Resumen
Decentralized controller design using overlapping decompositions is considered for descriptor-type systems with distributed time-delay. The approach is based on the principle of extension. In this approach, a given large-scale system is decomposed overlappingly into a number of subsystems and expanded such that the overlapping parts appear as disjoint. A decentralized controller is then designed for the expanded system. This controller is then contracted for implementation on the original system. It is shown that if the decentralized controllers are designed to stabilize the expanded system and to achieve certain performance, then the contracted controller, which would have an overlapping decentralized structure, will stabilize the original system and will achieve corresponding performance

Resumen
Most natural <span>world data involves overlapping communities where an object may belong to one or more clusters, referred to as overlapping clustering. However, it is worth mentioning that these algorithms have a significant drawback. Since some of the algorithm uses k-means, it also inherits the characteristics of being noise sensitive due to the arithmetic mean value which noisy data can considerably influence and affects the clustering algorithm by biasing the structure of obtained clusters. This paper proposed a new overlapping clustering algorithm named OCKMEx, which uses k-median to identify overlapping clusters in the presence of outliers. This new method aims to determine the insensitivity of the OCKMEx algorithm in locating data points that overlap even with outliers. An experimental evaluation of the algorithm was conducted wherein synthetic datasets served as a data source, and the F1 measure criterion was applied to assess the OCKMEx algorithm performance. Results indicate that the OCKMEx algorithm implementing the use of k-median performed a higher accuracy rate of 100% in identifying data points that overlap even with outliers compared to the existing k-means algorithm. The algorithm exhibited a promising performance in identifying overlapping clusters and was resistant to outliers.</span>

Controller design using extension is considered for descriptor-type systems with distributed time-delay. The approach is useful in decentralized controller design using overlapping decompositions. In this approach, a given largescale system is decomposed overlappingly into a number of subsystems and expanded such that the overlapping parts appear as disjoint. Since the subsystems appear as disjoint for the expanded system, it is easier to design a descentralized controller for the expanded system. This controller is then contracted for implementation on the original system. In the present paper, it is shown how to contract such a controller to guarantee stability and desired performance for the original system

Resumen
Summary Objectives: This paper aims at introducing a novel approach for segmentation of overlapping objects and at demonstrating its applicability to medical images. Methods: This work details a novel approach enhancing the known theory of full-segmentation of an image into regions by lifting it to a semantic segmentation into objects. Our theory allows the formal description of partitioning an image into regions on the first level and allowing the occurrence of overlaps and occlusions of objects on a second, semantic level. Possible applications for the use of this ‘semantical segmentation‘ are the analysis of radiographs and micrographs. We demonstrate our approach by the example of segmentation and separation of overlapping cervical cells and cell clusters on a set of 787 image pairs of registered PAP- and DAPI-stained micrographs. The semantical cell segmentation yielding areas of cell plasmas and nuclei are compared to a manual segmentation of the same images, where 2212 cells have been labeled. A direct comparison of over and under-segmentation between the two segmentation sets yields a mean difference value of 10.15% for the nuclei and 10.80% for the plasma. Results: Using the proposed theory of semantical segmentation of images in combination with adequate models of the image contents, our approach allows identifying, separating and distinguishing several overlapping, occluding objects in medical images. Applying the proposed theory to the application of cervical cell segmentation from overlapping cell clusters and aggregates, it can be seen that it is possible to formally describe the complex image contents. Conclusions: The proposed method of semantical segmentation is a mighty tool and under the assumption of the subtractive transparency model can be used in different medical image processing applications such as radiology and microscopy. By using alternative models to solve the ambiguities attached to overlaps and occlusions, further fields of application can be addressed.

Resumen
<p>In this paper, a new data analysis tool called Overlapping Clustering Application (OCA) was presented. It was developed to identify overlapping clusters and outliers in an unsupervised manner. The main function of OCA is composed of three phases. The first phase is the detection of the abnormal values(outliers) in the datasets using median absolute deviation. The second phase is to segment data objects into cluster using k-means algorithm. Finally, the last phase is the identification of overlapping clusters, it uses maxdist (maximum distance of data objects allowed in a cluster) as a predictor of data objects that can belong to multiple clusters. Experimental results revealed that the developed OCA proved its capability in detecting overlapping clusters and outliers accordingly.</p>

Resumen
Complex networks usually consist of dense-connected cliques, which are defined as communities. A community structure is a reflection of the local characteristics existing in the network topology, this makes community detection become an important research field to reveal the internal structural characteristics of networks. In this article, an information-based community detection approach MINC-NRL is proposed, which can be applied to both overlapping and non-overlapping community detection. MINC-NRL introduces network representation learning (NRL) to represent the target network as vectors, then generates a community evolution process based on these vectors to reduce the search space, and finally, finds the best community partition in this process using mutual information between network and communities (MINC). Experiments on real-world and synthetic data sets verifies the effectiveness of the approach in community detection, both on non-overlapping and overlapping tasks.

