Resumen
Research has emphasized the important role of recalling childhood experiences on adult mental health, and also the benefits of self-compassion on well-being. This study explored self-compassion as a mediator between early memories with family and peers and quality of life, on a wide age range female sample ( N = 645). Path analysis revealed that self-compassion mediated the impact of both types of memories on women’s perceived quality of life. Overall, results revealed that the recall of early positive memories, either with family and peers, associate with a more compassionate self-to-self relationship, and the perception of greater psychological and social well-being.

Resumen
The purpose of thi study is to examine whether self-compassion can predict the level of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among adolescents who live in foster care. The study used quantitative method with cross-sectional design. The sample were 140 teenagers recruited using convenience sampling technique from several foster care in Bekasi and Jakarta. Self Compassion Scale (SCSC) and KIDSCREEN-27 instrument were used to measure the level of self-compassion and HRQoL. Regression test was found that the influence of self-compassion toward HRQoL is significant on the dimension of physical wellbeing, psychological wellbeing, parent relations and autonomy, and school environment. However, self-compassion did not have significant influence toward health-related quality of life on the dimension of social support and peers. The role of self-compassion toward HRQoL implied that adolescents living at foster care need to develop a compassionate attitude for theirself in order to achieve better HRQoL.

Resumen
The purpose of this study was to explore factors that contributed to the development of self-compassion among highly self-compassionate women varsity athletes. More specifically, the research question was: how did women varsity athletes with high self-compassion perceive they became self-compassionate? To purposefully sample participants, 114 women varsity athletes completed the Self-Compassion Scale (Neff, 2003b). Ten athletes with high self-compassion scores then participated in individual interviews and a follow-up second interview. Data were analyzed using interpretive phenomenological analysis (Smith & Osborn, 2003). Analysis produced three main themes that contributed to the development of self-compassion: (a) role of parents (seeking and receiving help from parents, parents teaching self-kindness, parents putting experiences in perspective); (b) gaining self-awareness; and (c) learning from others (peers, siblings, coaches, sport psychologists). These findings provide insights into the ways in which self-compassion can be learned and taught, and have implications for practitioners who work with women athletes.

Resumen
Objective: The objective of this study was to design and validate a compassion-based academic motivation model specifically tailored for high school students. Methods and Materials: This study employed a mixed-methods approach. The qualitative phase involved semi-structured interviews with educational experts to identify key themes related to compassion-based motivation. These themes were used to develop the compassion-based academic motivation model. The quantitative phase involved validating the model using the Content Validity Ratio (CVR) and Content Validity Index (CVI), with data collected from 15 experts and 100 high school students in Natanz city. The validation process ensured the reliability and relevance of the model's components. Findings: The findings indicated that the compassion-based academic motivation model is effective in enhancing students' intrinsic motivation and engagement. Key themes such as non-materialism, gratitude training, and relaxation techniques were identified as central to fostering a supportive and compassionate learning environment. The validation results confirmed the model's relevance and reliability, with all components achieving acceptable CVR and CVI values. The study also found that students who participated in compassion-based activities were more likely to engage in collaborative learning and help their peers. Conclusion: The compassion-based academic motivation model presents a promising approach for enhancing student motivation and engagement in high school settings. By integrating compassion into educational practices, educators can create a more supportive and inclusive learning environment that promotes both academic achievement and social-emotional well-being. The findings suggest that compassion-based practices can address some limitations of traditional motivational strategies and support sustained academic motivation.

Resumen
In recent decades, attitudes towards appearance comparison, and self-disapproval have rapidly increased, and these are attitudes strongly associated with psychological disorders. The present study aims to investigate the underlying patterns of depression, appearance-based stress, dietary constraints, and social and celebrity appearance comparison among young adults. It also examines the role of self-compassion in moderating the relationship between psychological dysfunctions and appearance comparison as well as the criteria and influences contributing to appearance comparison. Data on BMI, the measures of depression, appearance-based stress, eating restraints, appearance comparison, self-compassion, and predictors of peers and celebrity appearance comparison were collected from 434 college students (Age: Mean = 22; SD = 2.36; Male = Female = 217) in Sialkot, Pakistan. The data was analyzed by using the Hierarchical Regression Model. The results revealed that respondents who compared their appearances to peers and celebrities had increased depression and appearance-based stress while eating constraints didn’t affect the appearance-based comparison, stress, and depression. Moreover, self-compassion significantly moderated the relationship between depression, appearance-based stress, and appearance comparison whereas an insignificant moderation effect is observed between eating restraints and self-compassion. Despite psychological distresses such as depression, appearance-based stress, and eating restraints, appearance comparisons are connected to appearance-based victimization, media appearance pressure, social-cultural appearance pressure, appearance conversation, and self-consciousness.

