relationships and accessing psychotherapeutic care. The study validates the French version of the "Fears of Compassion Scale" and proposes a short version while examining its correlations with other relevant concepts. Results confirm the psychometric robustness of this short version in Francophone clinical contexts and its utility for clinical and research assessments in French. These findings open new avenues for understanding the impact of fears of compassion on mental health and their influences on addictive behaviors. In conclusion, this thesis highlights the protective role of psychological flexibility and compassion in maintaining abstinence, as well as the relevance of integrative and process-oriented approaches. The results have led to scientific publications, including one in a peer-reviewed journal (Annales Médicopsychologiques), an article submitted to Personality and Individual Differences, another article currently under submission, and a widely disseminated article (Santé Mentale), as well as presentations at national and international conferences (Congrès de l'Encéphale, Annual Congress of the AFTCC, French Congress of Psychiatry, Annual Congress of the International Society of Addiction Medicine)

Reconsidering event media pictures trough the prism of collective fears allows raising differently the political and social issues. The evolution of the news media with Internet as well as the frequent public debates on the news pictures reveal a new apprehension of event pictures. The ambiguous relation of belief and doubt inherent to any picture reinforce the virality of today's media images. Photographs and videos of terrorist attacks, disasters and various crises spread and redefine fears, bringing out the fear of pictures. Powers of media and pictures combine together creating a climate of anxiety which oscillates between reality and fiction. This fine arts doctoral research questions the practices and the positioning of artists who problematize these relationships between images, fears and events. The experience of the mediatised event, re-proposed and re-made by these artists, is built in the relationship between excess and lack of visibility (which pictures to diffuse or not) and can exorcise or amplify collective fears, like a call for vigilance. Articulating theoretical investigation and personal practice - which is based on the collection of media pictures - allows demonstrating the negative and positive aspects of the uses of pictures and fears today, simultaneously remedies and poisons of a worried society

Resumen
Stigma is an individual’s devalued identity or other characteristic that may lead to stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination. Decades of literature show that experiencing stigma has negative effects on mental health outcomes. However, some research suggests that the experience of stigma leads individuals to cope with adversity in a meaningful way. Understanding how people benefit from adversity will help promote less distress for people who experience different types (visible or covert) of stigma. Three central questions were addressed. First, is level of distress different based on experience with stigma? Second, does having self-compassion buffer individuals with stigma, in that people with more self-compassion would have less distress than those with less self-compassion? Third, does more stigma experiences lead to more compassion toward others and contribute to lower levels of distress? To explore these questions, participants (N = 416) at a southeastern university completed on-line surveys to assess experience with stigma, compassion, and distress. Separate hierarchical multiple regression analyses were used to examine whether (1) quantity of stigma, (2) directness of stigma, (3) level of visibility of stigma were related to distress. The direct experience of stigma and the lack of visibility of the stigmatizing characteristic significantly predicted higher levels of distress (b = .09, p < .01; b = .09, p < .01; respectively). In order to examine self-compassion as a moderator of the effect of stigma on distress, we conducted moderated regression analysis, with distress as the dependent variable, the centered stigma and self-compassion variables, as well as, the interaction between stigma and self-compassion, as predictors. This hypothesis was not supported. In order to address central question three, indirect effects were tested using bootstrapping (an SPSS script; Preacher and Hayes). Indirect experiences of stigma predicted compassion for others (b = .04, p < .05) which predicted less distress (b = -.32, p < .01). Given these results a follow-up study was conducted to further investigate these relationships. In a follow-up study of participants experiencing either a covert or invisible stigmatizing characteristic, self-compassion is induced by encouraging the participant to help another with the same stigmatizing characteristic. Preliminary results of the inductions effects on compassion for others, self-compassion, and distress will be presented.

When disasters and catastrophes are prominent features of social and collective life, our aesthetic and cognitive vision or conception of the world is challenged or even overwhelmed. The contemporary world is experiencing a crisis that has shaken our certainties about nature and society’s control. This crisis is paradoxical, because it is rooted in our immense powers of transformation; the very same powers that sustain our hopes of progress. The unexpected consequences of these powers now feed our collective anxieties and fears. This research takes a sociological perspective to assess the influence of the social imaginary on the production of disaster events, and, in turn, the impact of the production of disaster events on the opinions, attitudes and risk-prevention behaviors and social representations of security. Based on a corpus of ten catastrophes (the December 1999 storm in Western Europe to the Fukushima disaster in 2011), and supported by field work (press, literature, cinema, video games and also disaster preparedness groups), this work reveals the effectiveness of the Durandian archetype and reveals reactivation of ancient myths and the emergence of new tales in the social complex, while introducing a new idea in the Occident: our age is fascinated by its power, but also terrified of a future in which it can see only promises of decline

In a world where insecurities, violence and disasters seem to be increasing on a daily basis, compassion, a moral sentiment of co-suffering and motivation to alleviate it, plays an important role, especially in humanitarian action. However, compassion is not a constant feeling, and our emotions and compassion towards tragedies do not always resonate with egalitarian principles. This thesis seeks to explore the potential relationship between field experience, in humanitarian action, and compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue. Departing from two contrasting hypotheses, grounded in theories of compassion, it investigates the factors, relating to field experience, that affect this moral sentiment, in a single case study of the Network on Humanitarian Action (NOHA). Through a quantitative survey design, combined with semi-structured interviews, the study finds that there exists no isolated correlation between field experience and compassion fatigue or satisfaction. However, the study concludes that compassion is affected by several intervening variables, relating to field experience, which can result in either compassion fatigue or satisfaction, resonating with both hypotheses.

