Texto completoOne of the initial control room capabilities to be demonstrated by iNET program is the ability to provide data displays in the control room that do not contain data dropouts. This concept is called PCM Backfill where PCM data is both transmitted via traditional SST and recorded onboard via an iNET compatible recorder. When data dropouts occur, data requests are made over the telemetry network to the recorder for the missing portions of the PCM data stream. The retrieved data is sent over the telemetry network to the backfill application and ultimately delivered to a pristine data display. The integration of traditional SST and the PCM Backfill capability provides both real-time safety of flight data side-by-side with pristine data suitable for advanced analysis.
Bondurant, Philip D. y Andrew Driesman. "Smart PCM Encoder". International Foundation for Telemetering, 1995. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/611601.
Texto completoIn this paper, a new concept in PCM telemetry encoding equipment is described. Existing "programmable" PCM encoders allow only simple changes in the functionality of the hardware, such as input gain, offset, and word formatting. More importantly, these encoders do not provide capability for "in-flight" processing of signals and in general have not taken advantage of existing hardware and software digital signal processing technology. In-flight processing of signals can provide a significant reduction in the required transmission bandwidth, allowing additional data that may not have otherwise been transmitted to be sent on the telemetry channel. A modular digital signal processor (DSP) based PCM encoder architecture is described that has a set of on-board processing algorithms configurable via a simple-to-use graphical user interface. Algorithms included are compression (lossy and lossless), Fourier transforms of various resolutions (typically followed by peak detection to provide a data rate reduction), extreme values (max, min, rms), time filtering, regression, trajectory prediction, and serial data stream processing. Custom algorithms can be developed and included as part of the suite of processing algorithms. The preprocessing algorithms exist as firmware on the DSPs and can accommodate as many different signals as the processing bandwidth of the DSP can handle. Typically one DSP can handle many input signals and different algorithms. The encoder is programmable via a standard RS-232 serial interface allowing the signal input configuration, telemetry frame layout, and on-board processing algorithms to be changed quickly.

Texto completoHow difficult is it to develop a pulse code modulation (PCM) stream data format? Specifically, given a size, in bits, and a set of parameter sample rates, how hard is it to find a mapping of the sample rates that fits into the frame size -- if one even exists? Using telemetry trees this paper will show that the number of possible mappings for a given set of parameters and sample rates grows exponentially in terms of the number of parameters. The problem can thus be stated in terms of finding a specific instance, or showing that no such instance exists, among an exponentially large number of potential mappings. Although not proof, this provides strong evidence that the PCM format design problem is NP-complete (meaning it is a member of nondeterministic polynomial space but not a member of deterministic polynomial space). That is, that the problem can not be solved in polynomial time and would take a computer years or centuries to solve relatively small instances of the problem. However, if the problem requirements are relaxed slightly, telemetry trees can be used to reduce the PCM formatting problem to linear time in terms of the number of parameters. This paper describes a technique that can provide an optimal and fully packed PCM format.

