Abstract The clitic ne in (1) is sometimes called a “partitive” clitic because it is associated with a DP that appears to be partitive in meaning, as suggested by the English translation of (1). Several Romance languages besides Standard Italian have this kind of clitic (cf. Catalan en, French en, Paduan ge-ne ), and some Germanic languages use the word for ‘there’ in the same manner, as shown below: The syntactic properties of these elements have been recently studied by various authors;1 the basic line of analysis is that ne-cliticization, and the corresponding process in the Germanic languages, is a form of subextraction from DP (or from QP; see Cardinaletti and Giusti 1992). According to this analysis, (1) would be assigned a structure like (3a), and (2b), for instance, would have a structure like (3b).

Resumen
Abstract In this chapter I analyze comparatively the distributional properties of different classes of wh phrases in main exclamative and interrogative sentences in a northeastern Italian variety spoken in the northern area of the Veneto region, which will be referred to for simplicity as Bellunese. Differently from what happens in main interrogatives, where some classes of wh-phrases appear in situ, in main exclamatives all wh-phrases appear, in this dialect, invariably in sentence initial position; in order to account for this difference in the distribution of wh-phrases and in particular for the obligatoriness of overt movement in exclamative contexts, it will be proposed that wh-phrases appearing in initial position occupy a different structural position in interrogatives and in exclamatives. More precisely, following a proposal put forth by Beninca (1996), who analyzes the syntactic properties of exclamative sentences in Paduan, it will be argued that in Bellunese wh-phrases in main exclamatives raise to the specifier position of a functional projection of the CP system which is structurally higher than the one occupied in interrogative sentences.