Background: There´s a high speed in the emergency care and the expectation of the nurse seems to be versatile with quick assessment, confront the patients suffering and to prioritize the most acute patient in a stressful work environment. Untenable work environment with suffering patients and a high work speed for the nurse can developed compassion fatigue which means a lost of the ability to feel empathy.  Purpose: To illustrate factors that causes compassion fatigue for nurses in emergency care.  Method: A literature review consisting of 11 scientific articles with quantitative research. The search of the articles was performed in the databases CINAHL, MEDLINE, PubMed and WorldCat Discovery.  Result: Three head themes was seen with analysis which was demographic factors, work relatable and psychosocial factors. Demographic factors which could cause compassion fatigue was age, gender and civil state. Work relatable factors was work environment which consisted less social support from managers and colleges, high workload, less team spirit and work relatable factors which consisted level of education, work experience and working hours. The psychosocial factors that was observed was stressors, patients suffering and trauma. Conclusion: Compassion fatigue needs to been seen and prioritize by individuals, colleges and managers in the healthcare. It was discovered that focus should be to create compassion satisfaction which prevent the appearance of compassion fatigue, which is relevant to embrace in staff development.

Barnes, Donna. "Constrained compassion : an ethnography exploring compassion in the hospital ward setting". Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2018. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/50314/.

Resumen
Ethnography; Compassion; Compassionate care; Nursing A series of healthcare scandals over the last 15 years in the United Kingdom (UK) National Health Service (NHS) generated a vigorous public and professional debate. Within this debate, care failures were framed as a ‘lack of compassion’ and, specifically, a lack of compassion in contemporary nursing. The healthcare policy response was to rapidly implement a values-based strategy that aimed to ‘embed the principles of compassion and caring’ (DoH, 2014) in healthcare staff. The strategy progressed, despite evidence suggesting that healthcare professionals valued compassionate care (Maben et al., 2007b, Newton et al., 2009, Glazer and Beehr, 2002). Significant changes were made to nursing recruitment, regulation and education, with the explicit intention of prioritising compassion. The research response to the NHS care standards debate has also focused predominantly on the values of NHS staff, and has inadequately represented the contextual contingencies of practice. This study aimed to develop an empirically informed descriptive and explanatory understanding of compassion in a healthcare setting. The objectives were to examine the key elements of the phenomenon and how participants constructed and enacted compassion. The study was a constructionist ethnographic design set in one NHS hospital ward. Participants included various staff groups, patients and relatives. Fieldwork lasted one year and included over 150 hours of participant observation, 70 informal interviews and 30 recorded interviews. Analysis involved thick description of ward life, and thematic, key-event and deviant-case analysis. Theories of compassion, psychological research and a sociological perspective were employed as analytic lenses. Themes included contextualised compassion, compromised compassion, receiving compassion, and the role of threat and safety. I found compassion in the ward setting was constrained by a tangle of micro- and macro-level contingencies which shape the experience of giving, and receiving, compassionate care. The contingencies of the clinical context were frustrating to staff and patients and led to an inconsistent quality of care. All actors contributed to the dynamics of compassion on the ward. I found that staff valued compassion as an aspect of their care, and for some it was part of their identity and gave meaning to their work. Patients also valued compassionate care, felt comforted by it, and responded positively, which in turn was uplifting for staff. Unexpectedly, some patients struggled to recognise, trust or feel relieved from compassionate care. I found that a sense of threat dominated the ward culture, which was evident in the language and practices of staff, and could inhibit their capacity to engage compassionately with others. However, when the organisation provided positive practical support, compassionate care often flourished. This study contributes the notion of ‘constrained compassion’ as a descriptive and explanatory framework for understanding the phenomenon in the ward setting, and evidences that threat and safety, compromise and cost are inherent in its enactment. It demonstrates that theoretically-informed compassion research can be beneficial, and highlights the value of cross-disciplinary approaches to compassion scholarship. The study also demonstrates the strengths and limitations of process- and values-based theories of compassion and argues that conceptualising compassion as a context-dependent process can broaden the possibilities of future nursing research. In terms of policy, this study argues that healthcare strategies must take a broader, research-based approach. Furthermore, it recommends the urgent acknowledgement and investigation of the contextual barriers to care. Embedding positive, practical and pastoral staff support within organisations should be a priority. Rather than aiming for ‘compassionate staff,’ healthcare organisations may benefit from making multidisciplinary efforts towards developing compassionate healthcare environments.

The aim of this work is to develop a self assessment scale, which measures fears and anxiety to 4-10 years old children when hospitalized. To realize this and responding on the faults found with existing tools, this scale has been constructed based an item response theory model, the Rasch model. When applying the EPAH tool (in French « Echelle des Peurs et d’Anxiété Hospitalières », which means “Hospital Fears and Anxiety Scale”) we follow the story of a hospitalized rabbit by the mean of twelve drawings. We invite the children to respond on three emotional tasks of verbalization: attribution, justification and appropriation of emotion. We also invite them to name the rabbit’s face-expression by assign task of the emotion. The results suggest that the EPAH tool enables us to verify the principal standards for responding to an objective measure, including a unidimensional assessment. Also, the EPAH tool presents good internal consistency and good outcome validity, pointing out the positive effect on the anxiety level of hospitalized children. Otherwise, the verbalization-tasks of emotion permitted us to approach the language development of the hospitalized children. The analyze of their views permitted us to detect an assessment of production of emotional terms to characterize a negative emotional state, but also to mark the presence of a emotional dissemblance. As a conclusion, the EPAH tool favors the assessment of the children’s anticipatory fear and anxiety-level, and it inserts in preoperative preparation of hospitalized children

The interest of the effect of self-compassion on psychological wellbeing has increased. Self-compassion is negatively associated with self-criticism, anxiety and obsession over and evaluation of the own body. Self-compassion is considered to protect against the negative effects of perfectionism. Since self-compassion is believed to improve mental health, it is important to investigate which variables that predict self-compassion. The aim of this study was to examine if the variables body image and perfectionism predicted self-compassion. The self- report questionnaires Self-compassion Scale Short Form, Frosts´s Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale and Body Shape Questionnaire-8C were administered to the participants. The result was calculated using hierarchical regression analysis. The result demonstrated that the subscale regarding perfectionism, Concern over Mistakes and Doubts about Actions, and sex significantly predicted self-compassion and explained a significant proportion of the variance in self-compassion. Body image did not significantly predict self-compassion and did not explain a significant proportion of the variance in self-compassion. Further research regarding potential concordance between perfectionism and body image is desirable.

