To study Type A behaviour as a moderator of relationships between role demands and psychological and behavioural strain, 234 volunteer subjects from a medium-sized life insurance society completed three questionnaires under standardized testing conditions, tapping Type A behaviour (Session 1) and various role dimensions (Session 2) and indices of strain (Session 3). Absenteeism data were taken from employee record cards, as were data for some demographic and organizational variables (race and sex), while others, (company tenure, age and organizational level) were explored in the questionnaires. Assessment sessions were staggered, with one-month intervals between each, to reduce the effects of response sets. Factor analysis of responses to the role dimensions questionnaire confirmed the hypothesized factor structure and led to the development of scales for role conflict, ambiguity, overload and qualitative underload. The reliability and validity of these scales are discussed. Partial correlations (with the linear effects of the demographic and organizational variables removed) and multiple linear regressions indicate that role conflict, ambiguity, overload and underload may be described as social-psychological stressors, in terms of psychological strain, while only underload is weakly related to absenteeism. Type A behaviour is not found to moderate relationships between stressors and strain, with the exception of an effect for underload which may be accounted for in statistical, rather than psychological, terms. Results are interpreted as evidence of the need for improved work design and redesign, particularly in South African organizations. Implications of findings with respect to sequential models of strain, as well as the nature of the relationship between Type A behaviour and CHD, are discussed.

Absenteeism in the nursing profession poses a serious threat to South African health care institutions (Samdi, 2000; McHugh, 2001). This research investigated the association between role stress, and the impact thereof on nurse absence frequency, voluntary and involuntary absence. Data was collected from 230 nurses (N = 230) in the Western Cape using a structured self-report survey. Statistical analysis of the results revealed that constant change and resource scarcity were weak yet significant predictors of nurse absence frequency. The remaining role stress constructs had no influence on the outcome variables. A major finding of the research was that the association between the role stress constructs and absenteeism amongst public sector nurses was weak. Two possible reasons for these findings were explored, the first being a measurement error associated with self-report data in absenteeism research. The second involved questions raised about the theoretical model on which the research question was based. Implications for theory and practice were discussed and recommendations for future research, provided

Donald, Craig Hugh Maxfield. "The experience of managers responsible for retrenchment : the development of a dynamic process model and analysis of role stress". Doctoral thesis, University of Cape Town, 1995. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/13854.

Resumen
Bibliography: leaves 317-338.
Retrenchment is a widespread and frequently used strategy adopted by management to deal with the economic demands faced by organisations. The lack of a theoretical framework, however, has limited the understanding of the phenomenon. The impact of retrenchment on managers and their role in implementation has been particularly neglected, despite the fact that they are central to this process. The present study addressed the development of a dynamic retrenchment process model which could address these limitations. Development of the model was based on qualitative analysis of interview data from a sample of 50 managers involved in retrenchment announcements, in combination with other concepts and findings relating to the phenomenon, and elements of role theory. The model reflected a five phase retrenchment process-moving through decision making, design and planning, the announcement, a post-announcement phase, and concluding with an aftermath phase. The nature of the model components and the relationship between them was then examined in more depth using both qualitative and quantitative techniques. To facilitate the analysis of role dynamics, a multi-dimensional role conflict measure was developed and applied. Qualitative analysis showed indications of all types of role conflict and of role ambiguity during the retrenchment, but these manifested themselves differently during the various phases of retrenchment. Quantitative analysis demonstrated moderate relationships between person-role conflict and role ambiguity, and organisational commitment. Person-role conflict, interrole conflict and role ambiguity were also all related to a measure of mental health. Role ambiguity was the only variable displaying a significant relationship with job involvement. Qualitative analysis suggested moderating effects of personality, coping, and social support during the retrenchment process. Qualitative analysis also displayed support for the existence of adverse physiological, psychological, affective and performance outcomes resulting from involvement in the retrenchment process. The present study emphasises the importance of viewing organisational phenomena in the context of a process which changes over time. Each phase of retrenchment generates its own dynamics and demands and needs to be understood within that context. While general measures at the end of such a process give an indication of what has happened, they lack the ability to diagnose and explain perceptions and behaviour that drive the phenomenon. Also, the present study demonstrates the usefulness of specific types of role conflict in analysing the reactions of managers. Further, the study highlights the role of the psychological contract in regulating relationships and behaviour within the organisation. Both the strength of the relationship between manager and employee, as well as that between manager and organisation are demonstrated in the research. Given that retrenchment is likely to continue, the need for organisations to address specific issues within the retrenchment process is emphasised, and steps that can be taken to enhance the prospects of retrenchment assisting in organisational renewal are discussed.