Resumen
Prior research suggests that employees aware of their peers’ mistreatment by management and who themselves are target to such mistreatment help their peers more than employees who have been exposed only to peers’ mistreatment. However, no studies have tried to explain the way this process occurs. Suggesting that this help is performed compassionately, this study models personal and peers’ unjust treatment, empathic concern, and kindness following Kanov et al. compassion process: noticing, feeling, and responding. It hypothesizes that under interactions between personal and peers’ mistreatment staff are more empathically concerned about peers and, hence, amplify kindness out of compassion. Results supported empathic concern as a mediator and, hence, kindness as compassionate behavior. Unexpectedly, however, staff reduced (rather than increased) empathic concern and kindness. Tragedy-of-the-commons is invoked to explain these unexpected results. Simultaneous mistreatment could lead staff to perceive justice as a scarce common resource that is ultimately a source of dispute and uncooperativeness.

Resumen
Anxiety disorders are the most prevalent mental health issues among adolescents worldwide. These issues can make it hard for individuals to control their fear of future events, and they can lead to a decline in physical, cognitive, social relationships, and occupational functions. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of group intervention based on self-compassion principles in reducing anxiety levels among high school adolescents. Self-compassion involves having a kind and understanding attitude towards oneself when facing suffering. The intervention was conducted in a group setting because adolescents often find it easier to relate and learn from their peers. This study suggests that group intervention based on self-compassion principles can increase self-compassion levels and decrease anxiety levels in high school adolescents. However, the significance of the quantitative changes remains inconsistent. Factors such as participants’ intrinsic motivation, commitment to attendance, school support, group cohesiveness, and the facilitator’s role in improving therapeutic group dynamics need to be evaluated to enhance the effectiveness of this group intervention.

PURPOSE: Rates of burnout among health care professionals are rising. Oncology nurses are at the forefront of cancer care, and maintenance of their well-being is crucial to delivering high-quality care to people with cancer. The purpose of this pilot study was to implement a novel intervention, Storytelling Through Music, and examine the effects on depression, insomnia, loneliness, self-awareness, self-compassion, burnout, secondary traumatic stress, and compassion satisfaction in oncology nurses. METHODS: This two-group (intervention and control), quasi-experimental study of a 6-week intervention combined storytelling, reflective writing, songwriting, and stress management skills. RESULTS: Participants (N = 43) were predominately white (98%), with 27% reporting Hispanic ethnicity, and female (95%); their average oncology experience was 8.5 years. Both groups improved significantly over time on all measures. Compared with the control group, participants in the intervention group also had significantly less loneliness ( F[3, 98] = 7.46; P < .001) and insomnia ( F[3, 120] = 5.77; P < .001) and greater self-compassion ( F[3, 105] = 2.88; P < .05) and self-awareness ( F[3, 120] = 2.42; P < .10). CONCLUSION: There are few opportunities for health care professionals to reflect on the impact of caregiving. The Storytelling Through Music intervention provided a structured space for reflection by participants, individually and among their peers, which decreased loneliness and increased self-compassion. Both factors relate to the burnout that affects the oncology health care workforce.

