Resumen
ABSTRACTObjective: Participatory action research (PAR) methodology is an effective tool in identifying and implementing risk-reduction interventions. It has been used extensively in occupational health research, but not, to our knowledge, in disaster research. A PAR framework was incorporated into the World Trade Center evacuation study, which was designed to identify the individual, organizational, and structural (environmental) factors that affected evacuation from the World Trade Center Towers 1 and 2 on September 11, 2001. PAR teams—comprising World Trade Center evacuees, study investigators, and expert consultants—worked collaboratively to develop a set of recommendations designed to facilitate evacuation from high-rise office buildings and reduce risk of injury among evacuees. Methods: Two PAR teams worked first separately and then collectively to identify data-driven strategies for improvement of high-rise building evacuation. Results: The teams identified interventions targeting individual, organizational, and structural (environmental) barriers to safe and rapid evacuation. Conclusions: PAR teams were effective in identifying numerous feasible and cost-effective strategies for improvement of high-rise emergency preparedness and evacuation. This approach may have utility in other workplace disaster prevention planning and response programs. (Disaster Med Public Health Preparedness. 2008;2:142–149)

Resumen
There is a large and growing number of participatory action research (PAR) programs, both with youth and with the general population. There is significant literature on evaluation methodology, including on making evaluations more participatory (a topic addressed elsewhere in this issue). However, rarely are the two linked: there are very few published works on evaluations of PAR programs or PAR evaluation methodology. The lack of focus on evaluation of PAR is particularly troubling given the shift towards foundation and federal funding of ‘science-based,’ or rigorously evaluated, interventions with youth. Evaluation is becoming increasingly necessary in establishing interventions as legitimate. If PAR is to progress along the path towards prominence and viability with respect to youth-oriented intervention, then evaluation of PAR is the map needed to follow that path.

Resumen
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to develop a methodology for evaluating the quality of an organization’s performance management system. Design/methodology/approach The paper presents a theoretical development based in extant literature, using a field study to illustrate the application of the methodology in assessing the quality of the performance management system of the case company. Findings The study presents performance management systems as a network of interconnected elements instead of elements that follow a lineal sequence. The more consistently aligned the elements of this network, the more likely it is to be able to influence behaviours and decisions in desirable ways. Research limitations/implications The development requires its use by practitioners and researchers assessing the performance management systems of organizations to assess further implications. It stresses the need to differentiate the purpose of performance management systems from the objectives of the organization. Practical implications The tentative application of the methodology suggests that it provides a helpful tool for practitioners and researchers to assess the functionality of systems in place and to identify opportunities for improvement. Originality/value The methodology overcomes the two limitations of previous studies. First, it uses a holistic approach and does not focus on specific tools; second, it assesses the quality of the system, not from future company results that might be influenced by other variables, but from the consistency and alignment of the elements of the system.

Resumen
This article presents a prison research model grounded in street participatory action research (Street PAR) methodology but programmatically facilitated in an Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program class. Street PAR’s nine tenets were adapted to a prison setting, and we demonstrate its promise with a brief case study of research projects at one prison location. This article also explores the challenges scholars and incarcerated persons as researchers may face in correctional facilities. Street PAR and Inside-Out can improve prison environments and successful transition to local communities as a function of equipping incarcerated persons with reading, writing, and analytic skill sets.

Resumen
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore a range of key deliberations with regards to adopting participatory action research (PAR) and privileged access interviewer (PAI) approaches and methodologies within research on substance use. Design/methodology/approach This paper is a reflective piece; it adopts a mixture of applied practice and theory considerations. These conceptualisations capture what are still relatively early understandings and uses of such methodologies, acquired across several decades of research and service provision experiences. The paper is structured around some of the sequences of the research process and as such provides a broad framework for such approaches. Findings PAR and PAI approaches utilise several key theoretical considerations. There are many critical issues associated with adopting these approaches, including those of ethics, funding, involvement, language, resources and support. Three key principle reasons (moral, political and research based) help explain why the authors should see more adoption of such approaches in substance use-related research. Research limitations/implications This paper represents authors’ views which are by their nature very subjective. Practical implications Implementation of the key considerations highlighted within this paper can lead to an active adoption of PAR and PAI methodologies within alcohol and drug research. Increasing the use of such methodologies will allow commissioners, researchers and service providers to develop a more nuanced understanding of the experiences of and responses to alcohol and drug use. Originality/value This paper captures critical conversations at a time of increased calls for service user involvement across all aspects of alcohol and other drug provision, including evaluation and research

