AbstractIn 1910 the print room at Dresden acquired an unsigned portrait drawing of the clergyman Johannes Junius (c.1587-1635). The drawing has been successively attributed to Hendrick Goltzius and Jacob Matham and is currently regarded as the work of Matthias van den Bergh (1617-1665). In this article it is proposed to attribute the drawing to Pieter Saenredam (1597-1665). Junius' portrait was drafted in black chalk. At a later stage this chalk drawing was worked up in pen and brown ink. The ink version differs from the chalk drawing in a few important details. The figure is placed in an oval with a rectangular surround. Everything outside that surround is treated sketchily or left as it was. This suggests that the drawing was a preliminary study for an engraving. A caption at the top identifies the sitter as Johannes Junius at the age of 45 in 1632. To the left of the head the date is more specific: 'Anno 1632 den 5 Julij'. Jan Pietersz de Jonge (Johannes Petri Junius) was born in Assendelft c. 1587 and returned to his native village as a minister of the church in 1618. In 1630 he moved to Bois-le-Duc, which had been conquered by Frederik Hendrik a year previously and was now in sore need of clergymen. Junius worked in's-Hertogenbosch until his death in 1635. Assendelft was also the birthplace of Pieter Saenredam, a second cousin of Junius. In the summer of 1632 Saenredam spent a month in Bois-le-Duc. Twelve of the drawings he executed there have been preserved. They are views of the town and architectural studies of the town hall, St. John's Cathedral and St. Peter's Church. The first drawing dates from June 29), the last from July 23. The portrait of Junius dated July 5 1632 thus fits exactly into Saenredam's Bois-le-Duc period. It was drawn a mere five days earlier than Sacnredam's first drawing of St. Peter's, the church where Junius was a minister. The handwriting on Junius' portrait bears a close resemblance to the handwriting on other drawings by Saenredam. The same applies to the way the date is written. Unfortunately there is virtually no material for stylistic comparison. Portraits are rare in Saenredam's oeuvre. The only extant portrait acknowledged as his work is a chalk drawing of Jan Jansz. van Ermelo of 1636. There arc however a few engravings after Saenredam which are closely related to the portrait of Junius. In 1629 Jan van de Velde made four engravings of Counter-Reformational ministers and in 1632 a portrait of the historian Antonius Bor, all after designs by Saenredam. The poses of the sitters and the oval framework correspond to Junius' portrait. The ministers have a common background too, for they were all orthodox Calvinists. The portrait of Junius may have been a design for a print. Direct evidence of this is found not only in the composition of the drawing with its distinctive oval and the rectangular surround, but also in lines quoted from a poem by Wilhelmus Suerendonck in Jan van Oudenhoven's history of Bois-le-Duc of 1649 - lines eminently appropriate to an engraving of Junius. No such engraving has surfaced as yet, however.

La fete Natale Petri de cathedra pouvait avoir ses origines dans un contexte d'une fete paienne de la Cara cognatio ou Caristia, qui cloturait par un banquet de la famille les six jours de Parentalia (commemoration annuelle des morts). Mais elle n'etait pas une commemoration funéraire liee au martyre de S. Pierre et son culte dans les catacombes ou au Vatican. Elle celebrait plutot s. Pierre comme garant de l'enseignement et de l'unite. En effet, le mot cathedra n'evoque pas seulement le siege vide pour le défunt dans les ceremonies funeraires, comme l'a constaté Th. Klauser, mais aussi la chair du docteur et son dignite.

