Resumen
The University of York provided the venue for this highly successful collaboration between the Biochemical Society and The Physiological Society, with over 800 attendees enjoying ten colloquia on subjects relevant to both societies. The meeting dinner was held at the National Railway Museum in York, which holds the award European Museum of the Year 2001. Diners were treated to a fabulous meal in the austere company of some of the country's finest locomotives, including the Mallard (pictured above), Evening Star, a reproduction of Stephenson's Rocket and Eurostar. New at the museum is the first ever Bullet train to be displayed outside of Japan. The report below is only a snapshot of what went on at the York Meeting. For papers from the speakers, take a look at Biochemical Society Transactions 30 (2) to be published in May.

Resumen
In August, 1968 nearly 3000 geologists from 91 countries gathered in Prague for the XXIIIrd International Geological Congress. Geology was in a state of major transformation and the Congress was the opportunity for the nascent International Union of Geological Sciences to involve the world geological community. But a brutal invasion of Czechoslovakia by its Communist allies frustrated all plans. Over 500 papers, more than 50 field trips, dozens of colloquia, meetings of affiliated societies etc. were canceled. Thousands of geologists who might have disseminated a uniquely global science to the classrooms and boardrooms of 91 countries's, were scattered by the winds of war. In rump sessions within the dying Congress and immediately after, a handful of West bloc geologists, committed agents of the new developments, struggled to pick up the pieces. The IUGS had to wait four years for another plenary session with the world geological community.

Resumen
Introduction to the Thematic SectionThe images of the borders of civilizations is the main topic of the thematic section of this issue of Colloquia Humanistica. In the call for papers it was emphasised, that this issue is particularly important, because the notion of civilization is strictly related to the issue of borders since it would became meaningless without the opposition to another civilization, or the lack of it. The juxtaposition between the notion of civilization and its different antinomies seems easier to display when seen from its centre, however the shape of its border is not always clear, even if it has a foundation in clear geographical or political divisions. Thus, this border can be represented as a linear frontier between a civilized state and barbaric lands, or as a borderland which encompasses some kind of fluent transition. The civilization border can be also represented in a macro scale, shaping geographic divisions of the continents (as it was in the case of the Balkans), but its depiction can also concern the micro scale, for example the difference between an urban and a natural landscape. The notion is even broader, because it is not only treated in the context of space but also social behaviours and their evolution (which is bound with notion of the progress since the Enlightenment). The question establishing the difference between the civilized and the uncivilized is still shaping the identity of modern societies, and thus it is worth attention.

This papers aims to determine the actual time when Min colloquial readings broke off from Old Chinese. There are five common vocabulary words in modern colloquial Min that are found in ancient texts of the Han time. This discovery reinforces the phonological arguments made in previous studies, namely, that the Min colloquial readings were directly derived from Old Chinese during the transition period from the Western Han to the Eastern Han.

From time to time, the annual Language Testing Research Colloquium (LTRC) publishes its papers. Kunnan, his contributors, and Erlbaum are to be commended for a rich, well edited, and thematically unified offering. Some wise decisions were made: author-provided abstracts, references following each paper, author-provided annotated bibliographies, and a rich index. This is more than a collection of conference papers. It is a book in its own right with the potential to become a textbook on language test validation.

Resumen
Background and PurposeFamily care management is a colloquial concept that is widely applied to health and social care worldwide. Despite that the concept has been in use in a variety of contexts for decades, a substantial number of scientific papers apply it with seemingly little consistency. In this study, we therefore report a concept analysis of family care management within a chronic-conditions context from the nursing perspective.MethodsA review of recent nursing and health-related literature covering the years 2000–2020 was performed on the concepts of family care, family nursing, family management, and care management. Nineteen studies were extracted for this analysis. Utilizing the Walker and Avant concept-analysis strategy, we defined attributes and analyzed the antecedents and their consequences.ResultsThe concept is defined from the perspective of health professionals. Five key attributes of family care management were identified: supervising situations, providing guidance, creating partnerships, a philosophical foundation, and a management style. Antecedents to the conductance of family care management included chronic health status, demographic and socioeconomic factors, and shortage of resources. The outcome of family care management was then described with respect to both positive and negative aspects.Implication for PracticeFamily care management is a highly abstract concept. We described two sub-concepts in need of clarification, including dynamic management behavior and a static management frame. Without a clear understanding of family care management, the concept is at risk of being relegated to a vague colloquial expression. Developing a theory of family care management might position the concept in a theoretical context, and could provide health providers with a point of reference for meaningful family care management strategies within their practices.

