Resumen
Famenian carbonate-terrigenous deposits with thickness іn 300-580 m are widely distributed within the Volyn-Podillia margin of the East-European platform. It is the facies-varying complex of rocks, the stratification of which is very difficult because there are no faunal remains in the sediments (with the exception of the lower part). Therefore, during the study of this stratum, the palynological method and the palynostratigraphic division are very important. The main purposes of this study are to identify palynozones, distinguish their generalized description and to create a local scale of the palynological zonation - the vertical succesion of biozones. The material for research consists of more than 450 samples, selected from 31 boreholes. The main method is the facial-palynological analysis, or the method of palynoorictocenosis. This is the first study to perform the standardized description of the biostratigraphic units determined by the palynological data for the Famennian of the Volyn-Podillia margin of the East-European platform. In general, five palynozones are allocated in the Famennian. All palynozones are comprehensively documented thanks to numerous palynological data, characterized by a zonal spore assemblage, in the structure of which there are following categories of taxa: based on the vertical range characteristics - key, characteristic, transit ones; on the content - subdominant, accessory. According to spreading peculiarities of key and characteristic species the following types of bio-units are identified: the Range-Zone (two units) and the Concurent-Range Zone (three ones). General the Famenian deposits of the Volyn-Podillia margin of the East-European platform were palynologically subdivided into lebedianensis–magnificus (the oldest zone), varicornata, cassis–lupinovitchi, versabilis –hamulus, lepidophyta (the youngest unit) miospore zones. Palynozones with a thickness from 17 to 231 m are laterally widespreaded, recorded from a number of boreholes within Volyn-Podillya. They have a set of palynological features that allow easy recognition of deposits. Palynozones detail the sequence bedding, complement the paleontological characteristic and form the local palynological zonal scheme of the Famenian of the Volyn-Podillia margin of the East-European platform.

Resumen
Pollen and spore analysis of surface sediment samples from 45 points within Oil Well Bog, a coniferous swamp near Cambridge, Ontario, was used to determine the possibility of identifying different wetland vegetation communities from their palynological record, and to assess the effects of variable wetland vegetation on the pollen representation of surrounding upland communities. The data obtained were mapped for individual taxa to allow direct comparison of the spatial patterns of vegetation abundance and the associated palynological assemblages, and cluster analysis was used to identify palynologically similar assemblages. Some wetland communities, such as swamp dominated by black spruce, do have distinctive pollen signatures, but not all the vegetational diversity observed is reflected in the palynological data, with similar pollen assemblages deriving from some communities which are vegetationally very different (e.g., shrub swamps dominated by Chamaedaphne calyculata and Ilex verticillata). The wetland pollen assemblages do reflect much of the floristic diversity of the surrounding uplands, although the different communities receive varying proportions of their pollen influx from upland sources (varying from less than 5% to over 90%), and wide variations in the percentage of a given upland pollen morphotype can be found within quite a short distance, depending on the nature of local wetland communities.Key words: palynology, swamp, surface samples, wetland.

Resumen
The palynological analysis of the Fosso Bianco section is based on the data obtained from 23 samples. Most of the samples contain polydominant and very rarely monodominant forest components. The palynological documentation is based on a classification of some well-known paleoflora groups. The comparative characteristics of the pollen spectra are based mainly on the data of the boundary Pliocene/Pleistocene in Central Italy.

Resumen
The spore morphology and wall ultrastructure of Sphaeropteris gardneri (Hook.) R.M. Tryon from Brazil were analyzed with LM, SEM and TEM. The spores are trilete with an ornamentation formed of short low ridges with spines in their margins. The exospore is 2.5μm thick, two- layered in section and single or branched channels are present. The perispore is 1.2μm thick and two-layered. The inner layer has three strata: the inner stratum is formed of a network of branched and fused threads, the middle stratum has threads with a radial orientation and in the outer stratum thin, dark fibres are immersed in a less dense contrasted matrix. The outer layer of the perispore is the one that forms the echinate-ridges and is constituted of threads arranged in a compact way. Globules of different sizes are observed on the surface. The differences found in the perispore ornamentation and ultrastructure in Alsophila, which was previously studied, and those of Sphaeropteris, show a tendency to wall complexity.

Resumen
Salt Core DV93 -1, from Badwater Basin in California's Death Valley, spans the past 192 ka. An analysis of fossil palynomorphs from 151.8 m (ca. 166 ka) to 103.5 m (ca. 114 ka) delimits four pollen zones. Zone 1, the "cheno -am" zone (151.8 to 143.5 m depth, 166 -154 ka), contains high percentages of Chenopodiaceae /Amaranthus pollen, and correlates with marine Oxygen Isotope Stage (OIS) 7. Zone 2, the juniper zone (143.5 to 117.3 m, 154 -124 ka), correlates with OIS 6 and contains high percentages of Cupressaceae pollen and low percentages of Ambrosia pollen. A simultaneous drop in juniper and increase in oak (Quercus) pollen, followed by replacement of Artemisia with Ambrosia, occurs at the Zone 2 /Zone 3 (oak zone) boundary (124 ka), corresponding to OIS Termination II warming. Zone 4, the Asteraceae zone (108.8 to 103.5 m, 119 -115 ka), contains higher percentages of Asteraceae and cheno -am pollen, indicating further warming.

