Resumen
Lithium-ion battery packs are made by many batteries, and the difficulty in heat transfer can cause many safety issues. It is important to evaluate thermal performance of a battery pack in designing process. Here, a multiscale method combining a pseudo-two-dimensional model of individual battery and three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics is employed to describe heat generation and transfer in a battery pack. The effect of battery arrangement on the thermal performance of battery packs is investigated. We discuss the air-cooling effect of the pack with four battery arrangements which include one square arrangement, one stagger arrangement and two trapezoid arrangements. In addition, the air-cooling strategy is studied by observing temperature distribution of the battery pack. It is found that the square arrangement is the structure with the best air-cooling effect, and the cooling effect is best when the cold air inlet is at the top of the battery pack. We hope that this work can provide theoretical guidance for thermal management of lithium-ion battery packs.

Resumen
AbstractBackground:The mainstay of management of epistaxis refractory to first aid and cautery is intranasal packing. This review aimed to identify evidence surrounding nasal pack use.Method:A systematic review of the literature was performed using standardised methodology.Results:Twenty-seven eligible articles were identified relating to non-dissolvable packs and nine to dissolvable packs. Nasal packing appears to be more effective when applied by trained professionals. For non-dissolvable packs, the re-bleed rates for Rapid Rhino and Merocel were similar, but were higher with bismuth iodoform paraffin paste packing. Rapid Rhino packs were the most tolerated non-dissolvable packs. Evidence indicates that 96 per cent of re-bleeding occurs within the first 4 hours after nasal pack removal. Limited evidence suggests that dissolvable packs are effective and well tolerated by patients. There was a lack of evidence relating to: the duration of pack use, the economic effects of pack choice and the appropriate care setting for non-dissolvable packs. Conclusion:Rapid Rhino packs are the best tolerated, with efficacy equivalent to nasal tampons. FloSeal is easy to use, causes less discomfort and may be superior to Merocel in anterior epistaxis cases. There is no strong evidence to support prophylactic antibiotic use.

Resumen
The battery management system (BMS) is a core component to ensure the efficient and safe operation of electric vehicles, and the practical evaluation of key BMS functions is thus of great importance. However, the testing of a BMS with actual battery packs suffers from a poor testing repeatability and a long status transition time due to the uncontrollable degradation of battery systems and testing environment variations. In this paper, to overcome this challenge, we propose an efficient BMS testing framework that uses virtual battery packs rather than actual ones, thus enabling a rapid and accurate evaluation of a BMSs key functions. A series-connected virtual battery pack model through leveraging Copula’s method is formulated to capture the dynamics and inconsistency of individual batteries in the pack. The developed lithium iron phosphate model features low computational efforts and is experimentally validated with different dynamical profiles, implying a high-precision virtual battery pack that is capable of reproducing the actual one. Furthermore, this framework includes a closed-loop testing platform, which can provide the state-of-charge/state-of-power references and thus automatically test and evaluate the states of the battery packs estimated from the BMS. Particularly, we consider the initial polarization that often exists in the batteries during the operation to accurately calibrate the available state-of-power benchmark of battery packs in the real world. The performed BMS testing results using the proposed framework illustrate that the tested BMS cannot adapt to the varied operation conditions, thus leading to high state estimation errors, which may result in the over-charge/discharge or over-temperature of the batteries. Therefore, this work highlights the value of effective BMS testing, providing the promising potential to achieve reliability and durability for battery systems.

Keeping appropriate temperature of battery pack is crucial for EV/HEV’s safe operation and optimal performance. Existing literatures mainly concerned theoretical analysis on comparison of different cooling/heating methods and distribution of temperature field in a battery pack. This paper reviewes recent research about design, test and optimization of thermal management system, and presents a prediction of development. Further research should focus on coefficient-of-performance (COP) analysis, closed-cycle control of heating/cooling power, optimizing the theoretical designs and testing more battery packs.

Resumen
Based on the structure of the thermal management system for electric vehicles, complete the design of the thermal management system for the whole vehicle, and realize the coupling temperature regulation between the vehicle cabin and the power battery pack. A direct cooling system model containing electric compressors, electronic expansion valves, heat exchangers, power battery packs, and other components coupled to the air conditioning system is established. Based on this, a vehicle thermal management model of the entire vehicle including electric vehicle, electric motor, high and low voltage network, vehicle cabin, air conditioning system, and power battery pack is completed. Develop the logic threshold control strategy, compressor speed control strategy, and electronic expansion valve opening control strategy for the vehicle thermal management system. Through the comparative analysis of the temperature control effect of the thermal management system on the cabin and the power battery pack under different ambient temperatures, the effect of different temperatures on the vehicle range is analyzed. The results show that this vehicle thermal management system can meet the requirements for battery pack heat dissipation and vehicle cabin refrigeration.