Resumen
This paper deals with the Upper Sorbian aspect categories. While the traditional inflectional opposition imperfect vs. aorist is still widely used in the standard variety, it has almost disappeared from the colloquial variety used in the Catholic area of Upper Lusatia in Eastern Germany. By contrast, the derivational opposition of perfectivity formally persists in this area but has undergone some changes which are very specific to this variety. In particular, this aspect opposition, expressed by means of prefixes and suffixes has been radically restructured, such that its functional domain has shifted from grammatical aspect to grammatical telicity. It is argued that the starting point of this change is to be sought in an identification of the Sorbian aspect-sensitive grammatical prefixes with the German prefixes which mainly express telicity in processes of word formation. Special usages dealt with in this study are, on the one hand, the expression of habituality through (formally) imperfective verbs and, surprisingly, the expression of ongoing telic processes, but also of the analytical future, by means of their perfective correlates, on the other.

Resumen
This paper will present an analysis of male interactional humour in Spanish conversation. Humour can appear in such conversations as a strategy to show (im)politeness between participants in the interaction. Focussing in particular on politeness strategies, we will seek to identify the different types of humour that arise in conversations between men. To this end, we will draw on Brown and Levinson’s theory of politeness ([1978] 1987: 213), which lists a number of strategies that aim to produce politeness and, at the same time, calculates the estimated risk of losing face that arises from an individual’s conversational behaviour. In the analysis we will also consider Spencer-Oatey’s (2000, 2007) proposal of a set of factors that can affect rapport management strategies. Our aim is to show that humour as expressed between men in conversational utterances, involves conversational strategies that are used to elicit respect for both listener and speaker, or to save the negative and positive face of these, according to politeness criteria. To this end, the VALESCO.HUMOR corpus is used, which comprises 148 ironic-humorous sequences extracted from 67 colloquial conversations.

Resumen
This paper reports on the analysis of humor negotiation in Spanish, using a database of 148 humorous sequences drawn from 67 colloquial conversations of the VALESCO.HUMOR corpus (accessible at www.observahumor.com; cf. Ruiz-Gurillo, 2021; 2022). To this end, three variables were addressed. First, following Martin et al. (2003), the style adopted by the speaker in their turn was analyzed as affiliative, aggressive, self-defeating or self-enhancing. Affiliative and aggressive styles predominate in the data, whereas self-defeating and self-enhancing styles are underrepresented. Second, we asked how participants are seen to evaluate the verbal behavior within sequences in terms of politeness, mock impoliteness, impoliteness and non-politeness (Sinkeviciute, 2019). Finally, an assessment was made of each sequence regarding how it could be understood as creating intimacy (endogroup sequence) or as a form of confrontation (confrontational sequence). Taken together, these variables (style, evaluation of politeness, and the main effect of the sequence) led to the identification of three main trends: politeness with an affiliative style in endogroup sequences; mock impoliteness with an aggressive style in endogroup sequences; and mock politeness with an aggressive style in confrontational sequences.

Resumen
Abstract The papers by Emeneau, F. Kuiper, and Southworth, taken together, form a signifi cant contribution to the study of South Asian prehistory. Kuiper’s “The Genesis of a Linguistic Area” is by now a classic and scarcely requires comment. Subsequent research has shown him to be substantially correct in his view that “it will no longer be permissible to ignore the wider Pan-Indian perspective with regard to those inno vations oflndo-Aryan that have striking parallels in the non-Aryan languages of India” (p. 146), and his paper remains a seminal contribution to that end. His hypothesis that such features as the gerunds, “must have emerged among the lower classes, and must have been used in colloquial speech, long before they found acceptance in the highly traditional religious poetry” (p. 151) has also been accepted and elaborated by others, such as Emeneau and Southworth. His paper and Emeneau’ s “The Indian Linguistic Area Revisited” are distinguished by the careful marshaling of detailed evidence through time; they are scholarly models that might well be emulated, whether or not one agrees with them in all details.