Resumen
One of the genres of easel painting that remains less pretentious to politics is landscape. The city of Chisinau, one of the most important cities of the Republic, was and remains a source of inspiration for artists Eugenia Gamburd, Rostislav Ocușco, Mihail Petric, Filimon Hămuraru, Ludmila Țonceva, Vasile Toma, Inesa Țîpina, Petru Jireghea, Ion Jumatii, Ion Chitoroagă, Florentin Leancă and others. That is one of the topics addressed by artists reflecting moments of relaxation, rest, sports - recreational centres (parks, lakes, stadiums etc.). This article analyzes the paintings from the collection of the National Museum of Art of Moldova, but also the private collections of plastic artists concerning the rest areas of Chisinau. These paintings made on the subject under research can be attributed not only to the landscape genre but also, in some cases, to genre painting. The subject becomes current for painters with the arrangement of the capital’s parks: The square of the Ensemble of the Metropolitan Cathedral of Chisinau, the Public Garden of Chisinau, the Botanical Garden, the Valley of Roses park, the Valley of Mills park, the Ghidighici Reservoir, the Dinamo Stadium etc.

Background The article presents results of a ground penetrating radar (GPR) scanning carried out in a site of the Epiphany Cathedral of Brotherhood Monastery in Kyiv, Ukraine, destroyed in 1936 by the Soviets. The Cathedral is known as a burial site of Hetman Petro Sahaidachnyi (1582–1622), a Ukrainian Cossack political and civic leader, guardian and patron of Kyiv Brotherhood Monastery. The collection of archival documents, blueprints, stock sources, photographs and cartographic materials of the 17th-19th centuries, as well as historical works of the 19th-21st centuries, were thoroughly analyzed and used as a basis for the interpretation of geophysical results. The set of historical data covers the period from 1615, that is, from the beginning of the construction of the wooden Epiphany Church, the predecessor of the cathedral, to the present day. Methods Summarized information about the construction, restoration after the fire, functioning and destruction of the Cathedral, as well as about the construction on its site in the 20th century, archaeological research in the 20th-21st centuries, was used to clarify possible location of hidden foundations and target GPR measurements. In this context, written testimonies of archaeologists who personally observed the foundations of the cathedral became especially valuable. The shielded GPR antennas, with a central frequency of 300 MHz and 700 MHz, is used for non-invasive investigation. Results GPR scanning specified the site and showed the best-preserved group of foundations of the western wall of the nave of the Epiphany Cathedral. Conclusions An integrated historical and geophysical study provided the basis to certify the foundation of the Epiphany Cathedral as a protected object of cultural heritage and facilitated its archaeological research.

A painting of the Virgin and Child, signed as “OPVUS P. PETRI”, from the former Fareham Collection (today at the Courtauld Institute of Art), has been known in the scholarly literature for a long time but has only been subject to tangential analyses. These studies attempted to attribute it to painters meeting relatively dubious criteria: that their name was Peter (Petar) and that they could be linked to the painting circle of Squarcione or, more specifically, to that of Carlo Crivelli with whose early works, especially the Virgin and Child (the Huldschinsky Madonna) at the Fine Arts Gallery in San Diego, the Courtauld painting shares obvious connections. Roberto Longhi ascribed it to the Paduan painter Pietro Calzetta in 1926, while Franz Drey, in 1929, considered it to be the work of Pietro Alemanno, Crivelli’s disciple, who worked in the Marche region during the last quarter of the fifteenth century. After the Second World War, the Courtauld painting was almost completely ignored by the experts. The only serious judgement was that expressed by Pietro Zampetti, who established that it was an almost exact copy of Crivelli’s Huldschinsky Madonna, meaning that if Calzetti had painted it, he would have done it while Carlo was still in the Veneto, before he went to Zadar.The search for information which can shed more light on the attribution of the Virgin and Child from the Courtauld is aided by the valuable records in the Fondazione Federico Zeri at the Università di Bologna. The holdings of the Fototeca Zeri include three different photographs of the Courtauld painting with brief but useful accompanying notes. Of particular importance is the intriguing inscription on the back of one of the photographs, which points to the painting’s Dalmatian origin. In a certain way, this opens the possibility that it might be linked to another painter who was close to the Crivelli brothers: the Zadar priest and painter Petar Jordanić. That he may have been the one who painted it is indicated by the signature itself, which could be read as “OPVUS P(RESBITERI) PETRI”.Archival records about Petar Jordanić provide almost no information about his work as a painter. Apart from his signature