Resumen
Participatory Action Research (PAR) may be conceived of as a politic or an epistemology rather than a rigid methodology. If this is the case, how can PAR inform other qualitative methodologies? How can qualitative researchers adopt the spirit of PAR without doing PAR work itself? In this work, I seek to explore these questions by reviewing how PAR can guide my future dissertation work on the productive effects of the obesity epidemic. I examine how I might base my research in the ethics and politics of social justice and yet also remain open to and accountable for the ways in which my choice of methods reflects what can be seen as the colonizing approach of traditional social science.

There is an increasing trend to consider the processes of an organization as one of its highly valuable assets. Processes are the reusable assets of an organization which define the procedures of routine working for accomplishing its goals. The software industry has the potential to become one of the most internationally dispersed high-tech industry. With growing importance of software and services sector, standardization of processes is also becoming crucial to maintain credibility in the market. Software development processes follow a lifecycle that is very similar to the software development lifecycle. Similarly, multiple phases of a process development lifecycle follow an iterative/incremental approach that leads to continuous process improvement. This incremental approach calls for a refinement based strategy to develop, execute and maintain software development processes. This thesis develops a conceptual foundation for refinement based development of software processes keeping in view the precise requirements for each individual phase of process development lifecycle. It exploits model driven engineering to present a multi-metamodel framework for the development of software processes, where each metamodel corresponds to a different phase of a process. A process undergoes a series of refinements till it is enriched with execution capabilities. Keeping in view the need to comply with the adopted standards, the architecture of process modeling approach exploits the concept of abstraction. This mechanism also caters for special circumstances where a software enterprise needs to follow multiple process standards for the same project. On the basis of the insights gained from the examination of contemporary offerings in this domain, the proposed process modeling framework tends to foster an architecture that is developed around the concepts of ``design by contract" and ``design for reuse". This allows to develop a process model that is modular in structure and guarantees the correctness of interactions between the constituent activities. Separation of concerns being the motivation, data-flow within a process is handled at a different abstraction level than the control-flow. Conformance between these levels allows to offer a bi-layered architecture that handles the flow of data through an underlying event management system. An assessment of the capabilities of the proposed approach is provided through a comprehensive patterns-based analysis, which allows a direct comparison of its functionality with other process modeling approaches

This thesis presents DISCIPLE, a system illustrating a theory and a methodology for learning expert knowledge. DISCIPLE integrates a learning system and an empty expert system, both using the same knowledge base. It is provided with an initial domain theory and learns problem solving rules from the problem solving steps received from its expert user, during interactive problem solving sessions. In this way, DISCIPLE evolves from a helpful assistant in problem solving to a genuine expert. The problem solving method of DISCIPLE combines problem reduction, problem solving by constraints, and problem solving by analogy. The learning method of DISCIPLE depends of its knowledge about the problem solving step (the example) from which it learns. In the context of a complete theory about the example, DISCIPLE uses explanation based learning to improve its performance. In the context of a weak theory about the example, it synergistically combines explanation - based learning, learning by analogy, and empirical learning, developing its competence. In the context of an incomplete theory about the example, DISCIPLE learns by Combining the above mentioned methods, improving both its competence and performance

Most innovative applications having robotic capabilities like self-driving cars are developed from scratch with little reuse of design or code artifacts from previous similar projects. As a result, work at times is duplicated adding time and economic costs. Absence of integrated tools is the real barrier that exists between early adopters of standardization efforts and early majority of research and industrial community. These software intensive systems are composed of distributed, heterogeneous software components interacting in a highly dynamic, uncertain environment. However, no significant systematic software development process is followed in robotics research. The process of developing robotic software frameworks and tools for designing robotic architectures is expensive both in terms of time and effort, and absence of systematic approach may result in ad hoc designs that are not flexible and reusable. Making architecture meta-framework a point of conformance opens new possibilities for interoperability and knowledge sharing in the architecture and framework communities. We tried to make a step in this direction by proposing a common model and by providing a systematic methodological approach that helps in specifying different aspects of software architecture development and their interplay in a framework