Resumen
As helping professionals, music therapists show compassion to their clients but may lack necessary self-care skills to prevent burnout and promote well-being. Due to a lack of research in this area, this study investigated reported levels of compassion for others, self-compassion, burnout, secondary traumatic stress, and compassion satisfaction among music therapists in relation to age, gender, and years of professional experience. A survey of 575 board certified music therapists in the USA revealed higher levels of compassion for others than self-compassion, low levels of burnout and secondary traumatic stress, and high levels of compassion satisfaction. Burnout strongly negatively correlated with both self-compassion and compassion satisfaction and strongly positively correlated with secondary traumatic stress. A MANCOVA revealed significant differences in compassion for others and compassion satisfaction based on gender, with female participants reporting significantly higher scores for both constructs. Additionally, there was a trend related to self-compassion and compassion levels increasing over time. There were strong associations between compassion and self-compassion with burnout and secondary traumatic stress; therefore, it would benefit music therapists to cultivate compassion practices to lower burnout risk.

Resumen
Literature Review: Background: Compassion-facilitating interventions (CFIs) seek to increase feelings of reassurance, safeness and well-being, and are suggested as a new psychotherapeutic approach to treat post-traumatic stress. Objectives: This review summarises and synthesises the literature investigating CFIs for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in clinical adult populations. Method: A systematic review of the experimental and intervention literature to date was completed using PubMed, PsycINFO, and Web of Knowledge databases. Results: CFIs show large to medium effect sizes in reducing PTSD in traumatised populations. However, many studies did not compare these interventions to active control conditions, and for the few studies that did, compassion-facilitating interventions were not better at reducing PTSD than the active control conditions. There was also not enough evidence in these studies to indicate a mechanism of change in these interventions. Conclusions: CFIs may be an effective intervention in PTSD, but more high quality research is needed to establish their efficacy over and above well established PTSD treatments. More research is also needed to identify the psychological mechanisms at work in decreasing PTSD symptoms Empirical Paper: Objective: Compassion-facilitating interventions are thought to be promising for treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It is theorised that inducing self compassion through a compassion-facilitating meditation task would interrupt the psychological processes that cause emotional distress and trauma-related intrusions that form post-trauma. Methods: A student sample (n = 72) was exposed to a trauma-film and then either listened to a neutral-emotion audio mediation or a compassion-facilitating meditation (CFM). Self-reported distress, self-compassion and self-criticism were measured at baseline, post-film, post-audio meditation and for seven days following the experiment. Measures of sympathetic arousal and parasympathetic activation were measured at baseline and during the trauma film and audio meditation. Trauma-related intrusions were measured for seven days following the experiment. Results: Lower self-reported distress and higher self-compassion were reported over the seven day follow-up, but not directly after the meditation. No statistical differences between conditions over time were found for any of the physiological measures but skin conductance was higher in the CFM group, contrary to predictions. There were also no statistical differences found between the two conditions in terms of sum daily intrusions following trauma-exposure. Conclusions: This research supports the hypothesis that facilitating self compassion can disrupt some of the observed processes post-trauma, namely felt distress, although only after a delay. These findings are relevant to the theoretical models of PTSD and future clinical interventions.

Resumen
Background: Compassion is to know how another person feel, fatigue is a condition of constant tiredness. Compassion fatigue occurs among caregivers and is characterized by nurses’ empathetic ability to nurture patients and appears physically, mentally and spiritually in nurses and can have a negative outcome on their well-beings. Problem: Compassion fatigue can occur within care giving professions which can affect the nurse and patient negatively. To prevent it, awareness of compassion fatigue should be highlighted in a larger context. Purpose: To describe aspects of compassion fatigue from the nurse perspective. Method: A general literature review has been applied in the thesis work, as eight quantitative articles, two qualitative articles and three articles of mixed method have been used. Findings: Compassion fatigue has shown to affect nurses working in different care departments caused by high work load, stress, time shortage and critically ill patients. Strategies for coping with compassion fatigue turned to be physical activity and support from family, friends and colleagues. Time for recovery was considered important for nurses as they could disconnect their negative thinking. Conclusion: Knowledge about compassion fatigue and its risk factors should be noted to prevent the condition.

Resumen
Systematic Literature Review: The first section of the thesis explored ‘compassion satisfaction’ (CS): a positive effect of caregiving where gratification is derived from caring for patients. Stamm’s model of professional quality of life was employed to analyse 16 quantitative studies for evidence of predictors and correlates of CS in mental health professionals (MHPs). CS was associated with increased age and clinical experience, health and wellbeing, therapeutic bond and the MHP’s capacity to maintain a coherent view of their social world, themselves and their clients. Several papers revealed preliminary evidence of a negative relationship between CS and compassionate stress in MHPs. Research Paper: Given the apparent lack of compassion within healthcare services, this quantitative study investigated the impact of individual differences in 104 direct-care staff on the challenges to compassion they experience towards patients who are detained under the Mental Health Act. The Challenges to Compassion Questionnaire was developed for the purposes of this research, and demonstrated good internal reliability and validity. Overall, staff reported minimal challenges to compassion. A multiple regression analysis revealed that intrapersonal emotional intelligence and CS predicted fewer challenges to compassion. Recommendations for promoting compassionate care target individual, interpersonal and organisational factors. Critical Appraisal: The final section adopted a critical and reflective stance to consider the initial decision-making processes regarding the research paper, including the rationale for the study and the chosen data collection methodology, and the practical and procedural challenges encountered during the course of the research, such as ethical approval processes and the impact of software compatibility on survey response rates. The report then explored the primary constructs adopted within the research paper, including compassion and attachment theory and the implications of their conceptualisations on the research findings, before examining pragmatic applications of the results and offering recommendations for future research.