of 1493 on a no-longer extant polyptich from the Church of St Mary at Zadar, the only record of his artistic activities is one piece of information: that in 1500 he took part in a delegation which was sent from Zadar to its hinterland charged with the task of making drawings of the terrain which could be used to help defend the town against the Ottoman Turks. However, more than thirty documents which mention him do paint a picture of his life’s journey and his connection with Zadar. The most important basis for any consideration of a possible connection between Petar Jordanić and Carlo Crivelli can be found in the will of his father Marko Jordanov Nozdronja (in late 1468) where Petar was named as the executor, meaning that at this point he was of age. Therefore, it can be concluded that he was born between 1446 and 1448. This makes him old enough to have been taught by Carlo during his stay in Zadar from c. 1460 to 1466. Although relatively modest, the oeuvre of Petar Jordanić demonstrates striking connections with the paintings of Carlo and Vittore Crivelli, and Ivo Petricioli has already put forward a hypothesis that he may have been taught by one of the brothers.The comparison between the painting from the Courtauld Institute of Art in London and the known works of Petar Jordanić (the Virgin and Child from a private collection in Vienna; the Virgin and Child from the Parish Church at Tkon; fragments of a painted ceiling from Zadar Cathedral; the lost polyptich from the Church of St Mary at Zadar) reveals a multitude of similar features. Apart from the general resemblance in the physiognomies of the Virgin and Christ Child which represent the most conspicuous analogies, a number of very specific “Morellian” elements can also be noted in the manner in which the faces were painted. These similarities are particularly apparent when one compares the head of the Christ Child on the painting from London and his head on the one from Tkon, which are almost identically depicted. Further similarities between the London painting and the one at Vienna can be seen in the way in which landscapes were painted and in the similar decorations of the gold fabrics in the backgrounds with their undulating scrolls and sharp almond-shaped leaves.However, with regard to visual characteristics, it is apparent at first sight that the quality of the London painting is markedly higher and that it is stylistically more advanced than those works which are attributed with certainty to Jordanić. These differences can be explained by the possibility that this was a more or less direct copy of one of Carlo Crivelli’s painting, probably not the Huldschinsky Madonna but one that was very similar to it and subsequently lost.Naturally, if the London painting is attributed to Petar Jordanić, meaning that it was produced in Zadar, then the argument on the basis of which the Huldschinsky Madonna has been dated to the time before Crivelli’s arrival in Zadar becomes a counter-argument, and, in that way, corroborates the possibility that the Huldschinsky Madonna, which shares a large number of similar elements with the painting from the Courtauld Institute of Art, was created while Carlo was in Zadar.

Abstract „Unity and Unification“ of the church, the „majority“ of believers and „ecclesia mathematica“ in the light of newly edited texts by Nikolaus of Cusa.The Heidelberg Edition of Opera Omnia presents vol. XV/1, Opuscula III, fasc. 1. At the council of Basle, while writing his most important political work De concordantia catholica, Nicolaus of Cusa published also some reflections on the reductio of the „Bohemians“ (i.e. the Hussites) regarding the „utraquist“ communion. Nicolaus suggests, according to patristic models by Cyprian and Augustin, to accept a „majority“ of the papal church only in strict connection with the cathedra Petri that guaranteed the truth of faith. Firstly, this idea of a majority is considered. Secondly, ecclesia mathematica or concilium mathematicum will be analysed: In the bitter conflict on Franciscan poverty at the beginning of the 14th century, pope John XXII himself characterized the dominium (ownership) of the Roman church as merely nudum verbale et mathematicum.

The construction of a Roman Catholic church dedicated to St Peter in Stari Trg near Trepča can be related to the presence of Catholic migrants, Saxon miners and merchants from Dubrovnik and Kotor, who colonized the area around the rich mine during the medieval period. This article focuses on the role of the Ragusan colony in the construction and furnishing of the Kosovo church. Judging from the remnants of the church, it may be presumed that it was a three-nave structure, with a dome above the last bay of the central nave, same as the cathedrals of Dubrovnik and Kotor, and that a workshop from the littoral probably also decorated the church with paintings. The fact that in 1487 the parish priest at St Peter's church commissioned the altar polyptych from the Ragusan painter Stjepan Ugrinović shows that architects and painters may have been invited from Dubrovnik in the earlier centuries as well, and that there may have been continuity in their work on St Peter’s church in Trepča.