Addiction is a complex issue influenced by neurobiological, emotional, and relational factors that contribute to the persistence of addictive behaviors and limit access to psychotherapy. The objective of this thesis is to examine the influence of compassion and psychological flexibility as protective factors that promote the maintenance of abstinence. The thesis is structured into three parts: a theoretical section that presents a multidimensional approach to addiction and details the various psychotherapies developed to support recovery processes; an experimental section comprising three studies; and a third part dedicated to the general discussion and synthesis of the research findings. The first study focuses on the development and evaluation of the MY ACT Addiction therapeutic program, specifically designed to support the maintenance of abstinence in patients with polyaddictions and psychiatric comorbidities. This program integrates the principles of compassion-focused therapy with behavioral therapies (CBT, ACT). A multiple case series protocol was employed to assess the program's feasibility, acceptability, and clinical impact through qualitative and quantitative measures. Results reveal a high level of acceptability for the program, along with significant clinical improvements in craving, depression, anxiety, psychological flexibility, and components of self-compassion. These findings suggest that compassion-based psychological interventions may serve as a transdiagnostic protective factor promoting the maintenance of abstinence in individuals with polyaddictions. The second study examines the relationships between addiction, mental health, and attachment styles, as well as the role of psychological flexibility and self-compassion. Results indicate that individuals suffering from addiction have experienced more traumatic events and exhibit higher levels of depression and anxiety, alongside a negative perception of their close relationships. Psychological flexibility emerges as a central mediating factor in these interrelations, underscoring the importance of integrating therapeutic approaches centered on psychological flexibility, interpersonal relationships, and compassion in addiction treatment. Finally, the third study explores fears of compassion, perceived as barriers to establishing secure relationships and accessing psychotherapeutic care. The study validates the French version of the "Fears of Compassion Scale" and proposes a short version while examining its correlations with other relevant concepts. Results confirm the psychometric robustness of this short version in Francophone clinical contexts and its utility for clinical and research assessments in French. These findings open new avenues for understanding the impact of fears of compassion on mental health and their influences on addictive behaviors. In conclusion, this thesis highlights the protective role of psychological flexibility and compassion in maintaining abstinence, as well as the relevance of integrative and process-oriented approaches. The results have led to scientific publications, including one in a peer-reviewed journal (Annales Médicopsychologiques), an article submitted to Personality and Individual Differences, another article currently under submission, and a widely disseminated article (Santé Mentale), as well as presentations at national and international conferences (Congrès de l'Encéphale, Annual Congress of the AFTCC, French Congress of Psychiatry, Annual Congress of the International Society of Addiction Medicine)

Reconsidering event media pictures trough the prism of collective fears allows raising differently the political and social issues. The evolution of the news media with Internet as well as the frequent public debates on the news pictures reveal a new apprehension of event pictures. The ambiguous relation of belief and doubt inherent to any picture reinforce the virality of today's media images. Photographs and videos of terrorist attacks, disasters and various crises spread and redefine fears, bringing out the fear of pictures. Powers of media and pictures combine together creating a climate of anxiety which oscillates between reality and fiction. This fine arts doctoral research questions the practices and the positioning of artists who problematize these relationships between images, fears and events. The experience of the mediatised event, re-proposed and re-made by these artists, is built in the relationship between excess and lack of visibility (which pictures to diffuse or not) and can exorcise or amplify collective fears, like a call for vigilance. Articulating theoretical investigation and personal practice - which is based on the collection of media pictures - allows demonstrating the negative and positive aspects of the uses of pictures and fears today, simultaneously remedies and poisons of a worried society

Resumen
Stigma is an individual’s devalued identity or other characteristic that may lead to stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination. Decades of literature show that experiencing stigma has negative effects on mental health outcomes. However, some research suggests that the experience of stigma leads individuals to cope with adversity in a meaningful way. Understanding how people benefit from adversity will help promote less distress for people who experience different types (visible or covert) of stigma. Three central questions were addressed. First, is level of distress different based on experience with stigma? Second, does having self-compassion buffer individuals with stigma, in that people with more self-compassion would have less distress than those with less self-compassion? Third, does more stigma experiences lead to more compassion toward others and contribute to lower levels of distress? To explore these questions, participants (N = 416) at a southeastern university completed on-line surveys to assess experience with stigma, compassion, and distress. Separate hierarchical multiple regression analyses were used to examine whether (1) quantity of stigma, (2) directness of stigma, (3) level of visibility of stigma were related to distress. The direct experience of stigma and the lack of visibility of the stigmatizing characteristic significantly predicted higher levels of distress (b = .09, p < .01; b = .09, p < .01; respectively). In order to examine self-compassion as a moderator of the effect of stigma on distress, we conducted moderated regression analysis, with distress as the dependent variable, the centered stigma and self-compassion variables, as well as, the interaction between stigma and self-compassion, as predictors. This hypothesis was not supported. In order to address central question three, indirect effects were tested using bootstrapping (an SPSS script; Preacher and Hayes). Indirect experiences of stigma predicted compassion for others (b = .04, p < .05) which predicted less distress (b = -.32, p < .01). Given these results a follow-up study was conducted to further investigate these relationships. In a follow-up study of participants experiencing either a covert or invisible stigmatizing characteristic, self-compassion is induced by encouraging the participant to help another with the same stigmatizing characteristic. Preliminary results of the inductions effects on compassion for others, self-compassion, and distress will be presented.