Resumen
This study demonstrates the complex place stress has in the workplace by investigating both positive (eustress) and negative (distress) stress responses. An international sample of 140 individuals was recruited from various industries and organisational levels and these individuals participated in a confidential online survey. A moderated mediation model was proposed in which organisational stressors (person-job fit and role overload) influenced employee affective wellbeing directly and indirectly through stress responses, moderated by individual factors (work-family conflict and self-efficacy). Person-job fit influenced eustress which had positive effects on employee affective wellbeing. Role overload influenced distress which negatively impacted affective wellbeing. Self-efficacy moderated these relationships, with high levels increasing stress responses both negative and positive. Work-family conflict moderated relationships by reducing the positive effect of eustress and increasing the negative effect of distress. The findings not only advance current knowledge but have implications for organisational stress management practices.

Resumen
Research suggests that working with trauma survivors can result in a range of negative effects including ‘vicarious trauma’, ‘secondary trauma’, ‘compassion fatigue’ and ‘burnout’ amongst other things. Although the impact of being exposed to traumatic stories has been investigated in a range of professionals no studies to date have explored the impact of this on UK mental health workers known as care coordinators. The aim of this study was to explore a sample of care coordinators responses to client’s traumatic stories and the role of coping and perceived organisational support. Twelve UK care coordinators (community psychiatric nurses, occupational therapists and social workers) from two NHS mental health recovery teams completed interviews about their experiences of hearing clients’ traumatic experiences. Grounded theory was employed to analyse the interviews. The care coordinators heard traumatic stories in their role and were ‘active participants’ in these disclosures. They also experienced short and long-term levels of distress which included a range of negative emotions, a mixture of positive and negative responses and a broadening of their perspectives on themselves, their clients and the world. Care coordinators also developed a range of individual coping strategies, experienced individual and organisational barriers to seeking support and experienced limited organisational support for hearing traumatic stories. This is the first UK study to investigate care coordinators’ responses to clients’ traumatic experiences. Therefore further exploratory studies are required in addition to studies with larger sample sizes and measures of trauma related symptoms.

Resumen
A lot has been said about change. For example, it is widely recognised that the only constant is change (Heraclitus, 470 BC). As such, no sensible decision can be made any longer without taking into account not only the world as it is, but the world as it will be (Isaac Asimov). As regards this, a bulk of existing researches have been aimed at understanding the triggers for change and the extent or degree to which individuals, organisations, systems or entities have to change. Generally, results from such studies vary. With specific relations to organisations, organisations are advised of the need to develop added adaptive and dynamic capabilities. One of such added adaptive and dynamic capabilities is organisational resilience. In the literature, organisational resilience has been successful linked with organisations ability to maintain long term performance. Hence, the research is not about re-examining the relationship between organisational resilience and organisations ability to maintain long term performance. This research focuses on exploring the critical success factors required to maintain long term performance and building adequate resilience into systems undergoing changes. The investigation was conducted in three phases, namely: (a) the exploratory phase; (b) the descriptive phase; and the empirical phase. The exploratory phase involved identifying the critical factors essential to maintain long term performance and at the same time build resilience into their systems after undergoing organisation-wide changes. In order to make out these critical, a pilot study was conducted. 21 persons occupying senior managerial positions in different organisations were interviewed. The interview data were transcribed, coded and analysed using coding and thematic analysis to identify five common themes, namely (a) employees readiness to support ongoing organisation-wide changes; (b) development of targeted organisational adaptive capacity; (c) the provision of individualised and social support; (d) the use of stress coping mechanisms; and (e) the existence of organisational resilience strategies. The second phase of the research entailed conducting case study research with the intention of describing the identified critical success factors. The final phase entailed conducting empirical analyses and cross case analysis. Results from the cross case study analyses indicated that both resilience building at the individual level and organisational level is needed for organisations to build in resilience into their systems especially after undergoing organisation-wide changes. Three factors (i.e. employees readiness to support ongoing organisation-wide changes, the provision of individualised and social support and the use of stress coping mechanisms) were found to be more pronounced at the individual level. The remaining two factors namely development of targeted organisational adaptive capacity and the existence of organisational resilience strategies are essentially carried out at the organisational level. The research has contributed to the current body of knowledge on how organisations can strive to maintain long term performance, especially for a country like Nigeria where there still remains a dearth of such related studies. Each of the research hypotheses were either confirmed or non confirmed. This will give the practitioners, academicians and managers of Nigerian organisations the opportunity to understand how each of the sub factors of the five critical success factors can influence on attempts to build organisational resilience. In addition, specific actions that managers can follow over the life of an organisation-wide change project that will improve the resilience of systems undergoing change. In addition, differences in how varied control factors can influence resilience building in organisations were explored and validated based on the results of the Mann Whitney test results. At the end of the thesis, recommendations for future practice and research were made. One of such is that resilience building at both levels be done concurrently and given equal prominence.