Texto completoAdvancing technology continually generates larger quantities of data at increasingly high transfer rates which fuels the need for instrumentation to take up the challenge of efficiently managing the collection of data. This defines the driving force behind the desire for increased channel capacity of PCM data formatters. By incorporating state-of-the-art Digital Signal Processing (DSP) technology coupled with high-performance Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA), Inter-Coastal Electronics has designed the IF-810, a PCM data formatter. The IF-810 allows eight channels of PCM data, one voice channel and an InterRange Instrumentation Group (IRIG)-B channel to be combined and formatted for recording onto the TEAC RX-800 series recorders using a Hi8 8mm video cassette as the recording media. During playback, the IF-810 clocks the PCM data out using a reconstructed version of the input clock. With this unique design, the PCM data and clock outputs are input directly to a decommutator which eliminates the need for costly bit-synchronizers. This paper discusses the integration of the DSP, FPGA and buffering techniques into a low-cost and efficient multi-channel PCM data formatter that accommodates high data rate inputs, all without the need of a bit-synchronizer for decommutation.
Wigfall, Glenn D. "SMART MUNITIONS PCM TELEMETRY SYSTEM". International Foundation for Telemetering, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/613392.
Texto completoThe last decade brought about the development of “smart” weapons and munitions that proved to be more efficient than conventional weapons based on their efficiency in the number of targets hit relative to the number hit using conventional weapons. The awakening of sensor-controlled, sensor-guided munitions technology has introduced a definitive need for telemetry instrumentation in developmental testing of this rapidly growing field. To satisfy the Army’s need for sensor-controlled, anti-tank munitions, several development programs are under way for the research and design of these systems. Telemetry has been a critical element in the development of these programs. From the program’s conception and through to its completion, the Armament, Research, Development, and Engineering Center-Telemetry Section has developed data acquisition systems to monitor the activity of such sensorcontrolled smart projectiles to support Army programs. This paper will discuss the development and use of a PCM telemetry system that has had tremendous success in use with these types of projectile programs in their sensor development and system integration stages. The application, albeit specific to these projectile programs, can be tailored to meet the needs of numerous test configurations within the Army or other organizations facing this need.

Texto completoThe Pulse Coded Modulation (PCM) Encoder Systems used in telemetry have gained enormous flexibility for various applications because the input data channels and frame sync codes are programmable via the EEPROMs or UVEPROMs. The firmware in the current PCM Encoder Systems can be readily tailored for a specific application to monitor numerous types of analog channels, as well as digital channels. However, the current PCM Encoder Systems require several types of strap options which dictate not only a limited choice of gains and offsets, but also a fixed choice of the premodulation filter characteristics. The brain of the 1000 PCM Encoder is the Digital Signal Processor (DSP) which eliminates the fixed premodulation filter characteristics via digital filter functions, and also eliminates strap options via general purpose microprocessor functions.

Texto completoVersatility is the keyword in modern airborne telemetry systems. Only a system with an inherent ability to be changed can be cost effective in an environment where requirements change as often and as rapidly as in todays missile and aircraft test instrumentation. This paper will describe a totally wireless, modular, PCM telemetry system. Using stored program format control (user programmable) and implemented with low power programmable logic devices, this new system can be altered with minimal effort and cost. Functional modules can be added or changed as program requirements evolve. Elastomeric connectors are used to achieve high density, wireless, high reliability interconnection between modules. This connection technique allows easy access to individual modules for repair or replacement without damaging substrates or components.

Texto completoThe advent of Bit Slice Processors and related architectures has produced numerous high performance PCM Data Simulators. Many of these fall into the category of stored program simulators, which give the user unlimited flexibility and power. These simulators allow the user to program almost any imaginable format, with combinations of subframes, subsubframes, and asynchronously embedded subframes. The drawback is that the user is forced to program the simulator using a very detailed machine level language which usually has no obvious relation to PCM frame formats. A new simulator architecture allows the user to describe the frame format to be simulated in familiar terms. This eliminates the need to learn yet another programming language or develop a Compiler. The user identifies common parameters such as frame length, subframe length, and where special words should be located. These special words can be unique sensor data words, a table of sensor data, ID counters, subframe slots and so on.

Texto completoPulse Code Modulation (PCM) Encoders used in Telemetry Instrumentation systems have traditionally been implemented using sequencer or state-machine based micro-architectures with distributed control and signal acquisition components. This architecture requires the use of many discrete electronic components and custom micro-code programming or state machine development for the control of the systems. The advent of relatively high-speed microcontrollers with embedded signal acquisition subsystems has brought about the ability to implement highly integrated PCM Encoder systems using fewer components and standardized programming methods. This paper will discuss sequencer based PCM encoders for background and then introduce the concept of Microcontroller Based PCM Encoders for Telemetry Instrumentation. Specific design examples will be introduced. Advantages and disadvantages of the two techniques will be discussed.

