Resumen
AbstractLipid biomarkers have been extensively applied for tracing organisms and evolutionary processes through Earth's history. They have become especially important for the reconstruction of early life on Earth and, potentially, for the detection of life in the extraterrestrial realm. However, it is not always clear how exactly biomarkers reflect a paleoecosystem as their preservation may be influenced by increasing temperatures (T) and pressures (P) during burial. While a number of biomarker indices reflecting thermal maturity have been established, it is often less well constrained to which extent biomarker ratios used for paleoreconstruction are compromised by T and P processes. In this study we conducted hydrous pyrolysis of Green River Shale (GRS) kerogen in gold capsules for 2–2400 h at 300°C to assess the maturation behaviour of several compounds used as life tracers and for the reconstruction of paleoenvironments (n-alkanes, pristane, phytane, gammacerane, steranes, hopanes and cheilanthanes). Lignite samples were maturated in parallel with the GRS kerogen to obtain exact vitrinite reflectance data at every sampling point. Our experiment confirms the applicability of biomarker-based indices and ratios as maturity indicators (e.g. total cheilanthanes/hopanes ratio; sterane and hopane isomerization indices). However, several biomarker ratios that are commonly used for paleoreconstructions (e.g. pristane/phytane, pristane/n-C17, phytane/n-C18 and total steranes/hopanes) were considerably affected by differences in the thermal degradation behaviour of the respective compounds. Short-term experiments (48 h) performed at 400°C also revealed that biomarkers >C15 (especially steranes and hopanes) and ‘biological’ chain length preferences for n-alkanes are vanished at a vitrinite reflectance between 1.38 and 1.83% RO. Our data highlight that ‘thermal taphonomy’ effects have to be carefully considered in the interpretation of biomarkers in ancient rocks and, potentially, extraterrestrial materials.

Resumen
Palynology is the study of microscopic organic-walled organism remains, called palynomorphs and consisting of different groups of planktonic and benthic microorganisms. They can be preserved in the sediments and applied as proxies to reconstruct paleoenvironmental and paleoclimatic conditions. Among marine palynomorphs, dinoflagellate cysts (dinocysts) are regarded as one of the most useful (paleo-)environmental indicators, occurring in all aquatic environments. The main aim of this study is to improve the knowledge on palynomorphs spatial distribution patterns offshore Myanmar in relationship to the organic matter composition (C/N), concentration (TOC) and to the relative position to riverine and coastal systems. In this uninvestigated area, 29 surface sediment samples were analyzed for their palynofacies composition, focusing on dinocysts content and distribution also to investigate the significance of specific palynological ratios (e.g., Protoperidinioid vs. Gonyaulacoid dinocysts and pollen and spores vs. dinocysts) as proxies for paleoreconstructions.

Resumen
High Arctic permafrosted soils represent a massive sink in the global carbon cycle, accounting for twice as much carbon as what is currently stored as carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. However, with current warming trends this sink is in danger of thawing and potentially releasing large amounts of carbon as both carbon dioxide and methane into the atmosphere. It is difficult to make predictions about the future of this sink without knowing how it has reacted to past temperature and climate changes. This dissertation summarizes the results of the first study to look at long term, fine scale organic carbon delivery by the high-Arctic Colville River into Simpson’s Lagoon in the near-shore Beaufort Sea. Modern delivery of organic carbon to the Lagoon was determined to come from a variety of sources through the use of a three end-member mixing model and sediment biomarker concentrations. These sources include the Colville River in the western area of the Lagoon near the river mouth, marine sources in areas of the Lagoon without protective barrier islands, and coastal erosional sources and the Mackenzie River in the eastern area of the Lagoon. Downcore organic carbon delivery was measured on two cores in the Lagoon, one taken near the mouth of the Colville River (spans about 1800 years of history) and one taken on the eastern end of the Lagoon (spans about 600 years of history). Bulk organic parameters and biomarkers were measured in both cores and analyzed with Principle Component Analysis to determine long-term trends in organic carbon delivery. It was shown that at various times in the past, highly degraded organic carbon inputs of what is likely soil and peat carbon were delivered to the Lagoon. At other times, inputs of fresher, non-degraded, terrestrially-derived organic carbon inputs of what are likely higher amounts of plant and vegetative material was delivered to the Lagoon. Inputs of degraded soil carbon were also shown to correspond to higher temperatures on the North Slope of Alaska, likely indicating that warmer temperatures lead to a thawing of permafrost and in turn organic carbon mobilization to the coastal Beaufort Sea.