When disasters and catastrophes are prominent features of social and collective life, our aesthetic and cognitive vision or conception of the world is challenged or even overwhelmed. The contemporary world is experiencing a crisis that has shaken our certainties about nature and society’s control. This crisis is paradoxical, because it is rooted in our immense powers of transformation; the very same powers that sustain our hopes of progress. The unexpected consequences of these powers now feed our collective anxieties and fears. This research takes a sociological perspective to assess the influence of the social imaginary on the production of disaster events, and, in turn, the impact of the production of disaster events on the opinions, attitudes and risk-prevention behaviors and social representations of security. Based on a corpus of ten catastrophes (the December 1999 storm in Western Europe to the Fukushima disaster in 2011), and supported by field work (press, literature, cinema, video games and also disaster preparedness groups), this work reveals the effectiveness of the Durandian archetype and reveals reactivation of ancient myths and the emergence of new tales in the social complex, while introducing a new idea in the Occident: our age is fascinated by its power, but also terrified of a future in which it can see only promises of decline

In a world where insecurities, violence and disasters seem to be increasing on a daily basis, compassion, a moral sentiment of co-suffering and motivation to alleviate it, plays an important role, especially in humanitarian action. However, compassion is not a constant feeling, and our emotions and compassion towards tragedies do not always resonate with egalitarian principles. This thesis seeks to explore the potential relationship between field experience, in humanitarian action, and compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue. Departing from two contrasting hypotheses, grounded in theories of compassion, it investigates the factors, relating to field experience, that affect this moral sentiment, in a single case study of the Network on Humanitarian Action (NOHA). Through a quantitative survey design, combined with semi-structured interviews, the study finds that there exists no isolated correlation between field experience and compassion fatigue or satisfaction. However, the study concludes that compassion is affected by several intervening variables, relating to field experience, which can result in either compassion fatigue or satisfaction, resonating with both hypotheses.

Resumen
The most visible and heavily reported problems of different cultures living together, unsurprisingly perhaps, centre on housing and accommodation. The principal areas of tension appear to be two-fold. First, recent immigrants being housed in already- deprived areas. Second, Romany Travellers, with their own form of desperation, trying to settle en masse against the wishes of locals and often in breach of planning laws. This problem has grown in recent times as their nomadic lifestyle has been increasingly outlawed, beginning most notably in recent times with section 39 of the Public Order Act 1986, expressed to prevent New Age Travellers from converging on or around festival sites, such as Stonehenge, but used from day one against Romany Travellers on the waysides of England. These facts alone are enough to explain the tensions between different cultures. But a slightly deeper look reveals a rather more contradictory picture. It involves the politicians, who pass equality laws to protect such people, yet with their public comments, provoke animosity towards the same people. The matter is aggravated by some more subtle, but equally populist, judicial comments. These comments, alongside some of saddest events in recent British social history, are considered below. It is suggested that Britain’s equality laws cannot achieve their potential to facilitate multiculturalism whilst being undermined by the lawmakers.

Resumen
Empathy and compassion are vital skills for emotional and social development, motivating prosocial behaviors and effective conflict resolution. Empathy involves understanding others' emotions, while compassion drives actions to alleviate their suffering. These skills can be developed through educational programs and interventions like mindfulness and emotional intelligence training. In this brief, we introduce more about its relevance, successful initiatives to foster them, and tools to measure them.

Resumen
How are natives attitudes towards migrants shaped by economic crises? Natives could show more compassion towards migrants as everyone faces a common threat. Alternatively, natives prejudice could rise as competition for scarce economic opportunities increases. We conduct an online survey to 3,400 Colombian citizens and randomly prime half of them to think about the economic consequences of COVID-19, before eliciting their altruism and attitudes towards Venezuelan migrants. We find that natives attitudes towards migrants are substantially more negative in the treatment relative to the control group. Individuals ages 18 to 25 years, however, respond to the treatment by showing more altruism.