Resumen
Although most research in density-based clustering algorithms focused on finding distinct clusters, many real-world applications (such as gene functions in a gene regulatory network) have inherently overlapping clusters. Even with overlapping features, density-based clustering methods do not define a probabilistic model of data. Therefore, it is hard to determine how “good” clustering, predicting, and clustering new data into existing clusters are. Therefore, a probability model for overlap density-based clustering is a critical need for large data analysis. In this paper, a new Bayesian density-based method (Bayesian-OverDBC) for modeling the overlapping clusters is presented. Bayesian-OverDBC can predict the formation of a new cluster. It can also predict the overlapping of cluster with existing clusters. Bayesian-OverDBC has been compared with other algorithms (nonoverlapping and overlapping models). The results show that Bayesian-OverDBC can be significantly better than other methods in analyzing microarray data.

Resumen
How can we uncover overlapping communities from complex networks to understand the inherent structures and functions? Chen et al. firstly proposed a community game (Game) to study this problem, and the overlapping communities have been discovered when the game is convergent. It is based on the assumption that each vertex of the underlying network is a rational game player to maximize its utility. In this paper, we investigate how similar vertices affect the formation of community game. The Adamic–Adar Index (AA Index) has been employed to define the new utility function. This novel method has been evaluated on both synthetic and real-world networks. Experimental study shows that it has significant improvement of accuracy (from 4.8% to 37.6%) compared with the Game on 10 real networks. It is more efficient on Facebook networks (FN) and Amazon co-purchasing networks than on other networks. This result implicates that “friend circles of friends” of Facebook are valuable to understand the overlapping community division.

Resumen
Overlapping signals separation is a difficult problem, where time windowing is unable to separate signals overlapping in time and frequency domain filtering is unable to separate signals with overlapping spectra. In this work, a simulation under MATLAB is implemented to illustrate the concept of overlapping signals. We propose an approach for resolving overlapping signals based on Fourier transform and inverse Fourier transform. The proposed approach is tested under MATLAB, and the simulation results validate the effectiveness and the accuracy of the proposed approach. The approach is developed using Gerchberg superresolution technique to cope with signals with low signal-to-noise ratio. For practical work, an echo shape determination is required to apply the proposed technique. The experimental results show accurate localization of multiple targets.

Resumen
A new method recognizing and locating partially occluded two-dimensional parts is presented. The objects are described by a set of segments derived form the polygonal coding of their contours, and by the geometrical relationships between the segments. Rewriting rules are used to improve the stability of the polygonal coding. The identification process utilizes a robust hypothesis generator, from which the segment research assisted by the spatial relationship is propagated into the scene. The originality of this method relies mainly on the use of structural relationships between the segments to select the robust initialization hypotheses, and the use of structural research to achieve hypothesis propagation. These last two points with the use of a hash-coding technique to improve the location of predicted segments, greatly reduce the combinatories and make the algorithm particularly rapid and effective. This approach is integrated within a vision system of a Flexible Assembly Workcell to accomplish the automatic assembly of partially overlapping parts.

Resumen
An efficient, robust and fully automatic grid assembly method on multi-block cell-centered structured grids for massively parallel computation is proposed in this paper. Compared with the traditional serial algorithm, the new approach eliminates the complex irregular boundaries created during the grid partition and avoids the large load imbalance caused by the large variation of grid-block overlapping. The main task of the overlapping grid assembly is to categorize all grid points into field points, fringe points and hole points. As to the main processes of the overlapping grid assembly, for hole cutting, an improved hole map method is applied to accurately identify the hole points located on the wall boundary with less memory cost. For donor search which is the most complex process on account of the irregular distribution of the partitioned multi-block structured grids in a parallel computation environment, the Alternating Digital Tree (ADT) is utilized to find out the potential donor cells quickly for query points. Besides, to achieve better overlapping quality, the wall distance criterion is implemented for overlapping optimization. In addition, two load balance algorithms are designed to solve the imbalance problem of overlapping grid assembly. Two test cases are applied to test the new overlapping grid assembly algorithm and the results show that the new overlapping grid assembly algorithm can deal with large-scale simulation of vehicles. The comparison of total time and speed-up among three algorithms manifests that the initial load balance algorithm using query point number as load criterion is not reliable while the improved load balance algorithm achieves good speed-up and least runtime. Meanwhile, the maximum proportion the improved load balance algorithm takes in one physical unsteady step in wing-pylon-store separation test case is less than 6.1%.

Resumen
This paper introduces a multiscale modeling approach for carbon nanotubes (CNTs), in which a fine continuum model that has been developed by the present authors is employed to implement the continuum modleing. The entire domain is decomposed into a continuum modeling region and an atomic region with an overlapping region. For the atomic region, the atomic finite element method (AFEM) is used to trace the individual atomic motion. Whereas, the continuum region is viewed as the higher-order continuum media, and the mesh-free method is adopted to implement the continuum numerical discrization. For the overlapping region, the bridging domain method is used to efficiently couple two scales. Numerical computation is carried out and several examples are discussed.

