The hydrodynamics of Gulf St. Vincent (GSV) are investigated through the use of several numerical models based on the Regional Ocean Modeling Suite (ROMS). Idealised models which investigate tides, wind forcing and thermohaline forcing are undertaken, as well as a fully forced qausi-realistic hindcast model. The model domain encompasses Investigator Strait, GSV and Backstairs Passage, as well as some of the shelf to the south-east. The tidal model incorporates a new method for estimating the quadratic coefficient of drag which accounts for depth and benthic type. Results of the tidal model indicate that the presence of seagrass meadows are significant for bottom friction and the estimation of tidal elevations and currents. This is a particularly important result for GSV, as the health and distribution of seagrass meadows is a key environmental factor. The idealised wind-forced and geostrophically adjusted models indicate that the wind-stress direction and magnitude is critical in determining the connectivity of the gulf with the shelf, where thermohaline circulation is less important. Results of the idealised models indicate that during summer, when winds are dominated by south-easterlies, gulf waters are largely recirculated and salinity increases as a result. During winter the winds become dominated by south-westerlies, which induce a gulf wide clockwise circulation which draws in fresher shelf waters via Investigator Strait and expels salty gulf water via Backstairs Passage. A volume averaged salt balance for the quasi-realistic model supports this finding, indicating that salinity increases whilst under summer wind conditions and decreases for winter wind patterns. This is due to the excess of evaporation over precipitation year round. Flushing time scales for summer and winter conditions are also explored based on the results of the quasi-realistic model, and indicate that the interior of the gulf is flushed more slowly during summer than winter. Investigator Strait and Backstairs Passage exhibit little seasonal variability. Passive Lagrangian float tracer studies are also conducted, and further support the finding that summer conditions show reduced connectivity between the shelf and gulf when compared to winter. In the weather band, periods of enhanced exchange between the shelf and gulf are shown to coincide with wind-stresses from the west, while periods of reduced exchange coincide with wind-stresses from the east.<br>Thesis (Ph.D.) -- University of Adelaide, School of Mathematical Sciences, 2019

This thesis examines the total diversity of fossil actinopterygian or ray-finned fishes of Devonian Gondwana. The bulk of the material comprises newly prepared specimens from the famous Late Devonian (Frasnian) Gogo Formation of Western Australia, much of which was collected in the 2005 field season. Also examined are specimens from the Middle Devonian deposits of the Aztec Siltstone, Antarctica; the Bunga Beds of New South Wales and the Mt Howitt fossil sites of Victoria. With the benefit of this new material, I describe new several new genera and species of Devonian actinopterygians and clarify the descriptions of previously described forms. Although still a relatively sparse ichthyofaunal component, the Devonian diversity of the Gondwanan ray-fins was much greater than hithert o recognised, with at least five species present in the Gogo Formation. With an improved understanding of early ray-finned anatomy, characters previously considered primitive or of special diagnostic value are re-evaluated. Newly prepared material from the Aztec Siltstone of Antarctica and the Bunga Beds of New South Wales represent forms similar to Howqualepis rostridens from the Givetian of Victoria. The Antarctic form is named Donnrosenia schaefferi while the Bunga Beds fossil is questionably assigned as a congener of Howqualepis. The similarity of freshwater fossil actinopterygians throughout southeastern Australia and South Victoria Land, Antarctica supports previously described macrovertebrate evidence for a regionally endemic ichthyofauna in the Middle Devonian. Additionally, the pectoral fin of H. rostridens is redescribed and is broader in shape and less extensively unsegmented than previously recognised. Of the five Gogo taxa, the genus Mimia Gardiner and Bartram (1977) is renamed Mimipiscis nom. nov. due to preoccupation. Newly available material of the type species, Mimipiscis toombsi, reveals ontogenetic variability in ornamentation and new data on the parasphenoid and shape of the caudal fin. A second form, Mimipiscis bartrami sp. nov., differs from the type species in details of the body shape, squamation, snout, suboperculum and parasphenoid. Two new genera, Gogosardina and Pickeringia gen. nov. are described. Gogosardina is a highly elongate form with a unique arrangement of postrostrals which form the anterior margin of the pineal opening. Pickeringia gen. nov. possesses a highly distinctive spinose ornamentation over the skull, scales and lepidotrichia and extremely large vestibular fontanelles. Specimens of Gogosardina and M. bartrami sp. nov. are known to possess conodont elements within the body cavity suggesting diet and hunting strategies. A phylogenetic analysis of Devonian ray-fins suggests a limited degree of regional endemism in Eastern Gondwana with unique families present on the Gogo reefs and freshwater habitats in southeastern Australia and Southern Victoria Land, Antarctica. The close similarity of the actinopterygian faunas of Antarctica, New South Wales and Victoria adds to an already large body of evidence suggesting a regionally endemic Gondwanan ichthyofauna in the Middle Devonian.