Complex physical phenomena can be numerically simulated by mathematical techniques. Usually, these techniques are based on discretization of partial differential equations that govern these phenomena. Hence, these simulations enable the solution of large-scale systems. The parallelization of algorithms of numerical simulation, i.e., their adaptation to parallel processing architectures, is an aim to reach in order to hinder exorbitant execution times. The parallelism has been imposed at the level of processor architectures and graphics cards are now used for purposes of general calculation, also known as "General- Purpose GPU". The clear benefit is the excellent performance/price ratio. This thesis addresses the design of high-performance applications for simulation of electrical machines. We provide a methodology based on Model Driven Engineering (MDE) to model an application and its execution architecture in order to generate OpenCL code. Our goal is to assist specialists in algorithms of numerical simulations to create a code that runs efficiently on GPGPU architectures. To ensure this, we offer a compilation model chain that takes into account several aspects of the OpenCL programming model. In addition, we provide model transformations that analyze some levels of optimizations based on the characteristics of the architecture. As an experimental validation, the methodology is applied to the creation of an application that solves a linear system resulting from the Finite Element Method (FEM). In this case, we show, among other things, the ability of the methodology of scaling by a simple modification of the number of available GPU devices

-)-Spongidepsin is a cyclodepsipeptide isolated from the marine sponge Spongia sp. This compound exhibitscytotoxic and antiproliferative activities against several cancer cell lines. Until now, five total syntheses and two formal ones have already been reported, all of them including a disconnection of (-)-spongidepsin into three fragments: a carboxylic acid (C1-C5), a bis-homoallylic alcohol (C6-C13) and N-methyl-phenylalanine. Our objective was to develop a flexible, short and scalable synthesis of (-)-spongidepsin that could be used for further biological studies and for the preparation of analogs. The synthesis of the acid fragment was achieved according to reported procedure. To access the C6-C13 fragment, an unprecedented enantioselective nickel-catalyzed homoallylation of aldehydes with dienes was developed. The reaction was performed using a combination of NiCl2 with enantio enriched phosphoramidites derived from BINOL in the presence of a hydrogen donor, Et2Zn and a 1,3-diene. A range of aromatic, aliphatic and α,β-unsaturated aldehydes were transformed into the corresponding bis-homoallylic alcohols with moderate to good yields and enantioselectivity. The method was successfully applied to the synthesis of C6-C13 fragment of (-)-spongidepsin

To meet the vehicle fleet-wide average CO2 targets, the stringent pollutant emissions standards, and the clients’ new demands, the automakers realized the inevitable need to offer more hybrid and electric powertrains. Designing a hybrid powertrain remains however a complex task. It is an intricate system involving numerous variables that are spread over different levels: architecture, component technologies, sizing, and control. The industry lacks frameworks or tools that help in exploring the entire design space and in finding the global optimal solution on all these levels. This thesis proposes a systematic methodology that tries to answer a part of this need. Starting from a set of chosen components, the methodology automatically generates all the possible graphs of architectures using constraint-programming techniques. A tailored representation is developed to picture these graphs. The gearbox elements (clutches, synchronizer units) are represented with a level of details appropriate to generate the new-trend dedicated hybrid gearboxes, without making the problem too complex. The graphs are then transformed into other types of representation: 0ABC Table (describing the mechanical connections between the components), Modes Table (describing the available modes in the architectures) and Modes Table + (describing for each available mode the global efficiency and ratio of the power flow between all the components). Based on these representations, the architectures are filtered and the most promising ones are selected. They are automatically assessed and optimized using a general hybrid model specifically developed to calculate the performance and fuel consumption of all the generated architectures. This model is inserted inside a bi-level optimization process: Genetic Algorithm GA is used on the sizing and components level, while Dynamic Programming DP is used on the control level. A case study is performed and the capability of the methodology is proven. It succeeded in automatically generating all the graphs of possible architectures, and filtering dismissed architectures that were then proven not efficient. It also selected the most promising architectures for optimization. The results show that the proposed methodology succeeded in finding an architecture better than the ones proposed without the methodology (consumption about 5% lower)