Texto completoIncidental Frequency Modulation (IFM) products in telemetry transmitters can be a significant cause of bit errors in received Pulse Code Modulation/Frequency Modulation (PCM/FM) telemetry data. Range Commanders Council (RCC) and other documents give little or no guidance as to acceptable levels of IFM for telemetry applications. The expected higher vibration levels of future high velocity missile systems means that IFM levels are likely to be higher than previously encountered. This paper presents measured data on Bit Error Rate (BER) versus IFM levels at given Signal to Noise Ratios (SNR’s) for PCM/FM telemetry systems. The information presented can be utilized with BER versus SNR plots in the Telemetry Applications Handbook, RCC Document 119, to determine the additional link margin required to minimize IFM effects on telemetry data quality.

The problem with using VCR’s to record pulse code modulated (PCM) digital data is that glitches are recorded in the serial data stream coincident with the video sync pulses. This problem can be solved by formating the PCM data stream and synchronizing the video sync pulses to the PCM data.

Texto completoA composite PCM/FM+FM/FM system combines the spectral efficiency of the analog system with the accuracy of a PCM system when needed for specific sensors and allows the direct transmission of binary computer words if necessary. A PCM/FM+FM/FM system combines the bit sequence with the modulated subcarriers at baseband and the resultant modulates the carrier. In the design of the composite system it is of importance to determine the impact of the subcarriers on the bit error rate of the bit sequence and to determine the degradation of the output signal-to-noise ratio of the subcarrier channels caused by the bit sequence.

Texto completoIn this thesis, the microstructure of organic photovoltaic APFO-3:PC61BM bulk-heterojunction blends was examined. Earlier studies have focused on the microstructure after spin coating. This thesis aims to give a better insight into microstructural degradation as the films are annealed above the glass transition temperature, Tg, and the mixture approaches thermodynamic equilibrium. Electro- and photoluminescence studies indicate that the polymer and PC61BM are intermixed on a scale shorter than the exciton diffusion length of 10 nm, even when annealed above Tg. The temperature stability of APFO-3:PC61BM was also investigated with respect to the molecular weight of the polymer. The photovoltaic performance of these blends was found to be stable up to temperatures approaching the glass transition temperature, especially if a high molecular-weight APFO-3 grade was used.
The crystallization of PC61BM was also investigated. Above Tg, PC61BM crystallization was found to commence, albeit slowly at temperatures close to Tg. At elevated temperatures instead, micrometer sized crystals were observed to form. It was also noted that illumination while annealing APFO-3:PC61BM thin films above Tg affected PC61BM crystallization, the origin of which is so far unclear although chemical degradation could be largely excluded.

Texto completoPolycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is a metabolic and endocrine disorder that is the most common cause of infertility. PCOS can manifest itself as a long and short term disability and is characterized by insulin resistance (IR), hyperandrogenism, anovulation, hyperinsulinaemia and polycystic ovaries. Our lack of understanding of this disorder and its long term effects has complicated the treatment of the disorder; yet, it is clear that PCOS involves the intricate interaction between genetics, environments and behaviors. To study this disease, scientists have used various animal models. Since the Drosophila model for PCOS has only been postulated,in this work, we determined whether starvation along with the addition of steroid hormones would induce a PCOS-like disorder in D. melanogaster after 24 hour exposure.
In women with PCOS, testosterone levels and the expression of the androgen receptor are elevated. In fruit flies, ecdysone (E) and its “active” form, 20-hydroxyecdysone (20E), are homologous to the human testosterone and 20-hydroxytestosterone, respectively. This hormone is required for circadian cycles, molting, and maturation in insects. More specifically, this hormone is also located in ovarian tissue and aids in follicular development. The receptor for ecdysone is the ecdysone receptor (EcR). In this work, we examined the expression of the ecdysone receptor (EcR) upon starvation for up to 24 hours by immunofluorescence microcopy. Using qRT-PCR, we determined the levels of expression of genes usually associated with inflammation. Ovarian dysfunction was examined by measuring the fecundity of the females. Starvation increases the expression of the EcR and pro-inflammatory gene expression and decreases fecundity, suggesting that Drosophila melanogaster is a potentially useful model organism in the study of PCOS.