Abstract Grammars and studies of Koine Greek1 have shown that the impersonal constructions with Hult's study of fifth-century literary and Christian texts concluded that the distribution of personal and impersonal constructions was a reflection of a difference of register.4 The personal construction was retained in the more literary styles as a distinguishing feature. However, the impersonal constructions, as the unmarked of the two options, predominated in those texts which were written in a more colloquial style.

Abstract There appear to be in the speech behavior of Sinhala speakers some definite, observable correlations between the quality of a participant’s involvement or potential involvement in an action or state1 and the grammatical devices employed in its expression. This paper is an initial attempt to tease out some of these correlations, specifically by examining some grammatically important contrasts in verb morphology and sentence type from that point of view and also by attempting to relate the two broad action-involvement categories that emerge to still other grammatical phenomena.

This paper originated as a contribution to a colloquium in Cambridge in honour of C. O. Brink (1987); it was published in a shorter form in 1989. It explores certain problems raised by the Orator. Cicero there passes from one picture of the Middle Style, as a colourless style in between the Grand and the Plain, to something quite different, bright and ornamented like the ‘sophistic’ epideictic that Cicero has earlier rejected but now allows to play an important role in forensic oratory. The paper argues that Cicero makes this shift in order to give his own varied oratory a place in his theoretical model.

Abstract The papers collected as chapters in this book were originally presented at a colloquium sponsored by the Oxford University Law Faculty and the Norton Rose M5 Group of Solicitors which was held in September 1993. Their theme, somewhat broadly put, is the relationship between environmental law and economic growth, as viewed by lawyers, regulators, and industry in Europe and North America. The confines of the colloquium and of this book did not permit the inclusion of environmental economists, whose contribution to the general theme is certainly as important as that of lawyers and regulators. Nor could any attempt be made to consider the issues from the perspective of the developing world, where there have long been strongly held, if not always fully thought out, views on the supposedly harmful economic effect of environmental concerns. It does not, therefore, pretend to be a comprehensive treatment of the relationship between environmental regulation and economic growth.

Abstract The RAMS information of rail vehicles is an important data for the operation and maintenance of rail transit, and is the key to improving the performance and reliability level of rail vehicle equipment. At present, there are a large number of colloquial, hybridized and subjective data records in the RAMS information of metro trains; especially in the vehicle fault record, this phenomenon is widespread, which brings great difficulties to subsequent data analysis. Therefore, how to convert these irregular fault records into computer-readable fault texts is of great significance. This paper proposes the RAMS information structuring algorithm based on the Jieba word segmentation and Doc2Vec technology. Besides, we compile a professional dictionary of metro vehicles and a standard fault statement library for metro vehicles.

Resumen
The need for measurement to identify the development stage of industries is crucial to compete and leverage on the industrial business environment. Most of the development processes in Indonesia is influenced and supported by regulatory practices by the authority, and many development plans were based on capital investment rather than stage by stage development which based on industrial ground capabilities. On the other side, the sustainability of industries can be tracked from the competitiveness of its processes, technical methods, and machines. This will lead to better efficiency of its processes which will affect the cost of the products or services and also improve the industrial performance. This paper tries to: (1) use a perspective where the industrial historical momentum can be seen as a benchmark of development stages and give alternatives to focus on technology-driven resources, (2) adopt simple measurement calculations that can be used for comparing one of the industries to another, and also can be used as a bench-marking stage of a group of industries, (3) explain how product specification was related to technical capabilities and how it can be used as competitiveness measurement.