Resumen
Analysis of non-conviction based asset forfeiture laws, policies and court decisions leads to a conclusion that the fundamental human right to property is violated on a systemic scale – standards of proof fall below standard of preponderance of evidence established by current Criminal Law, leading to confiscation of assets without a proof of true criminal origin. Meanwhile, the proof of the criminal origin of assets in most cases is neither linked to the existence of a predicate crime, nor to the traceability of assets from such crime. De facto, in most cases the only sufficient ground for asset forfeiture is a transactional activity match to suspicious transaction methodology by FIU – the lowest possible level of standard of proof, not reaching even the standards of reasonable suspicion or probable cause. Moreover, it is made difficult to prove the legal origin of the property, restricting admission of evidence of legality, as well as presuming “that there should be no difficulty in proving legitimate origin”, regardless of the asset size, transaction history and objective capabilities of the owner.

Resumen
Federated Learning allows training of data stored in distributed devices without the need for centralizing training-data, thereby maintaining data-privacy. Addressing the ability to handle data heterogeneity (non-identical and independent distribution or non-IID) is a key enabler for the wider deployment of Federated Learning. In this paper, we propose a novel Divide-andConquer training methodology that enables the use of the popular FedAvg aggregation algorithm by over-coming the acknowledged FedAvg limitations in non-IID environments. We propose a novel use of Cosine-distance based Weight Divergence metric to determine the exact point where a Deep Learning network can be divided into class-agnostic initial layers and class-specific deep layers for performing a Divide and Conquer training. We show that the methodology achieves trained-model accuracy at-par with (and in certain cases exceeding) the numbers achieved by state-of-the-art algorithms like FedProx, FedMA, etc. Also, we show that this methodology leads to compute and/or bandwidth optimizations under certain documented conditions.

<p>Bridge management in Portugal had a remarkable development during the larger part of the last two decades. This paper intends to present an historical review of the situation before and after the Entre-os-Rios accident, a tragedy that triggered a modern approach to bridge management in Portugal. Nowadays the country is on par with worldwide best practices, supported by a system developed by Betar and adopted by all major stakeholders. Building on the idea that most BMS principles can be applied to other asset types in a road or network and the current lack of tools for managing those assets, the paper proposes a methodology for implementing GOA® to new types of assets, presenting some challenges that may arise. Following the implementation to different assets, the paper also discusses a model for integrating those different sets of assets into a coherent and effective management strategy.</p>

Resumen
"During teaching practicum student teachers are expected to acquire major pedagogical skills that have to do with classroom management; organisation; self-criticism; leadership; teaching; testing and assessing between themselves. Evidence of all activities of a student-teacher during teaching practicum is usually contained in a portfolio of evidence which is submitted to the faculty at the end of the program. At the Central University of Technology, this portfolio has always been paper-based. The aim of this project is to reflect on the use of e-portfolios during teaching practicum as a replacement for paper-based portfolios. The project used Participatory Action Research (PAR) as a research methodology. Workshops, interviews, and observations were used as data-gathering instruments. Internal stakeholders took part in the project and included student teachers and lecturers, and the e-learning center at the Central University of Technology. This report provided an overview of the entire project, including the planning phase results. Thematic analysis arrived at teacher training institutions must adopt e-portfolios as a reflective tool to enhance students learning."

Vainovski-Mihai, Irina. "GIVING PRECEDENCE TO COMMON POINTS: THE LIMITS OF THE OTHERNESS IN FETHULLAH GÜLEN’S DIALOGIC METHODOLOGY FOR INTERFAITH ENCOUNTERS". En Muslim World in Transition: Contributions of the Gülen Movement. Leeds Metropolitan University Press, 2007. http://dx.doi.org/10.55207/zvgs8407.