The purpose of the study is to describe and problematize middle managers roles within politically controlled organizations. Based on the concepts of politically controlled organizations, according to demands, resources, support and job related stress, we arranged interviews to receive answers on the following questions: How does the interviewed middle manager experience their role within the politically controlled organizations, according to the demands they have on them and the resources they have at theirs disposal? How does the participator view their psychosocial work environment, according to the demands and resources? Can they find support within the organization? How does the person being interviewed consider the impact of their profession? We interviewed eight middle managers to answer our questions above. Previous research about middle managers describe the role as based on high workload with limited latitude. The interest of researching the subject concerning middle managers came through this description of the role. The theoretical models that are in use to settle the study is the JD-R model and two theoretical concepts; political control and system theoretical handling of work- related stress. The result of this study present that the role of middle managers is complex, and is certainly not always easy to act upon. The structure within the organization leads to time restrictions, and the path to decision making is far. It even shows that the contested middle managers experience insufficient support from the management. Therefore, what we can see as well, is that the middle managers believe that the demands are fair, through the presumption that they are described clearly.

Nyckelord: Personalomsättning, person-job fit, person-organization fit, role overload.
Aim: The aim of this study is to highlight the manager’s role related to turnover within a selling organization, by dimensions of person-environment fit and role stress.   Method: A qualitative method has been used, based on the aim of this study. Data has been collected through semi structured interviews. The empirical data has been analyzed and presented using the well-grounded theory.   Result & Conclusions: This study shows the managers understanding of the importance to hire people which fit both the job and the organization. They mainly hire people based on their personality and how they fit within the group. However, their vision is different regarding the role overload and stress. Managers have a hard time to draw a line between the private life and work.   Suggestions for future research: An interesting starting-point for future research could be to compare if the managers perception of our dimensions is consistent with the perceptions of the employees.   Contribution of the thesis: This study highlights dimensions, which have a significant relation to employee turnover. Our contribution is the manager’s perspective of these dimensions, compared to prior research, which has the employee’s perspective.   Key words: Employee turnover, person-job fit, person-organization fit, role overload.