This thesis concerns a sedimentological study of the Late Permian Broughton, Pheasants Nest and Erins Vale Formations, southern Sydney Basin, New South Wales, aimed at producing a palaeoenvironmental interpretation of these sequences. It is based on facies analysis of borecore data, vertical and lateral profiling of outcrop sequences, including architectural element analysis, and an integration of the results of these studies with previous work. The sequences studied begin with the interdigitating lower offshore silt of the upper Berry Siltstone and lower offshore sand-belt of the lower Broughton Formation, including progradational volcanic shoreface sequences. Sedimentation occurred in the 'Broughton Seaway' between the western cratonic landmass and a north-northeast oriented volcanic barrier in the east. River-derived meltwater underflows, massflows, tidally-driven longshore currents and migration of large sandwaves into the lower offshore sand-belt were the major depositional processes. The upper offshore sand-sheets of the middle Broughton Formation represent a widespread development of time-transgressive, above storm wave base, aggradational sedimentation. The progradational sandskirts of volcanic alluvial fans in the south (Jamberoo Sandstone Member) constructed a delta which was of a mixed type between a pyroclastic and alluvial fan delta. These kinds of deltas probably served as significant sources and depositional conduits for the offshore sediments which were dispersed mainly through wave action in a storm-dominated setting._ Submarine volcanic flows and associated shallow marine environments, and emerged volcanic islands with woodlands were coevally present in the southeast during the deposition of the Broughton Formation. The upper Broughton Formation is generally marked by a northeastward diachronous progradation of the southern shoreline, which progressively filled up the Broughton Seaway. Progradational evolution of the deltaic to barred shoreline, reflecting waning influence of the Gerringong volcanic barriers, was contemporaneous with the upper deltaic and distributary coastal zone sedimentation of the Pheasants Nest Formation. Actually, the periglacial braided subaerial fans and subaerial volcanism modelled for the lower and middle Pheasants Nest Formation greatly contributed to a northward progradation of the shoreline and retreat of the Broughton Seaway. With additional contributions from the western craton, a centripetal sediment transport pattern toward a northeast-oriented depocentre resulted. This meant development of a northeasterly flowing longitudinal drainage system. Physiographically, most of the former Broughton Seaway had now transformed into a broad valley between the volcanic and cratonic hinterlands. During the upper Pheasants Nest Formation time, extensive development of a flat, alluvial plain with an axial drainage pattern, low-lying coastal swamps and networks of high sinuosity, single channel or multiple channel anastomosing river systems is postulated. A shallow epeiric Erins Vale sea was caused by transgression across the topographically low-lying northeastern to northern alluvial plains of the Pheasants Nest Formation . The lower-middle Erins Vale Formation represents shoreface-offshore conditions in the east and north, including an oxygen-deficient, lower offshore regime (Kulnura Marine Tongue) - and shoreline fades of a transgressive barrier system in the west and south. Deposition during the upper Erins Vale Formation occurred through fan delta progradation from the western craton, which passed upward into the subaerial fan of the Marangaroo Conglomerate; a central and southern regressive barrier system and an energetic shoreface sand in the east which passed upward into the Wilton Formation. The upper Nowra Sandstone and lower Berry Siltstone form a transgressive systems tract. A sustained tectonic loading producing protracted subsidence was apparently the primary cause of basin subsidence. The upper Berry Siltstone and lower to middle Broughton Formation represent an overall highstand systems tract with portions of the upper Berry Siltstone and the lowest Broughton Formation showing interludes of minor transgressive pulses. This reflected a more stabilized base-level situation, following a reduction of basin subsidence rate. The upper Broughton Formation and lower-middle Pheasants Nest Formation constitute a lowstand systems tract, including early regressive phases represented by the upper Broughton Formation. It was related to the development of a foreswell on the basin margin and subsidence in the depocentre caused by the propagation of compressional energy from the orogen. The upper Pheasants Nest Formation indicates an early transgressive stage and the lower Erins Vale Formation, including the Kulnura Marine Tongue, is a transgressive systems tract. The middle Erins Vale Formation represents a highstand systems tract. Subsequently, the early regressive phases represented by the upper Erins Vale Formation, the lowstand wedge of the basal Wilton Formation and the Marangaroo Conglomerate constituted a lowstand systems tract. They developed as a result of erosion of a fores well produced on the cratonic margin. This study provides evidence in support of the Currarong Orogen. The Offshore Uplift is probably a preserved portion of the Currarong Orogen and the Newcastle Sub-basin was a likely depocentre for the Late Permian sequences. A periglacial climate with seasonal freezing and thawing had significant influence on sedimentation. Episodic meltwater discharge mobilized large volumes of volcaniclastic materials in spring (as lahars at times of large floods and/ or volcanic eruptions) and associated ice floes enroute to the sea. The major variables for the studied sequences in the southern Sydney Basin are constrained in this thesis, and comparative studies identified modern and ancient global examples that are broadly similar to the Late Permian sequences.