Resumen
The concept of self-compassion has become increasingly popular in the mental health literature due to its associations with well-being and psychological health. Compassion Focused Therapy is a relatively new therapeutic model which uses a range of techniques, such as compassionate imagery, to enhance self-compassion. Researchers and clinicians have, however, found that individuals can be fearful of compassion, from others and/or towards themselves. This can cause a block to the development of self-compassion and can inhibit the effects of the therapeutic techniques of Compassion Focused Therapy. Objective The present study was designed to explore the relationship between attachment and fear of compassion and the role of different compassionate imagery tasks in reducing fear of compassion and improving affect. Method The study used an experimental between-participants design, in order to explore differences between different imagery tasks on the reduction of fear of compassion and improvement of affect. 189 students and staff were randomly allocated to one of three imagery tasks - a compassionate self imagery task ('self-self’), a compassion from others to the self imagery task ('other-self’), and a control imagery task. Results Findings showed that: 1) avoidant attachment was the strongest predictor of fear of compassion towards the self and fear of compassion from others; 2) that the 'self-self’ task was significantly better than the control task at reducing fear of compassion to the self, but that there were no differences between the imagery tasks at reducing fear of compassion from others, and 3) individuals with high fear of compassion from others and towards the self benefitted more from 'self-self’ imagery than 'other-self’. Implications The results highlight the need for clinicians to consider attachment when working with individuals who fear compassion, and to be aware of the effects of that different compassionate imagery tasks may have on individuals who fear compassion.

To what extent do the foundations and essential concepts of French personalism (1930-1950) make it possible to consider compassion as a way to know the person ? Here is the problem this work faces. The first part analyses the experience of compassion through several figures and forms. After explaining the fundamental axes of French personalism, the second part shows that compassion is problematic to this current of thought because it brings to light personalism inner tensions. The third part confirms and tempers this diagnostic studying the role of compassion in M. Nédoncelle’s and E. Mounier’s works. The fourth part builds on S. Weil’s thought to offer a renewal of this personalism so as to remedy this underestimation of compassion. Finally, in the perspective of such a renewal, the last part questions the relation between personalism and Christianism

Resumen
Aims and objectives. The aim of the current research was to explore the relationship of mindfulness, self- and other-compassion with emotional dysregulation and symptoms in a clinical population suffering from mild-moderate anxiety and depression. Method. In order to investigate the relationships amongst the variables of interest, a cross-sectional design was employed. Quantitative data were collected via five self-report questionnaires measuring mindfulness, self-compassion, other-compassion, emotion dysregulation and emotional distress (anxiety, depression and stress), in addition to demographic information. A total of 94 adults enrolled in Improving Access to Psychological Therapy groups completed the questionnaires. Results. Multiple regression analysis indicated that all three predictor variables (mindfulness, self-compassion and other-compassion) significantly predicted variance within the measure of emotional distress, with mindfulness holding the most predictive power. Only mindfulness and self-compassion significantly predicted variance within the measure of emotion dysregulation, with self-compassion holding the most predictive power. Mediation analysis showed that emotion dysregulation partially mediates the relationship between mindfulness and emotional distress. Additionally, mediation analysis showed that emotion dysregulation perfectly mediates the relationship between self-compassion and 12 emotional distress. Emotion dysregulation did not significantly mediate the relationship between other-compassion and emotional distress. Conclusions. This study was the first to empirically explore the relationship of other-compassion with emotion dysregulation and emotional distress. The current findings suggest that other-compassion was not as important as mindfulness and self-compassion in regards to emotion dysregulation. The role of mindfulness and self-compassion within emotion dysregulation and emotional distress supports previous research findings. It is argued that the current study‟s findings are supportive of theoretical accounts that explain mindfulness and self-compassion as mind-training tools designed to improve emotion regulation in order to reduce emotional distress.

Resumen
This study investigated the impact of a psychoeducational and experiential structured counselor self-care curriculum, developed by Drs. Charles and Kathleen Figley, on compassion fatigue and the prevention of professional impairment as measured by the Professional Quality of Life (ProQOL), Version 5. Volunteer licensed professional counselors, supervisors, and interns from four children's advocacy centers in Texas were assigned to treatment group (n = 21; 20 females, 1 male; mean age 34.4 years) or waitlist control group (n = 21; 19 females, 2 males; mean age 34.6 years). Participating counselors identified themselves ethnically as 64% Caucasian, 26% Hispanic, 7% African-American, and 2% Native-American. Employing a quasi-experimental design, three reliability-corrected analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) were utilized to analyze the data with an alpha level of .05 to assess statistical significance and partial eta squared to assess effect size. With pre-test scores as the covariate, results revealed in the experimental group a statistically significant reduction with large treatment effect for burnout (p = .01; partial ?2 = .15), a statistically nonsignificant reduction with a medium effect for secondary traumatic stress (p = .18; partial ?2 = .05), and a statistically nonsignificant increase with a medium effect for compassion satisfaction (p = .06; partial ?2= .09). Findings supported the use of this curriculum to train counselors on self-care as required of professional counselors by the American Counseling Association code of ethics and listed as a necessary skill in the standards of the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs.