Sofia committee of the All-Ukrainian Archaeological Committee lead by the VUAN academician Oleksa Petrovych Novytskyi, made a lot to research and preserve the most important Rus`-Ukrainian memorial – Sofia Kyivska. Significant efforts have been done to preserve the icons, frescos, and mosaics of the cathedral. Effort of AUAC and Sofia committee to reconstruct and restore the memorial in 1920–1930-th is also analysed. Archaeological field works carried out in 1920-th still remain not well known despite the fact that they were exceptionally important, although not supported by authorities. It is confirmed that planned extensive archaeological excavations were not carried out because of lack of funds. Archaeological works were strongly needed when some parts of the building were ruined by collapses on its territory. For example, in July 1924 a great hole was appeared between the bell tower and Small Sofia. Regretfully, Sofia Committee scientists could not analyse the hole, because without their knowledge the hole was filled out with trash by workers who repaired the cathedral. Next year one more hole near the North wall of Sofia appeared. It is stated that scientists with material and organizational support of the communal department (workers and instruments were provided) archaeological excavation were completed. Sofia Committee created a separate commission lead by O Novytskyi to explore places of hole and underpasses, which were opened to understand the first priority steps needed to begin the research. It is noted that archaeological part was lead by Petro Kurinnyi, Valeria Kozlovska, Kateryna Melnyk-Antonovych, Mykhailo Rydnytskyi, Vasyl Lyaskoronskyi. Later, due to emigration of others researchers, excavation has been led by M. Lyaskoronskyi. He published the short summary in which the main results of works were shown, materials of which belonged to ХІХ century and construction (cellar) was dated back to XVII–XVIIІ centuries. O Novytskyi in his short note, which is stored in the archive of Sofia Committee, described main architectural elements of the cellar and the underpasses that lead to it. It is confirmed that Sofia Committee want to create a cover over the memorial for research and touristic purposes but was not granted with sufficient funds. Despite the absence of new excavations at the site existing results are interesting and important for modern researchers. Man wird Harald Müller, dem Herausgeber des vorliegenden, auf ein Kolloquium im Historischen Kolleg München (März 2015) zurückgehenden Sammelbandes wohl zustimmen müssen: Gegenpäpste galten (und gelten) als ,,finstere Bedrohungen der wahren Kirche mit hohem dramatischen Wert und Aktualisierungspotenzial“ (2). Dies mag mit dafür verantwortlich sein, dass in den letzten Jahren das Interesse an Gegenpäpsten neu erwacht ist. Müller selbst hat daran maßgeblichen Anteil. Seine profunden Kenntnisse auf dem Gebiet <?page nr="515"?>entfaltet er in einem einleitenden Kapitel (Autorität und Krise. Der Verlust der Eindeutigkeit und seine Folgen am Beispiel der mittelalterlichen Gegenpäpste – einleitende Gedanken, 1–18). Strukturelle und konflikttheoretische Ansätze greifen hier ineinander: Spaltung sei, so Müller, stets als Vervielfältigung, als Multiplikation von Ämtern und Strukturen zu begreifen. Im Konflikt um das Papstamt gehe es um Eindeutigkeit, sowohl auf der Wahrnehmungs- als auch auf der Handlungsebene, setzten doch Papstprätendenten alles daran, eindeutige Zustände durch eine Überwindung der Konkurrenz herzustellen. Dazu gehört retrospektiv auch die Vereindeutigung in der memoria und Geschichtsschreibung. Das macht den Umgang mit ,,Gegenpäpsten“ nicht unbedingt einfacher, sind sie doch in erheblichem Maße Produkt, ja sogar Konstrukt krisenbegleitender Fremdzuschreibungen.