Texto completoA study has been made of a smaller power station on behalf of Exencotech who is researching energy-recycling possibilities. Their station extracts energy from heated water which otherwise would have been discarded as a loss. The study has been conducted on a 100kW system with a high option of modularity which makes the system flexible and adjustable when installing. The study also treats a 5kW prototype and a modular version of the 100kW system up to 0,5MW. The application is designed to minimze the volume and weight of the system. It has also been analyzed ergonomically and in ways of its usability which has affected the design. To define appropriate solutions for the project several concepts has been conducted as well as evaluations of solutions. As a prestudy for the project other power stations has been looked at as well as control and surveillance systems. A concept has been developed where the energy cell module (the module extracting energy) is designed to give 50kW (initially, though optimization will heighten this), using 9m3 volume, this is used together with a water distribution module and a hydraulic module. As maintenance is meant to be easily performed, a special application has been developed which helps the procedure of access and extraction of desired parts whitout causing the operator too large ergonomical stress. The system is designed to be able to operate even when a part of it is shut down for repairs. The module has been constructed and dimensioned to withold the loads it would cause into the system. A graphic interface has also been designed to improve the usability and understanding of the system.

Texto completoMany engineers have tried to detect and correct erroneous data in telemetry communications. The best source selector can be used to combine data from two or more bit synchronizers to reduce frame error rates. An error-correcting code can be used as well. These techniques are absolutely helpful to obtain reliable telemetry data. However, some errors still remain and must be removed. This paper introduces the way to effectively merge multiple PCM files that are saved in different receiving sites, and shows nearly errorless data resulting from merging flight test data using a PC-based frame optimizer, which is a developed program.