Kramer, Loretta Rose y Loretta Rose Kramer. "Compassion Fatigue Among Travel Nurses". Diss., The University of Arizona, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/626351.

Texto completo
Resumen
Purpose: To describe an educational workshop delivered to travel nurses, with analysis of the shared discussion. Background: Travel nurses work beyond the realm of traditional nursing positions as they typically are contracted for short periods of time, fill positions created by nursing shortages, and are willing to work in various capacities. As currently conceptualized, compassion fatigue is comprised of compassion satisfaction, burnout, and secondary traumatic stress. Travel nurses are at risk for compassion fatigue as they often work on high acuity units such as emergency room and ICU. Additionally, travel nurses lack natural support systems as they often work far from usual supports such as family, which may increase the risk of compassion fatigue. Method: A two-part educational workshop was developed to reduce the risk of compassion fatigue among travel nurses (N=3). Workshops included education and skills training. Participants discussed their experiences, symptoms, and strategies they used to cope with the negative constructs of compassion fatigue. They journaled and make notations of personal and professional experiences including symptoms, triggers, and self-reflection of compassion fatigue and skills learned. Findings: Commonalities included symptoms of fatigue, isolation, disassociation, second-hand grief, physical pain, dysfunctional communication, and questioning role as a nurse. Triggers to compassion fatigue included limited resources, patient complexity, length of shift, patient influences such as gratitude for nursing service, and witnessing loss. Outcomes included self-medicating with alcohol, self-isolating, working extra shifts, and not debriefing with clinical professionals. Implications: Travel nurses experience symptoms of compassion fatigue including burnout and secondary traumatic stress that is consistent with other nursing professionals. The participants did not understand the phenomenon and had no knowledge of how to protect against compassion fatigue. Travel nurses would benefit from incorporating skills and strategies to address the phenomenon of compassion fatigue, burnout and secondary traumatic stress. The data from this educational intervention project magnify the knowledge currently known about the impact and experience of compassion fatigue in nursing populations, specifically travel nurse populations. It provides insight into the possible benefit of focus group discussions and self-care strategies in lessening the impact of compassion fatigue in travel nurse populations.

Resumen

This study examined the relationship between compassion fatigue, how Cognitive Behavioral oriented therapists are, self-efficacy, how positively respondents viewed their time spent in therapy, and caseload. Surveys were mailed out to 400 doctorate level clinical psychologists licensed in Kentucky, Illinois, and Missouri. Respondents completed the Compassion Fatigue Self-Test for Psychotherapists, a demographics form, and a self-efficacy measure. Results indicated that the more positive therapists viewed their time spent in therapy, the lower their risk for compassion fatigue. Also, analyses found that clinicians who reported having a higher percentage of clients with a personality disorder diagnosis would be a higher risk for compassion fatigue.

Resumen
Compassion is potentially an effective emotion-regulation strategy to face the suffering of self and others. The aim of this paper is to provide an evolutionary understanding of compassion and compassion training (CT) by examining the psychological, neural and behavioral effects of loving-kindness meditation and compassion meditation. The author presents various definitions of compassion and examines the physiological and neural processes behind it. Compassion seems to have evolutionary roots but can be limited due to inherited blocks and fears. Compassion is however trainable and can potentially bypass certain evolutionary-based biases. CT results in various significant psychological effects, most notably positive affect, increased (self) compassion, and mindfulness. Evidence is however inconsistent, especially in relation to active controls. Neural effects are significant yet inconsistent across different experimental conditions. CT without a concurrent task activates (1) the right somatosensory cortices (2) the parieto-occipital sulcus, and (3) the right anterior insula. In relation to the socio-affective video task, CT activates medial orbitofrontal cortex, ventral striatum/nucleus accumbens, putamen, and anterior parts of anterior cingulate cortex; regions related to positive affect, motivational reward and affiliation. These findings converge with the reviewed psychological literature. CT also results in increased altruistic and compassionate behavior towards others, even when it’s costly to the self and under no-reciprocity conditions. Behavioral effects are mostly demonstrated in game-settings against active controls but also in one real-life situation. Together, the results suggest that CT is beneficial to individuals as well as inter-group relationships.

Resumen
Compassion has been associated with the nursing profession since the days of Florence Nightingale. It is a general expectation that nurses should be compassionate when they are caring for people. In the United Kingdom (UK) concerns have been raised recently that nurses are failing to be compassionate as they carry out their nursing duties. There is little evidence within the literature of how student nurses perceive compassion as they engage in the pre-registration-nursing programme. In this study, I use narrative to produce case studies as a vehicle for the students to voice their perceptions of compassion. My ethnographic analysis of their stories is framed by my own experience as a professional registered nurse and nurse educator situated within their learning environment, and applies theories of compassion and learning. In my study, themes emerge that demonstrate commonalities, differences and tensions relating to the students’ individual beliefs and behaviours, and to the impact of their professional development as they transcend from university learning spaces into clinical practice.

Resumen
Compassion has become a topic of interest amongst researchers and policy makers. Research has started to explore compassion from the perspectives of staff and patients. Research on compassion with carers is an under researched area. The present thesis aims to address this gap in the literature. Chapter One: This paper presents a systematic review of compassionate care from the perspective of patient and professionals. Seventeen studies met the inclusion criteria and were critically reviewed and evaluated. Within the literature reviewed compassionate care is described as a skilled interpersonal and relational process. The review found that compassionate care needs to be more clearly defined in practice, education and training. Clinical implication of the findings and directions for future research are discussed. Chapter Two: The second paper is a qualitative exploration of carers’ lived experiences of compassion while caring for adults with severe and enduring mental health difficulties. Eight carers were recruited to the study and interviewed using semi-structured interviews. The data was analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Findings revealed two superordinate themes: ‘Burdensome responsibility’ and ‘Something that holds you’. Findings are discussed in the context of clinical implication and areas for future research are considered. Chapter Three: The final paper provides a reflective account on the research process including insights into carers’ experiences of care and compassion. It offers reflections around six attributes of compassion: care for wellbeing, sensitivity, sympathy, empathy, distress tolerance and non-judgemental. This paper allows a chance to reflect on some of the outlying experiences that arose from the research that were not prevalent enough to become central themes.