Texto completo
Resumen
This paper examines Fethullah Gülen’s teaching on interfaith encounters highlighting his dialogic methodology proposed for a globalised world in which Samuel Huntington’s idea of the ‘clash of civilisations’ (Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of World Order, 1997) is still prominent. This idea, concludes Gülen, stems from the lack of trust in the religion of the “Other” and, rather often than not, from easily passing over the common points. According to Gülen, dialogue is not a superfluous endeavour, but an imperative (“Dialogue is a must”) and it should start by “Giving precedence to common points”. Gülen holds that the tendency toward factionalism exists within human nature. A meaningful and nonetheless necessary goal, he says, should be to make this tendency non-threatening and even beneficial. To fully appreciate the significance of Gülen’s accomplishments, one must understand the perspec- tive from which he approaches the subject of interfaith dialogue. Based on his thinking as noted above, the purpose of this paper is to set out in some detail the way in which this re- nowned Islamic thinker limits the “domain” of the Otherness (Homi Bhabha, The Location of Culture, 2004; Nation and Narration, 1990) to make dialogue possible through overcom- ing both Orientalism (Edward Said, Orientalism, 1978) and Occidentalism (Ian Buruma and Avishai Margalit, Occidentalism: the West in the Eyes of its Enemies, 2004). Challenging the discourse of conflict and focusing on common points may be an important strategy when mutual suspicions are still prevalent and when the field of postcolonial studies stand witness to conflicting processes of refraction (Patricia Crone, Medieval Islamic Political Thought, 2005; Amin Maalouf, Les Croisades vues par les Arabes, 1986). Those who act according to what they have seen are not as successful as those who act according to what they know. Those who act according to what they know are not as successful as those who act according to their conscience. (Gülen 2005:106) This article aims to explore Fethullah Gülen’s teaching on interfaith encounters highlight- ing his dialogic methodology proposed to a globalized world in which models and theories of clashes are still prominent. These theories, concludes Gülen, stem from the lack of trust in the religion of the “Other” and, rather often than not, from easily passing over the com- mon points. To fully appreciate the significance of Gülen’s accomplishments and the challenges he is facing, one must understand the perspective from which he approaches the subject of interfaith dialogue. Based on the above-mentioned landmarks of his viewpoints regarding the representation constructs, the purpose of my paper is to investigate the way in which this renowned Islamic thinker limits the “domain” of the Otherness or dilutes many of the apparently instituted boundaries. My paper starts from the assumption that recognizing the Other on common grounds is a prerequisite of dialogue. The first section of the essay focuses on conceptual frameworks of defining the “relevant” alterity (Orientalism, Balkanism, Occidentalism) and theories of con- flict (models of clashes, competing meta-narratives). The second section looks into identity markers expressed or implied by Sufi thinkers (Al-Ghazali, Rumi, Nursi). The third section discusses Gülen’s awareness with the Other and, consequently (as detailed in the fourth sec- tion) his identification of common grounds for dialogue. To achieve the aim of my study, throughout all the four sections, Gülen will be presented in a textual exchange of ideas with other thinkers and authors.

Resumen
Aim/Purpose: This paper introduces DigLit Score, an indicator of the extent to which educational institutions identify, assess, and amplify student digital literacy. Background: Digital literacy has garnered considerable attention of late among scholars, leaders, and journalists. Nonetheless, institutions of higher education have been slow to define, assess, and amplify digital literacy on par with how reading, writing, and arithmetic are addressed. Methodology: The dimensionality of DigLit Score – define, assess, amplify, assess – is demonstrated via two case studies. Contribution: A measure of digital literacy offers university leaders and policy makers a means to monitor its diffusion. Findings: Only one of the institutions was found to have a holistic approach to advancing digital literacy. Recommendations for Practitioners: Practitioners should use DigLit Score to benchmark advancement of digital literacy in higher education. Recommendation for Researchers: Researchers should refine DigLit Score and expand its application within and beyond higher education. Impact on Society: DigLit Score represents an important first step in the direction of providing an important benchmark for higher education. Future Research: Future research will refine DigLit Score and broaden its application within and beyond higher education.