Resumen
Despite the popularity of Rapid Rhino packs, there are no clear guidelines regarding the volume of air to be inflated when used in the management of epistaxis. The manufacturers suggest that subjective assessment by pilot cuff palpation is used to guide inflation. However, studies have clearly demonstrated that clinicians are poor at judging balloon pressure by pilot cuff palpation when used in other settings. Our objective was to investigate the relationship between the volume of air inflated and the resultant intra-nasal pressure generated by nasal balloon packing. Twelve healthy subjects were packed with 5.5 cm Rapid Rhino packs, which were connected to a manometer and 20 ml syringe via a 3-way tap in a closed circuit. Increments of 2.5 mls of air were inflated and the resultant intra-nasal pack pressure was measured. There appeared to be a linear relationship between increasing volume and pack pressure. However, between individuals, there was a large variation in the intra-nasal pack pressure produced for a given fixed volume of air inflated. This is presumably due to variations in nasal anatomy. It may be that a manometer-measured, pressure guided nasal pack inflation technique would represent best practice, especially for less experienced staff.

Resumen
In this paper, an innovative modeling approach for Li-ion battery packs is proposed by considering intrinsic cell unbalances and packaging elements. The proposed modeling method shows that the accurate battery pack model can be achieved if the overall influences of intrinsic cell unbalances and packaging elements are taken account. Concurrently, the proposed method takes a practical model structure, resulting in the reduction of computational burden in a battery management system. Furthermore, because the proposed method utilizes cell information without a manufactured battery pack, it can be helpful to design optimal battery packs. The proposed method is verified through simulation and experimental results of the Li-ion battery pack along with the battery cycler. In three test profiles, the mean absolute percentage errors and root mean square errors of the proposed pack model do not exceed 0.5% and 0.07 V, respectively.

Resumen
To improve the reliability and energy efficiency of battery swapping, we constructed a battery power network system with active redundancies and with multiple battery management controllers (one in each newly developed smart redundant battery pack). Each pack is getting ready to assume the role of the major to coordinate direct safe mounting of the packs onto the power bus for load sharing or charging without the need for a direct current to direct current converter. This fault-tolerant architecture provides multiple backups in both management control and power supply. To verify this design, the mounting, insertion, and removal of the battery packs were executed during charging and discharging. Battery packs can be swapped on and off safely at any time regardless of their charging states. Battery packs can be direct safe mounted onto the power bus by a threshold algorithm. With each mount on event, the equivalent output energy conversion efficiency ranges from 98.3% to 99.2% throughout the transient. Moreover, when the major battery pack fails or gets removed, other battery packs can indeed assume the role of major safely. The reliability, energy efficiency, and safety of our system were verified.

Resumen
Highly cooperative social species are expected to engage in frequent reconciliation following conflicts in order to maintain pack cohesiveness and preserve future cooperation. By contrast, in social species with low reliance on cooperation, reconciliation is expected to be less frequent. Here, we investigate the pattern of reconciliation in four captive wolf packs and four captive dog packs. We provide evidence for reconciliation in captive wolves, which are highly dependent on cooperation between pack members, while domestic dogs, which rely on conspecific cooperation less than wolves, avoided interacting with their partners after conflicts. Occurrence, intensity, latency, duration and initiation of wolf reconciliations appeared to vary as a consequence of a compromise between the costs (e.g. risk of further aggression) and the benefits (e.g. restoring relationship with opponents) of such interactions. Our results are in line with previous findings on various wolf packs living under different social and ecological conditions, suggesting that reconciliation is an important strategy for maintaining functional relationships and pack cohesiveness. However, current results on dogs are in contrast to the only other study showing that reconciliation can occur also in this species. Therefore, the occurrence of reconciliation in dogs may be influenced by social and environmental conditions more than in wolves. Which factors promote and modulate reconciliation in dogs needs to be further investigated.