Texto completo
Resumen
The "desertification" debate surrounding the Karoo Biome of South Africa has recently inspired much research in this region. The preservation of pollen in middens in arid environments from different parts of the world has great potential for the reconstruction of past vegetation. A lodge of the bush karoo rat (Otomys unisulcatus) was excavated near Prince Albert, South Africa, and the high numbers of well-preserved pollen grains was analysed. The vegetation reconstruction suggested that there was a decline in grasses over the whole sequence, while the vegetation experienced several short-term fluctuations throughout the time period. The ages within the lodge were uncertain, although the material is likely to be modern. The palynological analysis appear to be reliable and corresponds relatively well with other studies. The lodges of these species could therefore provide an exciting new source of historical pollen in the arid regions of southern Africa.

Alexander, Alan John. "Palynological, stratigraphic and chemical analyses of sediments in the Lothians with particular reference to the Lateglacial". Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 1985. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/10626.

Texto completo
Resumen
Palynological and stratigraphic investigations have been conducted on sediment cores for three sites in Lothian Region, Scotland: Balgone House, Broxmouth and Corstorphine. All phases of the Lateglacial period, as far as they are manifested in the Lothians at the sites studied, have been investigated with particular reference to the Younger Dryas, the main Interstadial, or Allerod, and also the evidence for the colder conditions that preceded it which are presumed to represent Older Dryas-type vegetation. Further light has been cast on the development of the Postglacial broad - leaved forests. The Cambridge computer program POLLDATA MKV was used to perform the necessary calculations and controlled a graph plotter to generate pollen diagrams. A series of subroutines is described that translated the calls to the Cambridge graphics subroutine library. This may serve as a model for other installations. Objective numerical zonation methods are applied to the pollen data. These methods are used not only to zone the pollen series but also to aid in the generation of hypotheses regarding vegetation changes. Chemical analyses of the sediments from Balgone House were undertaken. The results obtained are at variance with those from published work and it is proposed that the reason is that the chemical pre-treatment of samples employed locally may be less efficient in leaching the cations from the mineral fraction.

Resumen
Palynology is a multi-disciplinary field of science that deals with the study and application of extinct, [fossilised] and extant palynomorphs (pollen and spore) and other related microscopic biological entities in the environment. It is divided into palaeo- and actuo-palynology, and provides substantial proxies to understanding past and present vegetation dynamics respectively. With reference to the two geological principles of uniformitarianism and of the evolution of fauna/flora, the distribution of plant indicators across ecological zones, palynomorph morphology and pollen analysis, palynology can be used to identify the change in past and present local and regional vegetation and climate and humans impact on the environment. Other supportive areas of endeavour like radiocarbon dating, sedimentology, taphonomic processes and geomorphology can be used to triangulate inferences drawn from palynological data. Palynomorphs are made of outer cell walls embedded with an inert, complex and resistant biopolymeric signature (called sporopollenin) which helps to facilitate long term preservation in different environmental matrices under favourable conditions, hence its widespread applicability. Palynology have proven to very reliable in reconstructing past vegetation, decrypting essential honeybee plants and understanding the impact of climate on plant population using pollen analysis, for which is the basis for the application of palynology in environmental studies. The application of palynology in climate, vegetation and anthropogenic studies begins with the selection of matrix (sediments from lake, river, ocean, excavation, relatively intact soil profile, bee products), coring or collection of samples, subjection to a series of chemically aided digestion, separation, physical filtration, decanting, accumulating of palynomorphs, microscopic study and ends with the interpretation of recovered information. Literature review on the application of palynology for understanding vegetation and climate interactions is presented in this paper.

Resumen
An analysis of the composition of surface spore-pollen spectra (SPS) was carried out within a gradient from forest-tundra to northern taiga. In total, 20 sub-recent moss-lichen surface samples were obtained on the territory of the Nadymsky and Purovsky districts of Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Area. All studied spectra contain pollen of Larix sibirica Ledeb., Picea obovata Ledeb., Pinus sibirica Du Tour, P. sylvestris L., Betula pubescens Ehrh., B. nana L, as well as Ericaceae, Asteraceae and Cyperaceae. In the SPS of the studied communities, an increase in the participation of the pollen of Pinus species, a decrease in the content of Betula nana pollen, and an increase in the diversity of the taxonomic composition of herbs at the transition from the forest-tundra to the northern taiga are observed. The low content of Picea obovata pollen in the forest-tundra and northern taiga spectra reflects the low proportion of spruce in the studied communities. The low pollen proportion of Larix sibirica in the forest-tundra and northern taiga does not reflect the actual participation of L. sibirica in the vegetation cover, but is associated with rapid destruction of pollen and its low flight ability. The low content of Larix sibirica pollen in the forest-tundra and northern taiga does not reflect the actual participation of larch in the stand.