The article presents the results of a questionnaire survey of the Southern Ukraine (Odessa, Mykolaiv, Kherson) regional centers’ residents — concerning self-esteem of their families welfare standards, their prospects about its improvement, and possible search for a better fate abroad. This research was carried out within the research project “Effective functioning and development of the regional socio-cultural environment in the context of decentralization as a pledge of Ukraine national security” (scientific project manager — Head of Sociology Sociological Cathedra of Petro Mohyla National University Iryna Meizys, timeframes for project implementation — 2017–2019). The survey revealed that a significant proportion of respondents assess their families' economic status and financial capabilities as critical, pointing to the limited ability or inability to sufficiently meet those needs that exceed current running costs. The results of the survey make it possible to evaluate the material status of regional centers residents (in a bigger or lesser extent) in the terminology of the scientific discourse of poverty by means of the categories “subjective poverty”, “relative poverty” and “deprivation” (restriction or complete deprivation). Moreover, for the most part, our respondents do not see any prospects for improving the economic situation in Ukraine in the near future: they don’t have confidence in the future, and therefore have a rather low estimate of the prospects for improving their own economic situation. The poll also showed the widespread emigration of the Southern Ukraine residents: more than half of respondents said that they were thinking about moving to a permanent place of residence in the “Western world”, that is associated in the mass consciousness of modern Ukrainians with wealth, high standards of pay, stability and prospects. In all cities of southern Ukraine, respondents' emigration / intentions still exceed the 50 percent limit. The results of the survey should also be used as indicators of social security for the functioning of the regional society. This is particularly relevant given the geopolitical challenges and threats that Ukraine is currently facing, including the Black Sea region, which is a region of strategic importance for Ukraine.

Resumen
ResumoOs recursos naturais, entre eles as rochas, são testemunhos da evolução natural da Terra, quando modificados pelo homem, transformam-se em um material que marca e registra a história e a cultura de um povo, permitindo resgatá-la por meio da análise de sua litologia. Ao longo dos séculos, os recursos naturais foram empregados para diversas finalidades, como na confecção dos utensílios primitivos e na confecção de armas (a partir de seixos lascados) no período pré-histórico; blocos estruturais em obras de engenharia da antiguidade (pontes, muralhas, dutos d´água, catedrais, entre outros); além de diversas obras de arquitetura contemporânea. Em construções mortuárias, as rochas também possuem uma ampla utilização. Utilizadas como bloco estrutural, tais como: a tumba de Newgrange na Irlanda, primeiro registro de utilização de rochas em câmaras mortuárias (3.100 a.c), nas pirâmides do Egito (2.600 a.c); nos túmulos comunitários em paredões rochosos de Petra (40 a 5 a.c), na Jordânia, e no Taj Mahal (1632 a 1653), na Índia; ou apenas utilizados como rochas de revestimentos, embelezando túmulos espalhados nos cemitérios. A presença dessas rochas, além de apresentarem um forte conteúdo cultural e social, manifestados no seu uso para a cantaria e a estatuária, frequentemente refletem a geodiversidade litológica regional. Essa geodiversidade e variabilidade são observados nos túmulos, esculturas e nos jazigos encontrados nos Cemitérios da Ordem Terceira do Carmo, inaugurado em 1836; em recinto coberto, da Ordem Terceira de São Francisco, inaugurado provavelmente em 1833; e no Cemitério Municipal do Quicumbi, inaugurado em 1898, todos localizados no município de São João del-Rei. A escolha destes cemitérios partiu da questão histórica e sociocultural, isto porque, na atualidade, predominam nos dois primeiros cemitérios túmulos de pessoas com maior poder aquisitivo e de representantes do clero. Jáo último cemitério, construído para a comunidade em geral. Desta forma, o levantamento e criação desse roteiro identificará como as questões históricas e socioculturais interferiram na escolha dos litotipos para a construção dos jazigos, assim como das esculturas, além de promover um