The importance of the Musgrave Province in continental reconstructions of Proterozoic Australia is only beginning to be appreciated. The Mesoproterozoic Musgrave Province sits in a geographically central location within Australia and is bounded by older and more isotopically evolved regions including the Gawler Craton of South Australia and Arunta Region of the Northern Territory. Understanding the crustal growth and deformation mechanisms involved in the formation of the Musgrave Province, and also the nature of the basement that separates these tectonic elements, allows for greater insight into defining the timing and processes responsible for the amalgamation of Proterozoic Australia. The ca. 1.60-1.54 Ga Musgravian Gneiss preserves geochemical and isotopic signatures related to ongoing arc-magmatism in an active margin between the North Australian and South Australian Cratons (NAC and SAC). Characteristic geochemical patterns of the Musgravian Gneiss include negative anomalies in Nb, Ti, and Y, and are accompanied by steep LREE patterns. Also characteristic of the Musgravian Gneiss is its juvenile Nd isotopic composition (ɛNd1.55 values from -1.2 to +0.9). The juvenile isotopic signature of the Musgravian Gneiss separates it from the bounding comparitively isotopically evolved terranes of the Arunta Region and Gawler Craton. The geochemical and isotopic signatures of these early Mesoproterozoic felsic rocks have similarities with island arc systems involving residual Ti-bearing minerals and garnet. Circa 1.40 Ga metasedimentary rocks of the eastern Musgrave Province also record vital evidence for determining Australia.s location and fit within a global plate reconstruction context during the late Mesoproterozoic. U-Pb detrital zircon and Sm-Nd isotopic data from these metasedimentary rocks suggests a component of derivation from sources outside of the presently exposed Australian crust. Best fit matches come from rocks originating from eastern Laurentia. Detrital zircon ages range from Palaeoproterozoic to late Mesoproterozoic, constraining the maximum depositional age of the metasediments to approximately 1.40 Ga, similar to that of the Belt Supergroup in western Laurentia. The 1.49-1.36 Ga detrital zircons in the Musgrave metasediments are interpreted to have been derived from the voluminous A-type suites of Laurentia, as this time period represents a “magmatic gap” in Australia, with an extreme paucity of sources this age recognized. The metasedimentary rocks exhibit a range of Nd isotopic signatures, with ɛNd(1.4 Ga) values ranging from -5.1 to 0.9, inconsistent with complete derivation from Australian sources, which are more isotopically evolved. The isotopically juvenile ca. 1.60-1.54 Ga Musgravian Gneiss is also an excellent candidate for the source of the abundant ca. 1.6-1.54 Ga detrital zircons within the lower sequences of the Belt Supergroup. If these interpretations are correct, they support a palaeogeographic reconstruction involving proximity of Australia and Laurentia during the pre-Rodinia Mesoproterozoic. This also increases the prospectivity of the eastern Musgrave Province to host a metamorphised equivalent of the massive Pb-Zn-Ag Sullivan deposit. The geochemical and isotopic signatures recorded in mafic-ultramafic rocks can divulge important information regarding the state of the sub continental lithospheric mantle (SCLM). The voluminous cumulate mafic-ultramafic rocks of the ca. 1.08 Ga Giles Complex record geochemical and Nd-Sr isotopic compositions consistent with an enriched parental magma. Traverses across three layered intrusions, the Kalka, Ewarara, and Gosse Pile were geochemically and isotopically analysed. Whole rock samples display variably depleted to enriched LREE patterns when normalised to chondrite ((La/Sm)N = 0.43-4.72). Clinopyroxene separates display similar depleted to enriched LREE patterns ((La/Sm)N = 0.37-7.33) relative to a chondritic source. The cumulate rocks display isotopically evolved signatures (ɛNd ~-1.0 to .5.0 and ɛSr ~19.0 to 85.0). Using simple bulk mixing and AFC equations, the Nd-Sr data of the more radiogenic samples can be modelled by addition of ~10% average Musgrave crust to a primitive picritic source, without need for an enriched mantle signature. Shallow decompressional melting of an asthenospheric plume source beneath thinned Musgravian lithosphere is envisaged as a source for the parental picritic magma. A model involving early crustal contamination within feeder zones is favoured, and consequently explorers looking for Ni-Cu-Co sulphides should concentrate on locating these feeder zones. Few absolute age constraints exist for the timing of the intracratonic Petermann Orogeny of the Musgrave Province. The Petermann Orogeny is responsible for much of the lithospheric architecture we see today within the Musgrave Province, uplifting