Resumen
Lithium-ion batteries are the source of energy for many battery-powered devices due to their high energy density and specific energy. These batteries generate a significant amount of heat during charging and discharging. Therefore, managing the thermal behavior becomes more critical to avoid the overheating of these batteries.  The purpose of this paper to investigate the thermal behavior of the Cramer 82V battery pack from Globe Group during high current discharge and provide a simulation model that can be the foundation for the next generation of batteries.  The approach of this project was to research, test, and simulate the battery pack to understand and model the thermal behavior. For more extensive sampling, 7 Cramer 82V6Ah batteries were tested to investigate and analyze the thermal behavior of the batteries during the discharge. In addition, several thermal simulations in SolidWorks were conducted on the battery pack model and compared to the experimental results.   The results from the simulation and experiment are compared at specific positions to ensure the simulation results are valid and can be used for the development of the next generation of the battery pack.

Resumen
Compost bedded pack (CBP) barn design and pack maintenance procedures vary considerably, making advising and problem-solving challenging. One objective of this research was to characterize herd performance and management practices employed by Kentucky CBP managers (42 farms and 47 CBP facilities). Producer satisfaction, changes in historical bulk-tank somatic cell count, and improvement in herd performance parameters after transitioning to a CBP barn support reported CBP barn system benefits. Daily milk production increased from before moving into the CBP barn to the second year after (29.3 ± 0.3 vs. 30.7 ± 0.3 kg, respectively; P < 0.05) for farms using the CBP barn as the primary housing facility (n = 8). Increasing stirring frequency, stirring depth, and ambient temperatures increased pack temperature. Increased drying rate decreased CBP moisture. Increased 20.3 cm depth CBP temperature and ambient temperatures improved cow hygiene. Mastitis-causing bacteria thrive in conditions similar to optimal composting bacteria conditions, making reduction of these bacteria difficult in an active composting environment. Producers must pay attention to other management areas where preventive measures can be employed. The New Dairy Housing Investment Analysis Dashboard provides users an interactive and flexible decision tool to make more informed facility investment decisions.

Hybrid vehicles are designed to operate efficiently using data from within the bounds of that single vehicle. With limited access to outside information, hybrid control systems can react to external stimuli but cannot prepare ahead of time, which limits the overall efficiency. This thesis looks beyond the scope of traditional automotive systems to increase efficiency and boost performance of hybrid vehicles while decreasing cost and maximizing drivability. I cover three main subject areas which are all focused on hybrid vehicle optimization: battery pack design for low cost thermal management, energy management of blended battery packs for weight minimization, and collaborative learning for improved energy management. The outputs of this thesis include insights into the minimization of air-cooling costs in battery packs, a better understanding of the blended battery pack design space, and in-vehicle applications of collaborative learning. First, I have advanced the understanding of how cell-level properties affect the overall costs of air-cooling in battery packs and have shown how to minimize those costs. Through both simulation and analytical studies, I illustrated that cell size and geometry can be selected to balance the tradeoff between average and delta temperature constraints. At the intersection of these two constraints, a cell size can be found that results in the minimum cost of air-cooling for the parameters of that application. While the simulation results take significant time to compute, the proposed analytical method can be used to narrow down a design space in a fraction of the time through direct calculation. Second, I have shown how blended battery packs can be sized for a given application and have identified what applications will benefit most from tribridization. Using integer programming for a lower bound, a dynamic programming based method for minimum feasibility, and a peak shaving heuristic as a baseline, I carried out a large study. In this experiment, I quantified how much room for improvement there is for a variety of hybrid applications through the pack-level combination of different energy storage technologies. Based on the results, I extracted rules of thumb for understanding when blended battery packs can improve over uniform packs. Finally, I have demonstrated how collaborative learning can benefit energy management for hybrid vehicles. I illustrated how the drivability and fuel efficiency of current micro hybrids suffer from the automatic starting and stopping of the engine for relatively short idles. By defining a traffic model and comparing that to realworld datasets, I identified parameters that are most useful in predicting idle time of vehicles in traffic. Using these predictors in combination with machine learning classifiers, I quantified the potential for a Smart/Stop system that harnesses collaborative learning to improve over current automatic engine start/stop performance. The result is a system that can significantly increase drivability while maintaining or even improving upon baseline fuel economy.