Resumen
Magister Commercii - MCom
In recent years, there has been a proliferation in research on work-family conflict which has become more prevalent in recent years due to the economic climate in which increasingly large numbers of women are entering or returning to the labour market. Finding equilibrium in work and family arenas has also become more important to South African employees. Traditional gender roles have evolved and the role of females as homemakers is no longer the norm. However, an alternative set of social standards have not yet been established as a substitute to new patterns of work and family life. As a result, it is important to focus on concerns relating to female experiences in the workplace to try and overcome the effects of work-family conflict on females.Job stress and role stress have increased dramatically in work and family life, as more women attempt to balance responsibilities at home whilst simultaneously trying to overcome challenges faced with at the office. Typically role ambiguity, role overload and role interference arises and ultimately produces two forms of conflict: time-based conflict and strain-based conflict. Self-efficacy and implementing coping strategies are means to overcome this. The objective of this study was to explore and add to existing research done on work-family conflict amongst females in the workplace. More specifically the study is to determine whether relationships exist between the variables: job stress, role stress, role overload, inter-role conflict, spousal support, coping behaviours; job, family and life satisfaction, emotional exhaustion; the nature of the relationships and the causal impacts between these variables. Two hundred questionnaires were administered and 150 were returned to women employed in a service oriented organisation in the Western Cape. The statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) was utilized to analyze and present data in this research with frequency tables and graphical illustrations to provide information on key demographic variables in this study. The results reveal that there are statistically significant relationships amongst work overload and work-family conflict (WFC). There was also a significant relationship between parental overload and WFC. Moreover, the strongest relationship emerged between WFC and family-to-work conflict (FWC). Females experiencing WFC showed a tendency to rely on problem-focused coping strategies. In addition, there was an inverse relationship between job satisfaction and WFC. There was a significant difference in WFC based on age, tenure, number of children, income and tenure. There was no significant difference in WFC on the basis of marital status. There were statistically significant differences in FWC based on some of the biographical characteristics of the respondents. There was a significant difference in FWC based on age, tenure, income and occupation.Approximately 35% of the variance in WFC can be explained by age, education, income, work overload, parental overload and spousal support. These variables account for 33.53% of the variance in WFC, and suggest that other unexplored variables could explain the variance in WFC levels experienced by respondents. Approximately 38% of the variance in role stressors can be attributed to age, education, income, work overload, parental overload and spousal support in relation to FWC. The results which emanated from the current study assist in furthering an understanding of WFC and FWC. Individual and organisational implications are discussed and recommendations are made to further enhance this study with additional research into this area being warranted.

The aim of this study was to describe and analyse social workers’ approach in working with parents with mild intellectual disability. The study intends to find out if work approach is related to position and type of organisation. The data consists of six semi structured interviews with social workers from three different organisations that in work meet parents with mild intellectual disability. These organisations were Vuxenhabiliteringen, LSS and Individ- and Familjeomsorgen. In addition, an interview with a researcher that has expert knowledge in development for parents with mild intellectual disability was done. In the analysis the experiences of social workers were linked to organizational tasks and importance of cooperation. The study purposed to analyse the result from two theoretical perspectives; street- level bureaucracy and human-service organisations. The result shows that social workers in the organisations have different approaches dependent on what organisation they work in and the role and working tasks they have in work. The study also indicated how the organisations and their tasks affected the parenthood for persons with mild intellectual disabled parents.

Dzuguda, Hulisani. "Understanding the role of appraisal in the relationship between work overload, work engagement and burnout in South African organisations". Master's thesis, Faculty of Commerce, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/31144.

Resumen
The objective of the study was to investigate how individual appraisal of high workload as a challenge or a hindrance stressor correlates with work engagement and burnout. The work environment is fraught with high workloads, resulting in stress for employees. The cost of employee stress and ill health to organisations and society is reported to be high due to lost productivity and healthcare costs. The current study used the challenge-hindrance stressor model to determine the impact of appraisal on the relationship between work overload and work engagement/burnout. The current study proposed that employees experience both work engagement and burnout concurrently depending on whether they appraise work overload as a challenge or a hindrance stressor. An explanatory quantitative design was used to survey employees from multiple organisations in South Africa, yielding 144 full-time, permanently employed respondents. Findings from the study indicated that stressors that were appraised as challenges were linked to work engagement, whereas stressors that were appraised as hindrances were linked to burnout. The study also found that employees appraise work overload as a hindrance not a challenge, resulting in a negative relationship between work overload and work engagement and a positive relationship between work overload and burnout. The implication is that when employees have high workloads, their engagement does not increase; their likelihood of burnout increases. The study determined no positive outcomes of high workloads, only the risk of highly engaged employees becoming fatigued and burnt out. Hence, it is recommended that organisations manage the workloads of their employees.

Resumen
The aim of this study has been to highlight how school social workers experience their discretion, and furthermore how they feel about working in a context mainly dedicated to teachers. The study is executed with a qualitative research method where ten interviews with school social workers, in eight schools in the area of Stockholm have been conducted. The theoretical framework used to analyze the results was discretion, street-level bureaucracy and human service organizations. The main findings of this study imply that the most important ambition of the social work that was conducted in the schools was to help the students reach their knowledge goals. The assignment is, however, not clearly defined, which has lead to school social workers defining the mission and goals themselves. They all have wide discretion and great possibilities to decide how to execute their work, but how they use the freedom that was given seems to vary among them. An additional finding was that being a school social worker is often a solitary role in the organization, and therefore most of them highlight the importance of enjoying independent work and having a co-worker to discuss their work with.

