Resumen

This article presents a partial reconstruction of a ninth-century sacramentary-lectionary whose leaves were used as binding material for manuscripts of the library of Saint-Victor of Paris. While most of these fragments remain in situ, some have been detached; in all twelve Saint-Victor codices that served as host volumes are identified. A presentation of the fragments, including three not reported in Bischoff’s catalogue, presents the current condition of the fragments. An investigation on their content leads to a conjecture about their original order and to a hypothesis linking their origin to the monastery of Saint-Denis, according to the liturgical use and to the comparison with other sacramentaries.

Resumen

Apresentamos um estudo, no âmbito da História da Educação no medievo, sobre intelecto, livre arbítrio e virtudes, tendo como fonte a obra De sacramentis christianae fidei, de Hugo de Saint-Victor (1096-1141), um mestre medieval da Escola da Abadia de Saint-Victor, em Paris, no século XII. O objetivo é refletir sobre a importância desses aspectos para a formação humana, na perspectiva vitorina, em consonância com os acontecimentos históricos do período em tela. Essa relação é pertinente por compreendermos que os processos educativos estão vinculados à sua época. E que podem permitir, na perspectiva de Bloch (2001), que reflitamos, temporalmente, como educadores e pesquisadores sobre nossas ações e responsabilidades.

Der vorliegende Beitrag untersucht drei Bibliothekskataloge: Den durch Claude de Grandrue kompilierten Katalog des Klosters Saint-Victor de Paris (1513/14), den fiktionalen Katalog derselben Bibliothek im siebten Kapitel von François Rabelais’ Pantagruel (1532–1542) sowie Johann Fischarts Catalogus catalogorum perpetuo durabilis (1590). Er fragt nach den epistemologischen, institutionellen und sozialen Kontexten der jeweiligen Kataloge und in welchem Verhältnis zueinander die Texte stehen. The present contribution examines three library catalogues: the catalogue of the Abbey of Saint Victor compiled by Claude de Grandrue (1513/14), the fictional catalogue of that same library in the seventh chapter of François Rabelais’s Pantagruel (1532–1542) and Johann Fischart’s Catalogus catalogorum perpetuo durabilis (1590). It investigates the epistemological, institutional, and social contexts of each catalogue and the relationship between the texts.

Notre étude porte sur les expressions, les usages et les traces de cet épisode insurrectionnel : caractéristiques des combats dans les rues de la capitale, premiers récits, bilans et procès, stratégies d'héroïsation ou de dévalorisation, résurgences ponctuelles du souvenir, réactualisation manquée sous la Deuxième République, jusqu'à l'interprétation livrée par Victor Hugo dans <i>Les Misérables</i>. The bloody fights in cloître Saint-Merry (Paris, june 5" 1 and 6th, 1832) left uncertain marks. They hâve generally been perceived, by the contemporaries and afterwards, as obscure, embarrassing, absurd or useless. The paper deals with the expressions, uses and traces of this insurrectional moment : characteristics of the fights in Paris' streets, first relations, évaluations and trials, stratégies of heroes making or discrediting, brief reappearances, missed opportunities under the Second Republic, and finally the interprétation of Victor Hugo's <i>Les Misérables</i>.

This article presents the reader with the first Polish translation of the three sermons (Sermon VI–VIII) from the first part of Liber exceptionum by Richard of Saint Victor, one of the main representatives of the Victorine school operating in the 12th century in Saint Victor’s Abbey in Paris, which deals with presentation saint, and especially Apostols. The text is undoubtedly an example of medieval Christian hagiography. It is preceded by a preface, in which Richard is briefly introduced and in which the sermons are generally characterized as well as the corresponding imagine of saint itself. Translation has been provided with notes for more efficient reading.

Resumen

In late December 1585, the abbey of Saint-Victor, on the south-eastern-edge of Paris, played host to a group of English Catholics. The journal of Guillaume Cotin, the community’s librarian, tells us that the English arrived in the run-up to the feast of the martyrdom of Saint Thomas of Canterbury. The feast itself, on 29 December, was marked by a high mass sung in honour of the saint, with a sermon [service] in English. Several supplementary masses were also celebrated by English priests. Apparently, in order to attend these celebrations, ‘English Catholics came in very great multitude’.

Resumen

Début janvier 1637, le succès du Cid encouragea la librairie parisienne à publier au plus vite la pièce de Pierre Corneille. On connaissait la chronologie et l’accord passé entre les deux libraires Augustin Courbé et François Targa. Mais il restait à inscrire le circuit éditorial dans la topographie parisienne. Nos recherches ont permis d’établir un cadastre précis de l’édition du Cid au premier trimestre 1637. Le parcours commença à la Grande Chancellerie, située dans l’hôtel du chancelier Pierre Séguier, pour l’octroi du permis d’imprimer. Les deux libraires s’accordèrent ensuite sur le partage du privilège chez le notaire Charles Sadron, logeant à l’enseigne de l’Écrevisse rouge, rue de la Vieille-Draperie. Puis, chacun de leur côté, les éditeurs firent imprimer une moitié des feuilles. François Targa sollicita son frère Pierre, qui habitait avec lui la maison de la Cage, rue Saint-Victor. Augustin Courbé, locataire de la Cuillère de bois, rue Saint-Hilaire, travailla avec l’atelier de Nicolas Gasse situé tout près, à l’entrée de la Cour-des-Bœufs. Enfin les exemplaires furent débités au Palais de la Cité dans les boutiques des deux libraires, dont la place exacte et les dimensions sont enfin dévoilées. L’arpentage effectué restitue ainsi de manière vivante les faits et le réseau des acteurs dans l’espace du livre parisien.