trabalho associado a um geoturismo responsável e consciente, tomando-se como base a educação geoconservacionista. Natural resources and among them the rocks are testimonies of the natural evolution of the Earth, being an important record of the cultures that preceded us. Over the centuries, have been used for various purposes, such as in the making of primitive tools and weapons (from chipped pebbles) in the prehistoric period, building blocks in antiquity engineering works (bridges, walls, ducts moorhen, cathedrals) as well as several works of contemporary architecture. In mortuary buildings, the rocks also have a wide use. Used as a building block in the Newgrange tomb in Ireland, was the first rock using log in mortuaries (3.100 BC), the Pyramids of Egypt (2.600 BC), the Community tombs in the rocky of Petra (40-5 BC), Jordan, Taj Mahal (1632-1653), at the India, or just used as coating rock, embellishing graves scattered in cemeteries. The presences of these rocks, besides having a strong cultural and social content, as manifested in its use to song and statuary, often reflect regional lithological geodiversity. This geodiversity and variability are observed in the tombs and sculptures in deposits found in the of Carmo Third Order cemetery, opened in 1836 in a covered enclosure, the of San Francis Third Order cemetery, opened and probably in 1833 and the Quicumbi Municipal Cemetery opened in 1898, all located in the São João del-Rei Municipality of the choice of these cemeteries assumed the historical and cultural and social content issue because the first two cemeteries predominate tombs for people with purchasing power and representatives of the clergy, and the latter built for the community general. Thus, the survey and the creation of these routes will identify how historical, cultural and social issues interfered in the choice of rock types for the construction of deposits and sculptures, as well as promote responsible and conscious geoturismo based in the geoconservative education. NB: Artiklen er på dansk, resuméet på engelsk. Erik Petersen: Wulfstan’s Codex and Schumacher’s List. On the Oldest Record of Manuscripts in the Royal Library. It has hitherto been assumed that the earliest list of manuscripts in the Royal Library is the section of manuscripts in the catalogue preserved in the library’s archive as E 8: Catalogus librorum typis exaratorum, pariter ac Manuscriptorum, quibus, curante Petro Schu­machero, aucta est Regia Bibliotheca. A total of 82 manuscripts are recorded at the end (f. 17v-20r) of the Catalogus E 8, which was made by Willum Worm who signed and dated it on the 4th of January 1671at his accession as librarian to the Danish king, Christian V. Worm succeeded Peter Schumacher, perhaps better known as Griffenfeld, who act­ed as librarian to king Frederik III from 1663 to 1670 and to Christian V until Worm took over. The Catalogus E 8 has been known for long as ‘Schumacher’s catalogue’. Thus Ellen Jørgensen, the author of the Catalogus codicum Latinorum medii ævi Bib­liothecæ Regiæ Hafniensis (1926), referred to it as cat. Schumacheri, and stated, on its authority, that a given manuscript found in the Catalogus E 8 had been acquired by the library between 1663 and 1670. Others followed her example. The manuscript section of Catalogus E 8 was published by Harald Ilsøe in 1999 in his book on the history of the Royal Library’s holdings until ca. 1780 (Det kongelige Bibliotek i støbeskeen. Studier og samlinger til bestandens historie indtil ca. 1780, 1999, p. 574-581). However, the Catalogus E 8 is not the catalogue of Schumacher. It is the catalogue of Willum Worm. And the catalogue of Worm does not cover the entire period 1663 to the end of 1670, but only the latter part of it, i.e. the period from the beginning of 1666 to the end of 1670. In fact, Peter Schumacher made his own list, which has never received the atten­tion it deserves – if at all noticed, its contents have been misinterpreted. It is pre­served in the RL Archive as E 8 a. Schumacher’s list is neither dated nor signed. It contains records for more than a hundred printed books. It also contains a list of 45 manuscripts, several of which have dedications to king Frederik III. An analysis of the years of publication of the printed books and of the dedications in the manuscripts makes it possible to date Schumacher’s list in E 8 a to the end of 1665. The 45 manu­scripts thus represent the nucleus of the manuscript collection of the king’s growing