In our work, we have analyzed which variables are more or less stressful in the profession of real estate brokers. The variables we chose to examine are the factors intrinsic to job, role in organization, career development, relationships at work, organizational structure and climate, and extra-organizational sources of stress. A total of 426 brokers from 8 different real estate brokerage firms, participated in a survey. The results were then analyzed using a variety of statistical analyzes. The results from the survey represent a revision of the previous six variables to four new ones: organizational climate, responsibility, time and life events. It is concluded that the factor “Time” has four times the impact on the sense of work-related stress among realtors in comparison with the other three variables. The result of our work, contribute with information to the real estate brokerage organizations, which factors they need to work on, in order to reduce work-related stress among brokers.

The purpose of this quantitative study is to investigate the relationships between stressors, coping, burnout, somatic ill health, depression, performance, organizational commitment and turnover intentions with particular reference to different demographic segments in different types of universities of Pakistan. In this context firstly we aimed to understand the relationships between four main stressors (Work Overload, Role Ambiguity, Role Conflict and Work-life Imbalance) and Burnout (Emotional Exhaustion and Depersonalization). Moreover, we aimed to identify the relationship between burnout and its consequences i.e. Somatization, Depression, Performance, Organizational Commitment and Turnover Intentions. At the core of our model was the moderating impact of coping strategies on the relationships mentioned above. These coping mechanisms included Proactive Planning, Boss Support, Colleague Support, General Social Support, Turning To God, Positive Reinterpretation, Avoidance and Mind Deviation. The quantitative and cross sectional survey research design was used to collect data based on a sample of 450 academic staff in private, public and semi-government universities of the KPK province of Pakistan The total questionnaires considered for analysis were 274. The preliminary data analysis, EFAs and CFAs demonstrated that our data was quasi normal and our variables possessed good psychometric properties. We tested our research hypotheses through structured regression models in AMOS and multiple hierarchical regression using SPSS. The results revealed that Work-Life Imbalance, Role Ambiguity and Work Overload showed significant positive impact on burnout. Results also demonstrated that burnout had a significant positive impact on Somatization, Depression and Turnover Intentions and a significant negative impact on Organizational Commitment and Performance. The Majority of the hypotheses related to moderating impact of social support and coping mechanisms were not supported by our results. Contrary to our hypotheses, Proactive Planning, Boss Support, General Social Support and Mind Deviation proved to be non-effective coping strategies. Despite of its limitations, this thesis has made some important academic and methodological contributions along with managerial implications. Few suggestions for future research have been also made at the end

Resumen
The aim of this study was to examine the definition and meaning of a relationship-based social work, and what conditions are required for the professional to manage such. Based on seven qualitative interviews with professional social workers who work with children and adolescents, a thematic analysis was conducted based on the theoretical frameworks of Symbolic Interactionism and the organisational theories of Human Service Organisations and Street-Level Bureaucracy. The main results confirm the importance of the relationship between the client and the professional according to the respondents. Role clarity and empathy through self-awareness were seen as important qualities of the professional to maintain a good relationship with the child, for whom this might lead to a sense of security through the relationship continuity. Mentioned conditions that facilitated the possibility of relationship based client work were mostly organisational variables such as time and discretion. These were variables that varied depending on the organisation that the professionals worked within, leading to a comparative discussion between the organisational conditions of social services and schools. Another theme identified was experience which seemed to matter as a personal skill. These conditions affect the professional’s ability to create and maintain relationships with the children.

The literature on organizational socialization in management has mainly focused on newcomers’ adjustment into stable organizations. Conversely, this study attempts to understand the socialization process of insiders in a context of organizational change. Built from managerial and sociological approaches of socialization at work and complementary concepts of role theory, the conceptual framework highlights the key dimensions of the process: contrast, role tension, organizational tactics/practices, proactive tactics/behaviors, socialization states. Conducted in the national French railway company (SNCF), a qualitative longitudinal study enriches the understanding of each dimension and their articulation through social mechanisms. From this research, six typical processes are identified leading to three behaviors of absorption, exploration or role determination. From a meta-level analysis, four collective trajectories are suggested, based on the continuity/discontinuity perceived of identity in a diachronic perspective. Managerial implications are proposed to the company and organizations experiencing similar socialization issues