Resumen
The paper examines the functional peculiarities of syntactic constructions with supine and participle 1 that came into existence by grammatical analogy but have not been included in the literary norm of the Swedish language. They are found in 16th–17th century Swedish texts and are persistently used in everyday colloquial speech. “Double” supine in predicates with preterit perfect forms derived from verbs with modal semantics expressing irreality, appear in the perfective-resultative meaning by analogy with the perfect infinitive ha + supine, in which the first component can be omitted in the preterite after modal verbs. The variation form of participle 1 with the final morpheme -s came into being by analogy with adverbs derived from nominal phrases with genitive forms and having the same final consonant. It forms part of predicates with the verbs komma (with participle 1 of verbs of movement to express the way the moving subject appears) and bli (with participle 1 of verbs of spatial position to express delimitative semantics). Furthermore, a participle with a final -s is used in adverbial functions of the subjective and objective predicative, as well as in syntactic constructions with secondary parts of sentence of the verbal type that express secondary predication. Thus, the variation form of the participle 1 with a final -s expresses the additional grammatical feature of “non-attribution”, which is not found in the standard Swedish language.

Resumen
A new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) spread across the world from Wuhan (China) in the first quarter of 2020. The goal of our research in this paper is to map the extension of coronavirus cases across the regions of the Czech Republic and to describe the trends in dissemination within the regions. The results of a descriptive analysis of cases in the regions of the Czech Republic are reported. The survey was based on the reports by the Regional Hygiene Station of the Czech Republic The number of days to reach 100 cases in the regions, the average age of patients in the region and the median age of the population in individual regions were calculated. The number of days to reach 100 cases in a region shows in the speed of the spread of the virus in the region. The regions with the most aggressive beginning of the infection are not those currently reporting the highest numbers of infection. Concerning the division of cases into individual regions, the Prague region is the leader in absolute numbers. The Karlovarský region, together with Prague, is the most affected if taking into account the size of the population.

Resumen
<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">This paper presents the development of a method for the fatigue life analysis in chassis of road implements from power spectral densities, bringing a new possibility for fatigue analysis and reducing the probability of a prototype having fatigue failure. The method was executed by deploying triaxial and uniaxial accelerometers at various points on the road implement chassis, and performing finite element analysis, while it was driven on various road surfaces. Within the proposed method, three types of analyzes were performed: the operational modal analysis; harmonic and modal analysis; and fatigue life analysis. To perform the operational modal analysis, the signals were treated with low-pass and window filters and converted to the frequency domain. As a result, the modal data referring to the implement are inserted as properties of a virtual chassis model in finite elements to obtain frequency response functions through harmonic and modal analysis. A matrix of power spectral densities was also created from the accelerations obtained so that, together with the frequency response functions and, from stress calculation techniques, the spectral moments are obtained. To calculate the fatigue life, the Dirlik or Tovo-Benasciutti methods were employed using spectral moments to obtain the probability density functions. These functions, along with S-N curves, were then utilized to determine the fatigue life. The fatigue life was calculated both in the time and frequency domains for two chassis models, one simplified and the other being a full representation. The simplified model presented approximate results in both domains, in the time domain, the worst life presented itself at 11.200 km and, in the frequency domain, 8.900 km. The complete model showed a variation in the results, 847.000 km in the time domain, and 0.05 km in the frequency domain.</div></div>

Resumen
The authors of this work propose a Knowledge Discovery in Databases (KDD) model for predicting product market adoption and longevity using large scale, social media data. Social media data, available through sites such as Twitter® and Facebook®, have been shown to be leading indicators and predictors of events ranging from influenza spread, financial stock market prices, and movie revenues. Being ubiquitous and colloquial in nature allows users to honestly express their opinions in a unified, dynamic manner. This makes social media a relatively new data gathering source that can potentially appeal to designers and enterprise decision makers aiming to understand consumers response to their upcoming/newly launched products. Existing design methodologies for leveraging large scale data have traditionally relied on product reviews available on the internet to mine product information. However, such web reviews often come from disparate sources, making the aggregation and knowledge discovery process quite cumbersome, especially reviews for poorly received products. Furthermore, such web reviews have not been shown to be strong indicators of new product market adoption. In this paper, the authors demonstrate how social media can be used to predict and mine information relating to product features, product competition and market adoption. In particular, the authors analyze the sentiment in tweets and use the results to predict product sales. The authors present a mathematical model that can quantify the correlations between social media sentiment and product market adoption in an effort to compute the ability to stay in the market of individual products. The proposed technique involves computing the Subjectivity, Polarity, and Favorability of the product. Finally, the authors utilize Information Retrieval techniques to mine users’ opinions about strong, weak, and controversial features of a given product model. The authors evaluate their approaches using the real-world smartphone data, which are obtained from www.statista.com and www.gsmarena.com.