Resumen
The Arctic area is responding more rapidly to global warming than most other areas on our planet. The identification of sedimentary systems and processes in the Arctic area allows the reconstruction of its palaeoclimatic and palaeoenvironmental evolution during the Quaternary period. This work consists of the study of three sites located in the Fram Strait (eastern Greenland Sea), in the western Spitsbergen Fjords and in the northwestern edge of the Barents Sea, corresponding with diverse geographical, morphological and oceanographical settings. These sites are all located along the main incoming pathway of the Atlantic Water (AW) into the Arctic area, allowing to reconstruct the oceanographical changes during the last 12 kyr BP, with a special focus on the last centuries. Thus, the overall aim of this PhD Thesis is to improve the knowledge of the centennial and decadal climatic variations and ocean circulation and to trace the AW impact into the Arctic area during the upper Pleistocene and Holocene. A multiproxy (e.g. planktic and benthic foraminifera, sediment lithology) investigation is applied to a long marine sediment core recovered from the Bellsund Drift depocenter and six short cores from Bellsund Drift, a coastal fjord and the Kveithola Trough. The sedimentary record of the Calypso piston core (GS191-01PC, 1647m water depth), records the Upper Pleistocene (12.05 to 11.7 kyr BP), and an expanded Holocene sequence (more than 5 m thick, 11.7 to 0.63 kyr BP). The millennial record of the Bellsund Drift indicates a general progressive increase of the bottom and superficial water temperature, due to the incoming of the warm AW and the decreasing of sea ice extent. In the same area, I also analysed a box-corer (20 cm length, 1647 m water depth), which records the climatic variations of the Modern Period (MP, 1890 A.D. to present). My results indicate a general warm increment during the entire MP, interrupted by short cold events of about ca. 5 years. In the Kongsfjorden-Krossfjorden glacial system, a tidewater glacier fjord, (western margin of Svalbard) I analysed a multi-corer (32 cm at 105.6 m water depth), which records the last 60 years. This ice-covered area shows a decrease of the ice influence not directly related to the AW inflow, but indicated by the dominance of the cold ArW species related to meltwater and the no increment in the AW species. Four multi-cores collected along the Kveithola Trough are also studied (between 8 and 38 cm of sediment recovered and at water depths ranging from 376 m to 159 m) and correspond with the last part of the Little Ice Age (LIA) and Modern Period (MP). The foraminiferal assemblages indicate the passage from colder to warmer conditions during the last 350 years, conditioned by the morphology and geographical position of the trough. The palaeoenvironmental evolution of the bottom and the surface water masses indicate multiyear and decadal variations between warm and cold periods during the last c.a. two centuries, related to the interaction between the polar superficial cold-water and the warm bottom AW. The foraminiferal assemblages demonstrate increasing temperatures, but still the dominance of Arctic species, which are related to the continuing retreat of the sea ice, the reduction in the albedo and further favouring heat of the ocean surface; and the increase of the air temperature amplifying the input of heat in the area.

Resumen
We present data on ostracod assemblage analysis from the Laptev, Kara and White Seas in the Arctic Ocean. We established the relationship between modern ostracod distribution and environmental parameters and applied this knowledge to interpret fossil Quaternary ostracod assemblages. Data on distribution and ecological parameters for different modern Arctic and Boreal species give us an opportunity to interpret even taxonomically poor samples. Late Pleistocene-Holocene ostracod assemblages from the eastern Arctic shelves and their stratigraphic succession in the studied cores reflect the environmental transition during the gradual deepening of the sites and distance increase from the coastline during the Postglacial sea-level rise. Variations in fossil ostracod assemblages at the continental slope location suggest temporal increases in modified Atlantic water inflow, as well as point to periods of glacier meltwater and freshwater input. Late Saalian-Eemian assemblages from the White Sea area contain typical Arctic representatives as well as taxa inhabiting boreal and more southern locations and the majority of species present are known to tolerate decreased salinities. Assemblage changes reflect the transition from the initial stage of inundation, with active hydrodynamics, to stable marine conditions with subsequent warming and shallowing of the basin.