Resumen
In today’s world, we have reached the point where conventional energy forms are inevitably running out. At the same time, the technology for alternative energy harnessing is improving with big steps, especially with society rethinking their high consumption of finite energy and material. This opens the opportunity und increases acceptance for projects and research to prove its actual implementation and to push the boundaries of current technology further. One particular area of application is the automotive sector showcasing raise of costs due to depleting fuel. Solar powered cars are raising interest as it could be a way to complete independence of any resource that has to be produced, mined or in any way transported to the place of consumption. Involvement with the view to enhance their research in this field has become interesting for universities. With solar powered cars, new problems emerge, amongst others the amount of harnessed sun power and the storage to have it available at the point of use. Due to the low energy available, energy storage as light and as efficient as possible is needed. A system is required that allows to be operated independently of its surrounding in a way it is controllable.Lithium-ion based batteries were seen as the most applicable way to execute this, as they give the highest energy density with lower losses than stable, commercially available energy storage mediums. It was decided to design, build and integrate a battery system with its safety circuit into a solar car. After material selection suppliers were searched and contacted. With the successful manufacturing of this system combining different processing methods, partially at university and partially in the industry, the project included a monitoring and management system and protective measures. It was implemented so that neither the limitations of the chemistry and the physical cells nor the vibration occurring while driving the car prevents its proper use. Besides this, communication and dimensions to operate within the car followed, allowing the driver and convoy to access information and control the system. This battery system proved to be practical in street use comparable with that of regular cars and posed as a safe and effective energy supply for an electrically driven car, meeting the given demands.

Hammond, Leslie. "Nutrient Availability and Dynamics of Compost Bedded Pack Dairy Barn Waste". UKnowledge, 2015. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/pss_etds/68.

Texto completo
Resumen
Increased adoption of compost bedded pack dairy barns (CBP), a relatively new housing and manure handling strategy, warrants study to facilitate proper use of CBP waste as a soil amendment. This study: 1) characterized in situ nutrient content and availability of CBP waste in terms of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P); 2) examined the decomposition of surface-applied CBP waste compared to an alternative processed solid waste amendment; 3) examined nutrient dynamics of incorporated CBP waste in high and low soil test phosphorus (STP) environments. Quick anaerobic mineralization assays revealed that bed management affects nutrient content and availability of CBP waste. A Fall surface-applied litter bag study showed that different particle sizes of CBP waste and a biosolid decomposed at similar rates. The biosolid had greater nutrient density and availability, but the decomposition was similar to CBP waste in terms of mineralization dynamics. Aerobic mineralization of CBP waste in high and low STP soils amended on a uniform P basis was compared with fresh manure. In general, CBP increased STP more and yielded more plant available P than fresh manure. These studies provide recommendations for CBP management and further study to ensure the proper land application of CBP waste.

An increasing number of retail groups is facing problems with optimizing distribution and replenishment of products to serve stores. Lead times in the fashion industry are long and dealers often have to plan their purchases several months in advance for the coming seasons. The products are packed in production before they are sent to the central warehouse. Decisions about the pack configuration are made in connection with the purchase order. By packaging multiple stock-keeping units (SKUs) together, the efficiency increase and the costs in the supply chain can be reduced, while misallocation costs may arise. The master thesis is performed at the Venue Retail Group, which is a leading group in the Nordic region within the accessories, travel equipment and shoes. The objective of the paper is to identify the optimal pack configuration in order to generate increased turnover sales within the supply chain for own production synthetic bags. In this paper the pack problem is formulated as an optimization problem. A model is designed to determine the optimal packing order quantities that satisfy every store category's forecasted demand with the goal to minimize the total costs. By mapping product flow and identifying costs related to pack configuration the paper suggest a change of Venue Retail Groups existing pack strategy to achieve the objective.

Resumen
Lameness and mastitis are the two most costly diseases in the dairy industry. Reduction of these diseases through housing and management is beneficial. Compost bedded pack (CBP) and sand freestall barns were compared in a long-term, on-farm study to assess the effect of housing on each disease. Another research objective was to evaluate the effects of ambient weather conditions on moisture and 20 cm internal temperature of CBP. Compost bedded pack moisture, C:N ratio, and internal temperature effects on cleanliness, mastitis, and bedding bacterial counts were also considered. The last research objective was to evaluate the economics of bedding material decisions in CBP and provide a user-friendly decision support tool to predict bedding costs and usefulness.

Wang, Haoting. "Experimental and Modeling Study of the Thermal Management of Li-ion Battery Packs". Diss., Virginia Tech, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/79660.