and exhuming large parts along crustal scale E-W trending fault/shear systems. Isotopic and geochemical analysis of a suite of stratigraphic units within the Neoproterozoic to Cambrian Officer Basin to the immediate south indicate the development of a foreland architecture at ca. 600 Ma. An excursion in ɛNd values towards increasingly less negative values at this time is interpreted as representing a large influx of Musgrave derived sediments. Understanding the nature of the basement separating the SAC from the NAC and WAC is vital in constructing models of the amalgamation of Proterozoic Australia. This region is poorly understood as it is overlain by the thick sedimentary cover of the Officer Basin. However, the Coompana Block is one place where basement is shallow enough to be intersected in drillcore. The previously geochronologically, geochemically, and isotopically uncharacterised granitic gneiss of the Coompana Block represents an important period of within-plate magmatism during a time of relative magmatic quiescence in the Australian Proterozoic. U-Pb LA-ICPMS dating of magmatic zircons provides an age of ca. 1.50 Ga, interpreted as the crystallisation age of the granite protolith. The samples have distinctive A-type chemistry characterised by high contents of Zr, Nb, Y, Ga, LREE with low Mg#, Sr, CaO and HREE. ɛNd values are high with respect to surrounding exposed crust of the Musgrave Province and Gawler Craton, and range from +1.2 to +3.3 at 1.5 Ga. The tectonic environment into which the granite was emplaced is also unclear, however one possibility is emplacement within an extensional environment represented by interlayered basalts and arenaceous sediments of the Coompana Block. The 1.49-1.36 Ga detrital zircons in the Musgrave metasediments are interpreted to have been derived from the voluminous A-type suites of Laurentia, as this time period represents a “magmatic gap” in Australia, with an extreme paucity of sources this age recognized. The metasedimentary rocks exhibit a range of Nd isotopic signatures, with ɛNd(1.4 Ga) values ranging from -5.1 to 0.9, inconsistent with complete derivation from Australian sources, which are more isotopically evolved. The isotopically juvenile ca. 1.60-1.54 Ga Musgravian Gneiss is also an excellent candidate for the source of the abundant ca. 1.6-1.54 Ga detrital zircons within the lower sequences of the Belt Supergroup. If these interpretations are correct, they support a palaeogeographic reconstruction involving proximity of Australia and Laurentia during the pre-Rodinia Mesoproterozoic. This also increases the prospectivity of the eastern Musgrave Province to host a metamorphised equivalent of the massive Pb-Zn-Ag Sullivan deposit. The geochemical and isotopic signatures recorded in mafic-ultramafic rocks can divulge important information regarding the state of the sub continental lithospheric mantle (SCLM). The voluminous cumulate mafic-ultramafic rocks of the ca. 1.08 Ga Giles Complex record geochemical and Nd-Sr isotopic compositions consistent with an enriched parental magma. Traverses across three layered intrusions, the Kalka, Ewarara, and Gosse Pile were geochemically and isotopically analysed. Whole rock samples display variably depleted to enriched LREE patterns when normalised to chondrite ((La/Sm)N = 0.43-4.72). Clinopyroxene separates display similar depleted to enriched LREE patterns ((La/Sm)N = 0.37-7.33) relative to a chondritic source. The cumulate rocks display isotopically evolved signatures (ɛNd ~-1.0 to .5.0 and ɛSr ~19.0 to 85.0). Using simple bulk mixing and AFC equations, the Nd-Sr data of the more radiogenic samples can be modelled by addition of ~10% average Musgrave crust to a primitive picritic source, without need for an enriched mantle signature. Shallow decompressional melting of an asthenospheric plume source beneath thinned Musgravian lithosphere is envisaged as a source for the parental picritic magma. A model involving early crustal contamination within feeder zones is favoured, and consequently explorers looking for Ni-Cu-Co sulphides should concentrate on locating these feeder zones. Few absolute age constraints exist for the timing of the intracratonic Petermann Orogeny of the Musgrave Province. The Petermann Orogeny is responsible for much of the lithospheric architecture we see today within the Musgrave Province, uplifting and exhuming large parts along crustal scale E-W trending fault/shear systems. Isotopic and geochemical analysis of a suite of stratigraphic units within the Neoproterozoic to Cambrian Officer Basin to the immediate south indicate the development of a foreland architecture at ca. 600 Ma. An excursion in ɛNd values towards increasingly less negative values at this time is interpreted as representing a large influx of Musgrave derived sediments. Understanding the nature of the basement