Resumen
Research has revealed that job-related stress impacts on psychological and psychosomatic functioning with detriments to both individual and organisational level outcomes (Beehr, Jex, Stacy & Murray, 2000; Cooper, Kirkcaldy & Brown, 1994; Johnson & Cooper, 2003). As a result stress research has typically been associated with destructive consequences for the individual and organisation, thus highlighting the need to explore variables which may alleviate workplace stressors. This study aims to explore the potential moderating effects of individual cultural orientation and perceived organisational support on the relationship between role stressors (role conflict) and job satisfaction. One hundred and fifty-two men and women, employed by South African organisations, completed the multidimensional role conflict questionnaire, the horizontal and vertical individualism and collectivism scale, the survey of perceived organisational support and the job satisfaction survey. Results revealed that horizontal individualism interacting with person role conflict and intersender conflict had inverse moderating effects on job satisfaction, while perceived organisational support interacting with intersender and intrasender conflict had positive moderating effects on job satisfaction. Findings further indicated that a collectivist cultural orientation and perceived organisational support were related to increases in job satisfaction. Practical implications of the study and directions for future research are discussed.

Resumen
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Workplace is a place where a person spend most of its time and what will happen if that workplace exerts pressure over the mind of that individual the resultant will be, they will be reluctant to go there and as a overall impact there efficiency and productivity will be reduced to a much level. If particularly we talk about police and defence personnel than by seeing their nature of work, work stress seems to be very common. As a person spends most of the time at workplace they develop interpersonal relationships with their colleagues and this gives rise to concept of peer support. For this study we are considering aspect of peer support and we are trying to establish relationship between work stress and peer support among police personnel and defence personnel. The data for the study was collected by using random sampling method by defence personnel and police personnel. We developed a questionnaire to collect data and after collecting responses we applied reliability and validity to our data. Then we Analyse our data with the help of SPSS and as a result we found that peer support was negatively correlated to work stress in both cases of defence personnel and police personnel. And we also found that stress level of defence personnel showed more variance as compared to police personnel.

Isaacs, Gavin Gabriel. "The role of effective change management and psychological capital on organisational behaviour during organisational restructuring : a cross-sectoral study". Thesis, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/24849.

Resumen
The study set out to assess the impact of organisational restructuring (OR), the independent variable on organisational behaviour (OB), the dependent variable, in private and public sector organisations as well as state-owned enterprises (SOEs) in South Africa. OB, for the purposes of this study, consists of turnover intention, resistance to change, commitment to change and job security. It further aimed to evaluate whether the various types and magnitude of OR impact on employees in the different sectors. OR was delineated into three factors, that being Restructuring (Type), Restructuring (Leadership) and Restructuring (Frequency), before being further regressed into sub-factors, that being Restructuring (Type_Count), Restructuring (Leadership_Count) and Restructuring (Frequency_Count), for the purposes of using it as categorical variables and indexing it. The study assessed whether effective change management (ECM) mediated the relationship between OR and OB, across sectors. ECM is underpinned by effective change management processes, leader-member exchange (LMX) and perceived organisational support (POS). Finally, it aimed to assess whether employees’ psychological capital (PC), comprised of self-efficacy, hope, optimism and resilience, moderated the relationship between ECM and OB. The study found that OR does, indeed, impact on the OB of employees in different sectors. It has also confirmed the mediating role of ECM and that PC moderated the relationship between ECM and OB. The study found that the unidimensional construct, effective change management, coupled with PC, another unidimensional construct, has indeed been able attenuate the impact of OR on OB. In the case of this study, it was primarily the employees of large organisations, such as SOEs, which are affected, while employees of private and public organisations were also affected. Recommendations to organisational leaders and practitioners are provided, with the aim of assisting with the successful implementation of organisational change and restructuring initiatives, while at the same time reducing the impact thereof on the organisational behaviour of employees

Jacobs, Rochelle Dorothy. "Exploring the role of spirituality in coping of traffic officers". Diss., 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/18751.