The Augustinian Convent of Our Lady of Syon (ancestor of the present St. Augustine’s Priory Ealing) was founded at Paris in 1634. After some early difficulties it made its home in 1638–39 on a site in the rue des Fossés Saint-Victor (now rue du Cardinal Lemoine) on the eastern outskirts of the city where it was to remain, with its school, for more than two hundred years. Almost alone among English Catholic institutions founded in France and Flanders during the penal times it weathered the storm of the French Revolution and remained throughout much of the nineteenth century on the site it had formerly occupied. During the Revolution it was suppressed as a Religious house, its property was sequestrated, many treasures were stolen and some early records lost. The buildings in the rue des Fossés Saint-Victor were used for a time as a prison in which nuns from various convents, as well as laywomen, were confined. Conditions became easier after the fall of Robespierre in 1794 and some of the nuns’ property was provisionally restored to them, but it was again seized under the Directory and those nuns who had survived the earlier ordeal were evicted. Reluctantly, they made preparations to follow the example of many other English Catholic institutions in France and on French-held territory and seek refuge in England.

En se fondant sur deux études de cas, concernant les abbayes de Saint-Pierredes-Fossés (près de Paris) et de Saint-Victor à Marseille, on s’intéresse à la manière dont les moines du XIe siècle ont exploré et reconstruit la mémoire de leurs origines, en se lançant dans d’importantes campagnes d’écriture, mettant en oeuvre chartes et cartulaires, textes liturgiques, Vies de saints et recueils de miracles. Les documents relatifs à ces deux monastères permettent de contextualiser de manière assez précise ces campagnes d’écriture (souvent liées à des situations de crise) et de mettre en évi dence la complexité des modèles ecclésiologiques élaborés par les moines. Dans les deux cas étudiés, ceux-ci célébrèrent moins un saint fondateur ou un bienfaiteur insigne qui aurait été à l’origine de leur institution qu’une multiplicité de figures vénérables liées à la fondation, aux restaurations ou aux réformes du monastère, tout en incarnant différentes facettes de l’Ecclesia. Par ailleurs, les discours d’autorité forgés dans les ateliers d’écriture monastiques, auxquels participent les constructions relatives aux origines, paraissent moins avoir été destinés à légitimer des positions acquises qu’à instituer de véritables projets de société. Ce constat amène inévitablement l’historien à s’interroger sur l’institutionnalité médiévale, et plus précisément sur le rôle de l’écrit dans les processus d’institutionnalisation et de règlement des conflits en contexte seigneurial.

Resumen

Dans la deuxième partie du XIXe siècle la prostitution à Paris se concentre essentiellement dans le quartier Saint-Georges, plus précisément dans la partie appelée Breda-Street. Les dictionnaires d’argot et / ou de langue populaire de l’époque recensent un certain nombre de termes et d’expressions, plus particulièrement le Dictionnaire de la langue verte d’Alfred Delvau dans son édition de 1867. Même si le classement en différents argots proposé par l’auteur pose des problèmes (validité linguistique ?), il est possible d’utiliser ce dictionnaire comme point de départ d’une étude du vocabulaire de la prostitution des années 1850-1900, car certaines catégories proposées sont intéressantes. La presse des décennies de fin de siècle témoigne de l’utilisation de certains des termes notés par Alfred Delvau, tout comme le font des grands auteurs de la littérature, tels Gustave Flaubert, Victor Hugo et Émile Zola.

This research aims to give an analysis and assessment through the extraction of metricinformation from historical images and to experiment with its potentialities in the heritage fi eldwith the aim of valorising historical iconographical documentation. In particular the paperdeals with photogrammetry applied to historical images. A classifi cation and a state of the artof historical archives material considering their possible use in metric documentation and thussuitable for photogrammetry is performed. A photogrammetric workfl ow is proposed to processhistorical images and the maximum metric quality level reachable by the photogrammetricprocessing is investigated. Two case studies in Paris were chosen: the UNESCO HeritageTour Saint Jacques and the pavilions of Les Halles of the architect Victor Baltard. The twostudies represent different situations of heritage because the tower was transformed over timebut still exists and the pavilions were destroyed in 1971. Thus, it is possible to compare thedifferent results obtained from the implementation of the workfl ow to the two case studies.