Resumen
<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">The Simulated Los Angeles City Traffic (SLACT) test is a well-established dynamometer test procedure used to evaluate brake noise and lining wear performance under a typical US city driving conditions. This procedure is based on a vehicle test conducted on the roads of Los Angeles, California. Unlike ICE vehicles, in electric vehicles regenerative brakes do a significant amount of the work to stop the vehicle, resulting in less work required from the foundation brakes. This means that the life of a brake pad could significantly increase in electric vehicles. It is possible then to reduce the thickness of the brake pad to improve packaging and cost. However, in situations where regenerative braking is disabled due to a failure or low battery charge level, all the work must be done by the foundation brake with no support from the regenerative braking. Hence, it is crucial to select the optimal brake pad thickness for such scenarios. The SLACT test was designed primarily for ICE vehicles and may not represent the lining life of electric vehicles accurately. As more auto manufacturers have started developing electric vehicles, there is now a need to establish a test procedure that considers regenerative braking for lining life predictions. This paper discusses in detail a modified SLACT test procedure that considers regenerative braking for electric vehicle lining life prediction.</div></div>

Resumen
<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">Despite efforts to reduce disc brake noise occurrence, it remains a significant concern in the automotive industry, particularly in the current era of electric vehicles, where it can be an intermittent issue. There is no standard solution available for every noise frequency, as it depends on various conditions and parameters that need to be experimentally identified and addressed. This paper specifically focuses on addressing low-frequency noise. During dynamic conditions, the contact pressure becomes uneven, leading to uneven pad wear and making the disc brake system susceptible to noise. In noise rigs, the paper selects the most suitable shim and pad geometry based on trials that analyze the interaction between the shim and pad. In conventional practice, shim modification was performed using computer-aided engineering, but obtaining accurate pressure patterns in dynamic conditions with CAE is challenging due to certain assumptions. Through dynamometer trials, the paper identifies that the critical frequency is caused by the coupling of the disc and pad mode shapes. Wear analysis reveals greater wear on the leading side of the piston, which can contribute to noise at critical frequencies.</div><div class="htmlview paragraph">Pressure patterns were examined using Tekscan™ across different pressure ranges from 10 bar to 50 bar to understand the cause of uneven wear, confirming the bias in the caliper loading pattern.</div><div class="htmlview paragraph">Consequently, the details of piston contact pressure were investigated, indicating higher pressure distribution on the leading end of the piston compared to the trialing side. Further analysis using finite element analysis (FEA) confirms a similar bias towards the caliper on the leading side. To modify the pressure pattern and reduce noise, a half-moon cut profile was introduced in the shim, resulting in the elimination of occurrences at 3.9 kHz.</div></div>

Resumen
<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">Squeal noise phenomenon in disc brakes is a complicated dynamic challenge which brake manufacturers have confronted for decades. The most prevalent technique apprehended by the brake manufactures is to simulate the braking conditions using a noise dynamometer. This is a well-established, expensive technique which is time-consuming. The objective of this paper is to understand the phenomenon of brake squeal, modal coupling and publish an analytical approach to predict a suitable damping material and thereby to optimize the dynamometer tests and time. As the temperature increases the stiffness of the component decreases thereby the resonance frequency tends to decrease. Compressing the pad increases its stiffness and thereby its resonance frequency. Compressibility being inversely proportional to stiffness has direct influence over the frequency response function of the brake components. Shim suppliers use generic structure to obtain the damping ratio at its resonance at every other degree. The damping ratio is measured only at the resonance of the generic structure which misses out most of the resonance frequency of the brake pad. Three shims were taken for study. The damping ratio measured reflects the system’s damping and not merely of the shim. So, pad shim assembly is ran over critical temperature obtained from the dynamometer results and the damping ratio is captured at critical frequency and plotted for various shims. Pad shim assembly is assembled in the brake dynamometer and the damping ratio is captured at the various pressures and plotted for various shims. From the plotted graphs, optimal shim can be selected. Following this analytical approach will optimize the dynamometer test.</div></div>