separating the SAC from the NAC and WAC is vital in constructing models of the amalgamation of Proterozoic Australia. This region is poorly understood as it is overlain by the thick sedimentary cover of the Officer Basin. However, the Coompana Block is one place where basement is shallow enough to be intersected in drillcore. The previously geochronologically, geochemically, and isotopically uncharacterised granitic gneiss of the Coompana Block represents an important period of within-plate magmatism during a time of relative magmatic quiescence in the Australian Proterozoic. U-Pb LA-ICPMS dating of magmatic zircons provides an age of ca. 1.50 Ga, interpreted as the crystallisation age of the granite protolith. The samples have distinctive A-type chemistry characterised by high contents of Zr, Nb, Y, Ga, LREE with low Mg#, Sr, CaO and HREE. ɛNd values are high with respect to surrounding exposed crust of the Musgrave Province and Gawler Craton, and range from +1.2 to +3.3 at 1.5 Ga. The tectonic environment into which the granite was emplaced is also unclear, however one possibility is emplacement within an extensional environment represented by interlayered basalts and arenaceous sediments of the Coompana Block. Regardless, the granitic gneiss intersected in Mallabie 1 represents magmatic activity during the “Australian magmatic gap” of ca. 1.52-1.35 Ga, and is a possible source for detrital ca. 1.50 zircons found within sedimentary rocks of Tasmania and Antarctica, and metasedimentary rocks of the eastern Musgrave Province.<br>Thesis (Ph.D.) -- University of Adelaide, School of Earth and Environmental Sciences, 2006

In this thesis, there is an investigation into the factors that contributed to the ascendancy of printmaking in South Australia in the 1960s and the development of political printmaking in the 1970s. An analysis of key individuals is contextualised within the institutional and political frameworks operating in Adelaide at this time. An important aspect of this thesis is the examination of the transition from teaching craft and trade-based print subjects to fine art printmaking courses at the South Australian School of Art (SASA), one of the oldest art schools in Australia. Some of the research was based on the SASA archival material at the University of South Australia, which included the prospectus booklets, presentation of diplomas and prizes leaflets, SASA principal’s reports, and The Advertiser newspaper listings of students’ results. Paul Beadle and Charles Bannon were responsible for key developments in printmaking in South Australia. Beadle was a dynamic and far-sighted principal of the SASA from 1958-60. Bannon taught at St Peter’s College, where he instituted a ‘Bauhaus-style’ education methodology in the preparatory school. When Bannon was placed in charge of high school classes, he chose German printmaker Udo Sellbach to carry on his educational methods in the preparatory school. Beadle invited Sellbach to set up a graphics studio at the SASA and Sellbach and his then wife, Karin Schepers, became leading figures in the revitalisation of fine art printmaking in South Australia. Case studies of Charles Bannon, Barbara Hanrahan, Ann Newmarch and Olga Sankey are employed to extend the thesis narrative of printmaking education and professionalism in South Australia. In each case study, the formative years, studies, overseas travel and printmaking careers are considered in relation to their contribution to printmaking in South Australia. Despite the outstanding achievements of printmaking in Adelaide in the 1960s and 1970s, this has been a neglected area of research. In this thesis, important new research is presented and a number of reasons are canvassed as to why there was a subsequent contraction in printmaking in South Australia, especially in relation to the national context.

Australia’s education system is undergoing major reform with the staged introduction of the Australian Curriculum starting in 2010. One of the learning areas designated for development in the Australian Curriculum is Health and Physical Education (HPE). The aim of this study is to examine the understandings, attitudes and intentions of regional HPE teachers in relation to the Australian Curriculum: Health and Physical Education (AC:HPE). A qualitative research method based on narrative inquiry has been used to gather data to provide a depiction of regional secondary school HPE teachers during the initial implementation phase of the AC:HPE. This study is significant in that it occurs at a unique time in Australia’s education system with the realisation of the nation’s first national curriculum. Furthermore, this study will contribute knowledge to an area of HPE research that has received little scholarly attention in the past, using a research methodology that is not usually associated with the discipline.