Resumen
It has been hypothesized that negative emotions, left unresolved, contribute to feelings of burnout experienced by teachers. Self-compassion offers a kind, mindful way of approaching difficult emotions. The purpose of this study is to explore how teachers experience self-compassion by qualitative means. In semi-structured interviews, four elementary school teachers shared critical incidents of self-doubt or disappointment in their teaching. They also completed Neff's (2003a) Self Compassion Survey. Through intra-case and cross case analysis the findings revealed how teachers' lived experiences include episodes of conflict, reflection, resolution, and self-compassion, but in differing orders. Also, participants experienced self-compassion in ways that align with previous work on self-compassion, however an additional element of support seeking emerged. This study provided a context to understand the common ways in which self-compassion was lived out in the classroom while highlighting the differences in participants' experiences. This additional insight into the lived experience of the teachers adds to the body of knowledge regarding emotionality in the classroom and positive ways that teachers can and do regulate emotion through self-compassion. Additionally, participants' drive to seek support from others exposed a social side of self-compassion that Neff's (2003a) definition or a simple dictionary definition did not include.

Resumen
Working in mental health can be an extremely demanding job, which may often lead to compassion fatigue of therapists. This research study examines the factors that contribute to compassion fatigue among play therapists and therapists in the play therapy community. This research sought to measure the relationship between factors such as work-related stressors, demographics, and compassion fatigue. The research study gathered quantitative data from a convenient sample and a random sample. Data was collected via an online survey, which included informed consent, a demographic questionnaire, and the Professional Quality of Life Scale. Forty online surveys were completed by play therapists registered with a specific association (Group X) and at a non-profit agency located in Southern California. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS version 21. A significant key finding was that play therapists are very satisfied with their career path and are experiencing high levels of compassion satisfaction. Another key finding from this study was there is a significant correlation between hours spent per week providing play therapy services and hours spent working with traumatized clients. Also, another key finding was there is a correlation between years licensed and primary work setting. This research study hopes to help play therapists who are interested in play therapy and give insight about compassion fatigue while also giving mental health agencies understanding of the work-related stressors that play therapists face while providing play therapy services.

Resumen
Compassion is an important tenet of nursing care delivery. When compassion is compromised, such as with compassion fatigue (CF), not only is patient care compromised, but also caregivers can be physically and psychologically affected, resulting in stress and burnout. The purpose of this project was to create a web-based educational toolkit focused on prevention of CF, establish the content validity of the elements in this toolkit, and make recommendations regarding its implementation and sustainability. Watson's theory of human caring guided this project. Ten experts with at least 10 years of experience and CF knowledge, a bachelor's degree in nursing, and certification or leadership experience validated the toolkit content using a content validity index. Ten toolkit elements were evaluated on a scale of 0 to 1, with a score of 0.79 or greater indicating relevance to content. Items meeting the score included the definition of CF, signs and symptoms, resources to prevent CF, the CF pledge, tools and links, and the goal and mission of the toolkit. A toolkit on CF might impact social change by providing resources for nurses to recognize and prevent CF, thus improving patient care.

Resumen
Compassion is defined as an interpersonal process involving the noticing, feeling, sensemaking, and acting that alleviates the suffering of another person. Thus, compassion can be understood as a social process rather than as an emotion. With the purpose of contributing to the spread of knowledge about compassion in organizations, this thesis has tried to show why compassion matters at work. It has provided certain knowledge about how compassion can be created, maintained, and reinforced and has observed a variety of ways in which compassion enhances the human capabilities that are necessary for an organization to succeed. Although, in conventional thinking compassion have been seen at best as irrelevant in the workplace, it is actually key to effective and humane organizational cultures.

The purpose of this study was to examine relationships between the treatment of people diagnosed with Personality Disorders and the experiences of burnout, compassion satisfaction, and compassion fatigue among mental health professionals.

Thirty-six mental health professionals completed a self-report survey using the Professional Quality of Life (ProQOL) Scale and indicated the percentage of individuals with Personality Disorders on their current caseloads. The results indicated that, on average, the mental health professionals had low levels of burnout and compassion fatigue and high levels of compassion satisfaction. Additional results indicated a significant positive relationship between the treatment of individuals diagnosed with Personality Disorders and compassion fatigue. Trends were apparent for burnout and compassion satisfaction.

Future research should include a larger and more diverse sample. Implications for social work practice and policy are that there should be more focus on self-care strategies for mental health professions treating a high percentage of individuals diagnosed with Personality Disorders.

Miller, Elizabeth M. "Balancing Compassion Satisfaction and Compassion Fatigue| The Professional Quality of Life of Title IX Coordinators". Thesis, California State University, Long Beach, 2018. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10825128.