library. Apparently it is exactly the aim and ambition of creating such a collection that Schumacher’s list reflects. It is important also because Worm’s list of 1671does not repeat entries of manuscripts on Schumacher’s list; in other words, the two lists of manuscripts supplement each other. Most of the manuscripts recorded on the list were contemporary, and many of them directly related to the king either by contents or by dedications by authors or donators. Whereas the printed books reflect an able awareness of what was going on in the intellectual centres of Europe, the manuscripts reveal a more limited horizon. Not a single manuscript on Schumacher’s list seems to have been acquired by pur­chase, neither on the European market nor in Denmark. There are, however, manuscripts of great importance on Schumacher’s list, amongst them the following medieval manuscripts (with my identifications of their present call numbers in the Old Royal Collection, Gammel Kongelig Samling or GKS): 4 Den Islandske Lovbog udgiffvet aff Kong Magnus Haagensøn. fol. = GKS 1154 2° 26 Descriptio Eccles. MSS. in 8°. anno 1237. = GKS 3375 8° Items 4 and 29 were produced in medieval Denmark. Items 36 and 39 were both very common in the late Middle Ages; none of them are ‘royal’ in any sense of the word, and may well have been found among the remnants of the old church somewhere in Denmark. The same is true of the most remarkable item on the list, the Descriptio Ecclesesiæ Romanæ cum omnibus suis ceremoniis, ritibus etc. with the incipit: Apollogus de ordine Romano, the famous codex of Wulfstan, produced just after the turn of the first millennium under the supervision of Wulfstan, bishop of Worcester and arch­bishop of York, and containing his autograph notes in Anglo-Saxon and Latin. Next to nothing has been known about its history in Denmark until now. It has, in fact, only been possible to state that it was in The Royal Library in 1786, when the Old Royal Collection was established. Due to Schumacher’s list we now know that it was in the king’s library already in 1665, and that it is likely to have been in Denmark long before then. As to the protestant king’s interest in a medieval book of the old church such as Wulfstan’s, a glimpse on the medieval manuscripts recorded in Worms’ Catalogus E 8 may be enlightening. The focus of collecting did not change or changed very little. Nos. 37, 47, 73, 78, 79, 80 are described as lawbooks, written in Danish or Old Norse. A few may be medieval, but they are not described in sufficient detail to be identified. The provenance of a single manuscript in Greek is unknown. The follow­ing are all in Latin: 2 Fundation paae biskop Byrges Capel i Lund 1518. = GKS 846 2° 11Evangelistæ in Membranâ. Probably = GKS 1347 4° (Ilsøe: GKS 12 2°, lost) 40 Justinus in Membranâ. = GKS 451 2° or GKS 452 2° (Ilsøe’s suggestions) 57 Bibliorum tomus II incipit a Iobo. = GKS 1310 4° 77 Notkirkes alterbog i gammel dage. = GKS 3453 8° Item 2 was produced in Lund, that is in medieval Denmark. Item 57 was produced in Italy, but belonged to the chapter of the cathedral of Lund in the later Middle Ages. If my identification is correct, item 11was produced in England, but it had migrated to Bergen in Norway in the Middle Ages. I am in doubt about the identity of item 40, but Iustinus was widely copied and read in the Middle Ages, even in Denmark. Item 77 is of particular interest in our context. It is a Latin manuale ecclesiasticum, and was found in the local church of Notmark on the island of Als in 1669 by king Frederik III himself. He visited the provincial church and required to take ‘the old monastic book in Latin’ as well as a copy in German of king Valdemar’s law book along to Copenhagen. His request was granted and the visit of the king recorded by the vicar in a Danish printed bible that remained in the church. The medieval books in the collection were not bought abroad because of their splen­dour or prestige, but inherited, received as gifts or gathered from places inside the king’s own realms. Thus the catalogues E 8 a and E 8 not only offer evidence of the presence of a given manuscript in the kings Library ante the end of 1665 or ante 1671. They also indicate that the manuscripts may well have had a much longer history in Denmark than hitherto known. Thus the list of Schumacher is not just a detail in the history of a library. It is also the mirror through which Wulfstan and his codex may become visible in the distant landscape of medieval Denmark.