Texto completo
Resumen
The main purpose of this study is to explore the role spirituality plays in the coping of traffic officers within the South African Traffic Services. A sample of ten traffic officers participated in the study, and data was obtained by means of open-ended questions during in-depth and semi-structured interviews. The literature review aimed to conceptualise spirituality, to conceptualise coping, and to theoretically explore the role of spirituality in the coping of traffic officers. Specific aims for the empirical study were: to gain a better understanding of how traffic officers experience the role of spirituality in coping with their role within the South African context; to provide a framework that can assist with creating an understanding of the role spirituality plays in coping as a traffic officer; and to formulate recommendations for possible future research that explores the role of spirituality in the coping of traffic officers within the discipline of Industrial and Organisational Psychology, more specifically in employee and organisational wellness, and career counselling. The research findings showed that traffic officers in the sample all utilised spirituality in the workplace to various extents, and that they exhibited adaptive coping abilities when doing so. They associated less spirituality or a lack of spirituality with weaker coping abilities. It was found that spirituality in the traffic officers is informed by a foundation of spirituality or religion, purpose to their work and life, their connection to their spiritual source, and the fruits of spirituality. Their coping ability was influenced by upbringing and background, by stressors from their work environment and by coping mechanisms. The role of spirituality in the coping of traffic officers culminated in their ability to interpret the meaning of spirituality, and then to implement spirituality in order to cope.

Mulume-Oderwa, Chorivu. "Assessing the role of street traders' organisations in empowering street traders in Durban-CBD". Thesis, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10413/5104.

Texto completo
Resumen
Whether in the rich Western countries, or the Southern Hemisphere developing countries, street trading is a socio-economic phenomenon which provides employment to millions of poor and marginalised communities, allowing them to survive despite socio-economic and political constraints. Well aware that their empowerment cannot come or be initiated except by themselves, they find in organising an empowerment will-power which triggers collective action toward influencing change of institutional practices and processes which often marginalise and put them under unnecessary pressure. In this environment, street traders’ organisations’ role tends to be limited to meeting the direct causes of their current concerns as crises arise and therefore leave in the oblivion deep causes which lead to their marginalisation. Weakened by their constituencies’ economic situation, they often fall into fatalism and often become easy-targets and victims of non-inclusive municipal processes. By organising and building strong organisations they are likely to emancipate themselves from exploitative practices and processes and to claim a share in matters concerning their interests as equal stakeholders without any discrimination or exploitation but for the sake of empowering disadvantaged communities. Therefore the choice of this study was instructed by the feeling that empowered street traders’ organisations in Durban-CBD can play a major role towards the integration of street traders in the city socio-economic framework.

Timm, Victoria Margaret. "Exploring the role of the hospice volunteer: a qualitative study". Diss., 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/1451.

Texto completo
Resumen
The hospice volunteer is viewed as an integral member of a multidisciplinary team, with various roles directed at enhancing the quality of life of patients and their families. The purpose of this study is to provide an integrated picture of the hospice volunteer, their role, the human dimensions of this role and the impact this has on their lives as not much has been written in literature about this specific sub-group of hospice workers. The context of the study is a hospice in Gauteng where the researcher works as a volunteer. The ethnographic case study has been chosen as an appropriate research design as it explores the above phenomenon from the volunteers' point of view. The subjects are three volunteers who have been active at the hospice for at least twelve months. Evidence in terms of specific interviews and observations are used to draw conclusions. The interviews are based on a minimal number of open-ended questions. The primary method of analysis is the examination of transcripts from these in-depth interviews. A thematic analysis is carried out in which a detailed description of the emerging themes are given. Four major themes are identified and explored: Description of the role; The experience of being a volunteer; A way of coping; and The influence of the hospice culture. Sub-themes that emerge within each case study vary due to the individual nature of the experience of the role. Themes are explored in light of current theory and findings. This was to note the similarities and differences of this specific sub-group of volunteers compared to others found in the literature reviewed for this study. As there is a scarcity of literature pertaining specifically to hospice volunteers, the study depends mostly on writings pertaining to hospice staff and volunteers in general. A summary and integration of the core findings of the three case studies is given and their similarities and differences are explored. How some of the different themes interlink is also discussed. Although various sub-themes found in the individual case studies are significant to the individual cases, some of them can be incorporated into common themes when looking at the volunteers as a group. The strengths and limitations of the study are discussed as well as recommendations for the hospice organisation and further research.