Texto completo
Resumen

Title IX Coordinators are educational administrators who play a critical role in providing campus environments free of sex discrimination, harassment, and violence. Their work is demanding, highly regulated, and set in an increasingly volatile political context. There is little research on the experiences of these administrators. Utilizing the Professional Quality of Life framework, this qualitative study explored the experiences of 20 Title IX Coordinators to understand their professional quality of life and organizational factors that influence their experiences. Findings revealed participants’ satisfaction was drawn from passion for “the work” and making a positive impact in their communities, and fatigue and burnout were tied to an intense and overwhelming workload. While fatigue can lead to a breaking point, moderating influences, e.g., coping strategies and balancing compassion with neutrality, mitigated negative factors. Institutional resistance and lack of understanding across stakeholders contributed to compassion fatigue, while institutional commitment and supportive interpersonal relationships affirmed the Title IX Coordinator’s experience. Implications include expanding the Title IX Coordinator’s passion for gender equity across the institution, and building institutional capacity to adequately respond to complaints, to benefit both the experience of the Title IX Coordinator and campus communities at large. Recommendations for policy and practice include creating Title IX teams, institutionalizing campus climate surveys, and supervision committed to building supportive working environments. Future research is recommended on how intersecting identities influence the Title IX Coordinator experience, and understanding campus attitudes toward Title IX and other civil-rights based responsibilities among constituent groups.

Bowles, Vanessa Walters. "Compassion Satisfaction, Compassion Fatigue, and Burnout: A Survey of CACREP Counseling Interns' Perceptions of Wellness". Diss., Virginia Tech, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/30017.

Texto completo
Resumen
Counselor wellness is an important concept that can be taught in counselor education programs. Nonetheless, counseling interns tend to be at a higher risk for impairment issues due to stressors related to being novice counselors. The stress of engaging in therapeutic relationships with clients, lack of clinical experience, idealistic expectations of the profession, and personal issues can hinder their wellness. It is the responsibility of CACREP programs to incorporate wellness education into counselor training, which includes impairment topics such as compassion fatigue and burnout. The lack of this essential education can impede counseling interns' professional growth; create barriers within the therapeutic relationship, and raises questions about programs' gatekeeping policies. This study surveyed 68 counseling interns of 20 CACREP programs to determine: a) their levels of compassion satisfaction, compassion fatigue, and burnout as measured by the Professional Quality of Life (ProQOL) and, b) their perceptions of their programs' wellness curriculum and their knowledge of programs' nonacademic and retention policies as measured by The Counseling Interns' Perceptions of Wellness Survey (CIPW). Furthermore, this study examined the relationship between interns' perceptions of wellness and their levels of compassion satisfaction, compassion fatigue, and burnout. Descriptive and correlational statistics, and a MANOVA analysis were conducted to answer the research questions. The results demonstrate that a percentage of counseling interns were at a risk for compassion fatigue and burnout while providing therapeutic services to clients. Also, there were interns with low levels of compassion satisfaction. Additionally, there were interns who believed their programs were not educating them about counselor wellness and who were not knowledgeable of their programs' gatekeeping policies. There were positive relationships between interns' perceptions of their programs' wellness education and compassion satisfaction, and between compassion fatigue and burnout. There were negative relationships between wellness education and burnout, and compassion satisfaction and burnout. The results of this study suggest that counselor impairment occurs during training. Likewise, this study has reinforced the need to educate counseling students about impairment topics and wellness strategies. Further results suggest that counselor education programs need to strengthen and restructure gatekeeping policies during counselor training.

Roy, Amaryllis. "Self-compassion and attachment priming : does security priming aid self-compassion in self-critical individuals?" Thesis, University of Exeter, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/18348.

Texto completo
Resumen
Self-compassion is increasingly recognised as beneficial in psychotherapy, but can also be experienced as threatening. Attachment priming has been shown to enhance affiliative behaviours even in those with insecure trait attachment styles, and to decrease arousal and threat sensitivity. The current study investigated (a) associations between self-criticism, self-compassion, fear of self-compassion and trait attachment insecurity, and (b) whether attachment-related security priming could promote state self-compassion and reduce physiological arousal when self-compassion induction was attempted by self-critical individuals. 49 participants with high levels of self-reported self-criticism completed either a 'secure' or a 'neutral' prime before undertaking a loving-kindness meditation. Participants' heart rate and skin conductance levels were collected at baseline and during the priming and meditation; participants also self-rated their levels of state self-criticism, state self-compassion and state attachment security at each of these points. Correlational analyses (Spearman's rho) found positive associations between trait self-criticism and trait attachment insecurity and between trait fear of self-compassion and trait attachment insecurity, although not between low trait self-compassion and trait attachment insecurity. Group and time differences were analysed using a combination of parametric (ANOVA, t-test) and non-parametric tests (Mann-Whitney U-test, Kruskal Wallis, Wilcoxon Signed Rank) as some data were not normally distributed). Attachment priming was shown to significantly enhance state self-compassion and also to significantly increase state attachment security and decrease state attachment avoidance, although not state self-criticism or state attachment anxiety, and to give some reductions in physiological arousal. This benefit, however, did not persist in subsequent exposure to loving-kindness meditation, although individuals not receiving attachment priming also showed some reduction of threat and activation of soothing systems from loving-kindness meditation. These findings suggest that attachment priming and loving-kindness meditation may increase self-compassion for some self-critical people, but there are not necessarily cumulative benefits from combining these practices.

Coudeyre, Emmanuel.

Bernstein, Chernoff Cara Rachel. "The Crisis of Caring: Compassion Satisfaction and Compassion Fatigue among Student Conduct and Behavior Intervention Professionals". Scholar Commons, 2016. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/6066.