Texto completo
Resumen
This work reports the experimental and numerical study of the thermal management of Li-ion battery packs under the context of electric vehicle (EV) or hybrid EV (HEV) applications. Li-ion batteries have been extensively demonstrated as an important power source for EVs or HEVs. However, thermal management is a critical challenge for their widespread deployment, due to their highly dynamic operation and the wide range of environments under which they operate. To address these challenges, this work developed several experimental platforms to study adaptive thermal management strategies. Parallel to the experimental effort, multi-disciplinary models integrating heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and electro-thermal dynamics have been developed and validated, including detailed CFD models and lumped parameter models. The major contributions are twofold. First, this work developed actively controlled strategies and experimentally demonstrated their effectiveness on a practical sized battery pack and dynamic thermal loads. The results show that these strategies effectively reduced both the parasitic energy consumption and the temperature non-uniformity while maintaining the maximum temperature rise in the pack. Second, this work established a new two dimensional lumped parameter thermal model to overcome the limitations of existing thermal models and extend their applicable range. This new model provides accurate surface and core temperatures simulations comparable to detailed CFD models with a fraction of the computational cost.

Resumen
The analysis and optimization of thermal performance of Li-ion battery packs are topics of great interest today. Most Li-ion batteries for motive, vehicular, backup power and utility energy storage applications are fitted with a microprocessor-controlled thermal management system including an array of temperature and voltage sensors and an active cooling system. However, as the complexity of the thermal management system increases, so does its weight, volume and parasitic power consumption, all factors that adversely affect the vehicle’s performance. In this sense, an improved thermal management system based on including passive solutions such as phase change materials or heat spreading technologies could decrease the load on active components and ultimately the weight and costs of the system. This paper describes an experimental and simulation study aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of flexible graphite materials for heat spreaders in battery thermal management systems. A commercial Li-ion battery pack for power tools applications was adopted as a case study. The electro-thermal behavior of the battery pack was characterized through combined experimental investigation and 3D FEM modeling to determine the heat generation rate of the battery cells during utilization and to evaluate the thermal behavior of the battery pack. A thermal management solution based on flexible graphite heat spreading material was then designed and implemented. The paper presents a comparative study conducted in simulation to evaluate the improvements in the pack thermal behavior.

Resumen
In this paper, we introduce a lumped parameter, distributed battery pack dynamic model which allows simulation of the electrical dynamics of all the cells in an arbitrarily configured series/parallel pack typical of those used in automotive applications. The dynamic pack simulator is based on the development of an analytical solution for the dynamic response of a single cell and an analytical development of such elemental solutions into a distributed dynamic pack model which can resolve the dynamics of each cell within the pack. This formulation leads to a computationally efficient simulation tool appropriate for application on large battery packs. This simulation tool is then used to perform Monte Carlo simulations on typical automotive current profiles for packs made of cells with a statistical distribution of parameters. A mild distribution of cell mismatch leads to cell unbalance development and statistical metrics for the growth unbalance, presented and related to both current severity and cell parameter distribution. The tool is ideally suited for studies in Battery Management System (BMS) algorithm development, as well as model-based fault propagation and diagnostics.

Resumen
The assessment of ice management success is important for ensuring the safety of floating structures in sea ice environments. The context is the ISO 19906 standard for arctic offshore structures, which specifies ice load requirements. General aspects of ice management systems that influence success are described and a specific example for the Beaufort Sea is provided to illustrate a way of determining managed swath width based on drift forecasting capabilities. Regulatory objectives are also discussed.

Texto completo
Resumen
This report explains scenario planning as a climate change adaptation tool in general, then describes how it was applied to Wind Cave National Park as the second part of a pilot project to dovetail climate change scenario planning with National Park Service (NPS) Resource Stewardship Strategy development. In the orientation phase, Park and regional NPS staff, other subject-matter experts, natural and cultural resource planners, and the climate change core team who led the scenario planning project identified priority resource management topics and associated climate sensitivities. Next, the climate change core team used this information to create a set of four divergent climate futures—summaries of relevant climate data from individual climate projections—to encompass the range of ways climate could change in coming decades in the park. Participants in the scenario planning workshop then developed climate futures into robust climate-resource scenarios that considered expert-elicited resource impacts and identified potential management responses. Finally, the scenario-based resource responses identified by park staff and subject matter experts were used to integrate climate-informed adaptations into resource stewardship goals and activities for the park's Resource Stewardship Strategy. This process of engaging resource managers in climate change scenario planning ensures that their management and planning decisions are informed by assessments of critical future climate uncertainties.