Resumen
Class imbalance and overlapping on multi-class can reduce the performance and accuracy of the classification. Noise must also be considered because it can reduce the performance of classification. With a resampling algorithm and feature selection, this paper proposes a method for improving the performance of hybrid approach redefinition-multi class (HAR-MI). Resampling algorithm can overcome the problem of noise but cannot handle overlapping well. Feature selection is good at dealing with overlapping but can experience a decrease in quality if there is a noise. The HAR-MI approach is a way to deal with multi-class imbalance issues, but it has some drawbacks when dealing with overlapping. The contribution of this paper is to suggest a new approach for dealing with class imbalance, overlapping, and noise in multi-class. This is accomplished by employing minimizing overlapping selection (MOSS) as an ensemble learning algorithm and a preprocessing technique in HAR-MI, as well as employing multi-class combination cleaning and resampling (MC-CCR) as a resampling algorithm at the processing stage. When subjected to overlapping and classifier performance, it is discovered that the proposed method produces good results, as evidenced by higher augmented r-value, class average accuracy, class balance accuracy, multi class g-mean, and confusion entropy.

Resumen
Purpose For oil film thickness measurement using ultrasonic spring model, obtaining the isolated reflection from the oil film layer is the key point. While for oil film thickness measurement in thrust bearings with thin liner, the reflection from the substrate-Babbitt interface will overlap with the reflection from the oil film layer. This overlapping will render the ultrasonic spring model invalid. To obtain the isolated reflected signal from the oil film layer accurately, an adaptive method was developed to recover the overlapping echoes. Design/methodology/approach A genetic-algorithm-based support matching pursuit (GA-based SMP) was developed to provide the optimal echo number and initial parameters guesses automatically and efficiently. Then, the traditional expectation maximization (EM) model was used to fine tune the accurate results. Findings The developed method was tested using both simulated echoes and the overlapping echoes encountered in the ultrasonic oil film thickness measurement of thrust bearings. The results demonstrated that the developed method performed well on recovering overlapping echoes adaptively. Originality/value The work shows an adaptive method to recover the ultrasonic overlapping echoes. When used in ultrasonic oil film thickness measurement, it can help extend the application of traditional ultrasonic spring model to objects with four or more layers.

Resumen
<span>In the classification process that contains class imbalance problems. In addition to the uneven distribution of instances which causes poor performance, overlapping problems also cause performance degradation. This paper proposes a method that combining feature selection and hybrid approach redefinition (HAR) method in handling class imbalance and overlapping for multi-class imbalanced. HAR was a hybrid ensembles method in handling class imbalance problem. The main contribution of this work is to produce a new method that can overcome the problem of class imbalance and overlapping in the multi-class imbalance problem. This method must be able to give better results in terms of classifier performance and overlap degrees in multi-class problems. This is achieved by improving an ensemble learning algorithm and a preprocessing technique in HAR <span>using minimizing overlapping selection under SMOTE (MOSS). MOSS was known as a very popular feature selection method in handling overlapping. To validate the accuracy of the proposed method, this research use augmented R-Value, Mean AUC, Mean F-Measure, Mean G-Mean, and Mean Precision. The performance of the model is evaluated against the hybrid method (MBP+CGE) as a popular method in handling class imbalance and overlapping for multi-class imbalanced. It is found that the proposed method is superior when subjected to classifier performance as indicate with better Mean AUC, F-Measure, G-Mean, and precision.</span></span>

Resumen
A neurocomputational model based on emergent massively overlapping neural cell assemblies (CAs) for resolving prepositional phrase (PP) attachment ambiguity is described. PP attachment ambiguity is a well-studied task in natural language processing and is a case where semantics is used to determine the syntactic structure. A large network of biologically plausible fatiguing leaky integrate-and-fire neurons is trained with semantic hierarchies (obtained from WordNet) on sentences with PP attachment ambiguity extracted from the Penn Treebank corpus. During training, overlapping CAs representing semantic similarities between the component words of the ambiguous sentences emerge and then act as categorizers for novel input. The resulting average resolution accuracy of 84.56% is on par with known machine learning algorithms.

Resumen
Understanding the underlying community structure is an important challenge in social network analysis. Most state-of-the-art algorithms only consider structural properties to detect disjoint subcommunities and do not include the fact that people can belong to more than one community and also ignore the information contained in posts that users have made. To tackle this problem, we developed a novel methodology to detect overlapping subcommunities in online social networks and a method to analyze the content patterns for each subcommunities using topic models. This paper presents our main contribution, a hybrid algorithm which combines two different overlapping sub-community detection approaches: the first one considers the graph structure of the network (topology-based subcommunities detection approach) and the second one takes the textual information of the network nodes into consideration (topic-based subcommunities detection approach). Additionally we provide a method to analyze and compare the content generated. Tests on real-world virtual communities show that our algorithm outperforms other methods.