Texto completo
Resumen
The purpose of this study was to explore the self-perception of compassion satisfaction, compassion fatigue, and burnout by student conduct administrators working in the United States of America. Additionally, this study looked at the years of experience, job responsibilities, on-call responsibilities and direct student contact hours which may impact an individual’s overall professional quality of life. To accomplish the objectives outlined in the purpose statement, the following research questions were explored: 1. What is the relationship between student conduct professionals’ compassion satisfaction, burnout, and secondary traumatic stress? 2. What is the relationship between student conduct professionals’ years of experience and compassion satisfaction, burnout, and secondary traumatic stress? 3. What is the relationship between student conduct professionals’ responsibility areas and compassion satisfaction, burnout, and secondary traumatic stress? 4. What is the relationship between student affairs professionals serving in an on-call capacity and compassion satisfaction, burnout, and secondary traumatic stress? 5. What is the relationship between student conduct professionals’ amount of direct student contact and the compassion satisfaction, burnout, and secondary traumatic stress? This study utilized a quantitative methodology to collect data. For the purposes of this study, members of the Association for Student Conduct Administration were selected as the intended sample population. The study sample was comprised of 381 individuals (n=381). The web-based survey included Stamm’s (2010) Professional Quality of Life Scale (ProQOL), closed-ended questions as well as a demographic survey. The study findings indicated that student conduct and behavior intervention professionals exhibited average levels of compassion satisfaction, burnout, and secondary traumatic stress. Correlations within the study sample existed negatively between compassion satisfaction and secondary traumatic stress with a positive correlation between burnout and secondary traumatic stress. Statistically significant results included the relationship between compassion satisfaction and the job responsibilities of academic integrity and alternative dispute resolution. Additionally, a statistically significant finding between burnout and the job responsibilities of student organizational conduct and Title IX investigation and adjudication. Lastly, a statistically significant difference between hours of direct student contact hours and secondary traumatic stress as well as a statistically significant predictor between hours of direct student contact hours and compassion satisfaction were established.

Bayramoglu, Ali. "Self-compassion In Relation To Psychopathology". Phd thesis, METU, 2011. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/12613940/index.pdf.

Resumen
The aim of this thesis was to examine the concept of self-compassion in relation to psychopathology with mediating effects of experiential avoidance and metacognition in a Turkish university student sample. Self-Compassion which is a recently formulated promising concept in western psychology consists of three components: self-kindness, common humanity and mindfulness. In addition to self-compassion, recent psychological concepts of cognitive (metacognition) and behavioral (experiential avoidance) perspectives were investigated through models. In this thesis, the negative relationship between self-compassion and psychopathology (depression and anxiety) with mediating effects of experiential avoidance and metacognition was tested. Prior to main analyses, psychometric properties of the scales measuring self-compassion and experiential avoidance were tested. Then, three different models were tested with structural equation modeling (SEM). In these analyses, the proposed full mediation models were compared to empirically alternative models. Self-compassion was found to be significantly and negatively related to both depression, and anxiety. In the first model experiential avoidance fully mediated the relationship between self-compassion and psychopathology. Moreover, metacognitive factors and metacognition as a whole concept mediated the relation between self-compassion and psychopathology. However, they were not as powerful as experiential avoidance. Results of this thesis supported the literature about empowering effect of self-compassion against psychopathology. Furthermore, relationships were mediated by concepts of both modern cognitive and behavior therapies. However, self-compassion, as a fundamental element of psychotherapy, was the focus of this thesis. Findings of the study were discussed in the context of the relevant literature.

Selman, Jennifer M. "Lasting impact : the compassion of strangers". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/63344.

Texto completo
Resumen
The purpose of this study was to explore and understand the lasting impact of compassion from strangers. Eight participants graciously shared their experience of a period of suffering, the unexpected compassion they received from a stranger, and the lasting impact it had on them. Six people participated in a single interview with the researcher and two participants chose to write letters to describe their experience. Each interview was transcribed. An arts-based methodology was used. I approached the study as an a/r/tographer, utilizing poetic inquiry, photography, contemplative spaces and life-writing as ways to explore, describe, and understand the multi-faceted experiences of the participants. The compassion of strangers was unexpected and had a lasting impact on the participants. It broadened their perspectives about strangers, helped build feelings of gratitude, and positively altered their sense of self. Inherent in the eight experiences were threads of suffering, compassion, unexpectedness, interconnectedness, gratitude, and self.

Sharp, Tamara D. y Tamara D. Sharp. "Compassion Fatigue Among Arizona Transplant Nurses". Diss., The University of Arizona, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/626346.

Texto completo
Resumen
Purpose: To conduct an educational intervention to reduce compassion fatigue among Arizona transplant nurses. Background: Burnout, secondary traumatic stress, and loss of compassion satisfaction raise the risk of compassion fatigue. Transplant nurses support the patient continuum of life and death, and often experience emotional and physical exhaustion and grief when dealing with poor outcomes or patient loss. When patients disregard the value of their new organ or are non-compliant with medications, nurses may feel conflicted. There is a paucity of research as to how those situations are experienced among transplant nurses. Method: Two workshops were conducted to reduce the risk of compassion fatigue among transplant nurses (n=7) through the delivery of educational and skills training. Education included symptoms, perceptions, triggers and outcomes of compassion fatigue. Skills to reduce compassion fatigue were outlined, such as self-reflection, mindfulness, healthy boundaries, and reaching out. Discussion content was analyzed for commonalities. Findings: Participants reported an overall high level of personal satisfaction within their specialty, relating this to the improved quality of life for patients who otherwise faced terminal illness or imminent death. Burnout and secondary traumatic stress experiences were deemed as inherent within this nursing practice. Symptoms of headaches, nausea, joint pain, and extreme fatigue were described as occurring in times of increased stress. Triggers reported for these symptoms included poor teamwork, lack of management support, and high nurse-to-patient care ratios. Ethical and moral dilemmas were unanimously reported as causing the highest levels of stress and professional dissatisfaction. Implications: Burnout among transplant nurses is perceived as inherent to this specialty due to associated challenges with a life and death continuum of patient care. Participants asserted that the nurse-to-patient relationship remains rewarding, which helps to prevent the onset of compassion fatigue. Participants conveyed that the term compassion fatigue is viewed as negative and does not accurately represent compassion levels when feeling fatigued from providing patient care.