Texto completoSince the 1970s PCM/FM has been the dominant modulation scheme used for RF telemetry. However more stringent spectrum availability as well as increasing data rates means that more advanced transmission methods are required to keep pace with industry demands. ARTM Tier-I and Tier-II are examples of how the PCM/FM link can be enhanced. However these techniques require a significant increase in the complexity of the receiver/detector for optimal recovery. This paper focuses on a quantitative approach to improving the rate and quality of data using existing PCM/FM links. In particular ACRA CONTROL and BAE SYSTEMS set themselves the goal of revisiting the pre-modulation filter, diversity combiner and bit-sync. By implementing programmable adaptive hardware, it was possible to explore the various tradeoffs offered by modifying pulse shapes and spectral occupancy, inclusion of forward error correction and smart source selection. This papers looks at the improvements achieved at each phase of the evaluation.
Kim, Jung Sup y Myung Jin Jang. "Implementation of A 30-Channel PCM Telemetry Encoder". International Foundation for Telemetering, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/604960.
Texto completoThe function of a PCM telemetry encoder, installed in moving vehicles such as automobiles, aircraft, missiles, and artillery projectiles, is to transform many physical variables, such as velocity, shock, temperature, vibration and pressure, into digital data. Also, the encoder is required to make a data frame composed of digital input signals and frame synchronous data. The framed data is supplied to the input of a transmitter. There are three critical considerations in developing a PCM telemetry encoder to be installed in an artillery projectile. The first is the performance consideration, such as sampling rate, data receiving rate and data transmission rate. The second is the size consideration due to the severely limited installation space in an artillery projectile and the last is the power consumption consideration due to limitations of the munition’s power supply. To meet these three considerations, the best alternative is a one-chip solution. Using a commercially available TMS320F2812 DSP chip, we have implemented a 30-channel PCM telemetry encoder to process randomized data frames, composed of 16-channel analog data, 14-channel digital data and 2 frame synchronization data per data frame, at 10Mbps transmission baud rate. This paper describes the structure of the 30-channel PCM telemetry encoder and its performance.
Berdugo, Albert. "Migrating Airborne Instrumentation Systems from PCM to Network". International Foundation for Telemetering, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/606172.
Texto completoThe majority of currently operating flight test programs around the world utilize PCM-based airborne instrumentation systems. Most instrumentation engineers are very comfortable with PCM-based data acquisition systems, and feel uncomfortable when talking about network implementations and the adoption of iNET. In order for these engineers to embrace this new technology, migrating from a PCM to network topology must be done in an evolutionary manner that provides for the preservation of capital investment while introducing new system concepts that enhance current instrumentation systems. This paper describes hardware components that enable instrumentation engineers to migrate their existing PCM-based instrumentation system to a network-based system. Several of these components are discussed to illustrate how they provide a controlled migration path to a network-based system. These components include time distribution, gateways, network data selectors, network switches, transmitters, transceivers, and recorders.
Law, Eugene L. "PERFORMANCE OF PCM/FM DURING FREQUENCY SELECTIVE FADING". International Foundation for Telemetering, 1995. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/608409.
Texto completoThis paper will discuss the performance of pulse code modulation (PCM)/frequency modulation (FM) during frequency selective fading. Frequency selective fading occurs when the attenuation in part of the frequency band of interest is much greater than in the rest of the band of interest. The frequency selective fading model used in this paper assumes that two paths with different delays exist between the transmitter and receiver (multipath). The two-path model was simulated in the laboratory and the effects of frequency selective fading on the radio frequency (RF) spectrum and on the waveforms at the output of the FM demodulator were measured. A mathematical model was also used to predict the effects of frequency selective fading. The predicted waveshapes are compared with the laboratory data. A simple demodulator which alleviates the effects of frequency selective fading on PCM/FM at moderate signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) will be described. This demodulator is created by detuning the telemetry receiver by a frequency equal to approximately one-half of the intermediate frequency (IF) bandwidth and using the receiver’s amplitude modulation (AM) detector output rather than the FM detector output. The performance of this offset AM demodulator will be compared with the performance of an FM demodulator. Frequency selective fades measured in real-world environments will be also presented.

Texto completoModem microcomputers are proving to be viable hosts for telemetry functions, including data simulators. A specialized high-performance hardware architecture for generating and processing simulator data can be implemented on an add-in card for the microcomputer. Support software implemented on the host provides a simple, high-quality human interface with a high degree of user programmability. Based on this strategy, the Physical Science Laboratory at New Mexico State University (PSL) is developing a Programmable PCM Data Simulator for microcomputer hosts. Specifications and hardware/software architectures for PSL’s Programmable PCM Data Simulator are discussed, as well as its interactive user interface.
Comeau, Charles P. y Joseph F. Fisher. "SYSTEM FOR MULTIPLEXING PCM DATA WITH VIDEO DATA". International Foundation for Telemetering, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/613450.
Texto completoWhen video signals are transmitted in a telemetry system it is usually necessary to simultaneously transmit other basic data such as temperature, pressure, audio, etc. In recent years these video/data telemetry systems have been implemented by transmitting the video through an analog link and the digital data through a parallel separate digital channel. Most recently it has become practical to transmit video signals by digital means, and this makes it possible to digitally multiplex the narrowband data with the wider band video. This results in a large reduction in system complexity since both data streams are transmitted over one channel rather than two. This paper describes a particular technical approach to multiplexing data and video which supports PCM data rates up to 60 kilobits per second. The approach has the advantage that PCM data is only embedded into the Video data as required. This results in the maximum utilization of the bandwidth of the transmission link. An airborne device has been developed which implements the video encoding and data multiplexing function. The paper describes the general multiplexing concept, the communication protocol, and the particular implementation. A description of the video encoding system, including the data multiplexing option, can be found in the “Draft Standard for Digital Transmission of Television Images” - RCC/TCG 209