Resumen
There have allways been old persons, but their number has unprecedentedly grown and it is expected to overtake any other age group in contemporary developed societies. Instead of taking this process as a success of mankind, ageism grows on a par with ageing. It is well documented how standard educational models fail to correct implicit ageistic stereotypes, thus new emerging theoretical models such as generational intelligence and identity in old age put forward experiential methodologies designed to educate both explicit and implicit ageistic stereotypes. Both theoretical models incorporate the subjective first-person perspective on ageing, which complements the standard university curriculum for ageing-related professsionals in health, social or educational sectors. The practical implementation of these educational models involve experiential methodologies such as life stories. A crucial educational element in the practical success of this methodology lies in understanding intergenerational education not only as a gathering of generations, but as the intentional production and evaluation of educational ends. The paper exemplifies these methodologies and contrasts their success in dealing with the complexities involved in educating against explicit and implicit agesitic stereotypes in intergenerational relations. Therefore, the key to intergenerationality lies less in its "generational" element as in its "inter" element.

<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">Anti-pollution masks have been experiencing a noteworthy importance in protecting people from hazardous health effects imparted by pollution gases. Incorporating elements with good adsorption properties in mask could enhance the filtration of air in a fine quality. Activated carbon has been well acknowledged in terms of evincing adequate adsorption properties. This peculiar property of activated carbon made it to be appraised where air filtration comes into light. This work deals with a novel methodology for measurement study on the pollutant gas adsorption effect of activated carbon particle pellets incorporated in the protective facial mask for better adsorption of main pollutant gases utilizing recycled wood wastes. The resulted mask is up to the par and adsorption capability is well appreciated enough to resist the passage of dust particles through nostrils. Easily available and scraped industrial wood waste materials were utilized to synthesize activated carbon. This was characterized by fixed carbon percentage, bulk density and scanning electron microscopic morphology study. The effectiveness of adsorption of gases like NOx, CO and CO2 was analysed using AVL gas analyser.</div></div>

"Extracting and Tagging Unstructured Citation of a Hebrew Religious Document". En InSITE 2019: Informing Science + IT Education Conferences: Jerusalem. Informing Science Institute, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.28945/4345.

Texto completo
Resumen
Aim/Purpose: Finding and tagging citation on an ancient Hebrew religious document. These documents have no structured citations and have no bibliography. Background: We look for common patterns within Hebrew religious texts. Methodology: We developed a method that goes over the texts and extracts sentences con-taining the names of three famous authors. Within these sentences we find common ways of addressing those three authors and with these patterns we find references to various other authors. Contribution: This type of text is rich in citations and references to authors, but because there is no structure of references it is very difficult for a computer to automatically identify the references. We hope that with the method we have developed it will be easier for a computer to identify references and even turn them into hyper-links. Findings: We have provided an algorithm to solve the problem of non-structured cita-tions in an old Hebrew plain text. The algorithm definitely was able to find many citations but it has missed out some types of citations. Impact on Society: When the computer recognizes references, it will be able to build (at least par-tially) a bibliography that currently does not exist in such texts at all. Over time, OCR scans more and more ancient texts. This method can make people's access and understanding much. Future Research: After we identify the references, we plan to automatically create a bibliography for these texts and even transform those references into hyperlinks.

Resumen
This Emerging Evidence Report shares evidence of how, for whom, and under what circumstances, Participatory Action Research (PAR) leads to innovative actions. A rapid realist review was undertaken to develop programme theories that explain how PAR generates innovation. The methodology included peer-reviewed and grey literature and moments of engagement with programme staff, such that their input supported the development and refinement of three resulting initial programme theories (IPTs) that we present in this report. Across all three IPTs, safe relational space, group facilitation, and the abilities of facilitators, are essential context and intervention components through which PAR can generate innovation. Implications from the three IPTs for evaluation design of the CLARISSA programme are identified and discussed. The report finishes with opportunities for the CLARISSA programme to start building an evidence base of how PAR works as an intervention modality, such as evidencing group-level conscientisation, the influence of intersecting inequalities, and influence of diverse perspectives coming together in a PAR process.