Résumé Le 21 mai 1871, l'entrée à Paris des « Versaillais » marque le début d'un combat de barricades de huit jours. Dans la nuit du 23 au 24 mai 1871, la bibliothèque du Louvre brûlait. Victor Hugo reviendra plusieurs fois sur cet incendie dans L'Année Terrible. Incendier Paris, ville du livre, des lumières, du progrès et de la Révolution, revient à un suicide de l'humanité. Mais les coupables ne sont pas le « peuple » incendiaire, mais la « misère » et l'« ignorance ». Cependant, Victor Hugo sait que, depuis l'invention de l'imprimerie, il est certes possible de détruire des bibliothèques, mais pas la Bibliothèque, que donc tout incendie de bibliothèque ne peut avoir qu'une valeur symbolique, rituelle. Dans cette perspective, toute destruction de bibliothèque représente pour Hugo un avertissement... Ce qu'il craint, c'est une régression sur le plan de la construction collective, jamais achevée, de la bibliothèque de l'humanité, qu'il représente symboliquement par la subtile architecture d'une deuxième tour de Babel, dans laquelle chaque pierre est un élément constitutif, indispensable à la statique de l'édifice, tout en étant constamment recouverte par de nouvelles pierres, de nouvelles couches de savoir. L'histoire de la bibliothèque de l'humanité n'est rien d'autre qu'une métaphore de l'histoire du devenir de l'humanité en général, élargie jusqu'à une dimension cosmique. L'incendie de la bibliothèque dans Quatrevingt-treize que de multiples liens rattachent au motif récurrent de l'incendie dans le roman, ne tombe pas dans le cliché. Si ce n'est pas le vandalisme révolutionnaire mais l'ancien Régime lui-même qui met le feu à sa bibliothèque, signe du processus de civilisation, cependant lieu que la noblesse ne fréquente d'ailleurs plus depuis longtemps (comme le prouve l'épaisse couche de poussière qui la recouvre), cela indique aussi la part historique d'autodestruction dans la « destitution » de la noblesse féodale. Dans cet incendie de bibliothèque symbolique à plus d'un titre, un autre incendie de bibliothèque est inclus, « inséré » sous la forme d'une pars pro toto , à savoir le « massacre de la Saint-Barthélémy ». Les descriptions de bibliothèques chez Hugo montrent très nettement à quel point le motif de la destruction/l'incendie d'une bibliothèque est manipulable.

Resumen

The genealogy of the Capetian line copied on fol. 222r of Paris, Bibliothèque Mazarine, MS 2013, an historical compendium compiled at Saint-Denis, provides essential and tantalizing information for dating the volume, listing as it does just three sons of Louis VI (1081-1137, r. 1108-1137) and Adelaïde of Maurienne († 1154). To establish a terminus ante quem for the manuscript to complement the terminus post quem of ca. 1117 afforded by an incomplete papal regnal list at the beginning of the volume, this article attempts to determine the date of the next child’s arrival. Because much of the surviving evidence about the royal family is controversial and confusing, and because, over the years, historians have interpreted it in a variety of ways, the article reviews the sequence and birth dates of all the offspring. The fact that only a range of years between 1125 and 1128 can be established for the birth of the royal couple’s fourth son Robert of Dreux demonstrates the difficulty of reconstructing both twelfth-century chronology and the contours of medieval royal families. Still, reassessment of the evidence suggests reasons for favoring the two-year span 1125-1126 for Robert’s birth. More important, it enables Louis and Adelaïde’s branch of the Capetian family tree to be reconfigured, and the reputations and deeds of two of their offspring reassessed. A son named Hugues (invented by Orderic Vitalis) having been eliminated, three or more children (whose names are unknown) are shown to have been buried at Saint-Victor, whereas the fictional dates and deeds that have been attributed to Pierre of Courtenay are exposed and explained, as is the irrelevance to the actual person and actions of Robert of Dreux of fictive tales fabricated in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, some defamatory, about a disinherited royal claimant to the throne called Robert.

Resumen

Judging by the quantity of surviving texts – whether vitae or saints’ lives, libelli miraculorum or narratives of miracles for public reading in church, lectionaries or collections of liturgical readings, inventiones and translationes or accounts of relics found and later moved to a new location, popular receptivity to signs, wonders and miracles had reached a high point by the turn of the twelfth century. Whilst ordinary laypeople remained fascinated by supernatural phenomena, intellectuals were already beginning to challenge the preternatural in a process described by Chenu as the ‘desacralizing’ of nature. In the first book of his treatise, De Sanctis et eorum pignoribus (c.1120), Guibert, Abbot of Nogent, had contrasted the credulity of the faithful towards pseudo-miracles with the growing unease experienced by many scholars at inadequate written evidence for the authentication of relics. Andrew of Saint-Victor (d.1175), in an exposition on the literal interpretation of Scripture, found himself arguing for a natural explanation of events before any recourse to the miraculous. In the School of Pastoral Theology at Paris, Master Peter the Chanter (d.1197) vehemently criticized trial by ordeal as a flagrant tempting of God whereby a supposedly miraculous intervention was allowed to intrude into the regular legalistic operation of the courts. In the years immediately following the Chanter’s death, his former students, led by Pope Innocent III (1198–1216) and like-minded clerical associates, developed a significant agenda, emphasizing rationality and record keeping to sustain the faith of the Church within a new and more firmly pastoral context.
